Book Description
The sheriff of Justice, Illinois, is hunting a killer. Women visiting town are being murdered, tourists in nice hotels, money still in their billfolds, jewelry still on the dresser. Quiet kills--they go to sleep and never awaken. The sheriff is not pleased to find the new detective in town, Rae Gabriella, working the case on behalf of one of the families. She's staying in the same hotel as one of the victims--and her looks suggest she could be the next victim.

Fully up to standard with her previous works........2007-10-09
I read this book a little under a year ago, so it's taken me awhile to write a review, but here are some of the details that stand out when I think of the book:
Like I sometimes hopelessly wait for a movie to get good, I hopelessly waited for this book to get bad, expectations on the other reviews I had read. It didn't. In fact, the character emotions, their language, Dee's style and attention to even minute details and gestures were all present. I found friendship with both men and Rae's ties to each wonderfully lit upon, and the use of friendship with no clear romantic choice at the end not a disappointing change--Dee's written friendships are as poignant as her romantic relationships.
As for the loose ends... well, this IS the first in a series (or so advertised), and even so, these did not seem to me ends that could be tied up so easily (the factory), or without AT LEAST a couple hundred more pages (the drugs). If at all.
This book is certainly one I proudly loan out, and one I'll keep on my shelf to reread. When it gets too worn to keep together, I'll replace it. While I certainly hope there will be a sequel, either way Dee's writing is not lax here.
I'm still a Dee Henderson fan!.......2007-06-07
I was a little surprised by how low some of the reviews were for this book. I really enjoyed it, particularly the extra complexity. It definitely kept me up past my bed time reading. I found I didn't mind the "cliffhanger" ending as to who did it, probably because I'm absolutely convinced I know who it was. I agree with others thought that Rae's relationship with the two men was problematic. I didn't feel there was ANY chemistry between her and Nathan, so I don't think her "dating" two men added anything to the story (I admit, I do like Bruce and am rooting for him).
I'll be looking forward to the sequel, but if the "romance" aspect doesn't change quickly in the next book, I'll soon lose interest.
Interesting ride with a bad finish.......2007-05-24
Many authors have a few manuscripts in the drawer that couldn't find a publisher immediately. Before I Wake could fit in that category. Despite its flaws, it was hard to put down, but almost uncomfortably so. The constant dialogue kept things moving but didn't allow time to absorb what was going on. I felt ungrounded through most of the book. However, I can't be too upset since many authors overdo the narration. I commend Dee Henderson for experimenting with a breakneck pace, but it didn't work entirely in her favor.
Others have commented on the problems with the ending, and I'm grateful to see that there is at least a sequel. But there were too many "false leads" throughout the book. I suspect that Henderson is setting up the future books, but she did too much for one volume.
After all this, three stars? First, I fought hard to have opportunities to read this book during a very busy week. It kept me interested in spite of its pacing problems. Second, Rae is an intriguing character, and I'll be interested enough in further characterization of her to read the sequel (although I might get it from the library instead of buying it immediately.) Third, my big complaint about the O'Malley series is that the six books are a little formulaic, and Before I Wake is breaking new ground, particularly for the Christian market. So I will give Henderson some grace, read old favorites to refresh my soul and await the sequel with great curiousity.
Christian Crime.......2007-05-07
Wow, it was a great book! It was thrilling and fun to read. Hope there's a sequel!
Caught Between Two Men.......2007-05-02
Rae Gabriella moves to Justice, IL to get away from her past as an FBI agent and an investigation that went wrong. She has taken a job in Justice with her former boyfriend Bruce Chapel, now only a friend, in his private investigation firm. No sooner does she blow into town than Sherrif Nathan Justice (the town was named for a distant relative) is taken with her. He begins to court her and realizes that Bruce has more than friendly feelings for her. She seems to be caught between the two Christian men, sort of dating both, all the while trying to be just friends to both. Then women who are visiting the town start mysteriously dying, and the Sheriff becomes concerned that Rae is a newly arrived woman who might become a victim of the killer. The murders seem to be connected to local designer drug trafficing. As Rae becomes involved in the investigation, Nathan and Bruce try to protect her from the killer. I really like Rae. She's an attractive, smart, capable woman. What really disturbed me was that she didn't seem to be aware that she was playing with the emotions of these two men who were both falling in love with her. She was really dating them both, and not being honest with herself as to what she was doing. I found that disturbing in a Christian female character who I really wanted to like, and did like.

