Book Description

Wednesday's child is full of woe ...

It was a crime of staggering inhumanity: a seven-year-old girl taken from her home right in front of her desperate working-class mother. With each passing moment, Detective Chief Inspector Alan Banks realizes that the child's death becomes more and more likely. But there are worse fates than death in a nightmare world of human monsters and their twisted games. And the grisly discovery of a young man slain in a particularly savage fashion only starts the clock ticking faster, drawing Banks into the sordid depths of an evil more terrible and terrifying than anything he has ever encountered.

4 out of 5 stars Another Robinson Winner.......2007-09-30

"Wednesday's Child" is another outstanding offering from the talented Peter Robinson. Each of his books are carefully constructed police procedurals and Robinson consistently exhibits an ability to build sensitivity, tension and character into each of his novels. This one features Detective Chief Inspector Alan Banks, the star of most of his novels, but it also gives added dimension to another favorite Robinson character, Detective Superintendent Gristhorpe. The two of them, with their loyal, able Yorkshire police comrades, methodically track down the kidnapper of a little girl. As in all the other Robinson novels, the bad guy is usually not who you think it is. And by the ending, you know that you have read a book written by a literary craftsman. I look forward to reading many more Peter Robinson books.

5 out of 5 stars Seventh Book in the Series.......2007-05-24

Peter Robinson grew up in Yorkshire, and is the author of a number of previous novels featuring Inspector Banks. He is the winner of numerous awards in the United States, Britain and Canada, and in 2002 he won the CWA Dagger in the Library. As I also come from Leeds the background to his stories is something that I have experienced first hand and because of this I have a special affection for his books. However they would be first class crime fiction wherever they were based.

Having said that I can understand to a degree why some readers may not like the books. Banks is a character that has grown over several books and the author is very comfortable not only with the character of Banks, but all the other character too. To me this makes the stories flow because the author instinctively knows how his characters are going to react in certain situations. The books are produced as a series and it is nice if you can read them all in the order they were written, but this is by no means compulsory as each book stands alone. They are what I would call `light' reading. By that I mean that they flow and not that they are third rate in any sense, in fact quite the opposite.

This book centres around the abduction of a young girl from her mother by two people posing as social workers. It is the mother's fear of authority that to leads her to comply with their request to take the young girl away for tests. It is only when they fail to return the seven-year-old that the mother realises that she has made an awful mistake. For all those involved in the case it brings back dreadful memories of the Moors Murders. DCI Banks is also investigating a particularly gruesome murder at an abandoned mine and gradually the clues in the two cases begin to converge . . .

4 out of 5 stars Would have been better without the psychic, too........2006-10-10

It's good to see this series of British police procedurals getting generally better and better with each installment. This is the sixth and the main characters are well established: DCI Alan Banks, a tough but determinedly human ex-Londoner who moved to a small Yorkshire city a few years ago; his independent-minded wife, Sandra, and his two kids, now in their late teens (he has to struggle to turn loose of them); his boss, the usually kindly Superintendent Gristhorpe, a dalesman born; his old sergeant, now in comfortable exile to make room for up-and-comer Phil Richmond, a computer junkie; DC Susan Gay, smart and a hard worker, but still prickly in her junior status; and the market and tourist town of Eastvale itself, at the mouth of a dale filled with small villages, which themselves are filled with fascinating Northerners. The plots Robinson comes up with aren't Agatha Christie-type "cozies," though. In this one, Brenda, a not-very-bright single working class mother gives up her seven-year-old daughter to a couple of supposed social workers -- a peculiarly British attitude toward educated authority figures, apparently. As the search for the abducted child gets under way, the body of a young man turns up who has been gutted. The two cases diverge, for not for long. Brenda's boyfriend, Les, is a classic lowlife petty criminal, but his acquaintances include some who are considerably more chilling. The plot is well thought out and reasonable in its construction and the action is well developed. The only annoying part, actually, is Banks's and Gristhorpe's prejudices, which don't seem to go with the rest of their personalities. I also get a little tired of "cop games" when it comes to interrogation of suspects; how can anyone fall for such nonsense in this day and age? Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to the next volume in the series.

4 out of 5 stars Mystery with a heart.......2004-03-21

Chief Inspector Banks is called in to investigate the disappearance of a little girl named Gemma. Her bewildered mother has let her go with people who claimed to be from a child welfare agency, but instead they kidnapped her. Banks is haunted by the picture of the child, as she resembles the inspector's own daughter. Following this, there is a grisly murder of a man who may have been connected to the missing girl. It is up to Banks and Detective Superintendant Gristhorpe to put together the pieces of the two puzzles into a coherant whole. All of this time these grizzled policemen keep a mental picture of Gemma in mind as motivation to solving the crimes. This is another well-written Detective Banks Mystery by Peter Robinson.

