Commitment, Character, Competence.......2007-07-31
The advice in this book extends beyond the professional world and echoes in everyday life. This makes sense; we don't live double-lives, and there exists no magic, secret formula for success in business, medicine, or raising kids. It comes down to basic human virtues.
Commitment. Character. Competence. These attributes fuel the engines of success in life.
It boggles the mind how many books or programs offer axiomatic platitudes such as "it's not what you know but who you know" or "success is what makes you happy, so be true to yourself."
None such wasteful advice finds its way into this book. Rather, Dr. Irwin points out the objective, observable standards that exist in life, and our need to continually evaluate ourselves and measure our choices against those standards.
As the book says; it's simple, but it isn't easy. I highly recommend this book.
Run with the Bulls Without Getting Trampled.......2007-07-08
Tim Irwin's book, "Run with the Bulls," is by far the most insightful business book I have read this year. It causes you to take a look beneath the surface and determine how you can lead a life of significance and find meaning in your work. There are very few business books that take you to this level of personal reflection. "Run with the Bulls" is one of them.
run with the bulls.......2007-04-19
"Run with the Bulls" offers a practical approach to finding meaning and fulfillment in our careers. Tim Irwin uses straightforward language to express complex ideas. He has an engaging way with personal anecdotes that serve both to clarify his themes and share aspects of his family life. One of the book's many pleasures is its frequent use of cultural references. Dr Irwin's interests range from "New Yorker" cartoons to TS Eliot to popular movies like "Groundhog Day." His experience as a psychologist has given him unique insight into the complex issues that so often derail our attempts to pursue excellence.
If you are running your career you need this book.......2007-03-08
The best complete compilation and illustration of the keys to a great life and career.
Great Stories with a Powerful Message.......2007-01-31
"Run with the Bulls" is hard book to put down. I savored each chapter. The author tells real life stories as the foundation for a powerful message on principles of leadership. After reading the book I passed it on to my 18 year-old son who read it in a week. I wish I had known the principles which Irwin sets forth so clearly when I began my career! The stampeding bulls will trample the energy and enthusiasm out of many young professionals. I ordered six copies for my family members to help them avoid that fate.

On July 26, 1945, the heavy cruiser Indianapolis steamed into port at the Pacific island of Tinian, carrying a cargo that would end World War II: the uranium that would be dropped on Hiroshima just three weeks later. Having delivered its load without incident, Indianapolis moved on toward the Philippines to join the great armada moving in on Japan. Though intelligence reports assured Captain Charles McVay that the route from Guam to Leyte was safe, there were Japanese submarines active in the area. On the night of July 29, having detected with sonar the clinking of dishes aboard the Indianapolis from a distance of more than a dozen miles, the submarine I-58 sank the American ship, killing nearly 900 sailors in the explosion and its terrible aftermath.
Captain McVay was quickly court-martialed for having failed to follow evasive maneuvers, "the first captain in the history of the U.S. Navy," Doug Stanton observes, "to be court-martialed subsequent to losing his ship in an act of war." Although the sailors under his command would insist that McVay had been scapegoated, and although I-58's commander testified before the court that "he would have sunk the Indianapolis no matter what course she was on," McVay was never able to clear his name. He committed suicide in 1968.
Stanton captures the drama of these events in his vigorous narrative, which augments and updates Richard Newcomb's Abandon Ship!. Stanton observes that although McVay was exonerated by an act of Congress in 2000, the conviction still stands in Navy records. Stanton's book makes a powerful case for why that conviction should be overturned, and why the captain and crew of the Indianapolis deserve honor. --Gregory McNamee
Book Description
On July 30, 1945, the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed in the South Pacific by a Japanese submarine. An estimated three hundred men were killed upon impact; close to nine hundred sailors were cast into the Pacific Ocean, where they struggled to stay alive, battered by a savage sea and fighting off sharks, hypothermia, and dementia. By the time help arrived-nearly four days and nights later-all but 317 men had died. How did the navy fail to realize the Indianapolis was missing? Why was the cruiser traveling unescorted in enemy waters? And how did these 317 men manage to survive? Interweaving the stories of three survivors-the captain, the ship's doctor, and a young marine-journalist Doug Stanton has brought this astonishing human drama to life in a narrative that is at once immediate and timeless. The definitive account of this harrowing chapter of World War II history-already a bestseller in its hardcover and mass market editions-In Harm's Way is a classic tale of war, survival, and extraordinary courage.