Book Description
Her USA Today bestseller, Play Dead, was called "an exceptional thriller."* Now, Anne Frasier delivers a new blockbuster about a one-time criminal profiler who will risk everything-even her own sanity-to lure out of hiding the madman who murdered her family. Even if it means she becomes the number-one suspect.
Customer Reviews:
Okay, but could have been much better.......2006-11-07
This is the third book I've read by Anne Frasier and I loved the other two, but this one seemed to be lacking something. First was the main character, Arden. While Arden did have demons to face, she was not very sympathetic and was hard to cheer for. In fact, she was almost unlikable, but I grew more tolerant of her as the book progressed. Her brother, Daniel, was a putz. Some serial killer should have put him out of his misery. Eli, Noah, Franny, Harley and Fury were pathetic. Is no one happy out there? This plot had some great promise. There was a government conspiracy that was never really brought to fruition except to say that it was discovered. There were unintended results from secret experiments which were explored but not to the potential for real horror that was available. The book was 372 pages long and I guessed the identity of the killer on page 84 and nothing that happened from that page on turned me away or even made me suspect that I may have been wrong. The killer was painfully obvious to the point of my asking, "What are you people thinking? You're FBI agents for gods sake. Do we need the Scooby-Doo gang to show what a clue looks like?" Had this been the first book I had read by Anne Frasier I may have not read another. Maybe it was just disapointing because the other ones were so good. Not sure. Anyway, this book was okay and the last half of it moved pretty well even if you know who the killer is and the pretty incredible stuff that goes on during the blizzard...Some real super human efforts here. Finally, if you are ever attacked by a mad serial killer just hope that you are in Lake County Ohio where they apparently have the best paramedics in the history of the planet, and you will know what I mean after you read what happens to some of these characters who survive. Look, I've been to Lake County and it's pretty nice, but I'm not too sure they really have that level of emergency care available. There or anywhere.
In the end, only your mind is a safe place of refuge. Or is it?.......2006-02-22
Anyone who has experienced emotional trauma knows how deeply it unsettles you. Reality tilts out of focus. You question who you are, where you've been, and whether you've really done what you remember.
Meet Arden Davis, former criminal profiler.
Wait, I know what you're thinking. You're wrong. We're not talking the Dr. Freud, leatherette couch, tell-me-about-your-feelings variety of criminal profiler. Arden went the distance. They took her to the brink. In the dark, alone, and with time ceasing to have meaning, they fed her the killer's thoughts. They hatched a madman's consciousness in her mind. Knowing him, being him, Arden was going to catch him.
But he beat her. Her brought the world's evil crashing onto her family. For that, she could never forgive herself. Buried in that guilt, Arden Davis went to sleep.
But sleep never lasts. The madman recants the murder of Arden's parents before his execution. The real killer may still be loose. Can Arden take that chance?
When she chooses to return to the FBI and the remote institute where the horrors began, the killing begins again. The demons have followed her. And the darkness.
Take a wild ride! See what can hatch in the quiet hallways of the human brain. Anne Frasier delivers! You won't be able to put this one down. Five stars!!
Plus one.
A great read........2005-05-24
I picked up a copy of BEFORE I WAKE and planned on reading just a few chapters before I went to bed, but found myself still sitting on the couch at 3 in the morning, flipping through the final pages. I have liked all of Anne Frasier's books, particularly HUSH -- great character development and forward momentum. BEFORE I WAKE is the first of the post-HUSH novels that really had me hooked from beginning to end though. I think a lot of it has to do with the ease in which i was able to identify with Arden, the main character -- I get where she's coming from and she doesn't feel flat and two-dimensional like a lot of thriller novel protagonists. It did take me a little while to get used to the idea of mind bleaching, it seemed a little far-fetched for me at first, but I quickly found myself buried in the story. It definitely helps that Frasier's writing is clever and funny, even in the scariest of situations. Anyway, it's really a well-written book and more importantly, a fun read from beginning to end.
Convincing and frightening.......2005-05-07
I picked up Before I Wake on a whim, and wow, I'm glad I did!! This book is good. The characters have the nuance and contradiction of real people despite playing roles that could have easily ended up cartoonish in a lesser author's hands. The deft pacing kept me hooked until the end. I have the feeling that I won't be able to shake the mysterious atmosphere of Before I Wake for a long time... and that's a very good thing!
What were you thinking?.......2005-05-04
This physcological thriller is a little too physcological for me. I got very tired of the split and fractured personalities of almost everyone in this book. Saying that, let me go on.
Arden Davis was a profiler for the FBI. She took part in an experiment to help her understand the serial killer's minds better. Many people dropped out but she persevered until she went home for Christmas and supposedly one of the serial killers she was learning about killed her family. It was his signature MO. When he was being executed he revealed that he DID NOT kill her family, he tells Nathan Fury in a note that he killed the rest but not them.
Nathan Fury is an FBI agent who started the program run by a brillant scientist, but he dropped out when he started thinking about killing as the ultimate high. He figures maybe Arden killed them while in some kind of trance taken over by the evil mind that has been fed into her brain. He finds her tending bar in Arizona and although they have had an affair she doesn't remember him at all. She had let the agency give her a brainwipe to remove her memories, unfortunately it hadn't quite worked, she still had vague memories and dreams, she couldn't trust herself that anything she remembered was real.
When Fury reveals what French(the serial killer) told him, he convinces her to come back to the lab so they can determine what happened. This woman is so physcotic you don't know what is going on. She is promiscuious, paranoid and so wrapped up in her own mind she can't function very well.
Even though the experiment was supposedly stopped, there are several more people at the saniterium. This was the biggest mess I have read in a long time. I did not like any of the characters and by the end I just wanted all of them dead, so I could stop reading. I just have to finish any book I start and this one was way over the top. Even at the end we have no idea how much of these killers she absorbed. Any one who would let a scientist mess with their brain like this deserves what he gets. Don't waste your TIME or money.

