Dr. Eldon Mate, a.k.a. Dr. Death, has been the bane of the Los Angeles D.A.'s existence, the bête noir of all opposed to assisted suicide, and the angel of mercy to countless "travelers" who have gone to their reward via Mate's good offices. He's also turned up in the back of his van, attached to his own death-dealing "Humanitron" machine and too far away from most of his blood and a certain external organ.

Enter Milo Sturgis, L.A.'s only openly gay homicide detective, and for the 14th time in 15 years (1985's Edgar-winning When the Bough Breaks through 1999's Monster), enter also his good friend, child psychologist and LAPD consultant Dr. Alex Delaware. Unbeknownst to Sturgis, however, is a potentially case-stymieing doctor-patient conflict of interest. One of Delaware's young patients' mother was either the beneficiary or victim of Dr. Death's services, depending upon your point of view. The father, Richard Doss, is firmly in the latter camp, giving Delaware ample pause:

After hearing the details of the murder, I felt better. The butchery didn't seem like Richard's style. Though how sure of that could I be? Richard hadn't disclosed any more about himself than he'd wanted to. In control, always in control. One of those people who crowds every room he enters. Maybe that had been part of what led his wife to seek out Eldon Mate.
Maybe. But the fact is that there's no shortage of motivated suspects from both within and without the late doctor's circle of influence. And as usual, Jonathan Kellerman (himself a child psychologist and recognized authority in childhood psycho-pathology) guides Delaware's engaging first-person narrative with expertise, keeps Detective Sturgis real, and rudders his taut story to its satisfying end with sharp, true-to-the-ear dialogue. With Dr. Death, Kellerman's legion of Delaware fans will be very well pleased, and first-timers will almost certainly join the legion. --Michael Hudson

3 out of 5 stars Breezy Read.......2007-01-07

I described this book as breezy to a friend who asked about it. It is an easy read, compelling enough to hold your interest and make you want to finish. The characters, of course, are well known to any Kellerman reader. Milo (the gay LAPD detective) is barely present in this book. Alex Delaware is the forensic psychologist and main character.

The plot is centered on a Dr. Kevorkian style MD who assists "travelers" on their journey to death. He is found brutally slain in his euthanesia van hooked up to his own death machine. There are a number of potential suspects and red herrings as well as sub-plots The denouement is interesting and offers up some poetic justice.

Justice appeals to me. I still enjoy it when good prevails over evil. Therefore, I like this book.

If you're looking for entertainment without literary complexity, this book could be just the ticket.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of angst!.......2006-07-06

This was the kind of book that made me go WHEW! when I got to the end. LOTS of tension between Alex and Milo - Alex is lucky Milo is such a nice guy.

The tension begins when Eldon Mate is found brutally murdered. The so-called Dr. Death had made a name for himself by euthanizing dozens of people and now someone has mutilated him and left him hooked up to his own death machine. Detective Milo Sturgis has the case and he requests the assistance of his old pal, Psychologist Dr. Alex Delaware. Alex is torn because a referral by a judge friend of his led to him treating a child of one of Mate's victims and now he actually sort of suspects the girl's father may have been capable of killing Mate, but he must not breach doctor/patient confidentiality and hesitates to tell Milo anything. Milo, meanwhile, is having to deal with a couple new D-Is who think they're above scut work and who think nothing of going around Milo's back and smirking about it afterwards. Add one obsessive FBI agent and the stress builds.

There is no shortage of suspects in this one and the investigation goes back and forth - twisty-turny time! The sub-plot dealing with Alex's young patient and her family is a real kicker, too - did Stacy's father kill Mate? Milo thinks so. Alex thinks it's possible, but he very much much wants to think not. Over all, Alex really wears his emotions on his sleeve in this one, his own obsessiveness making him unable to let things go. We see quite a bit of Detective Petra Connor in this one as well (first introduced in Survival of the Fittest and featured in her own book Billy Straight), as she runs interference between Milo and Alex.

The whole case is a total downer for Alex, but it makes for a real page-turner for the reader! Great stuff!

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER ALEX DELAWARE HIT!.......2006-04-10

Having read all the previous Alex Delaware mysteries, starting this book felt like a good friend coming to visit. I know all the "good guy" players and I'm happy to see them again. The mystery part is always good and keeps me guessing--I read for entertainment and really don't try very hard to guess. All in all, I wasn't disappointed by Alex Delaware. However, I do think he's not paying enough attention to Robin and this could spell trouble for the relationship.

