Customer Reviews:
Similar study material compared to the actual ISEE test taken 02/03/07.......2007-02-17
Recommended for those students taking the ISEE. Have yet to use the SSAT study guide.
ISEE preparation, best available.......2006-11-03
This book is the best organized and most comprehensive available. However, it still is lacking. I've been tutoring this test for 5 years, and it is especially hard to differentiate the middle level and upper level exams. You can tell PR struggles with this differentiation as well.
Math - By far its most useful section. PR does a good job of covering all of the concepts you will need to know, as well as providing some solid "ISEE-like" questions. The book doesn't have many difficult questions for students aiming for the 90th+ percentile, and is limited in quantitative comparisons.
Synonyms - Just study vocabulary (the PR list is a good place to start), and use PR questions for practice. I personally think PR over-sells strategies such as positive/negative.
Sentence Completions - Decent strategies, decent practice...if you need more questions and your taking the middle or upper level ISEE, buy an SAT book from College Board and use the SCs. You can also use some of the math questions.
Passage-based reading - Horrible!
Practice tests - Good practice.

Book Description
Abby Tyler is a woman on a mission. For more than thirty years, Abby has been desperately searching for her childan infant stolen at birth before she even had a chance to see it. To locate her child and end years of heartache, Abby formulates a plan that will bring her face to face with a past she has tried to forget.
Elsewhere, three strangers receive word that they've each won a contest that, oddly, they don't recall entering. None of them are prepared for the luxurious and erotic prize that awaits thema week at The Grove. This exclusive anything-goes, no-questions-asked resort in the Southern California desert is an oasis so remote, that the only way in or out is by airplane. Amid the glamour of movie stars and the super-rich, the three strangersCoco, Sissy, and Opheliafind themselves embroiled in a baffling mystery involving the reclusive spa owner, Abby Tyler.
As a deadly sandstorm approaches the resort, a murderer stalks the trapped guests. Someone will die, someone will find love, and all three women will come to astonishing realizations about themselves. From the sensual heat of the desert to the corrupt underworld of Las Vegas, author Kathryn Harvey delivers a stimulating tale with Private Entrance.

A Woman With a Past.......2007-08-14
Emmy Lou Pagan is on the lam. When she was 16, she was convicted of a murder she didn't commit and sentenced to life in prison. She had been pregnant at the time, and the prison matrons stole her baby and sold it on the black market, telling her it had died. When she finds out the truth, she escapes prison and devotes her life to finding her child. She changes her name to Abby Tyler, and over the years, becomes a successful resort owner. Her resort is The Grove, located in the desert not far from Palm Springs, so remote that guests come and go by airplane rather than car. The Grove is a discreet, anything goes type of place frequented by celebrities and anyone else with the cash to live out a few of their fantasies.
Ophelia, Coco, and Sissy are three very different women who all receive notice that they won a contest entitling them to a week's stay at the Grove. Coco, a police psychic, goes to the resort in search of her soul mate, eagerly hooking up with any man who seems like he might fit the bill, yet finding herself attracted to a man named Kenny who does a memory act at the resort. Kenny doesn't seem to fit any of the criteria Coco's crystal had promised her soul mate would have, but she can't seem to stop thinking about him. Sissy receives a nasty surprise when she gets to the resort, causing her to examine her entire life and marriage. Ophelia comes to do some thinking. She's got an intense personal dilemma on her hands, and hopes to be able to work it out at the resort. None of the women can remember entering a contest, but they all accept the prize for their own reasons. Abby Tyler has one reason for having invited the three women: one of them is her long-lost daughter.
While the guests at the resort live out their fantasies and work out their personal issues, a dark force is at work in Las Vegas. Mike Fallon is now an important businessman, but he's had to silence a few people who know about his sordid past along the way. Now, Abby Tyler is looking into his baby smuggling activities, and he needs to silence her before his precious daughter's wedding to a socially prominent man. While Abby Tyler and her guests go about their business, Fallon concocts a plan that could destroy everything.
Kathryn Harvey seems to have the formula down for a good thriller starring a woman with a past. Her two previous novels, Butterfly and Stars, did it a little better than this one, but this is still a good book on its own merits. Whereas Harvey's earlier efforts delved deeply into the heroine's back story, following her from her humble beginnings to the successful woman she becomes, this book merely made a few references to the past and dealt mostly with the present, concentrating more on sex and fantasies than the actual story. That's great news for readers who go for that kind of thing, but it's a bit disappointing for someone who loved the depth in Harvey's earlier books. This is definitely an erotic thriller, but at least it refrains from using crude terms or being outright unrealistic in its descriptions. While her earlier work was better, Kathryn Harvey can still pen a great book.
Finally another Kathryn Harvey book!!!!.......2006-03-14
In my opinion, this book is a sgood as Butterfly and Stars. I read it in one day, I could not put it down!
Wonderful book!.......2005-09-08
This was a fantastic-and super spicy!-addition to both Butterfly and Stars. Kathryn Harvey/Barbara Wood is one of the most gifted writers in America. She can take numerous characters and a wide variety of individual storylines and magically pull them all together into one fantastic, sexy book! I truly couldn't put this one down once I started reading it.
Kathryn Harvey returns!.......2005-07-27
If you've read (and re-read and re-read) "Butterfly", then you are familiar with Kathryn Harvey. "Private Entrance" isn't a sequel to "Butterfly" (although there is a passing reference to that book's main character Beverly Highland); it stands on its own. Ms. Harvey has a great way of starting out with many diverse threads and slowly weaving them until they all come together in the end, and this book is a great example of her talent. Plenty of mystery and action, beautiful and graphic descriptions of a desert resort we'd all love to visit, drop-jaw revelations...and since this is Kathryn Harvey, lots of hot sex (unless you are inclined to jump in and out of a cold shower every few pages, I recommend keeping a spritzer bottle of cold water nearby!). Welcome back, K.H.!