IN HARM'S WAY.......2007-10-09
My husband was given this book and after he read it I couldn't put it down, I was mesmerized by the book and the writing and all the things we haven't heard about this particular incident in World War II....I have now bought two more books to give as presents for Xmas and another three books will be purchased for my son in laws and son to keep and read and pass on to their friends. Don't miss reading this one....Doug Stanton gave me the chance to read and visualize every heartbreaking moment in the life of the men that served on the USS Indianapolis...Its not just for men, ladies just pick it up and see for yourself. The Best book I Ever Read!!!.......2007-08-29
Hands down, this is the best book I have ever read. Not just military books, but of all books. Incredible story.
good study of human behavior in a disaster.......2007-08-29
I've heard about the Indianapolis for a long time (I guess from Quint's monologue in Jaws -- you can esily find it on you-tube). I read about Duncan Scott's late 90s episode to raise the attention of the Indianapolis before congress (Captain McVay was the only commanding officer who was court-martialed after losing his ship in an act of war).
The Indianapolis raised across the Pacific to deliver "Little Boy" to Tinaian Island before it was dropped on Hiroshima. Then it left to go to Leyte. This was a huge ship -- more than a thousand men. It was sunk by a Japanese sub -- but the Navy lost track of it (with all the ships arriving all over the world, orders were NOT to announce the arrival of a ship. But the corollary is people followed this order to NOT announce ships which DIDN'T arrive on time. Or tommorrow. Or tomorrow.
What happened after the sinking (the ship went down in minutes) was most of the crew was dumped into the ocean. And most succumbed to combination of drinking salt water (which kills you), exposure, drowning and sharks. I wasn't aware that life vests lost buoyancy after several days of use.
Another amazing thing is they got off a distress call, but the protocol was the receiver had to query the sender. There was no time for this. So the distress calls were ignored.
It was a comedy of errors for the way the Navy handled this. Since there was still a war going on, there was no news about this (I checked the archive of the NY Times -- much more about the court marshall than the event).
Since I read the book several weeks ago, there's been a number of mentions on TV of the indianapolis. Its a story you won't easily forget.
Finished it before husband did..........2007-08-12
I bought this book originally for my husbands birthday when it was first published. He was too busy to get to it so this summer I made him take it on vacation with us so he could read it. He started it and then told me some details about the book. My curiosity was immediately peaked so I stole the book and read the darn thing in a day and a half! I was mesmerized, shocked, angered and sad, sometimes all in the same chapter. And he STILL hasn't finished it! (Although his work schedule does slow things down abit, but still.) If this can happen back then, heaven only knows what may lie in wait now...
used for school.......2007-05-14
This went to my granddaughter for school and she was more than happy to get it in time for studies and it was in good shape.

Say Goodbye to Alan's Friend.......2007-09-11
This is the fourth in the series with Dr. Alan Gregory. I say that, because to fully appreciate this book, I think you should read the first three books. I'm not giving anything away, the synopsis says that in this book Alan's good friend Peter is murdered. Peter was a 'unique' person. He was a private person, a daredevil and a talented craftsman.
There are the usual twists and turns, as well as vivid descriptions of the Colorado landscape. The whodunit was a little bit far fetched, but for me I could overlook that because I was immersed in learning more about Peter and Adrienne. Friendships and how well we really know each other are a major theme. Alan and Lauren are now newlyweds and getting to further know eachother as well.
This series differes from others too in that Alan's wife has multiple sclerosis. The disease and it's impact on her life, and thus on his are dealt with really well. Lauren remains a vibrant, sexy woman, despite her MS.
