Book Description

In the tradition of Dead Poets Society, an English professor recounts the unique challenges of teaching liberal arts at one of America's premier military schools

"If it's a choice between a gay man with a rifle between me and the enemy or nobody at all, I'd rather have the gay man."—A student's response upon learning that the World War I poet Wilfred Owen was probably gay

What really goes on behind the wall that surrounds the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis? What are all those midshipmen, future officers in the U.S. Naval and Marine Corps and leaders of our society, thinking as they stand in neat ranks at the parades beloved by tourists? What are their professors actually educating them to do?

In Annapolis Autumn, Bruce Fleming, professor of English for nearly two decades at the academy and a prizewinning author, captures the sights, sounds, colors, and conversations of this tradition-steeped institution.

In other classes, the cadets learn how to assemble guns, control armored vehicles, man battleships, and kill other human beings. Nothing is ever less than "outstanding, sir!" In English class, however, Fleming introduces his students to nuance and subtext, to the gay poets of World War I, and to the idea that not every piece of literature is designed to be "motivational." Sharing stories from his twenty years at the academy, Fleming explores questions about teaching, the labels "liberal" and "conservative," and the ultimate purpose of higher education—issues made all the more gripping at a time when many of his students will graduate from the classroom to the battlefield.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Scary double standard.......2006-04-28

Amidst many informative and entertaining pages about Annapolis, Prof. Fleming reveals two very shocking facts. One: About 50% of midshipmen do not meet the USNA minimum academic requirements, but are let in anyway, because of perceived needs in athletics and affirmative action. Two, clearly unqualified midshipmen, even those with serious psychological disablities, are allowed to graduate and assume potentially disastrous command positions because to prevent their graduation would reflect badly on the decision to admit them in the first place. Sounds like Catch 22, but it is unfortunately not fiction. There may be some broader social value in weighing factors other than character and ability in civilian schools, but in the military, I would think we would want the very best making command decisions, and not someone there for any other reason. When war is upon us, and lives are at stake, does anything else really matter?

5 out of 5 stars The gift of thinking outside the military box.......2006-02-25

In Annapolis Autumn, Professor Bruce Fleming gives the reader a rare look into Naval Academy culture with dignity, humor, and occasionally, the kind of candor that makes the brass blush. Having been not only a student, but as well, a staff member at Annapolis, I can tell you that Fleming hits the nail on the head.

Fleming points out that while the US Naval Academy at Annapolis is a fine institution with a rich heritage, there are some glaring warts that could be easily removed, yet political pressure, stereotypes, and conformity all conspire to maintain a status quo beneath the brilliantly polished veneer. Considering the environment he operates, his courage in pointing out the proverbial emperor's new clothes is laudable, yet in my mind he has, without doubt, given something far more praiseworthy: the challenge of critical thought to his midshipmen - students who are indoctrinated daily into a military gung-ho dogma.

Annapolis Autumn is not an exposé and although Fleming is not a dissident, his opinion periodically takes exception with the administration's official stance. He encourages today's military leaders to consider facets of culture and society that might have otherwise in the past been merely academic. Fleming pushes midshipmen to think outside their Academy boxes and use their highly developed minds to be better people on the whole as well as the exceptional naval officers the Academy is famed to produce.

As an alumnus, I genuinely enjoyed Annapolis Autumn. As a free-thinking veteran, I applaud Bruce Fleming's willingness to speak his mind. Well written, eloquently supported, and easily digested, Fleming's book was a both a challenge and a pleasure.

4 out of 5 stars Thought provoking.......2006-02-06

An interesting book. Despite his critics, Prof Fleming provokes some thought about the how and why of the Naval Academy, and in the process, he puts some interesting, fundamental questions out in the open. Is it enough that the Academy churns out Military officers? And if it were enough, why isn't it simply reduced to an extended Officer Training / Basic Training "curriculum"?

