The plan itself is blissfully simple:
THE PREQUEL: Seven days of adding detox support foods to your diet to prepare your body for the one-day Fast
THE FAST: One day of sipping Gittleman’s “Miracle Juice,” a deliciously spiced mixture of herbs and spices specially designed to stave off hunger, balance blood sugar, boost metabolism, and replenish nutrients (no kidding, the juice is completely delicious)
THE SEQUEL: Three days of reintroducing supportive and immune-boosting foods into your diet to seal in the results

Inside there are recipes to prepare for the fast, shopping lists, and tips for sailing through the fast.
In addition, Ann Louise Gittleman shares the wisdom she’s gained from years of research on health, diet, and nutrition. You’ll find out about hidden toxins found in the environment and in everyday foods, and learn easy steps you can take to live healthier every day.

Good idea, but overpromissing.......2007-09-24
There is one thing that I absolutely agree with Ann Luise - the amount of chemicals that we are exposed to in our daily lives is overwhelming. I think that cleansing our bodies from them ("unchemicalizing ourselves") from time to time is a very good idea.
There are several other authors that pointed to this problem in the past. There are also a few who suggested better or worse cleansing solutions. One author dealing extensively with this topic in her few books is Hulda Clark. Gittleman's Detox Diet is only a good addition to the anthology. I do, however, have a problem with the "eight pounds weight loss in a day" idea. Isn't this just a little over-promising?
My favorite author dealing with this topic is Mikhail Tombak who offers total body cleansing solutions (starting with the liver, via kidney, intestines, bones and joints, and ending with blood) in one of the chapters of his book "Can We Live 150 Year?" At the same time Mr. Tombak does not promise losing weight overnight...
More about detox , than weight loss.......2007-07-13
I'm a big of Ann Gittleman. I have all her Fat Flush books. I think that the information they provide is invaluable. I learned a lot from reading her books. I've had success with this book and the Fat Flush Plan. To be honest, I did not lose the weight that I expected to lose from this detox diet. As one reviewer points out, it takes a lot of other factors to help you lose weight. However, the detoxification that I got was worth more than the extra pounds of weight loss. My actual weight loss came from Fat Flush. But, Fast Track helped to make my liver and colon much healthier. On this detox diet, sometimes it was hard for me to find a food within each of her categories that I liked, but I did my best. I liked the Miracle Juice, and it was easy to prepare. I really didn't think it was that bad. The detox day didn't affect me in any adverse way. I ate the next day, but I wasn't ravenous. To anyone who is thinking about purchasing this book, just know in advance that this book will help you in many ways, but it is a very tough 11 days. Just make sure that you're up to it before you begin. Also know that because it says that you COULD lose up to 8 pounds doesn't mean that you will. All I can tell you is that I enjoyed this book, and I will use it again to detox. Five stars for detoxification!
Not really "One-day" as it claims.......2007-04-25
Having lived in Germany I was already familiar with the idea of quick fasts and fasting groups to cleanse the body and periodically offset weight gain. I haven't tried this one because it seemed pretty complicated and requiring lots of effort, planning and the purchase of special stuff like supplements. I was also pretty put off when I read that there was a highly structured 7-day "prequel" to the detox. One-day huh?
Suprise eating health makes you feel better..........2007-03-29
Long term weight\fitness changes require long term effort.
That being said nothing like a jumpstart, new book, fad diet to get you going.

