5 out of 5 stars Enter the mind of an obsessive killer - and an obsessive hunter - is there that much of a difference?.......2007-09-13

Sandford is a brilliant writer and he shows how Lucas Davenport - the hero of the series - is walking that thin, sharp line between hero and villain right now. Suffering from depression (and likely post-traumatic stress disorder after the events in the preceeding book, Shadow Prey (Lucas Davenport Mysteries)), Lucas lets his temper take control early on while hunting down a young pimp who beat up one of his hookers - a young lady who was one of Lucas' snitches. This subsequently leads to an IA investigation at the worst possible time, because Lucas is then assigned to work on a new case - a well-known doctor's wife (Stephanie Bekker) has been murdered in their home, and her eyes cut out - an anonymous phone call alerted the police. When there is another murder, Davenport begins to suspect there might be a serial killer on their hands - even though he cannot make a connection between the two women.

Things heat up quickly in the novel and I have only given you a very bare bones idea of the plot - I don't want to spoil this novel for anyone who hasn't already read it. I love this series and this book is an exemplary example of why I feel about these books as I do. Lucas Davenport feels like a real person, with real problems that he deals with in a real manner - that is, sometimes self-destructively. I highly recommend this entire series to anyone who enjoys a good thriller, police procedural or murder mystery. You can't go wrong with the Lucas Davenport series.

2 out of 5 stars Sorry, but I really don't like this one.......2007-08-23

John Sandford is not the best of crime novel writers but he's not bad. I've read a couple other Prey books and have enjoyed them. They're good books to take to the beach or to read on a plane. The nice thing about them is that they don't require much concentration.

I am disappointed in this one. In fact, I'm only half way through and I don't think I'm going to finish it. What's the problem? It drags too much. I want a crime novel that is hard to put down. This one is easy to put down but hard to pick up again. Let me give an example. One of the main characters has a drug addiction. Sandford wastes pages (and virtually chapters) describing this guy's drug induced states. I got the idea the first time so I didn't need these descriptions repeated every couple of chapters. In fact, I've skipped those pages and haven't missed anything.

Other parts of the book are equally slow and boring. I'll try another of the Prey novels but will give up on Sandford if I find the same style.

5 out of 5 stars Another great one.......2007-05-17

I was thrilled to have another Prey novel to read. Eyes of Prey lived up to my expectations and was a great addition to the Prey series.

4 out of 5 stars Strong Entry in Prey Series.......2007-05-04

EYES OF PREY is the third entry in the "Lucas Davenport" series, and it's a strong effort. I liked this novel much better than the second in the series, SHADOW PREY, but less than the first in the series, RULES OF PREY.

The major strength of this novel is the villain, who is a truly despicable character. He is an easy person to hate, which makes for a classic "good vs. evil" kind of story. And, of course, Sandford is a highly entertaining writer -- that's what makes this books so popular. All his books are leanly written, fast paced and clever.

I thought the major problem with this novel was the lack of mystery. There is absolutely no question who the villain is and how he commits his crimes. The reader is almost always a few steps ahead of the characters. The only major shocking twist comes at the very end of this novel, but I was hoping for more surprises than I got.

The Prey novels aren't for everyone. If you dislike profanity and morally ambiguous characters, these books aren't for you. But I find them, for the most part, to be enjoyable, fast-paced fun. My advice is to read this books in order to maximize your enjoyment. In particular, read EYES OF PREY before reading SILENT PREY, which is a direct sequel to EYES.

5 out of 5 stars Eyes that can't quit........2007-01-18

I could not put this book down. I started reading it as I walked away from my mail box and did not quit until finished. This book will keep your interest. I love John Sanford's books, I think this is one of the best.

5 out of 5 stars private eyes.......2007-10-01

What a great book. Kept me buried in it till I was finished. The ending really was exciting. I love Jonathan Kellerman books. He makes you feel like you are right there watching almost like tv but reading instead.

5 out of 5 stars An incredible read.......2007-08-22

I stumbled onto Jonathan Kellerman peripherally, since I enjoy his wife's novels. Although I have read Private Eyes out of order of the Alex Delaware series, I didn't have any trouble accepting it as a stand-alone novel, nor did I feel there was something missing by not having read the earlier novels.

