Agatha Christie, one of the best as always.......2007-08-20
really scary. In some ways a refreshing break from the usual formulaic mystery. Very creepy. Great.
Great Agatha Christie Book!.......2007-06-13
This is a typical Agatha Christie book - a combination of mystery & suspense, along with the "I-can't-put-this-book-down" feeling.
I recommend this book to all Agatha Christie fans!
Cover her face, mine eyes dazzle, she died young. --The Duchess of Malfi.......2007-03-01
After moving into a new house, the newly-wed Gwenda suddenly recalls the murder of a woman named Helen in her house which she had witnessed when she was 3 but had later forgotten. Gwenda and her husband Giles decide to find out what happened in that house. They trail every single clue available to them and it is later found out that Helen was actually Gwenda's stepmother. But the strange thing is although Gwenda's father strongly believed that he had strangled Helen to death and he later killed himself out of guilt, Helen's body was never found. Firmly believing her vision that Helen was murdered by a man with "monkey paws" hands, Gwenda and her husband are determined to uncover the long buried truths. Miss Marple kindly advises them to let the sleeping murder lie but to no avail and she has no means but to get herself involved as well. But could they really find out what happened on that night 18 years ago?
I'm surprised that I was able to figure out the ending fairly quickly but that doesn't take much away from the fact that it's a very enjoyable read. A jewel in the Miss Marple series, no less.
Sleeping Murder.......2006-12-14
Are you in for a first-class mystery? Well then Agatha Christie's 296 page long Sleeping Murder is just the book for you. It's a real page turner and has something new for you around every corner.
Gwenda and Giles Reed are a couple of newly weds buying a house. After being in the house for a while, Gwenda gets an eerie feeling that she had been in the house when someone was murdered there more than 20 years ago. Yet she doesn't even remember living in or seeing the house before ever in her life.
The mystery starts getting intense when Miss Marple is introduced into the story. Miss Marple, 90 year old aunt of Giles, an experienced detective who always gets to the bottom of things with her sharp skills.
This book is great for all mystery lovers ages 11 and up. I really enjoyed this book because of the suspense and the way Agatha Christie presented all the clues. For example:" He could probably imitateHelen's handwriting pretty well- but it would'nt fool an expert. So the sample of Helen's handwriting he sent with you with the letter was'ny her handwrting either. He wrote it himself,so naturally it tallied out."
Thie book will also make you think deeper, for those of you out there who love to think. It will make your head go for a spin! Sleeping Murder is a book that you will never put down, so follow Gwenda, Giles and Ms. Marple to solve the mystery!
I much prefer Miss Marple to M. Poirot.......2006-11-26
This was the first Agatha Chrystie book I read. I bought it because of the cover. It remains for me as one of the more readable and easiest to reread mysteries by the author. My AC favorite is Destination: Unknown.
I never did take to other popular English murder mystery writers. I liked Agatha Chrystie because her books were about murder being unforgivable and that influenced me as it was from her books that my first thoughts on murder came. I quite dislike all the media products these days that "thrill" the consumers with murders and where "inventiveness" is used to describe ever more sadistic and frankly, mediocre expressions of nastiness.
Book Description
When school psychologist Skye Denison investigates the death of a popular teenager who was cast as Sleeping Beauty in the school play, she uncovers some shocking revelations about prominent Scumble River citizens. And even ever-optimistic Skye knows that in this case, finding the killer won't end this tale happily-ever-after.
"Swanson knows small-town America, its secrets and its self-delusions, and she writes as if she might have been hiding behind a tree when some of the bodies were being buried." (Margaret Maron)
"School psychologist Skye Denison is the quintessential amateur sleuth: bright, curious and more than a little nervy." (Earlene Fowler)
Customer Reviews:
An interesting series..........2005-08-26
I'm still having trouble with Skye Denison, the main character of this small-town series. While I enjoy the author's use of locale and her knowledge of psychology, I find the character of Skye very unlikable. She has a need to help people; she wants to be seen as independent; she feels compelled to get to the bottom of things. Yes, I think it's all about Skye's feelings, not the people she hurts, alienates, and leaves fumbling in her wake. She lies. A lot. Cute, pert, trying to be funny little white lies. She lies to justify her meddlesome nature. I may never like Skye, but the mysteries are engaging enough to keep me reading. I just wish the main character had a little more integrity to go along with her mystery-solving acumen.