Customer Reviews:
Confusing and Gimmicky.......2007-09-26
I was just diagnosed with a hypothyroid and I took this book out of the library because of all the great reviews it got here. However, I found the layout of the book confusing and spent more time searching for the pages that pretained to me than actually reading anything! It would have been better if they separated the book into three parts instead of mixing everything up. I was also turned off by the huge plug to use the high-quality vitamins and supplements that they endorse. Not everyone can afford to do that, and may not want to anyway. I wish they concentrated on diet instead of popping pills.
Very informative........2007-08-24
As an avid reader of health related books, I found myself quickly stopping so I could grab a pen and mark what I was reading. Pretty soon I realized that I was filling every page with lines! Anyone in search of an answer to the question: "what has happened to me?" should order this book. This book isn't pushing a specific theory down anyone's throat, but the writers ARE acknowledging the fact that though we have more medicine nowadays, we have less health. In recognizing this fact, Richard and Karilee Shames are on a mission to help the patient help themselves. It goes without saying that the person who is ill must often do a lot of work on their own before they will find an answer to their pain and problems. This book is highly recommended. Karen Steward, author of Doctors: Bound By Secrecy? Victims: Bound By Pain!
This book can Save Your Life!.......2007-08-07
I felt so tired, draggy and energyless until a friend sent me this book and I followed the directions! The test in the book showed me that I had adrenal fatigue and low functioning thyroid. I sent for the test and it verified what I had found out from the test in the book. I started the supplements that Dr. Shames recommended in the book. An appointment with him a month later verified the test, and he told me that I was on the right track. Two months later, I feel like a different person. Thank you, Dr. Shames! I recommend this book to anyone not feeling great!
Ordinary lab tests do not identify these difficulties. Buy the book TODAY!
Feeling Fat, Fuzzy or Frazzled.......2007-07-08
Every woman over the age of 40 should read this book. It is easy to read and very informative. If you are tired of feeling anxious, tired, bloated, depressed, etc. then this is the right book for you.
Great Book!.......2007-06-09
This is an excellent book. I have read most of the books on the market about thyroid problems and The Shames are really tuned in to the problems we have. It has good suggestions and I highly recommend adding this one to your personal library. I could tell within a week that the suggestions they made would help.

Fitness guru Denise Austin helps you "zero in on your personal trouble spots" while increasing metabolism with this 6-week exercise and eating program. Her formula includes toning workouts that target the waist, thighs, abs, buttocks, hip, lower back, and upper arms; regular walking and stretching; and eating strategies (not dieting). Her tips are refreshingly sensible: Avoid chronic dieting (it hurts your health and makes you fatter), stretch to decrease stress, fill up on high-fiber foods, eat a balanced diet, build muscle to increase calorie-burning, and walk almost every day. Austin's clearly illustrated and varied exercises use body weight, dumbbells, resistance bands, or a stability ball. A sample exercise schedule takes 15 to 60 minutes a day. For especially busy days, she offers a series of exercises that work two or more muscle groups at once. Austin's "Shrink-Fat Eating Plan" emphasizes portion control, 1,400 to 1,800 calories, and a nutritional breakdown of 24 percent "good" fat, 20 percent protein, and 56 percent high-quality carbs. Whether you just want a foundation to get started or you need a structured, daily program (including menu plans, shopping lists, and daily logs), you can find it here. Profiles of happy and successful followers of the program add interest. Highly recommended. --Joan Price

Practical and educating........2006-03-24
I found this book to be helpful in my understanding of the female body.Given that I work with many female executives,I found this information to be very useful in designing my clients' workouts-especially the female body composition.
I liked the fact that the book showed me ways of getting the most out of the block of time I have for my clients. Most of them come in over lunch hour to train, the gyms are packed and there is no time to think and search. This book give me insights on how to save and maximize on the time that I have, and my clients really appreciate it.
Shrink Your Female Fat Zones: Lose Pounds and Inches--Fast!--From Your Belly, Hips, Thighs, and More.......2006-03-02
If you want a book to give you lessons on what exercises are the best for you and a few meals to use this book may be for you. I found that you can get the same exercises listed in most videos and dvd's that denise austin has previously released. Also, the meals she gives you might work if you were just going to make 2-servings, they don't always work as well when increased for a family.
Only good for an absolute beginner.......2006-02-05
If you know ANYTHING about eating properly already, don't purchase this book. This book is meant for beginners only. Denise must have been paid by the companies that produce the foods she suggests, because if you don't have access to the specific foods and types she recommends, there are no alternatives. The workout is also completely basic and rudimentary and focussed towards those that have NEVER worked out before, or possibly the elderly. I had high hopes for this book but was completely let down and actually returned it.
I was skeptical, but it really works!.......2005-11-23
I'm the first to admit that dieting makes me grouchy. Additionally, I am not a morning person, so the idea of getting up early and power-walking for 30 minutes four times a week seemed like Chinese water torture. But I had a formal dress to get into, and I needed drastic measures. So I read the book, and gradually incorporated the elements of the plan into my daily routine. I started with the meal plans. It was an eye-opener to see what a true portion should be, and I could see in my food journal all the things I was putting in my mouth every day. Next week, I started the walking. After a week I really started to enjoy it! I have two kids under 6, and I found I relished the quiet time to myself out on the roads in the morning. After that, I started the weight workouts. I saw results in the first month of following all of the advice. The motivational stuff seemed too perky in the beginning, but around week 6, when I started to get major chocolate cravings, I just kept thinking about what she said about halfway through the book. "Nothing tastes as good as being fit feels." Thirteen weeks later, I am 19 pounds thinner, and the formal I was trying to get into was a little loose! Everyone compliments me on how great I look. If you are really serious about getting into shape and fitting into your clothes, this is the book (and plan) for you.
Book Description
She found the body. Again. Sensing a pattern?
Ariadne Evans swore her sleuthing days were over after her very own knitting shop became a crime scene a few months back. But she hadn't anticipated that the Freeport Wool and Yarn Festival would become the site of another murder -- with hers truly as a prime suspect. Since Ari was the one to find the body of Felicia Barr -- the much detested and influential owner of Knit It Up magazine -- with a knitting needle stuck in her back, the cops are needling Ari for answers. In a stitch, Ari dons her hand-knit detective cap and helps her on-and-off boyfriend, Detective Josh Pierce, untangle the day's events and solve a very woolly crime -- before the killer strikes again....