The book had a bit of the feel of an adventure or mystery computer game, where you just keep going back and forth to non-player characters to get new information, go complete a little side quest to unlock more information, and then go back to the same NPCs to get different conversations. However, the characters were an interesting and varied bunch of suspicious and neurotic people. During my reading of the book, there wasn't a single person other than Dr. Delaware himself who didn't come under suspicion, however briefly.

Alex Delaware is contacted by Melissa Dickinson, a patient he hasn't seen in nine years. She is now graduating high school and wants to go off to Harvard, but she's worried about her severely agoraphobic mother and needs Delaware's advice. When Melissa's mother turns up missing, Delaware, as Melissa's therapist, joins the investigation to find her. Any more twists and turns and surprise sub-plots, and I'd suggest that Kellerman should open his own pretzel factory, but it made for fascinating reading and I enjoyed it immensely. I'll look for more Delaware stories by Mr. Kellerman.

5 out of 5 stars Gotta love Milo........2006-06-20

This one starts with Dr. Alex Delaware getting a call from a young woman he treated years ago. Eleven years ago, Melissa Dickenson was a bright, precocious 7 year old girl afraid of everything - a result of growing up with a severely agoraphobic mother. Her mother Gina had been a beautiful actress when a heinous attack left her permanently disfigured and scared of the world - she hasn't left her house since. Little Melissa had to grow up fast to help care for her mother, but she grew up in a loving home none-the-less. Now, nine years after leaving treatment, she's a beautiful young woman herself, about to embark on her own life's adventure, except her mother's attacker is out of prison and back in town. She is desperate for help and Alex can't say no.

Detective Milo Sturgis is about half way through a six month suspension from the LAPD and he's going stir crazy. That's why he really can't resist when his pal Alex pleads for assistance. The free-lancing detective work is good for Milo - he makes some good contacts and gets to flex his deductive muscles, gets to step on some PD toes (always fun). But Gina vanishes and as Milo and Alex dig, they discover a trail of other disappearances as well as several possible deaths. Everyone has a possible motive and yet, no one has a possible motive - it's a real mystery.

Linda, the school principal, is back in Texas caring for her ailing father, leaving Alex to fend for himself. He reconnects with Robin - as friends - will they get back together? And the fish get some action too! Another great book with plenty of Milo this time. There's a scene in which Alex kind of ticks off Milo. The big guy gets genuinely angry and Alex is surprised to find himself scared. After all these years, he is actually afraid of his good friend - comments that he now knows how a suspect feels. Yeah, and of course Alex walks into a dangerous situation - again - almost gets himself killed - again. The climax is a bit of a surprise, though - bet you won't figure it out.

3 out of 5 stars Gripping, yet slow... Overall a good read, but Kellerman has done better.......2006-04-28

This book is gripping, and yet I found it a bit too slow (I know it does not seem to make sense...). A substantial amount of pages go by before anything actually happens and, even though the background is interesting, it stretches a bit too much. The characters are well developed, if somewhat unbelievable. The psychological aspects are also interesting. The relationship between Alex Delaware and Robin irritated me somewhat, and not for the first time. However, I really enjoy the Alex Delaware series, and I am being a bit harsh here mainly because I expect a lot from it and, while this book is definitely an enjoyable read, I have read better from this author. Another author from whom I expect less would have gotten 4 stars for a book such as this.

4 out of 5 stars Page-turner, Kellerman signature weird ending.......2005-08-08

Well, I never would have guessed the ending in a million years! In this great edition to the Alex Delaware psychologist/mystery solver series, a girl he treated many years ago visits Alex to ask for help for her mother. Gina, the recluse mom, was model-beautiful until someone threw acid on her face, and she never knew why. Get ready to find out why in this gripping thriller.

Kellerman likes to show us that the most ordinary-looking and -acting of people often have a devious, frightening side. Gina doesn't have to look too far from home to find her kidnapper. That's good for her, since she's a recluse!

It's an understatement to say Kellerman is a master at the psychological thriller. He created the genre!

5 out of 5 stars John Sandford is a literary genius!!.......2006-07-24

Johns books are addictive,if you buy one, you will ultimatly want to buy them all.Exspecially if you start with this book
rules of prey,it reads fast....and your heartbeat does its
best to keep up.

