Before Paul Jenkins gave us Origin: The True Story of Wolverine, Barry Windsor-Smith crafted this story detailing the defining moment of Marvel's most popular mutant. Weapon X details how a nomadic mutant named Logan is kidnapped and experimented upon in order for him to be turned into a living weapon. From the memory alterations, brainwashing, and adamantium grafting; Wolverine is born. What makes Wolverine: Weapon X so good even to this day is the surprising amount of violent and mature content that strikes a chord with X-Men fans new and old. Windsor-Smith's script is action packed, and his artwork is breathtaking indeed (as a previous reviewer already pointed out) as well. Of all the recent Marvel Premiere Classic hardcover graphic novels to hit the market lately, Wolverine: Weapon X is one of the few that is actually deserving of such a treatment, and the story as a whole remains one of the essential X-Men and Wolverine titles in the whole X-Men mythos. All in all, if you're a Wolverine fan new or old, consider this handsome hardcover an absolute must own.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Wolverine Past Story.......2006-08-11

In this book you will find, action, an interestig plot, that will blow your brain, will make you ride in an violent adventure, the drawing it's not an conventional art but good enough. YOU MUST READ THIS FINE PIECE OF COMIC ART.

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2005-09-15

OK, if you want to read a synopsis of this book, or other philisophical mumbo-jumbo, scroll on down. But I'm here to give you the skinny - this is an incredible collection, absolutely stunning, and an indespensible part of any Wolverine fan's library. Barry Smith's art is raw and savage, and manages to capture the "cold" feel of Canadian outback and underground secret labs, to say nothing of Weapon X himself. The story is actually pretty decent here too, what there is of it, anyway. This is actually the origin story of Wolvie's adamantium bones, not the character himself, but is a much cooler tale than "Origin" (boy, THAT was a stinker, but anyway...)
bottom line? You can't go wrong with this one: HIGHEST POSSIBLE RECOMMENDATION

3 out of 5 stars Wolvie hacks and slashes, Deadpool cracks jokes; the usual.........2007-08-15

This gathers 5 issues or so each of a storyline that ran though Wolverine the monthly comic series, and a Deadpool series backs it up.

I used to love Wolverine. While he remains an original, interesting character in his own right, I believe that stories like this, as well as the flood of "Origin" stories now filling the shelves, only serve to drag a great character down.

Here we have Wolvie being framed for the murder of a Senator connected to the Weapon X program (or maybe he did really do it--Logan can't really remember, see). This adventure finds him getting help from a certain Dr. Hank McCoy. Villians like Sabertooth of course appear along the way.

What's interesting is Wolvie's ties to the shadowy "director" of Weapon X, Malcom Concord. I won't reveal their ties here (if you read the comics you know this character and his history anyway), but Concord serves as an interesting foe for Wolvie, even as he delivers heavy exposition every time he appears.

The Deadpool side of this book is what saves this trade. Anyone who knows the 'merc with a mouth' will know exactly what to expect from this story.

I found myself quite bored with the Wolverine tale--even though there are enough twists, turns, and all-out action. Something about Frank Tieri's writing style just doesn't do it for me. Wolverine is basically invulnerable at this point. There's not much superlative here--The art is good to servicable. Why this is going for $50.00 through the marketplace is beyond me. It must be out of print.

4 out of 5 stars history - who remebers it anyway?.......2007-08-16

It seems everyone has a different version of 'Logan's' history, so this doesn't comepletely match some of what I've previously read about what happened, but good read overall.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best X-Men novelization out there..........2006-05-23

Wolverine: Weapon X by Marc Cerasini is a delicious read, whether or not you've read the seminal Barry Windsor-Smith version (if you haven't and you're a Wolverine fan, shame on you, it's ISBN # 0785100334. Treat yourself, you'll be glad you did). If you haven't read the Weapon X graphic novel, then this is a rare opportunity for you, a chance to see how Logan was forced to have his Adamantium skeleton. If you have read the BWS version, then prepare to be delighted by tons of new detail.

Without giving away much of the plot, the story begins with Logan between government spy jobs, down on his luck, and hiding out. But what little luck he does have evaporates when he is captured by a secret Canadian organization. Soon he's undergoing hellish surgery and experiments, designed to completely change who he is inside and out.

The writing is very well executed, the plot fast, and the imagery intriguing. There is a sub story about Logan back from his spy days that is completely unique to this novel, so even if you think you know all there is to know about everyone's favorite Canadian mutant, check this one out anyway. It's got enough new things to keep regular X-Men readers happy, and is well told enough that a newcomer to X-Men and Wolverine would not be lost.

