Book Description

History and good storytelling combine in Craig and Janet Parshall’s exciting new series: the Thistle and the Cross.

It’s 1546. The great William Wallace—“Braveheart”—is long dead. But not the Scottish people’s desire for freedom. The truths of the Reformation have set Scotland aflame again...

When Ransom Mackenzie witnesses one of the Scottish Reformers being burnt at the stake, he becomes an ardent follower of the great Protestant preacher John Knox.

In hiding, Ransom meets the captivating Margaret, who shares his religious convictions. But when he joins Knox in London, the allure of the court...and a young aristocratic lady...enthrall him. Will he return to the deepest desire of his spirit? What kind of love will he ultimately pursue?

I really enjoy Christian fiction. Craig Parshall is true to his faith and the books are very exciting. Well worth reading anything he writes. This goes for all of his books you have listed. All 5 stars and great reading.

5 out of 5 stars gotta read it.......2006-12-05

It is 1546 in St. Andrews, Scotland, the land is aflame with the bodies of Protestant Reformists, and Ransom Mackenzie finds himself being used of God to help lead the reform sweeping the country. His tutor and mentor is none other than John Knox. The two of them embark on a journey to change the land from one of unyielding and persecuting Catholicism to one devoted to the Evangel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
In "Crown of Fire" Craig and Janet Parshall do a superb job of weaving history with captivating fiction, as they bring to life that forthright and surefire spiritual leader, John Knox. His biography is thoroughly intertwined in this novel so that at the conclusion one feels to have stepped back in time and actually experienced knowing him personally.
The reader of "Crown of Fire" is taken through the short reign of King Edward, the terrifying and bloody reign of Queen Mary, and finally left with Queen Elizabeth allowing light in an otherwise spiritually darkened country. Through all of this, Ransom and his bonnie Highland lass, Margaret, grow closer to the Lord despite persecution in both England and Scotland.
A most fascinating historic novel, "Crown of Fire" is a must-read for today's Christian. The history lesson is complete, the heart has been warmed by the love of a husband and wife, and above all a challenge has been issued to all Christians to stand faithful to their Lord.

5 out of 5 stars A Pleasure to Read - Passionate, Poignant and Powerful.......2005-09-05

Crown of Fire is the captivating historical tale of the trials of John Knox and the events that happened during the Reformation. Filled with poignant scenes of tribulation and images of perseverance, Crown of Fire is a great tutorial of how Christians have endured persecution.

The Parshall's know how to create passion for truth by combining historical evidence with current day implications and instilling a love for the Word of God that makes the book and God's Word come to life.

This is a must read book for anyone who loves history, cares about those who are and who have been persecuted and loves the Word of God!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Modern day Agatha Christie/E.A. Poe.......2007-06-27

If you enjoy a good, old fashioned ghost story, Phil Rickman's Merrily Watkins series is right up your alley. Merrily, an extremely loveable and believable character, is the vicar of a church on the Welsh border. She's also the head of the "Deliverance" ministry (exorcisms for those not in the CofE). The settings and tales are classic and gothic, yet the entire series maintains a very modern feeling. Dealing with turn of the century and older hauntings and curses while simultaneously handling the political intrigue of the church and a wise cracking teenage daughter who sees herself as more spiritual than religious keep Merrily busy and very much ground these books in the present. All of this is backed up by a firm footing in the mystery genre. Rickman is big in the UK, but just starting to get a foothold in the states as people discover these gems. These books defy classification, but once you read them you will be hooked. This book, in particular, really takes the series up a notch and bodes nothing but a wonderful future for the series.

3 out of 5 stars Black Christianity and White Magic.......2007-05-15

This book largely delivers on an enjoyable plot as a supernatural murder mystery. The material is well researched - some of the characters looking remarkably like versions of real-life characters from the not-so-distant past. The plot bounces along at a good pace, though it could almost be categorised as U entertainment, with a tendency to gloss over detail when it comes to anything that might be considered distressing (e.g. violence, sex). I enjoyed the book and found it an entertaining read, it just seemed a bit hollow in the action, which if it had matched the dialogue and descriptions would have raised it from 3 to 5 stars in my estimation.