Reap what you sew.......2007-09-17
Second and hopefully not last book in Kruger's Knitting Series. Ari and her friend Diane are participants in the Freeport Wool and Yarn Festival when suddenly in the middle of a downpour a body literally falls into Ari's arms. And this isn't just any body, this is Felicia Barr, the much disliked owner of Knit it up!, a magazine that could either make or break a knitwear designer.
Fun & Fast-Paced.......2007-08-24
Having been to a wool festival in Colorado -- and going to another one in the Fall -- I could imagine the entire setting in my mind ! The characters were "real" and it made me chuckle that they all had their knitting with them (and multiple projects !) -- something another knitter can appreciate.
I enjoyed the setting and the story -- and how it was concluded. It was a quick read -- but one that I totally enjoyed !
Very entertaining.......2007-07-23
As an avid knitter and reader, I love reading books that include knitting or fiber related events. I love the wool festival setting of this mystery. Kruger's description of the wool festival rings true, as does her description of designing and the knitting world.
I enjoyed the second book in her series, and look forward to the next as well.
a fine and delightful cozy .......2007-06-11
Ariadne "Ari" Evans, the owner of Adriane's Web, is a vendor in the Freeport Yarn and Wool Festival; a small event in Massachusetts. Thus she is stunned to see Felicia Barr, owner-editor of the prestigious Knit It Up! Magazine, accompanied by her assistant Debbie Petrino attend this minor show. Also there is Beth Morley, Felicia's former assistant who she fired. The two women have a very public argument with threats from both sides and plenty of witnesses.
Although Ari is unafraid of Felicia, most of the vendors fear her because she has the power to destroy their careers; one of them resents her as she blames her for not obtaining a position she coveted due to Felicia's criticism of her designs. When Ari goes for coffee, she finds an even more powerful jolt when she finds a dying Felicia stabbed with a knitting needle. Ari realizes instantly that there are a myriad of suspects with strong motives including the latest heir apparent Debbie. A police detective asks Ari, who has a reputation for solving crimes, to help investigate the homicide as she has a rapport with most of the attendees and knows which questions to ask.
Mary Kruger's exciting second mystery flows smoothly one stitch at a time making it easy for the audience to follow the whodunit investigation. The tale is told by Ari for the most part although others heavily involved in the case give their first person viewpoint too; this enables readers to understand motives as a frustrated crowd of vendors feel fear as they are crushed under the thumb of a power yielder and after her death there are feelings of relief. Thus like Ari the reader has plenty of suspects to choose from. Although why the police would request a civilian amateur sleuth to help them beyond advice on knitting seems a stretch, KNIT FAST, DIE YOUNG is a fine and delightful cozy that will appeal to the audience who prefer no blood and no gore.
Harriet Klausner
Another cozy mystery........2007-06-10
This is my first book by Mary Kruger. I will be looking for more of her books. It takes place in Massachusetts, during a yarn festival in some drafty old barns. Well written with a twist at the end I wasn't expecting. A good mystery like this one does not have to have gory details to be enjoyable. Like an old black and white movie, it doesn't need to be in color or show all the details of a crime to be good.

