A Little Disappointed.......2007-09-23
I was disappointed in Hannah and Jonas' "personalities" - they didn't ring true from previous books, neither did the other sisters' actions. The only one truly believable was the Russian and Jackson. I still enjoyed the book, but nearly as much as her other books.
Romance with a Paranormal twist.......2007-09-21
once again Christine Feehan out does her self with this tale of a sister of 7 witches that takes you on an adventure that is not soon forgoten.. a must read...
Slightly Disappointed .......2007-09-17
I had to see what happened to the next sister but, was disappointed in the story. The well known character of Jonas seemed to be a totally different person than he was in the rest of the series. I found his description and actions in this book to be totally different than what I have grown to see and think of him as. That really distracted me from the story as I read it. Also, as much as I love Christine Feehan's books her recent ones have seemed to lack something that I just can't put my finger on. I'm sure when the next Drake sisters book comes out I'll get it but, I will have lowered expectations.
Jonas and Hannah-Together Forever.......2007-09-15
I loved this book! I bought and read it all in one afternoon/evening! The only thing I am going to say is that I found some of the reviews a bit shocking...
One by "Anonymous" titled 'Still good, but a bit tedious'-If you're going to dis Christine Feehan's novels you can't even leave a nickname-instead of -Anonymous-?!
Another two reviews one by "30 Book a month reader" titled 'Summarize' and one by "Reader" titled 'A huge disappointment' Why didn't you take the books and give them to your local library? Why not sell them, exchange them? Our landfills are big enough as it is and not only that...I don't know about any of you readers, but with the economy the way it is I don't have money to throw in the garbage!
Anyhow back to the review...
This was one of the most beautiful love stories, making me laugh, cry and terrified all at the same time. This is what true romance is all about-the all too human way that people who truly love each other act. This is what family is all about people-admitting your mistakes when you're wrong-learning to see yourself as you truly are, flaws and all. I felt Safe Harbor was jam packed with romance, action, suspense, and tenderness. Maybe some feel that Jonas and Hannah are too human and their feelings and emotions hit all too close to home because all of us can relate to them in some way. Remember it takes all kinds to make the world. Keep up the good work Christine! I'm look forward to Ilya and Joley's book and Jackson and Elle's!
Safe Harbor (Drake Sisters - Book 5) by Christine Feehan.......2007-09-06
Wow! A totally satisfying story of Hannah Drake and Jonas Harrington. Feehan alludes to problems Hannah has had while growing up, but doesn't really pinpoint why Hannah is sooooo shy. Is it because of her empathic senses that she needed to shut herself, mentally, emotionally, and physically, away from others? Wasn't there anyone --- besides Jonas and her family --- who could understand her anguish? Couldn't her aunts, all gifted women, help her to cope by teaching her ways to control her abilities? I would have liked to have read a little bit more about Hannah's youth and how her past lead to her profession as a model. There were little snatches from Hannah's past alluding to her shyness, but not a clear picture of the "why."
Jonas' character has been developed through all of the previous books. He's loud in his protectiveness, bossy, a take charge kind of guy; all necessary attributes for a cop. And, to keep himself in the forefront of Hannah's thoughts, he goads, needles, and verbally jabs at her. How could you not love Jonas? He's a manly man with a gooey heart which, of course, gets him into trouble at the wrong times and forces the "sisters" to rescue him time, and time again.
Safe Harbor is a very satisfying book and makes one eager for the next.

Inner Harbor, the highly anticipated close to the story of "the lives and loves of three brothers on the windswept shores of the Chesapeake Bay" that began in Sea Swept and Rising Tides, finds Philip, the last unwed Quinn brother, juggling his high-powered advertising job and his newfound family duty of helping to care for his young adopted brother, Seth. When Dr. Sybill Griffin shows up in the sleepy town of St. Christopher, Philip makes room in his hectic schedule for the mysterious woman who stirs his senses and threatens to steal his heart. And while Sybill can't deny her own growing feelings for the charismatic Quinn, the secret connection to Seth that she hides may destroy any chance that the two young lovers have at happiness. Full of heartwarming familial moments, tender romance, and a touch of tension, Inner Harbor is an outstanding conclusion to a truly stunning trilogy.

A very pleasant read (or listen).......2006-08-11
This book, which is a part of a trilogy, doesn't let you down if you are a reader of Nora Roberts. It will make you feel good and keeps you interested with the dipiction of the main characters, three "brothers," who have been adopted after experiencing extremely difficult childhoods and develope into very exciting, exceptional adults. The trilogy is about the power of love and how it can overcome extremely difficult barriers.
