Must have for stash.......2007-05-13
I haven't knit many socks, but I love this book.
Instructions are for double pointed needles. Easy read instructions. I did fine switching the instructions to circular needles instead. The books is set up with easy socks in the front and most difficult in the back. So they reach many different areas in experience of sock knitters. They also have all different people for the sock patterns, meaning for baby, children, man, woman; not just one type.
Best sock book I own. It's never far from my knitting chair........2007-04-09
I've been knitting forever but hadn't tackled socks because I was intimidated. I've had this beek since it came out and it doesn't leave my side. The instructions on heels and gussets were instrumental in my becoming a competent sock knitter. Even today, when I can knit a sock without a pattern, I still reference this book for various heel turns. This book gave me the skills sets needed to use other sock books.
That's not to say I'd make all of the socks in this book (many are very silly). But, I do use this book more than 95% of the books in my knit/crochet collection.
Both Creative and Basic Patterns.......2007-03-26
This book has a wide range of patterns in both skill level and creativity. There is enough information here that a beginner could easily make their first sock from this book; there are also patterns here that would stretch the skills of even advanced knitters. All patterns are very well written and photographed. While not a technique book, there is a very nice index with multiple methods given for most techniques. I particularly enjoy looking at the socks in the section entitled "Whimsical", as these designs are very creative, ranging from edible licorice socks to miniature stockings to the cover photo, socks with a complex swirling pattern. Many of these patterns are on my "To Make" list and hopefully I will eventually have the skill to make some of their 'adventurous' level designs.
Incredible socks.......2007-03-08
If you like knitting socks, you'll love this book. It has the most basic to very challenging patterns. The socks on the cover are something else!
Knitter's always provides us with the best to knit! If you like knitting socks, you'll enjoy this book.
Wonderful Book for Learning How to Knit Socks for the First Time.......2007-01-15
I can see why this book recieved a large number of positive reviews. I wished that I had found this book first when making my first pair of knitted socks. There is a wonderful diagram in this book which labels all the components of knitted sock construction, which I had not seen in any other book, and every pattern is illustrated with a set of double pointed needles (dpn's) showing how many stitches you should have on each needle for each stage of the sock construction, an awesome 'way finding' hint for the beginning sock knitter. There is a wide variety of patterns from beginner to advanced, with something for every knitter including lace, texture and color patterns.