5 out of 5 stars 3 Prey's back to back. What more could you want?.......2001-02-21

If you want a book that will you can't put down, well then this is the one for you. I have all the Prey novels and to date I can trully say that they have been the best reads ever. Davenport is one hell of a cop, and delivers justice in the best two fisted way I've come to read. The Criminals are dark and sinister, and I know these three stories will keep the reader rivited till the end and still wanting more. I know I did, and can't wait for the next one.

5 out of 5 stars John Sanford is the best !.......1999-12-12

I have read all of the Prey series and am a really big fan. I wasn't always a person who does alot of recreational reading . But once i started the Prey series I can't stop I have read them all and am ready for his next release. I still think my favorite was Rules of Prey.

3 out of 5 stars The most evil villains I have ever read........1998-08-22

I have read five of the "Prey" novels so far, including these three stories. Obviously, there is something about them that I find attractive, but in retrospect, I cannot honestly say what. The writing style is pleasant, but not taxing, and draws you along. The villains are the most evil people that I have ever read about, and always come to the same end. The number of psychos inhabiting John Sandford's Midwest is truly frightening, yet doesn't seem to surprise the locals. These books are the "sitcom-lites" of literature, but easy and quick to read.

5 out of 5 stars Three great mystery books in one........1997-04-07

Sandford is a master at weaving this type of story. He keeps you reading through all three novels like it was one story. It was nice to see a author finally pick the great state of Minnesota for a setting

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars People, this is NOT real life PI information.......2002-11-22

After reading some of the other reviews, I am compelled to write again. This book contains almost no information relating to what really happens in a PI's life! The book is being marketed as a resource for mystery writers to show what goes on "behind the scenes" when working cases. I am here to tell you that if what the authors described really happened, the PI would likely find him or herself in court being sued and/or being placed under arrest for violating local, state, and Federal laws. I don't know where the authors found this "consultant" but the stories he shares quite frankly make me ill. This book does nothing but perpetuate myths and lies about the industry.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2002-04-23

I have to say that I was really disappointed with this book. For the most part, the book is nothing more than stories of the personal experiences of a real PI. While real life stories can certainly help a writer, I would have perferred a little more facts regarding the legal aspects of private investigating and a little more information on private investigating in general instead of just mostly reading about one PI. I came away from this book not knowing much more than before I read it. I really wouldn't recommend buying it. I'd suggest purchasing JUST THE FACTS, MA'AM instead. I found it to be much more informative than this one.

1 out of 5 stars Skip This One.......2002-04-19

Unless you just have to own every single book in the Howdunit Series, I'd really recommend skipping this one. It did help me out a little but, for the most part, I found the information contained in this book to be useless. The authors spend way too much time talking about real PIs and their experiences. It's as if the writers are saying that you should base your fictional PI and his experiences on the real ones in this book. Do the authors not realize that a person can be sued for that? The authors even waste several pages of the book to do nothing but give physical descriptions of real PIs. The book actually takes the time to state that the average height of PIs is 5'10'' and the average weight is 175. Why exactly is that important? A PI can look like whatever a writer wants him or her to look like. The PI can be a little green man from Mars if the writer wants him to be. Although if the PI is a Martian, then the writer obviously isn't shooting for realism and doesn't need a book to help them be more realistic in the first place. The authors also spend too much time stating that what we see on TV isn't completely realistic. Like anybody with half a brain can't figure that one out on their own. The book contains very little about laws and regulations, which was what I was looking for. A few accounts of personal experience are fine, but I feel that the book would have been much better if there had been a lot less of that and more about each state's regulations and other things such as that. I just found this book to be a complete waste of money and time. I wouldn't recommend it.

2 out of 5 stars Not realistic.......2001-08-27

As a licensed and practicing private investigator, I can tell you that this book does not describe the experiences shared by 90% of real life PIs. Much of what is written appears to have been embellished by either the authors or the consultant to be more dramatic and exciting. For example, Mr. Blythe describes how local law enforcement would encourage private citizens with problems to go directly to his home, no matter what time of day or night. Come on! No officer whom I have ever met would do such a thing! Mr. Blythe describes how easily PIs can obtain a full credit report on someone. Very illegal in 99% of the cases!!! This is a great book if you are looking for ideas of how to get your PI in legal hot water. Other than that, check out Greg Fallis' book in this same series for reliable info.

