Get a behind-the-scenes peek at Why We Want You to Be Rich in this video interview with Donald Trump and Robert Kiyosaki. They pair talk about their very different backgrounds, their mutual admiration for one another, and how they came up with the idea to write Why We Want You to Be Rich together.

Book Description

The world is facing many challenges and one of them is financial. The entitlement mentality is epidemic, creating people who expect their countries, employers, or families to take care of them. Donald Trump and Robert Kiyosaki, both successful businessmen, are natural teachers and have joined forces to address these challenges. They believe you cannot solve money problems with money. You can only solve money problems with financial education. Trump and Kiyosaki want to teach you to be rich.

"Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach him to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime."

They each could have written a book on the subject, but they chose instead to write a book together because of their shared passion for education and their desire to bring emphasis to the importance of financial education. In addition they have designated a portion of the profits from each book to be donated to charitable and educational organizations that also support financial education.

Why We Want YOU To Be Rich, Two Men — One Message was written for you.

1 out of 5 stars Do not Buy this what a waste of money take the money you would pay for this and buy lottery tickets and you will be better off.......2007-09-27

most things i listen to or read atleast give me one good idea this is more like a life story rather than how to do anything with it. What a waste of my hard eraned time and money. Do your self a favor and stay away from this USELESS TOOL

4 out of 5 stars Noteworthy.......2007-09-21

This book is awesome. After reading it I have a whole new level of respect for Donald Trump. I salute he and Mr. Kiyosaki for their efforts and their willingness to share with their financial knowledge with the world. I agree, this should be a topic for our children in High School. Our children are our future; we must prepare them. If we don't who will?

1 out of 5 stars No substance, very self serving rants.......2007-09-12

Don't waste your money. This book offers no insight into anything. There are some motivational phrases but that's about it. Trump offers no insight into anything, and just brags upon himself and talks about his family. Kiyosaki's previous work is a lot better than this collaboration. Kiyosaki is starting to sound redundant. All his books are saying the same thing. There is absolutely no "how to" involved in this book. Terrible quality, don't waste your money.

2 out of 5 stars what's worse?.......2007-09-09

I don't know what's worse, the number of bad reviews by everybody here or the fact that so many of the bad reviewers have read Kiyosaki's other books and actually found value in them. If it took you this long to realize Kiyosaki is a shyster then no wonder you're still trying to figure out how to get rich!

5 out of 5 stars Meeting of the rich minds that should meet yours........2007-09-06

I have to admit that this was my first introduction to Robert Kiyosakis writing. I have to say that I was very impressed by the way he tells things in stories and explains things in detail. Then on the other hand you have the Trump perspective on the same issue as just described by Kioysaki, with the classic to the point very short and effective Trump wording. Once again this book could be used for much more than just investing tips and understanding the difference between those who make it and those who don't.

This book could be used to grow both personally and professionally. As a life and executive coach many of the things they talk about in this book are things that I work with small business owners and managers doing. Just a different angle on the how to break free of misconceptions that are known as: "common sense". Just like with many of the other Trump books this is not a step-by-step guide on how to become rich. From what I have now looked through of Kiyosakis books, they are not a step-by-step guide either. Even though they give you more of a guideline and teach you direct things on what to do and more importantly on how to think and break free of how most people do think.

The differences that struck me the most in this book is how the mindset of people that do make it is different from those who do not. It was a very entertaining and educating read, and I personally learned some new things from it that I have implemented not only into my daily life but also my businesses. The way the two use different approaches to the same topic opens up a whole new world of understanding, that is, if you do not quite get what the first part (Kiyosaki) is trying to explain the second part (Trump) will give the abbreviated version of it. Technically you could go though this book and read only one of the authors part and then read the second part as a second book. For it to make the most sense I would recommend that you go through it all at one time though.

Excellent book that I would recommend for more than just investors, would recommend it for entrepreneurs, people wanting to grow personally and professionally. If you are ready to shift the way you think in order to shift how you are doing financially this is a great buy!

Book Description

Three Complete Novels, One for the Money, Two for the Dough, and Three to Get Deadly, from the New York Times#1 Bestselling Author, Janet Evanovich!

Here's where it all began -- the three novels that first brought us Stephanie Plum, that bounty hunter with attitude who stepped out of Trenton's blue-collar "burg" and into the heart of America.

One for the Money: Stephanie's all grown up and out on her own, living five miles from Mom and Dad and doing her best to sever the world's longest umbilical cord. Her mother is a meddler and her grandmother is a few cans short of a case. Out of work and out of money, Stephanie blackmails her bail-bondsman cousin Vinnie into giving her a try as an apprehension agent. Stephanie knows zilch about the job requirements, but she figures her new pal, el-primo bounty hunter Ranger, can teach her what it takes to catch a crook. Her first assignment: nail Joe Morelli, a former vice cop on the run from a charge of murder one. Morelli's the inamorato who charmed Stephanie out of her virginity at age sixteen. There's still powerful chemistry between them, so the chase is interesting.

