If you like mysterious vampires known as the Dark Ones, castles filled with treasure unlike any you can ever imagine, a heroine more content to translate obscure languages than work charms, and a supporting cast of imps, betrayers, and immortals, then SEX, LIES, AND VAMPIRES is definitely the book for you.
Nell Harris is the type of woman who delights in the old-namely, in ancient artifacts. A junior professor of medieval history in Seattle, she's been lured to the Czech Republic by Melissande Banacek to view the Holy Grail of her profession-the Graven Plate, a breastplate from a suit of armor made in the late 1300's at the castle of Churburg. A legend among medievalists, no one has ever laid eyes upon the interlocking plates that detail the history of a knight-errant. For Nell, this is the opportunity of a lifetime. Unfortunately, upon her arrival at the home of Ms. Banacek, she gets a little more than she bargained for.
Nell is not one to believe in paranormal beings or things that go bump in the night. So, when she spots a common Central European Imp in Melissande's living room, she's a little unnerved. When Melissande goes on to inform Nell that she's a Dark One, a Moravian vampire, Nell decides that the lady must be insane. Next, this strange lady goes on to tell her that Nell herself is a Charmer. A demon lord by the name of Asmodeus has taken Melissande's brother and nephew hostage, and a fellow vampire by the name of Adrian, whose also known as The Betrayer, is responsible for it all. Bound to Asmodeus by a curse, Melissande's brother and nephew cannot escape. Hence the need for Nell, who as a Charmer has the power and ability to charm the curse.
All would be easy if not for the fact that Nell has forgotten that ten years ago she actually believed in charms, curses, and her abilities. After a charm gone wrong killed her best friend, Nell buried herself in the past-and tangible evidence. Now she's been tricked into helping a boy who can only survive with her help-and in return, she'll have sole possession of the Graven Plate.
Greed and the desire for tenure may be the motivating factors at the start of her journey, but joining forces with Adrian, who isn't what she first thought him to be, is what keeps her going. There's more at stake than the release of a vampire and his son, and it's up to Nell and Adrian to combine their powers to rescue a society on the verge of collapse.
SEX, LIES, AND VAMPIRES is full of fun characters, quirky dialogue, and the redeeming power of love. This isn't the first book I've read by Ms. MacAlister featuring the Dark Ones, and it most certainly won't be my last. I love Ms. MacAlister's world of vampires and supernatural beings, and once you pick up one of her books, I'm sure you'll feel the same.
Great fun .......2007-04-15
Impossible to put the book down. Instantly appealing and engaging story, revealing yet tasteful and seductive. Creative and catchy ^-^ Absolutly love it !!!
Tired story, but cool Mummies!.......2006-09-06
Katie Macalister has a ton of fans, so I'm thinking that maybe this book just wasn't for me. I'm a fan of the Anita Blake series, Mary Janice Davidson and Michelle Rowan so I though, hey let's give Sex Lies and Vampires a try.
I finished the whole book, but I couldn't get into it. There were some really great parts-- Mummies etc. Macalister can be terribly funny. The problem lies in the repitition and the dialouge. The characters seem empty and the story tended to repeat itself a lot. They spent a LOT of time traveling from one place to the next. Every couple chapters there was a "on the train" scene. AUGH!
Anyway, a gagillion fans can't be wrong-- Macalister is doing something right, and there is no denying she's a gifted writer... the story just wasn't for me.
fun, wacky, naughty but a little bit underdone.......2006-07-05
As always Katie Macalister never fails to make me laugh. I hope she'll never lose her sense of humor which I always love about her writing style. I had a good laugh reading this book! The problem I have about this book is she did not describe more about Nell Harris. I know she has left sided hemiplegia, a charmer in denial, boobsy and tall, but then what? I do like Adrian though, alot! Nell and Adrian are suited for each other forever! There nothing more romantic than saving the one you love from eternal damnation! But I really hate his son Damian, what an ungrateful brat! Im looking forward to read about Sebastian. I wonder what his story is, hope Nell and Adrian will make an appearance in Just One Sip. Wish Katie will describe more in detail about her main characters and more about the world of the Dark Ones.