A company that knows their stuff. www.sewfastseweasy.com.......2007-10-09
So I bought this book for my girlfriend who wanted to learn to sew after becoming obsessed with project runway. After receiving the book I did a little research on the company. They offer sewing classes to the public in New York City and have been for the past 15 years. I found that they had online video classes and my girlfriend took the men's underwear video. She wont stop making me briefs and I love it. She also made some lacy tanga panties for herself from another one of their videos. Thank you Sew fast Sew easy!!
Totally Tubular.......2007-10-08
This book is radical. My mom got me a couple sewing books. This is by far my fav. The other she got me, "sewing for dummies" was boring and didn't include patterns to work on. This book taught me a lot and I moved on to the Rip It! book which I also love. Do the skirt pattern and add a belt, it's so hot right now. I love wearing the clothes I've made to school. You won't be dissapointed
So many books to choose from.......2007-09-26
I finally made a decision on a book and I am very happy that I chose this one. It has been easy to follow where other sewing books make learning complicated. The patterns were fun and now I have new pillows for my couch and bed and with christams coming up, they'll be perfect gifts. I also liked the Rip It! book and for more advanced sewing check out A fashion guide to sewing.

love sewing!.......2007-09-25
I'm learning to sew and have found the most fabulous books. This happens to be my favorite. It's no B.S. Other books I have show how to construct garments but this book is really good at explaining how to do more of the basic sewing skills. I didn't know that there was a certain way of cutting fabric out so that the garment will fit properly. You have to crawl before you can run and this book will get you through crawling and walking and into running. I'm a big fan of Sew Fast Sew Easy. Here are some other books that have been realy helpful:

Highly Recomended.......2007-09-18
My friend who is a fashion designer highly recomended this book to help get me sewing and he was right on with it. This book has been great in helping me get comfortable with my machine and to understand how to read and lay patterns. I enjoyed sewing the projects in this book as well. They weren't too hard to understand and it helped give me the confidence to sew and it wasn't frustrating so I wanted to keep sewing and find new projects to work on. I would recomend this book to anyone that wants a relaxing and easy time learning to sew. I'm also going to check out the Rip It! book too for more tailoring tips and creative project ideas.

Book Description
Rona Berg knows that sometimes women have dry skin. Or tired eyes. Or limp hair. Or a pimple. And as a beauty expert, she knows exactly what to do about it. Drawing on years of covering the beauty industry, working behind the scenes at fashion shows, fixing actresses’ and models’ beauty meltdowns, and learning insider information from hundreds of consultants and make-up artists, Ms. Berg—author of
Beauty: The New Basics, with 122,000 copies in print—offers up the best 1,000 tried-and-true tips.
Indexed by problem and solution,
Fast Beauty is indispensable, filled with the kinds of advice, ideas, and help that sell millions of women’s magazines a month. Spa tips. Anti-stress tips. The “20-second face,” “the two-minute face,” the “five-minute face.” Innovative remedies: Rub olive oil into dry cuticles to soften them; use honey to get rid of a pimple overnight; to tighten the face temporarily, apply tomato juice (preferably fresh-squeezed) for ten minutes, and for the reverse—if your face is tight from too much sun—apply plain yogurt to the skin and leave on for ten minutes. A full chapter shows how to solve beauty pitfalls caused by hormones at all stages of life; another deals with various problems caused by working out. And for every busy businesswoman, it tells what quick fix to use when heading into an important meeting straight off the red-eye—or heading straight from the office out on a blind date.

