In Dinner With a Perfect Stranger, David Gregory relates the story of two men sharing a meal. The point of interest is knowing that one man believes he is Jesus. What will the other man think by the time the evening is through? The conversation begins, as one could imagine, scratching the dry hard surface of skepticism and doubt, but gently and persistently goes deeper and deeper, spiraling in from that starting point until they are eventually talking about the true stuff of life; the career drifting off-track, the marriage experiencing its own kind of strain, the life being lived where the philosophical questions of youth have given way to simply coping with modern day-to-day living.

Gregory's book is a refreshing reminder of what evangelical Christianity is at its very best -- a faith enlivened by the personal relationship between the Creator and the created. In the end, evangelical Christians are focused on who Jesus Christ is, and more specifically, who He is to them. Doctrinal stances, theological conundrums, questions about literal or non-literal Biblical interpretation, these are all beside the point for the certain type of Christian whose central focus is the life and person of Jesus.

In the Narnia series, C.S. Lewis touched on some of the core questions of religion, from the Christian viewpoint (is there a hell? What is heaven like, really? How can other religions be wrong, and just one be right?) Taking his cue from Lewis, Gregory does the same, realizing that questions like these come alive when they're in the context of a story, and we can be the third party, watching with interest while they are put on the table and considered. In the end, Gregory's book succeeds because of his willingness to approach interesting, hard questions like these. He is always, undoubtedly, aiming for the heart, but he realizes that to win the heart one must never forget that the mind has to come along for the ride. --Ed Dobeas

Book Description

You are Invited to a Dinner with Jesus of Nazareth

The mysterious envelope arrives on Nick Cominsky’s desk amid a stack of credit card applications and business-related junk mail. Although his seventy-hour workweek has already eaten into his limited family time, Nick can’t pass up the opportunity to see what kind of plot his colleagues have hatched.

The normally confident, cynical Nick soon finds himself thrown off-balance, drawn into an intriguing conversation with a baffling man who appears to be more than comfortable discussing everything from world religions to the existence of heaven and hell. And this man who calls himself Jesus also seems to know a disturbing amount about Nick’s personal life.

…………..

"You’re bored, Nick. You were made for more than this. You’re worried about God stealing your fun, but you’ve got it backwards.… There’s no adventure like being joined to the Creator of the universe." He leaned back off the table. "And your first mission would be to let him guide you out of the mess you’re in at work."
………….

As the evening progresses, their conversation touches on life, God, meaning, pain, faith, and doubt–and it seems that having Dinner with a Perfect Stranger may change Nick’s life forever.

5 out of 5 stars A Perfect Book.......2007-09-17

I received this book as a gift and enjoyed it so much that I bought it to give to my daughter-in-law. What would it be like to have dinner with Jesus? This book answers that question in a way that includes humor and an inside look at witnessing as Jesus might do it if he invited an unbeliever struggling with life's problems to dinner. A thought-provoking book beautifully written.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book.........2007-09-07

An excellent book. Perfect for the whole family to listen to. It is funny at times and then brings the right amount of drama at the right time. It makes you think things through and to a higher level.

5 out of 5 stars kateinkalifornia.......2007-08-29

A quick read, I actually read it twice. I will keep it and lend it out, but I want it back. It's one for my permanent collection.

1 out of 5 stars Reads like a religious brochure.......2007-08-24

My mom gave me this book to read as, one would guess, a last minute ditch effort to get me back into religion. Flipping through the book and seeing that it was only around 100 pages, and was printed in nice big "kid's book" letters, I figured, hey, what's a couple hours? I'm certainly willing to hear other viewpoints, and weigh them accordingly.

My first complaint is that if this is how religious people think that non-religious people think, feel, and act, then they are sorely mistaken. It's as if everyone that isn't Christian is empty, sad, and just sort of generally depressed. I guess using logic and consistency in your life makes you depressed? I guess not accepting whim-based rules about how to live life because "this book said so" and instead working rigorously to come up with a consistent set of morals and values makes you feel empty?

Anyways, the author attempts to make logical proofs, and in doing so, shows that he has no clue what a logical proof is. His undeniable, irrefutable proof that god exists is that an earlier part of the bible predicts a later part of the bible. Seriously. Nevermind that the later part of the bible was written a couple centuries after the fact, and by monks who were fully aware of the prophecies in Daniel, etc.