Irresistible.......2006-06-06
I did not read the other books in the series, but i absolutly loved this one. I couldn't put it down for the whole 2 days it took me to finish it. It's a great story with a great theme, and you actually feel like you're there. If you like any other Nora Roberts books then you have to read this one!
Another great story.......2006-03-15
Another great Quinn story. And with an interesting twist to it too.
A wonderful ending to a wonderful series.......2006-02-10
Great story to complete the series. I like the way the new characters mix with my old favorites. The only problem is that is leaves you dieing to find out what happens to Seth. Read Chesapeake Blue to find out what happens to Seth
must read if you've read the others.......2005-09-24
This series was a nice change of pace from heavier reading. Its enjoyable. The characters are entertaining. I liked the closure by including the 4th "son's" story. Occasionally the "family rallying around" borders on hokey, but then again, this is escapism so why not be inspirational and idealistic?

Customer Reviews:
Romance is alive.......2007-10-08
When I read the reviews for this book I decided that I would purchase it. I also, at the same time, purchased the rest of the books in this particular series (and some of her others too). I AM HOOKED!
The sexual tension between the characters is quite strong. As the plot unfolds the reader is drawn more and more into the story, hoping that Reese, the "strong and silent type" and Dr Tory King, the wounded but strongminded town doctor, will realize who they are to each other, and to the town.
I loved this book, and couldn't put it down. You will too.
great.......2007-05-14
This book was very good. After reading it I purchased the next three books in the series.
4 hours.......2007-04-01
I bought 10 books by Radclyffe and spent about 4 hours turning pages on each one. I suppose if I could turn the pages faster I would have cut the time by half. The price for four hours of being pulled into Maine, some hospital or other place with women hurt by life who find the warmth again is priceless.
Romance in Provincetown.......2006-05-04
Radclyffe's first book introduces us to Reese Conlon - the newly hired deputy sheriff; Tory King - the town's only doctor; and, of course, Provincetown - the legendary gay mecca. Tory and Reese have a lot in common - both are insulated from others, both are workaholics, both are dedicated to their professions. But they are quite different from one another as well - Tory knows why she's insulated herself whereas Reese has never learned to be with others.
Radclyffe is a fresh voice in the lesbian fiction genre. She writes about strong women overcoming seeming insurmountable difference to be with one another, she writes about trust and she writes about love. Her love scenes are graphic but gentle and sweet and sh never loses sight of the intensity of new love nor of her story.
Beware though. If you start reading Radclyffe, you will find yourself ordering everything the woman has written. Be prepared to stay up long after you should have turned the light off just to finish one more chapter. It is best to read the series books - the Honor series, the Justice series and the Provincetown books - in order so you understand where the characters started and why they do what they do.
Radclyffe's Most Incredible Romance Ever.......2006-04-03
I own and have read everything Radclyffe has published. I love her stuff and anxiously await each new release.
'Safe Harbor' is her most erotic, heart-wrenching story yet. The reader can't help but fall in love with Reese and Tori, and to subsequently await their coming together.
Reese, raised by her Marine father in a very regimented household and kept away from her lesbian mother as a teen, leaves active duty to become a deputy sheriff in Provincetown, MA. Because of the town's large gay population and her androgynous looks (like a cross between a young Gregory Peck and k.d. lang), everyone assumes Reese is a lesbian. However, in her early thirties, Reese has never had a relationship of any sort and isn't sure herself.
Tori, a gifted physician and former Olympic contender, is the town doctor. She injured her leg just before the Olympics and ruined her chances of competing. Her former lover, a woman Tori planned to spend a lifetime with, cheated on Tori and left her heartbroken three years prior to Reese's appearance.
Radclyffe skillfully takes these two women - one emotionally immature, and one emotionally barren - and creates a painfully erotic and emotional tale. Evidenced by the two sequels that have already been written, she leaves the story open for a proliferation of story lines.
Your personal collection will not be complete without this book and its sequels.

Book Description
Looking up from his newspaper from where he sat on the deck of the destroyer USS Dale, Harold Reichert could see the pilot plain as day—the leather helmet with chin strap, the goggles, and then the red rising sun painted on the plane’s fuselage. “I saw the torpedo drop and watched as it ran up on the old Utah.”
It was daybreak at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the beginning of the war, and the Dale was there; she would serve until the end, when the atomic bombs were dropped and Japan surrendered. In the words of those who manned her, the Dale’s war comes vividly to life in this first oral history of a combat ship from Pearl Harbor to Tokyo Bay. From carrier raids on Midway, Guadalcanal, and the Solomons to the bombarding of Saipan and Guam in the capture of the Marianas, from the Aleutians in the far north to strikes on Tokyo and Kobe, Tales of a Tin Can recreates the action aboard the Dale, and conveys as never before the true grit of wartime on a destroyer.

