My New Home Decorating Bible.......2007-08-22
I bought several books trying to help me get my home decorated in my style, but not really knowing my style. I have never really had enough money to decorate a home before so after 10 + years of marriage, I wanted this home to show a bit of my personality. This was the key ingredient I needed to spark my imagination. The color combinations really do have emotions that are triggered and helped me to find the right colors for the moods I want in my home.
One fair warning, after reading this, you may end up wanting to go with colored trim. We are learning quick, changing your trim color is either time consuming (if you are a diy) or expensive (if you hire it done). But so far it has been worth it; the colors really play off each other. Even one of the painters I had give me a bid wants a copy of Color Scheme Bible.
The other decorating books will end up more of coffee table items for looking, but not very helpful. You can't copy someone else's style when you know you have your own. It just helps to have something to spark that style, and since I didn't have a treasured fabric or plate or something that designers like to use, I had to use this Bible.
My English written book came with several pages in German, though. Hopefully, they have resolved that problem. But I wasn't willing to part with it long enough to return it and wait for a new one to be sent, it has been a well used resource for my new home.
Great Inspiration.......2007-06-14
This book has a lot of ideas and inspiration about colours. Some schemes are daring, but all of them seems an professional work!
Colour combination chart in spiral book form with hard cover.......2007-06-08
A book that is more for carrying around when colour schemes are being planned. It is small in size. Each page has an imaginative and inspiring title that distinguishes one combination of colour from another. It does not have many interior design photographic examples of the combinations suggested. It is like a palette with suggestions.
just one little thing I didn't like.......2007-04-13
The color combinations are nice, but the photographs do not represent
all different kinds of design styles, only one, simple and sparse. Most people don't live in homes that are so plain, so it is impossible to know how these colors would look in more expensive "designer" spaces.
Just what I needed!.......2007-03-01
I love color and I was always working to try to find color schemes for rooms in our home and often ended up finding that I'd picked something that felt lifeless or didn't fit us. This book is just exactly what I was looking for! I stumbled across it in the library when we moved to our most recent residence. What a find! The authors include dozens of potential palettes along with information about the mood, potential executions and inspirations behind the choices they offer. This is now my secret decorating weapon. For the first time, I feel like a grown-up when I set up a home!

A good reference book.......2007-06-08
Learning from experience takes too long. It is better to read this book so that designing with the right combination of colours is more cost effective and less hassle.
Good color combos.......2007-03-09
This is a good book on color for your home.
The first part of the book covers the color wheel and basic color theory. It's nothing new, and not really detailed, but a nice overview.
Then each chapter focuses on a different main color. The pictures of the rooms are beautiful - very much like you might see in Better Homes, Country Home, or Country Living magazines - and usually show a good use of the color scheme they are portraying. It is not too trendy, most seem like you could live with them for many years.
I would have liked to see deeper and brighter oranges though. Leaned heavily toward apricots and corals.
Also needed more warm-toned browns.
The end of the book has all the color schemes used in the book, for matching to paint chips or fabric samples. Also a nice way to match color schemes if you were planning a whole house, since the main color in a plan turns up as an accent in other plans.
This book could also be useful to crafters looking for new colors to try together. I'm thinking of using some of the color schemes in knitting.
Very helpful.......2007-01-09
This is a great reference book. Having just built our home, I needed some professional help in the coordination of the colours I wished to use and it gave me some fresh great ideas I would never have thought of on my own. Highly recommended.
Helpful & Inspiring!.......2007-01-05
This book offers some rare inspiration that I've been hard pressed to find elsewhere. What it does especially well is lay out multitudes of color combinations that one would not normally think of as harmonious...then provides great photographs of actual rooms tastefully done in these purposed color schemes.
I'm a Garden Designer by profession ...not an interior decorator...but there are very few color guide books relating to plants thathave anything new to say. I often rely on the tools of Interior Designers & their books for help. I've bought several books on the this topic & this book is by far one of the best....& it's not only helpful indoors but has been useful in giving me ideas for outdoor groupings of furniture & planters, house colors etc too....
I highly recommend it & suggest anyone looking for new & innovative color schemes check into getting this book!