Excellent bathroom reader.......2007-08-30
This book has so many useful tips on how to take care of your body. I learned several new tricks and shortcuts that I use daily. I liked that I didnt have to read this book from cover to cover, I could just open it and read whatever I wanted. A must buy for anyone looking for an easy to read beauty book.
Great book with unusual NEW tips!.......2007-07-02
I bought that "Confessions of a Beauty Editor" book by the editor of Allure magazine, expecting it to be full of beauty secrets and tips. After a glimpse through the pages, I sent it right the hell back to Amazon. What a WASTE of money. Apparently the author feels "putting on moisturizer before your foundation to help it slide on more evenly" is a great tip. Yeah. Maybe if you're 15 and have never worn makeup before in your life... ? No, even then it's still common sense. Ahem. THIS book contains the beauty tips and secrets I was looking for! Thank you, Rona Berg. I've subscribed to beauty magazines for years and I own nearly every Makeup Tips book ever published, so I know the basics. While there are a few "duh" moments in this one, the good advice far outweighs the re-runs, and I came across page after page of tips that I'd never heard before. Well worth the money, unlike SOME other books...
AMAZING.......2007-06-29
I love this book. It has fixes for everything. I searched for TONS of books and read millions of reviews and I finally bit the bullet and pick this one and I'm pleased I did.
Outstanding Book.......2006-12-25
This book is a find. There are so many useful tips on each page that it is worthy of a spot on your bookshelf. Have you ever read a beauty tip in a magazine and it made a significant difference for you? This book is 1000 of those tips in between a front and back cover. You will learn little things that make a difference like what the word "natural" means in the cosmetic world, and what to do if the tip of your wax pencils keep breaking off when you sharpen them. There is an idea on how to apply perfume and even recipes to mix up some of your own beauty products in your own kitchen. It is also an excellent gift for your gal pals, if you ever need to come up with a useful gift for someone special. This book is outstanding and worth the price in what you will gain in beauty tips.
Great Book With Great Tips.......2006-01-30

I have used several of her tips and I recommend this book to anyone that likes beauty books. I can't wait until she publishes her next book. Get this book now!!!!

Slow Start .......2007-06-24
While I found it a bit difficult to relate to the main character, Christy, I liked the book. Perhaps it's that I'm neither an Olympic champion or a CEO, but she seemed like a paper doll or caricature of a character, especially in the beginning - but I think that was what the author intended. I initially didn't know if I'd finish the book, but it eventually drew me in.
The "voice" I most enjoyed was that of Renata. The storyline about Renata gave the book the humor, the richness and the emotional draw that made the book more engaging and appealing.
Don't waste your time.......2007-05-14
Very stereotypical and not worth the time. There are better books out there, even for chick lit.
What Fun!.......2007-04-26
I so enjoyed Karen Quinn's WIFE IN THE FAST LANE. The characters were so delightful AND memorable. With the quirky, unexpected ending, I found the story delicious and screaming for a screenplay. I would love to see these characters in a major film. Especially the funny little critter at the end...read the book....you'll see!
Deeply superficial.......2007-04-24
This book--which someone gave me--is so shallow it's a wonder it can maintain a 3-dimensional presence on a bookshelf.
Another Great Read!!!.......2007-04-04
How fun was this book!!!! I started and could not put it down - pulled an all nighter just to find out the ending. Love the characters - you could have characters in your life like this!!! If you love Ivy Chronicles you will love this one also. Just can't wait for the next book. Maybe Ivy and Christy can meet in the next one :)