4 out of 5 stars As the title states, this is a valuable guide for writers........1999-08-12

Very few of us get the opportunity to experience the actual day to day environment of the "cops and robbers'" world. "Private Eyes" does a very good job of showing us what goes on in the everyday life of the private investigator, as well as the police detective. Written jointly by two professors of creative writing and an ex-policeman turned private investigator, this book offers an interesting and helpful insight into the profession of crime investigation. Writers need to be factual in their descriptions. After reading this book I found myself editing some of the relevant data I had erroneously included in my novel. It pays to do good research, and this book worked well for me.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Guy Noir Rules!.......2007-03-26

I am a long time listener of A Prairie Home Companion. I always look forward to Saturday evenings at 6, when my local station airs APHC. The show is great and pokes fun at politics, headline news, and just old funnies in a non-threatening way.

Guy Noir is my second favorite part of the show, following Garrison Keillor's "News from Lake Wobegon." Each week the theme song is played and Guy Noir is involved in a wonderful sketch filled to the brim with laughs as he goes and solves mysteries, for he is Private Eye.

5 out of 5 stars hilarious, well written, with excellent sound effects and music.......2007-03-15

This collection of "Guy Noir" routines, lifted from A Praire Home Companion, are very funny. Garrison Keillor and his merry band of actors give a sense of the old time radio drama? with these. The sound effects are excellent and the theme is pretty cool. Both series are great.

3 out of 5 stars Not As Funny As The Original.......2007-01-19

The FIRST Guy Noir release was more faithful to the original conceit of Noir - as a hard-boiled detective talking tough with his clients, his friends and his women.

Here, you get something else: Guy's much more self-conscious. While interacting with PHC guest stars would normally promise some greater variety, it is honestly not too forthcoming. He has become fussy and self-absorbed, and a lot of the great tough talk present in earlier episodes is missing here.

It's a good listen - and I love PHC, too. It's just not as good as the very first release...

5 out of 5 stars GOOD, SMILE-PROVOKING LISTENING.......2006-01-03

What great, good, smile provoking fun! Fans of Garrison Keillor and a Prairie Home Companion will thoroughly enjoy this 11 episode collection of detective stories originally heard in live broadcast.

If you missed these sketches on the radio, not to worry - now you can meet Guy, the intrepid gumshoe who chases crime from St. Paul. Sam Spade and Hercule Poirot would duck their heads in shame to learn of Guy's exploits. After all, he never knows whether the knock on his door means a fish has been filched or Henry Kissinger needs help.

In this parody on the old-time private eyes, we can't resist the guy or Guy who keeps his vigil on "A dark night in a city that knows how to keep its secrets but high above the empty streets, on the 12th floor of the Acme building, one man is still trying to find the answers to life's persistent questions."

Keillor is supported by members of the Prairie Home companion cast, thus "Guy Noir" is a terrific ensemble performance. Among the sketches are

Gotham Gets The Girl
Operator
Bad Grits
Gotta Go
Bad Blood
Picnic Plaid
Movie Shoot
Hotdish Hangover
Renata Flambe
Snow Job
Missing Fish.

Very highly recommended - don't miss it!

5 out of 5 stars The Adventures of Guy Noir - Radio private eye.......2005-10-30

I am a professional truck driver from Quebec and I discovered the wonderful world of Garrison Keillor two years ago while listening to NPR Radio. It took me several months to find out who he was and finally found Prairie Home Companion via the Internet and listened to many of the programs from the archives. Since then I have religiously tuned in to its weekly program with News from Lake Wobegon and Guy Noir, Private Eye. When I bought the CD "The Adventures of Guy Noir" about the famous Private Eye; my wife and children all fell in love with its hilarious stories. I regularly listen to his adventures in my truck while travelling all over Canada and the USA. Guy Noir a.k.a Garrison Keillor, you are the best. I can't wait to get "the rest of the stories."

Book Description

The Private Eye is a program about the drama and wonder of looking closely at the world, thinking by analogy, and changing scale. It's also about theorizing. Designed to develop higher order thinking skills, creativity and scientific literacy - across subjects, it's based on a simple set of "tools" that produce "gifted" results. Hands-on, investigative, The Private Eye - using everyday objects, a jeweler's loupe, and simple questions - accelerates science, writing, art, math and social studies, as well as vocational and technological education. It builds communication, problem solving, and concentration skills. For K-12 through life, all levels, The Private Eye develops "the interdisciplinary mind."

