Book Description

Combining two disciplines—posing and wedding portraiture—this professional resource helps photographers create flattering poses to build the best possible portraits and highest possible sales. Photographers are taught how to position the head, shoulders, torso, arms, hands, legs, and feet to correct figure flaws, make a client feel relaxed, and evoke a dynamic image that tells a story or defines a relationship. The challenges of shooting on location are addressed with tips for adjusting poses in any situation. A discussion of body language and how small adjustments can change an entire mood provides photographers with the ability to help their clients convey a variety of desired messages, whether elegant, sexy, or playful. Standing, seated, and floor poses are covered along with specific techniques for photographing brides, grooms, and wedding parties.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Very Disorganized!.......2007-07-12

Sample pictures do not have a clear description of which poses are good or bad. You have to read text which is usually in different pages to determine the expalantion of the poses.

Writer is not clear in his explanations and is hard to follow.

I will not buy any other books by this author.

1 out of 5 stars Not at all what I had hoped.........2007-03-27

This book did not have the creative and interesting posing techniques I had hoped for. Outdated is the best word I can think of to describe this book.

1 out of 5 stars Utterly disappointing, do not buy this book!.......2007-03-11

I cant begin to describe how utterly useless this book is. The title suggested a book that would provide eduction and insight to posing for portrait and wedding photography: the reality is so far from the truth you wouldnt believe!

The poses and photos shown are amatuer, pathetic and laughable... at best. I constantly had to show my girlfriend the photos and commentary and we would collapse into fits of laughter....in fact, that might be the one positive comment I can make: it's a good laugh!

The photos used are very old (lots of 1980's glam fashion here) and the models are stiff and ill at ease. They look more like firing squad victums than examples of portrait and wedding subjects. The poses are over-done, look fake and staged to a painful degree.

To top it off, there is little teaching or recognisable educational structure to this book. I read it (a painful process) from start to finish and felt I learnt nothing. Nada, zip, zero. What a waste of time and money.

Do yourself a big favour and DO NOT buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Best one I have read .......2007-02-16

My model (daughter) and I use this book as our posing bible.
It has improved the appearance of our photos one hundred percent.
By reading the book, we now have the ability to spot "bad" poses and to work out better ones.
I never realized there was so much to hand, feet and head position that went into making THE photo you are looking for.
If you only purchase one book to help you grow as a portrait photographer, this is the one.
Don't expect pretty people in pretty poses, this is a how to book that builds from one pose to next.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2006-11-09

This book was just what I was looking for! All of the tips and hints throughout the book have made me a more conscious photographer. The art in the book shows what you should and shoud not do while posing clients. It's an advantage to see the good and the bad right next to each other to advance personal critques.

Book Description

Photographers learn from a master the impact and drama that can be created through the precise creation of low key portraits-portraits in which the tonal range is primarily dark. While the low key technique lends a classic, artistic, subdued mood to images that may seem relaxed and effortless, creating this style presents significant challenges for the photographer, all of which are addressed in this book. Guidelines for selecting the best lighting equipment and light modifiers for efficiently creating low key portraits are detailed, as are the most effective techniques for measuring the light in the scene for correct exposure. Photographers of all levels learn to consider the impact of creating images in a controlled key.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great beginner's guide.......2007-05-28

The text is of great quality. Content is superb. It's a good guide for beginners who would like to achieve remarkable low key photos. It provides details on how to set up background, what clients need to wear, and lastly lighting setup. I have read other photography books and by far this is one that I can easily understand and apply. Overall I would highly recommend this to others.

4 out of 5 stars Good information, but dated style.......2007-05-01

This guide is a well-illustrated look at tried and true practices of portrait photography. That being said, the photos themselves seemed dated and almost Sears-portrait-esque. They are technically sound but do not push the stylistic envelope.

If you're looking for a good explanation of standard practices, this will fit your bill.

I personally was looking for something more along the lines of Lighting and the Dramatic Portrait: The Art of Celebrity and Editorial Photography, but with in-depth explanation of techniques instead of just examples. That book is highly recommended for more creative examples of portrait lighting.

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2007-04-10

Excellent book for every photographer who wants to use white background and lighting techniques.

3 out of 5 stars Good Book, but ..........2007-01-11

It is hard to find good book about learning photography. All of them are same and you can get general information about particular subject.
In this book you will see a lot of pictures, samples and advices like: make a good harmony, keep contrast ... But there are few information about how to make good photos.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Informative.......2006-12-30

Well written, informative and an fun to read, this is one of the better portraiture books on the market. Although aimed at the photographer who understands F stops and lighting (I don't... yet), there was still more than enough information to get my running for my camera. This is a book I look forward to growing into. :)

Definitely one on my "must have" list.

5 out of 5 stars Aw-Ah...FINALLY!.......2005-07-01

This book gets a high recommendation from me. You will read this book and often say to yourself, "aw-ah". Lighting Techniques for High Key Portrait Photography is for those of you who are just starting out and those of you who have been at it a while and just can't quite achieve the results you are looking for. It's easy to read, easy to understand, offers great diagrams and wonderful examples. It will definitely help you take the guess work out of studio photography...aw-ah!!