Another exciting book from Stephen White..........2006-07-10
Stephen White has the courage to kill off a beloved recurring character in the first chapter! Another novel about beautiful Boulder, Colorado, fascinating lessons in psychology and a story that will surprise you with its ending. You won't be able to put this book down.
Excellent as always.......2006-01-29
This isn't the best of the Alan Gregory series, but it's still better than most of the other books I've read in the past year. I learned more than I wanted to know about theatre, and having Peter gruesomely killed depressed me, but the mystery was top-notch.
I suspect that the novel would be less enjoyable for readers who missed the first three of the series, so buy the others, too. And don't stop here; the series keeps getting better with each new book. I've already pre-ordered Kill Me, number 14, to be released in March.
LIKE JONATHAN KELLERMAN AND PATRICIA CORNWELL, BECAUSE I LIKE TO READ ADULT SUSPENSE READER, I LOVE IT.......2005-11-13
When Dr Alan Gregory's good friend Peter Arvin is found dying on the stage of a Colorado theater, suspicion soars that he is the second victim of a serial killer. Now the police want Alan to create a psychological profile of the murder. Peter's widow wants to know her husband's secrets. And Alan is desperate to know who killed his friend--and why. Did the guilty party have a sick taste for show biz? Was the murderer inspired by greed or by vengeance? Or by forbidden sex? Alan Gregory follows the trail of naked violence and hidden shame from Denver to the peaceful town of Boulder and to the wanton wonderland of Jackson Hole. He thought he knew his late late friend--but what he didn't know could kill him....
Good, but not Stephen White's best..........2005-03-31
This is a good book, but it's not White's best. I liked the mixture of the main plot with elements of Alan's personal life, including his relationships with his wife and friends. This particular story had a good number of red herrings thrown into the mix, so readers will find themselves incorrectly guessing certain plot twists (which is always fun!).
The only thing that I didn't like was the strong element of the theater and related jargon. If you're a theater buff, this would probably add an interesting extra dimension, but I found that it interfered with the story that I was really interested in.

About the Noah's Wish Investigation.......2007-06-05
This is in response to the post about Terry Crisp's organization being investigated by California's Attorney General's office. This is what's posted on her website:
Noah's Wish Board of Directors, March 26, 2007
We are writing to inform you that Noah's Wish is in the midst of an ongoing civil investigation by the California Attorney General's office concerning funds received by Noah's Wish during Hurricane Katrina. The California Attorney General has taken the position that certain funds donated to Noah's Wish during this period, and its immediate aftermath, are restricted and may only be used for the animal victims of Hurricane Katrina, rather than the animal victims of other disasters or for general disaster preparedness. Noah's Wish disagrees with the Attorney General's position with respect to those funds, but is working cooperatively with the Attorney General toward a timely resolution of the dispute.
In response to the California Attorney General, Noah's Wish has set aside the disputed funds and agreed not to use those funds pending final resolution of the investigation. Noah's Wish is unable to predict when the matter will be resolved. Because Noah's Wish does not presently have access to the disputed funds, it is unable at this time to continue with its efforts to provide disaster preparedness services and volunteer training.
We will provide you with an update once we have resolved this matter.
We appreciate your patience and also wish to express our gratitude for all that you have done to support Noah's Wish in carrying out our charitable mission.

State probe forces animal-rescue nonprofit to close
Queries $8M raised in wake of Katrina
Sacramento Business Journal - March 30, 2007
by Kelly Johnson
Staff Writer
A local animal-rescue nonprofit that gained national attention for its work after Hurricane Katrina, sparking more than $8 million in donations, was shutting down this month amid a state investigation into how it used that money.
Noah's Wish, which rescues and cares for animals in disasters, was preparing this week to close its El Dorado Hills headquarters. About a dozen workers have resigned or been laid off since late last year.
