5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-05-11

Now that I've read everything by O'Connor (including works that were part of her thesis for her degree in writing) I am still amazed and inspired by her work. I'm not from the south or Catholic and I was not alive during the eras of which she wrote, but her writing transcends region and time. My favorites remain A Good Man is Hard to Find, Everything That Rises Must Converge, and Revelation, but I love all her stories, although I find the novels a bit more challenging - I think short story was her finest form. Her ability to mix desperation and violence with comedy is amazing, and often when I read her I think: "I shouldn't be laughing at that." I often wonder what additional work she would have produced if she had not died so young. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great literature in great binding.......2007-01-16

I am thoroughly enjoying this authoritative collection of O'Connor's writings. The writing speaks for itself as truly great and unique. This particular book is very classy and well put together; an excellent choice for someone with a significant interest in O'Connor.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Grace.......2006-01-21

How sweet the sound that saved this wreched human race. O'Connor writes of God's love and redemption of humanity. She uses exaggeration to make her point. Her characters are so very silly, obtuse, bigoted, loathsome they become cartoons, yet there is a deep integrity to their shallowness. She's not making fun of them, but giving them the justice of a pitiless description. Indeed they do not seem judged, but naked -- the fruits of their stupid, misguided ideas and actions on display. And these children of God do shocking things to others and themselves. And yet . . ..

And yet God allows them to live and learn, or not learn if that is their inclination. He gives them this freedom. He loves them. How can this be? How?

I love O'Connor for her art, her convictions, her courage, and her love. She is so very true and honest.

In addition to her novels and a thorough selection of short stories, there is a chronology of her life and a selection of her letters which are rewarding reading. The book itself is a wonderful object. The pages are of fine paper. The binding is such that you can lay it open on a table without breaking its back, and the pages will not move unless a breeze or you do so.

5 out of 5 stars a lovely book.......2004-12-23

Oh yes! I adore her, and so do my mum and dad. They talk about her all of the time, and so I grew up with the prose ringing in my ears. I am so pleased to be reading her now.

5 out of 5 stars Just Read It All.......2004-09-02

The complaints about the poor organization of the collection can be overcome by simply reading it from front to back. Surely it is that good.

My foray into the works of Flannery O'Connor, a southern, gothic author of darkly humorous novels and short stories came via a recommendation in Harold Bloom's, "What to Read and Why." As it turned ot, I had read one of her short stories, "A Good Man is Hard to Find," in a collection somewhere and had been surprised and shocked, by the turn of events and ending of the story, so much so, that I remembered it instantly, even though it has to have been thirty years since I read it. I enjoyed everything, short stories, novellas, and even her letters. She writes about southern Christ-haunted people, most backward, all damned, but many redeemed. Bloom says that according to her, we are all damned but one should put that aside and simply enjoy her beautiful, grotesque, and wonderful comedic stories. Her protagonist is often a woman, forced to take on a role and duties she didn't sign up for but resignedly and with no illusions playing and discharging both out of a sense of morality or necessity; those women are usually the most superior beings in her stories.

Many of her insights stick with me months afterwards. For example, O'Connor says in one of her letters, "...Hazel's integrity lies in his not being able to do so. Does one's integrity ever lie in what he is not able to do? I think that usually it does, for free will does not mean one will, but many wills conflicting in one man. Freedom cannot be conceived simply. It is a mystery and one which a novel, even a comic novel, can only be asked to deepen." That brought tears to my eyes -- perhaps because it is so beautifully put.

Book Description

What was supposed to be an Italian vacation for forensic anthropologist Gideon Oliver and his wife turns into a busman's holiday when their hosts' only child goes missing--and nearby construction workers unearth human bones. The family awaits Oliver's conclusions with both dread and cautious hope. But along the way, he'll expose some extraordinary deceptions that lay bare the long-hidden secrets at the dark heart of a highborn family.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good Blood--Light read.......2007-07-04

Gideon Oliver, his wife Julie and their friend, Phil Boyajian, are traveling to Italy. Phil is a guide for a bicycle touring group and he has pressed Julie into helping. Gideon goes to be with Julie and to visit Italy again.

While Phil and Julie are shepherding the cyclists, Gideon becomes involved in an ancient death that he discovers is a murder. In the meantime, there is a kidnapping of the dead man's relative.

This is a very light book, easily read in an afternoon or evening. There was very little suspense or mystery. The best part was discovering how the person was murdered and the murder weapon.