I Can't Help Loving the Dark Ones!.......2006-04-03
Katie Mac is one of my favorite authors & I can't help loving this book!
Nell is employed by Mellisande, Christian Dante's cousin ( he's our main reaccurring character in the 3 books of the series), to act as a Charmer & save Mellisande's nephew. Not told this when she was flown to the Czhech Republic, Nell refuses. She hasn't reversed a curse since a fatal college accident that left her with a stroke 10 years ago.
When Nell is persuaded to look around Christian's castle she runs into Adrian, a.k.a. THE BETRAYER. She's the only one in nearly 5 centuries who doesn't fear him though & Adrian quickly realizes she is the Beloved who can save his soul. He didn't believe she existed. Now Nell helps him to save Mellisandes nephew, (shocker>>>!! Adrian's son!!!) & destroy the baddy in a most abrupt fashion, so that they can share eternity together. Throw in a few mummies cheerfully folling Nell like puppies, cameo's by one of you favorite ghosts from a previouse book, & a few well loved reaccurring characters ( & one that goes bad!) & you get a great novel that will be hard to put down!

Book Description
"A mystery tinged by the politics of today...Brutally realistic." --U.S. News & World Report
Dan Fesperman, a journalist who reported from a number of war zones, has written a masterful murder mystery in the vein of early le Carré and Graham Greene.
Vlado Petric is a homicide investigator in war-torn Sarajevo. When he encounters an unidentified body near "sniper alley," he realizes that it is the body of Esmir Vitas, chief of the Interior Ministry's special police, and that Vitas has been killed not by any sniper's aim but by a bullet fired at almost pointblank range. Searching for the killer in this "city of murderers," Petric finds himself drawn into a conspriacy, the scope of which goes beyond anything he could possibly have imagined.
Customer Reviews:
Murder in wartorn Sarajevo.......2007-07-22
Sarajevo homicide investigator Vlado Petric finds his work almost as boring as his solitary life in Fesperman's debut. The siege of war has hammered the murder rate and the new special police grab any interesting cases. But the murder of the chief of the Interior Ministry's special police changes everything. The Ministry, making lofty noises about independent investigation, assigns the case to Petric.
Journalist Fesperman explores the underbelly of grim, wartorn Sarajevo - the daily privations and small defeats, like trading with foreign journalists for a jar of instant coffee, or the pang of resentment and contempt when the same journalist speaks casually of leaving. He lays out the mechanics of profit for the gangsters, black-marketers, government opportunists and schemers for whom war is a bounty.
Petric, whose morning routine begins with counting the gravediggers across the street ("his daily census of the war") never quite overcomes the irony of investigating one man's intriguing murder while other corpses pile up. But as the scraps of evidence draw him into danger, the murder becomes his obsession.
Fesperman's Sarajevo is rendered with powerful delicacy, insight and detail. The reader feels Petric's trapped longings for his wife, his old life, a normal day. People get by, a testament to human adaptability, but some - too many - feed greedily on the hardships of others. Fesperman brings all this to bear without making his story depressing or robbing it of suspense. The climax is a riveting, explosive page-turner.
This remains the most powerful of Fesperman's books - though all are incisive, thoughtful, suspenseful and highly recommended.
AMAZING BOOK!!!.......2005-04-07
This action packed thriller is full of suspense and mystery!!
I loved it!!
Stunning book - probably great in the absolute sense.......2005-01-07
THere is not much that I can add to what other reviewers have said except for a personal endorsement. I read a great deal of fiction and non-fiction and long ago gave up buying any books but the exceptional ones. I am very critical and often discard books before I finish reading them.
I read this book and immediately bought my own copy. I also bought his other two as they came out - even before a test read.
It is a book I have reread twice - and loved it each time. An absolute winner.