He also makes the claim that either Buddhism, or Hinduism, (i forget which, and i don't have the book in front of me) can't be true because it says that the universe is eternal. "How does that stack up against what your scientists have recently discovered?" alluding to the idea that we now *think* that the universe had a starting point. Regardless of the fact that we don't KNOW that it had a starting point, using science to dethrone one religion after another but not applying it to your own is a methodology only useful to those completely wrapped up in their own beliefs. One wishes the guy having dinner with Jesus would have responded with "well... that's funny... what does our science say about the idea of consciousness without matter? Or simultaneously being all-knowing and all-powerful? Or energy without any means to measure it? I guess that means your dad doesn't exist... which in turn means you don't exist, because you're one with your dad or whatever... so I guess I'm talking to myself... which would explain why the waiter has been looking at me strangely all night."

There was also a fantastic bit at the end about how if Jesus was in this guy's heart, he (Jesus) could love the guy's wife when he (the guy) couldn't anymore. Or something to that effect. I'd talk more about that, but I don't want to misquote it and have someone negate the whole review based on it, so I'll let it go.

I could go on for pages about the rediculous assumptions this book makes about how life should be lived, and the causes of evil in the world, etc. But I won't. Suffice it to say that this book is patently ridiculous, and actually rather offensive to truly free-thinking, open and honest people.

Then again, the author believes in a god that said "Thou Shall Not Kill" and then went on to murder millions and millions of people, as well as an entire planet's worth of animals that are completely amoral. So I guess anything goes, and he's as capable as anyone else to cherry-pick the parts that he does and doesn't support out of the bible.

5 out of 5 stars Profoundly entertaining........2007-08-04

This little book is captivating. It answered many questions that often come up about who God is. It was so interesting I couldn't put it down. I found it profoundly entertaining and historically accurate.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best if used with a printed copy.......2007-08-23

If you have never read Think and Grow Rich before, I would suggest reading the print version first (or at least have a copy handy). Since you will more than likely want to re-read or refer back to certain passages (i.e., the exercises that you are asked to perform).

I've read it several times over the years and thought that the audio book would be a good way to turn my 40 minute commute to work into more productive time.

Unlike the abridged version, there are no anecdotes from Napoleon Hill interspersed throughout this audiobook. However, there is a great introduction by W. Clement Stone.

I would recommend getting this version along with the abridged version simply because I think it's fascinating to hear Napoleon Hill and W. Clement Stone speak about this philosophy in their own words.

4 out of 5 stars A timeless classic.......2007-07-03

Think and grow rich is a must read for anyone with a dream. Hill describes in inspiring detail how a determined and thoughtful human can achieve virtually anything with the right attitude, plans and of course...thoughts. Dollar-for-dollar the best buy on the Internet.

5 out of 5 stars Read the bible then read this!.......2007-06-08

What more can I say! If you need an attitude adjustment... here it is! Think about it! If you think you can... why cant you? This book deals with that from a near clinical point of view as well as a lamen joe point of view! Everyone on earth needs this book!

1 out of 5 stars Content is great, cheap , crappy paperback copy.......2007-06-07

My comment is for the production of this paperback, not the content.
This is the poorest quality paperback I've ever seen or purchased. Large chunks of pages came loose from the glue binding almost immediately after opening the book the first time. I was on a trip and constantly had to deal with more pages coming loose and trying to fly around. Really poor quality repro.

5 out of 5 stars Get This Version as it was Originally Intended to Be Published.......2007-06-04

This is one of my all-time favorite books which I re-read it at least once every other year. Ask anyone who has read this book and virtually everyone will tell you this is one of the best you will ever own. If you feel you need help succeeding in anything, then use this book as a coach. If you have the ambition, but need a plan - this book will help you. If you just need a pick me up, just read some of the stories intertwined - this book will help you.

This book is an all time great dealing with success and personal management. Dealing with practical methods for creating in oneself the ability to do whatever one puts their mind to. Starting with an idea (hence the name) one can expect to use this information to create a way to approach life that should produce positive results.

$ This version is the way it was originally published. It is older, yes, but newer versions seem to lose some of the original "flavor" and "intent".