Two for the Dough: Stephanie takes to the mean streets of Trenton, armed with attitude (not to mention stun guns and defense sprays), to find Kenny Mancuso, who recently shot his best friend and is on the run. Aided by the enigmatic Ranger, who knows a thing or two about bounty hunting, and by her irrepressible Grandma Mazur, Stephanie forms a shaky alliance with her favorite cop, Joe Morelli, for a tumultuous chase through back alleys and Grandma's favorite funeral parlors.

Three to Get Deadly: Stephanie is having a bad hair day -- for the whole month of January. She's looking for Mo Bedemier, Trenton's most beloved citizen, who was charged with carrying concealed and skipped bail. To help her, she's got Lula, a former hooker turned file clerk. Big, blonde, and black, Lula's itching to lock up a crook in the trunk of her car. And Morelli, the cop with the slow-burning smile, is acting polite even after Stephanie finds more bodies than the Trenton PD has seen in years. That's a bad sign for sure.

Funny and fabulous, Janet Evanovich is at her sparkling best in these three novels that launched a bestselling phenomenon.

Download Description

Published to coincide with the release of Janet Evanovich's new Stephanie Plum mystery, Three Plums in One offers readers the trio of novels that launched the bestselling, award-winning Stephanie Plum phenomenon -- in a single, unabridged, hardbound edition. Introducing the madcap humor, colorful characters, and local flavor that have become Janet Evanovich's trademark, Three Plums in One invites readers to discover Stephanie Plum, America's favorite bounty hunter with attitude, at the beginning of her almost accidental career as an "apprehension agent". In One for the Money, an out-of-work and out-of-money Stephanie blackmails her bondsman cousin into giving her a job tracking down bail jumpers. Knowing nothing of the trade, she tags along with a veteran bounty hunter, Ranger, learning the ropes as they go in search of a cop on the run from a murder one charge -- a cop who happens to be Stephanie's first love. Two for the Dough and Three to Get Deadly find Stephanie back on the mean streets of Trenton, New Jersey, in hot pursuit of her bounty, each time a little more savvy, a little bit tougher, and as outrageously funny as ever. Die-hard fans and first time readers alike will delight in discovering Janet Evanovich at her sparkling, suspenseful best in the three Plums that started it all.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read!.......2007-08-16

The Stephanie Plum series is so great. I have read a few of her books that are outside the series but to finally get all the background is great! You will really fall in love with Stephanie Plum and all her antics.

5 out of 5 stars Stephanie Rocks!.......2007-07-21

Fast & Easy Read! Great for airplanes, but be prepared for some funny looks when you are laughing out loud. Grandma Mazur and Lula seem to find trouble wherever they go. (Although Stephanie is not really a very good bounty hunter!) :)

5 out of 5 stars Very funny series.......2007-07-01

A friend recommended this series to me; at first, I was skeptical, because I always think that mysteries are always the same. However, Stephanie Plum is completely different from the other detectives I've seen in mysteries. She's a Trenton bounty hunter with a slightly senile gun-wielding grandmother, a smoldering sexual tension with cop Joe Morelli, and a fondness for Pino's pizza. There's also Lula, a 230-pound ex-hooker-turned-file-clerk, who sometimes helps Stephanie on her cases. These three books, the first in the series, are hysterically funny; I can't wait to read more! Highly recommended for anyone who wants to get a jump start on the Stephanie Plum series. I know that my next stop will be the bookstore for More Plums In One, the collection of novels four, five, and six.

4 out of 5 stars gripping suspense full of comedy.......2007-05-09

This book is so funny.... it keeps you reading to find out what other mess Stephanie is going to put her self in. I started the series by reading book 12, when I finished that one I ordered books 1 - 4. I just have to get the entire series.

4 out of 5 stars Get Acquainted with Stephanie.......2007-03-09

Great way to meet Stephanie Plum. This is a quick way to get going. Stephanie is not stereotypical in any sense. She's down to earth, smart, resourceful and has a long memory. If you've always wanted to do something out of the ordinary, do it vicariously through Stephanie Plum. You won't be disappointed.

Book Description

The editors of The Friend Who Got Away are back with a new anthology that will do for money what they did for women’s friendships.

Ours is a culture of confession, yet money remains a distinctly taboo subject for most Americans. In this riveting anthology, a host of celebrated writers explore the complicated role money has played in their lives, whether they’re hiding from creditors or hiding a trust fund. This collection will touch a nerve with anyone who’s ever been afraid to reveal their bank balance.