Not a bad Navy story.......2007-09-09
As a Navy Vet and one who served for a short time on a tin can I found this book interesting. I enjoyed reading it not only from a veterans perspective but also from a historical viewpoint.
Destroyermen The Few The Proud.......2007-08-28
This is a terrific read and well reflects the lives we endured on the "greyhounds of the sea". The memories of these terrific sailors is exciting and certainly reflects the challenges that they faced again and again. Having rode many of these ships over a 30 year Navy career I would certainLY recommend this to any and all. BRAVO ZULU!!!!!!!!!!!
Great Book.......2007-06-27
If you are a serious student of history, you cannot help but enjoy this book.
All too often when telling the story of WW II, the intimate and personal day to day experiences of the individual soldier or sailor get over looked.
This book tells that story, specifically how individual sailors dealt with the day to day stress of combat operations and the death of friends and shipmates; a great read.
They were both (Anchors Aweight) good!!!.......2007-05-26
Two different books and two different stories. If you liked the fun of the ship and the good times that were there, then you'll want to read them both, Anchors Aweight and Tin Can Tales!!!
kudos for a great book.......2007-05-15
We have totally enjoyed the book. It's written as if the men were talking to you right in the room.

Book Description
Stone Barrington investigates the secrets of a CIA officer's suicide in this next thriller in the bestselling series.
Stuart Woods's newest bestseller, Dark Harbor, brings us the perfect mix of sexy intrigue and swift suspense that have earned him legions of fans over the years. In this latest thriller, Stone enters the picturesque town Dark Harbor off the coast of Maine, where the shocking deaths of three people have cast a long shadow over this island haven-a locale as mysterious as it is exclusive.
Stone Barrington hasn't heard from his cousin, Dick Stone, in years-though he has fond memories of a teenage summer spent at his house in Maine. Then, Lance Cabot of the CIA interrupts an otherwise pleasant meal at Elaine's with news of Dick's death-apparently by his own hands. It seems that Dick Stone, a quiet family man who doubled as a CIA agent, methodically executed his wife, daughter, and then himself-or did he? What would cause a loving father and husband to murder his family as they slept? Before his death, Dick had appointed Stone executor of his will, giving him full control of the disposition of a sizable family estate. Was Dick preparing for his suicide, or forewarning Stone of his murder?
With the help of his ex-partner, Dino, and his friend Holly Barker, Stone must settle the estate and piece together the elusive facts of his cousin's life and death as a CIA operative. At every step Stone knows he is being watched by Dick's family-and one of them just may be a killer.
Customer Reviews:
Frank and Josephine Hardy rush to the rescue!.......2007-09-06
(This refers to the book-on-tape version) About halfway through this I realized that the mystery wasn't going to have a great resolution and that several seemingly important details (a household appliance, a kidnapping, a murder here or there) were going to be kicked into the rough in the hopes that the reader would forget about them. I was reminded of the Hardy Boys novels I grew up reading, but they're really more tightly structured (although not as much sex) than this book. Getting into the motorboat and quietly going up the cove to the abandoned boathouse! Figuring out from the angle of the bullet that - gasp! - it wasn't a suicide! Hopping into a plane to chase the villains through the sky - to almost crash into them! Almost all action taking place off-camera!
When Woods wants to write about something he cares about (Hollywood and the movie biz, airplanes ... umm, anything else?) he can bang out a darn good tale (The Prince of Beverly Hills). Plots with more depth or intrigue seem to get away from him (thus requiring insertion, as it were, of fairly gratuitous sex scenes to distract the reader - not that there's anything wrong with that) and, with this one, there's a sense in which the reader is just asked to say "keep turning the page - at least some of these details will be 'splained by the end". A book for people who miss Nancy Drew, Frank and Joe and their chums ferreting out the truth while getting into scrapes and escaping peril almost every chapter!
not bad..not bad at all.......2007-08-30
It's been a while since I've read anything but Stuart Woods, must less a Stone Barrington novel. It's nice to see that everything I enjoy about the Stone books was not missing from this one.
Overall I found the book pretty good, although I have to say that stone and his friends constantly walking into money (and the bedroom) does get a little annoying =)
It's Stone's uncanny knack of getting himself and the people closest to him in trouble that makes these books engaging reads. All the usual suspects are in this one: Stone, Dino, Holly Barker (I like how she's now crossed from her own series into the Barrington books), Lance, and a few others.