The California Attorney General's Office has been investigating the organization since last summer, examining how Noah's Wish used donations that might have been designated for relief efforts in the hurricane-ravaged area. The probe led to most of the nonprofit's funds being set aside in accounts where they couldn't be used for other operations.
The nonprofit contends the funds were used properly and said it is cooperating with investigators.
The group received millions in donations after news stories showed its efforts in an area devastated by the August 2005 hurricane. Former Noah's Wish insiders allege those millions were intended to relieve suffering in the storm-battered zone but were improperly used for other purposes.
According to documents obtained by the Business Journal from a former employee, an accounting firm hired by Noah's Wish to examine its books concluded that it would be impossible to conduct a reliable audit because so many records were missing from the period when the group and its volunteers were working on the ravaged Gulf Coast.
Documents filed by the nonprofit or provided by the former employee indicated Noah's Wish had about $210,000 in revenue in the year ended June 30, 2005, and almost 40 times that much -- $8.4 million -- in the next six months.
Expenses shot upward, too, from about $212,000 in 2004-2005 to more than $2 million in the last six months of 2005, including almost $400,000 to purchase vehicles. In early 2006, the group bought a storage building in East Alton, Ill., for $65,125 and leased office space in New York City, according to documents provided by the former employee.
Terri Crisp, founder of the group and its executive director until this week, was paid $6,200 in 2004-2005, tax records show. The documents supplied by the former employee covering July through December 2005 indicated Crisp received compensation of almost $141,000.
The nonprofit's board this week acknowledged the investigation on the group's Web site. "The California Attorney General has taken the position that certain funds donated to Noah's Wish during this period (of Katrina), and its immediate aftermath, are restricted and may only be used for the animal victims of Hurricane Katrina, rather than the animal victims of other disasters or for general disaster preparedness," a letter posted online said. "Noah's Wish disagrees ... but is working cooperatively with the Attorney General toward a timely resolution of the dispute."
Noah's Wish has agreed not to use the disputed funds while the investigation is pending, and the nonprofit cannot continue its work without access to the money, the letter said.
A spokesman for the state's top lawyer would not confirm or deny an investigation.
Ralph Nevis of Downey Brand Attorneys LLP in Sacramento, who represents the group, would not discuss the nature of the inquiry.
Founder was asked to leave board
Staff members are being paid through April 11, but this week only the office manager remained at the El Dorado Hills headquarters to close things down over the next couple of weeks.
At one point, the nonprofit had 15 employees working at offices in El Dorado Hills and New York City and from homes in other states. The three-person office in New York closed in January.
"They've reduced the staff because of funding. It's everybody," Crisp said Wednesday. She said she's taking her remaining days as sick leave, but by Wednesday evening a message on the group's Web site said she was no longer connected with Noah's Wish.
Crisp also served on the organization's board of directors from its founding in 2002 until February. She's no longer on the board, she said, "partly because it's a conflict of interest." The Attorney General's office "had asked for me not to remain on the board."
Because she's no longer on the board, Crisp said she did not have the latest information on the investigation or details about what it covers. Investigators, she said, have not interviewed her and were working only through the nonprofit's attorney and its board chair, Amy Maher.
Maher did not return calls Wednesday. Board members Lyn Kendrick, Gail Monick and David Lesser declined to comment on the investigation; another, Heather Hathaway, did not respond to a request for an interview.
Asked about allegations that the nonprofit inappropriately used money, Crisp said, "I don't know of any misuse of funds."
Lori Polk, chair of the Noah's Wish board during Katrina, left it the month after the hurricane. Before and after Katrina, she said, she voiced concerns about "the organization and the allocations of the donations we were collecting." She said she felt she was "fighting a losing battle trying to maintain my fiduciary responsibility to the organization."
The group "did not make decisions based upon board approval," she said, and made "expenditures without approval."
The former employee, who would only speak on condition of anonymity, said that "the amount of money that was spent by the organization was unbelievable."
The Attorney General's authority over charities includes investigating the loss of substantial funds during one year, illegal use of funds, diversion of funds from their intended purpose and excessive amounts paid for salaries, benefits, travel, entertainment, legal and other professional fees, according to the agency's Web site.