In these wide-ranging personal essays, Daniel Handler, Walter Kirn, Jill McCorkle, Meera Nair, Henry Alford, Susan Choi, and other acclaimed authors write with startling candor about how money has strengthened or undermined their closest relationships. Isabel Rose talks about the trials and tribulations of dating as an heiress. Tony Serra explains what led him to take a forty-year vow of poverty. September 11 widow Marian Fontana illuminates the heartbreak and moral complexities of victim compensation. Jonathan Dee reveals the debt that nearly did him in. And in paired essays, Fred Leebron and his wife Katherine Rhett discuss the way fights over money have shaken their marriage to the core again and again.

We talk openly about our romantic disasters and family dramas, our problems at work and our battles with addiction. But when it comes to what is or is not in our wallets, we remain determinedly mum. Until now, that is. Money Changes Everything is the first anthology of its kind—an unflinching and on-the-record collection of essays filled with entertaining and enlightening insights into why we spend, save, and steal.

The pieces in Money Changes Everything range from the comic to the harrowing, yet they all reveal the complex, emotionally charged role money plays in our lives by shattering the wall of silence that has long surrounded this topic.

4 out of 5 stars Insightful perspectives.......2007-03-18

I really liked this book. It's amazing how everyone views money differently! The essays kept my interest and I am recommending the book to others.

3 out of 5 stars This book was okay.......2007-03-15

It wasn't bad for the most part. it was nice reading the different ways people's lives turned out. Some parts of this book were a little boring to me though. I felt like it was too many people whining about getting too much money or being in too much debt.

4 out of 5 stars This one will have you thinking about how money has affected YOUR life and is a FUN read! .......2007-03-04

FIrst off, this is NOT a how-to book on personal finance. If you want that, go find one of the tons of books on the subject. But this book could help you change your outlook on money and think about how your own life has been affected by it. Each essay in this book is a personal confession or revelation about how money or money problems (or obtaining a sudden windfall) greatly changed someone's life.
Let's face it- Discusing one's personal finances with friends, even family, can be as taboo as discussing sex - and so it is relief to find a book where that taboo is broken. I'm sure plenty of readers will relate to the dilemnas of twenty two writers who explore the various ways money has altered their lives, whether it was going into a deep depression during a debt crisis, living with guilt after inheriting money as a 9/11 widow, being open about money fights with one's spouse, why someone would take on a vow of poverty or the unique challenges of dating a heiress.
This book will make you think - and perhaps rethink- your attitude towards finances. After all, it's only money - or is it?

5 out of 5 stars Money Does Change Everything.......2007-02-27

We get into more trouble when we don't communicate well with others. Money has always been such a taboo. It would probably solve so many problems if people could talk more openly about this subject. Money has too much power over us. Wouldn't be nice if we could value people more than money?

Book Description

The True Story of Two Master Criminals Aiming to Take America's Biggest Prize and Our Security Agencies' Systematic Inability to Stop Them by the Former Intelligence Agent Recruited to Foil Their Plan

Robert Sensi has worked for the CIA, the Republican National Committee, and, as cover, for Kuwait Airways and the Kuwaiti royal family. He has twice served time in federal prison for embezzlement and fraud. Richard Hirschfeld, originally recruited to the CIA by Sensi, boasts an equally illustrious past: in the seventies he duped investors out of millions of dollars, later allegedly stole a $12-million payoff from Ferdinand Marcos intended for Ronald Reagan, and came within a hairbreadth of conning the U.S. Senate out of $50 million.

When the Department of Homeland Security suspects that Sensi and Hirschfeld are at the center of an investigation involving money laundering and the funding of Al Qaeda-and when their supposedly comprehensive database turns up little to no information on either man-it takes onetime spy Larry Kolb to crack the case, ultimately orchestrating Hirschfeld's spectacular capture. But when Kolb begins to connect the dots, he realizes something even more sinister is afoot, and that he's on to the biggest possible con with the highest political stakes.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excelent story and well written.......2007-05-14

This book has some very interesting insight into a real story that depicts how some things work in this world... how someone can get all the way to the "kitchen" with the Bush's and be an outlaw. Very well written novel also! Only con would be some far fetched conspiracy theeories laid out at the beginning of the book and never proved during the book.

1 out of 5 stars Fiction Is Stranger Than Truth.......2007-04-23

I'm sure most of what Mr. Kolb says is true about Hirschfeld and Sensi but I suspect he uses this capital to serve his ultimate goal -- to trash everything Republican. As a hit piece of this magnitude he is unconvincing. Ironically, if the picture Kolb has painted of these two con men is accurate and their abilitiy to use powerful figures is proven, then why is he not looking to find innocence in the many Republican politicians that seem to have been used? Why does he automatically see conspiracy on a wider scale within the GOP?

He seems to trust "The Gray Eminence" and other people he has actually talked to like Engin Yesil. John Kerry is a war hero (Bush a poseur). He uses the term neo-con as a perjorative. Wolfowitz, Rice et al are war mongers out of touch with what....the omniscient benevolence of the Kerry team? A balanced outing of the "facts" would have at least included some rebuttal. There is none. He says at the beginning he is non-partisan. Nice try.

