Book Description
A week's holiday in a luxurious Yorkshire time-share is just what Scotland Yard's Superintendent Duncan Kincaid needs. But the discovery of a body floating in the whirlpool bath ends Kincaid's vacation before it's begun. One of his new acquaintances at Followdale House is dead; another is a killer. Despite a distinct lack of cooperation from the local constabulary, Kincaid's keen sense of duty won't allow him to ignore the heinous crime, impelling him to send for his enthusiastic young assistant, Sergeant Gemma James. But the stakes are raised dramatically when a second murder occurs, and Kincaid and James find themselves in a determined hunt for a fiendish felon who enjoys homicide a bit too much.

A British delight.......2007-10-03
A SHARE IN DEATH (Police Proc-Kincaid & James-England-Cont) - VG
Crombie, Deborah - 1st in series
Avon Books, 1993, US Paperback - ISBN: 9780061150401
First Sentence: Duncan Kincaid's holiday began well.
Newly promoted DI Duncan Kincaid has accepted use of his cousin's timeshare. He didn't expect it to be a working holiday. However, when a body is found in the pool and the local DS claims it is suicide, Kincaid knows he can't ignore it. With DS Gemma James help from headquarters, it's up to Duncan to find the killer.
I don't know how I missed this delighted traditional mystery. Happily, it is a police investigator, rather than an amateur sleuth, but the other classic elements are there; a multitude of seemingly unrelated suspects in an old manor house, now timeshare apartments and cottages, and no apparent motive. The characters are well developed and provide interesting subplots. I really liked the way the investigation was done by both protagonists and the descriptions of the environs. I've only read one other book in this series, but you can bet I'm going to read them all. Delightful!
Time-Shares are Not A Joy........2007-05-30
Need a vacation? Dream of spending a week in your own villa? Deborah Crombie serves up a tasty retreat with, "A Share in Death." Supt. Duncan Kincaid wants a rest with no worries. But reality isn't the standard of dreams. His borrowed time-share brings nothing but murder which he sought to escape.
A pass on the part of the local police has Duncan taking up the cudgel and requesting help from his Sargent, Glenna James to find a killer as obstructive as a "closed room." A second murder seems senseless, but then the police are never in-tune with the mind of a killer.
This complex offering introduces mystery fans to an English drawing room mystery through a police procedural by an American who manages to convey the British tone of drama and suspense.

An auspicious beginning.......2007-01-04
"A Share in Death," Deborah Crombie's first mystery featuring Superintendent Duncan Kincaid and his young sergeant, Gemma James, is an auspicious beginning to what has developed into a strong series of British police procedurals. In this debut novel, Kincaid goes on holiday for a week in a Yorkshire timeshare, a beautiful Georgian house with several small apartments occupied by a mixed bag of guests. What starts out as an idyllic vacation soon turns nasty, with the discovery of a body in the hot tub, and Kincaid is called upon to use his skills as a newly-promoted detective superintendent to find out the truth. When Sgt. James arrives, more complications ensue, culminating in a surprising resolution to the mystery.
Crombie's characters are interesting and nicely developed, showing promise of the skill at characterization she gained over her next several novels. The plot, while not exactly a traditional country house mystery, has elements of that tested and true formula, with plenty of red herrings and misdirected clues. While not the strongest book in the series, it is a must-read for Crombie's fans who are curious about how this Kincaid-James partnership began.
Great First Book.......2004-07-17
Most first books in a series can be rather tedious because of the time spent by the author establishing characters as well as plot. But Ms. Crombie did an excellent job keeping this interesting. I can't wait to read the next in the series. I predict Ms. Crombie will be giving Martha Grimes and Elizabeth George a run for the money!!! Excellent read!!
May Be A Promising Start........2003-07-29
This may be a promising start to a new series, but I found this book quite simplistic (written at about Grade 4 level,) and the coincidences were a bit too much! Kinkaid appears to be a lame duck since he seems to yearn romantically about both women his age that he meets during the course of solving the murder. Also, I knew that it was an American author writing an English procedural (a la Elizabeth George and Martha Grimes who do it so skilfully), but I found that the story did not sound English and the characters did not sound and act like the English do. It didn't ring true. I will attempt to read another book in the series to see if it gets better. I was looking forward to beginning this series after I had read some of the reviews, so I am disappointed.