finally a book for the person dying.......1999-09-23
I work with Hospice patients and have not found a book better than this for the dying person. The chapters are short, personal, humerous, insightful and have helped so many people that have had it read to them. They especially like the chapter on nightime and fear...usually because I will read it to them in the middle of the night when anxiety and fear abound. I am grateful that this book exists- it is one of a kind.

Choosing to stop futile suffering.......2007-03-17
What was vaguely addressed in this book was that suicide because of depression or mental problems is a very poor choice and should not be the first option but euthanasia for those suffering agonizing, debilitating illness should be a choice made when the mind of the victim is still lucid enough to make such a final decision. If you were in excruciating pain from which there was no relief, bedridden, and no hope for any quality of life ever, you might give this book 5 stars. In that situation, you would fully understand why ending life may be the very best thing to do for yourself. I deducted one star because the problem of suicide because of depression needed to be further discussed and discouraged more strongly.
Authorza Douchebag`.......2006-12-05
What a sad excuse for a book. Mr. Humphry, why don't you try being a man and follow through on some of the sick advice you are dispensing?
Let Me Die Before I Wake.......2006-12-05
My Mother was a paranoid schizophrenic. She got this book somehow and made notes and underlined things. What a sick book! She commited suicide thanks to this example of irresponsible publishing.
Recipe for tragedy..........2000-02-03
This book is an ode to death; a manual for self-deliverance, even for those who are not terminally ill it offers some very lucrative suggestions. One year ago my friend took his own life, he was only 32 yrs. old with no terminal illness. He had mentioned Derek Humphrey's methods as very "cool ideas". So, if you or someone you know would like the easy way out, then definetly read this book. If you would like to live a while longer and offer hope to those suffering rather than the quickest exit possible, you may want to choose a more uplifting book.
Moving accounts of dying people who accelerated their ends.......1995-11-19
This book preceeded the textbook on euthanasia, Final Exit,
and is different in that it relates true stories of dying
people and exactly how they took their lives to escape
prolonged suffering.