Away Laughing on a Fast Camel review.......2007-04-25
Away Laughing on a Fast Camel is the fifth book in the Georgia Nicholson series. Georgia, a British teenager full of gorgeosity and attitude continues the cunning chronicles that are her diaries, full of red-bottom-osity, love-stricken cats, and a tres mad toddler. On top of all that, Georgia's love interest, the lead singer of the "Stiff Dylans", Robbie, (aka the Sex God) is off to Kiwi-a-go-go land, and Georgia's got the Cosmic Horn for their new singer, Masimo.
Libby, Georgia's toddler sister, is quite literally mad. One minute she's trying to kiss you, the next she's hitting you and calling you "cheeky monkey". You never know what's going to happen with that crazy bugger whether she's snuggling a turnip or running around in the nuddy-pants. I love the absolutely outrageous antics she gets up to, and it's always laugh out loud hilarious.
I totally recommend this book for girls in their teenage years. Some topics may be too awkward for younger girls. I love this book because there's a laugh on every page. Also, it's a great source for outrageous British slang. Georgia is always on a wacky adventure, so you can never put it down or else you will have tres snog withdrawel. This book is fabbity-fab-fab and you won't be able to read it just once!!
True Confessions of Georgia Nicolson is FAB!.......2007-01-20
I love these books. I started getting them on book on tape at the library and I enjoy them sooo much. I really want to get them at the book store so that I can read them over and over again!
Away Laughing on a Fast Camel.......2006-11-30
While S.G.(Robbie) is off in Kiwi-a-gogo,to snog the local sheep, Georgia is left on her all aloney, on her owney! But never fear, a new, and BETTER S.G. is on his way! And this one has an Italian accent! Eith Georgia, who knows what could go wrong? Oh, yeah! EVERYTHING! With Dave the laugh coaching her along, this is one of the funniest books in the searies!
Another entry in the fabbity-fab life of Georgia Nicolson.......2006-10-29
With the Sex God away in Kiwi-a goo-goo land snogging marsupials and only writing to Georgia about thermal activity, Georgia is fully into her sadosity phase. That is until the new gorgy singer for the Stiff Dylans shows up. Suffering from a flash return of red bottomisity Georgia pulls out all the stops to snare the Sex Meister. Unfortunately this includes having her eyelids accidentally glue together with her boy entrancers at a most inopportune moment. Lucky for Georgia she always can turn to her Master of the Horn instructor, Dave the Laugh for a bit of advice (and a happy round of snogging).
The more I read of Georgia Nicolson's adventures the more I find myself chuckling. I did miss Angus' input a little, but the parts featuring the new little addition to the family in the form of Angus' cross-eyed offspring made up for it. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and am anxious to see what will happen to Georgia when she reaches Hamburger-a-goo-goo land in the next book.
An okay book, not exciting........2006-10-21
Away Laughing on a Fast Camel
By Louise Rennison
Realistic Fiction
This book, Away Laughing on a Fast Camel, is a story about the feelings and thoughts of a girl named Georgia Nicholson, who lives in Britain. She has a crazy family consisting of a mom a dad and a 3-year-old sister. Georgia seems not to get along with her family for the most part, and relies a lot on her friends. The book states all of her feelings toward school, family, friends, and the world. As Georgia grows into adolescence, hormones often take over and make for a funny scene more than once as the story progresses. In this book, Georgia is writing a diary. Diary form fits this story very well because the author can go into more detail about Georgia's feelings than if it was told in 3rd person. The journal entries are entered at completely random times, Georgia might write 10 days in a row, and then not write another for a week or so. That, I think was my only problem with the authors writing style. Because of the randomness of the entry time, if I missed one or two dates, I might think it was September and it would turn out to be November. I wish the author had written in a more clear, organized way. I didn't enjoy this book a ton, but I liked it okay. I feel like the plot is not complex enough to captivate the reader, or grab their attention. In the previous books in this series, a lot went on and a new problem occurred each time. In this novel however, I was often bored and felt like many pages were there just to make the book longer. Over all, I'd give this book, three and a half stars.

Fast Lane to Victory: The Story of Jenny Thompson Jenny Thompson grew up in a working class New England coastal town with a single mom and three older brothers. As her family struggled to make ends meet, Jenny found a bounty of good fortune and success in the swimming pool. The family folklore maintains that Jenny could swim before she could walk. This water baby went on to win eight Olympic Gold medals as one of the fastest female swimmers in the world. Jenny had to deal with some hardships, including wearing a brace for scoliosis and being teased about being so tall and strong. And she did it with her constant positive outlook and rugged determination to succeed. This story lets the young reader know that being competitive is okay for girls and that dreams really do come true.