5 out of 5 stars Coul not stop reading it!.......2005-09-20

This is the first book I have read by Phil Rickman. I shop for books based on customer reviews and he really should have a larger following. This book weaves the eerie legends of old into modern day perfectly. Every Character became real. While reading this book when I went to put it down it took me a little bit to realize I was still in my own home...because Rickman takes you there. I have since bought two more of his books and look forward to all of them based on his writing ability.

2 out of 5 stars Boring.......2005-07-06

After the 5 star reviews I purchased this first, for me, Phil Rickman book.Unfortunately I was bored with the whole thing. I did not find the characters appealing. There was too much explaining and background material. I slogged through the first part then skipped until the end.

5 out of 5 stars "Thus We Banish Winter".......2005-04-06

I believe that it was Lord Peter Wimsey who once made a habit of collecting vicars, one of the more idiosyncratic of British countryside characters. Be that as it may, I'm sure the venerable master detective never anticipated a vicar quite like Merrily Watkins, determined minister, caring mother, and deliverance consultant (exorcist) in the service of the Anglican Church on the Welsh border. Spiritual and personal crises have lead Merrily to this point in her life, and her investigations of not-so-normal events and challenges have made her the principal focus of Phil Rickman's mystery stories.

When events give a pair of Pagan witches control of the site of a ruined church, Merrily senses trouble. Not from the pagans, but from Nick Ellis, a priest from the more evangelical side of the Anglican Church. Lately come from America, Ellis has set himself up in Radnor valley, where his style seems to suit the natives. He is outraged by the presence of the couple and sets about declaiming and defaming in an effort to oust something he considers a tool of the devil.

Called in to mediate what appears to be a dangerous situation, Merrily discovers that the danger lies in more directions than expected. A death, a mysterious disappearance, and a host of dark rituals in unexpected places lead Merrily to realize that something wicked does indeed haunt the valley and that the pagans, Robin and Betty, are only come lately to a dark tale of greed and superstition.

Rickman, who started writing horror stories, has really found his métier writing what are really detective stories with a supernatural bent. He has created a set of likable characters - Merrily herself, 16-year-old daughter Jane, Jane's boyfriend Eirion, and the omnipresent Gomer, his wife lately passed away, happy to be helping Merrily in a tangled web of intrigue and murder. Other volumes introduce even more characters, and the village of Ledwardine and its surrounding parishes spring alive with both charm and tension.

One of Rickman's talents is his ability to build a long and detailed story arc from several angles. This keeps the action fresh. Be warned though that Rickman starts the windup to his endings early and can build the denouement steadily for over 100 pages of the book. He never loses that action though, and these long books are usually quick entertaining reads. While this isn't the first in the series, it plays well on its own, so by all means consider it a possible starting point.

I liked this book a lot, because Phobos carries out his plan to drain Elyon's power. Luckily, the Guardians save Elyon by creating an Astral Drop (or exact double) of her. Phobos uses his idea on the Astral Drop, so he really doesn't get any power at all! He gets very upset, so it's pretty funny at the end! It's also kind of sad, because something bad happens to Caleb. Read to find out!

4 out of 5 stars Another good book from the W.I.T.C.H. series........2005-07-01

This is the eleventh book in the W.I.T.C.H. novel series, about five young teenage girls - Will, Irma, Taranee, Cornelia, and Hay Lin - who have been chosen as the Guardians of the Veil that separates Earth from Metamoor, a world that is ruled by the evil Prince Phobos.