3 out of 5 stars Weak Blood.......2005-05-16

Aaron Elkins knows his stuff; he was one of a small coterie of forensic anthropologists. Many of his previous stories are suspenseful, macabre, or scary, although always carrying a patina of rationality.

This story takes off with two exciting, then ominous, events in the picturesque Italian lake country. Coincidentally, Profs. Gideon and Julie Oliver are there vacationing, and visit the padrone of a family whose son has just been kidnapped.

Unfortunately, Elkins miscalculates in the too-revealing Prologue and gives away one of the most vital final twists of the plot. If you don't get it right off you'll only find one more genuine clue (and another if you know medicine) until Gideon reveals all in a final set speech. For an ostensible mystery, Elkins' suspense is lax. They find the body of a character I hadn't even realized was missing. When Gideon is attacked, he coolly thinks about the "pressure on the soft tissues of the superior carotid triangles" (rather than being choked to death). This is humorous in a manner of speaking, but undercuts the suspense. Perhaps Elkins' research stay in Italy was just too sunny a time to inspire him.

Just sit back and enjoy the travelogue Elkins provides. Good Blood is even simpler than most Elkins, but has pleasant Italian people and details along the way, as well as restaurant recommendations in case you ever visit Lago Maggiore as he did. Elkins' prose is clean and light. He distances Gideon from the occasional ugly bits by his command of emotionless medical terminology when examining a murder victim's bones, or sleuthing by telephone. If you insist on reading this sub-par Elkins, the 11th rendition of Gideon's adventures, get the pb. Editing is a bit loose, resulting in howlers on pp. 73 and 120 of the hb.

5 out of 5 stars Relax and take a vicarious trip.......2005-05-07

Aaron Elkins is a travelers dream. His books are well written, pleasant, fast-paced mystery adventures. I find them wonderful reads when traveling for work -- always fun, with enough plot and pacing to keep you reading on the plane.

4 out of 5 stars For Italy Lovers.......2005-02-06

Aaron Elkins has set his eleventh Gideon Oliver mystery in the Piedmont region of Italy. The action takes place in the charming town of Stresa on Lake Maggiore, which is a refreshing pleasure for fans of Italian mysteries and a stark departure from the frequently used locations of Venice, Florence, or Rome. The story begins with a gripping 1960s prologue that introduces us to Domenico de Grazia's aristocratic family and sets the stage for the present day story that involves the next two generations of his family. When the present day story begins, Domenico has been dead for a decade and his son, Vincenzo, has inherited the responsibility of maintaining the estate and the good family name. When Vincenzo's rather obnoxious son, Achille, gets kidnapped, the case gets assigned to the Carabinieri's Colonel Tullio Caravalle.

Up to this point in the story it is very easy for the reader to forget that this "is" the next mystery in the Gideon Oliver series. One asks oneself just how could that famous American forensic anthropologist "Skeleton Detective" possibly get involved in this case. Well, Gideon and his wife Julie are assisting their friend Phil, from Seattle, put on a tour of the Italian lake country. Much to their surprise Phil is really Filiberto Ungaretti and a close relative of the de Grazia family in Stresa. So when, shortly after their arrival, a skeleton is found, Gideon is asked to help identify the remains and therefore gets deeply involved in this case and the kidnapping along with the very competent Colonel Caravalle. Together by combining their talents, Gideon and Caravalle proceed to unravel these two interesting and complex cases. Over the course of the story, we get introduced to all of the members of the extended de Grazia family thus furnishing a long list of suspects.

I commend Elkins for his research on this one. I loved his Italian references, particularly the occasional phrases and the food descriptions. His Lake Maggiore setting makes one want to go visit and explore more. Except for protagonist Gideon and his wife Julie, all of the characters were Italian. As a regular visitor to Italy, I found these characters credible and loved all of the petty family infighting. In my opinion, this the best mystery novel Aaron Elkins has written. I would really like him to do more novels set in Italy.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable mystery with a nice Italian setting.......2004-04-03

It was supposed to be a peaceful vacation in Italy, but when his friend's relative is kidnapped, American forensic anthropologist Gideon Oliver offers his assistance. The kidnapping was badly botched--resulting in the death of the chaufeur, but Italian police Colonel Caravale can't see any use for a high-powered bone man. They know what killed the chaufeur. Still, bones do turn up--on property owned by the aristocratic family of the kidnapped boy. And Caravale doesn't believe in coincidence. Still, could a skeleton that looks to have been underground for a decade have anything to do with a kidnapping?

Caravale and Gideon overcome initial distrust and begin to work together as a team--but someone is watching and knows too much. Gideon finds that the decade-old murder poses real danger to him--in the present. What started out as a vacation just might end up terminal.