Book Description

Like Freakonomics, here is a book that combines counterintuitive thinking with stories from everyday life to provide a striking new view of how our world works. Ever since Einstein's study of Brownian Motion, scientists have understood that a little disorder actually makes systems more effective. But most people still shun disorder--or suffer guilt over the mess they can't avoid. No longer! With a spectacular array of anecdotes and case studies of the useful role mess can play, here is an antidote to the accepted wisdom that tight schedules, neatness, and consistency are the keys to success. Drawing on examples from business, parenting, cooking, the war on terrorism, retail, and even the meteoric career of Arnold Schwarzenegger, coauthors Abrahamson and Freedman demonstrate that moderately messy systems use resources more efficiently, yield better solutions, and are harder to break than neat ones. A Perfect Mess will help readers assess what the right amount of disorder is for a given system, and how to apply these ideas onto a large scale--government, society-- and on a small scale--in your attic, kitchen, or office. A Perfect Mess will forever change the way we think about those unruly heaps of paper on our desks.

4 out of 5 stars Disorder at its best........2007-10-09

I love this book it has shown me that it is ok to be disorganized, to a point. I bought it with a passing interest and the more I read the more I was able to line up the themes in the chapters with aspects of my life, which was rewarding and sometime eye-opening. The concepts in this book could prove to be useful to all types of people, but I mostly found myself examining the many examples as they related to my own business.

Great book!

1 out of 5 stars TOTAL UNADULTERATED GARBAGE.......2007-09-14

I've reviewed a lot of books on Amazon; this may be the single worst. As a former "clutterholic", I know how clutter can literally destroy your life. Believe me, there is NOTHING good about clutter, and being a contrarian for its own sake, or to hawk books, is doing a disservice to the readers who are sincerly looking for help. You don't tell a person with a serious eating disorder that he/she is alright the way he/she is, and you don't tell a person with a serious clutter problem that he/she is alright the way he/she is!

5 out of 5 stars So you don't have to be a neatnik after all!.......2007-06-09

The inside flap of the book says, "Ever Since Einstein's study of Brownian motion" scientistshave understooed that a little disorder can actually make systems more effective. But most people still shun disorder-- or suffer guilt over the mess they an't avoid! No longer do you have to be a neatnik to be PERFECT...a little mess goes a long way to creativity. The biggest surprise is that the authors show that strategic planning for corporation is not as effective as being nimble and responding to change. There are 13 chapters -- note not 12 -- just a bit messy, right? And they range from "The Cost of Neatness" to "The Aesthetics of Mess" . Written by Eric Abrahamson, professor of management at Columbia Business School and David Freedman, contributing editor and the tech columnist for INC magazine this is a highly readable and informative book. BUT don't think it's going to let you off the hook for being a clutter bug. Cluttering is just one aspect of "mess" and 'neatness'. Alas no rules for managers abougt how much mess and what kind of mess to include. Seems every manager that uses some degree of mess seems to do it differently. So I can't summarize it all for you hear. Plus I don't know why you're reading this. Me -- because I tend to collect clutter in my office. And then I put it in boxes and have to sort it out. EEKS...but I almost NEVER lose anything....same when I had a real office in a corporate environment. Even though I'm in high tech, I tend to use low-tech systems that don't take up much time in my busy and ever-changing world of consulting. Plus, I don't have to pay extra for people who work for me to just keep things NEAT....although now and then I do bring in people to help sort out supply closets etc and then I'm able to keep them in order for 6 months or so. You'll find your own rhyme and reason in this book. Plus it finally gives you a retort when people say you're office is 'messy' -- so was Einstein's and Edison's and more.

4 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book if you count your paperclips.......2007-06-02

Despite the title, this book doesn't advocate disorder, at least not in the dictionary sense of the word.

For example, a neat-freak's desk, and one used by someone like me were compared.

The neat-freak has an "orderly" desk, with all paper filed out of sight. To get at any paper, the neatnik must take time to access the filing system: generally a matter of walking to a filing cabinet, opening a drawer, and riffling through folders.

The other desk is covered with piles of papers and folders. More often than not, the 'disorganized' worker has the paper he or she needs at or near the top of a pile within arm's length.

The point is that having the sort of rigid, non-priority-oriented, organization that many workplaces use isn't as efficient as a sort of ad hoc organization based on use and needs.

Even if you don't embrace the book's approach to organization, reading it will be an anodyne to the alphabetized drumbeat of advice from the compulsive pencil-arrangers of this world.