Strong debut in Le Carre field.......2000-09-03
To the friends of Vlado Petric, his job as homicide detective in Sarajevo during the recent civil war was that "of a plumber fixing leaky toilets in the middle of a flood, an auto mechanic patching tires while the engine burned to a cinder." Wait until the end of the war, they said. All the suspects will be dead by then. Vlado would agree with them, but in his inner mind he knew differently. His job was his last link to the life he knew before the war, before his wife and young daughter became refugees living illegally in Berlin. For now, he moves through the long days, marking the shifting tide of the war by counting the graves being dug in the soccer field below his apartment window and tackling the occasional murder that was not caused by a sniper.
Petric's assignment to investigate the death of a high police official is meant as proof to the local U.N. officials that the city is still functioning. The well-marked trail -- that the official was on the take and was killed when he demanded too much money -- was meant to lead to a quick report and possibly the arrest of some unfortunate. But they didn't reckon on Sarajevo's last honest detective. Petric's investigation leads him deep into the black market economy where cigarettes function as currency, gasoline is sold in glass liter bottles and where men are not above putting the hurt on police officers asking too many questions.
"Lie in the Dark" is a strong mystery debut by Baltimore Sun journalist Dan Fesperman that rediscovers the morally shaky worlds of Graham Greene and John le Carre on the bomb-shattered streets of Sarajevo. Fesperman covered the war and writes about life in Sarajevo with the confidence and knowledge of a native. But he does more than report on what he saw. "Lie" is a beautifully written, sad elegy to a city in agony, and Petric emerges from the pages as a whole man, with his strong curiosity, an aching need for his family, and imbued with the very real fear that one misstep, either on Sniper Alley or while questioning a witness, could lead to an unmarked grave on a soccer field.
Brilliant Entry in the Detective in War subgenre.......2000-05-11
A brilliant entry in the "Detective at work while war rages around him" subgenre, this book takes place in war-torn Sarajevo of the mid-1990s. Investigator Petric has managed to avoid being drafted into the Bosnian army due to his job as a police detective. However, since the war started, he's had few interesting cases, as a branch of the interior ministry has expropriated much of his domain. When he is handed a highly sensitive case, all clues lead to an easy conclusion, one that he suspects he is supposed to deliver. As his inquires progresses, the haunting nature of daily life in a city under siege is brought into sharp relief, as is the power of the various gangs controlling commerce, and the corruption of what nominal authorities there are--including the U.N. Fesperman manages to convey a sense of the multiethnic complexities of the city and conflict without becoming too preachy (although an exchange 267-268 comes across as a stilted high-school debate, rather than an actual conversation), as well as the personal depression of individuals. While at times Inspector Petric seems awfully naive and forthcoming in his information, and the ending relies on a somewhat unlikely trick, this is a very satisfying crime novel in a unique setting. Another book with the same setting and premise--somewhat less skillfully executed--is John Fullerton's "The Monkey House."

For the first time in print, here are true stories of outrageous rip-offs, slick scams, and assorted chicanery eBay doesn't want you to know about. Think you won't get bamboozled? Read this book and think again!
Customer Reviews:
Dawn of a FUNNY BOOK!.......2007-02-16
I really enjoyed this laugh out loud book! The stories were engaging, at times funny and at times I cringed for the poor souls who were duped. The Klink brothers show creativity in tackling what no one else has, the "dark side" of eBay. I highly recommend this book, it's a fun read!
Five Stars!.......2006-08-01
This collection of colorful vignettes provides for an entertaining and informative read. Readers find themselves captivated by the stories, as they empathize with the eBay victims and question whether they too could have been duped. Dawn of the eBay Deadbeats is a fantastic book that spurs reflection of eBay purchasing practices and provides for interesting conversations.
Judge "Dawn...." for yourself!.......2006-07-19
"Dawn of the eBay Deadbeats" is a very fun, quick, whitty, summer read. It's akin to a modern cyber fairy tale with a lesson to be learned from other's experiences. This book empowers the hardworking man. Since eBay makes it very difficult to recoup ones money this book acts as a soap box for those who have been wronged a voice. This is a book for both the internet novice and the internet savvy alike. The brother's Klink have created a book inwhich the average man can help make a difference based upon their own experiences.