One thing I found annoying about the book was the way it ended. Woods is great at letting you think you figured out whodunnit only to pull the rug out from under you at the last minute, but a lack of explanation for certain crimes that took place in this book left me a little unsatisfied. I think if the book were another twenty or so pages, it would have been even better.
All in all, another solid addition to the Stone Barrington series of books. A fast and engaging read.
Stone Barrington "light" .......2007-08-22
Having followed Stone through his past adventures this was a resounding disappointment !! Woods must have called this one in !!!!
Dark Harbor.......2007-05-29
"Dark Harbor" is the 12th Stone Barrington novel by Stuart Woods. Barrington travels to Dark Harbor, and island off the Maine coast to execute the will of his first cousin, Dick Stone who had died along with his wife and daughter in what the police ruled as a murder-suicide. Barrington and his former NYPD partner believe that it is a triple murder by the position of the gun. They also learn that Dick was a high ranking CIA officer from Lance Cabot. They think it could be work related. There are 4 other murders and a kidnapping on the island. Stone, Dino, and the local policeman, Young, solve the murders. This is an entertaining murder mystery even though it is not Woods' best effort.
What? Exactly!.......2007-03-30
This book gets two stars because I actually read the whole book. What a dumb plot. And what's with the characters? Everyone has a pilot's license in their back pocket, they all have 5 million dollars waiting for them somewhere, and a bunch of other seemingly disconnected coincidences, which is a lame attempt to resolve the ridiculous plot.
Woods, buddy, please for the love of God and all humanity, get some better names for your characters. Stone Barrington? And his grilfriend is named Arrington? Huh?
Stone Barrington is investigating a murder case about his cousin whose last name is Stone. How stupid is that? What a childish/amateur way of trying to make a plot twist.
The one bright spot in this book...never mind, there isn't one.

Book Description
Taking to heart the classic idea that those who benefit from a crime ought to be investigated, here the eminent theologian David Ray Griffin sifts through the evidence about the attacks of 9/11--stories from the mainstream press, reports from abroad, the work of other researchers, and the contradictory words of members of the Bush administration themselves--and finds that, taken together, they cast serious doubt on the official story of that tragic day. He begins with simple questions: Once radio contact was lost with the flights, why weren't jets immediately sent up ("scrambled") from the nearest military airport, something that according to the FAA's own manual is routine procedure? Why did the administration's story about scrambling jets change in the days following the attacks? The disturbing questions don't stop there: they emerge from every part of the story, from every angle, until it is impossible not to suspect the architects of the official story of enormous deception. A teacher of ethics and theology, Griffin writes with compelling logic, urging readers to draw their own conclusions from the evidence. The New Pearl Harbor is a stirring call for a thorough investigation into what happened on 9/11. It rings with the conviction that it is still possible to search for the truth in American political life.
Customer Reviews:
Bush Admin too inept to have pulled this off.......2007-08-29
Beyond referring to the easily readable Popular Mechanics article of about two years ago, which demonstrates just how the jet fuel could have brought the towers down so quickly, etc., beyond Griffin not being a structural engineer or any other kind of engineer, beyond his relying heavily on Thierry Meyssan's thoroughly debunked "The Big Lie," I can tell you the No. 1 reason not to believe the conspiracy theory that the U.S. government is in any way behind 9/11:
Look at four years of the Iraq War; look at the post-Katrina response. The George W. Bush White House is too inept to have pulled this off.
Unfortunately, neither empirical evidence nor logical reasoning have ever stood in the way of a good, er, bad, conspiracy theory.
Blew my mind - we are living a nightmare.......2007-08-17
How do I get my mind around the inevitable conclusion: that 9/11 was an inside job? All the rhetoric from Bush and Cheney about the evil-doers, the sub-humans who care nothing for human life and want to kill us: they are speaking of themselves. We have entered that phase of world history where global power is slowly, silently being seized by very evil men who stop at nothing to unfold their demonic visions. The people who died in the WTC and the Pentagon were murdered by their own govt.
A few facts from the book: The towers were full of asbestos and it was almost impossible to demolish them any other way. By pretending the collapse was caused by terrorism, citizens cannot sue Silverstein for lung damage. There seemed to be a lot of incentive on the part of the leaseholder, Silverstein, to bring them down.
There was an unprecedented fullpower shutdown the weekend prior to 9-11. All security cameras were turned off. This according to an IT guy for Fidelity named Forbes, Google him. He reported a lot of workmen with spools of wire cables that weekend, he was told that internet cables were being upgraded. Because he worked all weekend, he took Tuesday off and watched the towers collapse from home in NJ. He instantly thought it was related to the work down over the weekend.