He believes he is saving the world from evil. Has Kolb read Bill Sammon's book "At Any Cost - How Al Gore Tried To Steal The Election"? How that egalitarian and progressive organization, the Chicago Daley Machine was called in as a fixer for the Florida recount? There is no paucity of evil in America. Why be seletive?

The fact is that both parties have operatives. Both parties are involved in scullduggery. And because of the hightened political climate both parties have a stake in deeming the other an enemy. I think the day of a mere advisarial relationship between left and right is over.

We all pick sides. Kolb is on the Democratic team.

1 out of 5 stars criminals, no conspiracy.......2007-03-19

An entertaining book, as long as you don't believe the far-fetched conspiracy theories. The author takes a fact here, a factoid there, on and on and tries to put them together for a grand conspiracy. As far as I could tell, it's really just the story of some con men, talented and interesting though they were.

2 out of 5 stars becomes weird.......2007-03-12

This started off as interesting, but I lost interest when he started writing page after page about Muhammud Ali as the greatest man who ever lived. Toward the end, the book became a reason to bash the right, although the author claims he isn't. Kold is a left wing partisan, and it shows. Too bad, as the books holds real promise.

5 out of 5 stars FASCINATING .......2007-03-08

America at Night is one of the most riveting books I've read in a long while. I absolutely couldn't put it down. Not only is the story completely intriguing, but Kolb--unlike many true crime authors--can really write. The man is obviously a born storyteller. And in this case, the story he's telling happens to be true--which makes the book all the more fascinating. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in how politics really works in this country, or anyone that just enjoys a compulsive, compelling read.

Cynthia Yates' 'Living Well on One Income' is a good read. It has humor, lots of personal examples that anyone can identify with, and it is filled with good tips. Yates challenges our attitudes about money and belongings and encourages everyone to "Waste Not, Want Not."

5 out of 5 stars Living on One Income in a Two Income World.......2006-03-11

Absolutely loved it. Great book. I recommend it to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Great motivator.......2004-12-30

This book was very well-written and instantly got me in the mood to reorganize my life! As a stay at home Mom, my husband and I were desperate to find ways to "cut corners." The author makes it very clear in the beginning of the book that she was NOT writing about debt management, investing, saving, etc. This is purely a book about organizing your life, your home, and how to be smart and frugal with things like shopping. It had great insight. I knew before I got this book that it is spiritual-based, and that's exactly what I was looking for too. I wanted a book that also followed my beliefs in the Bible and not simply a worldly view. I think that's a great asset to the book!
Definitely a great buy!

2 out of 5 stars Some good tips, but not what I was hoping for.......2004-04-03

This book is interesting reading, but to me it read more like a hodge-podge of frugality tips, random anecdotes, and Sunday school lessons than an organized approach to making your money go further. The author is really enthusiastic, and she gives some very accurate and humorous descriptions of the clutter to be found in many homes. But I really had to pay attention to mine the best tips from the book because they got lost in hype, strange personal stories, and religious discussions. Some of the advice in the book struck me as just plain weird, such as to stay away from your microwave because it might explode; to put a bowl of ammonia into a warm oven to clean it (I can just imagine the smell !); to buy food in bulk and re-can it at home (that just sounds dangerous to me); to give someone a year's worth of old magazines tied up in ribbon as a gift. Finally, this book is very religious; there are references to scripture from the Bible inserted into almost every discussion. I don't mind a book on personal finance including some discussion of the spiritual basis of abundance, but I had a difficult time making the connection between the religious ideas presented and the surrounding points, and it just felt like opportunistic preaching to me. Overall I felt this book sort of meandered around without providing any clear direction that would help someone to change the way they think about money. Two alternatives to this book are "Your Money or Your Life: Transforming Your Relationship With Money and Achieving Financial Independence" by Joe Dominguez and Vicki Robin, and "The Tao of Abundance" by Laurence G. Boldt. In closing, I will contribute my own frugality tip....if you want to read this book, do what I did and check it out from the library so you don't spend any money on it.

5 out of 5 stars This book changed my life forever!.......2006-10-12

I saw Linda Kelley on a Prime Time news show several years ago. She was doing a segment on her book. She looked at a family with both parents working and barely making ends meet. Both mom and dad were stressed and never got to spend time together as a family. Upon further inspection, it was actually costing this family for both parents to work! I figured out my true salary at the time and found out I was only taking home $50/week after all my expenses. I cried for hours and then realized I could do something to change it. Now, two children later, I'm still a stay-at-home mom. My family and I owe a huge thank you to Linda and her book!

