We know the shadow by many names: alter ego, lower self, the dark twin, repressed self, id. Carl Jung once said that the shadow "is the person you would rather not be." But even if you choose to hide your dark side, it will still cast a shadow, according to author Debbie Ford. Rather than reject the seemingly undesirable parts of ourselves, Ford offers advice on how to confront our shadows. Only by owning every aspect of yourself can you achieve harmony and "let your own light shine," she explains. "The purpose of doing shadow work, is to become whole. To end our suffering. To stop hiding ourselves from ourselves. Once we do this we can stop hiding ourselves from the rest of the world."

As threatening as shadow work may seem, it is often very effective in creating transformation. Ford's step-by-step guidebook is modeled on a highly successful course she developed about embracing the shadow. Ultimately, she helps readers illuminate the gifts and strengths that lie within the shadows. Although this works sound vague, clouded in dark metaphors, Ford manages to make it clear and specific. She has the writing gifts of a successful seminar leader--inspirational, trustworthy, and able to convey murky material with grace and ease. --Gail Hudson

Book Description

Debbie Ford believes that we each hold within us a trace of every human characteristic that exists, the capacity for every human emotion. We are born with the ability to express this entire spectrum of characteristics. But, Ford points out, our families and our society send us strong messages about which ones are good and bad. So when certain impulses arise, we deny them instead of confronting them, giving them a healthy voice, then letting them go. It is to these feelings that Ford turns our attention, these parts of our selves that don't fit the personae we have created for the rest of the world. She shows us the effects of living in the dark, of keeping all our supposedly unsavory impulses under wraps. We find ourselves disproportionately frustrated and angry at the selfishness of friends, the laziness of colleagues, the arrogance of siblings. When we are unable to reconcile similar impulses in ourselves, Ford explains, we waste our own energy judging others instead of empathizing. But most important, we deny ourselves the power and freedom of living authentically. Through the stories and exercises in The Dark Side of the Light Chasers, Debbie Ford shows us not only how to recognize our hidden emotions, but also how to find the gifts they offer us. The very impulses we most fear may be the key to what is lacking in our lives.

5 out of 5 stars The Dark Side of the Light Chasers - Debbie Ford.......2007-05-26

This book will help you "find" yourself. A very useable aide in self-enlightenment. Does what it says it can.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2007-05-12

I've read hundreds of self help books. This one is straight forward, courageous and at times a bit brutal. I'll admit that sometimes she suggests things I didn't want to face in myself. I was especially taken with her open honesty about her prejudices, which she didn't believe she had. Out of all self-help books I've read, this is in my top 5 if you want to transform your life into something more whole and more powerful than anything you've known.

5 out of 5 stars Applicable from the first page.......2007-01-18

This book is a very practical guide to accepting yourself rather than trying to change yourself. It is very user friendly and easy to read and understand. You can either use it as a "handbook" for how to be "whole" or as a way to enhance your qualities in your spritual life. It can easily be read several times. There are exercises to do that you may want to do immediately or return to when you have a different level of understanding of the book. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Life Changing!.......2007-01-03

If you were allowed only one self help book, this is the one. Start this book with an open mind if you want to change your life for the better.
So many of my questions were answered with this book. Be aware of the big mirror that will appear before you and embrace it. This book will peel away layers of feelings and emotions you never knew you had. Follow this book and your life will change. I've read a lot of books in my day and this one really digs deep and leads you to a more peaceful and calm life.
You will find the power of forgiveness is really huge.

5 out of 5 stars THE BOOK TO END IGNORANCE AND SPREAD ENLIGHTENMENT.......2007-01-03

This is the most helpful book l have ever read in my life. lt should be mandatory reading for every human. lt will make you see who you really are, not judge others and also look at things from others perspectives, heal any parts that need to be healed, and make you a stronger, better person- all around. lts the first step toward enlightenment. lt will change your life. lt can change people. l wouldnt be who l am today if someone hadnt gave me this book. lt will make you an authentic person who takes pride in who you are. lts the tool for reaching well being, which is a euphoric feeling, and makes a perfect gift for anyone who is feeling any discontent with their life, theirself, or others. ld also recommend 'finding your own north star' by martha beck.

