Medical examiner Sara Linton and police chief Jeffrey Tolliver make their fourth appearance in this riveting new back-and-forth thriller that grounds a brutal attack by two young men on the Grant County, Georgia police department in a twelve-year-old Alabama murder case that occurred while Sara and Jeffrey were just beginning their tumultuous romance. En route to a beach vacation shortly after they meet, the couple takes a detour to the small town where Jeffrey grew up and began his law enforcement career. But their carefree holiday is interrupted when his best friend from childhood, a fellow cop, is charged with murder after killing a man who broke into his house. Despite his subsequent confession, Jeffrey believes there's more to the story than Robert is telling him, and when the skeleton of a young woman with whom both Robert and Tolliver were once involved is discovered in a secret cave only they knew about, and Robert admits to her murder too, Tolliver must again confront a past he thought he had long since put behind him.

Slaughter unravels a convoluted story deftly and smoothly as the action moves between those long-ago events and the siege of the police station by two young men who are determined to make Jeffrey pay for a crime they believe he committed. Threatening to kill whoever stands between them and their target--including eight children on a school field trip at the station house when the bloody siege begins--they execute a deputy they mistakenly believe is Tolliver. Skillfully blending past and present events and illuminating the equally convoluted relationship between Sara and Jeffrey (who have married and divorced in the intervening years) without interrupting the breathtaking pace of the action or dropping a beat, Slaughter takes this series to a new level of excellence. --Jane Adams

4 out of 5 stars Skeletons in the closet.......2007-08-06

It has long since been astablished that Jeffrey and Sara's relationship is haunted by ghosts from the past. Before, it was Sara's past that was causing a variety of troubles, but in the fourth Grant County instalment, we see that Jeffrey has his fair share as well.

The book begins with a hostage situation at Jeffrey's office. Some gunmen have come in and have left many dead, with Sara terrified and Jeffrey badly wounded. Lena is on the team, but she is hiding her own secrets. Having just returned to the police force, she fears she is pregnant by her abusive boyfriend. This takes a backseat as the story unfolds to that of Jeffrey and Sara's past.

When they are first dating, Jeffrey takes Sara to his hometown to meet his friends and family. Sara sees his family for the first time, realizing that Jeffrey came from a family and friend circle of bitter, angry people. Soon an accidental murder occurs, and Jeffrey seems to have altered some things at the scene to clear his childhood friend of suspision. Why? Why would Jeffrey, himself a policeman, do something so terrible as to obstruct justice? And the twists and turns are very surprising if not tragic. Fueling the horrible tragedy that their future marriage would bring about (partly because Sara could not have children because of her brutal rape years ago), it is discovered that Jeffrey had fathered a child with a woman from his high school years and was never told. We all have such dirty little secrets, things hidden away. But, no matter how much families and friends try to hide their mistakes, short comings, and trying to make everything look "right and respectable" despite their shame, the truth somehow comes out. It always does. Even the most adept liars can't go on forever living their lies. And lies, as we all know, aren't worth anything.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2007-05-13

Another great read in the continuation of these characters, Sara and Jeffrey. In "Indelible" you get to really know them from the beginning and "why" they are destined to be together, if not physically then emotionally tied.
My first Karin Slaughter book I read was "Faithless", which you may know is the last one in this series so far. I was so intrigued with it that I got the other books and read them so I am now caught up, so to speak. I can't wait until the next one comes out to see how their lives and the ones around them play out. Lena is a story in herself.

5 out of 5 stars Just the right mix of intriguing plot, believable characters and forensics!, .......2006-09-01

I wasn't sure I'd like the 'flashbacks' as Slaughter combined two stories into one, but she did this really well and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.
The main story is actually the 'flashback' but she cleverly combines the past and present as we learn about Jeffreys history and the beginning of his and Sara's relationship as well as discover the truth behind two earlier deaths.

Not boringly descriptive yet I could well imagine Sylacauga in Alabama and the characters who lived there.

The author really describes her characters and the feelings behind their actions well.