The final battle for Metamoor is approaching. The Guardians are worried about their friend, Elyon. Elyon grew up with them in Heatherfield, but she turned out to be a member of Metamoor's royal family, who had been brought to Earth for safekeeping after her parents died. Although her older brother, the evil Prince Phobos, has lost some of his influence over her, Elyon is still under his power. He has announced Elyon's coronation as Queen, but Elyon doesn't entirely trust him. And the Guardians feel he may be up to something. They travel to Metamoor, hoping they can convince Elyon that something is truly wrong before it is too late.

This was another good book from the W.I.T.C.H. series. It would be very confusing for new readers, but I'd recommend it to all the readers who have read the first ten books in the series. I can't wait to read the next book in the series which concludes this story arc. I'd recommend the series mostly to young readers who enjoy fantasies with strong female characters. However I am much older then the target audience and enjoy this series a lot, especially the comic excerpts featured at the beginning and end of each book.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect finale to a wonderful series.......2001-03-30

This is IMO the best of Veryan's novels -- and that's saying something! She brings back many beloved characters to give the Sanguinet Saga a superb, breath-taking, action-packed, at times laugh-out-loud-funny finish. Charity and Mitchell are a wonderful match, and the growth of their relationship is handled beautifully. Having gotten to know these characters, and the pain in their pasts, through previous novels just makes their romance all the sweeter. I can't begin to count the number of times I've read it. I can open it to any page and immediately be entranced. FIND THIS BOOK!!!

5 out of 5 stars Sheer Perfection!.......2000-11-07

This is, quite simply, superb entertainment. Charity Strand, a lady of little beauty but lots of intelligence and personality, must help Mitchell Redmond save England from certain disaster. As they gallop on a forced march from Scotland to Brighton, riding against the clock to save the life of the Prince Regent, the two slowly fall in love. The romance is sweet and believable, and the adventure definitely adds to it rather than being superfluous subplot. Patricia Veryan has crafted an absolutely wonderful tale of love and intrigue. Highly recommended for all lovers of Regency romance.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Book.......1999-02-22

Sanguinet's Crown is a very funny novel. It is a joy to read. The quick wit that both Charity and Mitchell have lends a nice blend of humor to the book. You can not help but love the quick light plot. It is one of my favorite light romances of all time.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest Veryan of all time!!!!.......1997-10-30

Veryan is a queen among romance writers. Her wit and adventure add depth to the genre. This is her very best book. Plain but pert Charity Strand meets Mitchell Redmond under somewhat strained circumstances. They instantly dislike each other. When the very handsome Mitchell accidentally comes to the rescue of Charity, and they must dash across England together in a hair-raising adventure, animosity turns into something entirely different. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys romance or adventure. You will love these characters!

2 out of 5 stars Covers too many years.......2006-08-28

This book covers a wide swath, 1988 through 1996. That 8-year span includes major changes in the chassis, interior, and available engines for this car. The result is a manual that often provides only general guidance and leaves a lot out.

If you want to know how to change your brake pads, and basic maintenance jobs like that, this book will be helpful. It has good photographs and it's not very expensive. However, the lack of detail about less common troubleshooting and replacement jobs, and the lack of a complete wiring diagram, makes it less useful than some of the other Haynes manuals I've used.

2 out of 5 stars Its not specific enough. Especially for my year and model........1999-11-09

Rodolfo Usigli is perhaps Mexico’s most important and unquestionably its most controversial dramatist. The two plays presented here show the strong social and political satire which characterize his work—Crown of Light with its theme of false miracle and One of these Days with its interesting handling of political myth.

      Book Description

1290: Turmoil erupts when the seven-year-old queen of Scotland perishes en route to claim the crown. Two bitter foes -- John Balliol and Robert Bruce -- emerge as possible successors, but England's Edward I has his own designs on Scotland.

In London, Edward has expelled all Jews from his kingdom. Rachel de Anjou is heartbroken to leave behind her best friend, Isabel de Burke, and travel with her family to the Scottish border town of Berwick. Danger is everywhere, but the tall, dark Highlander Kieran MacDonald presents a risk of a different sort.