2 out of 5 stars I couldn't quite understand this book.......2007-08-24

I couldn't quite understand this book maybe because it was too dark. Maybe someday down the road I will re-read this book again and get some understanding out of it but as for today I cannot make heads or tails of it.

5 out of 5 stars A little book with a big message.......2007-06-27

Most reference books are large. This one, even with all of the information packed inside, is instead, rather small. In doing the work of owning your own shadow, "what is the purpose of my life?" is a question that can be discovered. Paired with Johnson's "Innerwork," readers can learn to be in touch with and find meaning in the deeper regions of the psyche. To be able to map out a life for oneself amidst the rushing pace and excrement of the sewer that can pass for as life can offer hope to readers who want more as we begin excavating the gold in our own shadows.

2 out of 5 stars A lot of padding.......2007-06-27

I found this book over simplistic. I don't know who Robert Johnson is writing for but from this book I would guess it was for those with learning difficulties. He repeats his points over and over again, basically I think the actual content of this book could be covered in a 5 pages rather than 118. I guess he does have to spread out the plugs he gives for his other books.

3 out of 5 stars Promotes Acceptance, a Bit Too Long.......2007-06-07

I liked the principle that when I grow fast or experience great excitement, some part of me may experience a rebound. It gave a context for looking more fully at some of my patterns. However, the more I live in acceptance of whatever I experience without making an identify for myself out of it, the less this applies. And, the "rebound" is not an unavoidable part of anything good.

4 out of 5 stars A simple and basic explanation of the shadow.......2006-12-01

This book is a fairly light read at 118 pages and serves as a good general outline of the concept of shadow. The brevity of it is one of its strengths because you finish it quickly and are not intimidated to re-read it if you felt like you missed something. I found myself going back to fill in the gaps of my preliminary reading and caught many more missed insights than I had expected. Brief, but chocked full of gold.

    Book Description

Everyone knows it, everyone pretends not to know it, everyone sincerely believes it's not true ©¤ everyone knows it really is true. The romantic feelings don't last. Sooner or later, partners become judgmental, fearful, critical, withdrawn, controlling, dependent, overbearing, angry, rejecting¡ªwhich really means they become fully themselves, rather than showing only the pretty parts. But these darker feelings bring havoc to romance.

Successful authors Douglas and Naomi Moseley expand their theme of the "dirty little secret" of romance and relationship in their newest book, updating their knowledge of relationships. How to deal with this inevitable tarnishing of romantic luster? Therapists Douglas and Naomi Moseley suggest some practical, straightforward answers in their masterful new book. The Shadow Side of Intimate Relationships rejects the notion that the end of romance means failure. Rather, the authors say, the romantic phase inevitably ends, but it can be superseded by a profound experience of the passionate, ongoing love that makes an adult relationship truly worthwhile.

The secret of success is found in the partners' being aware and truthful in their discovering and acknowledging the gritty truth of each other's hidden aspects: the insecure, fearful little girl and the insecure, fearful little boy who live inside adult bodies and control the adults' behavior. The inner little boy who wants mommy and acts like daddy and an inner little girl who wants daddy and acts like mommy. These emotionally young, power-hungry, control-seeking inner children will do anything to win, regardless of the cost.

These subpersonalities, declare the Moseleys, are not to be damned or expunged. Rather, as parts of the whole human being, they need to be recognized and acknowledged. When they are not acknowledged when they operate unconsciously they are certain to be destructive.

The Shadow Side of Intimate Relationships gives special attention to sexuality and anger, detailing the connection between chronically unexpressed feelings and failed sexual intimacy, and explaining the remarkable healing value found in honest expressions of anger. It also describes, in a significant contribution to the current dialogue on child abuse, what occurs when two emotionally immature partners have children, and how, tragically, the seeds of continuing dysfunction are planted in those children.