Best in the series.......2004-12-27
Denise Swanson hits her stride in this, the third book of the Scumble River Mystery Series. Skye Denison is in the middle of an unfruitful counseling session with an uncooperative student when she is asked to check out a situation in the school gym. She arrives only to find that a young girl who is playing the lead in the school production of "Sleeping Beauty" is dead. Skye cannot resist the temptation to carry on her own investigation despite the objections of the local police chief who has been her off-again-on-again boyfriend. In the course of her investigation, Skye uncovers a lot of secrets in her small town, including infidelity and cheating in order to win beauty pageants. This book has interesting characters and a plot that moves along at just the right pace. Cozy fans will enjoy this series, particularly this book.
Some Issues.......2003-07-16
This was a good book, but again, my favorite book so far is the first one (Murder of a Small-Town Honey), and I haven't read the fourth one yet, so there's hope yet.
During my reading of this book, I felt that Skye didn't really understand teenagers, or was for some reason bias towards those in the book. (Yes, yes, I'm a teen myself!) Anyhow, the storyline, again, didn't intrest me that much. Justin and that girl who's name I can't remember, were more likable in this book than Skye herself. Also, one more thing, through out the book, Skye was asking for too many things! I know it's her job to help the children, but I was annoyed how she would always try to find the principal to request he do something.
Overall, it was good, but I was annoyed by it. The one thing I'm gald about in this book, is that the author didn't kill off the murderer at the end! (It was a nice change!)

Even Prince Charming Couldn't Save This Beauty!.......2003-07-12
In the 3rd book in the Scumble River mystery series, we see amateur sleuth, Skye Denison still working hard at fitting into her hometown and happily counseling students at her job. Skye is a school psychologist, returning home to live and work after humiliating herself while delivering a valedictorian speech 12 years prior. It seems that Skye left with a chip on her shoulder about "the small minds of those in a small town" and has to return home with her tail tucked firmly between her legs after losing her last job. Since she left her last job in disgrace (although not her fault), the only job she can get is in the school system that she shunned when she left town. While trying to re-establish herself in her hometown, she helped to solve two previous cases that have cleared family members of murder.
In this case, Skye finds the body of Sleeping Beauty on stage at the high school, but this time no Prince Charming will come to her rescue. It seems that this former pageant competitor has been murdered, and there is a long list of suspects in her death. Skye has difficulties investigating this case as her police contact is mad at her, and she is stymied by the high school kids and their parents. Why did this seemingly popular girl have so many enemies? Who really killed this beauty? With the help of her mother and possible love interest, Simon Reid, Sky sets out to find the truth about this girl and her not-so-fairy tale life.
I enjoyed this book although I found myself skipping a few paragraphs here and there while reading it. The mystery was appealing although I found that I had solved it earlier than I normally do. The characters are very interesting, and the aspect that I like the most in this series is the relationships between all of the people in this small town. If you enjoy cozy mysteries set in small town America, give this series a try.
The first book in the series is "Murder of a Small Town Honey". Enjoy!

Then a line of dialogue heard at a London play triggers a terrifying vision of a dead woman's body with the killer poised over her, sending Gwenda running in terror into the streets. Fortunately, Miss Marple is also at the theater and, curious, she pursues Gwenda. What follows is one of the intrepid investigator’s most engaging cases as she ignores her own advice to Gwenda to “let sleeping murder lie.”

SFBA's other serial killer........2000-05-12
No surpise that Graysmith's sophomore true crime book (his first being Zodiac) would be about the Trailside Killer. I remember his rampage well, having spent my entire life in the San Francisco Bay Area. Although not quite as well written, it still is a fascinating look at San Francisco's "other" serial killer.
Interesting.......1999-06-17
The other "review" listed here is completely worthless.
The book is interesting, if not particularly well-written; contains lots of information about the "trailside killer" in the SF Bay Area. Contains lots of information about the background of the killer, and about the killings.