Also, all bomb-sniffing dogs were removed from the premises 5 days prior to 9/11 -- that would be Friday. What would the dogs have sniffed if they had been there that weekend?
Read the book.
Unbelievable !!.......2007-07-16
It is astounding and almost unbelievable that the President of the United States would plan or approve such a calamitous event as the 9/11 attack. Yet, this is the conclusion to which we are led by David Griffin in his book, THE NEW PEARL HARBOR. It would have to be characterized as the most terrible immmorality; deception, lying, killing, all for ignoble motives. If this was a conspiracy perpetrated by our own government, as Griffin seems to think, it was gigantic in its scope, involving hundreds and perhaps even thousands of people. You would have to include not only the President and Vice President, but also the top echelon of the military, together with a number of their subordinates, airline executives and technicians, engineers and detonators, New York City officials such as the Mayor and the Police Commissioner, the FBI, the CIA, and the media. To expect that all of these people would remain quiet about what happened if they knew that it differed from the official account, is asking an awful lot. Surely there would be outrage, and at least a few brave souls would speak out. Even in the face of intimidation there would be some that would be defiant. This particular point is difficult for me to accept - that the conspiracy could be so well contained.
Nevertheless, though I have until now accepted the official explanation of those events on 9/11, I am now not so sure. Griffin raises a lot of questions, not just a few, about what happened, as contrasted with the reports that we all know about. He calls for a complete and unbiased investigation by someone whose integrity cannot be questioned, who is beholden to no party or view, and cannot be compromised. I am in complete agreement with that view.
If this is what our government has done to its own people, we are in the gravest peril. It is immoral and treasonous and is not a tactic or strategy we can accept. If the allegations in this book are true, we citizens have a duty to clean house and vote out every single incumbent from office and elect fresh new people, those without political pedigrees. Even for the presidency, we should elect some relatively unknown figure, rather than any politician who has been feeding us a line these past years.
Chapter 7 is entitled DID US OFFICIALS HAVE REASONS FOR ALLOWING 9/11 ?
The author says that 9/11 was the "official" excuse for invading Afghanistan, the beginning of the War on Terrorism. Griffin asserts that the real reason was to establish bases to guard a proposed oil and gas pipeline from Turkmenistan to the Indian Ocean, running through Afghanistan and Pakistan. He further asserts that the written records of some top government officials indicate strongly that we invaded Iraq to "guard" their oil reserves (for ourselves ?). It is likely the oil supply will remain important to us for the foreseeable future. Instead of looking to the mideast for this supply, why don't we begin to mine our own HUGE oil reserves in Utah and Colorado, said to be greater even than those in the Gulf region? It is much more difficult to get this oil, and the process is much more expensive, but it would be an alternative to dependence on foreign oil and we wouldn't have go to war. Scientists and geologists are working now to develop and improve this process. Whatever the cost, the government could and should fund it.
For me the jury is still out. It is unthinkable that our government could plan and instigate the 9/11 attack and do this dastardly deed to its own citizens. But more than enough questions have been raised by Griffin to demand a complete investigation. I'm willing to endure the unpleasantness if we get to the truth.
This is a must-read !
Questioning your government is patriotic.......2007-06-27
Every American should read this book -- questioning the actions of our government is the duty of every American.
cashing in on 911.......2007-06-08
This book's conspiracy theories are so bad, you have to think the author is simply cashing in on 911. dispicable. example- why were'nt jets scrambled to intercept the hijacked aircraft from a closer USAF base? answer: We did scramble from the nearest base that had fighters on alert. True, Mcguire AFB is closer, but only if you were we going to launch a tanker or cargo aircraft. Book is complete fiction.

Book Description
Corrie McAfee
50 Harbor Street
Cedar Cove, Washington
Dear Reader,
Considering that I'm married to Cedar Cove's private investigator, you might think I enjoy mysteries. But I don't -- especially when they involve us! Roy and I have been receiving anonymous postcards and messages asking if we "regret the past." We don't know what they mean . . .
On a more positive note, we're both delighted that our daughter, Linette, has moved to Cedar Cove to work at the new medical clinic. A while ago I attended the humane society's "Dog and Bachelor Auction," where I bought her a date with Cal Washburn, who works at Cliff Harding's horse farm. Unfortunately Linette is less enthusiastic about this date than I am.
Speaking of Cliff, the romance between him and Grace Sherman is back on. But that's only one of the many interesting stories here in Cedar Cove. So why don't you drop by for a coffee at my husband's office on Main Street or our House on Harbor and I'll tell you everything that's new!

