Using the unlikely backdrop of Northern Africa, Melody Beattie (author of Co-Dependent No More) blends the genres of travel adventure and spiritual quest. Traveling mishaps such as being led unknowingly into the souk of Cairo (rumored to be a clandestine marketplace of no return), become metaphors for learning how to let go of fear while still honoring your instincts. Interrogations at border crossings symbolize the self-examination we must endure before crossing over to a new stage of enlightenment. Fortunately, this is not a U.S.-centric travelogue. In war-ravaged Algiers, Beattie diligently pursues the truth of its people rather than her own reactions to poverty and terrorism. Despite its pop-psychology title, this is a book of impressive depth, exploring the global challenge of loving thy neighbor as well as thy self.

5 out of 5 stars To all of YOU who have written a review for this book.......2005-06-01

I am writing to all of you who have written a review about this book, and especially to Melody Beattie. To the person who mocked about Melody's inner civil war, or you're already a god or you will never ever hope to KNOW what an inner civil war is. And to the rest of you, this book is not about traveling through Nothern Africa, it is about INNER travel, if you were trying to read an action-packed James Bond or Indiana Jones story, you guys picked the wrong book. This is not a fiction book, it is a book about how to find your inner deamons, your fears, face them and come through truly successfuly. This is a "self-help" book, and should be rated accordingly. I lived an inner civil war myself, and Melody greatly helped in making me understand how everything lies in subtleness, awareness, in trusting the universe. In trusting yourself, in listening to yourself for once! Hence the name of the book. This certainly was one of the pivotal steps in helping me change my life. This book is for people WHO needs it, otherwise you'd be bored to hell, of course. Every kind of book, song, movie, painting, etc... has a porpuse and is meant for certain kind of people. Just stop for a moment and THINK before you rate a book...before you rate anything. It is NOT about "if I liked it or not", it is about "does it work?" This book is not a novel, it is a tool for those who need it. It didn't work for you because you didn't need it. I needed it, and guess what, it worked. It really did. THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH MELODY, YOU REALLY HELPED SOMEONE BE MORE CONSCIOUS, MORE AWARE AND A BETTER PERSON. I ONLY WISH I COULD CONTACT YOU TO TELL YOU THIS PERSONALLY. GOD BLESS YOU, AND YOUR DAUGHTER. -Rafael Romo, Mexico City.

4 out of 5 stars Simple but enlightening.......2003-01-06

The title of this enlightening read caught my eye, for the very fact that many of us, at some time, treat ourselves worse than do others. In Stop Being Mean to Yourself, Melody Beattie finds a unique way towards unraveling the reasons why this may be so. Beattie reaches the reader at the level of the solar plexus - an area of the body to which she refers several times as she recounts her 1996 journey through Algeria, Morocco and Egypt. While one may never see Giza's pyramids, Melody's "leap of faith" in that exotic locale helps the reader to vicariously experience her inner transformation, which is really what this book is about.

Cairo and Giza are areas of the world wherein the 'ancient' rubs shoulders with the 'modern'. While being guided through the marketplace called the "souk", Melody observes a man using a stick to hit (thus identifying for the benefit of those in his vicinity) any thieves or "bad guys" among the crowd. It occurs to her at that moment that she has been "walking without a stick" all these years - she has never been able to protect herself from those who would do her harm, much less identify them. This revelation displays a yearning for intuition that could have protected her earlier in life and now comes too late to do so.

Symbolism permeates her tale. There are references to living in a psychological "box" and being tossed about as in a "vortex" - she makes good use of these images in describing some very disturbing episodes. What emerges, in the end, is Melody's realization that her pain-filled life has had a greater purpose after all - in her new awareness, she can now help others in their quest for meaning and fulfillment.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money.......2002-08-20

I am seldom pushed to write a book review, especially a negative review, but this book has compelled me to write one.

I haven't read any other books by Ms. Beattie, but I doubt that I will. This book was empty, shallow, and very disappointing. Her trip to the Middle East was barely a trip, rather a few layovers, hardly enough to feel at one with the people or the land and cultures. She overnighted in Paris, spent a day in Casablanca, where she got scared at the marketplace, then bailed out in Algeria when a blackout interrupted her hot bath. One doesn't get a sense of how long she was in Cairo, but it wasn't long before her good night's sleep was interrupted by pounding in her hotel. Back to the U.S. to write this uninspiring book.