4 out of 5 stars INTERESTING BUT WEIRD........2006-02-18

I found this book to be interesting but somewhat weird. I'm a loyal fan of JK and this one took me by surprise.

3 out of 5 stars Who killed Dr. Death ?.......2006-02-09

You'll have to read this book to find out. Dr. Death is a contraversial figure who helps assist his patients to commit suicide. As a result, he certainly has made quite a few enemies over the years, particularly with family members of the deceased. Unfortunately, for him, he becomes the victim as he turns up murdered inside of a van on a mountain road. Milo Sturgis, an openly gay homicide detective, and his good friend (and the main character), child psychologist and LAPD consultant Dr. Alex Delaware begin to investigate the murder. The leads move them in many different directions and the investigation becomes intwined with the family of a teenager that Dr. Delaware is counseling.

This is the first book in this series that I have read, and I found it entertaining. It is interesting to consider Dr. Delawares psychological insights throughout the investigation. Actually, based on how insightful he is in this book, you would wonder why every police department doen't have a psychologist on staff. Anyways, the book is suspensful, contains some action, and good dialogue between Dr. Delaware and his patients. The only minuses of the book is that some of the characters aren't too well developed, and a little one dimensional. I plan to read more of this series though- An enthusiastic three stars for this book!

Book Description

"Dr. Death" Steve Williams was given a second chance. In the prime of his life, Steve was diagnosed with T-4 throat cancer. With God by his side, Steve overcame all odds and survived this deadly disease. Now, Steve is committed to giving his testimony to the people from the wrestling ring.

As an athlete, Steve has "done it all." In 1978, he graduated from Lakewood High in Colorado. Recruited heavily by many major colleges, the star athlete eventually accepted an athletic scholarship to the University of Oklahoma. Steve is one of very few legitimate wrestlers to make the transition from the amateur ranks to the professional wrestling ring. While at the University of Oklahoma, he was a two-time Big Eight free-style wrestling champion. As a collegiate football player, he was also a two-time Big Eight champion. Under legendary coach Barry Switzer, Steve went to three major Orange Bowls, the Sun Bowl, and the Fiesta Bowl. He also played professional football as a defensive nose guard for the New Jersey Generals in the United States Football League (USFL). Because of his amateur wrestling background, Steve was generally regarded as one of the most dangerous "shooters" in the business. This tough reputation earned him the nickname "Dr. Death." For the past 20-plus years, he has worked for all major wrestling promotions throughout the world, including World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Steve has held numerous titles and received a plethora of accolades during his career. In 1985, he was named Most Improved Wrestler and First Runner-Up, Tag Team of the Year (with Ted DiBiase). One year later, he defeated the One Man Gang at the 21:43 mark in Houston, Texas, to become the winner of the $50,000 Pro Wrestling Illustrated/UWF Challenge Cup Tournament. In 1991, Steve and his partner, Terry Gordy, became the first American tag team to win All Japan's annual tag-team tournament in consecutive years. Most recently, in 2003, Steve won the NWA Heavyweight title from Terry Taylor in China. Steve is also an Asian wrestling icon, for he is the only American who has ever worked for two major companies at the same time in Japan--New Japan and All Japan.

With Steve's faith in God, he continues to be a "champion" in all aspects of his life. How Dr. Death Became Dr. Life is an emotional, inspirational read for any football or wrestling fan, Christian, or cancer survivor.

5 out of 5 stars A heartwarming story of an imperfect man, highly recommended to wrestling fans and wrestling historians alike........2007-06-09

Japanese & Mid South Wrestling Legend "Dr. Death" Steve Williams brings an inspirational story of his life, career, and battle with throat cancer. He tells of his college football career and how he failed to make the jump to the now-defunct USFL. He vowed to a pro wrestling trainer to never play football professionally again, and he emerged on the Mid-South Wrestling circuit, the UWF - two of them no less, and WCW. He regales the reader with his run in Japan, where he gained most of his fame, and why he preferred promotions there over American promotions. And then he speaks of how all his sports achievements ultimately meant nothing, when he was diagnosed with throat cancer and found hope in religion. A heartwarming story of an imperfect man, highly recommended to wrestling fans and wrestling historians alike.