Author Aaron Elkins combines the best elements of an Italian opera, forensic science, and an old-fashioned cozy in his well written and entertaining GOOD BLOOD. The aristocratic Italian family, with their internal feuds and snobish belief in the 'good blood' of the family, rings true as do Gideon and his friend Phil--the distant but looked down-on relative of the family who now makes his living giving cheap tours of the world. Elkins' strong descriptions make Italy come to life.

Aaron Elkins is an Edgar Award Winner and with GOOD BLOOD it's easy to see why. I recommend this one highly.

3 out of 5 stars It made me laugh which is a good start. to positive thinking........2007-04-16

While this CD may not be for everyone I can absolutely see it being helpful for others in their quest to manifest perfect weight. I really admire and respect Bob Proctor and his message, although short, is a good one that really sticks with you. Definitely food for thought, as it creates a positive image to hold in both the subconscious and conscious mind. The music is infectious because as silly as it might seem at first, you end up singing it to yourself long after you've stopped listening to the CD. Honestly, I feel it's worth a try for anyone who has the desire to BE their perfect weight.

1 out of 5 stars Okay...this is weird. .......2007-04-13

I bought "The Secret" from Amazon and am very pleased with that. I enjoyed Dr. Proctor a lot on that so I thought I would give this a try to lose weight.

Dr. Proctor barely speaks on this audio CD. I was not very inspired.

This CD is mostly Michele singing the same song over and over again. Perhaps one is supposed to be dancing during this whole thing--I guess that would work to lose weight. But then we all know that that is one of the things we are supposed to do. Fat people aren't dumb--they're just fat.

I actually fell asleep because the one song is so monotonous. Perhaps it's suppose to work sublimally while asleep.

I don't understand why anyone would give this 5 stars. I would love to talk to them and ask them if they lost weight and why they gave this product 5 stars.

I'm sending this back.

5 out of 5 stars Really Fun!.......2006-12-22

At first I thought the songs were a little silly, but they really stick in your head! Before I knew it I heard Bob Procter trying to sing and it put a smile on my face and got me feeling happy and positive. I wanted to move and do the things I know I should be doing. This was very helpful and very fun.

5 out of 5 stars A new approach.......2002-08-28

This audio book gave me a new view of my self-imposed limitations on my approach to weight control and healthy eating. Michele's spiritual and spirited techniques have inspired me to move away from negative behaviors and toward a healthier me. I highly recommend this audio book.

1 out of 5 stars Beware of this book!.......2002-10-03

I bought this book thinking it would explain about blood testing and how I can learn more about what each blood test means.

Well, after reading the book, I realize now that it's function is really a marketing tool to sell the YFH services that the author supplies.

5 out of 5 stars An Easy to Understand Guide to Improving Your Health.......2002-07-27

This book is an incredibly impactful and easy to understand guide to taking control of your health. It does a great job of presenting the details of blood testing and preventative medicine without getting too technical. The case studies were compelling and the reference material in the back is a very helpful guide to blood testing. I read the entire book in one sitting and found myself wanting to tell everyone I met about it. Definitely read this book if you are interested in learning how to become more proactive in maintaining or improving your health.

5 out of 5 stars Taking control of your health.......2002-06-07

Great book. There's so few options for actually taking control of your health and "preventive medicine" options which give you useful information. The book makes a strong argument for why you need more information than you get with a test from the doctor. There's also great information on some of the symptoms which could be the result of deficiencies in certain nutrients. Some of them hit home. I love being in control of my health and I'm ready to take the next steps and obtain the tests detailed in the book.

4 out of 5 stars Unique and Time-Tested Prevention Solutions.......2002-05-31

Modern medicine tends to use blood tests only to confirm the presence of disease. "Normal Blood Test Scores Aren't Good Enough!" makes it crystal clear how valuable they can be when used preventively. Find out why you shouldn't (and often can't) have your MD do preventive blood tests. Health, happiness, the avoidance of serious or life-threatening disease, and peace of mind can be the result of a good preventive plan. Ellie Cullen (the author and a registered nurse) also talks about some vitamins, minerals, and diet changes (including the blood-type diet) that have achieved miracles. The only imperfection is that the book has been more or less self-published, so the layout, photos, and editing are not the best. But, in a way, this just adds to the genuineness and personality of the message.

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Helpful.......2002-05-11

Lots of helpful information in this book. It's surprising to learn how "normal ranges" are derived in labratories and how and to whom your medical information is disseminated. Anyone having bloodwork done, for prevention or diagnosis, should take a look at this book first.

