    Book Description

As awareness of Asperger Syndrome (AS) grows, it becomes increasingly important that all professionals are familiar with and understand the condition. However, for teachers it is difficult to quickly access the necessary details for working with AS children. This book bridges this gap and is the ideal foundation for learning about AS and how to get the best from an AS child. Providing a summary of the syndrome and covering all the key issues that concern teachers (e.g. social skills, homework, playground behavior), Matt Winter offers tips and practical ideas that are invaluable for anyone working within a school environment.

I felt it had some very good ideas. It's a short read and to the point.

5 out of 5 stars Asperger Syndrome What Teachers Need To Know.......2007-09-14

I have struggled since Kindergarten to find a book that teachers at my son's school would actually read and this is it. I bought it after printing pages from the internet for his teacher so that she would understand his needs better. He is mainstreamed but has difficulty with authority. She has done wonders in just the first month of school. She is willing to learn and accepted the book without hesitation and has actually shared it with other teachers and duties in the school. The book is well written - very easy read and doesn't take up the precious time of teachers, it is informative and well explained. I highly recommend this book to anyone even supporting staff at schools especially elementary schools.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for teachers!!.......2007-08-26

I was very impressed with the straight forward and direct approach of this book. I read this book in less than an hour and picked up some good tips. Before I found this book, I was trying to search the internet for info to print off for his teacher. I was having a hard time finding a site that described AS, it's symptoms, what to expect, and how to help. This book covers it all, plus has tips of things to add to the IEP. Since no one in our school district has ever dealt with AS before, this book will be a big help. I bought a copy for my son's teacher, and am trying to get the school to buy copies of their own.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE THIS BOOK.......2007-08-21

I love this book because it's short enough that the teachers will actually read it, and practical enough that they will actually use it. We have given a copy of the book to each of my son's teachers every year - it is a critical part of laying the foundation for good communication for the school year, and for helping the teachers see and understand his behavior in the right context. I would highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars The first step in educating educators.......2007-08-14

I'm getting my son's teachers and support team - who are convinced they've seen it all - ready for next year. This book is our first step. It is succinct, jargon-free and maintains a positive, constructive attitude throughout.

It has value to any professional educator with any interest in developing his/her skills and educational techniques with ALL students, not just the Asperger's/ASD demographic. It gives the basics and hits the high points, as well as referencing many resources to search out more information, strategies, techniques and tools.

For parents, either entering the fray for the first time or continuing the journey to maximizing our amazing kids, it is invaluable. A tool to use when setting priorities and get the already eager and motivated educators started. A weapon to use to breech the barriers of ignorance, to break through the walls of preconceptions and to motivate resistant teachers or administrators.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not a lot of drama, but satisfying.......2007-09-01

This is the third Maron book for me, and although it was not pulsating with tension, it was enjoyable and satisfactory. The mystery concerning the dead man in the truck was a good foil for the other mystery of a dead woman in a car. It added local color and gave a sense of business as usual instead of having everything depend upon the cleverness of one character. Jonna was well-drawn and it is clear to me why the marriage failed. She was a conscientious worker, a loyal daughter, and a good mother. Her taste was traditional and her compulsion for neatness did not correspond with Deborah's, but she was not a vixen. I would have preferred that the author explore Dwight's feelings more deeply, and the child's reactions were stilted. We shall see what develops when they are all back home again.

4 out of 5 stars A treat for the true Knott fan.......2007-07-11

This installment in the Deborah Knott mysteries is not the first book you will want to read in the collection. Your full enjoyment of the story relies on your familiarity with past characters and situations. But, for long-time readers, and lovers of the series, it is a true treat. So often authors of continuous series of mystery novels don't let their characters grow. Not the case with Maron. I have thoroughly enjoyed following Judge Knott's live and loves, as well as the cases she tidies up along the way. But Deborah is changing. The author needed to more fully develop her new role as wife. Also Dwight was just a footnote in previous books (other than Rituals of the Season). We needed to understand more about Dwight, and it will be a joy to see him take a more active role in future books.