Don't waste your money.

2 out of 5 stars Stop being a rich whiny woman!.......2002-04-17

This is a mediocre travelogue at best. Too often the author comes across as another rich spoiled american abroad. The narration is inherently funny as she often mispronounces common words. I didn't feel a lot of sympathy for her as she comes across as way too flighty and too new agey. I would not recommend this too highly.

4 out of 5 stars An inner and outer travel diary.......2002-02-12

It is often difficult to internalize the concepts discovered by others in their search for enlightenment. Although there were (often creepy) parallels between her experiences in North Africa and my own, as well as similarities in the lessons we have learned, I often found it hard to resonate with Ms Beattie as she told her story. I do appreciate her analogy of spiritual growth to that of a computer game...we just keep going to higher levels.
Although I will probably never re-read this book, I will keep it in my office for my clients to borrow. Perhaps it will strike a chord with someone.

"Extraordinary...If you take up no other novel this year, or next, this one will suffice to hold, to disturb, to enlighten and to inspire you."
NEWSDAY
Early in this century, rivers of oil were found beneath Oklahoma land belonging to Indian people, and beautiful Grace Banket became the richest person in the Territory. But she was murdered by the greed of white men, and the Graycloud family, who cared for her daughter, began dying mysteriously. Letters sent to Washington, D.C. begging for help went unanswered, until at last a Native American government official, Stace Red Hawk, traveled west to investigate. What he found has been documented by history: rampant fraud, intimidation, and murder. But he also found something truly extraordinary--his deepest self and abiding love for his people, and their brave past.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent historical novel........2004-11-18

I knew the history of this novel was accurate after I'd read it. Members of the Osage tribe were known for having oil monies. During the time of this book, many of them were defrauded or killed for their wealth.

My Dad grew up close to the scene of this book. After he'd read it, he said that it was quite accurate in its portrayal of what went on in those days.

3 out of 5 stars Important and Well-Written..........2004-04-20

...though I didn't necessarily enjoy the book as much as I anticipated. Perhaps it was the enormous catalog of characters that were introduced. While none of the characters seemed gratuitous (they all seemed to figure in by the end), I had a hard time following them throughout the story. In any event, I'm happy to have read such a tragic and thoughtful novel.

5 out of 5 stars Engrossing.......2001-02-15

"Mean Spirit" is a fictionalized, but very vivid portrayal of the hardships faced by Native Americans in the former "Indian Country" (Oklahoma) during the 1920s. Most of the main characters are members of the Osage people, who were and to some extent still are better off than many other native peoples because the land alloted to them in Oklahoma sits atop a pool of oil and they retained the mineral rights. However, as Hogan points out, this material wealth was a very mixed blessing in many ways. First and foremost, the Osage became the objects of the manipulations and schemes of various oil barons and others (very likely with the tacit support of the local and even federal authorities) often with fatal consequences - and this is the main theme of the book. Although written in the engrossing style of a thriller, "Mean Spirit" is not a whodunnit novel. It is rather an exploration of the consequences of the U.S. government's policies consistently (either directly or indirectly) aimed against the interests of Native Americans, aided and abetted by society in general. It also shows that even after active fighting and expulsion ended, the war against the Native Americans continued by other means. These messages are skillfully incorporated in a very believable and realistic story (indeed, many characters and situations are based on actual people and events), which is frequently interspersed with some refreshing, very dry humor. "Mean Spirit" is a fantastic novel and a great work of contemporary fiction.

4 out of 5 stars Mean Spirit.......2000-06-08

Mean Spirit is a wonderful work showing the Indian's view on life and nature. The novel, based on true story, really touch me and makes me feel for the Indians. The Indian seems unlikely to win the 'confrontation' against the white government. It gives my sympathy for the white man and the U.S government for they were (are?)not ashame in annexing the land of the native people of American since the early colonialization. It just too bad that the story does not end in a happy ending on the Indian side.

Product Description

What if all those seemingly insignificant little what a coincidence! moments you’ve experienced were actually hinting at something very personal and important about yourself, and about the workings of human consciousness as a whole? Would you listen? Sue Watkins does. For more than thirty-five years, Susan M. Watkins, a former small-town newspaper reporter and the author of five books, has logged coincidences as they’ve occurred in her life. What she’s discovered is that single, seemingly inconsequential coincidences—an old friend calling at the exact moment she pops into your head, for example—are often pieces of larger, more complex and meaningful coincidence clusters that together create rich and revealing stories. In What a Coincidence! Watkins presents coincidence clusters that are truly astounding and, along the way, explores those two important questions: What do our personal coincidence clusters reveal to us about ourselves and our lives? And what do they reveal about human consciousness at large? The conclusions she draws are utterly life altering. You will never brush off those what a coincidence! moments again.

