inspiring.......2006-02-26
This book covers many interesting Christian value based financial topics, with an emphasis on an older audience. Topics include predictable things like sensible investment strategies, insurance needs, considerations in setting up a will or a trust, tax considerations, etc. One topic that did surprise me somewhat was the discussion about the meaning of retirement. That chapter might make some readers pause and consider what their goals are in life. Overall - a very good book as I expected from the late Mr Burkett.
Solid Financial Advice For All Christians.......2004-01-06
The authors Larry Burkett and Ron Blue offer sound financial advice for Christians in their 40's or 50's preparing for the second half of life (but useful to people of any age). What your mother and father didn't know and couldn't teach you.
Did you know that our cost of living DOUBLES every twenty-four years? (using an inflation rate of just 3%) Will you outlive your savings and investments? Will Social Security be enough? How do you live debt-free in a material world? Are your investments in balance with the current economy? When should you invest in stocks? 401k's? Conventional IRA or Roth IRA? Bonds? Real estate? Certificates of Deposit? When is the right time to "cash out"? Is your head spinning yet?
Based on core Christian principles, the authors discuss nearly every area of personal finance, including the importance of giving and the myths surrounding retirement. Very straight-forward and easy to understand. Includes common questions and answers at the end of each chapter, interesting stories and personal experiences of the authors, scripture references, interactive worksheets and tables. A "must read" for every Christian.

Book Description
During the Spanish Inquisition on the island of Majorca, a small enclave of local Jews--all of whom have been baptized as Christians--determine to escape detention in the Inquisition by escaping to lands of freedom across the Atlantic. But weather frustrates their flight, and eventually thirty-seven of them were captured and condemned to burn at the stake in the Auto-de-Fe. In prose at once lyrical and suspenseful, Riera recreates the lives of Majorcan Jews in the seventeenth century--in a world of inquisitors, aristocrats, merchants, farmers, and soldiers--in a lush mosaic of history and period detail, religion and cultural lore. Already acclaimed around the world, In the Last Blue is at once a beautiful, poetic, riveting, and devastating tale of hope and fear.

Customer Reviews:
I owe Dick Waterman a beer for this.......2005-01-04
As a blues enthusiast, I have always found myself looking for the inside stories, the newly discovered photographs or the alternative recordings of the players that literally changed my life 35 years ago when I was in high school. To find that Dick Waterman was a common link among so many of the greatest blues figures of the last century was a revelation. I knew of his relationship to Son House, and will forever speak his name with reverance for bringing him out of Rochester, NY to record again in the 60's. But all these other guys? Dick Waterman, thank you for putting more flesh on to the legends of so many of these guys, most of whom are now gone. I am grateful.
Windows on the Blues.......2004-01-24
Dick Waterman's photographs are a stunning chronicle of the art and music that are most important to me. Dick calls his photographs products of opportunity and access, but they are far more. I would submit that Dick's "Son House at the Liberty Bell" ranks with the top echelon of 20th century American photographs.
If you have a passing interest in blues or fine photography; you need this book. If you are a fan of the music or the art, you absolutely must have this book.
Indescribably Wonderful.......2004-01-21
There really are no words to fully describe what a treasure this book is--which is entirely appropriate given that Mr. Waterman himself is an American treasure. Whether you are a hardcore blues fan or a casual listener, the photographs in this book will take your breath away. The stories that accompany them strip away the mythology to reveal the humanity beneath, and leave you looking at these legendary artists through fresh and more honest eyes.
I simply can't recommend this book highly enough. Buy a copy for yourself, and then buy as many as you can for your family and friends. You will not be sorry.
a great read not just for the blues geeks.......2003-12-30
An extraordinary read! I feared that this book was receiving so much praise because blues geeks felt that they had to eulogize the talents of this famed sixties blues promoter. No, it's not hype, this book really does hit new highs in great closeup shots and portraits, woven together with rich and personal tales that describe the crossing of Waterman's path with that of many of the greatest blues musicians ever. Some chapters are touched with sadness, such as the exploitation of Arthur Crudup's royalties (only for Waterman to help secure a rich reward for the family estate shortly after Crudup's death). Others are hilarious, such as the exposure of Robert Lockwood as being perhaps the sweariest bluesman ever. I could go on, but readers deserve to discover these stories for themselves. Albeit to say that the human sides of many famous musicians are exposed here, be they glorious or grim or bizarre. The only other blues read that I know of that gets so close up and personal in text and pictures is perhaps Tim Duffy's from the Musicmaker Foundation, entitled: "Musicmakers: portraits and songs from the roots of america". In fact the two books are complementary because whilst Waterman's subjects are by and large towering figures of the blues who have mostly died by now, Tim Duffy's subjects remain somewhat obscure and undiscovered by the main stream but many are still alive and kicking the blues in a neighbourhood near you.