5 out of 5 stars Surprising Information!!!.......2006-03-04

When I first picked up this book, I was skeptical of the value. However, after doing the analysis on my own household when we lost our family business and I needed to determine what a second income was worth to us, I was really surprised. In my situation it seemed that the most devastating effect on the second income was income tax. WOW - it was half gone! Then the work related expenses I never thought to consider, because I perceived that they were neglible, really added up. You just won't believe all this unless you look at it for yourself. Most people shrug this information off because they don't really see it, and they think they have a handle on this. It isn't what you make, folks, it is what you keep. That came through loud and clear in this book. You might have a second income of $60,000 a year and be losing money and not realize it. This book should be reprinted and promoted more heavily in these economic times.

4 out of 5 stars Especially useful for families with kids.......2004-10-26

If you're having trouble living on one income, espcecially if you have kids, this book simplifies the process of figuring out whether you'll truly benefit both financially and emotionally from working outside the home. Here's why:

1. The author gives detailed worksheets for all sorts of extra costs associated with working, from the expected (taxes, work clothes) to the unexpected (extra hosiery, meals outside the home, guilt costs)

2 Real life examples are given, showing the real benefits (or lack of them) from an extra income. If one person earns $50,000, for example, and another earns $20,000, the extra income can well be eaten up with extra taxes, child care, reduced time (making it more likely that someone will have to be paid for housework or other chores) and more.

3. Proof is povided that indicates that an extra working parent can actually put families in an economic hole - or deepen the one they're in.

The author has worked outside the home and went back to work when her kids got older. This book is not a diatribe against working moms but a detailed examination of the realities of having that extra job. Clear, logical and well-written, this one is a must-have for anyone considering work outside the home. If you don't have kids, this book may not appeal to you, since most of the examples do relate to working parents, not childless couples.

5 out of 5 stars insightful, practical, non-biased advice.......2003-03-21

If you're trying to decide of you can live on one income once the baby is born, you need this book. Unlike a lot of similar books, this book doesn't try and sway you one way or the other. (In other words, some families may find they're better off with one income, some families will complete the same worksheets and find they do indeed need two incomes.) It offers little in the way of philosophical, social or political justifications for one parent at home. It provides a way that each family can analyze what they spend and if two incomes is necessary. Some families may be surprised to see that having a second salary may cost them more! The points about taxation were especially revealing, and you don't have to have your masters degree in economics to follow this book!

4 out of 5 stars Literally life changing book for me.......2001-08-13

After buying this book and working through the figures, my husband and I determined that we could live on one income after our baby was born.

Why do we think we have to have two incomes to survive? It's because our existing lifestyle choices necessitate the additional income. Bigger house? Two brand new cars? Designer clothes? Stereos, appliances, toys, etc. If you think you need a big, brand new house and fill it with a lot of things, you will need two incomes and then some.

The main lesson I learned from this book is the high cost of an additional income, especially after having kids and incorporating daycare expenses.

Read this book with an open, objective state of mind and it can work for you, too.

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2006-06-26

I found this book very helpful in making my transition to a SAHM. I especialy like the section on cleaning and making your house run smoothly with little effort.

5 out of 5 stars Recommended in conjunction with Miserly Moms.......2004-02-25

What I liked best about this book:

1. The chapter on contingency plans. Yes, it's obvious that it's a good idea to have a backup-plan in case the working parent gets laid off, there's a large unexpected expense, etc. Nevertheless, I found it helpful to read the authors' experiences regarding such emergencies which happened in their families and to consider the various ideas and options presented. My own contingency plan was that I worked fifteen months longer than I wanted to and progressively worked up to putting my entire paycheck in savings; by the time I quit, we had enough money set aside to pay our living expenses for an entire year, if that became necessary.

2. The chapter on stay-at-home blues. I appreciated the authors' candor in describing the pros and cons of staying home. A humorous (but true) example they give is that you won't necessarily fall in love with cleaning the bathroom and once home, you may do it more often than you did before. Most importantly, they're honest about the feeling of isolation that can creep up on a stay-at-home parent and how one can deal with it.

3. They "tell it like it is". As they say, unless one of the parents' incomes is completely disposable, it is going to be necessary to make some sacrifices somewhere. Something will have to go in order to keep the family's financial boat afloat. My family experienced this period of adjustment while saving for our emergency fund; by the time I left work, we were already used to managing on one income and it wasn't so difficult.

I address the chapters on the "cons" of staying home specifically because if most people pick up a book like this in the first place, it's probably because they already want to be home with their child(ren). What they want to know is how to achieve that goal and what to expect along the way. I found this book a terrific primer on how to get off the fast track in the smoothest possible manner.

The reason I recommended this book in conjunction with Miserly Moms by Jonni McCoy is that I feel the latter book presents a larger share of nuts-and-bolts information on how to reduce expenses. Jonni McCoy once worked as a senior buyer for Apple Computers, among other firms, and you can see this real-world experience in how she analyzes and approaches the issue of frugality.