Morality for Beautiful Girls, Precious Ramotswe, founder and owner of the only detective agency for the concerns of both ladies and others, investigates the alleged poisoning of the brother of an important “Government Man,” and the moral character of the four finalists of the Miss Beauty and Integrity Contest, the winner of which will almost certainly be a contestant for the title of Miss Botswana. Matekoni is more complicated then he seems.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Author.......2007-07-05
Keeps your interest all the way through the book, in fact, throughout the whole series.
Warm, loving and human.......2007-06-22
I just love the series of the No.1 Ladies Detective Agency. What has always impressed me about these books is how no person is simply a one-dimensional character. Maids, cooks, Important Government Men, fiancees, children and garage apprentices all have complex motives and emotions. How human.
Morality Is Not A Movable Feast.......2007-05-06
This is another wonderful slow amble through Botswana, but do not be deceived, badness is like a Mamba snake in the brush, waiting to catch you unawares. Pretty faces can hide bad thoughts and even worse morals. Or a total lack of morals. Even on the African plain where life should be serene it is not so, a brother is being poisoned and there is much unhappiness and suspicion in the household. A lost boy child smelling of lion turns up in the middle of a safari hunting party, so is given over to the orphan farm, where he will be coaxed back to health. With a little help from Mr.J.L.B. Matekoni, who also needs some nursing as he suffering from depression. So the two help each other.
Back in town beauty queens turn out to have feet of clay and to cap it all the fiance of Mma Ramotswe is turning his back on his beloved engines. Hence his rest cure out at the orphan farm. But the business cannot run itself, what if those useless boys take a hammer to an engine again? What would happen to the reputation of Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors?
Action is required all round and the ladies of The No.1 Detective Agency don't fail us.
This is not the book to read if you like fast-paced thrillers, this is more Miss Marple but instead of Darjeeling she is sipping her cup of red bush tea on the veranda of Zebra Drive thinking about how the daddy, that fine judge of cattle would have solved these manifold problems.
I love each and everyone of these books and I commend them to you all for some much needed calm and peace in a bustling world. They are also written in the most beautiful english and are a joy to read.
Morality, mysteries and a bit of mayhem in Botswana.......2007-04-06
This series of books has been a favorite of mine since they were first published, long may they continue.
In this the third in the series of books about the No 1 Ladies Detective Agency we are drawn into several little mysteries, some more serious than others, like the important man who thinks his brother's wife is poisoning his family, the man who wants to make sure that all the girls in a beauty pageant he is holding have good morals and are not "bad girls".
Also there is the worrying mystery about Mr Matekoni's strange illness, is he sickening for something or does he have a strange illness called depression and if he does have depression, how can it be treated? And who is the strange little boy in the Orphan camp who can't speak, only growls and why do people think there are lions about when lions are only found in the Kalahari?
Add to this a smart secretary from the Botswana Secretarial school with a passion for shoes who got 97% in her exams, along with a plethora of delightful and understated characters, including the enigmatic and shrewd Mma Precious Ramotswe who knows what makes the human mind tick, and you have yet another wonderful book from the Master author Alexander McCall Smith.
Hooray Mma Makutsi!! .......2007-03-18
The adventures of Mma Ramotswe, the strong, feisty, proud but compassionate lady detective (the only in Botswana, maybe Africa) continue in MORALITY FOR BEAUTIFUL GIRLS, the third novel of the No.1 LADIES' DETECTIVE AGENCY series. Things are not going too well for Mma Ramotswe - the agency is facing money problems, and her fiance, the kind and up-till-now ever reliable Mr. JLB Matekoni starts behaving very strangely and looses all interest in everything, including his passion, being a mechanic at his business Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors.
While Mma Ramotswe is juggling these personal problems, she is yanked into solving the complex case of an Arrogant Government Man who fears that his greedy sister-in-law wants to poison his brother for money. How much can one lady detective handle?
Helping save the day is Mma Ramotswe's former personal secretary, now promoted to Assistant Detective, Mma Makutsi. Mma Makutsi, who is 'too dark,' has glasses that are 'too big', and whose hair just is never 'quite right' really comes into her own in this novel - she becomes 'Assistant Manager' of Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors, whipping it into shape with the force of her personality so that its in a much better condition than even when Mr. JLB Matekoni ran it.
She also continues her duties as Assistant Detective, ably proving herself as she handily solves a case of determining which finalist in 'the Beauty and Integrity contest' actually has integrity- and thereby receives big bucks which keep the No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency afloat.
Like its predecessors, this book is not your typical "who dun it" detective story. As Mma Ramotswe flatly tells the Government Man, "We help people with the problems in their lives. We are not here to solve crimes."
Along with helping people with the problems in their lives, Mma Ramotswe and Mma Makutsi continue in this book to have hilarious but often wise insights about gender, beauty, marriage, weight, criminology, treatment of elders and servants, cows, and a number of other topics, all highlighted by the ever-wise old Botswana Morality.