Game Plan for Getting into Private School.......2000-05-05
Peterson's starts with a general Planning Calendar beginning in 7th grade. It discusses what Private Schools offer and how to consider which type of school is best for your child. How to start looking for a school and how to help your child prepare for the application process. What to look for in a school and how to narrow down choices. There is a section about Financial Aid and finally the transition into Private School. It does not describe particular schools.
I thought the book covers this subject well and I have read from several different sources.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book for all High School Students.......2005-09-11
This is a great, informative book that is definately a must for hish school students. Im a senior now and I was so confused about the college admission process and what I need to do to make my application stand out. This is an EXCELLENT book. It's so well written and not voring at all. It has so many facts that you would've never knew about. I am so much more informed about applying to colleges now and I feel like I can get accepted anywhere. To al high schoolers who are starting on their applications and are confuse- GET THIS BOOK!
very useful.......2005-03-11
A very helpful and exhaustive book. Allen has a lot that you need to hear, and you probably have not heard it before.
The book, unlike most college guide books, is not carefully divided based on colleges or regions. Instead, it has more of a narrative structure, although the chapters are divided by aspects of the admissions process.
However, it's very absorbing and witty writing. So interesting that I read it from cover to cover, even though I'm even not in the market for going to college! It was a real eye-opener.
I do have some complaints, though. Don't get the wrong idea from them, however. Allen's work is, overall, is a brisk, useful, and amusing read. And the gripes are:
1. The book is written almost exclusively for traditional college applicants (i.e., 17 years old, currently in high school, etc.) Non-traditional or transfer applicants will therefore find the book's strategies largely (but not entirely) useless.
2. The thing was evidently hastily written: there are countless typos, misspellings, printer's errors, etc. Likely this won't bother you too much given your probable reasons for picking it up in the first place, but it does make me wonder about the reliability of the numbers Allen is reporting. Here, for example, is a disturbing contradiction: [p. 186]
". . . Yale filled 43% of available seats for the Class of 2007 with Early Decision applicants, and those applicants were admitted at a 22% rate . . ."
and then, later, in the same paragraph (!):
"A small number of top colleges . . . most notably Yale, do not fill a significant portion of the freshman class with early decision candidates."
3. The author has what appears to be a very low opinion of UC Berkeley, in contrast to the majority of students, teachers, and college counselors I have worked with. Though this is never stated explicitly, his dissenting view is unmistakable:
"Of the roughly thirty top colleges in America, only six -- the Air Force Academy, Cal Tech, Stanford, Rice, U. Chicago and Northwestern -- aren't on the east coast. [p. 241]"
4. The thing is seriously disorganized. The author, aware of this, warns you about this upfront, but still, it's disorganized all the same. As just one example, suppose you only need help with your essay. So you read his essay section. Unknown to you, there is a lot of potentially useful information on college essays in the "strategies" section which you wouldn't have discovered if you had merely dipped into the "essay" section.
The only solution is to read the entire thing through from cover to cover. I don't think you'll regret this, though.
This book helped our family separate fact from fiction!.......2005-02-11
I read four other books in addition to this book to prepare as a parent for our son's college process. I found this book to be the most realistic. The author does not present the topic of college admissions in a pollyanna manner the way others books did. He tells it like it is or pretty much the way we discovered the process to be. I highly recommend that parents read this book and cite the gist of the book to your prospectice college student over time- Too much reality can demotivate/demoralize your child. Other books that were recommended by counselors, school, etc., placed the colleges on a pedestal as if they are altrusitic without a profit motive in mind. We found the opposite as we went through the college process. Andrew Allen's book prepared us in a way that produced a positive college search process for our family.
SIMPLY THE BEST.......2003-12-21
Simply put, there is no book that offers as much information, advice and opinions as Trade Secrets. Most admissions books offer 1/10th what this book offers -- you would be INSANE to apply to college without first reading this book. I suspect that the majority of the bad reviews are from high school counselors or admissions offices--Allen takes both to task. Beware: if you can't take strong advice (that's wickedly helpful), then don't buy this book. If you want some great insider help, then get a copy.
Cynical, poorly-written and inaccurate.......2003-11-03
Interestingly, Andrew Allen never tells you where he himself went to college. Given how poorly written and repetitive this book is, and how unappreciative of the true value of a great education, it's just as well for the reputation of his alma mater. Allen fits Oscar Wilde's definition of the cynic -- he knows the price of everything, the value of nothing. He makes ridiculous claims about schools' reputations such as that Dartmouth has a reputation for being antagonistic towards men whereas schools such as Davidson and Washington & Lee are known to be "very male-friendly" -- a term he leaves completely undefined. Allen also says that "if you can get into Stanford, then you can get into Yale, Chicago, or Georgetown, all of which offer a better education." Says who?
This book is all about a not-very-talented man who has fallen in love with the position of power he has assumed as a self-anointed guru of college admissions. If you are a bright, hardworking person who wants to go to a great college to be in the company of other bright, hardworking people, you will want to avoid the company of Andrew Allen before you get there. There are a slew of better college admissions book to turn to, including "How to Get Into the Top Colleges" by Richard Montauk.