Not recommended for children as there is reference to sexual abuse and torture. But recommended to everyone else as a fine addition to your library.

2 out of 5 stars Not a good read if you aren't into heavy techno talk.......2006-04-25

Wolverine is my absolute fave X-men, and I was looking forward to reading this until I actually started reading. The book relies heavily on scientific techno jargon that I found boring with little action going on for Wolverine who seems to spend most of the book drifting in and out of memories that were only half lucid. While it can be interesting to learn about how and why he had the adamantium bonded to him, I wasn't really wanting to go as in-depth technically on the process. Great if you're a scientist or techno geek, but bad if you were just looking for a fun read. There are much better books out there that actually show more action and have less textbook explanation of things. Very disappointing overall.

5 out of 5 stars Myostatin Blocking Enzymes Aren't Fiction.......2006-04-25

Although I rarely read comics, I was somewhat familiar with the back story of Woverine before picking up Wolverine: Weapon X, and really enjoyed Cerasini's take on the events. I especially liked how he took certain things into consideration regarding the adamantium bonding process which had always bothered me (an explanation of how they were able to bond the metal to the bone without interrupting important biological processes - sorry, you'll have to read it to find out).

Something readers might find interesting is that the myostatin blocking enzymes used to enhance Wolverine's muscularity are not fiction. Although the "myostatin blockers" advertised in bodybuilding magazines are bogus, there are real drugs for blocking myostatin currently undergoing clinical testing for FDA approval, and scientists are already capable of altering genes to block myostatin production. A search for Sejin Lee (one of the main scientists involved) and myostatin will turn up some interesting reading for those who want to know more about just how muscular a person (or mutant in this case) can become when myostatin production is blocked.

5 out of 5 stars WARNING: This is not your little brothr's X-men.......2006-04-12

For reasons I won't get into, I was skeptical of this novel at first, but I quickly became a fan. Why? The typical prose novel based on a superhero is simplistically YA in its prose style, tame in its content, and formulaic in approach. This one is none of the above. It is a stunning and disturbing modern horror story. It's also dead brilliant, and it is not for children (or anyone who has absolutely no knowledge of Wolverine beyond the Hollywood movies).

From the surreal first page of Wolverine: Weapon X, even the first sentence, you know you're not in your little brother's world of formulaic superheroes. Cerasini starts by giving us Logan's intense, fractured point-of-view, as he drifts in and out of consciousness at the start of the story. What we are reading are splinters of Logan's present, past, and the fractured wanderings of his mind trying to make sense of what's happening to him at the start of the drama.

No sentence or idea in this first chapter is thrown away. The language and disturbing rantings have been carefully wrought, laced with meaning and metaphor based on Logan's long history.

(The Earth's water cycle, for instance, is clearly a reference to Logan's own eternal warrior back story, which, yes indeed, has been explored in previous Wolverine graphic novels published by Marvel.)

This book, which was also published by Marvel Press in hardcover, is based on Marvel's own Barry Windsor-Smith graphic novel of the same name (Wolverine: Weapon X). This story is just one chapter in the very long history of the mutant named Logan, whose transformation into Wolverine was a century-long process.

Wolverine: Weapon X is an "origin story" in the sense that it informs us how Logan came to gain his adamantium skeleton. As you'll see by the end of this book, what Logan goes through solidifies more than his skeleton. Like Windsor-Smith's original graphic novel, Cerasini taps into the deadly dark anti-hero tradition (begun in comics by the greats - Alan Mooore and Frank Miller).

The story opens when Logan (a down and out, ex-Canadian special forces solider) is kidnapped and taken to a remote Canadian laboratory where technicians begin their experiments on him under the direction of a disturbingly driven genius (the professor).

The original graphic novel never explains why the professor had this done, or who the technicians were that would choose to participate in Logan's excruciating transformation. Cerasini fills in these blanks, painting each minor character with disturbing clarity and realism, showing us their back story and what brought them to a point in their lives when they would agree to serve the professors ends in this way. We also find out why this enigmatic (and utterly creepy) professor chose to transform Logan (the reason does not disappoint).

The plotline faithfully follows Windsor-Smith's graphic novel while exploring it in ingenious ways (thus constantly surprising and intriguing this reader). This is dark, fierce material, and Cerasini rises to the occasion, conveying not just explosive prose but a multi-dimensional backdrop of the characters involved in what amounts to Wolverine's crucifixion.