3 out of 5 stars Weaker than her previous novels........2006-08-15

I have to admit that I was slightly disappointed by this book
as I loved her previous works. It still contains all the trademark elements of earlier books but with the flashbacks in this one it did at times make it somewhat of a muddled tale.

2 out of 5 stars Too Lurid and Unpleasant to be Enjoyable.......2006-08-11

Karin Slaughter is known as a something of a "blood and guts" thriller novelist. Her books are typically filled with tons of graphic and sexual violence, usually perpetuated against women and children. This fourth book, INDELIBLE, is pretty much more of the same. If you like her prior books, this novel will pretty much meet your expectations.

This book is essentially two stories, one that takes place in the present and one that takes place around 12 years earlier. The present story deals with a hostage situation at a police station involving pediatrician/small town medical examiner Sara Linton and her ex-husband chief of police Jeffery Tolliver. The past story involves Sara and Jeffrey when they were first dating, and a murder that takes place when they visit Jeffrey's childhood town in Alabama.

Both the past and present stories are filled with Karin Slaughter's signature themes: graphic violence, rape, sexual and physical abuse against children, dysfunctional sexual relationships, bigoted Southerners, and Sara and Jeffrey's love/hate relationship (which has grown pretty tiresome to me). Most of this is portrayed in a melodramatic, over-the-top fashion throughout the novel. Characters are briefly introduced, then terrible things happen to them shortly thereafter.

This book isn't badly written, but in the end, I just found it more unpleasant than thrilling. Part of the problem is Sara and Jeffrey -- neither of them is particularly likable, in my opinion. I also got tired of the sheer volume of dysfunctional behavior in this book, which became gratuitous after a while. The plot is also based on a wild set of coincidences, where certain characters have to be in exactly the right place at the right time to move the plot forward.

If you want to try Slaughter, I suggest reading her first book, BLINDSIGHTED, instead. That book was pretty graphic also, but I felt the characters at that point were fresher and more likable.

This book takes you on a jouney of war photography from the Crimea Pennunsula to modern times. The most striking photograph to me was actually one with no people in it. Ever read the famous poem on the Charge of the Light Brigade, one picture is the image of the Valley of Death. It looks like a peaceful barren rocky valley till you realize all the rocks are perfectly round cannon shot.

5 out of 5 stars A little bit of everything.......2007-01-11

This is a wonderful book for fans of DTWOF with little cartoons from calanders and what not. However, it is not a part of the series, so people looking for additions to the narrative of the books will be disappointed or a bit frustrated. But aside from that, this is a book full of goodies, perfect to savor a little bit at a time.

5 out of 5 stars Unusually insightful and fresh for such a long-running show.......2002-05-15

Even as a white middle class hetero, I enjoy following on an ocassional basis the progress of Ms. Bechdel's cast of characters. It's rare to find a cartoonist who has so sucessfully kept a shtick going so long without becoming hopelessly stale (although perhaps it's a bit easier for a self-consciously running commentary on society and politics wherre the material is a little more dynamic than, say, the antics of Dennis the Menace or Little Jeffrey)....

5 out of 5 stars You Must Have It.......1998-10-10

Bechdel's prose here is as smart and funny as readers of the regular strip would expect. It starts as a memoir as she describes her beginnings and progression as a cartoonist, and includes lots of early drawings and strips. The bulk of the book is made up of stuff never seen in the DTWOF volumes: strips from her calendars, strips made for other magazines or special occasions, and autobiographical work. It's great stuff, always funny, and everyone with a sense of humor should buy it right away.

5 out of 5 stars Ever wished you could meet the author of DTWOF?.......1998-05-05

This book is the next best thing.

It includes her earliest drawings (as in, from age 3), comments on what was happening in her life at the time that certain strips were drawn, what her mother thinks of certain storylines and who she was actually writing about in some of the more intimate one-shots.

Since Bechdel has stopped publishing calendars, there's a section that includes each one from 1990 to 1997. Also, there are stills from the "factory tour" screen saver, the results of an artist jam, a story timeline, and strips that were published elsewhere (for certain causes, specials for various magazines, and so on).