This is a book for grown-ups, to be avoided by those who are afraid of themselves, to be eagerly embraced by all who wish to explore the deep, healing truths of life with an adult partner in intimate relationship.

5 out of 5 stars Read if you are ready!.......2003-02-12

This is an absolutely excellent book about what is truly going on in relationships! The author's will probably tell you what you don't want to hear about yourself, but if you are ready to face it, this book will take you to another life. This book makes us face how our own insecurities and inferiorities are having a destructive influence on our relationships. It forces us to change for the better. If you like this book, you will also like "Rhythm, Relationships, and Transcendence" by Toru Sato. It is a great book on a similar topic but explained from a different perspective. I recommend both of them highly!

    5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2001-05-03

My partner and I were stuck. After 2 years together we seemed to be at a crisis in our relationship, and we didn't know whether to get married or split up. Overall we had a GREAT relationship, but things had gotten weird lately. I'd been critical, he'd been withdrawn. What was going on? This book jumped out at me from the amazon.com web site, so I got it and read it in about a week. It was an eye-opener. So many times I recognized myself in these patterns of behavior (or, if I didn't see myself, I saw the behaviors told to me by friends who'd been in failed relationships.) I've read a lot of self-help books, and this is among the best. Clear, well-organized, concise ideas with just the right number of case studies & examples. If you're having trouble in your relationships, maybe not even "big" trouble, just nagging kinds of things.... you will be amazed by the TRUTH of these ideas & observations about relationships. (Same authors have also written "How to Make Your Second Marriage a First-Class Success" which I also recommend.)

5 out of 5 stars No light possible without the shadow..........2000-08-26

What a timely book! It exposes the reality of human connection over the fantasy. And how long can the fantasy last? Powerful truth for those looking to last...as couples and as individuals in our rough and tumble world...

5 out of 5 stars Essential for anyone who wants to sustain a relationship.......2000-08-21

This is an essential book for anyone who wants to sustain an intimate relationship over a long period of time. How many of us in a relationship feel we already know what the other person is thinking or feeling? Conversation becomes a series of set pieces. The Shadow Side of Intimate Relationships explains in jargon-free prose why and how we all get trapped in a particular communication paradigm. Moreover it provides the tools for exploring ways to break free of those traps, both in the way we speak to our intimate partner and the way in which we interact with each other. Doug and Naomi Moseley focus on what each of us as an individual can do for ourselves to understand why we act and react the way we do. These tools can then be applied as instruments to change our individual behavior. For me this book was like a bolt of lightning, illuminating and energizing. It has my highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars This book will truly move you - I challenge you to read it!.......2000-08-15

Have you ever wondered why you cannot find the perfect partner or had a relationship that was really close but just not enough? Have you ever just felt "stuck"? Well, then this book is for you. I caution you though - it will be painful at first but hang in there and you will reap a much bigger reward than those "feel-good" books.

This is not a "relationship recipe" book. It will not tell you how to find the perfect partner. It will not validate your childlike views and beliefs about the "other" person in your relationship. This book will not point the finger at your partner's flaws - in fact, it is not about your partner at all - it is about you!

This book is a magnifying glass - you will discover things about yourself that will make you squirm and leave you speechless. This book is a mirror - you will laugh at the silly behaviors of the people in the examples and then feel the tears well up when you see your own reflection. This book is a bright light - you will see what has been in your dark places since childhood and finally understand what makes "you" who "you" are. This book is a helping hand - you will feel liberated from the burden of your humanness.

If you are mature enough and open minded enough and fully committed then this book will help you find the secret to "your" happiness. Once there, you will be ready for the next step - a fulfilling, passionate and juicy relationship. Your partner will need the benefits of this book as well and together you can build something truly beautiful. Luckily, this really requires more courage than effort.

    3 out of 5 stars interesting.......2007-06-08

I gave this 3 stars just for being different. Slightly more "academic" than I expected, but very interesting.