5 out of 5 stars A superb Science Book.......2006-06-01

This book is clearly written with illustrations to demonstrate a point or demonstrate the type of artwork you can expect with a child.

It is an excellent book that teaches you how to put the scientific method to use. It teaches you to think creatively and to see the world in a new way. It is an exciting method for the teacher and if the teacher thinks it is exciting, then the children are ecstatic.

I bought this for my homeschool classroom and have not regretted it one bit. If I were to return to teaching this would be one of the books I would bring back to the classroom.

And it is inexpensive. With this book, a sharp pencil, a loupe and some drawing paper the world is open to you. It is a new way of looking and thinking and delving deeper and making comparisons between things.

The first chapter gives a great overview of the method and the rest of the chapters develop the theme further.

Well worth every penny. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars if you are just looking for a simple implementation model to put the scientific method to work, this is it!.......2005-09-13

At first glance, the book gives the cursory impression that it is a detective novel.

Drawing an analogy, i.e. applying the principles taught by this book, the reader's initial impression is not totally wrong.

If I am allowed to play with key words, this book shows you how to become a "detective": to detect what is around you, your backyard, on this Planet Earth. It provides you with "novel" approaches, with the use of the accompanying jeweler's loupe (5x magnification), to help you to observe & think about the world around you, draw an analogy, theorise a model, solve a(ny) problem(s), compose & write a report, stay in focus, communicate to & discuss your findings & with others.

It then takes the reader on a journey of discovery that incorporates mathematics, science, social sciences, art, literature, and creative writing & inventive thinking, plus some wit & humour, which encapsulates the intended inter-disciplinary curriculum.

In comparison with `How to Think Like a Scientist', by Stephen Kramer, which I have reviewed earlier, I would say this pleasant book puts (or pushes) the scientific thinking processes to work, right in your backyard. The book, not only explains the scientific method in greater depth, and demonstrates real-world applications with simple everyday tools, it helps the reader to develop a multi-disciplinary mind towards understanding & appreciating our beautiful planet.

There are plenty of photographs & illustrations in the book. At this particular juncture, I disagreed with one reviewer who lamented that this book was "messy." Bear in mind, "messy" is the starting (or flash) point for problem solving & creative thinking. A springboard for the Private Eye Program!

To share with readers who are teachers (or parents who want to be learning facilitators at home), I would like to add that this book actually provides me with the terrific framework to design my 5-day learning camp for young kids (from primary four to six), aptly entitled, `Science & The Art of Discovery.' In addition to the jeweler's loupe, each participating kid gets a copy of `How to Think like a Scientist', as well as a disposable camera, a Einstein note-pad, a 4-colour writing pen, a large pack of colour markers, 100-gm A3 size multi-colour art blocks, sticker labels, scissors & glue sticks, together with unlimited access to Googolplex & K'nex construction components.

To sum up, & if you are just looking for a simple working or implementation model to put the scientific method to work, right in your own backyard, this is it! I therefore rate this book a 5!

4 out of 5 stars Great ideas but messy........2005-07-20

This book has a wonderful basic idea. It introduces the power of looking deeper, and shutting out peripheral distractions, inherent in the use of a 'jeweller's loupe', or in-eye magnifying lens, and relating this to the putting forward of analogies to what is observed in the 'close up' view. The analogies found can then be used as the basis of poetry, scientific postulation, extended discussion, or whatever. Many examples are given, in the form of suggested lesson outlines, but the layout and flow of the book is less than clear, and the visual impact is messy.

5 out of 5 stars fresh, unique, and fun!.......2002-09-19

Whatever topic and level you teach, K-12, this book has creative and intriguing activities that any teacher can put to quick classroom use with just one purchase--an inexpensive loupe. The open-ended explorations of natural structures (leaf veins, for example) have applications in science, art, math, and language arts. Kids learn how to observe, classify, analyze--all the science process skills--but they also learn how to think creatively, visually, and poetically. A 5-year-old can get as much out of these projects as a teen--maybe more. One of my favorite teacher books, hands-down.