4 out of 5 stars a explanation for the disarray.......2007-05-27

The authors put ryme and reason to the sense of disarray. At first, I was skeptical of this book but as i read it and they presented examaples and their arguments, I found myself sold on what they were discussing. There is order to the world of self contained chaos.

Book Description

What if a fascinating stranger knew you better than you know yourself?

When her husband comes home with a farfetched story about eating dinner with someone he believes to be Jesus, Mattie Cominsky thinks this may signal the end of her shaky marriage. Convinced that Nick is, at best, turning into a religious nut, the self-described agnostic hopes that a quick business trip will give her time to think things through.

On board the plane, Mattie strikes up a conversation with a fellow passenger. When she discovers their shared scorn for religion, she confides her frustration over her husband’s recent conversion. The stranger suggests that perhaps her husband isn’t seeking religion but true spiritual connection, an idea that prompts her to reflect on her own search for fulfillment.

As their conversation turns to issues of spiritual longing and deeper questions about the nature of God, Mattie finds herself increasingly drawn to this insightful stranger. But when the discussion unexpectedly turns personal, touching on things she’s never told anyone, Mattie is startled and disturbed. Who is this man who seems to peer straight into her soul?

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-09-17

This book is the sequel to "Dinner with a Perfect Stranger." Whereas the first book involves Jesus speaking with a man, this one is Jesus' witnessing to the man's wife. Like him, she's not a Christian. Jesus slowly leads her where he wants her to go, always dealing with her in love. Jesus meets the woman on an airplane, where he also entertains the child ahead of him by making faces. Yes, I think Jesus would do that! Another wonderful book that shows witnessing done God's way. It's a book you'll want to keep.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent follow-up.......2007-09-10

I thought this book was an excellent follow-up/sequel to Dinner with a Perfect Stranger. As in the original...it is easy to read, thought-provoking, not bogged down or time consuming. Really, if you've read the first one...THIS is a MUST read as well!

4 out of 5 stars A good book.......2007-07-14

I enjoyed this book but not as much as Dinner With a Perfect Stranger. I wished God would have revealed Himself sooner.
They're both books I will suggest to others.

5 out of 5 stars God at work in every way.......2007-05-24

My wife and I read this after reading _Dinner with a Perfect stranger_ and they both compliment each other. These books give some terrific insight into life's 'workings' and provide another viewpoint about love, life, religion that can be intimately identified with for each of us, although in a different manner for each.
It was a thouroughy enjoyable read.

5 out of 5 stars Day With a Perfect Stranger.......2007-05-13

I found this book to be so very awesome in it's presentation, purpose and perspective. I got lost in the book and when I was finished it I felt a sense of loss; I would not have this literary "friend" to read each night before retiring.
David Gregory presented some very thought provoking ideas.
I passed it on to a friend who also gives this book a rave review.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

This is such a great book. It was actually one of my text books in college, used in one of my HUS electives.
I gave it to a friend who I thought needed it and then bought two more copies 1 for my personal enjoyment and then a copy for a guy at church that made soup look nervous.
Great book!

5 out of 5 stars Powerfully helpful book.......2006-06-28

of all the books on my bookshelf, this is probably the one that i have recommended the most. the authors do an excellent job of motivating people to assertiveness, describing the difference between assertiveness and aggressiveness (something i repeatedly do with patients because these concepts were not well defined for them in the past), and providing a practical guide for people to improve their assertiveness.

i have found that many patients feel very challenged by the notion of abrasive or offensive people scaring them into submission. this book has a chapter on dealing with difficult people that helps with this fear. the section, true to form, gives a very practical strategy for tackling even the toughest, most narcissistic individuals.

for individuals wanting to conduct assertiveness training in a group format, the book can easily be tailored to this goal. the practical, step-by-step approach makes creating weekly lessons and discussion groups quite simple.

another great reference is smith's *when i say no, i feel guilty.* this book focuses more on overcoming guilt and feelings of low self-worth as the primary obstacles to being assertive and self-respecting.