I never write reviews. What a coincidence the first book I write about is titled What a Coincidence!

5 out of 5 stars I was just thinking of..........2006-10-20

I can highly recommend Susan's book on the theme of coincidence. I was just thinking of how it provides a really excellent introduction into the field of trance, hypnosis and NLP as they especially deal with the communicative energy/behavioural patterns that roam our subconscious and structure our waking life without our acknowledgement.

There is really no such thing as a coincidence in the sense of a pure accident. Rather, each event coincides because all events convene at a certain point of greatest opportunity. The NOW moment.

Becoming aware of and using the additional capacity in your own mind, and that it takes in everything around you, even though your waking consciousness is busy focusing on small details, is the point of co-incidents. That comes clearly across in this book.

Considering also there is no time in the accepted sense, simply stores of patterns which we combine or divide in the now and that we are each human electromagnetic transmitters/receptors who ceaselessly communicate with others on the same bandwidth, it should not be astounding that we can pick up on events which we project into (what we describe as) a future with strong intention.

Thus the intent of A to call B can be felt by B before or at the same as the action is being carried out, as the thought is instantaneously transmitted. Maybe in future we can do without the phone and simply learn just to transmit by thought - we are doing it already.

Dogs and cats often wait for their owner from the moment they pick up the thought of the master 'coming home' (several experiments to verify this phenomenon have been successfully carried out). Coincidence is really based on a transmission of intent to a tuned-in receptor accepting or rejecting the information (combining or dividing). There are so many other examples of attraction and repulsion of information, which, based on our basic behavioural value patterns intice us to co-create the moment or event we then call a coincidence or accident. In that sense we do not react to events, but we co-create in advance, and mould, the events we then reflect on as our reaction.

To that extent none of us can ever claim to really be a victim. We simply ould not be involved in any action, had we not on some level consented to be there and then. Synchronicity is the one place we all live in. Susan's book wonderfully expands on these themes and gives the reader assistance in exploring the vast realm of the mind and its workings.

I can also heartily recommend this book as an inspiration to students of clinical hypnosis and to NLP practitioners for pattern awareness and timeline work because it enhances one's own peripheral views of effect and affect in action.

5 out of 5 stars If you read it, you will like it.......2006-05-04

For someone who reads murder mysteries almost exclusively, I loved this book. One of the things which drew me in was Sue Watkins' intimate, cozy style of writing. I'm new to the subject, but that was not a problem at all. A fascinating and enjoyable book, full of life's little mysteries.

3 out of 5 stars One Woman's Take On Synchronicity.......2005-11-15

"That's the thing about coincidence that is so intriguing, and a little infuriating: it always seems to be *about* something, though what that something might be is often fleeting, whisked by in a blink of the inner eye." - From the book

Synchronicity is a term invented by Swiss psychologist Carl Jung to describe meaningful coincidences. In the book What a Coincidence!, author Susan Watkins offers personal anecdotes about "coincidence clusters" and how they have the uncanny ability to reach into the past, present and even the future. Painstakingly recording her dreams and waking coincidences for over 37 years, she notes that some of these clusters can seem small and insignificant while others are so mind-bendingly complex that it verges into infinity-if not absurdity.

Watkins asks some intriguing questions about coincidences:

* What if the mind is sorting through far more than what we think of as daily life?
* What if the mind has an infinite reach, encompassing everything that is possible and probable in a constant, dazzling organizational display from which we pick and choose the shape of our experience?
* What if the workings of that display show itself all the time, in a "paranormal" context that we tend to ignore or belittle?
* What if everything we need to know is contained in our conscious minds, of which we habitually employ the merest surface layer?
* How could we consciously employ these different forms of information, and what would it mean to us in the daily practical world to do so? And how far should we go with this idea?

