A fun, if uneven, zombie book.......2007-09-25
There's a lot of good here, and a lot of bad. There's a solid plot foundation and some excellent misdirection to keep you on your toes. However, it really needed to be edited better. There were several sections where I became more focused on wording mistakes than on the story. It's also roughly written in places. As a teacher, I wanted to grab a red pen and make corrections.
a fantastic read!.......2007-07-18
I thought this book was excellent. Not only was it about zombies, which are my all time favorite things..but it had the main characters playing in a paintball tournament (yay for paintball!!).
I also read through this book very fast. I thought the story line was good and it stayed interesting throughout the whole book, so I didn't want to stop reading, and i was never bored. The details of gore were disgusting, which makes it even more enjoyable. I enjoyed the descriptions of the characters, it made you want to either root for them, or wish they'd be eaten :)
The only bad thing about this book is that it ended and now I have to wait for the second one! 2 thumbs up!
A good first novel and an action-packed zombie tale.......2007-06-04
Gregory Solis' Rise and Walk is the kind of zombie tale many fans of the genre think of writing day in and day out but never get a chance either through lack of talent or just lack of motivation. Gregory Solis got to write his and on the surface it's a very good first novel, albeit with some flaws that keeps it from being great. He has also written a very action-packed zombie story which steps on the gas from the prologue and doesn't let up until the very end.
The story is a very simple one which many zombie genre fans have played, imagined and replayed it over and over in their minds. Instead of beginning the zombie story during the aftermath of the devastation an outbreak will cause, Solis instead goes right for the beginning. Call it the Z-Hour of the zombie genre. He writes about how it all begins and how quickly the contagion and its reanimated victims quickly multiply at a geometric rate to engulf a small, Northern California community. Unlike George Romero's films which never fully explained the cause and origin of the zombie pandemic, Rise and Walk uses space debris from a meteor storm and the contents within as the cause of the zombification and the need of its victims to attack and devour the living.
Right from the get-go the action comes in fast and comes in furious. Solis doesn't skimp on the grue and bloodletting. He describes every zombie attack on a living human with gory detail. Some may flinch at the splatterpunk style of writing, but if one was a zombie fan then this style should suit them just fine. The chaos caused by the geometrically increasing and advancing horde of zombies was well-done and something fans of the genre would recognize. People make dumb mistakes as they try to figure out what in the world is going on. Some make the right decisions and live while others do not and become zombies themselves or are just complete devoured.
Where Solis got the action and atmosphere down perfect for a zombie story, the main characters and their development could've been done better. the main leads of Rise and Walk panic just like the rest of the humans, but they seem to recover from the shock of the situation rather too quickly. As the story progresses there's really no tension or fear that the four leads (two male and two female) would come to any serious harm. Only those in the periphery of the leads seem fair game for a gruesome end (kids are not given a free pass in this book). It is this major flaw which keeps me from giving the book a higher grade and rating. Though from reading the ending Solis' attempts to build more credible and well-rounded characters may improve.
In the end, despite the flaws in how the main characters are written I will say that Rise and Walk by Gregory Solis is one good first novel from a first-time writer. It shows the writer has a modicum of talent for storytelling and he sure tells a fast-paced and mean zombie story. Fans of the genre should enjoy this book and should be waiting once they're done reading it for the sequel that is already to come.
A must-read for the horror fan!.......2007-05-16
I read this book at the suggestion of a friend, was hooked after the first paragraph and nearly finished it in one sitting. For any horror fan it is a must-read. I think you will find it a solid story and very well written for a first-time author. Yes, it has its minor flaws, but it is more of a diamond in the rough. The author creates characters who are convincing, with feelings and motivations, and who mostly break out of what could have been stereotypical molds.
More importantly, there is an especially chilling aspect of Rise and Walk as several characters are briefly developed by the author simply to become zombie food. For anyone who is turned off by this, I would say you must not be a true fan of the horror genre [to the earlier reviewer who "didn't get it": you should have finished the book!!]. What could be more terrifying than being attacked by a monster with the face of a friend or a loved one? The author uses this as a successful tool to create something beyond a horde of monsters, but instead creatures we recognize and know were once individual people. This struck a particular chord with me and made Rise and Walk an even more exciting and wonderfully chilling tale. If it had any failing, it was that it ended too soon -- I'm really looking forward to the sequel!
I don't get it.......2007-05-12
I was a little timid about buying this because of the story line (zombie outbreak at a paint ball competition)even though I am a huge zombie fan. The story started off great, but quickly turned into what appeared to be an excercise in concise character development. The author does an outstanding job of building a character right before he has them eaten. This would be fine, except after about 5 people, it gets old. You don't even want to read about another person because there's no longer suspense as to what happens. I think you need to feel for your characters and have at least a glimmer of hope that they will make it. I'll be honest, I put this down with a quarter of the book left. This is the first of the 18 zombie books I've read, that I've lost interest in.