2 out of 5 stars Dr. Disappointmnet.......2007-05-13

Maybe it's my fault I went into this book with high expectations, but I was very disappointed with this book. Not much in the way of inside stories. I've alwas been a fan of Doc, but I think you'd need to be a HUGE fan of Steve Williams to think this book is anything better than OK.

3 out of 5 stars Ok but nothing more.......2007-04-28

I am a big fan of Dr Death Steve Williams. He is a true wrestler in my eyes, big and tough with excellent wrestling skills. I was really looking forward to reading this book but I found it so-so.

It is nto a bad read but nothing more than an ok read. I thought Steve could have commented a bit more about some of the wrestlers that he had met over the years and perhaps have been less flattering about some of them as he seemed to have gotten on with most of the wrestlers.

The book is good for Dr Death's fans, but there are better wrestling books out there.

5 out of 5 stars Victory In The Match Against A Brutal Opponent.......2007-04-21

Steve "Dr. Death" Williams entered the pro wrestling ranks in 1982 after a legendary two-sport career with the Oklahoma Sooners - an All-American in football, two-time Big 8 freestyle wrestling champion - but his biggest match came only a few years ago.

In 2004, Williams had multiple surgeries and radiation treatments for T4 throat cancer. That type of cancer means it was not only found in the oral cavity (classified in degrees of severity from T1 to T3), but it had spread to adjacent areas to the throat.

Dr. Death - a nickname he received in junior-high school - was declared cancer free in 2005, has wrestled for the WWE & independent promotions and currently trains WWE developmental wrestlers. He truly is Dr. Life and the autobiography - with co-writer Tom Caiazzo - focuses heavily on his spiritual journey and the miracle of climbing out of the ring after having his hand raised in victory over cancer.

Williams - whose finishing moves that became a fan favorite included a shoulder block from a football three-point stance - became a wrestling star in singles and tag-team main events for Bill Watts in his Mid-South Wrestling & Universal Wrestling Federation promotions and the NWA. He has worked for other major promotions in the United States and has held a variety of championship belts.

But it was his work in Japan from 1989-1993 with Terry Gordy - as the tag-team, Miracle Violence Connection - that solidified Williams as a superstar. Along with partners Gordy, Gary Albright and Johnny Ace, Williams has held the All-Japan Wrestling tag-team title eight times.

Though it is the strength in faith and defeating the odds in his battle for life that truly makes this book a very powerful testimony in not giving up. "Number one is to do a lot of praying; God has a plan. Number two is to keep laughing and smiling; it's great medicine for everyone," says Williams, about his advice to cancer patients.

And in this world with so much in technological advances, but seemingly many more question marks than answers, Williams provides a perspective that delivers real meaning to the big picture of life.

5 out of 5 stars Dr. Death Steve Williams.......2007-03-08

First I want to say that I've been fortunate enough to meet Dr. Death Steve Williams several times in my life, The most recent being in 2003 when he was working for MLW. The guy is one of the nicest athletes I have ever met, He treats people/fans as if he's known you for 20 years, I'm not talking just posing for a picture with you and "thanks for coming to the show kid", I mean the man will answer any question you have and has no problem talking about anything and everything. The last time I met him he had a crowd of about 20 people young and old around him and he stayed there for about 2 hours! ok enough rambling now on to the book. It is a Great book, The best wrestling bio to come out in a long time. Covers a lot of Dr. Death's personal life as well as his Football days to Wrestling all over the globe. It's one of those books that you wish was a 1000 pages long because you want to hear in depth stories about places like Bill Watts Mid-South/UWF, WWE, WCW, ECW, & Japan. No inflated ego here like most other bios, Just an honest story about a tough hard working man who never gave up and always fought at 110% even when injured. The part of the book that explains being diagnosed with cancer is hard to read and will bring a tear to the eye, It's rough but the way Steve Williams writes about it is almost as if it's just another obstacle to overcome, Sure he was scared but he was confident as all hell that he was going to fight it as long as he could. I don't want to give too much of the book away but I'm just so glad I got it and will refer it to people constantly, If you have read any other wrestling bios and liked most of them then you will definitely like this. I think it's better than the Harley Race, Ric Flair, & Ole Anderson books...and that's saying something! & it's right up there with the Terry Funk & Mick Foley books. God Bless Steve Williams and good riddance to his cancer! This is one motivational story people, enjoy!