She offers that she's unsure *anyone* can arrive at an empirical conclusion about synchronicity, clairvoyance and precognition. Acknowledging that a lot of nonsense has been attached to dreams, ESP, and alternative perceptions, she maintains that swinging the pendulum the other way--tossing out coincidences and dreams as meaningless--cuts us off from an entire psychological landscape. According to Watkins, this stance is a hopeless folly that diminishes a sense of community and optimism.

So why bother examining the nature of coincidence? Moreover, why invest the time and energy to catalogue these coincidences and dreams tinged with clairvoyance and precognition? Watkins answers:

"...in the middle lies a window to the workings of consciousness; clues as to how and why we got here and maybe even a way to mitigate (or at least expose the roots of) messes. And this is where I think an anecdotal, yet sensible look-see at coincidence and oddball connections and encounters is worth a study, or at least an inquiry, without specifying proof or disproof as an absolute..."

The author suggests that coincidence clusters can reveal important information about individuals and human consciousness as a whole. For example, the "Google Mind", as she calls it, can "attract" to us desired information and, acting as a form of precognition, can retrieve information into forms like "charged patterns". The resulting "coincidence parable" would illustrate, by association, the central issue that called up one's precognitive radar in the first place. Watkins also explains how coincidence "updates" itself-and, interestingly, both illuminate and *change* the past!

What a Coincidence! logs dozens of synchronistic happenings-from the complex to the simple. While a few of the situations are downright amazing, the intricacies of the personal anecdotes outweigh the surprise, at times. It's like having a stranger tell you a complex story involving various relatives and friends, towns and shops, while your head spins trying to keep track of it all. Interesting, yes, but keeping track of the details can be mind numbing.

Nevertheless, this book was a (mostly) engrossing read about one woman's experience with meaningful coincidences. Some of these coincidences span years and intersect with startling timing.

However, the author comes across as a fussy, cranky, aloof individual. I found it interesting that the synchronicities she depicted-while providing a mental "aha! Isn't this neat!" experience for her-didn't seem to influence her towards a more positive, compassionate outlook in life-despite the fact that they appeared to be customized for her own attitudes. Because of the lack of transformation, the book seemed incomplete-or, at least, unsatisfying. Why painstakingly catalogue dreams and coincidences for mere mental masturbation, I wondered?

If you're fascinated by meaningful coincidences, this book provides some remarkable stories and theories about the origin, nature, and significance of synchronicities. Also, if you've been considering keeping a journal for dreams and/or coincidence clusters, What a Coincidence! just might give you that nudge you've been looking for.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2005-09-28

Please delete my earlier review and instead publish the following final version:

For A lover of coincidences like me this book is a feast: a veritable smorgasbord of coincidences, dreams, precognition and psychological insight served up in the most delicious conundrums of often funny and utterly honest everyday occurrences. Written in down to earth language with the most innovative word coining phrases What a Coincidence is at the same time simple and vastly complex, and a definite page turner. My personal little coincidence with this book must not be overlooked here either. It fits right in. On September 23, 2005 my daughter and a friend went to see George Clooney's new movie Good Night, Good Luck at the New York Film Festival. I had started reading What a Coincidence the day before and on the 23rd found myself on page 111 when the phone rang. The last sentence I had read was: "I'll just have to settle for ogling George Clooney until I can reeducate myself on the pertinent allegorical derivations, that's all." Ever since George's aunt Rosemary had sung William Saroyan's Come On-a My House Armenians have a soft spot for the Clooneys. It doesn't hurt that George is a hunk. As in all true coincidences (are there any others?) the time element is so important. For it was at this moment, this precise point in time (the book is published by Moment Point Press, after all), not the sentence before or the one after, that the phone rang and my daughter informed me that after the movie none other than George Clooney had shaken her friend's hand. A great big WOW for Sue Watkins and What a Coincidence!

For fans of Phil Rickman--or, indeed, of any other British/Welsh mystery with overtones of horror and suspense--this is your book. Kingdom is a talented author, sporting a style that puts you in touch with the characters immediately. As Rickman does, Kingdom makes you want to visit the Welsh border tomorrow. Read his other book if you haven't already--before you read this one. I look forward to finding out more in the lives of Grayle, Cindy, Marcus and Bobby. Bravo.

4 out of 5 stars Not Freud or Jung but close enough.......2001-07-08

I have been facinated with dreams since I was a child (I think we all are fascinated with dreams) so I have read as much material on this subject, from the mystic to the more cognitive stuff. This book is really good. Not mystic but not to 'scientific' to require a PhD from Yale. It has helped me to understand why I dream what I dream and how the dreams I have at night are a way that my subconcious reveals to me the inner thoughts of my soul.