In an on-going period of "battle hardening," it is commendable for an "insider" to continue to challenge a notion of single-mindedness in the context of the Naval Academy curriculum. While there is a conservative / liberal pendulum that is currently (and clearly) leaning toward the conservative side, simply accepting that the curriculum (and training) "is what it is" only promotes (and exacerbates) the notion that there is a single solution for producing an Officer. A Military Commission mandates an Officer's fidelity to the Constitution and its principles. It is beneficial for the individual to understand the reasons why this is the case as well as what those principles are. Without that understanding, we could quickly diverge into the blind leading the blind (for an enlistment demands the individual's obligation to those Officers). While some of the criticisms have merit and deserve consideration, it is a good thing that Prof Fleming is able to cogently articulate his opinions and bring to light the necessity of the midshipmen's complete development - rather than adhere to a one size fits all, single solution.

While I'm still not sure I agree with all aspects of the book / Prof Fleming's thoughts (I plan to read it again), it is at least worth the discussion(s) necessary to see all sides of these arguments.

5 out of 5 stars True (Unfortunately).......2006-01-30

I graduated from the Academy in 73 and it seems as if it hasn't changed a bit. It is as accurate a picture of what goes on inside that an outsider can have. If I didn't know better I would have thought that he was a graduate himself. I recommend it highly; not only for the picture that it gives of the Academy and the Midshippeople (I DON'T CARE IF IT IS A RANK) but because it is an accurate portrayal of much that is going on in this country today.

5 out of 5 stars Now I understand!.......2006-01-14

I have a female mid at the Academy and this book has really opened my eyes and allowed me to see things from a totally different perspective. I think I understand her better now and what she is experiencing. Bruce Fleming is a tad cynical but so many of his thoughts are very thought provoking and important to read. Take the time to sit with it, don't pre-judge and just think about what is said. One can not forget that these are HIS thoughts and we need not agree with everything. Nonetheless, there are some things in the book that bear consideration but to do so, we must take off our blinders and step out of our 'comfort zone'...... I recommend you give it a try.

The body of a woman, clad only in a fur coat and jewelry, is found floating in the Arno at dawn. Marshal Guarnaccia of the Florentine carabinieri identifies her as a missing hotel guest. But how and why did she die? Was it a bizarre suicide? Or murder?

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Dry Police Procedural.......2006-04-06

I can't believe the other reviewer read the same book. There is no Florentine atmosphere whatsoever in this book and the Marshal is indistinguishable from his captain and neither has much of a sense of humor. She uses so many Britishisms that the story might as well have taken place in London. I haven't a clue how the caribinieri are organized and the author doesn't enlighten us. I keep confusing the captain with the marshal and vice versa. I usually breeze through mysteries but this one is tough slogging. I was 2/3 of the way through before I even got interested. I had hoped for a series featuring a detective the likes of Camilieri's Montalbano or Leon's Brunetti. They are smart, witty, compassionate and reflect the character and charm of their respective territories (Sicily and Venice). Very disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Another great Nabb.......2006-02-23

Nabb cannot be beat for descriptions of Florence. The city comes alive as the Marshall quietly and intelligently solves the mystery. What mystery? Read it and see!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I wish there was a sequel!! :P.......2004-09-24

i randomly picked this book off of my school library and i luv it! It's a sweet story about a girl named Carolina who has to suffer through amny things that we should be glad we have. She has lost a father and an older sister that was like a best friend to her. my absolute favorite part was the end when Carolina caught Mara and Garret. I was grinning, ear to ear, and smirking, litterally scaring the heck out of my family, mentally screaming 'YES!! YES!! IN YOUR FACE!' hahaha. it really is a great book and i thik it'll make u stronger if you'll just walk up to your closest library!

5 out of 5 stars Moving book about dealing with loss.......2003-09-05

Dealing with the loss of loved ones is hard enough, but Carolina is also having to deal with the pains of betrayl and first love. This book handles both topics with great sensitivity and realism. Carolina is a wonderful character who will capture your heart and leave you hoping for a sequel.