It would be a pity if this interesting, humane, and practical book were read only by parents of recently bereaved children--for two reasons. First, the book is about grief in a broad sense. Its lessons apply not only to the child whose pet, aunt, or parent has died, but also to the child whose parents have divorced, who has suffered a debilitating injury, or who has experienced other forms of traumatic loss. Second, let's face it: every child will suffer a loss at some point, so it behooves parents to be prepared in advance. As the authors say, "our task as parents is to prepare our children to deal with the experiences they will have."

It's unfortunate that the book has what might be considered a common structural flaw in self-help books. All of Part I (about 50 pages) is devoted to examining various myths about grieving and mistakes in dealing with it--for example, that the griever should keep busy and try not to feel bad. This is "good advice about bad advice," but it leaves the reader wondering why the authors didn't choose to get on with the plain old "good advice" on page 1. By Part II, it's already clear which coping techniques the authors will recommend. It would have been better to start there. --Richard Farr

Book Description

To watch a child grieve and not know what to do is a profoundly difficult experience for parents, teachers, and caregivers. Yet, there are guidelines for helping children develop a lifelong, healthy response to loss.

In When Children Grieve, the authors offer a cutting-edge volume to free children from the false idea of "not feeling bad" and to empower them with positive, effective methods of dealing with loss.

There are many life experiences that can produce feelings of grief in a child, from the death of a relative or a divorce in the family to more everyday experiences such as moving to a new neighborhood or losing a prized possession. No matter the reason or degree of severity, if a child you love is grieving, the guidelines examined in this thoughtful book can make a difference.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars excellent book.......2007-08-01

The book is readable, practical and filled with useful information. It would be helpful to both parents and professionals.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone needs this book!.......2007-05-28

"When Children Grieve" is a book every person should read. It explains just how significantly we are impacted by almost evey loss we experience.
Each and every one of us will experience loss in our lives. Most of us don't realize the impact those losses have on our future lives and the decisions we make when we have not gone through the grieving process. We need to ackowledge the changes that a loss brings to our lives.
This book thoughfully explains what grieving is and how to recognize it in your life.
I highly recommend it for everyone as a teaching resource for lifes lessons.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for any one going through a loss of any kind.......2007-04-03

This is a great book for anyone who has been through a move, divorce, pet loss, or loss of a loved one. It gives great solutions for resolve. Even if it has been years since your loss. Even though the title implies it is to help your children you can learn alot about yourself as well.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for All Parents.......2004-01-14

This book should be required for all parents. If you want to understand the basics of human and/or child behavior, this book is a must read. The book succinctly and lovingly explains the concept of "loss" and the emotional and physical responses to it-what we would normally call grief.

The beauty of this book is that grief is placed in a larger context. In other words, according to the authors, grief is the response when experiencing a "massive change or end from everything familiar." Therefore, children, and adults, can grieve a variety of situations: loss of a pet, moving to another neighborhood, or changing schools.

Therein rests the beauty of this book. This book explains how to help children. More importantly, the adults who are required to provide the assistance will learn more about their children and themselves.

So highly recommended, there are not enough stars to express this book's importance.

5 out of 5 stars Written With Gentle, Healing Hands.......2003-05-24

I am a conservative, grumpy, old, Lutheran pastor, vehemently opposed to all things "New Age." I despise the fads of pop-psychology. "Touchy-Feely" advice from so-called experts, who demand exorbitant fees, often makes me want to wretch. So, I approached this book filled with trepidation.

There was no need for my concerned.

Writing with extraordinary gentleness and common sense Mr. James, Mr. Friedman and Dr. Matthews have provided adults with an invaluable outline on how to shepherd the children in their lives through loss, grief and recovery. Every parent, grandparent, teacher, pastor, priest, rabbi, nurse or physician who expects the children in their lives to suffer the death of a pet, suffer the death of a relative, move or endure a divorce will benefit from reading this book.

Do yourself a favor. Read this book for the sake of the children whom you love. It is well worth the investment of your time.

Then, do yourself a second favor, and place a copy of this book in your church, synagogue or public library for the others who will grow by reading it.

5 out of 5 stars For Those Who Hurt.......2007-05-27

This is an excellent gift book, to give to people who are suffering the loss of loved ones, personal health, and other griefs of life. It is easily read, but the theology is sound and helpful.