Product Description

What's Happened to Our Contributions? A hundred years ago, collective giving seemed the perfect solution. What one individual or church couldn't do, combined efforts accomplished with ease. National agencies sprung up, offering to spend on our behalf. And we embraced them. Flash forward to days crammed with emails, overtime, and endless commuting. Time is often more valuable than money, and the desire to delegate spiritual privileges and responsibilities is even stronger. Surely national agencies and the professionals who oversee them can carry out the Great Commission faster and more effectively than harried homemakers and stressed executives. But as our time shrinks, national ministries grow larger. What started as lean groups of roll-up-your-sleeves workers have become Paul Bunyan-sized agencies, with excess fat and an overload of middle men draining a big chunk of the money intended for spreading the gospel. Elaborate national headquarters have shot up across America, with presidential office suites rivaling those of top CEOs. And giving isn't the same. Sending a check to a faceless organization doesn't generate the same fulfillment as pressing money into the hand of a young person heading for the mission field. Now the only smiling faces are those of mega leaders. And recently, their smiles have been fading as disenchanted givers voice their displeasure with irresponsible spending. The author of this on-the-edge book proposes an answer. After opening readers' eyes to the tremendous waste of their hard-earned dollars, she offers ways to bring joy and effectiveness back into giving.

"Spending God's Money" is an honest review of how mega mission organiations can splug on the "widow's mite" they are commissioned to manage. Mary indicates the best use of mission dollars come when the giver is closest to the user of the funds.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for the sheep in the SBC.......2007-05-26

Ministry has become a path to wealth. Too much money with no accountability is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys. We give to the cooperative program for missions...not for private dining rooms and catered lunches for VP's at NAMB. Not to mention the extra money they make writing books on the job and collecting royalties. Has sin been so dumbed down that these people do not even notice that they are using the tithe dollars of brothers and sisters in Christ for personal gain? Shameful.

It has become a monolithe with no REAL spiritual oversight. What is the answer? Send your money to a missionary personally.

My view is if these types of jobs paid less than six figures they may attract more shepherd like men. Take away the celebrity status and no writing books. After all, our Savior had no where to lay His head and Paul made tents.

5 out of 5 stars Spending God's Money.......2007-03-25

Mary Branson has wriiten a couageous report of her experience working for leaders in the Southern Baptist Convention who have been corupted by power. It is an indictment of those who abused and defrauded the laity, but is also an indictment of the laity who failed to monitor and exercise prudent stuardship over God's money. Appropriate auditing and involement by people in the pew might have prevented this dreadful happening. It is a must read for anyone connected with the Southern Baptist Convention.

5 out of 5 stars Spending God's Money.......2007-03-05

Branson shares her first hand knowledge of how these people spent money sent by well-meaning believers for their own indulgent lifestyles. The book is fair and impartial, and lets the reader be the judge. This is a book that needed to be written!

5 out of 5 stars A Riveting Work.......2007-02-06

As painful as it was to read, I was impressed by the fair, direct, and loving manner in which it was written. It serves as a prophetic warning to American shepherds that God will not allow greed to remain hidden forever. I intend to get this book into as many hands as possible.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh look at "doing church".......2007-08-30

I was interested in this book because my church is launching a daughter church. The insights that Burke has are so dead on. My husband's Bible study decided to go through the book a chapter at a time, using the discussion questions at the end of each one. The questions are good - really make you think about how the church should look in this culture. I work in a non-profit organization. The entire staff bought the book and we've been using it during staff meetings. This book is accessible, but not "dumbed down" at all.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!!!.......2007-08-08

Great book. I got the book from the library and have been using it for a college class. The book is very good and has actually casued me to rethink some of my ideas about non-christians. There are excellent stories in the book. It reminds me of how Jesus taught; in parables. I have never written a review here, but this book impressed me quite a bit.

5 out of 5 stars Up-to-date info for the behind-the-times church.......2007-05-14

This book is an absolute must for churches today! Anyone that is a minister, volunteer worker, or anyone that is Christian and is part of a church should read this book. As a music minister, this book really challenged me to stop hiding behind the walls of a church building and actually do what the Bible tells me to do, reach the unchurched. This book is about relating to the unchurched on their terms and not expecting them to act like Christians before they come to church. To paraphrase Paul, "I have become all things to all people so I can tell them about Christ." This is what the church should be doing today but they spend all their time having business meetings and fellowship meals. If you're looking to start reaching out to those that need the hope that you have within you, then I would pick up this book and read it then pass it on to as many people in your church as you can.