4 out of 5 stars Carolina Autumn.......2002-03-10

The book was about a girl named Carolina McKinney. She lives with her mom after her father and sister died in a plane crash. Her character is very emotional and thinks that her father and sister are still alive. She has a boyfriend named Poindexter who lives right next door from her. Her best friend's name is Mara who is a big backstabber...
My favorite part of this book was when Carolina and Poindexter were running and Carolina fell and got hurt then Poindexter helped her get back home. I also like the part when her mother and her were hugging in the middle of the street while it was raining. It was so sweet and I wish that my mother and I can do that too. The only thing I do not like about the book are when Mara flirts with Poindexter a lot! It is not right to do that while your so-called-best-friend is there.
I personally think that people should read the book because it is so wonderful! It touches your heart.

5 out of 5 stars Another Home Run for Carol Lynch Williams!.......2000-10-07

Carol Lynch Williams certainly understands teenagers and knows how to bring them characters they can identify with and learn from. Carolina Autumn is no exception! I read the first chapter aloud to a group of junior high girls taking a Creative Writing class from me, and they laughed in all the right places, then shared the similaries in experience with Carolina as she gets her first bra. I remembered well my own feelings of uncertainty in budding teenage romance and the fears of my best friend "taking him away." A great book to help teenagers deal with death, as well. This book's short length makes it perfect for the reluctant reader.

This is - regardless of your religious persuasion - one of the best books for helping children deal with and understand death and dying that has ever been written. It's about the death of a child's grandfather - his going through "the great change," and frames death in a way that is absolutely beautiful and meaningful. Highly recommended for everybody, particularly those with children who are trying to make sense of the death of their elders.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2007-10-08

Really loved the book. I lost someone recently and this book really helped me through a tough stretch. I would recomend it to anyone dealing with loss or trying to help someone else deal with the loss of a loved one. This book should become a classic in the death, grief and bereavment segment.

5 out of 5 stars More about life . . . .......2007-09-30

Seasons of life and accompanying transitions serve as the backdrop upon which guidance is provided. Set in midwestern American, Straub outlines his life's milestones in relation to significant death losses. From these experiences, he reflects upon lessons learned. The result is innovative ideas on preparation for one's own death, such as writing a personal eulogy and creating a "life room - a room where death is not feared or ignored (p. 130)". An appropriate application for Straub's work would be as a springboard for discussion in adult Sunday School groups, when taken a chapter or two at a time. Although the writing hints of viewing life events through the lens of Christianity, Straub's perspective posits non-traditional insights into such topics as marriage, divorce, stepfamilies, and existential questions. In actuality, Straub's book is more about lessons learned in life . . . . than it is about death.

5 out of 5 stars I read this and learned lessons of death in a good life........2007-04-24

I read this book and I really liked the whole read. It was just long enough to cover the subject but, short enough to enjoy a great story and meaningful advice.

Larry seems to catch the essence of his life's experience in his Kansas, mid-west journey. I enjoyed the personable story that drew you into the first page and then resolved the "autobiographical" experiences of the author in the last lines of the book.

His practical approach of preparing for all of the "seasons" of life was overwhelmingly simple. There is a "checklist" of how to be successful in each season while preparing you for the special "Autumn Corridors."

I recommend the read for those who like a peaceful Fall day walk in the eternal approaches to living your lives. You will enjoy it.

Book Description

When Autumn Comes will help you appreciate and respond to the important needs and delicate issues of our final passage through life. With wisdom and sensitivity, it gives practical keys for creating a holistic, comforting environment for those nearing the end of life so they can face death with peace and dignity.

The author shares her intimate relationship with death in the loss of her lover and close friends and in her many years of experience at the bedside of the dying as a hospice volunteer. Her moving journey through grief, tears and companionship shows how we can find greater compassion and understanding in caring both for the dying and for ourselves in our time of loss.

“When Autumn Comes shows us that, with compassionate care, the end of life can be a time of personal growth and healing for the dying and their loved ones.”

Dannion Brinkley, chairman and founder of Compassion in Action and author Saved by the Light

“Borrowing from her years of experience as a hospice volunteer, Mary Jo Bennett offers both practical advice and thoughtful reflection on the art of caring for the terminally ill. When Autumn Comes is invaluable to hospice volunteers and other caregivers, who are struggling with the nitty-gritty details of care and the deeper questions that often arise through such loving work.”