As other reviewers have noted, the plots of these books are not always the focus or the strength of these stories' appeal - it's the characters and the settings. This is also true of this installment. But the central plot involving Dwight's ex-wife is stronger than many in previous stories.

This is a great summer read, especially if you are a fan of the series. I put the new Stephanie Plum book down after 50 pages because I was bored with the same old stuff and decided to read this one! I am glad I did.

5 out of 5 stars An Engrossing Mystery Minus the Filth.......2007-05-13

Captivating with an intricate plot. A whodunit page-turner with an unsuspecting twist. This author does not need "sex" to sell this book: the mark of a rare, accomplished storyteller.

    4 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars - It's like visiting family.......2007-05-07

First Sentence: "The call came through to the Colleton County Sheriff's Department just after sunset on a chilly Thursday evening in mid-January."

Judge Deborah Knott's new husband, Sheriff's Deputy Dwight Bryant, has a murder to solve. Troublemaker J.D. Rouse has been fatally shot while driving his truck. But more important to Dwight is that his ex-wife is missing and, shortly thereafter, his son, Cal, as well.

I rather liked that this was more Dwight's story than Deborah's. It was a nice change. It is definitely the characters that make this story, and this series, work. There's always that feeling you've gone to visit a good friend and her entire family. That said, there were two plots to this story. The first, which was almost a secondary plot, seemed there to involve Deborah in the story and it was she who solved the case in the end. The second, involving Dwight and his son, was the more interesting, emotional and suspenseful story and the one that really kept me involved in the book. It may not have been a "wow" book, but it was a reliably good read. There's nothing wrong with that.

3 out of 5 stars come on in, ya'll, and set a spell.......2006-11-26

All of the Judge Deborah Knott books are wonderful, so if this one is a bit less wonderful than average, small harm. Beginning a month after the action in Rituals of the Season (in which Deborah and the uneuphoniously named Dwight Bryant are wed), this novel is set mostly in Virginia, home of Dwight's son and ex-wife, Jonna. We can understand Maron's need to find additional settings for the series, lest Cotton Grove and environs become the Cabot Cove of the South, but I miss the NC atmosphere and ambience. In Shaysville, VA, however, Maron has created another Southern microcosm about which she can be lovingly caustic.

As with all of the novels in this series, the dialogue is word-perfect across class and gender lines. Listening to these people talk is a pure pleasure. The characters are vivid, never toppling over the bounds of credulity; we can enjoy despising the self-absorbed Southern lady and the obsessed collector of Civil War-era tat.

No, there's not much of a plot, but the shock value of Cal (Dwight's 8-year-old son) losing his mother and then being kidnapped is a fair substitute for one. The strength of Maron's series is that she creates a world in which we are delighted to dwell for a brief spell.

It's too brief, as always, but we can hope for more soon.

PS If anyone figures out the chapter headings, please do a post. Taken from the classics (Homer, Sophocles, various pre- and post-Socratic Greek philosophers, Ovid,) Shakespeare, Flaubert (?!?), Tennyson, and a 1918 book about weather (obviously, many are about the weather, re the title,) the tags presumably make sense to Maron, but I found them to be largely an exercise in the production of non-sequiturs - a distraction.

There are many ways to say I love you to a child, and no way is sweeter than with a kiss. Every mother knows small hands, a plump tummy, tiny fingers, and wiggling toes all beg to be kissed time and time again.

Margaret Anastas's loving rhyme and Susan Winter's gentle illustrations of animal mamas and their adorable babies will make this a family favorite.

      5 out of 5 stars Can't miss a kiss..........2007-01-26

We have been reading this since my daughter was 10 months old... at 33 months it is still one of her favorites. It doesn't matter who reads it, they have to kiss and heaven forbid you miss, knees, hands, arms, belly, belly button... Now that she is bigger we read it once and kiss her and the second time she kisses us! Great for lots of bed time kisses!