5 out of 5 stars Great Advice for Moms Weighing the Stay At Home Option.......2002-08-16

I really liked this book because it gave practical advice that seemed realistic and was supported by personal stories and testimonials.

1 out of 5 stars Nothing new - save your money.......2002-03-01

The title of this book caused me to snatch it off the shelf. I'm just glad it was a library shelf rather than a bookstore shelf.
I found the information extremely obvious and learned very little.
Basically, if you want to stay home, cut the extras. If you buy a... coffee, pastry, eat out and shop every day, well, then, cut it out. And if you normally buy convenience foods at the grocery, get a manicure every week and buy expensive clothes, then stop. That's the basic summary of the book.
I have already made these obvious cuts, as well as counting in work-related costs such as transporation, dry cleaning, etc., so it taught me absolutely nothing new...

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book.......2001-12-29

Great ideas.
The writers are not pushy about anyone becoming a stay at home parent.
They are not unbiased (staying home with your kids is best for them) but they stay as well balanced as possible.
This book is helping make it possible for my HUSBAND to stay home with our 4 kids !!!
We love it!!

4 out of 5 stars Two Classic Crime Noir Tales.......2007-07-26

This volume reprints the first two of Max Collins' novels about Nolan, a character initially patterned as "homage" to Richard Stark's tough guy Parker.

In Blood Money, Nolan, a long time professional heister (that is he earned his money the old-fashioned way: he stole it) has found an apparent opportunity to put to rest the long time animosity of the Chicago Outfit (and to get the contract on his life rescinded). All he has to do is pay a sum reasonably attainable by "withdrawal" from a small town Midwestern bank. He puts together a team of willing amateurs for the task, but things are not as straight-forward as they seem. Internal tensions wthin the Outfit and difficulties within the robbey team complicate life as double-cross after double-criss occurs, up to the last page.

In Blood Money, before Nolan can recover from the near fatal conclusion of Bait Money, the money he secured to satisfy his obligation with the Outfit is stolen, his surviving partner kidnapped, and a senior colleague murdered. Both from loyalty to Jon, and from the principle that no one heists a heister, Nolan is forced, well, to be Nolan. The identity of the robbers and their personal issue with Nolan drive him toward the violent finish as he finds himself working with, or is it against, the Outfit once more.

Collins' style is terse, muscular, and fitting for the noir style of the 70 when these were initially published. Nolan is a hard professional, not cruel or vicious, just very professional at doing what needs to be done. The writing is direct and the action credible.

Fans of the Parker series will enjoy these initial books of the Nolan series.

Collins went on to write five more novels involving Nolan and Jon. In them, the character of young Jon becomes more siginificant, as does Nolan's desire to put heisting behind him and, as he says "go straight." Circumstances, his loyalty to Jon, and the vengeance of some with whom he had dealings during his "professional" years will conspire to complicae the attainment of his objectives. The concluding novels are far less "tough" than the initial two, certainly not Parkeresque, and as Collins himself says the presence of Jon hunanizes Nolan. They are still worth reading, especially once one has got to know Nolan and Jon

5 out of 5 stars If You Like Parker ..........2006-09-05

Fine vintage noir writing with few wasted words. Protagonist Nolan is a slightly more sentimental version of Westbrook's (i.e., Richard Stark) Parker. If you like the Parker books, you'll like these too. Hopefully, Collins has a few more reprises of this character left ...

5 out of 5 stars A couple of great crime novels.......2004-12-09

Max Allan Collins is one of those authors that other authors don't want to hate, but simply have to because he is so prolific, and because he makes it look so easy. Since his first novel was published thirty years ago, Collins has churned out mystery series, stand-alones, comics, and movie and TV tie-ins to the tune of 80+ published full-length works -- even going so far as to write the novelization of the screenplay of a film (Road to Perdition) that was already based on his own work (in this case, a graphic novel)! Two for the Money contains his first two published novels (in their 1981 revised versions, as opposed to the 1973 originals): Bait Money and Blood Money, #1 and #2 in a series of five (so far) books starring professional thief Nolan.

The book seems to start at the end of one story and the beginning of another as we are introduced to Nolan 35 days into his convalescence from a gunshot wound. (Although "convalescence" may be the wrong word since he seems to be spending the majority of the time having sex with the waitress who has put him up -- and put up with him -- for all that time.) One phone call changes all of that, however, and he sneaks out soon after she goes to work.

The first book (Bait Money) of Two for the Money falls under the "last big heist" heading, with Nolan wanting to retire. He's 48 and it's definitely time to give up this high-risk business. Unfortunately, some "Family" members have a grudge against him that makes that difficult-to-impossible. But he has an out: if he pulls one more heist for them, to the tune of $100,000, they will "forgive" him. The catch is that he has to pull it with the planner's nephew, Jon. This contrasting of old blood and new has long been a cliche (it may even have been then), but Collins' skill at characterization makes it work, even if a few leaps of faith need to be taken.