If you've got all of the other previous DTWOF books, this won't make your collection complete (there's a strip for teenagers about how to deal with a friend coming out that I just couldn't find in this book), but it will certainly help you get there. Warning: there is some overlap if you have all the books.

This was a neat surprise to find at Amazon.com -- I had no idea that Bechdel was working on this compliation. Definately add it to your collection!

    Book Description

For the first time ever in one volume, here are four of the most influential works of Charles Darwin, reprinted in their entirety, each illuminated by commentary from eminent scientist James D. Watson. With this exciting anthology, readers can trace the evolution of Darwin's own thought processes as he challenges conventional wisdom, unveils fundamental laws of nature, and documents the outstanding power and creativity that drives evolution. Included in this anthology are On the Origin of Species, arguably the most important scientific work of the nineteenth century; Voyage of the Beagle, a captivating travelogue richly stocked with observations that helped guide the young Darwin through his evolutionary world view; The Descent of Man, which explored the origins of humans and their history; and The Expressions of Emotions in Man and Animals, which explored the origin and nature of the mind. Darwin stated that "man with all his noble qualities . . . still bears in his bodily frame the indelible stamp of his lowly origin." With his introductory essay, Dr. Watson reveals the inexorable link between Darwin's indelible stamp and its modern representation within the DNA studies pioneered by Dr. Watson, himself. With his separate introductions for each of Darwin's books he goes further to explain how the modern considerations underlying genome research would have been impossible without Darwin, bringing a contemporary relevance to these nineteenth century masterworks.

3 out of 5 stars Good Books, not so good edition.......2007-10-02

The Indelible Stamp is a collection of good books, but I find the edition to be lacking in some respects. There are numerous typos and errors, and I have not made it yet through even the first book. Also, different printings of these texts often have many good images to accompany them that are very condusive to an understanding of the book (for example, a map of the Beagle voyage). This collection has no images except those necessary in Expression of Emotions. However, it is an affordable way to get four of Darwin's best books, and the hardcover version is well put-together. I also found Watson's commentary very useful and enriching.

4 out of 5 stars Room for evolution.......2005-09-10

This is a review of "Darwin: The Indelible Stamp," which includes four of Darwin's books, edited and with commentary by James D. Watson of DNA fame.

Unlike most works of natural history from the mid-19th-century, Darwin's books remain in print for good reasons. Aside from their historic importance, they are well-written and fascinating for all lovers of nature with curious minds. This volume's content needs no review, so I will limit my comments to the book and the editorial decisions, especially since there are numerous other editions of these books readily available.

First, the praise. To have Darwin's four most important books in one volume saves bookshelf space and probably a few dollars as well. The book seems well-made, with clean printing and relatively opaque pages that minimize the ability to see the print on the page below the one you are reading. I find the skeleton on the cover to be rather morbid and the faux-19th-century leather book image on the paper jacket to be out-of-step with Watson's efforts to argue for Darwin's continued relevance, as if any were necessary.

Watson's commentary is too brief: an eight-page forward and three-page commentaries preceding each of the four books. These are interesting pages, mainly giving historical background to the text, rather than the connections between Darwin and modern genomic research, as promised on the back cover. But it doesn't take a James Watson to have written these commentaries.

Unfortunately, it takes more than a James Watson, apparently, to provide a truly first-rate edition. He is hardly a critical editor. The book is coy about what is left in and what is left out. Amazon's editorial review says that the four books are complete--but the book itself refrains from that claim, except for "Origin of Species." So what was left out? It's very hard to say. In two minutes of comparing it to other editions, however, I found that Watson's editorial decisions (surely prompted by the publisher) mainly involve the removal of illustrations. Though the volume does have several illustrations, there are more in other editions. What else did Watson edit out? He doesn't say. My sense is that the text is essentially in tact for all four books, but I can't be sure. Watson also remains silent about what editions of these books were made and why he choose these particular ones to reprint.