A Must Read for Managing Workplace Conflict.......2007-06-15
Daniel Dana, aka the "conflict doctor", is an established authority on workplace conflict management and resolution. In this book, he helps readers to understand the nature and cost of conflict within the workplace and offers a toolkit for managing and resolving such conflicts by advancing a concept for employees and managers to acquire skills for resolving conflicts between oneself and another and as a third part between others.
A unique feature of the publication is the author's introduction of a tool for calculating the monetary cost of conflict within any organization that should get the attention of those responsible for monitoring the corporate bottom line. It uses practical cases to illustrate important concepts and offers alternatives to the universal and innate human 'fight or flight' response to conflict, while sharing insights on why it is important to understand the structure of conflict in order to know how to resolve it successfully.
As a certified trainer of Managing Workplace Conflict and subject matter expert with Mediation Training Institute (MTI), an international organization founded by the author, I have found this publication and a companion volume by the same author, "Managing Differences" to be an invaluable training resource for understanding the nature, cost, management and resolution of workplace conflict.
This insightful, comprehensive and well written self-help volume is a must read for employees and managers in any organizational setting and a priceless resource for the student of conflict management and workplace dispute resolution.
Great resource.......2007-05-09
I've trained through MTI with Daniel Dana and his approach to conflict is easy to understand and implement within personal and professsional organizations. This book offers practical principles in an easy to read format.
Looking for the basics in CR, this is your book!!!.......2005-08-02
This is a great intro to the skills of a mediator, or just a human being in this day and age. Daniel Dana is a leading teacher in this area. Anyone who is looking to attain this skill will be greatly served by reading this book.
Handy book for resolving conflicts........2001-12-12
This book gives the main points in simple language that anyone can understand. Further all the points and key terms a mediator needs to remember are hightlighted and enclosed in boxes on the relevant pages.
All points are explained with examples and simple cases.
I recommend this book for all who prepare for examination. This is a good book for quick reference.
Usable information.......2001-05-22
I found this book to be of tremendous value. Conflict Resolution is an easy to read resource that is full of practical information that can be applied immediately on the job. It is not only a must-have for managers and supervisors, but also an essential resource for anyone who would like to have more effective relationships and live a conflict free life. Daniel Dana writes with a friendly and often humorus style and it is clear that he has a vast knowledge of this topic. He has a great ability to take a complex subject and make it simple and easy to use with specific "how-to" steps, and that really makes this book valuable to me. I have now successfully used the resolution approaches outlined in this book both in my profession as a consultant and trainer, and in a family conflict situation that was causing a lot of pain. Additionally, the ideas in this book have worked for me in both one-on-one conflicts and group conflicts. The bottom line - this works.

How to Eat Fried Worms has happily repulsed children since its original publication in 1973. Now youngsters can experience this classic story in a whole new yucky way, by listening to it on audiocassette. Narrator Jay O. Sanders gives extra kick and vitality to this already lively yarn. He throws himself into the role of a 10-year-old boy, facing the most revolting bet of his life. Billy must eat 15 worms in 15 days--but the reward will be worth it: $50 for a shiny new minibike. Luckily, Billy's friends cook up these fat juicy grubs in a variety of appetizing ways--drenched in ketchup and mustard, fried in butter and cornmeal, and the pièce de résistance, a Whizband Worm Delight (an ice-cream worm cake). Sanders derives obvious pleasure from reading (and singing) out loud the hilarious rhymes and childish chants concocted from the mind of the book's author, Thomas Rockwell.
"Trout, Salmon, flounder, perch,
I'll ride my minibike into church.
Dace, tuna, haddock, trout,
Wait'll you hear the minister shout."
How to Eat Fried Worms is a ghastly gastronomical treat that will dazzle young listeners. (Running time: two hours, two cassettes) --Naomi Gesinger
Book Description
Because of a bet, Billy is in the uncomfortable position of having to eat fifteen worms in fifteen days. The worms are supplied by his opponent, whose motto is "The bigger and juicier, the better!" At first Billy's problem is whether or not he can swallow the worm placed before him, even with a choice of condiments from peanut butter to horseradish. But later it looks as if Billy will win, and the challenge becomes getting to the worm to eat it. Billy's family, after checking with the doctor, takes everything in stride. They even help Billy through his gastronomic ordeal, which twists and turns with each new day, leaving the outcome of the bet continually in doubt.

My boys love this CD!.......2007-10-01
They are 7 and 9 and loved the movie so i got this for a car trip. Great idea!
Other Books.......2007-09-03
Very amusing gross out type kids tale. It taught me what horseradish was, at least! Quite old, but you didn't really notice, that, as it was about the kids and the whacky bet that two of them have made about how many ways you can eat those little crawling and wriggling earthworms. So pretty entertaining.
very pleased.......2007-08-04
I was very pleased with the timely manner that this product was delivered in, as well as the new condition that I was promised. I would order from this vendor again!
Overcome the disgusting title.......2007-06-10
This book is not just about eating worms. It is about how awkward childhood can be and one child's way of adjusting to change in his environment. This kid faced a bully without using violence and turned a crowd of kids where picking on him into his friends. It is a great read for any kid but especially one who has to move around and be the "new kid."