James Hallenbeck, M.D., Assistant Professor of Medicine, Stanford University School of Medicine and author of Palliative Care Perspectives

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Practical Guide for the Hospice Volunteer.......2007-03-18

The experiences of dying individuals in this book were compelling and insightful. Each chapter tells a story of a hospice patient's unique situation and challenges from the perspective of a volunteer. In the margins, the author would pose insightful questions about ethical dilemmas, boundary issues, or problems, that she encountered in this particular assignment. For this reason, selected chapters might serve as effective case studies and be suitable for a training class or discussion group for hospice volunteers.

There is a glossary of medical and hospice terms in the back of the book and a very practical chapter on the physiological process as one is actively dying. Although the author writes openly about her sadness and feelings of ambivalence and conflict, her personal story speaks for the value of compassion in this line of work yet the tone is never maudlin or despondent. Personal opinions are balanced with pragmatism.

In summary, I would recommend this book to hospice volunteers but also to people who are trying to get a deeper understanding of the general hospice experience.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised!.......2005-04-01

I was pleasantly surprised and enlightened by reading this informative book on hospice care. Very well done, with an interesting personal touch.

5 out of 5 stars The Gift of Listening.......2005-03-12

I have been an RN for over 30 years and a hospice nurse for 14 years. As I read When Autumn Comes I discovered how Mary Jo Bennett brings her gift of listening with her whole heart to each encounter with those approaching death. It is clear that she offers a caring and quiet spirit to her patients and shows how we can also.

5 out of 5 stars Autumn Came.......2005-03-03

I found "When Autumn Comes" to be very inspiring as well as comforting reading at the time my father was passing on. I think more than anything it helped me to recognize my own agenda vs. my father's real needs and state of mind. This book helped me to not be so afraid of death and instead to support my father and actually encourage him in this process by my mindful presence. I will never forget this rich experience of being at his side until the moment when he took his final breath. It was an honor, a joy and a privilege and I am so grateful to have had this guidebook for support to enhance my spiritual understanding of the death process.

5 out of 5 stars A Powerful Book.......2005-02-24

The stories Ms. Bennett tells in When Autumn Comes have the power to penetrate deeply into relationship spaces most of us are unwilling to go without a guide. She has learned the sacred art of listening, and challenges me to ask this burning question everywhere I go these days, "How can I help?"

Book Description

A pioneering music journalist's wry, candid, and hard-hitting look at aging and death.

As witness to and participant in the graying of the first generation of rock 'n' roll fans, Richard Meltzer is well equipped to confront the reality of our shared mortality. A sublime and moving collection of essays by a master of style, Autumn Rhythm is a clear-eyed gape into the Abyss that is equal parts candor, courage, humor, and desperation.

From deconstructing the "geezer wardrobe" to the wacked-out notion of one's legacy to the inevitable loss of pets, parents, and lovers, Autumn Rhythm is an unflinching staring contest with the One Thing We All Have In Common from a writer whose work has always been grounded in the syncopation of sound and sense.

4 out of 5 stars Rants on Geezerhood from Old Man Meltzer .......2005-09-20

This is an uneven collection of rants and reflections on growing old from the grey area between middle and old age. Like most people who find the world changing more quickly than their ability to adjust to those changes as they grow old, Meltzer strives to make a virtue out of his inability to adapt to computers and the Internet, indiscriminately lumping them together with MTV and other, less benign, cultural excrescences. These sections are rather hackneyed and about what you'd hear from any aging 60's-survivor barfly muttering over his beer. More effective are Meltzer's unflinching descriptions of the physical decay and the loss of old friends and enemies that accompany staying alive over time. Read and heed, young people, and see what you have to look forward to (not that there's much you can do about it).

4 out of 5 stars He's Ba-a-ack!.......2003-11-11

He's a curmudgeon always was, a cat with a taste for sour cream, a brilliant distressingly human type guy. Won't lie down and go to sleep on top of pedestals. Falls off roaring words, heart blazing from both barrels. He's a rock, jazz, and culture critic I first remember from the sixties. He saw through the ominous commercialization of music and culture back then, and he's been sawing through ever since.