Field of Screams.......2006-03-08
THEY'RE ALIVE!
Jodie loves coming to her grandparent's farm, but something has changed. In the wide open space of their farm, the normal scarecrows have been replaced with evil looking
scarecrows. One night Jodie sees something weird. The scarecrows are moving, twitching on their sticks. She decides something is wrong. Throughout the book she has many fears. When Jodie gets curious about things she cant explain, Jodie try's to figure it out and something always goes wrong. The things she does with other characters including her grandpa and grandma can be deadly. This book The Field Of Screams by R.L. Stine is exciting and filled with suspense. There is also a whole series of GooseBumps with the same amount of suspense. I would recommend this book to someone who can handle scary situations. BEWARE YOU'RE IN FOR A SCARE.
a scary book.......2005-09-28
goosebumps books are great books to read. It will give you goosebumps .There is a boy named mark and he thinks that a boy named sticks is one of the scarecrows and he thinks that sticks is pulling one of his tricks that he does all of the time.
This story is full of scarecrows........2005-04-08
Do you see any scarecrows "coming alive"? Goosebumps- The Scarecrow Walks At Midnight is mostly about scarecrows. R.L Stine is an author of over two dozen best selling thrillers and mysteries for young people. He also wrote these books- The Dead Girlfriend, Don't Go To Sleep, and Go Eat Worms. He always tries to write scary and mysteries books. This story happened on Mark's Grandpas farm. I think that R.L Stine is trying to say that, you don't need to be scared.
The scarecrows are walking in the fields- I think that is not true because the scarecrows can't walk and in real life the scarecrows are not real. The story is about scarecrows trying to scare Mark and Mark never gives into his fear. Would you like to be the leader of scarecrows? I really recommend this book to those who like scarecrows and scary books.