    5 out of 5 stars Thoughtful & challenging.......2006-02-23

Like all of John Sanford's books, this one combines a Jungian approach with a Christian one ... but not the cut-and-dried, live-by-rote Christianity that shuts down thought & exploration. Sanford isn't interested in comfirming the mindset (or rut) of the unquestioning & self-satisfied Christian. He calls for a living faith, one which examines & challenges the inner being of the individual.

Here he delves into the question of Evil: what is it, really? And how do we cope with it? Refusing to take the easy route of placing it all Out There Somewhere, he explains the need to face the darkness within ourselves -- and more, to accept it as part of ourselves, to learn from it, to integrate it into our lives & so lessen its power over us.

This won't be a book for those who believe in safety, or in living by dogma & authority. It places the responsibility for understanding Evil & coming to terms with it squarely in our hands alone. It requires that we question what we've been taught, what we've believed, in order to come to a living, personally meaningful truth. For those willing to walk this more difficult path, the rewards will be great. Highly recommended!

I found this book compelling. It was hard to put it down. It really gets into the idea of the shadow in a way I have not seen before.
    I whole-heartedly recommend this book!

John Sanford brilliantly crafts a study on the nature of evil in our world. Instead of being preachy and trite, he make valuable points about the importance of understanding the origins of evil in a detached manner.
I feel the approach to understanding evil is a necessary and healthy one. We must all see our shadow side and understand that evil in not something we need fear but attempt to understand and analyze.
Powerful and helpful, Sanford's ideas are conveyed in a basic yet deep manner. I highly recommend this book.
It will help the reader to understand others and themselves and the evil which is always with us in our world.

    Book Description

ountaineers speak and write lyrically about risk; with-out it, they say, there would be none of the self-knowl-edge that reputedly comes from pushing life to its extreme edges. Excluded from that self-knowledge are the voices of those left behind: the parents, spouses, children, and loved ones who until now have maintained the code of silence about the dark side of adventure. In Where the Mountain Casts Its Shadow, Maria Coffey goes beyond the typical climbing book to question the reasons why men and women give their lives to the mountains, and reveal the consequences of loving people who pursue such risk. Many of the world's top climbers-or their widows and families-offer intimate perspectives on adventure and its costly aftermath, including Jim Wickwire, Conrad Anker, Lynn Hill, Joe Simpson, Chris Bonington, Ed Viesturs, Anatoli Boukreev, Alex Lowe, and others. The result is a powerful, affecting, and important book that strips the romance from adventure and returns it to the human realm.

    4 out of 5 stars Darwin rules.......2004-04-20

I loved this book, but probably not for the reasons of most other readers. It reminded me of the Darwin Rules website and books celebrating the ways in which people find to remove themselves from the gene pool.
Surely this applies to mountaineers! This is my conclusion after reading Maria Coffey's engaging book. She relates harrowing tale after harrowing tale in which these absurd risk takers try again and again to kill themselves. Eventually they all seem to succeded.
It becomes hilarious after about the fourth chapter.
Coffey does not try to make us feel sorry for those left behind. This is a wise ploy as it would only soften the impact of what she has to say, which is that these people cannot be helped, but perhaps understood.

5 out of 5 stars Asks all the right questions.......2004-04-04

A terrific successor to Fragile Edge by the same author. That book was a personal journey - a quest for answers - followed by the author after the death of her famous mountain climber boyfriend on the slopes of Everest.

This book looks at the effect of following this most dangerous of passions on the partners left behind and some who sometimes accompany their loved ones. Even more interestingly, Maria Coffey looks at the point of views of those who have no choice in their relationships with those whose addiction seems as self-serving and as inevitable as any other addiction - parents and children.

I really liked Coffey's earlier book, and I recommend this one as much. I believe she has matured as a writer as well. She has the knack of addressing very large picture issues yet not losing sight of the personal and `small moments'.

Some of the personal testimonies about coming to terms with loss and dealing with grief are true not only for losses under such circumstances, but there are some universal truths particularly for anyone who has had to deal with death and the "loss of a future", rather than a mere celebration of a life fulfilled (as many older person funerals have become in my culture in recent years).