The Day I Died.......2007-10-05
I like the format - twenty different people get to tell of their near-death experiences, although one or two of them seemed more like nightmare dream-states while they were in a coma, rather than NDE's.
I guess it's my choice to believe that true NDE's are indisputably 'positive' experiences.
I enjoyed the book and recommend it to anyone interested in near-death expierences - just skip over the bad trips.
The Day I Died, NDE's.......2007-09-07
This book was not quite what I was expecting or use to. Having a shelf full of books written by Dr. Melvin Morse, whose long term dedicated research is far more intriguing and helpful to my study of this phenomenon, this book left me feeling as though I was reading too much of the same story, rather than a gathering of studies from around the world on the subject. A subject that has long since captivated me from a soulful and psychological as well as medical standpoint. However, if you are not into the scientific or soulful, long term studies of the subject of near death experience and you wish to simply read a number of personal experiences this is the book for you.
Not quite what I expected........2007-04-05
This collection of near death experiences were interesting but after reading a few of the accounts, the stories became quite tedious and boring to read. A bit more editing might be needed here. This is a book I will not keep in my library.

Compelling Stories from Compelling People.......2003-06-09
The death of a loved one is a harsh blow. Whether it comes suddenly, in an accident or natural disaster, or after a long battle with illness, the survivors are left with an emptiness that defies description. And when the loved one is a child--no matter how old--that emptiness, says author Sandy Fox, never goes away.
Ms. Fox's 27-year-old daughter Marcy was killed in an automobile accident just when life had begun to fully open before her. The driver that caused her death has never been found.
"When your child dies, you change," Ms. Fox writes in Chapter 5: "Private Thoughts on Healing." "The person you were before is gone. The life you had before is no longer possible."
"The heartache that comes when the natural order of things is changed, when your child dies before you," adds her ex-husband Jess, Marcy's father, "is unfathomable."
In I HAVE NO INTENTION OF SAYING GOOD-BYE Ms. Fox has compiled the stories of 24 other families devastated by the loss of one or more children, revealing the similarity of the pain they suffer and the many and varied ways they dealt with it. It is an enlightening study of grief and redemption, of anger and epiphany.
This is not the first book to address the issues of mourning or the death of children. What catches the reader's attention, though, is the simplicity and honest with which Ms. Fox and those she interviewed reveal their deepest and, sometimes, darkest pain. The result is an enlightening and emotional journey that leaves one both aching for these people and applauding their strength and courage.
Whether you've lost a child yourself or know someone who has, Ms. Fox offers insights into the many ways people deal--or don't--with that loss. For those fortunate enough not to have suffered this particular pain, her book will provide education in how to respond when someone else has that comes from the one source that can't be refuted. I HAVE NO INTENTION OF SAYING GOOD-BYE should be on the reference shelves of any professional who confronts the grief-stricken.
Review of I Have No Intention Of Saying Goodbye by Sandy Fo.......2001-07-30
After my four year old son died in May of 2001 I almost immediately began reading books on healing after the loss of a child. I found this book with it's insights of so many parents to be of great comfort to me. Knowing that I was not alone in this sea of uncertainty was so helpful. I would highly recommend this book.
Keeping memories alive.......2001-07-15
A very personal and touching book about those who have experienced the tragedy of letting go of a loved one, but "have no intention of saying goodbye." It is a powerful reminder that a life that has prematurely been taken away, still has many memories of joys and blessings that always need to be remembered. It is a book worth reading by those who are trying to deal with their own personal loss, as much as well-intending family and friends who want to comfort and keep this special person alive in their memories.
You Are Not Alone.......2001-06-25
Nothing in life prepares one for losing a child. But for those of us who have lost a child, there is much to learn from the shattered worlds of the parents who have come before us. I Have No Intention of Saying Good-bye, by Sandy Fox, opens a window into the post-death lives of twenty-four parents who have lost a child or multiple children. Parents whose children have died often feel very alone. If you are such a parent, this book will help you see how much you have in common with other parents, and will give you a glimpse into how you might develop a meaningful future out of today's darkness.
Book Description
This is a thinking person's guide, and as such it supplies a theoretical framework for understanding attachment and loss as well as actual advice on everyday care, costs, and regulations.
Book Description
Have you struggled with grief? Struggled to understand God's sovereignty in the face of sudden loss, much less embrace it, rest in it? In this remarkably honest book Sharon Betters tells us the full story of her teenage son's sudden death in a car accident just over ten years ago. Sharon opens up her private journal to describe and express the raw grief, anger, and hunger to understand how God can be good and loving, and still take away her sixteen-year old son. She draws us to a passage from Isaiah that carries God's promise to provide treasures for his people in the very midst of darkness and trouble. Treasures in Darkness will help you turn your heart toward God no matter what the midnight darkness in your life.