Rush to your book store!!!!.......2003-12-21
Once I started reading this book, putting it down was impossible. Dick Waterman's stories about the various blues musicians were as impressive as the outstanding photos in the book. It felt like I was pulled inside this incredible book and for a moment felt like I personally knew and was living with these people. The believability of this book was truly enhanced by Dick Waterman's honesty. He truly says it as it is. This book is not only interesting for blues officianados, but also for anyone interested in American history, great photography and captivating stories.

Scotland Yard Superintendent Richard Jury returns in a compelling novel, the 17th in Grimes's long-running series. Mickey Haggerty, Jury's old friend and colleague, is dying of cancer. So Jury can hardly refuse his request to look into what Mickey suspects is a 50-year-old case of switched identities. It surfaces when the last World War II bomb site in London is excavated for a new development, exposing the skeletal remains of a woman and infant. Mickey thinks the dead infant wasn't the baby of Kitty Riordan, Maisie Tynedale's nanny, as Kitty claimed, but was Maisie herself, the heiress to a brewery fortune. Did Kitty engineer the masquerade? And did Simon Croft, who was writing a book about London in the war years, discover it? When Croft is killed and his computer stolen, Jury sends his pal Melrose Plant to snoop around Tynedale Lodge disguised as a gardener. There he encounters a charming trio of amateurs: a homeless urchin and his extremely clever dog Sparky, and Gemma, a Tynedale ward whose mysterious background may hold the clue to Simon's murder as well as the still unsolved attempt on her young life.
As usual, Plant's world of eccentric friends and relatives is nicely evoked in a subplot that leads him on a surprising holiday in Florence, during which he acquires just enough knowledge of Italian Renaissance painting to pull off another disguise on Jury's behalf. Grimes weaves the threads of this rich tapestry together in a surprise ending that not even Grimes aficionados will sense coming. But it's an appropriate conclusion, given the book's brooding tone, established in the opening pages by a dying friend's obsession and sustained as the investigation forces Jury to confront his own haunted memories of the war. This is a solid page turner, marked by Grimes's unerring sense of pacing, respectful but provocative poking around in Jury's soul, and topnotch storytelling ability. --Jane Adams
Book Description
Scotland Yard superintendent Richard Jury recruits a reluctant Melrose Plant to solve a case of mistaken identity revolving around London's last bomb site-where once stood a pub called the Blue Last.
Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Work of Fiction, if not a Stellar Mystery.......2007-06-12
I have been reading the Richard Jury Mystery series in order over the last two years or so, and I am impressed by their increasing sophistication. The mystery aspect of the works has lessened, although the main plots are still convoluted enough to retain interest 'till the end. But what really makes these works so compelling is the way that Grimes weaves together other stories that may or may not be connected to the main plot. These red herrings may not pay off at the end, but the characterizations of Grimes' locales and people still drive me to read every page. She is not just a mystery writer, but a thoughtful novelist as well, and it is interesting to watch her wrestle with her own cynicism in the words and thoughts of Jury and Plant, yet also expand their worlds as well (side trips to Boring's and Florence-not bad!). Grimes manages to masterfully expose the reader to the different worlds floating in her imagination. What more can you ask of a fiction writer?
The series quality is seriously deteriorating.......2007-06-05
I've been reading (and until recently enjoying) Martha Grimes' Richard Jury series since shortly after "The Man with a Load of Mischief" came out. But the imagined scenes with philosophers debating and generally plodding writing--not to mention the innumerable typos--finally led me to skip the middle hundred or so pages of the book (I had gotten far enough in that I still wanted to know "whodunnit"). And you know what? The book didn't suffer at all from the omission. I was quickly able to figure out what I'd missed and saved myself a couple hours of agony. After this I'm not sure I will continue with the series. (And really, she MUST stop with the internal monologues of dogs!)