1 out of 5 stars All About Dreams.......2000-01-05

Okay, but readers of this book should balance the content against other compelling perspectives, e.g., DREAMS by KALLMYER is an excellent book which provides a scholarly, yet practical view that is sure to challenge the reader.

3 out of 5 stars Some very good info, but unorganized and choppy.......1999-10-19

This book could be a real gem, if only there was more focus and flow in its organization. I particularly like the methodologies put forth for dream analysis, and felt the book's strength is in its "how to" appeal. I also liked some of the background and historical perspective. I think a good editor could have re-organized and streamlined the content to make it more readable. I also did not like the frequent references to Ms. Delaney's other books. It seems like they were advertising rather than valid references.

1 out of 5 stars Our reading group was not impressed.......1999-09-17

As host of the metaphysical reading group at Pages for All Ages Bookstore in Champaign, I always release a personal review first, before the group book review. After we are settled, a member will give their opinion, and we go around the room that way with dailogue going back and forth. In the end, we rate it 1-5 stars with a zero possible. I wish our group could have given All About Dreams a better rating as the book is not without its redeeming qualities. Ms. Delany seems a personalble, inspired, and intelligent voice on the subject. But we were looking for more. Our group is comprised with astute readers from 70 to 25 years old. There are seven of us. All the readers did not have a problems with Ms. Delany, but we had a problem with depth of the exposition. Our group rating is one star because of what wasn't in it. Our group sees a UFO connection in everything it seems and that wasn't expounded upon. It was nice to see Ms. Delany's touch upon Asian concepts, but that too lacked any informative revelation from the Vedas, the Buddhist sutras, or the Tao. Everyone thought that it was there that the best information about dreams, bardos, and consciousness was. There was much complaint about the layout of the book, from the typeface to the organization of material. Very picky is the Pages reading group. Of four books reviewd thus far, only one has received five stars. The others got wacked. Just because you appear on Ophra doesn't mean much to our group. Substance, creativity, execution, and the end prodouct are what we look at. Its nothing personal to the authors, we just love great books and have very high standards. I hope someday that Ms. Delany does the ultimate book on dreams and we can rate it five stars. We wish that to all the titles and their authors.

1 out of 5 stars all about nothing.......1999-09-16

Our reading group chose this title to look at dreams. With eager anticipation we read the book. It was amazing to me that this book was so shallow. It was written like an academic paper that received a D from her professor. Not only was the content unimaginaitive and the conclusions dubious, the typefaces of the books made it hard to read - actually distracting. I wanted to find something of value and found only psycho-babble of the most unenlightened kind. For those who believe they will better understand dreams from reading this book, beware. You will understand nothing more than you do now and will in fact be loaded down with nonsense. This is a zero star book. How did it receive five stars? Five stars....in your dreams Dr.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for anyone interested in psychic phenomena.......2006-01-25

I'm interested in psychic phenomena and this book offers insight, emotion, recommendations and best of all, a lovable person's life-purpose journey for helping others. Jane is personal - like a long-lost close friend catching up with you through the pages. Her insights and lessons are not unlike those of many great psychologists, parapsychologists, philosophers and spiritual teachers. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to experience a great true story and anyone interested in psychic phenomena.

5 out of 5 stars If you think you've had a psychic experience - this is the book for you!.......2006-01-25

I can't say enough about this book or its author! This book takes you on a journey that steps into another realm of understanding, boardening one's own potential and ultimately drawing you into the mysteries of life that are still unfolding before us. In an age that seems like we've done it all, seen it all and know it all, the personal psychic journey of Jane Doherty gives others courage to explore this facinating new frontier of human experience. If you've had an experience that you don't understand, or one that causes a conflict with your personal beliefs or shakes your soul to the core, then this is a "MUST READ" for you. Of all the books I've read by sensitives, this one was not only about the journey but also of the lessons along the way. Jane shares a most intimate story that is not always an easy one to share - but one of growth and the acceptance of a precious gift that each of us possesses, if we can only find the courage to develop it.