5 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking.......2007-02-12

A well written book with lots of great stories. It certainly causes one to think about doing church in a way very different from the way most churches I have attended. Most churches build barriers to keep sinners out. The author suggests that sinners are exactly the people Jesus would want to be in church.

5 out of 5 stars Not Perfect But . . ........2007-01-10

This book challanged my way of thinking about the role of The Church in contemporary society. I found it both interesting to read and exciting in both the scope and depth of it's message. I heartily recomend it anyone interested in seeing God's Church become even more effective in this 21st century.

5 out of 5 stars I thought I would hate it! .......2007-07-26

I have 4 small kids and am a fairly recent convert. When I heard about the Popcak's radical anti-spanking stance I thought I would find their book mushy and liberal, so I borrowed it from a friend. But I liked it so much that I actually bought 2 copies, one for me and one for my sister (who is not even Catholic).

The Popcaks speak from experience, and they really showed me in this book that attachment parenting, and even a no-spank mentality, does NOT mean permissiveness. The way to reach your children is to form their consciences through love and example. Loving them and having expectations of them inspire them to obey from the heart. This ensures that what we really want for our kids -- for them to be happy, loving, productive adults -- is going to happen.

Some features of the book are "quizzes" that give you a more concrete sense of what they are talking about when they speak of having rapport with your child, etc. I think their suggestions for building a loving home are great, their discipline suggestions and explanations are very useful, and also their section that walks through each stage of childhood and describes parenting issues, suggestions, and what virtues the child should be learning at each stage.

When you are focused on behavior modification, you tend to look for mere outward compliance. The Popcak's way is a LOT more labor- intensive, a lot more parent-involved, and a lot more rewarding in the short and long term.

The hardest part about being a parent is being a good example. Learning to model charity and other Catholic virtues is much harder than simply requiring it of your kids. If you want an easy button approach to parenting, a way to keep your kids quiet so you can watch TV, or a magic wand to fast forward through the early years, this book is NOT for you.

The Popcaks have a live radio show weekdays as well. [...]

5 out of 5 stars This Book is BOTH Theologically Sound AND Effective!.......2007-04-26

For Catholics (and other Christians, heck, for anybody!), psychotherapist and author Gregory Popcak provides here a great deal of sound theological, psychological and practical support for the attachment-style of parenting, not just in the "baby years" but all the way through! He has written a book for Catholic parents ("Parenting with Grace"), but also promotes on his radio show and blog secular authors whose work backs up with sound science the principles he embraces, including Margo Sunderland (The Science of Parenting), Dr. William Sears (of course) and Gordon Neufeld (Hold On to Your Kids).

Popcak is able to articulate a real theological basis for making parenting decisions AND has many extremely useful practical strategies for improving connection between parents and kids which enhance behavior. His work has the approval of his bishop, and is supported by many Catholic theologians, priests and lay experts.

Popcak has taken some flak in some Christian childrearing circles for being anti-spanking, but I support him. He has a better way. And if you think that YOU have a situation where you REALLY need to spank your kid, call Popcak up on his weekly radio program and ask him. I guarantee you he will have an effective AND loving answer. Call my bluff on this.

A recent study showed that children of religious parents behave better. I believe those who read and follow Greg Popcak's work here must be skewing that sample! Contrary to popular belief, not all religious parents use an authoritarian style of parenting to improve short-term behavior. In the case of this Catholic author, the love of Christ and our reflection of that love calls us as parents to demonstrate love radically through self-giving to our children. This doesn't mean permissive parenting, but radical love and being willing to inconvience ourselves to meet our children's needs, along with having the guts to set limits when we are "working for our children's good."

If there are Catholics, other Christians or seekers out there looking for gentle religion-based parenting that WILL improve behavior through love, I recommend Popcak's work.

5 out of 5 stars This Author is Awesome.......2007-03-26

I really love Gregory Popcak's way of explaining every facet of life in the light of Christ and the Church. He is very doctrinally sound and is the best Catholic author/counselor around today. This book is so thorough and helpful. I put off reading it for so long because, of course, I would rather read novels than have to improve myself as a person and a parent, but when I finally got around to reading it, I wished that I hadn't put it off. I've gotten to the point with my children where I just didn't know what to do anymore and I needed some serious encouragement, from someone I could trust, and let me tell you, if you are a Catholic, you can trust Gregory Popcak in every way. He is the author of many other books on other subjects ie: marriage and teaching sexuality to your kids, so check them out if there is any part of your life that you are struggling with and need some Catholic answers.