5 out of 5 stars For Those Who Hurt.......2007-01-10

Excellent book for anyone going through a loss or time of grief - from Christian perspective. Beautiful pictures and layout.

5 out of 5 stars Solid biblical teaching on understanding suffering.......2006-01-31

I read this book 25 years ago, yet the truth rings the same today. I was very depressed at the time and didn't understand what was going on in my Christian life. How could I as a Christian be suffering with depression? Then I read this book, which used II Corithians 1:3-10 as it's basis, and found that the Apostle Paul stated he dispaired even of life. It states, how God is the God of all comfort. So if Paul the Apostle was dispairing of life and looked to the God of all comfort for help, then so should I. Dr. Swindoll goes into much greater detail, and does a very good job of driving the truth home. It helped me tremendously, know that God doesn't look down on us in our struggles, but has compassion. I highly recommend this book. I reference it in my suicide prevention website, (www.bungechord.com/suicide),and a link to purchase it, at Amazon.com of course. If you are stuggling with depression and/or in pain, this is a book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book.......2002-05-03

I love this book! I have given copies to many people I know when they are going through something difficult in their lives and I don't have the right words of comfort for them. This book helps to make sense of why we go through some of the things we do in life. I first read it 20 years ago and it helped me through a very difficult time in my life. Everyone should read this book!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books available on the subject.......1999-08-04

This book is (especially considering its brevity) one of the finest treatments of suffering available. It is sensitive, Biblical, and perfectly suited to pass on to anyone that is going through a difficult time. I highly recommend it.

"Powerful enough to fascinate even the most ardent skeptic and raise goosebumps on the arms of the believer...Profound."
TOPEKA CAPITAL-JOURNAL
Written by bestselling authors Dr. Melvin Morse and Paul Perry, TRANSFORMED BY THE LIGHT proves that those who return from the brink of death are profoundly changed for the better--spiritually and physically--for the rest of their lives, and that these documented changes provide deeper peace and understanding for all who come in contact with them. Inspirational and deeply compassionate, this book will change the way you think about the mysteries of life and death.

5 out of 5 stars Transformed By The Light, Dr Melvin Morse MD.......2007-09-07

I have read so many of these books and studied so much on this subject I should have an honorary degree by now if there was such a thing. :)
Seriously though, Dr Morse' books are the most well studied on the subject of near death experiences as he has does his dedicated research for many years bed side, both medically and psychologically. The authors books have given me insight to my inner soul. Reading and studying these books gives me the feeling of inner peace. Less fear of the unknown. Less fear of the inevitable aspect of the conclusion of life, death. As I am a believer in God, this gives me a heightened sense of peace in my soul that there is a "higher place" that the soul goes as the body is at it's final resting place.

5 out of 5 stars finally...near death experiences scientific, not spiritual propaganda.......2006-06-08

I really loved this book. I have had the unique problem of having had an experience that can only be attributed as a near death experience and a huge miracle. I wanted to be reading about near death experiences but found most books appealing more to people's need for some kind of spiritual sense than to scientific explanation. While both ends are needed, most books tend to be a spiritual base instead of looking to science and logic. This book was a god-send as it looked at experiences objectively from a scientific light!!! I would highly recommend this book!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Heaven has its downside.......2004-09-06

From TRANSFORMED BY THE LIGHT: "I was in a garden. All the colors were intense. The grass was a deep vibrant green, flowers were radiant reds, yellows, and blues, and birds of all beauty fluttered in the bushes. Everything was lit by a shadowless brilliance that was all-pervading. This light did not cast a shadow, which I realized when I cupped my hands tightly together and the palm side was just as light as the back side."

This is exactly what I hate about some of these near-death experiences. They're devoid of shadows. Devoid of chiaroscuro. (I can never remember how to correctly pronounce that word, but at least I can appreciate the stuff.)

5 out of 5 stars The Transformative Effects of the NDE.......2003-12-28

I've read many books on Near Death experiences over the years. In fact, I have over twenty of them on the bookcase beside me as I write this. Yet, I keep coming back to this one volume (I believe that this is the third time that I've reread it.) The reason for this is that it is the most "scientific" of the studies available to the general reading public. One would expect this of a book written by a practicing medical doctor. It is scientific, yet it is objective- this is no deconstructionist hatchet job. It is a true research study conducted with impressive thoroughness. The results are presented in the text in non-technical, non-statistical language, though the full paper with all the statistical results is included in the appendix.