Logan does rise again, transformed, at the other end of this dark tunnel, emerging from this harrowing drama as the mutant with the adamantium claws. And when you turn the last page, the words "tortured past," will have a very specific meaning when you hear them applied to this particular comic book anti-hero.

My recommendations are as follows:
- If you want a traditional good guy gets bad guy superhero story, or if you are literally a child of 14 years or younger, move along. This book is not for you.

- If you are someone who is only familiar with Wolverine from the X-Men movies, you might want to first read Windsor-Smith's original Marvel graphic novel. Be warned: what you saw on the Hollywood screen is only one aspect of Wolverine/Logan.

- If you are a fan, you might want to keep in mind that Marvel Press published and--DUH--therefore vetted and approved all aspects and details of Logan's history in this fine novel.

-If you want to read a fantastically written, brutally haunting modern horror novel, then you won't be disappointed with Wolverine: Weapon X by Marc Cerasini. It's a fierce, disturbing, beautifully violent tale ingeniously told. True fans of Marvel's Wolverine (as opposed to Hollywood's) should not miss it.

4 out of 5 stars A happy Logan, in a world gone to hell.......2002-12-21

When the Legion Quest storyline ended, an alternate universe was created due to the fact that Legion went back in time to kill Magneto but accidently killed Charles Xavier. Since Xavier died, there was no X-Men to stop Apocalypse from taking over America and most of the world. This alternate reality, The Age of Apocalypse, put all the regular X-books on hold for four issues and replaced them with they're AoA versions. Weapon X (Wolverine) tells the storyline revolving around Logan (he is not called Wolverine in this alternate reality) who in all his long lifetime in the regular X-universe was never able to find happiness. In the Age of Apocalypse, Logan is finally with the woman he loves: Jean Grey, and he couldn't be happier (then again he is missing a hand). The intense love and emotion between the two should be seen to be believed. Logan has an early run in with Havok, and we learn the past between Logan and Cyclops (in this reality Cyclops and Havok are servants to Apocalypse) and how Jean Grey ties in (to find out a bit more read the X-Man TPB). Eventually Jean must leave Logan to find out some info, and Logan has a few battles with Pierce and other cyborgs. Carol Danvers and Gateway make some appearances, but sometimes the action lags and the story can become a bit incoherent. The art is great and Logan's narration is as well, and is sometimes darkly hilarious. All in all, this is a good chapter in the Age of Apocalypse saga.

4 out of 5 stars In hell on earth - one man finally found his hapiness.......2001-06-06

Welcome to hell on earth. North America is ruled by an evil mutant called Apocalypse. His kingdom only lives by one rule: Survivial of the fittest. Humans are regarded as the lower class and even not all mutants will be survive in this world. This all happened because Professor Charles Xavier never existed. Thus he never got to form the X-Men to appose Apocalypse.

To prevent Apocalypse from taking over the rest of the world, the Human High Counsil in Europe decide to bomb the US - making sure Apocalypse doesn't go any further. They are aided by Weapon X and his one true love, Jean Grey. If you know Wolverine, you know that his life has been hell in the original timeline. But in this one, where everyone is in danger, he is happy - because he is with the one who he truly loves. And he sacrificed one of his hands for her.

This induvidual story is quite good and it features a nice cameo from Carol Danvers. The art is above average and the usual narration by Logan is present as well.

These stories won't mean much if you haven't read this AoA storyline from the start. If you get this, I recommend you get all the other AoA TPBs too. For a complete reading list of it, see my X-Men: LegionQuest review.

5 out of 5 stars The most outstanding tale of the AOA X-men ever conceived.......1999-10-02

With the most incredible drawings and eloborate storyline, this 4 parter stands head and shoulders ablove any thing else you will ever read in comic book form. Without going into detail of the plot (and ruining the story), this is a perfect world for Logan. If you have followed the life of the man called Logan, you will know only too well that his life has been cursed with tradegy, marred with the failure to find happiness. In this story, in a messed up world filled with familiar messed up people, it brought a tear to my eye to see his one true mission succeed. He is battle hardened, scarred, tortured, not the Logan we know. This would be reason enough to despise the world in which they put him. The only thing available to him which makes me love this world so much is his sidekick, his companion, his soulmate, his best friend and his lover. This book is worth ten times it's cost to see Logan & Jean Gray together. What a perfect world.