Book Description

Here is the most comprehensive, up-to-date, and helpful book of its kind ever published for the fifty million Americans who suffer from high blood pressure, or hypertension. An internationally acclaimed authority, Dr. Thomas Pickering is Professor of Medicine at the Hypertension Center at the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center in New York. He is a leading researcher and educator, and the author of over 350 scientific articles and three clinical textbooks. Reflecting all the latest cutting-edge research, Good News about High Blood Pressure explains new technological breakthroughs such as ambulatory monitoring, the best mainstream treatments for high blood pressure and high cholesterol, and the pros and cons of alternative treatments such as vitamins, herbs, and meditation.

Dr. Pickering reminds us that people suffering from hypertension do not necessarily exhibit any visible signs of stress or strain. In fact, in the vast majority of cases, hypertension produces no symptoms whatsoever, which is what makes it so deadly. This "invisible disease," which plagues its victims for life, can lead to heart disease and strokes -- the nation's leading causes of death and disability. The bad news is that just 65% of hypertension sufferers are aware of their condition, and only 49% are undergoing treatment. But the good news is that there are many new treatment options available that enable these people to keep their illness in check and live long and fruitful lives.

With over twenty-five years' experience in answering patients' questions about their condition, Dr. Pickering shows hypertension patients how to take charge of their situation by learning to monitor their own blood pressure and by making appropriate changes in their lifestyle. In order to control high blood pressure, he emphasizes, one must deal with the other risk factors for heart disease, such as smoking, excess weight, and high cholesterol. Accessible and informative, the book discusses recently released studies about the possible impact on high blood pressure of red wine, homocysteine, the obesity hormone leptin, and folic acid.

With its reassuring tone, comprehensive scope, and new research, Good News about High Blood Pressure encourages readers to take charge of their condition, rendering all other patient guides obsolete. It is about as close as a book can come to being an expert medical specialist on call to answer your questions twenty-four hours a day.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on high blood pressure.......2001-08-28

After reading many of the popular books on high blood pressure, I must rank this one the best. I was particularly happy with the chapter on "white coat hypertension" and blood pressuure measurement and the many related studies that he comments on. Many books tend to have just a paragraph on this subject and gloss over such an important issue. The chapter on the "work-up" was also very useful to me. Now I will feel much more comfortable about asking my own doctor about a renin-sodium profile and an echo-cardiogram to be included for me. I would have liked to see a discussion of the "uric-acid" debate. Perhaps the publication of the book predated this debate. I was also happy that he chose to have a separate chapter about high blood pressure in seniors. With a hyperensive 70 year-old mum to worry about, this chapter was a wonderful source of information. Like another reviewer, I felt the section on "Alternative Medicine" was relatively small and brusque. But in earlier sections Dr Pickering did consider the mineral supplement issues in depth - what he doesn't consider is whether one should be taking natural herb supplements. His discussion of meditation could be improved significantly. But a weak discussion of alternative medicine should not detract from an otherwise very useful and authoritative book. I hope Dr Pickering will give us an updated version of this book - and allow Dr Andrew Weil to write the section on alternative treatments

5 out of 5 stars Clear, scientific, rational guide for the hypertensive.......1999-11-11

The first reviewer's comment that "The only thing that kept me from giving him a five-star rating is his negative reaction to alternative treatments" convinced me to buy this book. I was looking for a book that explains what medical science actually knows about high blood pressure, and instead ran into a slew of "Smile your way out of hypertension!" pseudo-scientific nonsensicals. Fie on so-called "alternative" treatments: I wanted to read solid knowledge. I was relieved and pleased to find this book. Pickering presents what is known, describes tested treatments, is realistic about weight, exercise, and gender/race/age without being discouraging or fatalistic, and does it in a readable way. I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars This book is definitely worth reading.......1999-04-21

Dr. Pickering does a good job of explaining how your body works and its relationship to high blood pressure. He does a great job of interpreting conflicting studies. The only thing that kept me from giving him a five star rating is his negative reaction to alternative treatments.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Of The Best (The Book Is Good Too!).......2005-04-29

Alright, I admit it. I'm a card carrying member of the Nation. In fact, I'm damn proud of that fact. Being born in Ma, my first words were "Yankees suck." However, before somebody (ahem, Yankees fans) wire my ignition to an explosive, let me say that I found the book, though obviously skewed in the BoSox favor, is an interesting look at the rivarly none the less. A great read, even if you are a Yankees whore... I'm sorry, I meant fan.