The Blue Last.......2007-01-22
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. I'm thinking that Ms. Grimes has become maniacally bored with her stock characters, as this one reads as though written under the influence of a controlled substance.
Her descriptive writing can be incredibly, evocatively beautiful, and I will be looking for her poetry.
As for mysteries, given a new set of characters, NOT to include too-too precious and supernaturally brilliant children, and adults who are constantly lighting up while imbibing fine wines, I would keep her on my favorite author list.
Too long with totally unbelievable ending........2006-09-08
I must try to remember NOT to buy Martha Grimes - Richard Jury novels.
The novels get longer and longer -- filled with unnecessary and boring characters -- especially Melrose Plant.
You end up reading 442 pages until Ms. Grimes tries to wrap everything up in an totally unbeliveable ending that takes up three pages.
A real disappointment.
Good, Different but Good.......2005-01-24
My advice to those who aren't sure and are worried about Martha Grimes 'tiring' of the Richard Jury series...well first, who could blame her? But again, I'd say she's still got it. I didn't find the Long Pid characters too repetitive and alot of information is still being given to us yet about Jury and Plant. My biggest complaint? WHY, oh WHY is there no 'Mystery' BBC production of these books??? I can see it now... particularly since Jury is now aging like fine wine in the The Blue Last, Timothy Dalton as Jury and oh...say...Patrick Ryecart as Melrose Plant. But enough of that, if you want back inside Jury's head, read this book. It's British dry, as we love them.

Running 100 miles from north to south and 200 miles from east to west, the Sandhills make up about a quarter of the state of Nebraska and constitute the largest grass-stabilized dune field in the Western Hemisphere. Sparsely settled, the region has inspired a fine literature, numbering books by Jim Harrison, Mari Sandoz, and Merrill Gilfillan, among other writers.
Stephen Jones's The Last Prairie is a welcome, elegant addition to that library. An inspired blend of science, natural history, ethnography, and memoir, it recounts Jones's travels along the Niobrara River and deep into the heart of dune country--once the province of buffalo, cranes, and scattered bands of Pawnee and Cheyenne Native Americans, now the site of huge ranches and, as Jones notes, an army of white-tailed deer and other former denizens of wetland forests that edged out onto the plains with the disappearance of large predators. "When it comes to ecosystem disturbances," Jones notes, "the white-tailed deer are just the tip of the iceberg," and indeed the Sandhills are threatened at every turn by industrial agriculture and other manifestations of putative progress. Jones considers some of the programs that have been advanced to save the area, including the apparently ill-advised "Buffalo Commons" preserve that residents fear would make the region an unnatural zoo; he suggests instead a more modest prairie preserve that would attract tourists and provide new revenue for the region's residents, now dependent on ecologically destructive ranching.
But Jones's book is less a program for action than a literate, attractive celebration of a place unlike any other--a book that will inspire readers to go and have a look for themselves. --Gregory McNamee
Book Description
It is an area that has captivated and inspired travelers, philosophers, and artists for centuries. Long celebrated as one of the most visually stunning regions of the American landscape, it is also one of the most historically significant. And now, this vast, 25,000-square-mile expanse known as the Nebraska Sandhills is brought to life with passion, perspective, and ecological timeliness in an unforgettable collection by Stephen Jones.
The Last Prairie is an extraordinary triumph of the essayist's art. By turns graceful and penetrating, introspective and universal, ruminative and prescient, the 20 essays in The Last Prairie embodies the essence of Sandhills life. Jones delivers a series of riveting accounts of the Sandhills, flora and fauna, wildlife, and rich cultural history. Fascinating descriptions of bald eagles, trumpeter swans, and the annual migratory flight of a half-million sandhill cranes stand alongside equally vivid accounts of trailblazing homesteaders, range wars, and devastating prairie fires. Jones speaks eloquently to such timeless themes as humanity's search for community and the ties that bind man and nature.
Customer Reviews:
A lyrical book about a fragile habitat.......2001-06-26
Mr. Jone's admiration, appreciation and concern for this very special ecosystem shines through this lovely book. In it, he intertwines Native American myth, Plains history and well researched scientific data into a cohesive and readable overview of the Sandhills of Nebraska.
Through his eyes, we visit and experience a landscape of beauty, solitute, history and rich wildlife. It is, in turns, thought provoking, humourous, enlightening, yet never preachy. Steve is most respectful of the current private owners of these lands, and integrates their ongoing stewardship into well reasoned suggestions to insure the long-term integrity of this fecund habitat for posterity.