How To Eat Fried Worms
By Thomas Rockwell
Reviewed by Mallorie Ihme
All because of a bet with a kid named Joe Billy will have to eat fifteen worms in fifteen days, in the book How To Eat Fried Worms. If Billy loses the bet he will have to pay Joe fifty dollars but if Billy wins the bet Joe will have to pay Billy fifty dollars for a minibike that he's always wanted. When Billy first made the bet he said the BIGGER the worms the juicer the better. I can assure you that is how Joe made them BIG and juice. At first Billy had a lot of trouble swallowing the worms especially with the extra condiments like peanut butter and horseradish. Now that Billy has gotten use to the extra condiments he might actually have a chance of win the fifty dollars and a minibike. Billy's parents found out soon enough that Billy was eating worms and they called the doctor immediately but the doctor didn't seem to have a problem with it. Billy kept eating worms to finish off the bet, but the question is will he win the fifty dollars and a minibike or did he eat all those worms for nothing?
Even though this book was an easy read it was worth the while and hard to put it down at some parts. I would recommend this book for a fun read but I would defiantly read it again for fun.
Thomas Rockwell wrote How To Eat Fried Worms an Exiting and fun eventful book.

My son is going through this with lot of enthusiasm. Well structured and very popular amongst others.
Great fun! Great knowledge for mom and son!!.......2007-04-17
This book is really neat. I love it. I learn so much every time I sit down with it. It is divided into parts for US questions, World questions and I can't recall what else. It comes complete with maps and it's very user friendly. I am not so strong in geography. When my son in grade 7 was second in a geography bee, I decided that he and I should brush up. So I got this book from Amazon and I do like it. I think the authors have put a lot of care and interest in this book and if you desire to strengthen your geo knowledge, this is the book for you.

A Must Have Car Book.......2006-11-10
What a great book to take along in the car on a trip. Good questions for adults to ask each other while driving long distance and something for the kids to enjoy also.
Good, short questions about the world that you probably knew most of the answers to but forgot. Skip the fast food drive-thru, get the book.
The Geography Bee book is a better buy.
Really good.......2006-02-24
I'm using this to teach my 7 and 6 years old children about geography. Really good starting point to prepare for the bee.
Book Description
Everyone's favorite proper Southern lady is back and feistier than ever in her sixth hilarious adventure
Imagine Aunt Bee from The Andy Griffith Show with a lot more backbone and confidence," wrote Publishers Weekly about Miss Julia, Ann Ross's endearing Dixie doyenne of decorum. In her latest romp, Miss Julianow Mrs. Sam Murdochreturns from her whirlwind elopement, only to find herself roped into Hazel Marie's scheme to raise money by throwing a beauty pageant. Though it all seems a tad distasteful, it's nothing compared to the revelation that Pigeon Forge, the marriage mill across the state line that wedded Julia and Sam, might not be legitimate. And a flustered Julia can't help wondering whether she and Sam can keep up appearances before the town finds out they might be living in sin.
Download Description
Miss Julia's wildly popular escapades have kept readers coming back again and again. In Miss Julia Meets Her Match, she finally succumbed to Sam's charms and became Mrs. Murdoch. Will marriage dampen this proper lady's sense of adventure? Fortunately for her growing legion of fans, the answer is no. In Miss Julia's School of Beauty, Hazel Marie is organizing a beauty pageant to raise money for the sheriff's department and enlists Miss Julia's help in teaching the contestants etiquette and poise. Between settling into a new, unfamiliar home and refereeing the squabbles between Sam's housekeeper, James, and her beloved Lillian, Miss Julia could use a distraction. But when Hazel Marie and Little Lloyd-who are still in residence at her old homestead-have a dangerous domestic mishap that only she can set right, Miss Julia packs up and moves back home, Sam in tow.