5 out of 5 stars Mystery Revealed.......2004-09-22

As a proven do-it-yourselfer, I can recommend reading this material for understanding light ratios used in high key lighting. Over the years I stumbled with this and never figured it out on my own. I managed to achieve a style by accident but I never did find the right combination for glowing white portrait lighting. Now I have read just some of the first portion of this book and find it so very worth my money to have this explained to me I look forward to reading the rest and testing more.

I have learned portrait technique from some great professional photographers and I never uncovered this info until reading this book. My equipment is professional, my comfort with my skill level is moderate/intermediate but I am producing professional looking work with knowledge like this. Thanks to Norman.

Book Description

From its earliest days, photography could not escape the pictorial traditions that had gone before it. This book, the first comprehensive study of Pictorialism in Europe, analyses the remarkable diversity of approaches taken by photographers across the continent whose practice was infused with contemporary debate about photography's relationship to art. Written by an international team of art and photography historians, Impressionist Camera examines the ways in which practitioners realized their pictorial vision, from the re-creation of Academic painting in photography to the use of soft focus to lend images an impressionistic quality. Also explored are the cross-currents with photography in America - where Pictorialism went on to flourish - including the seminal work of Alfred Stieglitz.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Captures the creations and sentiments of the era........2006-09-24

Pictorial photography flourished at the turn of the 20th century and crossed genres, styles and international borders as it produced celebrated artists and fostered artistic change. Here to celebrate these changes is Impressionist Camera: Pictorial Photography in Europe, 188-1918, a narrowed focus on European community photography approaches. Selections consider how photographers created unique works and visions, how they influenced on another, and how they contributed to the fusion and symbolism of pictorial photography as a genre. This book represents the first comprehensive country-by-country examination on the topic and draws together contributions by an international team of art and photography scholars and historians. Sepia and black and white photos throughout capture the creations and sentiments of the era.

"An alternative universe that ... could easily be heaven ... absurdly elegant ... A beautiful catalogue ... Their creations bristle with audacity, kitschy deadpanning, boldly playful sexiness, and ... a tinge of mystery ... Exquisite."

4 out of 5 stars Pierre et Gilles forever.......2004-12-18

This book is an excellent presentation of Pierre et Gilles work, esp as a first purchase of their masterworks. It has a great introduction that explains their collaboration which will be of much interest, exp to modern graphic artists who want to do similr work. The prints are gorgeous, and there is a nice variety of work, without including their more "hardcore" pieces to scare off people from appreciatin their work.

5 out of 5 stars The genius of Camp.......2002-01-27

Pierre et Gilles are exquisite interpreters of campy glamour.Their sexy saints, their innocently looking yet sizzyingly sexy boys and girls, are like a sumptous glittering candy. I've savoured their work.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Introduction.................2000-12-07

This beautiful produced book , accompanying a major exhibition at the new Museum of Contemporary Art, in New York, is a wonderful introduction for anyone to Pierre & Gilles beautiful & unique combination of photography and painting. I have been a fan of Pierre & Gilles for many years, and have enjoyed all of the wonderful collection of books published about them over the years, but this book was indeed welcomed because it has a lot of their new unpublished photographic paintings. Art critic & curator, Dan Cameron, gives a great overview & history of Pierre & Gille's photographic paintings as well as a complete explanation of all of the images presented in this book. It's very insightful and I learned a lot more than I knew before.

So if you are a true fan of Pierre & Gilles work you definitely should have this beautiful book in your collection, or if their work is new to you this is one of the best introductions to their talented and very unique photography.

5 out of 5 stars An Increidible Look into the eyes of Pierre Et Gilles.......2000-12-04

These two artist are some of the most avantgard and ambicouis photographers of our time. With their representations of saints and their homoerotic pieces they have something for jsut about anybody. I recommmend this book to anyone who is looking to add a very different type of art to their home library!

    Book Description

This comprehensive resource provides insight into the strategies needed to devise and implement creative, flattering poses for children of all age groups, from newborns through preteens. Posing options are organized around the logical age groupings of babies, toddlers, children, and groups. An investigation of the impact of the color, texture, and shape of the posing prop on the image is included, as are ways to effectively use the parent as a prop for babies who are too young to support a pose. Strategies for working with on-the-go clients are detailed, such as having attention-getting playthings on hand that engage subjects, add dimension to the portrait, and ensure a better-posed image. Interactive games that capture and hold the attention of toddlers are described, and ideas for earning the trust of this subject group are also covered. Photographers will benefit from advice for working through tantrums, tears, and willful independence—skills that, while not in the realm of posing education, have a positive impact on the photographer's ability to captivate the desired pose.