Book Two (Blood Money) was written very soon after the acceptance of Bait Money for publication, and so follows closely on the latter's heels. Collins himself even sees the two as one long novel, hence the omnibus publication. In it, we learn more about Jon, an aspiring comics (or "graphic story") artist. Jon's love of comics is a thread that runs throughout Blood Money and this is a world that Collins certainly knows something about, having written for the comic strip Dick Tracy from 1977 to 1993 (Max Allan Collins fans should note that reprints of that series are becoming available under the title Dick Tracy: The Collins Casefiles), as well as authoring numerous graphic novels of his own creation.

Collins wastes no time getting Blood Money off to a running start. A vital supporting character from Bait Money is killed -- and $800,000 is stolen -- in the first few pages. Later, Nolan finds out that someone he thought was dead isn't. Collins uses a fascinating technique throughout this entry of having news delivered by telephone to one character and then backing up to show the story leading up to the exchange, this time from the caller's perspective. He also adds useful tidbits of information, like how having high blood pressure can make a victim more likely to die of a gunshot wound. He also showcases the unheralded victim of a gunfight: the guy who has to clean up the mess.

Darkly funny details like these make Two for the Money a joy to read, Max Allan Collins a new favorite author, and Nolan a character I plan on revisiting soon. Collins admits that Nolan is an almost complete rip-off of Donald Westlake pseudonym Richard Stark's Parker, but Westlake appreciated the differences Collins offered the stories and gave Collins his blessing to continue the series. These stories would make terrific movies, and artist Mark Texeira helps out Hollywood's casting directors by drawing his own preferences on the cover painting, with Nolan resembling a cleaned-up Nick Nolte, and Jon and the irresistible Shelly looking strikingly like modern "it couple" Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon. Someone should advise Nolte to latch on to this possible comeback opportunity. In the meantime, I'm going to latch on to all the Max Allan Collins books I can get my hands on.

5 out of 5 stars Two good novels that work best as one story.......2004-11-11

The two books reprinted in this one volume (Bait Money, Blood Money) are very satisfying early works from Collins. Blood Money is one of the best literary sequels I have ever encountered, perhaps even TOPPING its predecessor. And yet, more than a sequel, the 2nd book works best as the second half of the story begun in Bait Money.

This book makes an EXCELLENT companion piece to Collin's book "Tough Tender," which reprints two other books in this same series (Hard Cash, Scratch Fever). Put them together and add the final novel, "Spree," and you have an epic potboiler that is unequaled in mystery fiction

4 out of 5 stars "Bait Money & Blood Money" as one great novel.......2004-11-07

Max Allan Collins writes some of the best hard-boiled mystery novels out there and this story is not one to be put down and walked away from.

"Nolan", Collin's stoic professional thief is in a jam from the begining with a bullet in his side and a beautiful waitress taking care of him. He decides to make a peace offer to a mobster whose brother Nolan killed years ago. From then on the plot twists and turns relentlessly.

"Two For The Money" is really two books Max Allan Collins wrote previously titled "Bait Money" and the sequel "Blood Money". Having them under one cover is great. The art work on the cover is old-school and so is the action. Characters real enough to be able to pick out of a line-up, and lots of bullets, sex, and betrayal. Hard-boiled mystery and action at it's best.

Two words sum this book up .. Par Excellence . I got Andy Dappen's book from the library and hated to part with it when its renewal limit was reached . I would strongly recommend this book for newly weds , single income families and people who are knee deep in debt and want to get out of the money trap.

When will this book come into print again ???

5 out of 5 stars This guy is crazy! I love it!.......1999-08-21

This guy is a frugal maniac and proud of it. Some of his ideas are really batty, but most make a lot of good sense. I read an excerpt in Reader's Digest and then got his book from the library. Don't let his crazy ideas like using old bread as a frisbee distract you from his main concept that you can be happy with less, and even have fun trying to find ways to save. I would think Mr. Dappen would prefer you don't spend your money on this book though. Check the book out of the library instead!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect book for families switching to one income living........1998-11-20

Andy Dappen's book, "Shattering the Two Income Myth," critically examines the idea that two incomes are a requirement for family life in the modern world. He draws some interesting conclusions. Dappen refers to a U.S. Labor Department study that has shown the average dual-career family loses up to two-thirds of its second paycheck to work-related expenses, and if children needing daycare or after school supervision are in the picture, the percentage of work-related expenses is even higher. To truthfully calculate the earnings from a family's second set of wages, they would need to subtract all work-related expenses from their income. Dappen asserts that many second income-earners are "spending big bucks for the privilege of joining the nine-to-five parade."