FUNNY....!!.......2007-09-30
I love the Miss Julia series....so funny...it brings humor to my busy, busy day...Every Miss Julia book has been fantastic...don't miss any of the books...!
Miss Julia's School of Beauty.......2007-08-24
This book is a romp with "Miss Julia" through a local beauty pagent. Of course, there's a potential scandal that Miss Julia is trying to keep under wraps in her usual spunky.
A Silly Plot, A Waste of Time.......2007-06-08
I love books about Southern women. Usually they are interesting and fun to read. When I picked this book up from a bargain table, I thought I was getting a book I would enjoy. At that time I didn't know this was a series, so when I started reading it, I decided to order two more of her books. Hopefully, they will be better than this one. This book is a total waste of time. Miss Julia makes a mountain out of ever molehill, and a problem that drags on for 300 pages could have been solved easy as pie. Miss Julia and her new husband Sam learn that the preacher in Pidgeon Forge, Tenn. might not have been a real preacher, and they might not be legally married. That's the problem. All they would have had to do was find a real preacher and get it done legally, which is what Sam wanted to do, but Miss Julia comes up with every excuse in the book not to get married again, all the while moaning and groaning that she and Sam are living in sin. The whole premise was so stupid that I'm sorry I ordered the other two books. I just hope they are better than this one. This one is awful.
Miss Julia's School of Beauty.......2007-01-17
I did not purchase this book for myself, but as a Christmas gift. I had recently read the book and just loved it, so I purchased it for my good friend. I just love the Miss Julia series. As usual the books are full of laughes and good life lessons. Ann B Ross always offers a good story that makes you think about your own life and how to live in a Christian manner. These books are very light hearted and you will definately take away a feel good attitude.
Miss Julia's Beauty Shines Through.......2007-01-15
This is the 6th installment in the Miss Julia series. All our favorite characters are here and as usual Miss Julia is in a jam! As alway it's entertaining to see what lengths she'll go to trying to keep her secrets! Maybe not the best of the series, but still fun.

Book Description
Photography's great success gives us the impression that the major questions that have haunted the medium are now resolved. On the contrary - the most important questions are just beginning to be asked. These fourteen essays, with over 200 illustrations, critically examine and challenge the prevailing formalist values of late modernism that have been applied to the medium and suggest new ways to explain the history of photography.
The essays examine the social consequences of aesthetic practice and look at how photography constructs sexual difference, how it is used to promote class and national interests, and at the politics of photographic truth.
Richard Bolton is Associate Professor and Chairperson in the Art Studio Department at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
Customer Reviews:
Ouch, but Ahhh........2001-11-24
This book makes my brain hurt, but in a good way. Some of the essays are pretty tough to read as they are very deeply rooted in the world of art historical criticism, but don't let that stop you from getting this book; you'll learn a lot and come away with some good insights into the subject of photography and the history of photography. It would be very helpful to get a companion book that contains some of the artists and works that are discussed here, so you have the images to look at and non-critical, historical looks at the artists for background and context. Something like Beumont Newhall's "History of Photography" would be an excellent match.
Book Description
Imperial Leather chronicles the dangerous liaisons between gender, race and class that shaped British imperialism and its bloody dismantling. Spanning the century between Victorian Britain and the current struggle for power in South Africa, the book takes up the complex relationships between race and sexuality, fetishism and money, gender and violence, domesticity and the imperial market, and the gendering of nationalism within the zones of imperial and anti-imperial power.
Anne McClintock explores the sexualizing of the terra incognita, the imperial myth of the empty lands, the dirt fetish and the "civilizing mission", sexuality and labor, advertising and commodity racism, the Victorian invention of the idle woman, feminism and racial difference, and anti-apartheid culture in the current transformation of national power.
Using feminist, post-colonial, psychoanalytic and socialist theories, Imperial Leather argues that the categories of gender, race and class do not exist inisolation, but emerge in intimate relation to one another. Drawing on diverse cultural forms--novels, advertising, diaries, poetry oral history, and mass commodity spectacle--the book examines imperialism not only as a poetics of ambivalence, but as a politics of violence. Rejecting traditional binaries of self/other, man/woman, colonizer/colonized, Anne McClintock calls instead for a more informed and complex understanding of catgories of social power and identity.
Customer Reviews:
It was fascinating!.......2003-08-20
I don't agree with the reviewer for Library Journal because I found McClintock's book thorough and solid. She situates the book in a very clever way in the myriad of "isms" and scholarly debates on post-colonialism. She argues that one cannot talk about colonialism without at the same time investigate how gender, race, sexuality, class etc, has shaped the colonial discourse and discussion.
I would recommend this book to people interested in feminist, gender, postcolonial studies but also to anyone who wants a more indepth and creative analysis of the current debate on postcolonialism and gender.