Sandhills Classic.......2000-07-13
The Last Prairie: A Sandhills Journal is an astonishing blend of nature, myth, and love of the land--richly textured with wry wit and something very close to wisdom. It's so deeply rooted in love and its own particular landscape that it transcends locality and becomes universal. In other words, it's a classic, akin to Annie Dillard's Pilgrim at Tinker Creek. Writing, details, and a sensibility to treasure.
A lovesong to an alluring, little-known place.......2000-06-17
Stephen Jones notes in the book that the Sand Hills of Nebraska make up one of the few "dark spots" on those wall posters featuring a satellite view of the United States at night. It is, truly, a wide open space, and he does the landscape great justice with his evident love for the land, its wildlife, its people and history.
For those who think Nebraska is simply home to a football team and endless acres of corn, "The Last Prairie" should open some eyes.
Jones is a prose poet. He makes the Sand Hills live and breathe right there on the page. An excellent, deeply-felt homage to one of America's little-known (thankfully?)great natural treasures.
When a book makes you dream about a place you've never been........2000-05-31
As often happens in Washington, DC, I got inside information. The author (my eighth grade history teacher) tipped me off about his book, before it was available. I got to read a "galley" I think it is called, and felt even more like an insider. It's exciting when a friend publishes a book, and when that friend telegraphs, with the sound in his voice, that this one might be something special. Steve knows. I read the hardback copy as soon as I got it. Growing up in Colorado gave me some appreciation of this majestic place to the East, which I now plan to visit for the first time. Stephen Jones has woven history, geography several sciences into a literary work of art, that can provide great inspiration, even to the uninitiated. His images are vivid, whether he is describing the hard-scrabble personalities that live there or the spirit-ghosts of Native Americans that have long since perished. His treatments of the landforms and myriad species of animals that dwell in the Nebraska Sandhills, are characteristically perfect. He has written a couple of other nature books, including one with his photos, called the Shortgrass Prairie. What many do not know about Steve is that he was diagnosed with a back problem before he undertook his arduous weeks long trips, the several hundred miles East. He would not want me to mention this, Steve is a low key guy. But his courage is, well, another story. I hope everyone who loves nature, and our vanishing wild places will read this book and be inspired and dream and go there.
Book Description
Maj. Gen. Joseph Wheeler served in two armies, playing a major role in the development of Confederate cavalry in the Civil War's western theater, and, more than thirty years afterwards, commanded troops in the Spanish-American War. After leaving the U.S. Army to join the Confederacy, Wheeler served in artillery and infantry units before joining the cavalry. Subsequently, he fought at Shiloh, the Battle of Murfreesboro, and other engagements. As a cavalry commander in the Army of Tennessee from mid-1862 almost to the war's end, he raided Gen. William T. Sherman's lines of communication and contested his advance in the final Carolinas campaign.
In addition to detailing Wheeler's Civil War experience, Edward Longacre discusses Wheeler's youth and education at West Point, his pre-Civil War service in the Regiment of Mounted Riflemen, his postwar business, his political career as a congressman from Alabama, and his colorful service in Cuba as a major general of volunteers during the Spanish-American War. Longacre also seeks to correct errors and misconceptions about this Civil War figure that have become a part of the public record, making Joseph Wheeler's life and career accessible to a new generation of readers. A Soldier to the Last will be a valuable addition to the library of anyone interested in Civil War history and U.S. military history.
Customer Reviews:
A Fine Biography of a Little Known Confederate General.......2007-03-02
My favorite story about Wheeler is when he was at the Battle of Las Guasimas, the first major engagement of the Spanish-American War he is rumored to have seen the Spaniards running away and to have yelled, 'Come on, we've got the damn Yankees on the run!'
Even Mr. Longacre has to admit that this is just a rumor and it's isn't known if it's true or not. But it's too good a story to let it die. And it is true that of the six ex-Confederate generals appointed to be general officers by President McKinley, Wheeler is the only one to have seen actual combat.
The bulk of this book is on Wheeler's activities during the Civil war where he began as a Second Lieutenant and worked his way up to Major General (when he was 26 years old). He was active in most of the battles of the west from Shiloh to the final surrender to Sherman in the Carolinas campaign after the defeat at Atlanta.