Another great read by McCammon.......2007-05-18
I was introduced to Robert McCammon by a friend who had picked up Boy's Life knowing nothing about it and who highly reccommended it. I borrowed her copy and loved it so much I went out and bought my own which is now battered and bent from re-reading. Having loved Boys Life so much (it has since been my all time favourite book) I was hesitant to read another McCammon as I didnt want to have too high an expectation. Although Mystery Walk is no Boy's Life, I was well rewarded for beginning it to read it for what it is.
Mystery Walk is the tale of Billy and Ramona Creekmore, who have the gift of communication with the dead. We follow Billy as he grows up and struggles with his gift, and he unwillingly becomes an outsider in his town and enters the wide world in search of answers. The story is fast moving with great characters and is ultimatley the fight of good vs evil. This is a well written horror/suspense novel and I think anyone who enjoys reading Stephen King will love McCammon. I am so amazed at how little known he is when he is so far above other well known authors.
Robert - if your out there please give us more! Your talents are needed!
Better Than Swan Song.......2007-03-26
I have to respectfully disagree with the near five stars the book has gotten. I give it four, because after reading the let down that was Swan Song, Mystery Walk was refreshing. It redeemed my belief in McCammon was a talented writer, rather than a imitator. Unlike the near paper standups in Swan Song, the characters in Mystery Walk were lively, imaginative, and most importantly, real, a little more 3-dimensional. Mystery Walk is not only a tale of good vs. evil, but the journey from childhood to adulthood. Learning right from wrong. All in all, it was beautifully written.
But it suffered from elements that made me scream "why Mac?! You were doing so well!" D.H., the shape changer reappears. God knows why McCammon choose to revive that useless character. D.H. should've been left in Swan Song. His purpose and being is still unexplained, and as I read, I felt like I was reading a prequel to Swan Song. This wouldn't have hurt me so much if King hadn't developed a similar continuum already. It felt like I was reading a straight rip off of the King's Randall Flagg character, who is known for reappearing in King's work. D.H. is pretty much doing the same thing. I said it once before...Flagg can drop kick D.H.!
The religious aspect of the books went no where. It is laced throughout like butter on bread, but it just ended up being stale backdrop. Neither of the main protagonists, mainly Billy Creekmore and Wayne Falconer, ever really go soul searching (despite the title). There could've been more questioning of purpose, faith, the afterlife, or their own abilities. And why was Wayne given short blurbs or three whole chapters as oppose to Billy who dominates the book with his woeful adventures? I would have preferred equal insight into both boy's development, especially since we are handed the shocking development in the third leg of the story that even I didn't see coming. We deserved to see Wayne struggle into adolescene, make friends, even struggling with his own fledging gift. We didn't get that.
At best, Mystery Walk is four stars. Very solid piece of work. McCammon holds true to his prose action and style. The part where Billy challenges a demonic saw was memorable, and I was awed by Billy at the school dance. If any scene could come close to Carrie's (King) mental breakdown at her prom, it would be Billy struggling to warn people at the school dance of their death.
I suggest you read this and completely avoid Swan Song. You can thank me later.
The battle between good and evil in small town USA.......2006-07-12
This is an exciting story that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Being a Choctaw it was great to see their hertitage as part of the story. My great grandma could move tables and each generation since has special "gifts". My daughter and I have seen ghosts in passing from this world to the next and maybe this book has more truth than you know.
More Classic McCammon..........2005-07-28
After reading Boy's Life and Swan Song I was craving more McCammon, and he delivers very solidly in this novel. A young half-breed Choctaw has inherited a strange gift from his mother - the ability to assist restless spirits -revenants- back into the grave where they belong. However, he is surrounded by ignorant and racist redneck in his southern town. They treat him and his mother with xenophobia and fear. The townsfolk are not the only ones with a grudge against young Billy Creekmore. There is a genuine religious boy-healer and his crazed father trying to scourge the land from impurities. Their paranoia towards Billy grows and grows until they decide he must be destroyed. The two magic boys have different agendas but their baths are destined to meet on their respective mystery walks. The evil shapeshifter spirit also stalks Billy, craving to kill him - just as it has stalked his ancestors.
A great tale, told with wonderful prose makes Mystery Walk a journey worth going on...

Never Boring!.......2005-06-16
The only true rival to Stephen King and what an exceptional writer he is. I enjoyed "Mystery Walk" it works on many different levels. As in all McCammon's books the many layered characters are fully fleshed out, warts and all, they leap off the page. The suspense mounts to the breaking point, an intelligent, witty, well written thriller and McCammon is one in a handful of authors that can actually scare me with words, which is very rare. Read anything by this man he delivers when others don't or can't.

This is no dream . . .
Nikki DuMonde's newest employee is standing at the end of her bed at four o'clock in the morning begging for help. It's a joke, right? Besides, as manager of a successful New Orleans haunted-tour company, Nikki doesn't scare easily. But in the light of day, harsh reality sets in as a police officer informs her that Andy was brutally murdered -- at the exact time Nikki swears the distraught woman was in her room.
No one believes her except Brent Blackhawk, a paranormal investigator desperately trying to forget his tragic past. Half Irish, half Lakota -- and able to communicate with the dead -- Brent is used to living in two worlds. But when he realizes the ghost of a slain government agent is also trying to reach out to Nikki, he knows that she, too, must listen to the dead . . . if she wants to keep living.