The Meaning of a Christian College.......2006-03-08
In response to the review above, I believe some explaining needs to occur. The official definition of a "Christian College" as generally accepted across higher education is any school who only hires Christians as full-time employees. The accrediting organization for these Christian schools is the CCCU (Coalition of Christian Colleges and Universities). This book only reviews the 130(?) schools that are members of the CCCU. Both Catholic and Lutheran affiliated schools hire non-Christians thus they are not members of the CCCU.
All that being said the book is okay, it does provide useful information about the schools it covers, but not more than you could find on their websites in 5 minutes.
False Advertising.......2003-09-16
There are at least a thousand Christian colleges and universities in this country. This book is a guide to Baptist and Presbyterian and a few conservative Methodist and other Reformed church schools. There are no Catholic schools listed, no Lutheran schools listed, etc.
As a Lutheran, I thought this book was a very bad purchase. I thought they would include Lutheran colleges (there are forty two of them, but not one of them is listed, nor are they even mentioned).
Don't buy this book unless you are a very conservative Reform Christian, and want to know only about the hundred or so schools that come directly out of this tradition. Some of these are probably good schools, and I'm sure they are good people, but they aren't what I was looking for. I'd rather go to a Catholic or a Lutheran school since I'm a Lutheran (ELCA).

cracking the coop/hspt.......2006-11-05
The book is good. However, it was not carefully edited. There are mistakes in the number sequence on the HSPT answer sheet which leads to confuse when you are trying to do the sample test. There are also several mistakes in questions.
OUTDATED.......2005-09-17
Please beware, this book is 5 years old and thus outdated in several aspects. For example, there is no memory section on the test anymore. I do not know if Barron's updated its test book recently, but when I took the COOP in 2003, there was no memory section and so both the Princeton Review and Barron's study books were outdated, not to mention several typos and editing mistakes. The Princeton review was not tough enough, and the Barron's book was too tough, in relation to the actual test.
my review.......2001-11-12
this helped my daughter to stop worrying about high school entrance exams
Best book available..but beware! BIG error in Answer sheet.......2000-10-28
Great book. I plan on using this to prep 8th graders for the HSPT in Pawtucket, RI this month. Content is excellent, layout and design are very appropriate for this age audience. It's an easy read that is packed with useful techniques and strategies, yet it's not as dense as other test prep texts available.
Big caution however. Master answer sheet for use with both practice exams is missing a space for responses to question #41-49!! Glad I caught this one before my class.
Great Book but a BIG word of Caution.......2000-10-27
Of the books available to prepare 8th graders for the High School Placement Test, in terms of content, layout and tips/strategies, this book is the best around. I plan on using it for a course I'm piloting beginning this weekend (10/28) in Pawtucket, RI.
HOWEVER, I've discovered that the sample answer sheet in the back of the book (for the HSPT) designed for use with the two practice exams is missing space for responses to questions #41-50! I'm hoping this isn't reflective of editing done in the rest of the book, but I wont know till I use the materials in a classroom setting.
I've called Random House, who has notified Princeton Review but as of this writing they have not responded to my call for help in resolving this issue. At the moment, I'm scrambling around for an answer sheet. Wish me luck.

Practice Tests.......2005-10-15
I got this book for my daughter in 5th grade who will soon be taking the SSAT. I liked that it explained the test and included a practice test, the answers and explained the answers. Getting to take a practice test will be a big help to my daughter so that she will not go in cold. It would be nice if the book had the practice test on seperate sheets or a cd rom.

Book Description
The Princeton Review realizes that acing the SSAT and ISEE exams is very different from getting straight A’s in school. We don’t try to teach you everything there is to know about English and math—only what you’ll need to score higher on the exam. There’s a big difference. In Cracking the SSAT & ISEE, we’ll teach you how to think like the test writers and
·Correctly answer analogy and synonym questions even when you’re not sure what all of the words mean
·Ace the reading comprehension section by learning to spot main ideas, topic sentences, and key words
·Crack the general math section by learning to avoid wrong answer choices that look right but are planted to fool you
·Learn how to turn complicated algebra problems into simple word problems
·Simplify the SSAT writing sample and the ISEE essay using a sure-fire, step-by-step approach
This book includes five full-length practice tests, with questions like the ones you’ll see on the actual SSAT and ISEE.