This whole series of books by Debbie Macomber was most enjoyable. I have read them all and her characters are real and most interesting.
KEEPS HER READERS ON THE RUN FOR MORE.......2007-08-10
Debbie always tries to give the best of her thought for her readers. As a result we keep on searching for more of her books.
In this 5th book of the cedar cove town, Debbie shows the concern that each character has for each other. She continues by bringing the pass of Mr. and Mrs. McAfee into their present, which started to heat up the story more. If you don't believe me, then I recommend that you get the book and read it for yourself if you have not read it yet.
I enjoyed reading this book a lot and I have just started the six book of this series.

Gossipy Good Book Welcomes Readers Back To Heart-Warming Town of Cedar Cove.......2007-02-21
Debbie Macomber is a great story teller. She has created a fictional town and peopled it with characters the reader in me has come to regard as old and dear friends. Simply put, I love this soap-opera-like town and its residents. In this fifth installment, the residents of Cedar Cove learn more about love and redemption, overcoming tragedy, dealing with rejection, and moving forward with grit and determination. There are unexpected bonding sessions, life-threatening situations for favorite characters, and the angst of young love.
50 HARBOR STREET is a gossipy good book that gives us another peek into the lives of people we have grown to love in previous installments. The residents of 50 HARBOR STREET are Roy and Corrie McAfee. As a private investigator, Roy solves a case that could impact his life more than any other he has tackled. The mystery of who is sending him anonymous notes is solved and it reveals a stunning back story to this quiet and unassuming couple.
Roy and Corrie's daughter Linette has moved back to Cedar Cove but spurns her mother's matchmaking skills to go after a young doctor who shows no interest in her but lots in her best friend.
Ben Rhodes' son David comes to town oozing charm and good looks. Why is he making enemies so quickly?
Allison Cox has fallen for a "bad boy" who seems intent on self-destruction. Even the support of parents Zach and Rosie may not make lemonade out of this crate of lemons.
Ian and Cecilia as well as Maryellen and Jon each handle second pregnancies filled with difficult decisions while love is in the air for Rachel Pendergast, Cal Wilson, and that on-again off-again couple Grace and Cliff. You'll want to know what's new with Olivia and Jack, Bob and Peggy, Justine and Seth, and all the friends and neighbors who have become part of your fictional family.
As usual, an unsolved mystery at the end and some dangling threads set the stage for the next installment, 6 RAINIER DRIVE, at the home of Justine and Seth Gunderson.
Great Book.......2007-02-06
Must have if you like this series. Debbie has done it again. I can't wait for the next one to come out.

Product Description
The Naval Institute Press is pleased to make available for the first time this cloth edition of a now-classic war memoir that was a best seller in both Japan and the United States during the 1960s. Originally published as a paperback in 1961, it has long been treasured by World War II buffs and professional historians for its insights into the Japanese side of the surface war in the Pacific. The book has been credited with correcting errors in U.S. accounts of various battles and with revealing details of high-level Imperial Japanese Navy strategy meetings. The author, Captain Tameichi Hara, was a survivor of more than one hundred sorties against the Allies and was known throughout Japan as the Unsinkable Captain. Called the workhorses of the navy, Japanese destroyers shouldered the heaviest burden of the surface war and took part in scores of intense sea battles, many of which Captain Hara describes here. In the early days of the war victories were common, but by 1943, the lack of proper maintenance of the destroyers and sufficient supplies, along with Allied development of scientific equipment and superior aircraft, took its toll. On April 7, 1945, during the Japanese navy s last sortie, Captain Hara managed to survive the sinking of his own ship only to witness the demise of the famed Japanese battleship Yamato off Okinawa. A hero to his countrymen, Captain Hara exemplified the best in Japanese surface commanders: highly skilled (he wrote the manual on torpedo warfare), hard driving, and aggressive. Moreover, he maintained a code of honor worthy of his samurai grandfather, and, as readers of this book have come to appreciate, he was as free with praise for American courage and resourcefulness as he was critical of himself and his senior commanders. The book s popularity over the past forty-six years testifies to the author s success at writing an objective account of what happened that provides not only a fascinating eyewitness record of the war, but also an honest and dispassionate assessment of Japan s high command. Captain Hara s sage advice on leadership is as applicable today as it was when written. For readers new to this book and for those who have read and re-read their paperback editions until they have fallen apart, this new hardcover edition assures them a permanent source of reference and enjoyment.