The illustrations are very cute too.

4 out of 5 stars Great bedtime book.......2007-01-03

My 2 year old daughter loves loves loves this book. It is a lot of fun to read at bedtime. Beautiful illustrations. We've gotten it as presents for all our friends with babies.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for a Good Snuggle .......2006-06-18

It is time to go to bed, but first, you need something special: Mommy's kisses. Good mommies of all species kiss their little ones in all the places they need kissed. Toes, fingers, noses, and tummies, too. They all need kissed, just like you.

With loving, gentle finesse, Anastas and Winter share the promise of the unconditional love a mommy has for her small child. Soft illustrations show animal mothers kissing their babies in delightful ways.

In addition to being a good for bedtime, this book offers a wonderful opportunity for parent-child interaction. The child can be asked to name the animals, find the body parts, and more. But most of all, this is a perfect book to read during a good, old-fashioned snuggle.

The pictures of the baby animals being kissed by their Mothers is very sweet. I ordered 2 more of these books last month through Amazon, to give to my next 2 Grand children that are soon to be here. I highly recommend for lovers of animals and babies.

I am so happy I have this book, it brought tears to my eyes as I have been reading it. I have a daughter who is now almost 7 years of age, who has special needs. I have been through so much with Doctor's and testing, and sometimes forget about what else is going on in life. I think anyone who's going through a challenge with their child being a little different from the rest, should own a copy of this book. It's sense that should be common, for both parents and doctor's.

Being the mother of 4, with 3 who are absolutely normal, I feel even more blessed with having 1 child who is different, and this book really confirms I'm not alone in thinking that way. Thank you Judy, for taking the time to write this book. I hope every parent going through these sorts of challenges, is able to read this book!

      Book Description

Carefully combing his ears and tail and wearing his finest red felt boots, a furry young faery named Sneezle prepares for the Midwinter festival in Old Oak Wood -- the oldest faery court in the British Isles. All the denizens of the wood have gathered for this grand winter holiday...but this year something is strangely wrong. By now the forest should be blanketed with snow, but the air remains warm, the leaves have not fallen, and branches remain laden with autumn's fruit. Somehow, the cycle of nature has been halted, and even the faery king, Oberon, cannot fathom why winter has not arrived. From this mystery will come a great adventure, one in which young Sneezle and his best friend, Twig, will confront menacing goblins and an evil sorcerer.

By turns charming, menacing, and hilarious, The Winter Child follows Sneezle and Twig as they bravely ferret out the terrible truth behind Winter's absence and witness a dramatic duel of sorcerers in which the future of the faery kingdom hangs in the balance. In this marvelous collaboration between renowned doll maker Wendy Froud and award-winning writer Terri Windling, the entrancing story twists and turns its way through the magical beauty and ominous shadows of the faeries' world. Art-directed by Brian Froud, beloved creator of such classics as Good Faeries/Bad Faeries, the book's spectacular photographs capture Sneezle, Twig, King Oberon and Queen Titania, the sorcerer Malagan, the Royal Council of Sorcerers, and the faeries of Old Oak Wood, all in such vivid detail that they seem to come alive...as indeed, perhaps, they are.

Following the success of Wendy Froud and Terri Windling's first Sneezle adventure, A Midsummer Night's Faery Tale, this new volume opens the magical window of enchantment once more with an extraordinary combination of story and art. A mythic tale of nature humbled by whim and ambition -- and of good and simple souls triumphant -- The Winter Child will be a classic among lovers of fairy tales, fantasy literature, and all things Froudian.