Raising money last month
Noah's Wish was soliciting funds as recently as February. In a letter to potential donors, Crisp wrote the nonprofit had "made a concerted effort to only ask for donations when the need truly exists, and not become a pest with repeated appeals."
Later, the letter said, "So why am I contacting you now? Noah's Wish is prepared for the next disaster, but lately this has become increasingly challenging." Because 2006 was a "fairly uneventful year," Crisp wrote, donations declined significantly.
Tax documents for Noah's Wish obtained by the Business Journal reported revenue of $8.4 million, almost all of it from contributions, between July 1, 2005, and Dec. 31, 2005. Some $4.8 million was in unrestricted assets and $1.5 million in temporarily restricted assets at the end of that year, financial documents indicate.
In June 2006, the accounting firm engaged to audit the books wrote the board that it could not express an opinion on the 2005 financial statements, according to documents provided by the former employee.
"A significant portion of corroborating evidence such as vendor invoices, receipts, deposit slips and other supporting data were not maintained during the period that the organization was responding to the needs of animals during Hurricane Katrina. The records that remain are not sufficient to permit the application of auditing procedures that would be adequate for us to express an opinion on the accompanying financial statements," according to the letter from John Waddell & Co. CPAs.
For the second half of 2005, Noah's Wish paid $405,948 in salaries and compensation, according to the Form 990 supplied by the former employee. Of that, Crisp received $140,900, while the second-highest compensation went to Sheri Thompson at $118,125, the tax documents show.
If the numbers are correct, it appears the compensation for Crisp and Thompson is well above the norm for nonprofits of this size, said Ann Lucas, executive director of the Nonprofit Resource Center. The annual median base salary for the executive director of a nonprofit of this size is $130,000, according to the 2006 Compensation and Benefits Survey of Northern California Nonprofit Organizations, which is produced by the Center for Nonprofit Management in Los Angeles.
Noah's Wish committed $1 million to the city of Slidell, La. for construction of a new animal control center; the old one was severely damaged by Katrina. The city has not received any of those funds, Slidell City Attorney Tim Mathison said.
Okay.......2007-02-17
I thought it was an okay book, but as I was reading, I found myself skipping through all the blah blah blah to get to the actual animal stories. The stories about the animals were great, but you have to wade through a lot to get to them.
FOR THOSE WHO'VE WONDERED.......2007-01-20
Terri Crisp has been in the forefront of animal rescue for many years, and her gripping accounts of freeing animals caught in disasters make for compelling reading. All of us who love animals and who have ever wondered what it's really like to work in disaster relief will enjoy this book and be informed by it. A wonderful addition to the library of anyone who is interested in animals, animal rescue, and disaster relief work.
One Person.......2006-10-10
'Mom, do you have any good books I can read? Maybe one about animals?' I asked my mom one day when I was bored. When my mom handed me this book, about a year ago, I didn't know what to expect. I read the first chapter and was hooked. The author is so dedicated to animals and has experienced so much, it's hard to put the book down. I think it only took me a few days to read it and I just finished reading it for a second time. This is a book that makes you want to go and make a difference in the world. It makes you realize how much the news doesn't talk about animals in a disaster. When I graduate collage, I want to become an animal disaster volunteer. Right now I'm only 14 so I have a few years but, while I wait it's nice to know there are people like Terri Crisp making a difference in the animal world. Before I read this book I didn't think I could make much of a differance, after reading this book, I've learned how much of a difference one person can make.
Book Description
A longtime professor at the Naval War College who once directed strategic and long-range planning for the Navy and Marine Corps in Europe considers the transformation of the U.S. Navy from a defensive-minded coastal defense force into an offensive risk-taking navy in the very early stages of World War II. Noting that none of the navy's most significant World War II leaders were commissioned before the Spanish-American War and none participated in any important offensive operations in World War I, Douglas Smith examines the premise that education, rather than experience in battle, accounts for that transformation. In this book, Smith evaluates his premise by focusing on the five carrier battles of the second world war to determine the extent to which the inter-war education of the major operational commanders translated into their decision processes, and the extent to which their interaction during their educational experiences transformed them from risk-adverse to risk-accepting in their operational concepts. His book will interest students of the Pacific War, naval aviation, education, and leadership.