I'm not sure I'd recommend buying it, being out of print, but it's certainly worth checking out of the library.

CAN SOMEONE GET ME A REAL COP?.......2005-06-04
Pierre Grazziano, or Grazzi, as he is known, is a Paris police investigator who would rather do anything else than actually strain his mind to solve a difficult case. Instead of worrying about bringing justice to crime victims, his department is more intent on office politics and not rocking the boat about anything. And there's nothing that will make you look worse than bungling a complex investigation.
So it's not Grazzi's day when he is assigned to investigate the murder of Georgette Thomas, a beautiful 30 year old woman. She was found dead from strangulation, in a sleeping-car of a train travelling from Marseilles to Paris. There were five other people in the sleeping-car with her and its up to Grazzi and his equally unenthusiastic partner, Gabert, to interview the other occupants to find out who had a motive for the killing. The problem is that one by one, those witnesses are being murdered, possibly by the same person that killed Georgette.
The Sleeping-Car Murders doesn't really have a lot going for it. Its plot is uneventful really and cliched. Japrisot is unable to build up any momentum or tension because of the overall boredom that comes through the policemen especially. I feel sorry for any crime victim that would expect these characters to take care of their safety. If you don't really have passionate characters, how can you make a passionate book? The only people that are mildy interesting are the other occupants of the railcar, which Japrisot reveals when he tells chapters from their point of view. But these soon pale because you know they are going to be murdered no matter how interesting they are. It also seems like the police would have made more of an effort to protect those witnesses once they started dying like flies. I guess that was too much trouble though.
In conclusion, I thought this novel was pretty mediocre and seemed like more of a hack job than anything else.
The first clue is in the title...........2000-05-26
This masterfully written novel opens with a terrific scene: the train porter wanders through the cars, picking up the detrius of a long night's travel. He finds a scarf, two raincoats, an umbrella, and a leak in the heating system. Then he finds the corpse and his discovery sets off the usual chain of events: ambulance, police, news reporters.
But the title is "The Sleeping-Car Murders": more than one. And indeed, the other passengers of car number 4 begin to die, violently and seemingly at random.
Underlying these deaths, though, are the corrupt, evil, and stupid motives of greed and ego. By the final pages, we realise that the incidents are not random--yet even then the denoument is darkly surprising.
Japrisot is a master writer. His prose is spare and evocative. He is able to create memorable characters and dark suspense in less than two hundred pages. He sweeps us up into a mystery which is intricate and twisted, and he leaves us shocked and saddened by the evil of human kind.
A good read but ... not everything one reads is "meaningful".......2000-03-03
The first Sebastien Japrisot I read was One Deadly Summer - a book that caused me to have too high expectations of The Sleeping-Car Murders. The Sleeping-Car Murders is best read as you would read any book by Agatha Christie, etc. etc. ... read as a book of the mystery genre the book is well plotted and has an excellent, surprising and realistic conclusion. However, the reader is unlikely to identify with the "detective"; rather it is easier to identify with the young woman coming to Paris for the first time. And unlike One Deadly Summer, most of the characters are painted sufficiently well to carry the story but not so well that the reader particularly cares what happens to them.
For a delightly, fun and casual read, I recommend the book.
Slow and unimaginative.......1999-02-08
Seemed I just kept putting this book down out of boredom, and maybe that's why the plot seemed so confusing--it just wasn't interesting enough for me to follow. The concept was good (that's why I bought the book) & it's the frist Japrisot I've read, but it was lacking in suspense. In the end, the only interest I had in who committed the murder was so I could put the darned thing down for good.
A moody mystery vividly told........1999-01-01
Sebastian Japrisot's extraordinary noir tale succeeds admirably. His characters are believable and convincing. The plot is intricate but not contrived and the denouement is nothing short of brilliant. Atmospheric and vivid, one can nearly taste and smell the settings within which his characters live the story. A great read.