First of all, this Transformations study takes the existence of NDE's as a proven fact. The author's previous research with the near death experiences of children left no doubt as to that (see his_Closer to the Light_.) This book deals with the lasting, measurable effects of the near death experience on people who experienced it in childhood (less of a chance of popular culture contamination.) A comprehensive battery of tests were applied to both NDE survivors and control groups (Ellsworth Profile of Adaptation of Life Survey, Greyson Value Survey, Greyson Near-Death Experience Validity Scale, Templer Death Anxiety Scale, Reker-Peacock life Attitude Profile, Greyson Negative Near Death Experience Survey, Neppe Subjective Paranormal Events Questionnaire, Neppe Temporal Lobe Sensitivity Inventory, Etc.) In addition, the participants complete medical and psychiatric histories were examined, as was a survey of their complete lifestyle and personal history. This was a very comprehensive in-depth study of a type not attempted before or since.

The results showed that the NDE survivors had significantly lower death anxiety and a higher zest for life. Verifiable psychic ability was four times higher than the general public. There were also indications that long-term conventional intelligence increased as a result- as well as creativity increase. The anecdotal sketches also demonstrate especially clearly that humanitarian and altruistic behavior was nearly always at a high level as a result of exposure to "the Light."

Why should we care about such research? Well, it tends to comfort those who hear about it, especially the sick and dieing, even though they have not had the experience themselves. It also tends to drive home our interconnectiveness as human beings and the need to treat each other with fairness, justice, and respect. It refutes the mechanistic concept that life is without purpose or reward. Oh yes, there is also the fact that it is the objective, verifiable, truth....

5 out of 5 stars Transformed by the Light.......2002-11-21

I just recently read this book and it shed light on what has happened to me in the past 15 years since my out of body experience.

I was transformed and went back to school; got my degree in therapeutic nutrition and have written & published four books. I have had a lot of help from beyond in writing these books, but Dr. Morse's book Transformed by the light has helped me cope with the changes in my life.

Thank you, Dr. Morse

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars On track and very helpful.......2007-06-21

Reisser does a great job of exposing and describing the silent epidemic of pain and suffering that many post abortive women are experiencing. I found this book to be right on track with describing the feelings I have experienced 10 years or more after my abortion. It does a very good job of recognizing the importance of one's spiritual perspective and family situation in the healing process. From my perspective, it is not overly "Christian" in perspective.

2 out of 5 stars A book for Christians only.......2003-06-16

This book definitely takes a religious perspective on the issue of abortion. As someone who is not a Christian, I found much of the advice to go contrary to my own religious beliefs about life and conception. If you are a Christian person who has been through an abortion, this book would probably be helpful to you as you recover. For me, many of the suggestions about thoughts and activities for healing just did not fit the situation. The book, like many others on this subject, also does not do much for women like me who needed a therapeutic abortion due to medical reasons. I am still waiting for someone to write a book that deals with the pain of having to abort a wanted pregnancy.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST FOR POST-ABORTIVE WOMEN.......2002-09-14

This book is a god-send to the post abortive woman. I have suffered from this "solitary sorrow" for 17 years. This book, along with the study, Forgiven and Set Free, has changed my life.

I was one of the ones who believed I could never be healed from this terrible "choice". Please buy this book if you have had an abortion - your life will change dramatically.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Resource.......2000-06-29

In this book, Teri Reisser, a marriage and family therapist and a pioneer in the field of abortion aftermath and healing, has presented an outline of the aftermath of abortion and its resolution in a "reader-friendly", gentle fashion. This is an excellent book for someone trying to make sense of an abortion experience. Working in the field of abortion healing myself, I know that many women have found this book most helpful to them.

4 out of 5 stars FROM A CHILDS POINT OF VIEW.......2007-02-08

I love reading about hauntings and near death experiences but this book was well researched and easy to understand telling about near death experiences from a child's point of view rather than the adult's point. I really liked reading about some of them and some of them really touched and moved me. I liked this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book that You Will Want to Re-Read!.......2005-04-04

I have read many books through the years about near death experiences - this one is my favorite! Because the near death expereinces are told by children, they come through clearly to the reader as "pure" and authenic.