Customer Reviews:
A good view of naval history.......2007-09-10
Excellent view of the naval WWII war in the Pacific from the viewpoint of a knowledgeable Japanese officer who was in many of the battles. Very readable and informative.
Five stars and two thumbs up!.......2007-08-07
I read this book in paperback the summer before I started college in 1972. I still have the old Ballantine paperback in my personal library here in my office - along with many other classic WWII memoirs and histories which were released between the early '60's and '70's - and they remain to this day the backbone of any historians efforts to understand the conflict from a human perspective.
Hara was there. Regardless of the rhetoric, and the apologetics of his stance, it's impossible to argue with the eyewitness accounts he provides, and the detail of his style.
He creates at once a sympathetic and enthralled audience for his side of the story - one which needed telling, and which wasn't available until he committed it to print.
An enduring classic; this one belongs on the shelf of any person who wants to thoroughly understand the Pacific War.
Japanese Destroyer Captain...WWII.......2007-06-11
I recently had the oppertunity to read "Japanese Destroyer Captain: Pearl Harbor, Guadalcanal, Midway-The Great Naval Battles as seen Through Japanese Eyes.
Tameichi Hara paints an interesting palet of not just the Naval engagments, but the social and economic upheavels in Japan during the war. The hardships he mentions on the civilian population were horrendous, and the reader soon realizes that the "bitter taste" of war is universal for every nation that finds itself at war.
The Naval battles and discription of those engagements was enough to give the "arm-chair" Admirals and Captains cold chills, however, sometimes I felt that Tameichi Hara was too redundent, and...much more of a tactician than I wanted to read about.
Overall, a very good book, and one worth reading for anyone who has the slightist interest in history, and Naval wafare.
Outlines the life of a Japanese Destroyer Captain in the Pacific conflict 1941-45.......2007-06-11
I first read this book in the early 1970's, on the life of Tameichi Hara and his activities while a destroyer captain during the Pacific conflict in World War Two. I found it a very interesting read, on his life and what led up to his involvement in most of the major actions against the U.S. Pacific fleet, especially in the Solomon Islands. The book is well written and kept me just as entranced the second time as it did the first. It is refreshing to have a Japanese version of the events instead of an American one. Well recommended.
Through Japanese Eyes..........2007-06-10
Growing up, I read as much as I could of the Pacific Theater during World War II. I was disappointed that so much was available from the U.S. side, with very little published on the Japanese side. Of course one reason for that was so many Japanese died during the war. So it was a great pleasure to find this book. Hara fought in almost every major surface engagement during the war, and still lived to tell about it. As another reviewer wrote, Hara gets into some of the technical aspects, notably his work before the war on the "Long Lance" torpedo. This weapon was one of the few systems that was superior to the allies- and was a surprise to them in 1941. It had extremely long range and a large warhead and was used with devestating effect during the night battles around Guadalcanal, many of which Hara was an eyewitness of.
In short, if you are interested in WW2 Naval History, this book is a "must have" for your library.

O'Brian Companion.......2007-10-05
I am more than 1.2 way through the Patrick O'Brian / Jack Aubury series and being a sailor have enjoyed the books very much. This companion allows an even deeper appreciation for the series as it allows me to visualize the places where the historical fiction is taking place.
harbors and high seas.......2007-09-14
This is a must have book when reading the Aubrey-Maturin series. It brings to life the voyages through maps and synopses of each place the ships traveled. Also it explains that some of the locations are fictional but places them in likely locations. I really enjoyed this book and wish I had it when i began reading the series. You have to get it.
Good companion book.......2007-08-22
A great companion book to the O'Brian "Master and Commander" Series. It's nice to see the maps of the places described in the books. It was especially helpful in being able to picture fight scenes and ships positioning. If you want to be able to visualize what the author wants you to see, buy this book.
For the true O'Brien aficionado's out there . . .......2006-06-30
A wonderfully illustrated geographical guide to the complete series. Great for both historians and the geographically-challenged, this book enhances the enjoyment of each novel. While King tries hard to avoid any 'spoilers' one has to be careful in looking at the route plots too early in each novel lest you see unexpected developments revealed - or, as Jack Aubrey would say, you'll be brought by the lee like a true lubber! Enjoy.
a rather weak effort.......2005-12-21
I dislike rambling Amazon user reviews, and so I'll keep this short; Mr. King's book is reasonably good in terms of maps, though one might wish that a few more were added. The introductory material is somewhat interesting, if a bit simplistic. The prose leaves something to be desired; I found myself constantly irritated by particularly inept turns of phrase.