An understated but important subtext for me is what this has to say about gender relations. It is no accident that most of those off risking their lives, and the fur=tures of those around them are male. Ms Coffey does touch on this, and especially the unusual circumstance of women with children who still pursue the apex of whatever mass of rock and ice they have their heart set on. However, she never table thumps an agenda . . . you are lft to ponder your own conclusions.

A remarkable achievement. That Ms Coffey has the confidence of so many associated with the pursuit is a testament to her insight and empathy.

I rate this alongside Ed Douglas's book "Chomolungma Sings The Blues" as my favourite books discussing ethical and spititual concerns about mountaineering.

5 out of 5 stars powerful thoughts on unanswerable questions.......2004-03-13

Losing a friend or loved one is never an easy process, but it becomes even more tangled when they leave for a mountain adventure and never return. I first experienced this in the early 70's when 3 close friends were killed while attempting Mt. Elias in Canada. Maria Coffey examines how climbers and their families and friends cope with the devastating losses that shadow this sport.
She begins with a search for why people climb in the first place, and in particular why they continue after close calls; without becoming banal, she quotes Jim Wickwire, "One of the addictive aspects of climbing is that it allows you to be in the present moment in ways that are impossible in ordinary life". Similar thoughts come from Csikszentmihalyi's concept of 'flow' - which finds that the "enjoyment of risk comes not from the danger itself but from managing it, from the sense of exercising control in difficult situations." And then, there's the ultimate mountaineering existential futility of Camus' Sisyphus facing an "unspeakable penalty in which the whole being is exerted toward accomplishing nothing... Each atom of that stone , each mineral flake of that night filled mountain, in itself forms a world. The struggle itself toward the heights is enough to fill a man's heart".
The bulk of this powerful book interviews the survivors and comrades of lost climbers. At times, its difficult to read, but the feelings expressed range from acceptance to anger and denial. In most cases, there is a community of shared experience and values. Whether you're an active climber or arm chair mountaineer this book gives a much needed balance to the hyberbolic tales of expedition climbing. And for those of us who have lost people to the mountains it offers, not comfort, but a stoic acceptance.

5 out of 5 stars A much-needed exploration of the price paid by some.......2004-02-22

My friend Arlene Blum (Anapurna: A Woman's Place) climbed in the Himalayas and elsewhere and lived to tell the tale. She now leads treks into the world's remote and wild regions, but she once rendered me speechless with her offhand reply to my horror at one hair-raising tale she told of crossing an ice bridge about a million miles up a some scary mountain.
"Why on earth would you do that?" I had asked, when I recovered my voice. And another unspoken question hung right behind the first: Having done it once and survived, why on God's green earth would you do it again? And again, and again.
"Oh, it's not really dangerous," and she poured me another cup of tea.
    Not dangerous. Yeah, right.
Arlene had already lost a lover and several friends to accidents in high places, and others have died cold and lonely deaths since then. Not dangerous? I mean, what??
But there will still be those who MUST climb mountains. Some of them will die, and their survivors often are quoted as saying, "He died doing what he loved best," or the feminine equivalent. Maria Coffey's book, Where the Mountain Casts Its Shadow," chronicles the naked underbelly of the experience of this particular kind of loss. It looks behind the public quotes into the hearts and bleeding souls of the survivors, and I believe it's a story whose exposure is long overdue. The personal costs of extreme adventure are too often dismissed for the thrill of reading about the adventures themselves. Coffey handles with grace and delicacy the stories of wives, husbands, lovers, friends, and children left behind my someone who just had to climb yet one more mountain - for reasons the rest of us armchair travelers can't even begin to imagine.