      5 out of 5 stars Must have.......2007-08-06

Like all Froud books this one is incredible. This isn't just for children. People of all ages will enjoy it. Especially if you are a Froud fan. The pictures are beautiful and the story is really nice. This is must have for all children and Froudians

      5 out of 5 stars A magical Journey.......2006-08-29

On the Midwinters Eve the faeries are having their annual celebration to welcome winter. But something is a miss and they all know it..where is winter? Why are there still flowers and fruit on the trees? Where has lady winter gone?
This book is illustrated with beautiful faerie figures in the traditional Froud family fashion. The story is a little familiar of many fantasy stories, and yet unique and steeped in lore.
Almost looking as a young childrens book at first this book is pretty and soft but the story is almost that of a short chapter books. The story is long enough and yet simple enough to be enjoyed by all. This book is great for children and adults alike

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Book by Wendy Froud!.......2002-09-21

Wendy Froud is the wife of Artist Bryan Froud ( Good Fairies, Bad Fairies). She is a great artist and this book reflects her abilities, the books has pictures of the dolls she created for the story. The pictures say a thousand words. If you are a doll maker, you will greatly enjoy this book. The story is good but the pictures are better. It has different kind of trolls, fairies and wizards. If you love fantasy you will love the book.

      5 out of 5 stars Magical tale.......2001-12-31

This is an extremely beautiful book. With Wendy Froud's doll making skills and Terri Windling's magical story weaving, teamed up with Brian Froud well, it sounds too good to be true. This follow up to "A Midsummer Night's Faery Tale" did not disappoint.

Sneezle, our beloved hero from the first book, is again teamed up with his friend Twig for a quest to find out why Winter has not yet reached their forest. Again they encounter many characters, in which Wendy's dolls never fail to amaze me. She is so incredibly gifted. I would like to show this book to anyone who does not appreciate winter as a season, because while it's not the "moral" of the story...it takes a look at winter as being the season for rest so that everything can be reborn in the spring. It tells a magnificent tale.

Not only is it a wonderful book to read and enjoy, but it's a treasure to put up on the shelf or coffee table for looking at again and again.

5 out of 5 stars It just gets better!.......2001-10-24

Terri, Wendy, and Brian have done it again! Teaming up again to send Sneezle, the beloved hero of "A Midsummer Night's Faery Tale," on another adventure, the Frouds and Windling masterfully create a mythical world that defies the pages the story is written on. Using photographs of dolls created by Wendy Froud in settings built in the Froud's garden studio, the characters literally step from the pages. Fresh and exciting, Windling's writing brings new life to old folklore, bringing the faeries and goblins of Dartmoor out of their hiding places, at least for a little while, for us to see. A treasure to keep, with plenty to share, this is a wonderful read for the self and the wee ones!

      5 out of 5 stars a beautiful book.......2006-10-30

This was a baby shower gift. I started ready this to my son when he was 4 months old. He loved it and so do I! He's 1 1/2 now and pulls it down off his shelf to flip through on his own and brings it to me to read to him over and over again. The illustrations are beatiful and the loving message will bring tears to your eyes.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, Heartwarming Family Choice.......2006-02-22

This is a fabulous book, simple and sweet and reassuring to little ones everywhere. My four year old wants to hear it over and over and my six year old, who is just starting to learn to read on his own, finds the simple text inviting and "reads" the book to me. They both end each evening now by offering to give me "the best hug of all". Very sweet. Beautifully illustrated. I would highly recommend this to parents and kids alike.

A HUG FOR YOU is a delightfully charming picture book to read aloud to young children. Simple text and beautiful illustrations by Susan Winter, one of my favorite illustrators, share the many types of hugs that can be shared. There are hugs when you're happy, hugs when you're sad, hugs between friends, and hugs between a mother and her child. I loved this book.

This is an adventure story for the little rabbit Hopper and his mother. Hopper likes to play with his friend Nick, who is also a little rabbit. It is hard for Hopper to live every day because he has to look for food in the cold snow while always being scared of being attacked by predators. He is taught many things from is mother and is constantly reminded of how to live day to day. It's a great story involving the furriest and cutest animals.