good book but.........2006-11-04
..As much as I'm sure Barbra is a nice girl, and while she definitely didn't deserve what happened to her,I can't say that she had no culpability in the matter. She had many chances to get away from what was once her dream guy,but she refused to do it.I think they both had dependent personalities;whether that was from a violent incident in Barbra's past,or rather if she saw Minns as a father figure of sorts and needed that,I have to wonder. But she definitely would have been better off leaving him and the material items to be, and fleeing the area. Why on earth she didn't,I don't know, as I can't beleive it was because, like she said, it would have been easier to link Minns to any violence brought against her.It seems she was still secretly hoping they would get back together.
As far as Barbra saying she couldn't afford to travel back and forth for the theft hearings ..what's more important than your life??? While she was right that she did have the right to be in Tx (or anywhere she wanted to live),and even though she didn't want to let Minns get the best of her by feeling that he'd run her out of town,I can understand that, but-she was given a warning that things could get dangerous if she didn't get out of there.I think I would have left asap.
I kept thinking Minns had a lot of signs of bipolar disorder, and when I got to the part where it stated a Dr. had been telling him for years he had manic depression,I thought ..BINGO ! It does sound like maybe his untreated illness played a part in what happened to Barbra.(paranoia from it). It's a shame he wasn't committed and treated for it,but I'm guessing his money and connections would have bought him a way out of it anyway.I don't know if Barbra, having some health care knowledge and background, realized what was wrong with him,but I can't help but think she did, and was hoping he would pull out of his latest mood swing.Unfortunately, untreated BPD only tends to get worse over time.I'm not making excuses for Minns and for what he did(it also sounds like he lacks a conscience, termed antisocial personality disorder),but it's a shame Barbra didn't realize how serious the situation was and get out of there.I don't understand why she moved back to that same city either, and stayed awhile, even after another scary incident occured that indicated Minns was behind it.
This is definitely a book with lots of things to ponder. In the end,Barbra sounds like a strong woman who made great strides to overcome her disability,in spite of all that happened to her. That's much to be proud of,and I hope she is. :)
*I want to add one thing here,Barbra testified in a court of law, under oath, that she knew Minns was married when she arrived in Tx,and that the townhouse he bought, and it's contents, belonged to him.I can't help but wonder how her lawyer thought that could be changed. It would mean Barbra would have to admit she lied. Also, the impromptu wedding Minns performed was done while he was still married.Would that have held up in court? I don't know, but I would have gotten myself out of there as soon as I'd found that kill switch in my car, especially since Minns had previously talked about wanting to kill his ex-wife,and was obviously after Barbra now.I have to wonder why on earth she would have stayed with him or wanted him back after he talked seriously about killing someone.I keep thinking I missed something here?
As far as Barbra saying Minn's soon-to-be ex was the 'enemy' ..she was his wife and mother of their children for God's sake ! I don't have any respect for her for choosing to be Minn's mistress,no matter what kind of marriage he said he had.I'd have kicked his arse right back to his wife and kids!
And I wonder why it took Minns over an hour to get to Barbra when she was having a miscarriage? After all the phone calls from Minns' friends telling her to abort...could it be he was not helping her on purpose?I believe so.
Do some not believe personal responsibility?
An Extremely One Sided Tale of Attempted Murder.......2006-09-26
While I sympathy with the victim of this book, Barbra Piotrowski, I found this book to be extremely one sided.
Readers of told the story of how young, sweet, innocent Barbra is seduced by Richard Minns after being a victim of a brutal rape that left her with a inability to trust men. After falling in love with Minns, Barbra moves from Los Angeles to Huston to be with him; unaware at the time that he is still very much married and she is nothing more than a mistress.
After learning that he is married, Minns convices Barbra that he has an open marriage and she agrees to stay. Even following occassional beatings, watching her dream guy manipulate and control others, and being forced to be who he wants her to be, she stays in the relationship. One morning after an explosive verbally abusive incident, Barbra decides to leave. When she does, she takes everything with her and moves out of the apartment she and Minns shared. As he had done so many times in the past, Minns becomes very angry and seeks revenge because Barbra took what he felt belonged to him.
While [....] is seeking revenge both underhandedly and via the legal system, Barbra mentions numerous times she is hoping that she is Minns will reconcile. Of course, that never occurs. And eventually Minns does get even...he hires someone to kill her.