I enjoyed it very much.
Great book!.......2006-07-17
Excellent stories. Especially liked the story about buying a Jeep. Can't believe how many frauds are out there. Gives good insight on how you might be scammed on ebay.
Incredibly truthful book.......2006-07-17
Ebay is a great place but it was much better in its infancy when there were less scammers. As its grown so has its problems. Scammers have infiltrated its system and are now impossible to root out mostly because Ebay denies it has a problem, Just like your common "JUNKIE" the more you deny the bigger the problem grows.
This book is a must read because the stories are straight from the people who have been scammed. Without such a book stories like these could never be heard because the Ebay giant silences all who speak out. ....

Book Description
Dark Secrets; White Lies is a riveting thriller that combines a turbulent romance between two head strong individuals and the very real threat of a maniacal stalker. All acted out in an aging mansion possessed by specters from its dark past, a mansion that seems to have a mind and soul of its own.
Victoria Richards is the sole occupant of Hill House--a mansion located in an isolated area--who constantly complains of the presence of a stalker who is threatening to kill her. Her niece, Callie Rose Porter, fears for her aunt's sanity until she visits the House and discovers two mutilated corpses and her aunt missing. Aided by Tony Reyes, an ex-detective from the N.Y.P.D., a man with a dark, mysterious past, Callie must find her missing aunt and discover the identity of the stalker before becoming a victim herself. As the body count mounts, Callie perseveres, while holding onto secrets she harbors regarding her own past, and the many relatives who perished in Hill House against their will...
Author's Note: In the novel, Hill House is often referred to as the House, capitalized as though it were a living, breathing entity. Then again, it would seem so at times...
Customer Reviews:
Chills and thrills!.......2004-04-16
A haunted house in the woods, a cold-blooded killer, and two head-strong protagonists with dark, mysterious pasts are the main elements in this action-filled, heart-racing thriller that will keep you glued to your seat until you have finished it.
When Victoria Richards, who has been claiming for several weeks that there's a stalker threatening to kill her, suddenly disappears, her niece Callie Rose Porter goes to Hill House to try to find her.
Not an easy task, not by a long shot, for Hill House is no ordinary house. Located in a desolated area deep in the woods, haunted with the restless souls of the dead, and filled with secret passages and evil memories, this mansion is the perfect hideout for the mad killer who, one by one, is murdering innocent victims. Tony Reyes, an ex-cop from the N.Y.P.D, decides to help Callie. As tension and danger escalate, so does their steamy, passionate relationship.
There are many suspects. But who, in reality, is the killer? Is there a connection between the killer and Callie's terrible past? Or maybe with the nearby asylum and its psychotic patients?
This book will keep you turning those pages non-stop. It has just the right amount of romance, mystery, chills and thrills to satisfy any demanding reader. Dana Reed has just joined my list of favorite authors. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Light at the end of the tunnel.......2007-01-02
I've been an avid fan of Battletech since I was in the second grade back in 1988. I've read nearly every Battletech novel and was heartbroken when I learned it was coming to an end. Then, lo and behold, Wizkids managed to breath life into that universe again and I made my way to the bookstore and dove into Stackpole's "Ghost War," which left me fairly pleased. Well, several books later, especially after Martin Delrio butchered the Inner Sphere, I forced my way through Coleman's "By Temptations and By War," after which I put away the last two Mechwarrior books I had purchased ("Fortress of Lies" and "Patriot's Stand") unread. Three years and several dozen NON-mechwarrior novels later, I got the bug and decided to give Mechwarrior: Dark Age another shot - and I'm glad I did. This book, although not GREAT, was good and showed that it doesn't necessarily take heavy hitters like Colemand and Bills to write a decent novel in this universe. The action was there, as well as all the back-stabbing political mayhem that I always look forward too. This book does leave quite a few questions unanswered, but it is well written and (I thought it) was fun to read. I've since started going back to collect the books I missed in the mean time. I'm currently half-way through "Patriot's Stand", which, I'm sorry to say, is another piece of... well, you know. Either way, a new Stackpole Mechwarrior novel is on the way this April and I'm trying to play catch-up so I can be up to speed in time for its release.
