Dive Book 2 The Deep.......2007-02-26
I read Dive Book 2 The Deep by Gordon Korman. I think the most annoying this is when you're going on to the next book in a series and the author explains all the events that happened. Gordon Korman doesn't do that. He sort of starts a new chapter as if it was from book 1. This story takes places in Poseidon Saint Luc, a tiny city in the Caribbean. Kaz, Dante, Adriana, and Star found strange artifacts in their diving site. They figure out that the artifacts came from a Spanish Galleon, Nuestra Senora de las luz.
The four divers are going to stay in the Poseidon underwater self-contained habitat or PUSH. PUSH is located 65 feet beneath the surface. The four divers go on dives to look for nothing but artifacts. They find a dagger, silverware, and plates, and a bell. Adriana spends an hour scrubbing the coral off the bell to see if there's any writing. She figures out that the bell is from Toledo, a Spanish city where there is most metalwork. It doesn't seem like that much but it's worth 1.2 billion dollars.
Before the end of their stay, Dante finds a trench. He knew that artifacts would go down there. The four divers and a specialist will go on a deep water scout which looks like a giant bubble. At 700 feet down, they see danger.
I would recommend this book to people who like suspenseful mysteries. I couldn't really connect to this because this is a rare moment.

Dive #2.......2006-02-25
This first book was very exciting and had you at the edge at all times. This book a bit boring, and I could tell it was just filler for the end of book three. Because of that it was a disapointment to me.
Dive Book 2.......2006-01-10
In Dive Book 2 Kaz Adriana Star and Dante` are looking for a treasure. While Star is swimming thier boat gets secretly blown up.what is Star going to do.
For my opiion for this book I would say this is AWSOME.Its awsome because the charactors are so lively. Its like they are talking to you.You will love this book.
I would rate this book a five out five because of the swimming, adventure andaction. If you don't like swimming trust me you won't like it.Even if youdon't like swimming try and read it.Then try reading the whole series.
The Depts of the Sea.......2005-05-25
This book is about a group of 4 divers (3 amuture divers, 1 handicaped diver) who are looking for a sunking Spanish vessel that has a huge treasure aboard it. But they have to find it behind everyone's back and before a treasure hunter finds it first.
If you like the sea, diving, and suspence, then read this book.
The Story.......2004-03-17
Dive,The Deep is about 4 divers at a dive intern for the summer and find out about a sunkin ships treasure and are searching for it at night so no one will know. Mean while the so called "teacher" is digging for some gold himself...

Read it in one sitting.......2007-08-03
The book had a fast-paced interesting storyline. Mr Collins also managed to capture the characters and their "ways" of interacting as portrayed on TV. As a fan of the show, I enjoyed the read. Well worth the price I paid for it!
Quick to ship.......2007-06-10
Not as good as Reichs. Storyline is like the show so I was a little confused as I didn't realize all the changes from original character.