5 out of 5 stars The Gospel According to Boston.......2005-04-24

There are people, although I can't imagine why, that would claim that this book is one sided. These are probably people who simply don't realize that damnyankee is one word. They probably don't even realize that this is a battle between the forces of good and the dark side of the force. They might, just might, you understand, even be people who say that this is only a game. I'm told that there are even people who said that who became President was more important, but I clearly don't belie that this is true, there just couldn't be such people.

Well, that's the tone of the book. If you're a Yankee fan (I guess there are still a few out there), you can expect to get your bowels in an uproar by reading this book. If you're a Red Sox fan, well, the book is only simple Gospel fact, with a bit of humor thrown in.

5 out of 5 stars Something for Everyone.......2005-04-18

Whether you are a Red Sox fan or not (and why not?) this book is fun, ingenious and lots of information for baseball diehards. Bill Nowlin and Jim Prime obviously enjoyed putting this book together and it shows with lots of humor and poking fun throughout. I loved the quotes at the beginning of each chapter..they just made me giggle!! Good work! Thanks for sheer pleasure and delight!!

5 out of 5 stars one of a million?.......2005-04-15

There seem to be a million new books on the Red Sox this year. It's probably more like 25. Most are self-congratulatory books that just celebrate the win, and maybe try to cash in on it. I see four or five that focus on the Red Sox/Yankees rivalry. This is one of the best. It seems to do two things at the same time. One, it digs a little deeper than most of the other books, going way back in history and not just the last few years. Two, it's a lot of fun! The authors take it seriously but also have a lot of fun. There are also a lot of interesting features, like ones that look at the trades between the teams and ones that present the stats of players who were both Red Sox and Yankees.

Another good book about this rivalry, though it just features on the last two years, is called A TALE OF TWO CITIES. But BLOOD FEUD is my favorite because it packs in so much information and has a lot of fun doing it.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive History of the Red Sox-Yankee Rivalry.......2005-04-15

This book is a rarity: a comprehensive history of two of baseball's greatest teams that is actually FUN to read. It has a slight Red Sox bias in tone, but is scrupulously fair to both teams. You will laugh out loud at some of the commentary, and true Yankee fans will laugh loudest - the way they do everything else!

Product Description

Expanded, revised and up-to-date second edition of this much sought-after book on high blood triglycerides. Some of the most important insights you can learn from this comprehensive source of practical information include: 1) health risks marked by high blood triglycerides; 2) right and wrong foods to lower (and prevent) elevated blood triglycerides; 3) effects of high-carbohydrate diet on the triglycerides synthesis and metabolism; 4) standard medical treatments and triglyceride-lowering prescription drugs; 5) dietary and lifestyle changes necessary make to optimize blood lipid profile; and 6) the unique dietary supplement that could be a regular part of your lifestyle as it would optimize the blood triglyceride levels. Authored by Andrew Mierzejewski, RHN, MA, an accomplished registered holistic nutritionist and president of Full of Health, this 182-page long, patient-centered book answers all questions and concerns you might have about triglycerides, their role in our health and the means of controlling them naturally, without multiple prescription drugs most conventional doctors recommend today. "Usually, there are no symptoms of high levels of triglycerides and hypertriglyceridemia may not be diagnosed until serious illnesses occur," reminds the author of the book. So we all need to beware. According to Andrew Mierzejewski, "the nutritional approach to elevated blood lipids is something almost everybody can do on his or her own and get real results - as opposed to taking risky medicines." "Although we might often wish otherwise," he concludes, "there are no »quick fixes« or »magic pills« on the road to well-being. Good health requires good will, courage and persistence. Who will make us well? We will!"

Good Morning Mr. Mierzejewski:

I just received your book that I had purchased a week ago or so! I am already writing to you because I was impressed by your use of the word "psychosclerosis" in conjunction with health. Indeed, that is what I usually see in people when I discuss anything "natural" with them.

I am not in the medical profession, but a close observer and practicing most natural treatments - without much medication involved.

I already love your book! Thanks for sharing it with us. You are paving the road for the new approach to health. Most people have forgotten that medication is often a poison helping them temporarily but not permanently!

The significance of reducing the sugar and/or any "white stuff" is very important for our health on the cellular level but it is still quite ignored by medical "authorities." I was a victim of it and I have to take back my life from the sugar-consumptive society that we live in today. I am trying to overcome my "psychosclerosis" issue too!

Nonetheless, it is good to have you on our side to help ourselves balance our health once more!

Thank you for helping us! :-)

Best regards,

Monique N.-S.
