It's just average.......2006-07-08
If you're looking for the "best ever" kitchen book, look on. This one is just average. It's outdated and, unless you're a complete beginner in the remodeling game, won't tell you much you haven't already learned or thought of on your own. (Just for example: the author is clueless about butcher-block countertops, saying that they must be scrubbed with a wire brush every week. ??? I've had butcher block countertops, and neither I nor anyone I've ever known has been silly enough to use them as unfinished cutting boards. And do we really need to be told that countertops should be level and cleanable? Oh, darn, I was thinking about a wavy sod surface--I guess that's out.) "This Old House Kitchens," although far from new, is far more helpful. I was disappointed after the rave reviews here. I probably paid around $15 incl. shipping and it wasn't worth that much.

I've never written any book review before, but feel compelled to let others know how great this book is. I've looked through over thirty (30) books on kitchen projects-at libraries/in bookstores/from an architect- and found none I wished to own but this one. It's almost too thorough, as many of us just wish to read conclusions and then go on to the next project. This book covers ALL aspects of a kitchen project, including detailed reference/contact material at the end of the book. So don't waste your time reading anything else-- it's the only book on the topic I've actually purchased and I don't regret it for a minute.

Not a cookbook, but a really valuable guide for anyone who wants to build or remodel, Jan Weimer's "Kitchen Redos, Revamps, Remodels & Replacements" is a superior sourcebook. Not for nothing is this volume subtitled "Without Murder, Suicide, or Divorce." The problems inherent in letting strangers run rampant through your domain, charging fees left and right, have been known to harden even the most optimistic of homeowners.
Weimer does an admirable job of making the reader examine thoroughly his or her kitchen needs--and then divide them into "needs" and "wants." She can take a glimmer of an idea and give you the hard facts on how it would work on a day-to-day basis. She covers such neglected topics as contractual obligations of the contractors, kitchen lighting, countertop choices, and depth of storage cabinetry.
There is such an abundance of information herein that it would takeý-well, it would take a book to tell you all about it. And here is that book, highly recommended by yours truly, who has been through the kitchen design/house-building experience.

Garden Party Murder.......2007-09-16
The suspense picks up for the second Death on Demand,"Design for Murder." Annie Laurence is dithering about a wedding to Max Darling, she wants small--he wants big into the fray comes Chastain socialite Corinne Prichard Webster with an offer no budding mystery bookstore owner can refuse. Corinne wants Annie to design a murder to be staged during their annual garden/home show, the parts to be played by local citizens with prizes and clues to rake in funds for the Historical Society.
Before Annie's carefully planned production begins someone is out to sabotage Corinne's plans with a poison-pen letter exposing all the sins of the actors. Then Corinne ends up floating in her own garden pond.
The pace is fast as Annie and Max race to save her program and discover a killer. Lots of southern tradition is found within the pages of "Design for Murder."