Great!.......2007-05-06
Perfect book for a Dora lover. Pictures are inserted wtihin the sentences so your child can read along and particpate with you!
3 year old daughter loves it.......2007-03-27
My daughter and I love to read this book together. It is nice and short. My daughter is also learning to spell because of the simple and repetitive words in the book.
Another Great Dora Book.......2006-11-30
My two daughters (ages 2 and 4) request this book be read--at least once a day (along with all the other "Ready-to-Read" books we bought for them). They especially get excited when it's time to go under the sea with Dora. I think this book is probably geared toward the preschool/beginning grade school set. It has big words and colorful pictures. The stories are simple and not too long.
Certain words have little "pictographs" with the word that it's for directly underneath it in smaller print. I suppose this is to help the child learn to read these certain words. Since my daughters are still pretty young (the oldest is now just learning the sounds different letters make; she already can recognize all the letters), we haven't really tried to use these little pictures in that way. Although, we've read this story so many times to them that they "read along" by reciting from memory certain parts of the story. All Dora the Explorer books are great fun for the kids because it involves them in the story much like the TV show does.
I highly recommend it.
Fabulously fun for my 2-year old.......2006-03-26
My son absolutely loves this book and so does his 2-year old cousin. He enjoys looking at the pictures to "guess" the word and it makes him feel like he's really reading the book. This is his favorite book and wants to read it every day.
Another Good Dora Adventure - a review of "Dora in the Deep Sea".......2005-12-14
We like "Dora in the Deep Sea". My children like it because it has a pretty good story and because it is about Dora, Boots and Pirate Piggy. I like it because it is a good read-aloud, has lots to point out and talk about, and because it allows for a different sorts of interactivity depending on age.
In that regards, Amazon suggests this book for the 4 to 8 age range, but I think it is much more versatile than that. For example, for babies you can read the story and talk about what animals are in the picture and what color they are. [There are seagulls, a variety of silly fish, octopuses, sea anemones, eels, crab, starfish, clams, stingrays, turtles, lobsters, whale, squid, frog, snail, fox (Swiper) and sea horses. There are a great many colors to discuss as well.]
For older toddlers and preschoolers you can `enhance' the story experience by moving your finger over the text, stopping at the `icons' with the intent of letting them fill in the blanks. My children get excited by this because it gives them the sense that they are beginning to feel apart of the `reading'. And if our experience is any indication, they learn that text flows from left to right and top to bottom.
Advanced preschoolers and kindergarteners on up can then begin to use the book for its stated purpose. They can begin to read it themselves. Most words are small: I, am, this, sad, will, the, and help. Although there are harder words for sure: Hooray, swipe, friend, something, clownfish, pirate, and pinch.
Four stars. A pretty good story (see previous reviewers fine summary) about the popular characters from the "Dora the Explorer" TV show. It can be used for babies to beginning readers. It engages children in the flow and process of reading, i.e. how it is done.