To his credit, the footnotes are at the foot of the page, rather than listed as endnotes. But they remain untouched by Watson, even lacking editorial updates of page numbers. That is, when Darwin refers to his own previous work, you get the page number for the edition he used, not for the edition in your hand. More important, the volume lacks an index. While other editions have indexes of various levels of detail, this volume, probably to cut down on the page length, offers no such service and is its greatest liability.

In sum, this is a good volume is you want a collection of Darwin's greatest hits without taking up too much space or money. If you intend to return to these books a lot, you'll want an index and so a different edition. If you want Watson's commentary alone, spend a half-hour at your library.

5 out of 5 stars A Treasury of Information and Inspiration.......2007-07-02

Scott Larsen provides a great treasury of information and inspiration in his classic titled Indelible Ink. While perusing my copy of Indelible Ink, I read with great interest the books that influenced many Christian leaders. The accounts of the late Stephen F. Olford and the legendary Major W. Ian Thomas are well worth the price of the book. This book encourages me as a writer to press on into print.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but difficult going.......2007-01-11

This is a book for the intellectual crowd in my opinion. Also, many of the important thinkers who submitted essays were unknown to me. Short bios would have increased my interest level. Read them one at a time and really savor the content.

4 out of 5 stars Compulsive Readers Rejoice!.......2004-01-25

People who read books about reading share an obsession so compelling that they can't help but judge another person's "favorite books" list against their own. Or in this case, "faith-shaping books," which I assume also qualifies them for favorite status. In any event, INDELIBLE INK provides enough fodder to keep compulsive readers engaged in arguments in their heads for some time to come.

The 22 featured essayists range from the venerable J.I. Packer (whose name appears as an author of influence in more than one essay) to relative newcomer Liz Curtis Higgs. Supplementing the main essays is an appendix listing the two or three favorite books of some 130 other Christian leaders.

Both sections are filled with surprises, not the least of which is essayist Gary R. Collins's choice of a book about a caterpillar named Stripe titled HOPE FOR THE FLOWERS by Trina Paulus. (I can relate; a children's book titled LITTLE THINGS by Anne Laurin describes my marriage better than any psychologist ever could.) Another surprise is the frequency with which the names of novelists, poets and dramatists appear. The likes of Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy, Dumas, Shakespeare, T.S. Eliot, Dante and Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn (whose GULAG ARCHIPELAGO and ONE DAY IN THE LIFE OF IVAN DENISOVICH, I'm convinced, paved the way for my own conversion to Christ in the 1970s) share ink with some of the greatest theologians ever --- St. Augustine, John Calvin, Jonathan Edwards, Søren Kierkegaard and others.

My favorite essay is "My Three Best Friends ... Maybe" by Calvin Miller --- a fellow "narcolibric," a term Miller coined to describe the "print-addicted" among us. Except for his fondness for Emily Dickinson, whose poems I once deemed worthy of Good Housekeeping (seriously offending my high school literature teacher), Miller's essay, especially his observations on what I call bookaholism, mirrors my own approach to reading and integrating into my life the things I've read.

In the appendix, Elisabeth Elliot cited Amy Carmichael as her single choice --- which seems unusual, except that Carmichael wrote 40-plus books. Who knew? I doubt that even those Christians who are familiar with her and her work are aware that she was such a prolific writer. Another surprise: Fernando Ortega's choice of THE HABIT OF BEING: Letters of Flannery O'Connor. O'Connor as an author is not such a curious choice --- it's the collection of her letters that is surprising. His description forced me to add yet another title to my ever-growing list of must-reads. (An aside: A current bestselling book on heaven suggests that we'll be able to customize our afterlife experience. If so, I'm putting in a bid for a library of all the books I wanted to read before my untimely demise. I'm guessing it won't include a copy of Hubert P. Yockey's INFORMATION THEORY AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY, one of Hugh Ross's favorites.)