5 out of 5 stars I'm awake!.......2005-12-08

Jane Doherty has a brilliant way of writing exactly what you need to hear. She is not only giving you keys to unlock your own purpose in life, but she is telling her very own personal story. You follow her journey and skepticism all the way through her experiences with meeting her guides, connecting with relatives on the spiritual plane, etc. It is a step by step book, acknowledging dreams, visions, your "minds eye", and other psychic ability. Not only that, but she is aware that every human has the ability to tap into their psychic ability. Basically everyone has intuition, but why do or don't you listen to it? And who is sending these messages? Your questions will be answered in this book. She talks about meditation and relaxation, how to find self-love, and how important patience is. This book has everything! You will find that upon setting down the book, you might even have your own "experience"!!! I know I have! I cannot imagine anyone interested in the paranormal, or spiritual phenomenon giving anything but praise to this book. Every chapter ends with her "Insights" that recap what she has learned, and things for "us" to learn or think about. This book is one of the best I've ever read! Thanks Jane!

5 out of 5 stars Unlike any other..............2005-12-08

This is an amazing book, unlike any other you've read. Jane is incredibly gifted and also generous. She teaches you step by step how to open up your mind/energy in a very detailed and descriptive way, and then how to go deeper. Simultaneously, you'll share her own experiences and can compare the sensations and your own reactions to what you are feeling. Also, at the end of each chapter, there are further exercises you can do. Each part of this book is fantastic and very special. I read A LOT of metaphysical material, and have never read a book so complete, detailed and generous with information (general information about psychic work as well as personal information about Jane herself). I have also had the pleasure recently of a personal reading with Jane, and it was a warm, moving, loving, amazing experience. I cannot say enough great things about Jane and this book, as well as anything in this world that she undertakes.

5 out of 5 stars Jane is the truth!.......2005-06-05

Jane Doherty is the real deal and she shows you how to open the psychic within yourself. This book will help you to realize that there is a psychic within all of us just waiting to be acknowledge. Jane Doherty is the truth!

Be sure the book you order has color illustrations, not black and white ones. This version may be the black-and-white photocopy I've seen of the original classic published by the Theosophical Society. Both the original and the black-and-white version present the same textual descriptions, which are vivid, wise and beautifully crafted. The original presents 26 wondrous and compelling color illustrations, including health auras and mental, astral and causal bodies as seen by Bishop Leadbeater. However, a recent and terribly disappointing publication from a different publisher merely presents crude black and white illustrations, which do no justice to the text. I recommend contacting the Theosophical Society to be sure you obtain the authentic version.

Book Description

She"s innocent and sexy, demure yet flirtatious, with a combination of sweetness and sass that has captivated audiences for over 70 years. She"s America"s first animated sex symbol, Betty Boop, and she is as popular now as ever. Created by legendary animator Max Fleischer in 1930, Betty Boop is enjoying a retro renaissance with fans and collectors worldwide. In 1996 she became the first cartoon star to be profiled on Arts & Entertainment Television"s popular series Biography. This irresistible little keepsake book pairs Betty"s classic images with a Boop-Oop-A-Doop poem on love and romance: Love will keep you on your toes. Love can cure the deepest woes. And when your spirit starts to droop . . . Love brings back your Boop-Oop-A-Doop! Sweet and simple, just like Betty. It"s the perfect gift for any Betty fan, and those who aren"t familiar with Betty"s charms will love this introduction to the original cartoon siren. Whether she"s giving one of her famous winks, or puckering her perfectly pouty lips for a kiss, Betty Boop is simply Boop-a-licious!

5 out of 5 stars Skillful Means: Patterns for Success .......2007-07-18

How much work do you actually get done each day? Be honest. How much time do you spend putting off tasks that you hate, making excuses about why something isn't complete, or playing little scenarios in your head about what could happen if you don't get that job complete? Maybe you find yourself filling you coffee cup more times than you should, chatting with a colleague about last night's hockey game, or find yourself planning your weekend. The end result is usually hurried work filled with mistakes.

Although work apathy is common, it doesn't have to be. Much of the problem is that we find no value in our work. Basically, we spend eight hours working today and tomorrow we have to come back to do it all again. However, if we mindfully focused on the job at hand like it was the most important thing to do, like we had a deadline in one hour, and like it was our life's passion we'd get more quality work done in far less time.

Skillful Means: Patterns for Success teaches the reader about how to get rid of work apathy while increasing self confidence, self esteem, and personal energy. Some of the topics explored include caring about work, wasting energy, relaxation, concentration, time, how to cope, superficiality, competition, communication, and cooperation. Most of the sections are complete with easy to try exercises to increase skills in these various aspects.