Isabel, appointed as lady-in-waiting to Edward's queen, Eleanor, is soon immersed in a world of privilege and peril where she attracts the notice of two men -- Henry de Boyer, an English knight, and Rory MacGannon, a Highland warrior and outlaw. Isabel and Rachel are soon reunited in Berwick, but as the enmity between Scotland and England reaches its violent peak, each woman must decide where her loyalty -- and her destiny -- lies.

      5 out of 5 stars Simply Spectacular!.......2007-09-20

Rivals For The Crown was an intense and riveting saga depicting just a piece of Scotland's tormented history and battle over the land. Kathleen Givens has a way of bringing the reader into the story and keeping you there she pulls no niceties as she tells the tale of these four people caught between two countries and loyalties. In particular the two female characters Rachel and Isabele endured personal tragedy and torment that saw both of these ladies forever changed as the novel concluded. Rachel in particular questions everything that she holds so dear. While novels depicting William Wallace in them have been told before, Kathleen Givens used him as a plot point to tell the story of people around him whom his plotting and scheming across Scotland in the hopes of saving her affected. The novel made me cry, terribly angry at the injustice of it all and finally smile as all characters overcame their battles and personal torment with heavy hearts but able to move forward and start anew in some cases start anew again to an uncertain future. Rivals For The Crown is a novel that historical enthusiasts will enjoy and read again.

      5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking! .......2007-09-20

The characters are so well-drawn as to feel real and comfortably familiar, making the time period come to life. Isabel and Rachel are both incredibly strong women and the author offers a compelling portrait of a lasting female friendship. Plenty of court intrigue, a truly stomach-turning bad guy, heart-stopping conflicts, and a burning romance will keep you on the edge of your seat. Beautifully written, gripping historical fiction.

5 out of 5 stars Like a bit of romance with your history?.......2007-08-29

Once again, Kathleen Givens proves herself a gifted writer of historical fiction with Rivals for the Crown. I like a good romance, but a burning bedroom scene on every other page is a bit wearing and Givens doesn't do that. Instead she creates believeable characters and a true love story within real history. You never find yourself thinking, they'd never do that or speak that way with her books. A ripping good yarn within historical fact (and she does her research well), I highly reccommend this book and the first book in this series, On a Highland Shore. I can't wait for the next one!

5 out of 5 stars Great historical tale.......2007-08-12

In 1290 Isabel de Burke and Rachel de Anjou have been best friends since they met as children. Although they vowed forever and still love one another as sisters, their friendship seems over as King Edward I decreed that all Jews must leave immediately. Rachel accompanied by her parents and sister leave England for Berwick where they buy an inn; at the same time Isabel becomes a lady-in-waiting to Queen Eleanor.

When Scotland's preadolescent queen dies while traveling to claim her throne, rivals John Balliol and Robert Bruce wage a civil war, which fits nicely into the plans of King Edward I to annex Scotland. Highlander Kieran MacDonald arrives at the de Anjou inn where he is meets and wants Rachel. However, he is fighting with Rory MacGannon to keep the English from ruling over Scotland so has no time for his heart's desire. Soon Isabel and Rachel reunite with the former and Rory attracted to each other. The two female friends are caught in the intrigue between England and Scotland and must decide between love for the Highlanders and love for England.

RIVALS FOR THE CROWN is a stupendous complex historical romance with the focus on the era. The epic saga uses the love between Rachel and Kieran, and Isabel and Rory to showcase the impact of war and royal intrigue on individuals as the two couples must make difficult choices that mean sacrifice of something cherished (love of country vs. beloved). Few authors can rival Kathleen Givens skill of transporting her audience so much so readers will feel they are along side the key cast members as late thirteenth century Scotland and to a lesser degree England comes alive once again (see the previous tale ON A HIGHLAND SHORE) in her wonderful novel.