5 out of 5 stars Into the dark with a flashlight.......2004-02-07

Coffey is to be applauded for asking the hard questions about the climbing game. In my experience, mountaineers too often pay lip service to the death toll in the hills, regardless of their own struggles with grief and fear. I think it's because grief and fear become so tied up together for a high-altitude climber of any enduring ambition, it becomes very difficult for them to honestly talk about the issues -- because it's all very close to the surface and uncomfortable. Coffey's exploration, filtered through her own grief, is compelling but not complete. What's missing is that internal monologue where grief and fear are seen to be in starkest play. I certainly recommend Coffey's book, but I would urge you to look at the new book by Peter Hillary, `In The Ghost Country', to complete the picture of the dark side. There you'll enter Hillary's mind and find the grief and fear of the game working there for all to see, a lifetime of horror playing out in his head on a walk to the South Pole. I love both books.

5 out of 5 stars This book has some powerful joo-joo behind it!.......1998-12-11

There's something about the way this book reads that opens up something in your mind. I always felt like I was inferior to everyone in some way or another. I always felt guilty about how I've handled things in the past. But somehow this book shifted things for me big-time!

After reading this book, I felt relieved! I wasn't such a bad person after all! I just got beat up in life. I reacted to what my circumstances were the way any human being would. All those tough facades I put up around myself all my life were covering up a really sweet person that I could never let anyone see. Not even I could see it!

Breese's book has helped me to make sense of dysfunctional people, including myself. Human beings seem to have made dysfunction an artform. But so is transformation, eh?

Check this book out! It changed me!

    Book Description

Dr. Elizabeth Barnes has devoted her heart and soul to medical research...at the expense of love. Until a detective contacts her about a recent wave of homicides, which may have resulted from her new anti-depressant. Now, this intense, driven cop may be the only one who can stop the killings-and save her from the dark side.

3 out of 5 stars (really 2.5 stars) Dull romantic suspense.......2007-03-10

Adam Boedecker is a homicide detective on leave after taking a bullet to the brain three years earlier. Losing his wife to his best friend was bad enough, but his brother is discovered dead in a murder-suicide and he isn't allowed in on the investigation. After crashing the crime scene and discovering a line of investigation the detectives are not pursuing, he finds himself wondering if a medication that Michael was taking for depression might not have contributed to the deaths.

Valazine was developed and tested by Dr. Elizabeth "Eli" Barnes, whose childhood trauma forged the career path she chose. She thinks the disheveled detective is nuts when he crashes her office with allegations that the drug was responsible not only for the deaths in his family, but several others. As guilt takes over and she feels compelled to look into the raw test data with Adam, Eli finds her life, career and heart in jeopardy. Is it a coincidence, or did they unleash a monster of a drug on the public?

With an interesting plot, the story for the most part falls flat and at times just goes on and on. At only 385 pages, it feels more like a grueling 585 pages and was hard to remain focused with all the detail and introspection. Despite its length, it feels unfinished (or perhaps underdeveloped). The romance lacks chemistry and is almost non-existent - and pretty late in the story. Missing from the action is the ex-wife who betrayed Adam; she's mentioned only in passing. It doesn't take a genius to figure out who is a bad guy in this predictable story; it's an okay story - definitely not one up to repeated scrutiny. Recommended only to fans of the author, who has written much better.

4 out of 5 stars Has it all.......2005-10-01

I love Linda Castillo and I think she is a great author. This book keeps you guessing, like all her books. It's hard to put the book down. I think anyone who has a chance to read one of Linda Castillo's books will fall in love with her writing.

4 out of 5 stars very enjotable book.......2005-09-01

This story really kept me interested. very likeable characters, I recommend this book . The only reason I only gave it 4 stars, is that it lagged a bit toward the end and I was able to guess who the bad guy was.

    2 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time&money.......2004-10-31

Actually, I have just checked some other reviews and I have been wondering whether I read the same book. I wasted too much time reading this novel and have not understood yet what the author was thinking? This one was my first from Linda Castillo, and I was eager to read it since the story seemed to me so different.
There are lots of logical and editorial mistakes in the book, after some time I just gave up. I must say that I forced myself to finish it. As I pointed out, the plot was very promising, however page by page became higly predictable. This book is not terrible but I would not recommend it. The chemistry betweeen Dr Eli Barnes and Adam Boedecker seems really forced and almost 3/4 of the book there is nothing regarding that. I also would like to raise some questions if Eli is a real doctor? As far as I know medical doctors should be more clever and cautious. The first half of the book is unnecessarily long and the plot suffers. The villain was an unconvincing one.
I have still lots of questions: What happened to Roth Pharma and Peter Roth, was Kevin really in this play? If so, why he helped in the end? Please Ms. Castillo enlighten us.