5 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful Buddhist Business Book.......2007-05-17

This book is a great manual for having a happy and effective professional life. It is one of my all time favorites. I work as a Business Coach and Life Coach and refer clients to this book regularly. Tulku's basic premise is that creativity is not something only some of us are blessed with, that it is a given for everyone and expressing ourselves through our work is our natural way. Using his Buddhist practice as a foundation, the book is a series of short essays divided into three parts, Awareness, Change and Sharing. Each essay is written with both economy and precision. He makes simple but profound distinctions on topics such as Change, How to Use our Human Resources and Working at the Gut Level. He covers every topic in an incredibly practical and elegant way. I have referred this book to innumerable clients and friends and reread myself half a dozen times, it's simplicity and usefulness is a rare find in business texts.

5 out of 5 stars Overworked? This book can save your life!!.......2005-08-01

This is NOT a book for Buddhists.
This is NOT a book for Dharma practicioners and students.
This IS a book for people who are feeling overworked and overtired.

Tarthang Tulku is the author of a great number of books on Tibetan Buddhism. He is a high teacher in the Nyingma lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. Don't let that dissuade you from buying and reading this book. This is not a book about Buddhism. It is a book about using some ideas and practices that can make our working lives easier.

Tarthang Tulku shows us that our work can be a joy, not a torment. He shows us why it should be a source of happiness, and how to make it that way and to keep it that way.
This book is uniquely devoid of Buddhist jargon and Tibetan vocabulary. It is brief and easy to read. The author provides clear and lucid explanations of the points he makes, and then he gives us simple exercises to help us experience what he is trying to teach us. You do not have to be a Buddhist to appreciate his message. I got the distinct feeling that this book was not written only for Buddhists, but that it is aimed at American workers, (regardless of religious upbringing)who feel the strain of overwork, and believe that work is interfering with their spiritual life. Sometimes, we resent our jobs, and look at our work as an obstacle to our spiritual growth. Tarthang Tulku shows us that our work can become a major part of that growth.

5 out of 5 stars IF WE CAN ACCESS WORKING FOR SPIRITUAL GAIN..........2000-11-19

we will both be happy and rich simultaneously. This book is the pioneer and forerunner of this concept. Later Tarthang Tulku Rinpoche would come out with "Mastering Successful Work". A sequel to this book. "Skillful Means" is his bestselling work to date. Why? Because, to be frank, most people want to be happy and just don't have the time to study and meditate as well. And with familys, the issue is a mute one. There is no time. But if we can convert our working time and taking care of the kids, transform this time, into gaining insight spiritually, then, well, WOW! I have read this book 11 times (yes, eleven!). More than any other book that I have ever read. You will be given a series of lessons on work. When we have lots to do, we tense up. We get the adrenaline flowing. Which is extremely hard on both the body and mind. In fact, you may ask yourself, "Why am I murdering myself like this? Year after year?" Well, the author doesn't want to disillusion you of your beliefs. But the more you relax, the faster you can work. And the better your work is. You will learn about the three mainstays of Skillful Means ("upaya" in Tibetan): awareness, concentration, and and energy or ACE in "Mastering Successful Work". This book is your primer and you will be advised to study it before you attack the next book. According to Tarthang Tulku, the mind is like the lens in a camera. These three factors need to be adjusted according to the work that you are doing. If you are trying to put a thread through a needle, your "C" (concentration) must increase incredibly while your awareness and energy must decline. If someone is talking to you at the same time, your "awareness" must increase thus making sure that you can not put the thread though the eye of the needle! Try it! They don't teach us any of this in school or college. Which is a real misery. Buy these two volumes and learn how to "focus" your camera properly. This can be your meditation. Good Luck.

5 out of 5 stars Discover How Your Work Can be a Mindful, Joyous Activity.......2000-05-26

This is one of Tarthang Tulku's most accessible and practical books. Tulku's greatest gift is his ability to clearly communicate techniques for meditation and mindful living that came from his Tibetan Buddhist experience. Tulku conveys fascinating ideas in simple terms which can be readily applied in anyone's life, regardless of spiritual or religious orientation -- or even what kind of work you do!