All of this could be forgiven, though, if it were not for the most disappointing aspect --- which is the reason I'm writing this review --- namely, King's summaries of the novels. These summaries were one of the main reasons I decided to buy the book. I had read the first 14 O'Brian novels over the course of three months, earlier this year, but a fall semester of full-time graduate studies understandably pulled me away from the adventures; I found that the passage of time had left the exact order of events a bit hazy, and so I was looking forward to reading summaries of the first 14 installments. King's summaries are truly terrible; he usually recounts only the battles in any given book, if that much, and rarely mentions anything else of note (Diana Villiers and Sophie Aubrey are mentioned only twice each, in passing; Wray is mentioned once). Also, in order to 'avoid spoiling the endings,' he has left out the most important plot points of each novel; in certain cases he will leave out the entire final third of a plot, because to summarize that aspect of the novel would be to 'give away the ending,' which seems to me extremely idiotic if one's stated goal is to provide summaries of the novels (and not, say, a book review, in which one wouldn't want to give away the ending).

Book Description
With her successful books Cottages by the Sea
and Coastal Retreats, Linda Leigh Paul has beautifully captured the dream home in an ideal setting. Now she broadens her scope by visiting the most picturesque and private seaside cottages on all three coasts of the United States, from the cliffs of Big Sur to the dunes of Nantucket to Florida's sandy beaches on the Gulf of Mexico. The most charming cottages in the country are here, including a 1924 stone cottage in Carmel, a weathered clapboard cottage on the Isle of Hope, Georgia, and Tennessee Williams's Key West cottage.
Seaside cottages are intrepid structures. They hold onto the earth as a brace against heavy seas, furious flood tides, and stormforce winds. The names themselves conjure departures and returns, danger and escape: Destruction Island, Peril Strait, and Wrath Cape describe one arc of shoreline. Another coastline offers Fair Harbor, Port Protection, and Safety Harbor. Still another speaks of lost encounters: Dogs Keys Pass, Tortugas Harbor, and Alligator Reef. But the interiors of these cottages evoke only warmth and beauty, providing comfort for those eternally drawn to the sea. Many display artifacts of life on the water: nautical objects and treasures found on the beach, as well as journals, letters, postcards, and books that reflect the long, rich history of seaside living.
Customer Reviews:
peaceful relaxing.......2006-05-18
I love to read and I love houses on the water. When I need to relax I grab this book. It has also given me some ideas to use in my own home to give it that cottage look. Very inspirational and easy to read.
Great detail source.......2006-03-10
Great source of architectural interior details and inspiration for small residential structures.
Sea Spray and Salt-Crust.......2004-07-20
When I picked up this book I was surprised to find it so filled with a wonderful variety of cottages. Cottages on the Coast is a small and wonderful glimpse of styles around the coasts of the United States. A small "photo album" near the beginning shows early pictures of some of the cottages that are featured later and as those same cottages appear today. A great selection of cottage styles, representing different regions of the country, are fascinating with their accompanying stories. This is a book I will go back to over and over again, to look up something I remember, to find something new and to just plop down with it in my lap for pure beach imaginings. I love this book!
Lusting for a Summer Cottage? Pick This Book........2004-07-15
Wherever they are located, seaside dwellings share several common traits. These hearty homes are crafted from tried and true materials that age gracefully in the sea air and reflect local building traditions and styles. They balance the storms of winter with the peaceful days of summer and maximize beautiful views whatever the season.
Cottages on the Coast presents an extensive variety of homes from sea to shining sea. Linda Leigh Paul selected more than 25 examples from Bainbridge Island, to Big Sur, from the Florida Keys, to Tybee Island, and north to Maine. You will be captivated by hundreds of beautiful photographs of vernacular exteriors and very personal interiors.
Cottages on the Coast stands out because the interiors and exteriors exude a lot of personality, and they seem authentic and attainable. New England is well represented with houses in Maine, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket. The tranquil cover image, Treasure Cottage on Key West is truly a cottage at a mere 500 square feet. Treasure Cottage is filled with the owners carefully arranged antique collection, which does not clutter the small space but gives the home so much personality. Other examples, a modernist cottage designed by a Frank Lloyd Wright pupil in Carmel, complete with loads of natural light, and built-in furnishings. Or a cottage recently built on a private island in the Puget Sound, built on a solid rock foundation, with enormous interior beams to withstand the fiercest storms, decorated in a simple manner re-using found materials such as driftwood for a mantel and stair case railing.
Cottages on the Coast will be a source of inspiration for readers who are considering rehabbing, designing, or decorating a seaside dwelling. Or if you are an avid armchair traveler Cottages on the Coast will fill you with travel ideas for your next coastal break.