2 out of 5 stars Wednesday's child is wooden........2003-06-30

As far as police procedurals go, this is sort-of ok. For my taste though, the characters are a little flat and too one dimensional. I could not get through this bland piece of soft-boiled prose and had to put it down unfinished. I found Banks and his companions very wooden and not believable. Excluding the victim, there was not enough to go on to feel any true sympathy for the other characters. The plot line IS interesting but gets to a point of being turgid. Perhaps I'll give it another try someday.

Book Description

The extent of severe childhood abuse is little known. Drawing on twenty years of systematic research and interviews, b /b b i Wednesday's Child /i /b examines the reasons why as much as 25% of women have been victims of child abuse, and how this abuse reverberates into their adult lives, doubling their chances of clinical depression. br br The words of many ordinary women are documented here, vividly demonstrating how as survivors of child abuse, their adult relationships and self-esteem have suffered. The authors, who discuss abuse in terms of marital breakdown, poverty and parental psychiatric disorder also show us what we can learn from the experiences of these survivors, assessing factors which will reduce the later impact of childhood abuse on both the children of today and the parents of tomorrow.

This is an impressively researched and presented book - the style makes it suitable for both the interested general reader or the professional; if you are working in the field, it would be a new core text. If you suffer from depression - illuminating.

Book Description

A preschooler marks the progress of her day, not by the clock but by what happens after lunch, after nap, after swimming, after the library – and after Daddy comes home. She doesn’t map her neighborhood by street signs, either. Her morning walk to see dogs in the park takes her past the cat outside the deli, past her friend Errolyn’s building and the daycare where she used to go when she was little, and down the block to the bagel store.

The sounds, tastes, smells, and sights of a multiethnic Brooklyn neighborhood, as seen through a child’s eyes and captured with enchanting pictures by debut illustrator Lauren Castillo, will encourage children to make their own sensory maps and list the events in their daily schedules.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Urban parents will recognize themselves in this book.......2007-07-29

An immensely charming book about everyday routines, especially nice for single children and families that live in urban environs... A young girl walks us through her day, starting with a pre-dawn wake-up and storytime with Mom, and a to-school walk with Dad that takes us on a tour of her New York neighborhood. After lunch, Mom picks her up, they go home, have a nap, then go out for a dip at the pool and trip to the library, then back again for dinner, bath and bedtime. Sounds simple, but the richness of detail (both in the text and the marvelous drawings) makes this one a real winner. The young urban family feels familiar and real -- fans of Mo Willems "Knuffle Bunny" will recognize the Brooklyn landscape, and expatriate New Yorkers will yearn for a bite of their bagels. This book perfectly captures the ebb and flow of a preschool-kindergarten student's life, and will ring a bell for many readers, big and small. Recommended! (ReadThatAgain!)

Book Description

"Dr. Ackerman appeals to the intellect and the heart. His book has the potential to change how parents view divorce—from their children's vantage point." —Margorie Engel Author of the Divorce Decisions Workbook and the Divorce Help Sourcebook

". . . gives clear, practical guidelines to all parents who are wrestling with the pangs of separation and divorce." —Lita Linzer Schwartz, PhD, ABPP Distinguished Professor Emerita Pennsylvania State University Coauthor, Painful Partings: Divorce and Its Aftermath

Divorce is tough for everyone involved, but it can be especially devastating for children. Ultimately, how children are affected depends on how parents conduct themselves during this trying time. Written by a psychologist and child custody expert, this book coaches you on what to expect during divorce, and how to act in your children's best interest. "Does Wednesday Mean Mom's House or Dad's?" won't tell you how to "win" custody battles (a contest nobody ever really wins), but it will show you how to work with your spouse in order to effectively parent together while living apart.

Dr. Ackerman coaches you on every aspect of the divorce, custody, and co-parenting process. You'll learn how to help your children deal with their feelings about the divorce, and handle the changes in their lives. You'll also get a wealth of practical information on what to expect in the legal process, the ins and outs of various custody arrangements and visitation plans, and how to avoid the pitfalls of parenting from a distance.

4 out of 5 stars An Informative Examination of Guidelines to Follow.......1998-07-20

When I picked up this book I was looking for some information about the author. I wanted to get an idea on his perspective on shared placement and co-parenting. I had become quite "stuck" in the once traditional way of thinking that the mom should automatically be the primary caretaker (because I had always been). I was extremely concerned that my 4-year old son feel as though he had his "own" home rather than feeling like a ping-pong ball with no place he could call his own. After re-educating myself, I soon realized that my son has adjusted very well and I believe he feels perfectly okay with the fact that he now has 2 homes and 2 families to be loved in. I was delighted to find that the author has written this book in everyday terms and provides some wonderful information on how to handle many aspects of the divorce/co-parenting situation.