Outstanding Historical Study.......2007-05-02
As an amateur military historian, my reading is done for self-interest and leisure. Having said that, I found this book to be an outstanding historical study of the commanders and their decisions in the five crucial aircraft carrier battles of WW II: Coral Sea, Midway, the Eastern Solomons, Santa Cruz, and the Philippine Sea.
The author (Dr. Douglas Smith) is on the faculty at The Naval War College of Newport, RI and he has impeccable academic credentials. He is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Naval Postgraduate School, The Naval War College, and holds a Ph.D. from Florida State University. Yet even with the author's impressive credentials, this is not another stodgy, hard-to-read book on obscure events of WW II. It is well-written and even entertaining at times, especially when the author / professor issues each commander a grade on the command decisions made during the heat of the five key battles.
I found the book to be a nice balance between the unknown (fresh material researched from the archives of The Naval War College) and the well-known (the biggest naval battles in the largest naval campaign the world has ever seen). I learned a great deal of new information on already well-studied events.
This book shines new light on the command decisions made by the U.S. Navy's top leadership, men like "Bull" Halsey, Chester Nimitz, Raymond Spruance, and Frank Jack Fletcher. It proves that more than luck or good intelligence brought success to the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre of WW II. The outcome of the five Pacific carrier battles can be attributed to the merit of the decisions made by the naval commanders: their aggressiveness, decisiveness, and wisdom.
Published by The Naval Institute Press, you find meticulous documentation from original sources. That is helpful for scholars. But for the amateurs like myself, it never bogs down into tedious reading.
I'm so glad I own this book!
Book Description
Their skills were honed in the jungles of Southeast Asia. Now the unwinnable, decade-long conflict is over. Vietnam is no more than a recent memory of blood and thunder. But for the U.S. Navy SEALs -- the nation's most able warriors -- a new war is brewing on the far side of the Earth.
Returning home as strangers in a strange land, the men of SEAL Teams One and Two must adjust to life in peacetime. The Navy, however, has plans for its legendary fighting force -- a bold new experiment that will replace submarine-borne nuclear missiles with alternate lethal weapons: SEAL swimmers, armed and ready to be launched at a moment's notice on daring land-based sorties. And before their training is completed, they will be tested as never before -- on a daring rescue in a desert land that will propel them into a volatile Middle Eastern powderkeg that's primed to explode.

In Harm's Way (#7).......2000-03-29
I have read all of the previous Navy Seals books by Riker. This one was not nearly as "gripping" as the others. It seemed to take too long to develope. Not bad to read, but it was too easy to put the book down as I read the story.
In Harm's Way.......2000-03-09
I have read all of Mr. Riker's books on Navy Seals and enjoyed each quite a bit. They struck me as being well-researched, as well as a rip-snorting read. This one is no exception as he continues the development of the characters Twidge Halstead and Doc Tangretti. I especially liked the way he dealt with the emotions they felt when they returned from Nam to come face-to-face with the anti-war movement. As a former serviceman, I almost felt that aspect as too close to home. Even though I noticed some errors in the way he had submarines do business in the last of In Harm's Way it was only a minor flaw in an otherwise excellent read.
Book Description
Millions of American women live each day with a troubling question in the backs of their minds: Will my partner come home today? It's a fact of life when the individual with whom they share their lives is in the military, the police or fire department, or any other dangerous profession. Of course, these women carry on normal day-to-day lives, pursuing their own careers and raising their families. But the constant knowledge that the worst could happen at any time can cause them considerable emotional pain and certainly raises significant practical concerns about how to think about and plan for the rest of their lives. For every woman in this situation, this book is a much-needed source of information, comfort, and support.