Customer Reviews:
A Great Holocaust Book........2007-05-19
If I Should Die Before I Wake is a thrilling book about hate, murder, and hope. I really enjoyed this book as I got two different views of the Jewish life. This book takes you into different worlds of very different girls trying to find a place in this world. I didn't really enjoy hearing all of the gruesome details that went on in Auschwitz during the Holocaust, but it just made the book even that more interesting.
This book starts by telling you the story of young Hilary, a present day neo-Nazi that is full of hate to her Jewish neighbors. By being in a coma Hilary enters a whole different world, a world belonging to Chana, a Jewish teenager in Poland during World War 2. She must survive the cruel ghetto and stay alive in terrible Auschwitz.
If you want to read a compelling book full of hope and faith this is the book for you. It shows you that in the most horrible of situations you can still find peace and love. Read and see what happens when Hilary's perception of the whole world changes.
If I should Die Before I Wake.......2006-10-25
If I Should Die before I Wake by Han Nolan is a heartbreaking novel about a sixteen-year-old named Hilary. Hilary hates Jews. But, as fate would have it, after a terrifying motorcycle accident with her boyfriend, Hilary lies dying in a Jewish hospital. She starts slipping in and out of reality, and is bombarded by dreams from another place, time and person. She becomes Chana, a Polish Jew during the Holocaust. After her father's death at the hands of the Nazis, she gets caught up in a roundup and is transported to the Lodz ghetto with the rest of her family. Many do not survive there, but those who do get sent to the mass gassings of Auschwitz. The scent of death lingers, and Chana can't run or hide from the looming red sky, while Hilary is flung into memories of her shattered past. I really liked this book because it kept switching between the visions of Hilary and Chana. It was also very descriptive and you can see changes in the characters as the story progresses. It's not a very happy book, and so if you want something that will make you cry, this could be a possible outlet for your tears. This story of two broken lives that somehow intertwine despite their differences will teach you so much about strength of character, and strength of heart.
VERY REALISTIC and a great insight into the minds of both Neo-Nazi's and Jews (at the time of WWII).......2006-06-17
It is the story of a young teenage girl named Hillary who was speeding on a motorcycle with her boyfriend, Brad, when they "crashed and burned," leaving Brad unharmed, but Hillary inches from death. She was rushed to a Jewish hospital, where she is slipping back and forth through consciousness, unable to contact anyone around her for the time she is in bed.
When she is "unconscious," she is a girl named Chana. Chana is a Jewish girl, living in the years a little before and during the war. While she is Chana, it is only Gestapo members on the streets, beating down the Jews and their pride. Eventually, they are all sent to a Jewish ghetto, where daily life consisted of a body under a 2-story building window, filth, disease, hard manual labor, families of eight to ten living in one room apartments, and more death.
Then later, when the SS lines them all up yet again, she is almost deported, but when not, she escapes in the dead of night. For a time, she is able to pose as a Polish citizen, when someone she used to know rats her out as she gets on a train to be part of a Polish worker round-up, which had meant freedom.
She is then imprisoned until she is sentenced to "hard work" for life, and is sent to Auschwitz. The real Chana survives the war.
During all of this, Hillary sees what the Jews had to go through. She started out in the beginning completely hateful. She is part of a plan that locked up a Jewish boy in one of her schools lockers without food or water for a few days, and her Neo-Nazi group, the Warriors, are about to participate in a huge march.
Her mother also comes into the story, and stays by her bedside as the story progresses, but Hillary's mother, we find out, is another reason she became a Neo-Nazi, as they have had no relationship during her childhood (her dad was her "lifeline"). Then We see Hillary starting to talk (to herself as others stand around her), she reveals that she's had an empty chalky feeling ever since she was five, until Brad came into her life. It was he who influenced her to be recruited into the Warriors. Brad later comes to visit, with constant "Heil Hitler's" and informs her that they are going to torch the hospital, then leaves saying: "You're a hero, Hil. Remember that. You're dying for the cause, White Power! ... Heil Hitler babe. See you in hell."
The fire turns out to fail, and the real Chana herself has just died of cancer as an old woman in the bed next to Hillary, but in was Chana who was able to supernaturally share her past with Hillary. Hillary is now changed, as this has been a very humbling experience.
A truly amazing story.......2006-06-09
"If I should die before I wake" is a wonderful novel! The book gives you a very good look on the holocaust. It gives you some pretty rough images, but it makes you think and it makes you appreciate freedom. The author worded this book beautifully, almost as if you were there. You can really imagine Hillary and her neo-nazi gang. You can also get a real good feel about Chana and what was going on. This book if for ages 12 and up. I think kids will like this book, if they are a good reader and able to grasp what is going on. Older men and woman will, I think enjoy this bok as well. I am fourteen years old, I love to read and was able to get the jist of the story pretty fast and I loved it. I loved everything, cover to cover. I would recomend this book to anybody willing.
If I should die before I wake.......2006-04-27
The book, If I should die before I wake, is about a girl named Hillary who is a neo-Nazi and slips into a comma after getting into a motorcycle accident with her boyfriend. While shes in a comma her mind drifts off into the dream of another persons life. The other life that she enters is a Jewish girl named Chana who is living her life in consentration camps.
The book switches back and forth between Hillary and Chana, telling what is going on in reality and Chana's past. It can get confusing at first but then you know who is talking. The beginning of the book is very interesting. As soon as you start to read it, it grabs your attention and makes you want to read more. The book is very well detailed in exciting and gripping ways. I enjoyed it a lot.