Great book for young girls.......2007-02-20
Swimming is a sport that attracks so many girls, and this book can help them get a picture of what it means to be a champion. It is an easy read. It reaveals some of the things she struggled with in her life as she grew up. We used this book to write a biography report. The appendix has a list of highlights of Jenny's career, and a history of women's swimming. I also appreciate the "Sports Talk" section that is a spring board for discussing (1) dealing with disappointment, (2)body image, (3) competitive anxiety, (4) benefits of Sports participation for girls, and (5) other general questions about competing in sports.
Disappointing.......2006-10-31
This book is a great idea. Jenny Thompson is a great choice for an inspirational story for young athletes, but the book is sub-par. The artwork is embarrassingly bad, using crude line drawings. Important obstacles are mentioned without fully being explained as to how they impacted Thompson or how she overcame them. Jenny Thompson's is an inspiring story worthy of a better book
Inspiring role model.......2004-02-07
I love this book! It's a great story of how sports can shape your life in a positive way. Swimmers and non-swimmers alike will be inspired by Jenny's story. This great book is now available as an e-book for those of you who can't find a copy of the original printing. You can order here from amazon.com, the isbn is B0001GDOUQ.
How Jenny dealt with the negative peer pressure.......2001-06-09
Fast Lane To Victory is the third in Wish Publishing's outstanding "Anything You Can Do...New Sports Heroes For Girls" series and the story of swim champion Jenny Thompson. Swimming was what Jenny like best, but when her friends at school started to tease her and call her "tomboy" and "Too Tall Thompson", she felt the pressures placed on a lot of young girls to conform to social norms of what was "proper" for girls. Jenny dealt with the negative peer pressure and became so successful as an athlete that she came to be called the "Fastest Swimmer in the World". Also very highly recommended for school and community library collections are the first two volumes in this superbly presented and inspiring sports oriented series for girls: A Drive To Win: The Story Of Nancy Lieberman (40-8, ...) and Sword Of A Champion: The Story Of Sharon Monplaisir (39-4, ...).