The book opens with chapter-length discussions of how you can cope with the fear, anger, and loneliness they feel related to your partner's high-risk profession. It gives practical advice for dealing with each emotion separately. Next, the book takes up the practical aspects of life partnered with a man in a high-risk profession. """I can only speak to myself."" True -- and yet we must listen. Sometimes his accidental wit speaks louder than any prepared statement. "Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we." "I always jest to people, the Oval Office is the kind of place where people stand outside, they're getting ready to come in and tell me what for, and they walk in and get overwhelmed by the atmosphere. And they say, 'Man, you're looking pretty.'" "I'm honored to shake the hand of a brave Iraqi citizen who had his hand cut off by Saddam Hussein." With George W. Bushisms V, the second term truly begins.

George W. Bushisms V: New Ways to Harm Our Country.......2007-07-16
A really good read. How anyone even cast a single vote for this idiot is beyond my imagination....and I am a 5th generation Republican....To read the various blunders and errors Bush makes with our every day language is a joke. We are the laughing stock of the world--and our childrens children will be paying for his mistakes. W. B. Goetz Lemoyne, Pa.
The Punchline.......2006-12-30
This is a nice collection, but it is very sparse. One would hope for a little more background or analysis on different quotes, similar to what you find in Cruel and Unusual. The quotes are alternately scary or funny, or both, and it is good to have them when trying to remember who the leader of the free world truly is, or to add on to the end of a joke or sig. But it's a very slim volume, and I would have liked more for what is paid out.
New Ways to Harm Our Country - And Then Some.......2005-10-01
Bushisms V continues the tradition of highlighting W's amusingly disturbing utterances - his `accidental wit and humor' - that have been carried over into his second term. To some degree, Jacob Weisberg has been literally forced to adapt along with W's sudden shift towards actually speaking English during mid 2004. Still, W never fails to provide us with statements that, while perhaps structured and grammatically correct, nevertheless range from humorous to horrifying and with a little of both in between. Take, for example, his statement that: `Too many OB/GYNs aren't able to practice their love with women all across the country.' Over a year later and I still break out with laughter over this priceless gem. That's the beauty behind this and many more remarks included in the latest edition. Even if you've heard them live or regurgitated by stand-up comedians, they still have the power to make you laugh or at least want to, depending on your end of the political spectrum.
Although a few remarks from Cheney and Rumsfeld are also included, you probably didn't need me to inform you that they have far less comedic value. Cheney is by far the most disturbing and his unsettling statements appear to be strictly for character development. The result is dark and devoid of humor, shifting the mood to near downright depressive and the only reason I won't award 5 stars (I'm in this for the laughs). However, Rumsfeld does offer a glimpse of hope: `Reports that say that something hasn't happened are always interesting to me, because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns - the ones we don't know we don't know.' It's no wonder he won the "Foot in Mouth" award handed out by The British Plain English Campaign for his legendary nonsensical remark.

Book Description
Kris Paap worked for nearly three years as a carpenter's apprentice on a variety of job sites, closely observing her colleagues' habits, expressions, and attitudes. As a woman in an overwhelmingly maleand stereotypically "macho"profession, Paap uses her experiences to reveal the ways that gender, class, and race interact in the construction industry. She shows how the stereotypes of construction workers and their overt displays of sexism, racism, physical strength, and homophobia are not "just how they are," but rather culturally and structurally mandated enactments of what it means to be a manand a workerin America.
The significance of these worker performances is particularly clear in relation to occupational safety: when the pressures for demonstrating physical masculinity are combined with a lack of protection from firing, workers are forced to ignore safety procedures in order to provewhether male or femalethat they are "man enough" to do the job. Thus these mandated performances have real, and sometimes deadly, consequences for individuals, the entire working class, and the strength of the union movement.
Paap concludes that machismo separates the white male construction workers from their natural political allies, increases their risks on the job, plays to management's interests, lowers their overall social status, and undercuts the effectiveness of their union.