Practical, fluent and clear.

Great Book

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful and important book.......2006-11-02

I loved this book!!

Popcak begins with a general overview of his approach to parenting, which is attachment-based. He does a good job of explaining why attachment parenting is the most evolved approach to parenting, b/c it corresponds to the Church's (as developed by JPII) emerging understanding of love as self-donative. He presents one chapter on "everyday" techniques of parenting which are positive, relationship focused techniques, then follows this with a chapter on techniques to use in emergency situations only -- included here are time-outs and the other "technique-y" approaches most of us are familiar with.

I found it refreshing that Popcak thinks there IS a place for traditional techniques like time-outs, natural consequences, etc. but emphasizes that these shouldn't be our daily techniques, and that without a strong child-parent attachment, any technique is of limited use. A child simply has no motivation to restore harmony to a relationship that is non-existent or which brings him mostly loneliness and pain.

The book then lays out separate chapters on each of the 5 stages of development: Infancy, toddlerhood, early school years, etc. I appreciated having this commentary on how to parent effectively at each stage, b/c each stage is so different in terms of challenges (and joys!) and what can be expected of the child.

I was looking for a nice Catholic parenting book, and a friend loaned me a few. I was alarmed that spanking was advocated in them. I purchased Popcak's book because I am a traditional and faithful Catholic, but also practice attachment parenting. I am relieved to have this resource for my parenting vocation.

5 out of 5 stars perfect trust.......2007-01-30

this is totally a book a christian can read and get alot out of it, but especially for someone searching or a non-christian could get something from it and find God through it. I intend to have several copies on hand to give to someone who needs a little comfort in knowing God is there for them and they are not alone.

4 out of 5 stars Profoundly helpful.......2006-07-14

This is an excellent little book of thoughts on the nature of trust. It's profound yet attention-grabbing; written in bite-sized chapters - which, taken a piece at a time, make encouraging and positive 'thought food' for a day. Well written and a good buy for the discerning reader.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring Reading.......2004-01-21

"In order to trust God we must view our adverse circumstances through eyes of faith, not our senses," we're told in the first few pages of this wonderful book. Chuck Swindoll goes on to tell us how to do that. He describes people who reflect a quiet, peaceful calm as being those individuals who have cultivated a perfect trust in God. Such a mindset liberates one to be the distinctive person God intended.

Swindoll writes from a profoundly deep perspective. Only an author who has been tested himself could write the following:
"God has trusted each of us with our own set of unfair circumstances and unexplained experiences to deal with. Can we still trust in Him even if He never tell us why?"
He goes on to answer the question he posed by saying, "..it's good simply because God Himself has allowed it. Acceptance is resting in God's goodness."

Job of the Old Testament is used to illustrate complete acceptance of God's will. Job trusted God totally, although he did not understand what was occurring in his life.

Read the section on worry. He offers five problems associated with it that enable you to see its deceptive powers. He also helps you to overcome it. I strongly recommend this book. It will deepen your relationship with God if you read it with the proper mindset.

2 out of 5 stars Not written by D, but another in household.......2002-12-31

This book is inspiring in the way that it encourages people to trust God. Perhaps I should've given it two stars but what dissappointed me within reading the first two pages were the statements of"....we deserve judgement" and "he was a 'godly' fugitive". Perhaps being a little over-analytical or precise I would like to comment that man, himself is not godly. Thus, using the word "godly" to discribe someone who wishes to follow "God's ways" should not be described as "godly" due to its misleading implications. Second of all, the book should be precise on "we deserve judgement". Yes it is true that Jesus Christ is Lord of All and that this book has much good coming from it's pages, but one must wonder if the good that is meant to encourage can be ruined with inaccurate text that does not coalign with scripture. God is the righteous judge and although we do not deserve His mercy, He is a God most of all of Love & Truth. Please understand that I am not bashing this book. There are a lot of encouraging passages, but the "spider scenario" and other statements are misleading and do not rely all on scripture. One should still satisfy ones curiosity and may do so in "borrowing" this book. But in order for one to be a "careful" and "passionate" christian one should not be afraid to question what one is reading.