Wonderful.......2005-07-27
This is a terrific book, one of the best from the MW line. York has a way of making you truly enjoy the characters, even if you hate them. I truly hope we see more from him in the MW universe.
A thrilling tale of political intrigue and deception.......2004-12-12
Those still unhappy with the changes the Mechwarrior: Dark Age sagas have wrought to the original Battletech universe cannot help but warm up to the new series with efforts such as this one by J. Steven York, the eighth novel in the new series. Fortress of Lies is not heavy with actual Mechwarrior combat, but its plethora of political intrigue offers further illumination on the weakening of the Republic. It also boasts some compelling, complex characters in the form of two different generations of the legendary Sandoval family line (as well as a somewhat stereotypical but very entertainingly independent ship's captain).
The destruction of the Hyper Pulse Generator has seen the Republic start to fracture; with instant communication among the worlds no longer possible, ambitious men exploit the situation to make power-plays of their own. Duke Aaron Sandoval, Lord Governor of Prefecture V, is one such man. The insurgency of the House Liao faction of the Capellans has provided the Duke with the opportunity to build a coalition of his own, as he has been hard at work promising neighboring worlds the stability the Republic is no longer able to guarantee. Due in no small part to the heroics of his nephew Erik Sandoval, the Duke has achieved an important victory on the world of New Aragon. He needs allies and, more importantly, the war materiel they would bring to his coalition in order to further his plans, however. Only then will he feel emboldened enough to declare his loyalty to the House of Davion rather than the weakening Republic. Erik is to play a key role in the Duke's strategy,
After the abrupt end of unsuccessful negotiations with the leaders of New Canton, the Duke's plans are almost waylaid permanently by the work of an assassin, but Duke Aaron Sandoval is a survivor in the best Swordsworn tradition. If anything, the brush with death inspires Aaron to accelerate his plans. He sends his nephew Erik to Shensi to secure an alliance with a reluctant but militarily strong potential ally; it's a tough deal to sell, as the Shensi seem likely to seek peace with House Liao. Aaron has a few cards up his sleeve, however, including a staged attack by the "Capellans" in the midst of Erik's negotiations. Erik, like the Shensi, believes the Capellans are attacking, and he is none too happy to find out later that his uncle sent him into grave danger without informing him of the attackers' true identity. This incident of deception on his uncle's part marks a turning point in Erik's life, as the seeds of mistrust for his uncle begin to sprout solid roots. His eventual self-interested move must wait for a later day, however, as the Swordsworn suddenly face the prospect of a back-breaking defeat on another pivotal world.
Mechwarrior fans will most likely wish for longer and more detailed Mechwarrior battles, as the one extended fight seems to end a little too abruptly. Somewhat offsetting this deficiency, though, is the added insight one gets into the state of the Republic in the new interplanetary communications dark age. It is hard to overstate the significance of Duke Standoval's formal rejection of the Republic and public statement of loyalty to House Davion. Fortress of Lies sheds much light on the state of growing factionalism that is quickly replacing the peace achieved under the central leadership of the Republic.
York's first Mechwarrior novel is an absorbing read full of fascinating, well-developed characters. On the surface, it would seem that Erik is the noble character wronged by the evil Duke, but I actually liked and respected the Duke more than I did Erik. I had particularly ambiguous feelings toward Erik's new mindset at the end of the book, as his actions fell slightly short of noble. Still, he is a Sandoval, and he is beginning to live up to his heritage. It is obvious that there is quite a story left to be told about the future of the Swordsworn, and I personally hope that J. Steven York is the writer chosen to tell it.