Most of Tulku's books contain wonderful exercises to practice the concepts he describes, and this book is no exception. For example, the very first chapter describing Inner Freedom offers three ways to practice improving clarity, concentration, and mindfulness. The patterns of success that Tulku discusses in great detail in this book have to do with self awareness, coping with change, and sharing with others. Long before anyone heard the term "emotional intelligence", Tulku was practicing and teaching it.

Just reading Tulku's writing improves my facilities for meditation and mindfulness, by focusing my attention on the process of thought itself. It's always a joy for me to read anything written by this master of consciousness!

5 out of 5 stars Happiness at the Heart.......2005-07-19

Divine Distraction is very well written book by James Steinberg
about Spiritual Life in the Company of a True Spiritual Master, it is both educational and informative for those with an interest or response to this subject. The matter of Divine Distraction is not something that just happens to You, it is a response to something perhaps more profound and heart opening than you have ever experienced before. Adi Samraj is the source and object of such distraction, by reading his words and feeling James Steinbergs relationship to Adi Da Samraj it is very clear that there is something to be cherished between a spiritual master and his devotee, something also very profound which strikes at the core of our very existence. What this book reveals is the essence of such a relationship and what it is to truly recognise a true spiritual master and how to relate to such a one in the traditional manner. This book is particularly informative for the westerner in everyone, giving information that may be completely unknown or nievely mis-interpreted. I thoroughly recommend this book if you have aspirations in this field and even if you do not.

1 out of 5 stars or "How to Avoid Your Feelings of Paternal Abandonment".......2003-01-15

A book for chumps who can't find the internal authority of their own. Now don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with being a sensitive person but, one needs to seek permission to be so from within one's self rather than looking to "daddy", boss, or guru to make it O.K. You'd do better to grow the backbone to trust your essential nature. Be your own guru. And as for Da? Good for him! He figured out how to capitalize on a deep psychological need of many and, he got his own island out of it! Way to go Da! (or whatever you call yourself now.)

5 out of 5 stars The relationship of devotees and genuine Spiritual Masters.......2002-01-28

This is a well-written book that is both moving and detailed, providing all the essentials of the Guru-devotee relationship. We often think of great Spiritual Masters and the religious traditions that formed around them in terms of teachings, rituals, and disciplines. This book makes crystal clear that, in fact, the heart of the relationship between the disciple and master has always been the reception by the disciple of a tangible, ego-dissolving Spiritual Transmission from the Master. Words alone (and even merely human charisma) could not account for fisherman walking away from their families and professions to follow a man who said only, "Come, follow me." Nor could the merely visible account for the gopi women instantly leaving their cattle to follow Krishna. No! These ordinary people were overwhelmed and utterly distracted by tangible Spiritual love. The possibility of such a genuine Spiritual Master being alive today - the primary communication of this remarkable book - is enough to make one's hair stand on end!

Sadly, the materialistic cult of our time tends not only to rob us of such opportunities, but to make taboo even the very conception of such possibilities. When the very existence of God is denied, obviously a Spiritual Master can only be interpreted as a charlatan (as suggested by the earlier, misinformed comment). . . religions can only be viewed as having merely social benefit . . . and spiritual books can only be read for new, ego-stimulating information (a kind of spiritual pornography, dismissed if not sufficiently new and stimulating), rather than as a guidebook for real practice of the Way of God Realization (not self-realization = ego-realization) that never changes.

Were Jesus to return today, He would not be crucified. He would either be ignored (unable to stand out sufficiently in the crowd of New Age "spiritual" offerings with which He would have to compete); or, He would be "nailed" by lawsuits or by character defamation as a "cult leader", triggered by His unusual behavior (e.g., forming a religion around Himself, whipping merchants in temples, having close relationships with whores, suggesting His own Divinity, instigating anti-government activities, etc.) The only thing saving the historical Jesus from this fate right now is the fact that we are a historically (and nominally) Christian culture.

May all of us who intuit the existence of the Divine, and who respect the work of the great Spiritual Masters as Agents of the Divine, actively counter all mean-spirited attempts to perpetuate the centuries-old taboo against Spiritual Masters!

1 out of 5 stars dangerous distraction from realization.......2001-05-15

Master Da is an exploitative sort-of cult leader who promotes service to an "enlightened guru" as the only path to self-realization.His works might be well-intentioned, but they are certainly wrong. He is another Bhagwan Rajneesh waiting to happen. This book is just a promotion of his teachings created by his disciples; Da hasn't had any new ideas in a decade, at least not since he changed his name yet again.