Customer Reviews:
Where is the SciFi?.......2006-07-31
This book is a perfect example of psychobabble. There is a plot, albeit a weak one. The author is a good wordsmith and should have written a better book. That is why I gave it 3 stars.
Dynamite Combo - Mystery and Science Fiction.......2006-04-07
The story takes place at a time when humans have colonized the solar system and have made contact with intelligent alien species. In Sahara Dome on Mars a human skeleton has been discovered under the dwelling of the Disty - a race with intricate often brutal, rituals and a powerful aversion to death. The Disty dwellers evacuate their homes in great haste. They have suffered a major contamination. The only way to satisfy the Disty is to find family members of the human victim and convince them to take part in an alien ritual. The search to identify the body leads forensic anthropologist Aisha Costard to Armstrong Dome on the Moon where she hopes to convince Retrieval Artist Miles Flint to help her find the relatives.
The Disty hold her responsible for the contamination of their brethren. If the relatives are not found within a few days the alien will legally take their savage revenge on her.
A terrific blend of science fiction and murder mystery. I have read one other book in the Retrieval Artist series - The Disappeared (Roc, 2002) and enjoyed every word of it. Rusch tells a great story but also tackles the notion of what justice means when more than one species is involved. The answers can be unnerving for those who must make very difficult choices. Buried Deep is Book 4 in the series
Simple Reader's Opinion of Buried Deep.......2006-03-13
In science fiction I look for original premise, good story, believable science (within the universe described) and interesting characters. I want to be entertained but not confused by inconsistencies. KKR does an outstanding job of entertaining me. The world she has created and its characters are consistent, sensible to that world, and unique. I have read all four books and this is one of the best. The reactions of the Disty is both unfathomable and logical--just as some human cultures are to me.
"We are not alone...".......2005-10-21
I, like another reviewer, had this book for several months before reading it due to other books on my to-do list but once I read it, enjoyed it immenseley. I'm a little puzzled by the negative reviews as they seemed to be based on either the fact that the reviewer has not read the entire series and thus, doesn't understand the characters' motivations (there's a rational reason for Miles Flint's coldness and objectivity - it was part of his tutelage from his mentor in order to survive in the RA business).
The other negative reviews appear to be based on the belief that humans will always be the dominant species in the universe. This latter premise isn't a requirement in the sci-fi genre and frankly, doesn't fly even in the Star Trek universe where species liked the Romulans, the Borg and the Klingons kicked humanity's ass on occasion. To believe that we as humans would not play in a game where the rules are draconian to us assumes that we have the option of (a) thriving in said universe without cooperating or (b) that we are not vastly outnumbered and overwhelmed by other species. I happen to think Rusch's universe is closer to what might become our reality; after all, suppose extraterresterial contact arrives on our planet first (rather than us arriving on their planet), thus demonstrating their technological superiority?
Regardless, for those readers who have read the other books in the series and are wondering about a let-down - have no fear. This installment, like others, is rich in plot, suspense, and characters and Rusch continues to paint a vivid picture as to interspecies conflict. If you haven't read any of the RA books, read the series in order - they are not standalone books. Highly recommended for the sci-fi enthusiast.
the Retrieval Artist series gets better as we get deeper into alien customs.......2005-09-30
This series continues with a book in which we deal with the Disty and Humans, with only momentary glances at other species in Rusch's universe. This makes it easier to concentrate in detail on some fine points of the alien culture. It is also easier because the previous novels have established background; for that reason, I would tell someone just discovering Rusch that this is a series best read mostly in order, so go ahead and get all the books, not just this one first. Especially, one needs some background from the novel immediately preceding this one; if you can't pick them all up right away, at least get "Consequences."
That said, let's consider the part of the plot that is this volume's alone. Mainly, it centers on the death taboos and customs of the Disty, the alien race who control Mars. These customs are extensive and nearly incomprehensible to humans, and quite complex. Some reviewers have found that point hard to swallow, complaining that it's not believable. However, two points: one, even among humans alone, we have a rule that "ignorance of the law is no excuse" and we punish people for accidentally breaking laws they didn't know existed and that no one thought to tell them. This is true across any spread of human cultures you choose to contrast. And breaking customs of another country or culture that one wasn't informed about is also quite common among humans in the real world, to the extent that people attempt to write guides to such things and all of them are inevitably described as incomplete.
Point two, the complexity and variation of the Disty death taboos and customs and rituals is not unbelievable; for an analogy, just look at the complex of laws we have surrounding marriage: thousands and thousands of different ceremonies and customs around the planet, millions of small details regarding what is expected of married couples, varying widely from religion to religion, and in the breakup of any marriage, every case varies enough to need individual adjudication, including dividing of property specific to the couple, child custody arrangements ditto, and so on. In other words, while the rituals themselves may not be comprehensible to us, and we may not agree with the Disty beliefs covering them, the number of strange, complex rituals the Disty have is quite believable, and that fact that one doesn't find out about them until a particular case occurs is something we already have experience of in human culture. (Let's try showing the Disty a Jewish wedding and a Mormon wedding, shall we, and explaining that both have to do with the same basic concept of two humans living together and probably producing offspring...)
For those new to the series, probably the level of pickiness I went into above indicates the complexity of the series, and the fullness of Rusch's universe. These are real people, with personality quirks, interactions with other fully realized people, and so on. Perhaps the selfish reporter is a bit of a stereotype, but even she has her moments, where some insight is given into the legitimate motives that might have propelled her to become the kind of reporter she is.
The development over time of the various domes on the Moon and on Mars, and how the various domes differ based on when they were built and what their original purposes were, are fascinating details of the "history" of this universe, and make for some fun speculation as to the stories behind those stories.
And, alas, as I write this just after Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita, the details of government officials not cooperating with each other, not deciding who has authority over what, the lack of funding for Noelle's security position despite its importance, and the politicians not making decisions both for lack of authority and for fear of being blamed later, all ring far too true for comfort. As do the thousands of deaths that occur because one dome had no evacuation plan in place...
I have only one complaint to make about this book: "search perimeters." Miles, among others, is described as setting "search perimeters" for his computer searches. Perhaps, if we take a rather stretchy meaning of perimeter to mean limits or boundaries, that's what the author meant. Or maybe she misused perimeters, thinking that she was using the word "parameter." Or, more likely, she wrote "search *parameters*," a common enough phrase, and some automatic copy editing quirk somewhere changed it. No matter which of these it was, it makes for an uncomfortable pause as one tries to decipher: did she do this on purpose, or by accident, or is it the publisher's fault, and if she did it on purpose, why? So I have a suggestion for Ms. Rusch: so that we don't have to wonder about that, and can concentrate on your stories, please: if you mean search "terms" or "conditions" go ahead and use those words, and if you mean search "limits" use that word; avoid parameter altogether and don't use perimeter unless you really mean the edge of a physical area that someone is patrolling. That way, people can concentrate on the story.
That said, I'm sure it will be fixed in the next edition of this volume, and hope it will be fixed in the next book in the series, which I am looking forward to and will definitely buy, because this continues to be a fascinating series.