Could there be hope?.......2004-06-24
I must say that this was one of the best MW:DA books yet. The story was interesting and informative, and the characters contained much more depth than found in many Dark Age novels. One problem I had was that some of the characters' personalities, i.e. Erik, seemed inconsistant with previous writtings, but this seems to be one of the trends with the Dark Age books.
Although some of this book was predictable, it was still quite enjoyable to read.
one of the better dark age novels.......2004-06-07
Well written, Doesnt further the dark age saga much but introduces the main faces behind the davion loyalist splinter group, swordsworn. York gave the book a good suprise but not overly corny ending.

After reading and enjoying the first book in this series, I immediately grabbed the second book and read it. It was very exciting and I read it in one sitting. The suspence made this book impossible to put down and I can't wait to read the other books by M. C. Sumner.
Read this, do yourself a favor.......2000-09-04
I actually read this book before book one, it's possibly the best written book I've ever seen. And I read a lot of books, in fact I have the Rainmaker with me right now. This book is captivating, I feel like I'm in the action, I don't see why it didn't become more popular... I blame marketting, but... what can you do?
A real page-turner! Thriller to the max!.......1997-04-17
This was a great book. If you read this series "Extreme Zone" you'll get hooked! After reading it, I had to know what was to become of Harley and Noah. Would they ever make it out alive? The suspense, the drama, it was all wonderful. I read it in one sitting! Couldn't wait to find out what happened! Also read #3 and #4...can't wait for #5. Very well written and lots of details. I can just see myself as Harley and be in her situation! Its great! - Meliss

Book Description
Many books attempt to teach us how to live this life in love, peace and harmony. However, few thoroughly explain why we encounter outer obstacles and inner conflict. White Lies Dark Truth explains in detail how every person creates a belief system, starting at birth, based upon the influence of others. The ideas and concepts that we accept become belief structures ingrained in our consciousness. There are over six billion people on Earth, and all of them go through life believing as they do because of what they have been told. Each person measures their success and happiness according to someone else's ideas, including those of their parents, their peers, the media, government, politics, and religion- just to name a few.
White Lies Dark Truth shows us that our conflicts spring from attempting to take newly discovered truths and fit them into an old belief structure that is made up of repetitions of half-truths, untruths, dogma, and illusions that have been passed down through the ages. The journey of discovery is one of personal transformation and conflicts can be resolved by exchanging truth for the white lies we have been taught. Our view of reality must change, if we are to survive. Based on author's 23 years of research, study, and practice in both Eastern and Western philosophy White Lies Dark Truth: -Focuses on the physical and psychological impediments to happiness, success, peace, love, and spiritual growth; -Challenges the reader to examine their present belief structure;
-Guides readers through the self-discovery process;
-Helps readers assess where they are now and pinpoint areas in their lives that require change or further development;
-Suggests alternatives to traditional concepts, ideas and thinking.
Beginning with present awareness, White Lies Dark Truth embarks readers on a journey within. Imagine you are traveling to New York and there are many different routes to get there. The route you take depends upon the point where your journey begins. If you are not aware of where you are, there is a good chance you will choose the wrong route, become lost and frustrated, and have to start all over again.
Many topics are covered, including: thought and the mind, the power of the spoken word, love and relationships, marriage, sex, children, food, health and healing, money and politics, spirituality, the Guru or Master, death, and religion as the root cause of racism. Written in an informal manner, White Lies Dark Truth discusses personal and social topics that society as a whole considers taboo. Techniques and exercises given at the end of each chapter will help readers reprogram their minds and even question their own existence. White Lies Dark Truth offers a cleansing for the mind, body, and consciousness. It will help the reader find an abundant source of knowledge and wisdom within their consciousness. This will bring in more awareness, which is the key that opens the secret door to the mysteries of the universe. White Lies Dark Truth is not a spiritual candy for the holistic mind. It carries the required wisdom that can direct the course of humanity towards a higher state of consciousness bringing in love, peace and harmony on our planet.