Dappen also takes the view that one of the main reasons people feel unable to live on a single income is due to inflated expectations of what a family truly "needs" to live well. He calls it "our love affair with consumerism." Trophy houses, sport utitlity vehicles, new mini vans, designer clothes, big screen TV's and $100 running shoes are just some of the so-called "needs" many parents are working to supply for their families.

Dappen encourages a change of attitude---a refocusing to a mindset that embraces contentedness and fullfillment rather than following after consumer-driven forces. Dappen says, "Making your life happier, more directed, and less stressful distills down to the acceptance of five simple words: You can't have it all."

"Shattering the Two Income Myth" would be an ideal book for any family contemplating the change from two incomes to a single income situation. The book offers practical suggestions for preparing for, and actually making the switch to, living on one income. There are also numerous personal inventory questions to help with the decision making process.

5 out of 5 stars Great title, important book!.......1998-11-06

Had enough of the fast-paced, latch-keyed, two-earner treadmill? This book can help put quality back into your family's time. Andy Dappen's advice and money-saving tips, at least one for every day of the year, are great for all families -- whether or not you choose to become a one-income household.

Book Description

The numbers presented in every sales pitch seem clear, but do the numbers also hide facts the seller does not want you to know? In The Two Headed Quarter, Joseph Ganem provides an account of how a physicist evaluates the numbers in day-to-day financial decisions. Seeing numbers through his eyes will surprise you. Like flipping a two-headed quarter, many of the so-called deals you make each day are rigged so that no matter which side the coin lands on, you pay.

Ganem covers a wide range of topics that touch on almost all aspects of our consumer lives. Whether shopping for items large or small, negotiating a salary, investing in stocks, or planning your retirement, you will want to know how numbers are routinely used to fool you. Useful, informative, and highly entertaining, The Two Headed Quarter exposes everyday consumer deceptions and provides real-world tips and tactics to `beat `em at their own game.'

"If you liked Freakonomics, you'll absolutely love The Two Headed Quarter! A fascinating look into how clever marketing and advertising techniques are used to manipulate consumers." - Lynnette Khalfani, author of The Money Coach's Guide to Your First Million and the New York Times bestseller Zero Debt: The Ultimate Guide to Financial Freedom

Want to know how to avoid being ripped off or tricked by deceptive claims? Buy this book, read it and pull it down from the shelf to review relevent sections before you borrow money or make large purchases. Helpful and humorous, with some tables that I found helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Arm yourself with math.......2007-09-12

The Two-Headed Quarter opened my eyes to deceptive practices that should have been so clear. The book will help you avoid the mistakes so many of us made throughout our financial lives.

Why, for example, do real estate agents take you to houses that are outside your specified range? Were they listening? The answer is, "yes, they were." They also know that you will compare all other house values to the first few prices you saw. See "anchoring" in Ganem's book.

We are potential victims of people who use well-researched, scientific theories about human nature. Why not arm yourself with mathematical models that will even the playing field? Consider it a wise investment.

5 out of 5 stars The Two-Headed Quarter is written to be thoroughly accessible to lay people.......2007-09-06

Physics teacher Joseph Ganem applies his mathematical expertise to the realm of money and finance in The Two-Headed Quarter: How to See Through Deceptive Numbers and Save Money on Everything You Buy, a no-nonsense guide to the technically legal yet inordinately deceptive practices of modern advertising: "low, low monthly payments", "zero percent interest", and many more offers too good to be true "only if you buy today!" Chapters cover how to apply reasonable estimations in one's approach to financial planning, the mathematics of income growth and investing, how to carefully evaluate loans, and much more. Though mathematically astute, The Two-Headed Quarter is written to be thoroughly accessible to lay people and is very strongly recommended for readers of all economic and financial backgrounds.

5 out of 5 stars The Two Headed Quarter.......2007-06-27

Every consumer should read this book. In fact, it should be mandatory reading in every high school consumer ed class. It spells out like nothing I've seen the many ways that marketing "spins" bad deals into good-sounding ones. Before you buy anything with financing, especially, including buying a house with a mortgage, read this book for how to sort out the deals. It will save you tons of money. After all, no one wants to be taken to the cleaners, and when you can so easily gain the upper hand in evaluating offers and negotiating terms of your purchase, there really is no reason to be. You can also learn stuff that will make mutual fund prospectuses more understandable. This book will also help those of you wanting to get even better returns on your retirement funds and other savings by investing in individual stocks and other investments. The discussion about short selling of stocks was particularly illuminating, which is impressive given the complexity of the subject. And in the process of learning how to do that, you'll have lots of fun with the author's stories and insights into how numbers are used and abused in our political debates. A must read for everyone!

5 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Numbers Book.......2007-06-23

My whole family enjoyed reading and discussing this book. The author makes mathematics very understandable. He provides fascinating insights on how numbers can be used to manipulate perceptions of reality. A must read.