In conclusion, save the money and time.

2 out of 5 stars 2.5 stars: Not as good as "Perfect Victim" .......2004-10-01

Linda Castillo's characters in "The Shadow Side" start off looking like they might be interesting. The classic anti-hero: a cop on disability unsure if trusts his own judgment anymore. The Heroine: a brilliant scientist who has devoted her life to her work because of personal tragedy. Neither are looking for love.

But as the book wears on, they stay stagnant and somewhat two-dimensional. I've noticed a lot of repetition when it comes to the thoughts of the characters - especially when it comes to their attraction for one another.

Now the plot is somewhat unique and interesting, though the characters themselves seem to drag it down in the prose.

      Book Description

The Shadow Side of Fieldwork draws attention to typically hidden or unacknowledged aspects of ethnographic research that nevertheless shape knowledge, texts, and methodologies. These are the invisible, unspoken, elusive, and mysterious areas where life and research overlap, private experiences and formal ethnography blur, and research boundaries seem to dissolve.Containing essays by such varied luminaries as Nancy Scheper-Hughes and Vincent Crapanzano, this book penetrates the many shadows in ethnographic field encounters. The authors recount personal and professional challenges that lead them to confront the complex sources or paradoxical nature of their insights. By turning attention to the shadow sides of fieldwork and thoroughly exploring what they find there, the writers, as responsible researchers, hope to deepen confidence in ethnographic knowledge. The Shadow Side of Fieldwork helps students and scholars to understand the submerged influences inherent in their research, and is essential reading for anyone involved in ethnographic fieldwork.

Expanded edition! A radical fairy tale for adults to help face the fears that consume us. The Three Little Pigs is a story of your own transformation. Which little pig are you? Who is your wolf? What does it say about your own past, present, future? "This book is excellent." - Marie Louis von Franz.

      Customer Reviews:

      3 out of 5 stars Intriguing.......2002-06-01

This book examines transformation, growth and change through the story of the 3 Little Pigs. It suggest that we must make a radical shift to become one with our bad half in order to understand and overcome it.

The book introduces 2nd pig thinking (not really a change although it looks like it on the surface) as 2nd order change (example: a Presidential election).

It's an intriguing book worth a weekend read.

5 out of 5 stars A simple and powerful framework to support transformation.......1999-06-30

By using a familiar story, Charles Bates makes powerful tools easy to grasp. Pigs Eat Wolves engaged me to the point of rethinking significant decisions in my life and the assumptions on which they are based.

I can see a broader range of choices than prior to reading this book. It's easy to read and well worth the effort.

      5 out of 5 stars A VERY INTERESTING REVELATION.......1998-07-23

I loved this book. I couldn't imagine at first where Bates was going with this old, old story, but I was delighted with the new perspective and the underlying revelation that he brings out of this old tale. This is not a children's story. It is a completely new story to me, and has contributed to my person growth. I think he has skillfully reworked the metaphor of pig and wolf in a language that speaks to the inner self. It goes beyond the old moral of " work hard and you'll be rewarded in the end." According to Bates, whether you work hard or not, life still has some challenges for you, and understanding that will better prepare you to meet them. I think anyone who is consciously on the path to person growth will appreciate this story. It's short and can be read over a weekend. I hope that he will do the same with some of the other Mother Goose tales.

3 out of 5 stars A Stretch of the Imagination.......1998-03-28

Charles Bates pushes the art of an analogy a bit too far. He uses the story of the Three Pigs to symbolize the coming into adulthood and taking on life and facing the evils that can, if not prepared, devour you.