If I should Die Before I wake.......2003-02-07
...The book grabbed me and stuck with me all these years. I connected with Deanna when she had to deal with her over bearing mother, her weight problem and the way she stood up for herself. I loved the way she first met Matt at the hospital, not knowing he was a patient. The way they became friends and then how beautifully their romance grew. Especially over labor day weekend at Matt's vacation home. It was every teenage girl's dream. I admired Deanna's strength, courage and her heart.
I just recently bought this book for my eleven year old daughter. This is a wonderful book. I strongly recommend it.
Don't read if you are very emotional!!!.......2003-01-23
This book has to be the most romantic and honest book of all time! I give "If I Should Die Before I Wake" (Lurlene McDaniel) five stars *****. Deanne's mother has her whole life figured out for her, while Deanne doesn't want to be the "star of social register" like her mother dreams. Deanne decides to do something useful, so she became a volunteer worker at the local hospital. At the hopsital, Deanne learns every important life lessons starting from friendship and sharing secrets with her best friend, to life and death relationships. When she makes friends with one of the cancer patients, it changes her life forever.
My favorite childhood book.......2001-09-10
I got this book from a book club when I was about 9 years old. Through the subsequent years, I read this book at least 40 times. It is a lovely story about a young woman growing up, learning about love, and learning about grief. Somewhere along the way, I lost my battered and worn copy. But all this time, I've remembered this book as one of the first to ever move me and to instill in me a lifelong love of reading. I recommend it to any parent trying to get a girl more interested in reading. Hopefully, I'll be able to reaquire a copy soon...

Now that the beast is dead, the Riccoli kids will have sweet dreams again. Or so they think. But the creatures has left the kids' nightmares to terrorize them in real life.
And waking nightmares are the scariest of all.

It was really good, but REALLY scary!.......2005-06-12
I felt really bad for Eva Sullivan because it wasn't her falt, I feel really bad for her because she was only 7 1/2 years old and she went through so many falls, and hurt herself. Overall it was a REALLY good book, I don't recomend it fo children under 10 (even though I'm 9!) There is a scary movie of If I die before I wake, even scarier than the book!
Eva's at it again!.......2005-01-03
The monster who The Twins,Todd,Winston, and Amy thought was dead is back and out for revenge. It was The Sullivan Mansion, before it became the Riccoli Mansion. You see,Mrs.Wakefield baby-sat Eva Sullivan when she was the twins age.Mr and Mrs.Sullivan are now dead, and Eva is dead,or so everyone thought. She's the one who set the fires.Mr.B? The gardner fed her and I think she escaped from a home or something like that. Now,She dies.

was pretty good, but you have to read the other 3. some parts were a bit strange, but overall it was alright. my favorite part in this book is where liz and jess go to the cemetary and play hide-and-seek with eva.
Great book..........2004-07-28
I really liked this book, but if you're thinking of reading this, you should get Sweet Valley Twins #97, 98, and 99. You should read it in that order, too. Things will make more sense and it will be a better story.
This book was a little spooky, I have to say. I read this book before sleeping. I had a dream/nightmare that I was sitting at my kitchen table at midnight when all of the sudden a twisted hand was scrapping my back door.
I recommend this book to Sweet Valley Twin lovers. Most of the books have problems and solutions. This one has a mystery, and it was a good mystery.

You won't be able to put this down.......2002-05-28
This is quite possibly the most moving and yet troubling book I have ever read. I wish it were required reading in high school. The book addresses an issue of which everyone in this country should be aware.
Book Description
Time doesn't fly when you're not having fun.
Sometimes school is a drag. Or maybe you think school is a blast if you do, chances are it isn't because you actually like school, but because of the fun you have with your friends.
Friends are important.
Especially Christian friends, They call you down from dancing on the fence
when you're tempted to ditch your convictions
when you want to go with a non-Christian
when popularity becomes your ultimate goal
Ignoring your friends' pleas could result in a major slip-up like losing you footing and planting your face into the ground on the wrong side of the fence. If you want to survive and thrive at school, you need to know how to hook up with Christian friends who help you grow your friendship with God.
This book maps out God's way to conquer school, get along with peers, and find friends who count. And it shows you one more big thing how to run to God when everyone else lets you down.