The doctor has done extensive research about the NDR experience and he writes in a way that the layman - someone without his medical background - can understand. As interesting as the doctor's researach is, it is the recollections described by the children in such a matter-of-fact way that makes it so extraordinary.

After reading it, I came away with the feeling that, yes, this is truly a profound experience that many people have. In my opinion, having the NDR experience told in the simple and innocent way of children is one of the best sources to learn about it and to try to understand what a very special experience it is.

I remember reading in the early part of the book about when the doctor for the first time was being told about the NDR experience by a little girl who had technically drowned and he had helped revive. He must have been looking at her in an incredulous way as she was telling him about what had happened to her and seeing the shock in the doctor's face as he listened to her, she said, "Don't worry, heaven is fun!".

I promise you, if you read "Closer to the Light" you will NEVER forget it, and you will want to hold onto it and read it again and again and share it with your family and friends.

1 out of 5 stars He's talking to himself.......2007-07-24

This man has obviously struggled with the Great Questions, as all of us have. However, he has fooled himself (and, it appears, others) that he has received answers. All of his answers to life's Great Questions prove to be self-contradictory. His angel has told him that we chose our lives (including our suffering) prior to birth so that we would learn life lessons even though we cannot remember chosing. (Tell that to the abducted and molested children - this happened to you because you chose it to happen prior to your birth.) And that's the kicker! We're not supposed to intervene and stop suffering because they are pre-self-chosen paths for learning - we might interfere prior to the lesson learned. It's a sad book, because I think the author really has a psychological issue. His angel is all in his imagination - you can tell by the writing - they both have exactly the same personality. Furthermore, his angel doesn't give him spiritually awakening answers - the angel really just confirms to him what he has "always thought for years." How convenient. Sometimes the answers get pretty convoluted (sometimes it's quite entertaining if you can get past the sadness of his own delusion). The angel seems a bit limited - claims he is one with God, yet confesses he has a hard time explaining spiritual concepts. You'll love this: the angel and God are one-and-the-same, he says there is no need for names - yet, at one point in the book the angel berates Michael telling him that they (the angels) have their own lives and did Michael ever think about what they (the angels) might want or feel?!?

Gotta leave you with two passages from the book:

"We put you all together on one planet so that you would all have certain intense experiences available to you that would satisfy your requests. It's a matter of efficiency." --Evolution Angel

"I hardly consider myself enlightened. In fact, I'm somewhat of an idiot." --Michael Abrams (This was the only lucid statement in the book.)

2 out of 5 stars this book is not about NDEs.......2006-02-12

I thought this was a book on NDE. its not. Its some guy who used to be a doctor and now thinks he's a new age guru. First Chapter "the angel" [aka author's imagination] states there is no evil...everything is just hunky-dory. I've got news for the good doctor---there is evil in this world and pretending it doesn't exist is not going to help alleviate it. The new-agers may mean well but they are living in a fantasy.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning! And Beautiful........2002-08-12

I heard this doctor in a radio interview and was impressed enough to order both his books. But impressed as I was, I was not ready for the powerful message in this book.

Dr. Abrams is an emergency room physician, thus he sees a fair amount of death. Other medical people have written of seeing unusual, spiritual things at some deaths, so this isn't unique to him. But the doctor did ultmiately begin a discussion with the angel and this book contains some of those discussions.

The information is comforting, uplifting, and beautiful. It is also consistent with both common sense and scholarly translations of many of the earliest known books of the Bible. There isn't anything here I found to be new, but the way it is presented, and the natural impact of it, is absolutely stunning. The message is not limited to Christians, but all Christians will get a special pleasure from the angel's description of Christ.

I grew up in the Episcopal Church. I've read religions, theology, and spirituality for thirty years, and this is one of the two or three absolute best things I've ever had the pleasure of finding. It is a pure gift.

3 out of 5 stars Heaven in technicolor.......2007-07-28

R. Sigmund was in a terrible auto accident with 2 ribs through his heart--clinically dead--and was shown heaven for 8 hours. Although his account had some details that other books in this genre did not such as detailed descriptions of mansions as one example, I did not sense the awe that one would expect from such an 8 hour journey. It became somewhat repetitious--gold and jewels everywhere which began to sound almost worldly. His analysis of heaven was missing the incredible response of others who have been there and consequently produced a flat experience.