Customer Reviews:
Simple book for those who enjoy easy reads.......2007-06-24
This was an ok novel, I thought it would some how be deeper, and a quicker read, however it turned out to be little more then a sheet grabber. A term I use to refer to books that start out with a good idea but end up copying bad romance novels with cliched haunting stories. The writer does not try to grab the reader, instead it cuts from one scene to the next like a bad made for TV movie. I wish I could have stopped reading it, but I am one of the few who cannot stop reading a novel simply because I don't like it. If the story starts, I must know the ending, for this I pity myself. Simple book and possibly fun, for those who like the easy read, and occasionally steamy books... though not for me.
GOOD READING BUT MESSED UP PRINTING.......................2007-01-06
LOVED THIS BOOK, BUT I HAD TROUBLE IN THE LATER CHAPTERS, KEEPING IT TOGETHER! (THE ACTUAL BOOK!!!) I HAD PAGES WITHOUT PRINT, PAGES THAT FELL OUT AND ONE THAT HAD BEEN CORRECTED BY GLUING A MID-SECTION OF THE PAGE WITH A CORRECTION PIECE, FROM THE TOP OF THE PAGE TO THE BOTTOM! IT WAS FRUSTRATING AS WHEN YOU GET THAT FAR INTO A GOOD STORY, YOU DON'T WANT TO HAVE TO STOP AND FIGURE OUT PAGE PLACEMENT. {THANK GOD FOR NUMBERS ON THE PAGES:-)} I AM ON TO "THE VISION" AND HOPE IT IS AS GOOD. I REALLY LIKE IT WHEN CHARACTERS FROM A GOOD STORY ARE BROUGHT BACK IN FOLLOW UP BOOKS. I HAVE LOVED EVERY BOOK HEATHER GRAHAM HAS WRITTEN, THAT I HAVE READ. I USUALLY PASS MY READ BOOKS ALONG TO OTHERS, BUT MS GRAHAM'S HAVE MOSTLY BEEN KEEPERS.
Ghost Walk.......2006-11-06
I loved this book. It was Great. I picked up more of her books to read.
Heather Graham is a great story teller!.......2006-08-22
I purchased this book because I was interested in the paranormal aspect of the Novel. Graham did a great job of making the reader feel like the ghosts Nikki and Brent encountered were 'real'. The twists and turns to the mystery were not easy to figure out, so I was left wondering all the way to the end 'who did it'.
Very Entertaining - Great Shades!.......2006-06-02
Nikki DuMonde had a very interesting job, conducting tours focusing on the haunted and purported ghostly areas of New Orleans. Her employees were more than just colleagues; they had all become her friends and Andrea `Andy' Ciello, the newest employee quickly bonded with Nikki after discovering their similar backgrounds.
With a heightened sense of `presences' Nikki didn't scare easily, but in the harsh light of day, when confronted by the New Orleans police of Andy's death from an alleged drug overdose, Nikki knew that the visit she'd had the previous night from a distraught Andy was not physical but her spirit, pleading for help. Nikki also KNEW that it was NOT a drug overdose!
In pleading her case with the police that Andy was murdered and not dead because of an overdose, only one person seemed to believe her - Brent Blackhawk. Brent was a paranormal investigator who was used to living in two worlds. Half Irish, and half Lakota, Brent had been communicating with ghosts from a very young age. New Orleans had once been home to him, a home that he chose to forget after loving and losing his wife there. He did not want to be drawn to Nikki, but his investigation into the death of a slain government undercover agent seemed to be connected to and drawing him closer to Nikki. Brent sensed that Andy's ghost seemed to be the key to uncovering the true culprit and also in keeping Nikki alive.
*** Reading the book description and not having read very many really good ghost stories the plot and location both seemed very entertaining to me and in this I certainly was not disappointed. The two lead characters of Brent and Nikki were both likeable enough though not very deeply drawn. Frankly, the backgrounds of the ghosts Huey, Andy, and the slain government agent were much more interesting. The author seemed to throw suspicion of who was behind the murders in several different directions, which certainly kept up the suspense, and the ringleader was a complete surprise. The sexual attraction between Brent and Nikki was very well done though came in secondary to the suspense. I was both enthralled with the background of the `ghost walks' and certainly hope that New Orleans can overcome the horrific tragedy of hurricane Katrina so that I myself could visit New Orleans and go on a `haunted tour' myself. I enjoyed and found this to be an entertaining read, full of a plethora of secondary characters and some terrific ghosts. -

The Berenstain Bears Go on a Ghost Walk.......2007-09-06
I read The Berenstain Bears to my boys when they were young. We loved every book and couldn't wait for another one to come out. Now that my sons are grown and beginning to have famlies of their own, I've seen my adult children rereading these books. These are great books. Each one has a moral and they are fun to read. I would deffinately recommend these books for young children. And older ones too!
A valuable lesson about halloween .......2006-08-09
I thought the Berenstains accurately showed the fine line between blood and gore during halloween and dressing up. A real good lesson for anyone who has ever been scared during Halloween.