About three chapters into the book, I decided it would be a great idea to start keeping track of the authors to see how many times my favorites showed up in the results. I came to my senses soon enough and settled on a less formal method of accounting, something between a guess and a hunch. By the end of the book, I had decided that the front-running authors were C.S. Lewis, which was pretty much a no-brainer, and, much to my surprise and delight, Dostoyevsky. That's when I found the link to the INDELIBLE INK web site, www.indelink.com, and the page of "Top Tens": authors, titles, authors with the most titles, and contemporary authors.

My beloved Mr. Lewis topped three of the lists: number one book, with 20 mentions for MERE CHRISTIANITY; number one author, with 39 mentions; and author with the most titles, 12. What was even more telling were the runners-up in those categories. Second-place book was Oswald Chambers's MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST, cited 12 times; second place in the author category was a three-way tie between Dostoyevsky (yes!), Packer and Chambers, with 12 mentions each; and runner-up for author with the most titles was Francis Schaeffer with seven titles mentioned. Lewis's substantial lead over the runners-up lent further support to my oft-vocalized opinion that Lewis was far and away the best Christian writer of the 20th century.

What all of this has done for me, and likely will do for other hopelessly narcolibric readers, is add yet more names and titles to an ever-expanding "To Read" list. But I'm fine with that; the high quality of INDELIBLE INK's essays assures me that the books I've added to my list are well worth reading.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting but light.......2003-11-11

This is a book of writers' readings. Twenty-two names familiar on the Christian speaking and writing circuit tip their hats to the authors that shaped their faith, including essays from Chuck Colson, Dallas Willard, J.I. Packer, Luis Palau, John Stott, Josh McDowell and Phil Johnson.

The strength of the book was in its inception: what a creative idea! Larsen has tickled the bibliomania of chronic readers who pause at every turn-of-phrase to muse about its origin. If you're one who says, "Hmm, I wonder if he's getting this from Mere Christianity," here's your chance to find out (and yes, in fact, nearly everyone has apparently been influenced by C.S. Lewis). We find out that the poetic Calvin Miller reads Shakespeare (and 100 books a year), that Michael Card liked the manly Monte Cristo, and that J.I. Packer was comfortable enough with Calvin to write the long-gone theologian personal letters. It also feeds our natural obsession with the fairly accessible world of Christian stardom. For those who keep a working biography of significant, public mentors, this is a tour of their own self-reflections. Furthermore, there's a catalogue of another 130 Christian authors', speakers', and ministers' paragraph-long reviews in the back.

The only nuisance of the book is that Larsen has requested reviews of non-professional reviewers. It's less than compelling to hear that Colson gives "high marks" to Tolstoy. But if we embrace this collection of essays as a profile of influences rather than a thoroughly informative critique of the sources, the book fulfills its purpose. Once you've done that, the few letters within are truly well-crafted writings which stand out as fun surprises in an already interesting book.

Perhaps the best review comes from Jill Briscoes' recommendation at the close of her contribution which can appropriately serve as a description of the whole of Indelible Ink; "Happy reading."

5 out of 5 stars Grand slam home run.......2003-06-20

General editor Scott Larsen and publisher WaterBrook have hit a grand slam home run with this highly readable, repeatedly rewarding volume. Larsen's Introduction is a brilliant essay on the importance of books. In turn, each of the 22 contributors invites the reader into his or her private study, then one by one talks about the two or three books that have made the most profound impact on their lives through the years. Several times, upon finishing a chapter, I found myself thinking, "That essay alone was worth the price of this book." Note to Larsen and WaterBrook: More volumes like this, please! Highly recommended.

    Book Description

The love story (as well as the story of love lost, obsessed over, or longed for) gets a complete and thrilling renovation at the hands of the most virtuosic literary stylist to appear in the British Isles since Jeanette Winterson. A. L. Kennedy’s men and women huddle in foreign hotel rooms, immobilized by travel-sickness and betrayal. They plan seductions on the line at a cheese shop. They’re undone by a passing embrace in the office men’s room. Their passion is so urgent and imperious that it invades the stories they tell their children.