5 out of 5 stars A True Likeness: The Black South of Richard S. Roberts.......2001-03-05

This book was a visual journey into the lives of early 20th century black america. Many of the pictures could be termed as "dignified photo essays" of life in the black community. You feel as though you are right there behind the lenses of these photo's while they're being taken. They almost have an "ethereal beauty" about them. In these photo's you can see the dignity of a race of people who were considered low class at the time of the photographs, but in the way they are portrayed you feel like you're in the presence of royalty. "A visual treat for the eye's" is the best way to describe this book . It is also well worth reading as you enjoy the beautiful photography! I would highly recommended this book to african americans and those who enjoy a look into the past!

      Book Description

Described by one critic as "embarrassingly intimate," Cindy Sherman's Centerfolds, a series of twelve 2 x 4 foot images shot in 1981 for an Artforum commission, take the horizontal centerfold as their physical and conceptual framework. Though the images were never run in the magazine--the editor was concerned that they would be misunderstood--they remain some of the most affecting of Sherman's constructed pictures. In them, Sherman's vaguely adolescent female characters fill up the frame with an ambiguous, uncomfortably close presence, their plaid kilts, wet t-shirts, matted hair, disheveled nightgowns, and pretty gingham dresses keeping them in your face but unavailable, emotionally suggestive but ambivalently distanced. This handsome, compact volume, the first to include all twelve of the Centerfold images, is run through with an informative, involved text by Lisa Phillips, Head Curator of the New Museum and a long-time supporter of Sherman's work.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Later Regular Edition More Informative & Better Suited To Photos Than Earlier Limited Edition.......2006-05-15

Caveat emptor: Two books dated 2003 have the title "Cindy Sherman Centerfolds." Both contain 12 landscape-orientation self-portraits of the photographer made up and dressed up as adolescent girls that were originally shot in 1981. But the books' designs and contents are different.

The first one was produced as a limited edition of 1850 which was apparently recalled. It has an incorrect ISBN of 0970909039*, is 29.5cm wide and 15cm high, has a light blue cloth cover, is 44 pages in length, was designed by "Honest, NYC," and was printed in Iceland. The photos are presented full-bleed on the right-hand pages, with blank pages facing them. An essay by Lisa Phillips in a rather large font is interspersed among the photographs. The captions (untitled #92, #87, #85, #88, #86, #89, #95, #93, #94, #90, #96, and #91a) are at the end. The dust jacket features orangish Untitled #93 with Sherman as a "blond with red rimmed eyes and matted hair tucked under rumpled black sheets" (per the essay).

The later regular edition (ISBN 0970909020) is 22cm wide by 25cm high, has a black cloth cover, is 50 pages in length, was designed by "Stella Bugbee, Giampietro + Smith," and was printed in Germany. In this book the Phillips essay is found in normal-size font on pages 5-7. The twelve photographs (untitled #92, #87, #91, #85, #88, #95, #89, #86, #93, #94, #90, and #96) follow on two-page spreads with white around them. Pages 32-47 have 1981-1982 essays by Peter Schjeldahl, Roberta Smith, and Andy Grundberg. The dust jacket has a detail of bluish Untitled #92 with Sherman in a tartan skirt and white blouse.

Which is better? If you are a book collector, you'll want the wide-format limited edition due to its rarity and "artistic" presentation. But those interested in Sherman's art are better served by the regular edition for several reasons. For one, it has more text than the limited edition. For another, the presence of the book's gutter in each photo in the regular edition gives a more "centerfold-like" feeling (although I suppose fold-out photos would have been even more effective). Finally, when I compared the photos in the two editions, the ones in the limited edition were slightly cropped, the worst example being Untitled #86 on page 17 in which you cannot see Sherman's eyes at the far right.

If you're unsure which edition a bookseller has for sale, use the "Contact This Seller" feature in the "Used & New" section of Amazon.com!

      * That ISBN belongs to "Laurie Simmons Photographs 1978/79."

5 out of 5 stars A Long Wait, But Well Worth It.......2006-03-07

Although the "Centerfolds" were shot back in the 1980's it took until now for them to be all collected in a book collection. They are some of Cindy Sherman's best work and they are presented beautifully in this very wide shaped book. The book was hard to get a hold of as it was specially produced by an art gallery, but as a fan it is a great addition to the "Complete Film Stills" book. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars An Early Look at Cindy Sherman's Art.......2005-05-25

Cindy Sherman is now an established household art figure, a photographer who spends her life costuming herself and arranging her settings to recreate or reinterpret other people both famous in art history and in other arenas. These works are no longer shocking or startling, but the twelve 'Centerfolds' in this fine little book show her at an early stage in a career that has since burgeoned.

As far as the Centerfolds themselves, each is a self portrait in different but drab dress and moods. While the concept of viewing the standard plain woman in the guise of what is usually associated as a Playboy etc venture of sizzling sensuality is a solid idea, the photographs themselves tend toward a sameness that makes them less interesting than her current work.

Still, this was a pioneering commission by Artforum magazine that never made it to print and we are fortunate to see the images that found no home until the museums sought them out due to her growing fame. It is another moment in history that bears observing. Grady Harp, May 05