Get over it!.......2006-05-01
There is a lot of hype surrounding this book. My professors seem to love it, though I do not know why. This book is based on totally fallacious reasoning and was written by a mediocre intellect. Let me explain. Bynum argues that medieval women like Catherine of Siena were not anorexic because anorexics today supposedly starve themselves for the sake of appearance. She does not seem to understand that anorexia is a disease; it is not about appearance not matter what sufferers of the disease my say is their inspiration. Ask any psychiatrist. Historians should realize that diseases exist whether or not people of the past put names to them or understood them. As tuberculosis remains tuberculosis over the years (not counting mutations and such), so do mental illness like anorexia. So, it is entirely possible that medieval women suffered from anorexia as easily as women of the present. I, personally, suffer from eating disorders and spent a good part of my life self-mutilating through cutting and burning, etc. I have been put in front of many therapists, so I think I know what I'm talking about when I say that, no matter the trigger, such things are diseases. This means that medieval women had religious piety as the concentration point of their eating problems, not that their affliction was that different from the anorexic of today.
Then, Bynum goes on and on to illustrate how women like Catherine of Siena associated food and Christ's body with the female body. But, we're not supposed to think of causing bodily suffering and the refusal to eat are a rejection of the female body! Why not?! Let's see... If the female body is food, the rejecting food does not symbolize a rejection of the female body. Women were suffering like Christ, right? Well, it was the female side of Christ that suffered. Why was it Christ's female side that had to be mutilated for the world to be saved? Instead of putzing around trying to make a name for yourself, why not answer the question of why the female body must be mutilated and made to suffer in order to gain holiness. She bases this part of her argument on the fact that many priests and religious officials had begun to support women more during the time of Catherine of Siena and others. Whatever. Today, there are all sorts of anti-anorexia influences, and have they stopped the disease? No! At best, they may have made some women and men to seek help for their problems. Besides, the Church still taught that the body of woman was the vehicle through which sin entered the world, no matter what else they may have been saying. And, there are ALWAYS people who resist change and prefer the "old ways" for many reasons, especially because the "old way" is comfortable to them. Also, women's spirtuality is not necessarily the same as Church teaching. While the Church definitely influenced spirituality, there is more than enough evidence that individual communities and persons formed their own traditions according to their needs. So, if a woman wants to become holy, what's going to influence her the most? Years of tradition and cultural mores as well as her own conscience, or priests who may or may not have preached some new material (mainly aimed at women who were wives and mothers, not women seeking a religious life).
The reason why Bynum wrote this book was to waste all of our time trying to become a big wig in the world of history. Unfortunately, historians, being mediocre intellects most of the time (and I can say that as a professional historian myself) cannot seem to see straight through it. I've noticed that whatever seems to be the new, happening thing in history tends to get this kind of hype no matter what uninspired trash is produced. Bynum wrote this when women's history was a big field, which explains history professors' fascination with the book. The only other reason why I can see that historians might actually buy the arguments in this book is because they are so hung up on historical context that they fail to see that, though context is important, a) people do have some modicum of free will, and b) some things transcend time.
I'll probably get in trouble for writing this, but I really do not care. People will flame any books I will write anyway because I'm trying to take the field in another direction. But I digress.
Don't read this book unless you must. If you have to read this book, be sure to take it with a grain of salt.
May I have ashes on that cheesecake, please?.......2001-03-29
This is a great read. I don't care if you're interested in history in general, history of the catholic church, history of western mysticism or just looking for something offbeat and interesting: This is a fascinating book! The history of mysticism and western intellectual tradition as it is intertwined with food is certainly there but for the reader seeking just plain bizarre to our modern eyes goings-on, that is in this text as well. In fact, for someone looking for a jump start to their imagination for their own writing, this book is a real bucket of volts. Go read it. Have fun. But, don't try it at home.
an excellent study of female hagiography.......1999-01-21
This book is truly an exciting text in the field of hagiography studies. It looks at the stories of female vitae and reads the themes behind them with regard to the issues of denial and spirituality. While in the end, Bynum might lean a bit too far towards a feminist self-image reading, nonetheless, for the most part the book is valuable, well-reasoned and shows the potentialities for scholars of ways to approach the large and somewhat heterogeneous corpus of vitae.
Very good read but rather long-winded.......1998-10-23
Caroline Bynum's book, Holy Feast and Holy Fast, examines the importance of food for religious women in the Middle Ages. Although there has been other recent research into the lives of women saints and the way they dealt with food and fasting, for instance by scholars like Weinstein and Bell, as she mentions in the introduction, Bynum promises that in her book she will treat evidence in a different way, most importantly by focusing on the women's point of view. The first two chapters are an introduction to religious women in the Middle Ages and religious food practices of both women and men. Then Bynum turns specifically to women's religious food practices and in the next four chapters she gives a multitude of examples of different women and their different habits or even rituals concerning food. As she says in the introduction, Bynum uses examples from the lives of well known saints, like Elizabeth of Hungary, Lidwina of Schiedam, Columba of Rieti and Catherine of Siena, not because these stories reflect what were normal fasting habits in the Middle Ages, but because their lives are well documented and they would serve as role models for Medieval women. She gives detailed examples of (extreme) food asceticism, cases of inedia, women's devotion of the eucharist and not being able to eat anything but the consecrated host, eucharistic visions, food miracles and some very graphic examples of women eating and drinking the filth of the sick: Several of [Catherine of Siena's] hagiographers report that she twice forced herself to overcome nausea by thrusting her mouth into the putrifying breast of a dying woman or by drinking pus... She told Raymond: "Never in my life have I tasted any food and drink sweeter or more exquisite than this pus." (171-2). Bynum identifies the reasons for this fasting as being, among other things, ways to get closer to God by imitating the lifestyle and suffering of Christ. They would do penance for their sins and suffer to save themselves and other people from Purgatory. The reason why especially women fasted was because food and their own bodies were the only things women had control over and through that control they could manipulate their surroundings. Despite the promising title of the last part of the book: "The Explanation", the first chapter and a good part of the second and third chapters of this section are rather disappointing and cause some confusion. Chapter 6 deals with the parallels between modern eating disorders, like anorexia nervosa, and fasting or inedia in medieval women, even though Bynum states her reluctance to make this connection in the introduction. This reluctance is clearly present throughout the chapter, resulting in a narrative that skips from one subject to another. The second and third chapters of "The Explanation" consist mainly of a repetition of things that were said earlier in the book. However, in the two remaining chapters, Bynum raises some interesting issues of the meaning of the body, women as food and Symbolic Reversal. On the whole, the presentation of the book is excellent and the impressive amount of footnotes that take up more than one hundred pages shows it to be a carefully researched book. Apart from the mentioned 'problem areas' the book makes enjoyable reading and provides the reader with plenty of food for thought and further research.