Treasures In Darkness: A Grieving Mother Shares Her Heart.......2007-07-17
I have to say right away that Treasures in Darkness wasn't exactly what I expected. I knew the book was about a mother's tragic loss of her young son and by the title I assumed that she had managed to keep his memory alive by changing the world just a little. I rather expected the account of a woman who had become active in mothers against drunk drivers or started volunteering in a cancer ward in an effort to bring reason to her family's horrific loss. These would have made great touching, inspirational tales.
Treasures in Darkness, hardly mentions the feelings of the mother over her son's passing. Instead, this book is a very passionate Christian book about how the minister's wife questions God after the death of her son. The book rather reads as an intense sermon about how she questioned God but found solace in her beliefs. Though definitely not for the general public, I recommend this book to Christians who are questioning their faith after a recent tragedy. This book will give them solace that they aren't alone while encouraging them to hold onto their faith for the answers.
the most helpful book to me that I've read on grief.......2006-12-22
A couple months after my daughter died, my pastor gave me the book, A Grieving Mother Shares Her Heart: Treasures in Darkness. I read it in a couple days, finding in its pages validation for the way I was grieving and how I felt. The process that Sharon Betters had gone through mirrored my own. It helped to know that I wasn't the only one who had experienced the overwhelming heartache that comes with the loss of a child.
Then I read the book again, highlighting parts that I wanted to come back to.
As Sharon quoted extensively from the journal she wrote in the first months after her son Mark died in a car accident, I watched her struggle with God and then accept her life's circumstance. Sharon embraces God's promise of eternal life for His children. She rests in the shadow of the Almighty's arms, finding treasures of hope in the darkest moments of grief.
The hymns and Scripture she includes in the book were the same passages I had already gone to repeatedly for comfort.
I am worn out from groaning;
all night long I flood my bed with weeping
and drench my couch with tears.
My eyes grow weak with sorrow;
they fail because of all my foes.
Away from me, all you who do evil,
for the Lord has heard my weeping.
The Lord has heard my cry for mercy.
~ Psalm 6:6-9
I think that anyone who has experienced a significant loss can benefit from Sharon's book. She allows grief and points the reader toward healing and comfort in the Lord.
The book is also for those who want to help and minister to people who are grieving. In a chapter titled Who's Bearing Whose Burden, Sharon writes,
The challenge of Paul in Galations 6:2, "Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ," teaches us that God expects us to not only need each other but also reflect the love of Christ by helping each other. Grief is not a pathway we should attempt to walk alone.
She addresses what she calls "echoes of mercy" which are the little things in life that God sends our way to encourage us. Such a God of grace we have. She shows us how to get through the ugly grief and live life.
compassionate truth.......2006-08-19
This book combines the validation of grief with the truth of Scripture. This needs to be read by anyone whose child has died whether recently or years ago.The book is an excellent resource for those who are friends of the parents and want to gain insight on the roller coaster of emotions that a parent continually goes through.
Hope in the Darkness.......2006-06-06
It is hard to put into a few words what this book is about. I am 23 years old and 10 years ago I lost my older brother. When I got done reading this book, I looked at it again and was in awe at how truly amazing it was that though she lost her son she could write in her journal and praise God like she did. I loved the book! There were many places that I related to and felt again the pain and the grief. But then there was also the hope. And that is what this book is all about. A mother's struggle but also a hope that beyond the darkness there is light and with that light you begin to find those treasures that God has laid out.
HONEST perspecitve on heartache.......2006-05-30
Using personal journal entries and exposing her personal struggle with God, the author demonstrates how people can deal with the agonizing heartaches of our lives. All through the book, the reader can relate to the questions and longings that many of us go through when faced with life-changing challenges. The honest and open writing helps ease the often lonely confusion that someone in grief experiences. Read the book and give it!