Welcome to a southern mystery night!.......2006-07-18
This second in the Death on Demand series is a good, solid mystery. We still get that wonderful name-dropping from the world of "mystery fiction", and we get Annie planning a murder-mystery surprise for a small Southern town's annual spring celebrations. And no one is more surprised than Annie and Max when a real mystery occurs in the little town of Chastain. As they delve into motives and opporturnites they find more secrets in this little town than they ever dreamed. It was fun reading about their efforts to solve the mystery of the death of one of Chastain's leading citizens, while Annie's scripted plot ran through the book.I think I'm going to enjoy this series.
Mystery Game-board, Black Checkers `n Chin (No Gin). Reader/Author Double Win........2005-11-25
This 2nd in the DEATH ON DEMAND series has an intriguing set of intro chapters which compete with the brilliance of the pilot's opening salvos.
After the classic-mystery jazz-steps of the intro chapter pair sat me down in my chair, I, of course, couldn't resist reading further. As I did so, I couldn't help but notice that the contrast of the society maven's chill to Annie's enthusiasm was dramatic and effective.
Transition-ed from that point of awe, I was warmed into the story by Annie's reaction to being asked to do a mystery program and get paid $1000. As noted above, Annie's "badee, badee, badee" enthusiasm was an engaging contrast to the perfect portrayal of the repulsive chill of the society maven. What with the up angle in which Carinne carried her rigid, frigid chin, she'd never develop horizontal neck wrinkles, though vertical, hair-line-fissures would likely apply in rivulets. And, I'd bet money I have not, that one of her eyebrows was spring loaded.
A couple questions came to me early in the reading:
-- Was Annie going to use the Maven as victim and Roscoe as murderer, as a reality switch to the victim and perpetrator in the murder mystery game Annie was being paid to produce?
-- How would the contention between Annie & Max over having a fancy Vs intimate wedding relate to the plots-within-plots, and their resolution?
Hart entertainingly dramatized Annie's cracking out of the egg of an endearing, feisty childhood (even as a "mature," brilliant, and independent young woman), with Max as a backdrop of the truly mature, already-arrived one in the self-actualization game. In this sense, the irony of Annie's compulsive responsibility bounced off Max's (seeming) childish nonchalance was well wrought. And, Hart's periodically designing Annie as wrong and Max as right could be taken as proof that Hart's healthy self-depreciation and personal generosity has cancelled any egotism or arrogance in her character.
I believe that those tendencies seem to magnetically attract themselves to most creative persons; maybe it's the charisma they're charged (up) with. Me too. I, I, I be creative! Gotta get these thumbs out of my vest. But, only because it's hard to type that way. "Me, me, me." (Practicing my operatic slavos. Doe & Ray are continually dogging my voice, trying to get ahead.)
The type of sexual tension toyed with between Annie & Max is refreshing. It sometimes feels delightfully (and effectively) staged (like culinary mysteries collecting quotas of cooking hits, which I, for one, appreciate, yum intended). Hart's romantic sidelines are fun, cute, warming, and absolutely appropriate for her characters and genre. I appreciate the fact that the innuendos aren't obviously spiced for reader turn on ... Hart's style of sexual undertone is Leo's childlike, playful toying with male-female differences; it's not Scorpio's intense and steamy, heavy-hitting below the belt (which has been well-placed and hotly-paced in the romance genre). In my opinion Hart's style of light, Leo romance suits this series to a "T" ... or maybe I should say, to a steam-rolled-over "R."
It was worth my time to savor Hart's artistically portrayed characterizations. An especially luminous introductory description of the society maven's niece follows:
>>The young woman was as clearly limned as if by a spotlight, her attractive auburn hair glistening like the flank of a sundrenched Kentucky colt, her delicate, anguished face a study in anger.

My first flash upon reading the segment around the above quote was of Daisy in THE GREAT GATSBY, though of course Daisy is lifetimes jaded while Gail is a fresh pick (which is not meant to diminish either character, it's merely to attempt to get the contrast clear while the comparison is made).
Another great character description:
>> Corinne looked every day of her fifty-nine years, her cheekbone drawn so tight that hairline wrinkles marched on her upper lip like a stockade fence.

So was it the facelift or the upward chin habit which did Corinne(`s youthful plushness, if she ever had any) in?
In this second in the DOD series, I was captivated and literarily impressed by its use of various levels of mysteries as an echoing mirror-within-mirror, reality-within-reality. This novel could go undercover as an entertaining class on the genre, which I was certainly able to benefit from, because I'm not anywhere near as well read as most buffs of classic mysteries.
Some readers have reported feeling irritated or insecure at the mention and plot use of such an awesome collection of reality mystery titles, many of which are known only to mystery buffs of the first water. I can understand that natural sensitivity. Yet, I see that situation as an opportunity to introduce myself into the nuances of the genre, and to spotlight other series I might like to explore. I also receive a pleasant hit of recognition when one of the titles or authors happen to be one I've actually read. This constant "listing" of mysteries also allows me to know I'll be able to return to reread this series and get even more out of it as I progress in my consumption of offerings in the genre. So much to look forward to. Even with my having read so few classic mysteries, I had no trouble keeping up with the story and retaining a solid and strong interest within full entertainment regalia.
The resolution of tangents, sidetracks, mysteries within mysteries was satisfyingly, almost uncannily smooth. The mood-and-action to wrap, as expected, held several surprises and variations on mystery form schematics. The style was an opposite type of drama from the resolution of the pilot to the series, in which Annie & Max dug into a hilarious bull-dog standoff (after the murder-mood-run had its due).
Overall, to me, the style of DBD gave evidence that Hart's confidence in this series had leaped beyond growing pains, as she seemed to be taking her time developing the plot-lines without losing a Quantum of reader interest. The graceful flow exposed an author absolutely relaxed in her craft, certain of its guarantee to result in reader involvement and appreciation. This isn't to imply that Hart hadn't been a fully-seasoned author for many years prior to this novel. It's merely to note that the author's relaxation with developing characters and machinations seemed to show off a well seated rhythm and stride here.
More than most, this novel showed me why mystery afficionados reportedly reread stories in this genre. There's enough in each offering that a reread will continually surface segments which appear to have been written in invisible ink the first time around.
Well done Oh Mystery Queen, who knows how to honor the gestalt of her genre.