5 out of 5 stars This is the book I MOST REGRET LOSING, I'll buy #2!!.......1999-05-21

I was introduced to this book in my integrated science class in teacher training at PSU. My mind took flight as I shared visual discoveries with my cohort members. The links are so logical to art and poetry, as one's world transforms inexplicably from our everyday consciousness to a private universe of a world hitherto unseen. I have tried to put my hands on my copy of this book about five times--I give up! I will buy another--and a classroom set of 5x eyeloupes. It will become a regular addition to my substitute teacher "bag o' tricks". Thanks, Private Eye, for a new world!!

Book Description

Revealed at last--secrets and surprises from ace detectives Chet Gecko and Natalie Attired's criminal casebook!

This nifty (and very handy) handbook features tips and techniques for detective work: how to shadow people, collect evidence, and conduct searches; photocopy-ready documents that every private eye needs--license, search warrants, forged sick-day notes from parents; a list of suspects and pointers on how to ID the crooks; a guide to detective lingo for all you shamuses; and tasty recipes for distinctively Chet Gecko-ish snacks, including Tick Tacos and Sweet Potato-Bug Pie (minus the bugs, of course).

It doesn't take a private eye to see that this book is F-U-N.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great detective handbook (a review by Eli 7 years old).......2006-07-10

This is a great and funny book. Even the recipes are pretty funny. Not only that this book is funny but it is also good at teaching kids how to be a Private Eye (PI). Another great thing about this book is that three authors worked together on it, which makes it very interesting. The recipes are great as well. The funniest thing about this book is when the bird and Chet Gecko write what they are saying. This is one of the funniest books I have ever read.

5 out of 5 stars Chet's cooking up reading.......2005-11-13

Chet Gecko, not to be confused with GEICO, solves mysteries with wit and punditry, and cooks up great stories as well. This collection includes several recipes sure to please even the most reptilian tastes, and entice kids (esp. boys) into reading more of the series. Once you read Chet Gecko, you can never listen to Garrison Keillors Adventures of Guy Noir without laughing out loud and thinking of Chet transported out of his lovely lizard body and into Mr. Noir's world. If the Sweet Potato Queens turned into geckos and wrote a book for kids, this would be the result.

    Book Description

It's a dark night in a city that knows how to keep its secrets, but high above the mean streets, a light burns on the 12th floor of the Acme Building, where Guy Noir--hard boiled, world-weary, yet surprisingly articulate--is trying to find the answers to life's questions. In his big swivel chair under the bare bulb beside the beat-up gray file cabinet, he awaits the call of his clientele: the disappointed, the paranoid, the embittered, the rejected. But instead of a paying customer, what does he get? A knock on the door from Pete, who has shot and killed Guy on many occasions in the past, and yet the two of them are still friends. What can a guy do? If you're Guy Noir, you get up and open the door. Life is no picnic, pal, and friendship so often leads to violence, but you can't walk away from these things.... 1995 Grammy® Award nominee 1½ hours on 1 audiocassette

5 out of 5 stars first of two very funny series.......2007-03-15

This first collection of "Guy Noir" routines, lifted from A Praire Home Companion, are very funny. Garrison Keillor and his merry band of actors give a sense of the old time radio drama? with these. The sound effects are excellent and the theme is pretty cool. Both series are great. I wish they'd lift more of them to create a few more series.

2 out of 5 stars Not the Noir I know.......2005-12-03

I love PHC and Guy Noir. Does anyone remember (or know where I can get) the St. Patrick's Day show he recorded in Dublin, Ireland? The Guy Noir skit on that broadcast was high-larious.

This particular collection is a 9-track running joke. It has its standout moments with fantastic feats of alliteration in a couple tracks and the old fashioned sound effects are fun . . . but, as another post here says, it gets less funny as it goes along.

The essence of comedy is brevity and most of these skits take too long. I recall the Guy Noir skits I heard on the radio being shorter, much more varied and having a bigger cast with more fantastic stories. Most of these tracks just drag on as if by taking longer to get to the punchline the same old shtick will become funnier; mostly, it doesn't work. Unless you're a real die-hard fan completing your PHC collection, this CD is a monotonous disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars When Guy Noir Was Really Funny.......2005-10-17

Buy this album! It will bring you back to a time before Garrison Keillor and Prarie Home Companion descended as completely into self-absorption and self-parody as they are today.

A time ago Keillor described New York performance artists as "raging narcissists." He was right, but did not know how he was predicting his own aesthetic future.