Book Description

The Story of Weapon X. Before joining the X-Men, Wolverine was simply a directionless loner mutant named Logan. Weapon X isn't just another story about the Wolverine you know and love. It's the cruel story of Logan's transformation into Wolverine, as seen through the eyes of his tormentors. Spearheading the Weapon X program are Dr. Benjamin Cornelius and Carol Hines -- their goal is to create the ultimate weapon, an indestructible man -- and then enslave him. Their gift of invulnerability comes at a price to all those involved...especially their victim. Logan will lose his humanity, and many people will lose their lives. As Logan manages to free himself from his captors, a brutal wave of violence affects all those involved. From the bloody aftermath of Logan's transformation, all involved in the Weapon X program endure their own personal change...via guilt, ambition, and humanity. Can anyone survive the carnage of this bioengineering team's twisted dream? Chances are slim, as the lines between man, beast, and monster are blurred for all the players in this closed experiement. Best-selling author, Marc Cerasini has spent time on the New York Times and USA Today best-seller's lists. His writing spans from children's picture books and young adult novels to adult mystery and military nonfiction. Along the way, he's managed to ghostwrite for Tom Clancy.

5 out of 5 stars The price of freedom...........2005-05-23

The origin of Wolverine, more specifically, how he got the metal skeleton, is the starting point for this intense techno-thriller with a twist. Here, the weapon IS the man.

Is it gorey? Yes. Is this the kind of thing teenage boys want to see? Yes. Does it serve a purpose? Yes! The staff of the Weapon X facility are a group of sadists who lie to themselves about Logan's humanity so they can conduct their experiments with an air of intellectual superiority. Logan's revenge on the doctors and lab techs, as violent as it is, stands in exact opposition to the high-tech torture he suffered at their hands. The swift and brutal deaths dealt out by Logan to his captors forces them to recognize their own humanity, even if it is just for the last few seconds of life they have left to them.

The subplot, a secret mission to North Korea, is a nicely drawn counterpoint to the horrors Logan suffers at the secret military complex. He is revealed to be an excellent soldier; smart, tough, capable, able to adapt, improvise, and overcome. He displays friendship, loyalty, and an abundance of natural courage. Just the kind of man you'd want at your side in any type of conflict.

I highly recommend this book!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing -- where's Logan in all of this?.......2005-03-02

I was so excited to buy this book...

...but it was a real disappointment. I read it in one sitting, and it quickly blurred into a meaningless gorefest. People don't just die -- they die in a spatter of blood, intestines, and brain fragments spread across a ten-foot swath, the uselessness of which is commented upon by many of the book's side characters. I have no problem with gore when it's done well, but it must also serve a purpose. After the first time or two, this doesn't, not even to introduce newbies to Wolverine. Fans know what Wolvie is capable of, but there are a lot better ways to showcase it.

Having the story alternate between Logan's mission and his torture as he becomes Weapon X mitigates some of the unendingly useless carnage, but it isn't enough. Too much of Logan is missing. As Frank Miller and Chris Claremont would be the first to tell you, Logan is a lot more than a berserker, but that's about all this book shows. I wanted to see a lot more of the ex-samaurai, Patch, the X-Man. Wolverine is such a rich, complex character. That Logan is not in this book.

The text is reasonably well written, which is the only reason I gave it two stars. The story had a lot of promise but didn't deliver.

5 out of 5 stars Keeps you nailed in your seat.......2005-01-06

This is good and tough. But then, Logan is, his life story is.
The Weapon X storyline, written and drawn by Barry Windsor-Smith, is the basis for this novel. I guess this book might be a bit difficult to understand without that knowledge, or without a bit of background information on the mutants and humans involved. Descriptions of the characters are only minimal which from time to time could pose a problem for those who don't know what this is all about. For all the others, it doesn't. It pushes your imagination even further.
Because the graphic novel Weapon X ranks among the all time best I suggest to those who don't know it, just buy both and enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Weapon X---Wicked Sci-Fi!!!.......2004-11-17

I had a lot of doubts when thinking about Wolverine without pictures. I read the Barry-Windsor Smith story a long time ago, and the graphic novel story is excellent. But Cerasini the author of this book does a great job of capturing the feel of the original story while at the same time telling a much different story and it is great in its own right. He showed facets of Logan's personallity and memories that I would have never thought of. Plus, the perspectives of the scientists and the other characters really keep the plot suspenseful and dark. They should continue this series on Logan. Plus, the jacket art and art on the actual book look phenomenal!