The war in the West has never received the attention paid to Lee and the battles in the East. And Wheeler has been overshadowed by Morgan and Forrest as cavalry leaders in the West. This book is a welcome addition to the literature.

One of baseball's real gentlemen and perhaps its only true revolutionary, Branch Rickey, as president of the Brooklyn Dodgers, made it his mission to change the game--and with it America--by obliterating the color line in 1947. As it took an extraordinary man of will in Jackie Robinson to bear the on-the-field brunt of Rickey's daring, it took a man of equal resolve and courage to conceive and implement the plan in the first place. Rickey, creator as well of baseball's farm system, left a giant and enduring legacy. This slim volume of epigrams and observations--on character, attitude, and baseball itself--compiled from his letters, notes, and personal papers is a treasure trove of good sense, keen insight, and, indeed, some genuine inspiration, a true reflection of the singular man who penned them.
Book Description
Branch Rickey's own words from his personal papers are skillfully compiled to form a book of witticisms and observations that abounds with common sense and insight, stands today a work of inspiration.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic Book to Help Anyone Interested in Learning Baseball.......2006-04-14
Branch Ridley's Little Blue Book is simply fantastic. Anyone, young or old can learn the specifics of playing the game of baseball. They have to certainly read every page and apply it to their game, and it is almost guaranteed to improve their ability. I would recommend it to every coach from Little League on up to the Major League. I have purchased one for all the grandsons playing the game, and plan to purchase more for others.
A Window into the Soul of Branch Rickey.......2000-03-16
This book proves why one's words are a window into one's soul. None of the several works I've read about Rickey show his personality so clearly as this, or make him appear as interesting. To read this is to know Rickey the humorist, Rickey the parsimonious paternalist, Rickey the wise man, Rickey the businessman and Rickey the talent. The quotes by him and about him show why Rickey would have been an immense success in whatever field he chose. Thank God it was baseball.
Words of wisdom from one of the great minds of the game........1998-11-01
Branch Rickey brought Jackie Robinson into the major league, breaking the color barrier. And that wasn't the only barrier he broke during his 60 years in baseball. A terrible player and unsuccessful major league manager, he excelled in spotting talent and teaching players how to play and live. He single-handedly invented the modern farm system for developing talent. A notorious cheapskate, he inspired tremendous loyalty. This book contains his own words, extracted from over a hundred boxes of his writings that are archived at the Library of Congress. I'm giving it as an end of the season present to my assistant coaches on my little league team.

Book Description
With a career that exemplified the maturation of romantic black pop into a sophisticated form spanning social and sexual polities, Marvin Gaye was one of the most consistent and enigmatic of the Motown hit makers. Through interviews with many of the artists and record-company employees closest to the singer, Edmonds examines in detail the making of the legendary What's Going On. In an era of Vietnam and civil rights protests, Gaye's determination and vision resulted not only in inspirational, pioneering grooves but in an album that challenged America to take a long, hard look at itself.

Not only for Marvin fanatics..........2003-01-16
I've read all of the books written about Marvin and picked this up to add to the collection, expecting it to be little more than expanded liner notes for the album. Wow. Very wrong. The book ends up encompassing Marvin's entire life through the scope of his most acclaimed work. It's beautifully written, unfolding more like a novel than you'd ever expect. It's a genuinely moving look at a true artist taking the boldest step of his...and arguably any other musician's...life. I can't recommend this highly enough, both as an admirer of Marvin's and as someone who just likes to read a great book.

"It's a boy!"
To hear these words is the dream of every mother. From her son, a woman learns what it feels like to grow up in a male body. As his trusted adviser, teacher, and friend, she helps to shape his view of himself, of others, and of the world. She instills values and ideals that will stay with him throughout his life, and she has so many hopes and dreams for the man he will become. Because of her son, a mother's life will be more meaningful, her joys will be greater, and her heart will experience the greatest love imaginable.
"Boys will be boys!"
There are moments in a son's life when he tests his mother's resolve, as well as her patience, but the bond between them is unbreakable. She is his mirror for how he looks at the world and for how the world looks at him. As a child, he will turn to her for guidance, understanding, and support; as he grows older, he will do everything he can to protect and care for her. Though he may have difficulty putting his feelings into words, there is never any doubt of a son's respect, devotion, and incredible love for his mother.