And you'll see it so clearly here. For one thing, Keillor shares the Guy Noir stage with someone other than a sound effects man: the character of Pete is essential to understanding Guy Noir's psyche. We can guess that Pete was phased out so that Noir, as portrayed today, is more of a loner. But it might also have had to do with the fact that Pete pretty consistently upstaged Guy - you be the judge.

But what really matters, of course, is the quality of the comedy here, and it's just great. Word plays, tongue twisters, great plots - it's bright, original, funny and deliciously ironic. You'll love it!

    4 out of 5 stars Longtime listener.......2004-08-18

I have played this tape so often that it's worn out. I have some of his other tapes but this one is by far my favorite. I especially like the rendition of Lida Rose. Also, if you admire alliteration and all that amusement, you'll absolutely adore it!

3 out of 5 stars Amusing in Small Doses.......2003-02-04

Guy Noir is sort of a Philip Marlowe/Sam Spade kind of a guy. His friend of 30 years, Pete, might pass for Miles Archer, Spade's late, lamented partner in "The Maltese Falcon." Each skit involves Guy confronting Pete over some incongruous issue. The duo devise deliciously alliterative dialog, but become belligerent, and the burgeoning bellicosity soon embroils them in a gun battle. They invariably wind up killing each other. Cliche's from the golden age of radio drama abound as the two "friends" deal with all sorts of modern day issues. My first thought upon listening to the first episode was "Dr. Phil meets Philip Marlowe."

The first two or three episodes had me laughing out loud, but the longer I listened, the less funny it became. Don't listen to the episodes straight through. Listen to them one at a time, and give yourself a couple of weeks between episodes.

3 out of 5 stars Review on PRIVATE EYE.......2006-02-21

This book was okay but it didn't sizzle by any stretch of the imagination. While the plot was fine, the telling of it was only moderately good. Josh was a cool guy, however.

5 out of 5 stars Beguiled by Lori Foster!!.......2001-11-17

Dane Carter is pretending to be his brother Derek while he searches for Derek's killer. He thinks he's got a hot lead when Angel Morris walks into his--Derek's--office. The more he learns of her relationship with his brother--that Derek had betrayed her trust, had her fired from her job, fathered her child, then left her--the more it looks like Angel could be Derek's killer. Yet, the more he learns of Angel, the more he knows it isn't her. When it turns out someone is trying to kill Angel, Dane is left with finding the real killer and protecting the woman he loves.

Lori Foster's ability to pull readers into the story and not let go until the very last page is what makes her such an enduring favorite!

    3 out of 5 stars Puzzling........2001-07-26

First, let me say this was a good book. I love a hero who is burned out and a heroine who looks for the good in people. But...I found myself constantly looking at the author's name to verify that it said Jayne Ann Krentz on the cover. There was none of her signature humor or crackling sexual tension. As it has a 1999 copyright date, I would expect her usual style. Could this be a much older book that wasn't published until 1999? If you're a JAK fan, you might be disappointed. If you like sweet romance with a little sex and interesting minor characters, this is the book for you.

    5 out of 5 stars A Super Twofer..........2001-05-24

If you like your romance steamy, your men hot and your women feisty then these two stories are a must-have for your collection. Jayne Ann Krentz gives us a vintage tale of love, lust and confusion between detective Josh January and innkeeper Maggie Gladstone. This is wonderful Krentz stuff, the affair is believable, the characters charming and the story holds us to the last kiss! Lori Foster gives us a harder-edged tale of brotherly love taken to a new dimension when Dane Carter replaces identical (and dead) twin Derek at the helm of their company and in the bed of former girlfriend Angel Morris. A tale that could have become sloppy and unpleasant remains taut and enthralling, the steamy sensuality will melt your heart and leave you cheering for the eventually triumphant couple. Cetainly the plots are predictable, and there is little mystery in whodunnit, but do we buy romances for mystery? You'll find plenty of what we do buy romances for between the covers of this book!!!

    4 out of 5 stars couldn't put it down.......2000-04-13

This was my first Lori Foster book. I loved every minute of it. After reading it I went out and bought four other Lori Foster books. I like authors who don't portray the hero as a wimpy romantic. Her male characters are more masculine, while still being romantic. I happen to have three older brothers, me being the only girl in the family, so I can also say I like her female characters better, because they are not all wishy washy. I also love finding authors who are as good with the secondary characters as the main characters, and she definitely fills that bill. Keep Writting Lori!