If you're aging and alive as ever, remember something huge happening in the 60's that had nothing to do with misty water-colored memories, wonder how the exhilarating changes that took place for so many of us could have been so thoroughly distorted, effaced and buried in reams of ridicule, 'serious' criticism and nostalgic pap, (whew but true), Meltzer might be just what your bruised spirit needs.

If yr a cat with a taste for sour creem.

This book is a very enjoyable "read," and the author reveals himself as an excellent writer with a great sense of humour. I'd recommend it to anyone... especially someone heading for a casino, but by no means limited to "gambler types."

3 out of 5 stars Blackjack with alot of cliches.......2005-07-05

Blackjack Autumn covered some interesting stories of the ups and downs of blackjack, I play alot of blackjack and know the highs and lows. Barry kind of over kills the cliches though. I would recommend this book to people who enjoy blackjack stories but may not appeal to the casual reader.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable.......2002-07-19

This guy is pretty funny. As other's have mentioned, he really overdoes the metaphors, and it gets tiresome. "As (blank) as" is written probably a hundred times in this book. Or, in the writer's parlance, "the author uses this same joke form about as often as guppies ovulate." Or, "the author pulls out this joke form faster than than Pee Wee Herman would go down boxing Mike Tyson." When he's not using those lines though, he can be LOL funny. And of course, for any blackjack player, stories like his are pretty much irresistable. If you have ever fantasized about making money as a card counter, buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A really fun book.......2001-04-03

I loved this book. It isn't the one to read if you want to learn to count cards at blackjack, but really gives a wonderful description of what casinos are like. Barry Meadows isn't Paul Theroux, but he is a lot funnier and sounds like a much nicer guy. Anyone who loves visiting Nevada will love this one. If you haven't visited Nevada, you will want to after you read this book.

2 out of 5 stars I hated the author's sense of humor.......2000-09-30

I was really looking forward to reading this book. However, the author's attempts at making witty jokes throughout the novel really grow old. There's a couple on every page, and they're not good. Even the stories he had to write weren't exactly gripping.

I much prefer the dated "Ken Uston on Blackjack" if you want to read about high-stakes, professional Blackjack play.

5 out of 5 stars Love forever.......2002-03-24

Evrybody should read this book, and I mean it. Elsa talks about what make us humans beings, not just beings. Inconditional love, patience, solidarity, courage, dignity, laughs, empathy and more. This book is about loving and accepting people as it is, no judgments are needed. Elsa gives us a leson of humanity. She was the Mom/Ma that we all should have.

The book will make you laugh and cry, because hard experiences are written, but happy times are written too. What I really like of this book is the sincerity: what the hell do you care if I sleep with a woman or with a man? It shouldn't matter, but unfortunately it still does matter. That is the reason why we need more people like Elsa and more people reading this book.

Read it! It will make you a better person.

5 out of 5 stars Unconditional Love.......2002-02-10

To read a book that is so intense and moving that it exudes deep emotions about a rare thing as unconditional love is overwhelming.

I must congratulate Elsa Burgess Flores on overcoming so much, and for staying brave, in spite of all of the heartache, and for being the kind of MOM every kid should have - loving, understaning, resourceful, patient, courageous and for holding out hope for those who are still here, and need of help.

God bless her work, and may God confort her heart, for her loss, which is so incredible, it's hard to imagine anyone more wonderful than her, who chose to make the very negative into the very positive.

Elsa, I know your sons are rooting for you from the other side! I am too!

I highly recommend this book be read by everyone!

Charlie.

5 out of 5 stars Autumn Farewell Review.......2002-01-16

I have read this wonderful book three times; each time it moved and touched me deeply. I will probably read it again!

The contents of this book depicts a taste of everything that it takes to be a human being, to feel the intense love that continues after a tragedy and the terrible cruelty provoked by the ignorance and the lack of spirituality.

I believe that everyone should hear what Elsa has to say. Her book is much more than a book of memories. It is a diary of what happened to one mother and her two sons. The book is a lesson in humanity; a quality that so many of us forget and yet we call ourselves humans.