Customer Reviews:
Disapointing.......2003-11-25
I am a huge Phantom fan, he's the hero of my childhood, and probably the only comic book hero that has survived the transition. In fact I think he's a better hero than Batman (who by the way I adore). No gadgets, no side kicks. Just his smarts and his pistols. Also The Phantom knows how to have a family life. I remember fondly waiting each Friday afternoon for the paper so that I could get my Phantom fix.
However this treatment by Ben Raab doesn't bring back much nostalgia. It is absolutely is atrocious and does nothing for the character. The dialogue is awful and the story silly...since when did the Phantom talk like a California surfer?
I hope Moostone replaces him as a scribe. And replaces him with someone who actually understands the character.
The Phantom totally rocks........2003-06-13
Phantom fans everywhere, look out for this new graphic novel about the Phantom. Before spiderman, superman, batman, or even the justice league, there was the Phantom. He is a purple-clad protector of the jungle. This book is definitly there for anyone looking for action, adventure, or just another superhero to idolize. And if you turn out liking the Phantom, there is also a movie(starring Billy Zane, and Catherine Zeta Jones).

Believing him to be dead and grieving the loss of both her husband and baby son, Rose returned to Scotland in order to start a new life. It is June, 1897 and three years have passed since that tragic period in Rose's life. She has now fulfilled her ambition of becoming a 'Lady Investigator, Discretion Guaranteed' and is about to marry her long-term lover, Detective Inspector Jack Macmerry of the Edinburgh Police. But pre-wedding jitters become the least of her worries when a nun from the local convent claims to have received a letter from Danny. Is the elderly nun just senile, or could Danny really still be alive? In which case, why would he not write to his wife? Unnerved and determined to find out the truth before her wedding, Rose begins to investigate. However, after two suspicious deaths, all the signs suggest that a ghost is about to walk back into her life.

There is always justice that needs to be served, whether it's in the present... or the past. Nearly five centuries ago, during a daring raid at sea, pirates took the life of merchant ship captain Christopher Standish. In the heat of the pitched battle aboard the ship, Standish's son was knocked overboard to wash ashore on a remote beach where he was found by a friendly pygmy tribe. After stumbling upon the body of his father's killer, young Standish swore an oath on the murderer's skull to devote his life, and the lives of his sons and their sons, to the destruction of piracy, greed, cruelty and injustice. To the outside world, this man, seemingly immortal, has always worn the mask. As the legend grew, it transcended the life of any one mortal. And that legend became THE PHANTOM! say hello to a walking mummy!.......2005-07-02
Ok, this book was certainly hard for me when I read it(9 year old). I read it again like 3 month ago(13 year old), and I understood what it meant. This book is for 10+, but it was difinitely superior story. The ending was kinda difficult to understand, but that's ok.
I give a 5 star to this book.
To people who don't like Goosebumps because its not scary. What do you expect? It's for 7 - 12 year old kids, meaning not very frightening but a mysterious ending. Goosebumps is a mystery book in a sort way, because every time you read goosebumps series, you wonder how the storyline is going to be connected to the ending. I started to read goosebumps at the age of 8, and never once did I thought goosebumps was scary. (I read almost every book of the Original Goosebumps Series). But I still love goosebumps, and R.L.Stine is the authour that made me wanting to be an authour. So the bottom line is, don't read goosebumps if you want chill on your back. If you want a chill, I'd say watch the movie "The Grudge". LOL!
HELLL YAA!!!!!!!!.......2001-07-21
THIS BOOK IS THE BEST BECAUSE ITS FUNNY WHEN THE PARENTS SAID THAT THERE NOT HIS PARENTS I STARTED CRACKING UP I WANTED 2 READ MORE AND I TOLD ALL MY FRIENDS 2 READ IT! I LIKE RL STINES BOOK BECAUSE ITS SCARY. IF U LIKED THIS BOOK I RECOMEND U 2 READ THE BRIDE OF THE LIVIVNG DUMMY AND THATS IT ROCK ON!
Is that your daughty?.......1999-05-05
This book is pretty good. I just thought the mummy was real. It was just General Rameer's daughter. Since R.L. Stine made "Scream School" the things have either been jokes or something that isn't real. How about The Werewolf In The Living Room not be a joke?