By turns chaste and ferociously sexy, funny and unbearably sad, every story in Indelible Acts is a testament to the lengths to which desire drives us. And all are marked by Kennedy’s wisdom and humanity, and language that captures the briefest tremor of the infatuated heart.

2 out of 5 stars Plotless, but excellent writing.......2006-07-07

I picked this up on the recommendation of a travel guide book, as an example of good writing by a Scottish author. The writing is very good, but the Scottish nature of these stories is near to non-existent. What connects these stories together is their theme of adultery, a theme that is fairly common to mainstream literature these days (I've an aunt-in-law who used to complain that it was a criteria for Oprah's Book Club), but one that I had heretofore avoided in my own reading diet. Unfortunately, the saliciousness of these short stories was fairly mild, and while I found Kennedy's writing quite admirably, at the end of each story I found myself saying, "So what," a common complaint I have with modern short stories, which tend to be heavy in style and character and light in plot or substance. I did end up reading every story, so that's something of a recommendation, in the sense that if plot isn't necessary for you, you might find this book quite worthwhile.

4 out of 5 stars Lack of Love Proves to be Indelible.......2005-01-28

A.L. Kennedy, a prized Scottish fiction writer, brings us from across the pond, "Indelible Acts," a short-story collection filled with satisfying tales - her first to be published in the States. The unnamed narrator in "Not Anything to Do with Love" summons up the theme of the slim book with her notion of an ex-boyfriend, "There would be tenderness, but the kind you only feel when there's a bruise."

Kennedy explores what individuals will do when love is absent - adultery runs prominently as an inadequate fix. Thankfully, humor is sporadically present within the pages of heartache, thus keeping the pieces from becoming a veritable mine of depressive rants. Inner dialog also propels the stories with ease; it allows the reader to be aware of the painful disparity between outer and inner reality.

In "A Little like Light," John Edward feels stuck in a dismal marriage and an unrewarding job as a school janitor. He thinks of himself as an actor playing out a role for both his family and work. The only moments of solace he has are his thoughts: "The best love is a little like light. It is unremitting, cannot fail to find you, to take the shortest, surest way, as if that were marked out as part of your nature, the line where you and love are made to meet." The school's new teacher, Elizabeth Harrison, does find Edward, but he does nothing to pursue the new relationship despite his interest or take action to repair his failing marriage.

Edward, like Kennedy's other characters, is unable to make decisions that could improve life and love. However, hope for change does brim in "How to Find Your Way in Woods." Sarah invites her ex-boyfriend David for a holiday trip, but regrets the invitation once he arrives. Later she is able to walk away from him and says, "We didn't work, David."

      Book Description

Indelible Shadows investigates questions raised by films about the Holocaust. How does one make a movie that is both morally just and marketable? Film scholar Annette Insdorf provides sensitive readings of individual films and analyzes theoretical issues such as the "truth claims" of the cinematic medium. The third edition of Indelible Shadows includes five new chapters that cover recent trends, as well as rediscoveries of motion pictures made during and just after World War II. It addresses the treatment of rescuers, as in Schindler's List; the controversial use of humor, as in Life is Beautiful; the distorted image of survivors, and the growing genre of documentaries that return to the scene of the crime or rescue. The annotated filmography offers capsule summaries and information about another hundred Holocaust films from around the world, making this edition the most comprehensive and up to date discussion of films about the Holocaust, and an invaluable resource for film programmers and educators. Annette Insdorf is Director of Undergraduate Film Studies at Columbia University, and a Professor in the Graduate Film Division of the School of the Arts. She is the author of Double Lives, Second Chances: The Cinema of Krzysztof Kielowski (Hyperion, 1999) and Francois Truffaut (Cambridge, 1995). She served as a jury member at the Berlin Film Festival and the Locarno Film Festival, and is the panel moderator at the Telluride Film Festival. Insdorf co-hosts (with Roger Ebert) Cannes Film Festival coverage for BRAVo/IFC.