Although the hired killers failed miserably at killing their target, they did manage to paralyze Barbra. And just as Minns had stated many times in the past, he did, essentially, get away with murder.
While I found the story to be interesting (amazing how one man with money and connections can evade prosecution of numerous charges), I believe this book is a bit misleading. We are told of how Barbra is so innocent and so niave. We are painted a picture of someone who was so in love, had victimized early in life and felt Minns was her knight in shining armor. I'm just not buying it.
When she first met Minns, I'm sure she still was still niave...she was only 20. But this same innocent learns that she is a mistress and stays. Barbra, at some point, signed a contract with Minns that, should the relationship ever end, she would receive a huge settlement of both cash and furniture. Barbra made comments to the effect, while on the "run" from Minns, that having his belongings would help them reconcile. That's a coniving woman's way of thinking...how many battered women leave things behind that truly are theirs to keep just to get out of an abusive relationship? There is a list that goes on and on of things that were not so innocent in nature, but readers are truly pushed to feel that way about the victim.
The author did an excellent job of writing the book and doing her research. It is worth reading...just don't get sucked in to her world of make believe!
one of the very best true crime books.......2006-04-05
This is not your average true crime book! The story of Barbra Piotrowski and Richard Minns is the quintessential narcissistic relationship. It is fascinating to see just how manipulative and successful a narcissist can become, using family, friends, strangers, hired thugs, the legal system, and law enforcement to seduce, posess, and nearly destroy the life of his victim. A self-made local celebrity, Minns lived the ultimate narcissistic existance, honing his body at the gym (which he owned), bleaching his hair at the beauty shop, keeping a wife and kids in one house while openly escorting his much younger, blonde, beautiful "fiance" around the same town, in front of his own kids and friends of his real family. As other reviewers pointed out, Barbra, though the victim of monstrous and unbelievable manipulation, was too much of a user to be a truly sympathetic character, as the author attempted to portray her. She was definitely an opportunist. I don't think this hurts the book, though. The reader obviously draws her own conclusions about the character of Barbra and will not be led by the author. And, ultimately, no one deserves the mind-bending gaslighting and physical abuse Barbra went through, let alone the horrible crime which finally ended the relationship. This book is truly riveting. The term page-turner could have been invented to describe this book. It stacks up to the best of Ann Rule, which from me is the ultimate accolade.
Sleeping With The Devil.......2002-09-18
As a professor of Women's Health, I want to be sure to remind all women to read "Sleeping With The Devil" by Suzanne Finstad. It is one of the best texts out there that describe in mind-shattering detail the intricacies and hidden subtleties of toxic relationships. I have found Ms. Finstad's meticulously researched story of Barbara Piotrowski to be one of the best educational and life-saving assignments that I can give to my students. Thank you, Suzanne. Your insight and biographical genius continue to amaze me.
Gripping tale of murder and obsession.......2001-12-02
Heard the taped version of SLEEPING WITH THE DEVIL by Suzanne
Finstad, a true crime story about a Texas beauty queen and the
self-made millionaire who loved her . . . or so it seemed . . . then his
world fell apart and he blamed her . . . that is, before he attempted
to kill her . . . I now see why I like these type books better than
typical mysteries . . . I'm reading one now (the latest by
Mary Higgins Clark), and there is just no comparison . . . this
is so much better! . . . it makes you feel like you really
know the characters, and you find yourself hoping--against
all odds--that the ending is going to differ from what really
happened . . . my only disappointment was in the ending,
but that was not because of the author; rather, somebody
seemed to get away with murder--or something very close
to it . . . if you're in the mood for a gripping tale of obsession
and murder, this is the book for you!

Book Description
Sent by her husband to find a suitable house, a young bride, Gwenda, finds what she thinks is the perfect choice ―a charming Victorian villa called Hillside. But strange events soon lead her to believe that the house is haunted. When she begins refurbishing the house, Gwenda discovers that tearing out a wall, putting in steps to the garden, or choosing new wallpaper for the nursery are actually restoring the house to an earlier appearance, one she couldn't possibly know about. Then she has a vision of a dead woman lying at the foot of the stairs. Certain she is losing her mind, she turns to Jane Marple for help.