Got me almost to the end.......2004-09-10
What a great mystery - it was almost Perry Mason-like with seeing all the suspects at the beginning of the book and why they would have a motive to kill Corinne. Also like Perry Mason you had to pay attention to what was going on. It was a good believable story. I really enjoyed it and cannot wait to start the next book in the series.
A Touch of the South.......2003-10-25
Carolyn Hart write wonderful stories set in the South. I always like the way Annie name drops about detective fiction at the start and the beginning or each story, but rarely in the middle. I always wonder if the author does this on purpose or is just the way story develops. This is a find follow-up to Death On Demand, although there are parts that are overly predictable and
sterotypic.

Could be better.......2007-07-23
Fascinating topic, but seems more focused on union-labor relations and politics than the highway itself. Lacks maps to back up descriptions of local geography, and the conclusion was extremely weak.
Some other books about New Jersey history and geography that I found a better read are Robert Sullivan's excellent Meadowlands, Looking for America on the New Jersey Turnpike by Gillespie and Rockland, and for the true hardcore transportation geeks and wonks out there: Doig's Empire on the Hudson.
A missing piece of history.......2007-07-07
Let me start by saying that I was born in Jersey City in 1940 and lived there until 1956. My father had his business there and after I finished school, I wound up in the family business. Because my dad was always interested and somewhat involved in politics, I still retain some knowledge and awareness of that one of a kind era.
I can vividly remember going to Journal Square and passing over the manmade cuts that looked like canyons to a young boy. And when I attended Dickinson High School, looking down on the approaching traffic to the Holland Tunnel.
This is a book that I've been looking for someone to write for many years. If you are from Jersey City or Hudson County and were born before 1950, so many memories will return. If you have any interest in machine politics, union labor or history in general, this is a great find. I couldn't put the book down and was very disappointed when I was finished.
Mister Hart could do us all a favor by supplementing his research and writing a complete history of Jersey City (Hudson County).
A Brisk Read.......2007-06-09
The Last Three Miles has as its most specific focus the construction of what is now known as the Pulaski Skyway. Serving as macrocosm are the machinations of politicos and union men and corporations before and during the construction of America's first viaduct/superhighway. The cast of characters is nigh Shakespearean, and Steven Hart is particularly good at breathing life into the major players. Foremost is Frank Hague, Irish tough and one of America's great political bosses. Serving as foil is Teddy Brandle, the thuggish union boss who becomes rich and powerful by playing ball with Hague, and whose dispute with his patron over the construction of a hospital leads to the climactic labor struggle which serves as climax in Hart's narrative. Also making an appearance is railroad engineer, intrepid world-traveler and lothario Fred Lavis. There are many others.
In less deft hands, the book could easily have exceeded 500 pages, and been rendered unreadable to anyone not a historian by the inclusion of tedious minutiae. Hart's great gift is whittling down the story to its most concise threads, threads that pull the reader happily along. He tells his tale with wit and vigour, somehow managing not to skimp on essential context, situating his New Jersey narrative within the larger framework of labor woes and Tammany Hall-style 'democracy' and federal intervention in local public works. It's a great read. I laughed out loud at several points, most heartily during a catalog of the salaries and 'duties' of several well-paid Hague henchmen. Hart even manages to take the reader on a harrowing ride along the Skyway's hazardous route.
Hart treats his subjects fairly and allows their flaws largely to speak for themselves, which is refreshing. It's easy to condemn guys like Hague and Brandle for their paranoia and brutish excesses, ignoring their often astonishing achievements. The Last Three Miles documents both in an entertaining and enlightening manner, reminding us that this was how things got done for much of our history.
The Last Three Miles is not merely a story of the hopes, woes, and struggles behind the completion of a public works engineering feat that failed to live up to intended purposes. It's a story of a nation evolving from humble roots to industrial and economic supremacy, often in a ham-fisted, blundering fashion.
I'll nestle it on the bookcase between Plunkitt of Tammany Hall and The Death and Life of Great American Cities.
The Last Word on the Pulaski Skyway.......2007-06-06
There's something repulsive, yet strangely compelling, about the Pulaski Skyway, the grimy eyesore that the author aptly describes as "a uniquely efficient generator of traffic accidents." Deride it you must, but the Skyway is a fitting landmark for the squalid industrial wasteland it straddles. You'll want to buy and read this book in a hurry, before the inevitable collapse of the rusty hulk -- which even today, after some 75 years of service, plays a vital role spewing traffic in and out of New York City. It can't be too long before the monstrosity falls down, as anyone can attest who regularly drives the wretched span linking the Holland Tunnel and points west.
This well-researched little book tells the complete story of the Skyway's ill-starred design and construction. But by way of context, it necessarily tackles a much bigger story: the life and times of the notoriously corrupt Frank Hague, long-serving mayor/dictator of Jersey City, and the bloody battles waged by trade unions locked out of the Skyway project -- a forgotten, sad chapter in America's history.