We, as divorcing individuals, need to put aside (and work through our own grieving of the end of the marri! age and dreams we had ourselves) or the "negative intimacy" that clouds much of our initial reactions and decisions. The bottom line is that if we are truly loving and wanting to make the healthiest transition from a two-parent home to "2" - one-parent homes for our children, we must make a conscious effort to put our children truly first and not allow our emotions (or the button pushing attempts of the other parent) to trigger unhealthy reactions and/or responses from us. I have realized that if my child's father tries to push my buttons - it is because he is at a different coping level within the grieving process of divorce (negative intimacy) than I am. When I view it from this standpoint, I am much more successful at dodging those buttons!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Emma Had the Stamina of Her Sign to Survive........2005-10-07

It had been seven years since Richard disappeared with Emma, and Susan had just about giving up ever hearing what happened. Then a sheriff called to say the SUV had been located under a train tresle with his body but an empty infant seat in the back.

"Monday's child is fair of face;
Tuesday's child is full of grace;
Wednesday's child is full of woe;
Thursday's child has far to go.
Friday's child is loving and giving;
Saturday's child works hard for its living;
But the child born on the Sabbath day
Is bonny and blithe, and good and gay."

Jeremiah in the Old Testament used to be my favorite prophet because he was called the prophet of doom. Perhaps, like Emma, I had been a Wednesday child. We are the survivors. Maybe 'woeful' leaves a bad connotation, but it doesn't necessarily mean hopeless.

Richard had been killed before the vehicle was pushed into the water at a curve, where such accidents occur occasionally. Emma had survived and eventually with the persistence of Susan was found. They both lead a better, brighter life that that with Richard, as he was unreliable, and it was thought that he might have had another woman.

This is a "gripping tale of tension-filled romance and heart-stopping suspense." Gayle Wilson has written DOUBLE BLIND and TAKE NO PRISONERS. She may become another Mary Higgins Clark.

4 out of 5 stars Romantic Suspense.......2005-08-10

Susan Chandler's husband diappeared seven years ago along with her baby daughter Emma. Susan always assumed that Richard took her along with all of their saved money. She searched for them, but always took comfort in the fact that Emma was safe with her father. Now, Richard's car with his body is pulled from a river and everything that Susan presumed had happened is false. Now she must find out what happened to her daughter all those years ago with the help of a wounded Delta Force Major, Jeb Bedford.

I really enjoyed the protagonists' chemistry in the story. Sometimes the romance takes center stage over the plotline. Luckily, the plot did not suffer. The story was quite compelling even if things like medical and police ethics were non-existent. I found the story to be quite page-turning.

4 out of 5 stars Hair-raising suspense.......2005-06-11

Seven years ago, Susan Chandler's husband and baby daughter, Emma, disappeared without a trace. To all appearances, Richard left of his own accord. But Susan knew her husband wouldn't desert her. And in her heart, she knew her daughter was alive somewhere, waiting to be found. When she receives a call from a Mississippi county sheriff, reporting her husband's body was found in his car submerged in a river, the information creates more questions than answers. What was he doing in rural Mississippi? And where was Emma?

Susan made the mistake years ago of accepting what law enforcement people told her. She won't do it again. She drives to Linton, Mississippi, intent on investigating the mystery firsthand. But just like before, everyone seems intent on convincing her to go home, accept what happened, and move on with her life. Her only allies are Miz Lorena Bedford, owner of the bed & breakfast where Susan is staying, and her great-nephew Jeb Bedford, on medical leave from the military. Jeb has his own demons to slay, trying to recover from his debilitating injury so he can return to his Delta Force team. But as Susan struggles to confirm her daughter's fate, he finds his protective instincts awakened ... as well as desire.

As she does in her Harlequin Intrigues, Gayle Wilson has created strong, sympathetic characters with real emotions, a puzzler of a mystery, and hair-raising suspense all blended together in a pleasing package. Her Intrigue fans especially should enjoy this longer-format book, which simply offers more of everything she's so good at.

5 out of 5 stars strong amateur sleuth romance .......2005-03-30

In Johnson County, Mississippi, Sheriff Adams informs Mrs. Richard Kaiser that her spouse died in a car accident apparently several years ago when his vehicle went off the road into the Escatawpa River. The SUV with the body inside was only just discovered. Mrs. Kaiser is stunned, but does not correct the sheriff in that she divorced Richard almost seven years ago when he vanished with their child Emily. Using her maiden name of Susan Chandler, she has hopes that Emily still lives as no other corpse was found in the vehicle.