Book Description
THE DEAD BOY WOULD NOT GO AWAY.
Jean is on her way to Hawaii for a week of fun in the sun. But the vacation gets off to a gruesome start. The boy sitting beside her on the plane suddenly chokes and dies. Jean tries to push the incident out of her mind when she arrives on the island, but that's impossible. Part of the reason is because Mike keeps coming back to her in her dreams. Horrible dreams filled with cold blood.
Two of Jean's friends are waiting for her in Hawaii -- Mandy and Michele. They have already made friends with two young men who teach scuba diving at the hotel -- Dave and Johnny. Jean and Johnny quickly become friends. But there are problems in paradise. Dave and Johnny have recently lost a partner in the ocean. No one knows how he died. No one can find his body. But then Jean finds Mike's body. It isn't where it's supposed to be, and it seems as if it's still got some life in it.

Its suspensful and unpredictable! You have no idea what is going to happen next...

Book Description
These mystical lyrics retell the biblical story of Ha'gar.
"The Casting of Stones"
She is raw, as if a great hand whittled her down to bone.
She gleams beneath her eyes; she is full with the death of desire,
with the absence of useless moons. She is the conundrum
of what is filled, her emptiness beyond our ken; she holds
nothing; her skin, a sieve. She is gone beyond
us, where dust is water and water, sprinkling sand.
We have walked with our sandals upon her; we have leaned
into her void. We have called out her name
in the desert; we have found twelve polished stones.
Veronica Golos is director of poetry programs at the 14th Street Y.

This book is very good to read. The book can be exciting for the person who likes the book. It will be the best book to be read at home or at school. If you care for it you can keep it away from a litte or baby brother because they might rip it. This book is very awsome book for people.

Death Du Jour
Kathy Reichs
Manufacturer: Doubleday Direct
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Hardcover
ASIN: B000L9VEHS |
Product Description
Readers of Kathy Reichs's cool and clever first forensic thriller Déjà Dead will recognize the ironic voice of Tempe (short for Temperance) Brennan, the North Carolina-born scientist who winds up working at the Laboratoire de Médicine Légale in Montreal. Here she bristles at the conservative attitudes of some of her Canadian colleagues. Despite the cold weather, Tempe's workload quickly becomes heavy: the bones of a long-dead nun now up for sainthood have been moved and tampered with; a deadly house fire turns out to be arson; and a university teaching assistant disappears after joining a cult. Tempe must figure out where (and why) all the bodies are buried in the hard Canadian ground. Her investigations take her home to North Carolina, and to a strange colony living on an offshore island. Unlike certain other writers who specialize in forensic pathology, Reichs doesn't revel in the horror of death or rub our noses in gore: she uses the science of death to reveal rather than to shock or startle. It definitely makes for easier reading--especially at mealtimes.