I live in North Jersey, but this book is relevant to anyone interested in American history, the changes this country underwent when the automobile became commonplace, and the evolotion of modern machine politics and bossism. This exhaustively researched, yet economically written book is full of insight and fascinating information about the power struggles that ensued as American cities tried to cope with the changes wrought by the need for roads.
Frank Hague is not as widely known as other political bosses of his era, but he should be, and Mr. Hart's smooth style and astute writing bring the decades-long Jersey City mayor to life and fill in many blanks about him. Hague's controversial reign had a permanent and very tangible impact in New Jersey, New York, and, in fact, throughout the nation.

The premise of this work comes form contemporary American television and the so called "home makeovers". The results of those program efforts often leave something to be desired, as does this novel. The mystery isn't that mysterious, the characters aren't all that outrageous, and the resolution is tepid.
Better Than The Real Thing.......2005-10-24
Bloch's take on the tv show "Trading Spaces" makes is clear that he should be producing the actual program on TLC. Reading this book is more fun than a "Trading Spaces" marathon. His sly characterizations of the designers are spot on target. And the room designs, though funny and over-the-top, are no more outrageous than some of the actual designs on the show.
The murder and the mystery work well for me. I had no idea whodunnit - and it was a fun time finding out. I prefer comic mysteries that make me laugh over edge-of-the-seat mysteries - which never keep me on the edge of my seat. This one made me laugh out loud at least once in each chapter - that's a good average!
Definitely give this one a try!
Bad Design.......2005-04-23
This book is a real stinker. I finally abandoned it on page 108 (of 289) because I couldn't stand it any longer. The characters, all of them, are so over the top (Aunt Fern?) as to be annoying. The best satire has a note of realism; there is nothing, absolutely nothing, realistic in this story. The author, Jon P. Bloch, evidently teaches at the world-renowned Southern Connecticut State University. It should be back to school for you, prof.

Laugh-out-loud funny. Witty. Clever. Scathing humor. Wonderful satire of Trading Spaces (the silliest show ever) and the cast members.

Funny and charming--Terry tries to get Rick on track.......2004-06-09
Gay gossip columnist Rick Domino feels the need for a new design for his living room--but his budget is a bit short. When his boss comes up with the idea of Rick's living room being a venue for the popular do-it-yourself cable show, My House, Your House, Rick agrees--assuming he can specify the designers, his partner, and the other home to be designed. Instead, he gets a bit of a nightmare--a designer whose central idea is crochet. But at least 'Aunt Fern' doesn't believe in pulling up the hardwoods or turning a home into a prison and that's what the other designer, beautiful Helena Godiva has in mind for Rick's friend, recently out-of-the-closet police detective Terry Zane.
When Helena Godiva is found murdered and Terry's cousin, Ann-Margaret, is the chief suspect. Rick and Terry decide they need to clear Ann-Margaret's name and, with luck, get Rick some great insider gossip and Terry a conviction credit with the LAPD. Pretty clearly, the killer has something to do with the show. Even more clearly, the two men discover as they investigate, just about everyone has good reason to have killed Helena. She had slept with the women's fiances, threatened to out the gay men, exposed embarassing secrets, and generally been a hateful witch. Even Ann-Margaret has a motive despite Rick and Terry's moral certainty that she is innocent. But with such a wealth of suspects, how can they track down the actual killer?
Author Jon P. Bloch develops charming characters in the cynical Rick and the straight-arrow Terry. Rick (first person protagonist) can be critical of everyone (except himself), which can be offputting until you realize that this simply reflects his personality. Terry proves an effective foil, reminding Rick that there is more to life than empty perfection--and why not have a television in the living room anyway. Bloch's examination of the gay lifestyle in Los Angeles rings true--although the complete lack of worthwhile straight guys is a bit disconcerting.
MURDER BY DESIGN pokes fun at the nations fascination with design makeover shows and provides a charming mystery as well. Nicely done.

After a hyperactive child wanders where he shouldn't in an old castle and finds a body in a suit of armor, the Calleshire C.I.D is called in, and Inspector Sloan begins to piece together what happened to the poor librarian who was stuffed in the armor. Meanwhile, Aird shows us her humour as Sloan and Crosby interview the Earl of Ornum and his eccentric family. Soon, Sloan and Crosby discover that murder's afoot as another body is discovered. Aird certainly knows about medievil weapons as Crosby gets in a few good cracks. Good, enjoyable mystery.