Susan travels to Linton, Mississippi where she finds a room at Lorina Bedford's B&B. Lorina's great nephew Jeb is hostile towards the guest until her inquiries lead to her being run off the road. Jeb, a Delta Force soldier on medical leave from injuries sustained in Iraq, helps Susan investigate based on why her ex spouse would have left the interstate here; their logic being car trouble or medical help as they try to figure out who has suddenly had a toddler. As they follow the cold trail, they fall in love, but neither trusts the other with their respective heart.

WEDNESDAY'S CHILD is a strong amateur sleuth romance with the emphasis on the suspense more so than the love subplot. Susan is a terrific protagonist who by being honest is treated with scorn by law enforcement officials starting with her believing Richard would never harm Emily. The romance between Jeb and Susan is handled in conjunction with the investigation they conduct. Fans will appreciate this powerful glimpse of a mother's worst nightmare nearing closure, but seemingly not attaining it.

But beside that, this book has everything history, romance, crimes. I mean u name it its there. Out of all the books i've read This one is my favorite. I recommend it.Buy it.
Monday's child is my 2nd favorite if u dont have it buy them.

I think this book is great. It begins with Sharlotte Ashford, a nineteen year old debutante, who is on the verge of becoming engaged to another wealthy man. Then a man from her past resurfaces, and try as she may, she cannot shake him from her thoughts. She undergoes a transformation from high society, wealth, and lavishness to becoming a "western" girl and a true Godly woman. I would MOST definitely recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding/Without Words.......2002-10-21

I cannot tell you how much I absolutely loved this book! Not only this book, but this SERIES is incredible. Chaikin does an outstanding job with character/plot development. In this book you see Sharlotte grow from an uppity spoiled rich girl to a girl with a heart. Normally, I do not care for American history based novels, but this was incredible. I do not have the words to say how good it was, other than READ THIS BOOK/SERIES!

5 out of 5 stars Definitely worth the read!.......2001-02-09

In my opinion, "Wednesday's Child" is the best book in the series. Unlike the first two, which are set in Europe during WWII, this book takes place in America at the time of the Great Depression. Sharlotte, who is a Wednesday's Child, is introduced to the reader as a spoiled, flirting nineteen year old who is aware of her beauty, stable financial situation and social level, and her likely upcoming engagement to a wealthy, promising man. If you're hoping for some quick action, you won't be disappointed. A murder, a dashing rival from Sharlotte's past, and the stock market crash set the pace for an exciting book. Linda Chaikin also does a wonderful job bringing all the characters to life for the reader, as well as coming through with the Christian context expected. I found the characters easy to understand and relate to. The plot was very well developed, with an abundance of excitement and adventure. I was intrigued for the duration of the book!

Like another reviewer, I agree that "Gone with the Wind" and "the wild west" scenarios are reflected in "Wednesday's Child". This book is sure to delight many readers; thrilling and mysterious, romantic, historic- these all make an awesome book. It's definitely worth the 400+ page read!!

    Wednesday's Child is the 1997 winner of the Maine Chapbook Award. It is in its third printing. It is taught at universities throughout New England. Introduction in the book:

    This is a book about a female growing up, living in, trying to leave her cultural self behind, and then returning to the Franco-American cultural group which exists in the Northeast, and more specifically in Waterville, Maine. The book addresses what has been asked of me in order to be present to this cultural group of people. As a girl/woman who or how have I been asked to be? What has been asked of me? The book is written from the perspective of a contemporary woman who is also an historical person. The book is also as much about the conditions in which the Franco-American group exists as well as the writing about what it means to be Franco-American and female. This is a book about how we are our historical self while we are in the present. I am more of my past--than I am of the present moment--when it is in the present moment that I now exist. What is, or is not, reflected in my reality and the reality of other Franco-Americans? This book is about the female self and her formation through the many individuals and institutions around her. Through story and cultural filters, the book illustrates family, friends, religion, health, alcoholism, superstitions, art & craft, beliefs, values, song, recipe, story, coming-of-age, generations, motherhood, language, bilingualism, denials, sexuality and what constitutes a cultural individual in a society that will not always allow that person full access or realization to who she is. But she does it anyway.

    4 out of 5 stars Waterville, Maine..........I can relate also.......2000-05-10

    I, like the author, Rhea Cote Robbins was brought up belingually in Waterville, Maine. My mother was born in Beauceville, Canada and moved to Maine to work in the Lewiston mills. My dad's parents were from Canada, and moved to the Waterville. When my mother would speak to my siblings and I, it was always in french, we would answer her in english. I could relate with Rhea's stories of going to a parochial schoold, playing in the cemetary, however not the same one as she did, and also the importance of inheriting my grandmothers quilt.....what a treasure. I did marry a man who graduated from Colby, the elite college on the hill. Enjoyed the french dialog, it brought a smile to my face to see the language in print. The author captured the essence of life, the life I grew up in.