Unique and helpful.......2006-05-18
Excellent book to provide inspiration and ideas for selecting and mixing color schemes. Information is divided by color families. Each room has a sample color palette. In addition there is a complete section at the back of all the color palettes used so you can bring them with you when you select your paint. I refer to this book often.
Book Description
This rare book invited homeowners of the Victorian era to eschew "white houses with green blinds" and join in the revolutionary trend towards colorful houses. They explain clearly how to mix primary and secondary colors to achieve such popular, mellow tones of the period as olive, russet, citrine, buff, plum, and sage. 20 color plates.
Customer Reviews:
How to mix colors.......2007-03-08
To quote the book, "Those of our readers who expect to find lists comprising all the various scales of color, giving definite information as to what particular color should be used to harmonize with this or that shade, and telling just what combinations are allowable, and just what are to be condemned, will, therefore, be disappointed." This book covers how to prime wood and mix colors (reddish brown color is achieved by mixing Indian red and burnt umber) and does give specific color schemes. This is a reprint from 1883, and the authors mentioned that the printer could not replicate most of the color schemes they envisioned (maybe I need to get watercolor paint and mix the suggested colors to see what they intended). We are building a Victorian home, and I was looking for ideas of what worked well in the past, but the rust red, dark mustard yellow, greens and browns they showed did not inspire me as I had hoped. It does have helpful information about color selection, but it is fairly generic in nature. Most of the plates are house exteriors, but there are a few interior plates as well.
Simpla & Basic.......2006-02-22
Good for someone with a need for very basic color scheme for historic homes. No imagination needed. Colors are boring by our modern day standards, but give the old world look desired in the older victorian neighborhoods that despise the brighter californian look.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing - very heavy color schemes.......2007-04-25
I agree with a previous reviewer. You won't find many references to pastels/softer colors. Expect to see representations of 'extreme' color schemes that - in my opinion - must of us won't use in our homes.
I bought this book as well:
The Color Scheme Bible: Inspirational Palettes for Designing Home Interiors
I found this book MUCH more useful and suited to my tastes.
great buy, great service.......2005-09-03

Essential reading if you're decorating with feng shui .......2005-03-09
Feng shui recommends colors for each area of your home or business. However, turning this into an impressive color scheme often requires advice beyond standard feng shui books. "Annie Sloan's Color Schemes: For Every Room" is one of the very best if you want your surroundings to look as if you've hired a professional decorator.
Let's say that you're working on your Fame and Reputation area, which is often what visitors see first when they enter your home or office. Red is recommended, but... then what?
In Annie Sloane's lavishly illustrated book, you can start at the "Reds Plus" page and choose a color theme. For example, if you'd like a Pacific Islands look, start with Hibiscus Red--a slightly orange-ish red--and accent it with Gauguin Blue, a greyish medium blue.
Next, turn to the Pacific Islands section of the book and see the many other colors that will work well with your basic red and blue "islands" theme. You may want to add Banana Leaf Green, Lagoon Blue, Guava Orange, or Mango Yellow.
And, if these colors don't sound familiar, the book is filled with good, large swatches. You can take the book to the paint or home furnishings store to match the looks that you like.
If you'd prefer an African Visions theme for your Fame area, Ms. Sloan suggests starting with Ghana Red and Clearwater Green. If your tastes are more traditional and favor antiques, choose the Neoclassical colors of Aubusson Pink and a lovely bamboo shade of brown called Sandstone.
For your Money area, instead of overloading the corner with purples, choose an Elizabethan Pageant theme, and a muted Lavender Sachet shade, accented by a lovely pale Cambridge Blue. If you favor vivid colors reminiscent of fine art and the coast of France, Ms. Sloan offers an Impressionist palette. Or, Mambo Carnival colors may liven up an otherwise sedate or dark corner.
What I like best about this book is that it helps me to break out of the "crayon box colors" approach to feng shui. I'm using this book when decorating, but also for innovative color combinations in my art and photography.
If you're working with color for any reason, but especially with feng shui, I heartily recommend "Annie Sloan's Color Schemes: For Every Room." --Aisling D'Art, Feng Shui editor, BellaOnline
Eye-opener.......2003-08-14
How many people can put together a room's palette, in the right tone and hue, all the way down to the third accent color. Not me.
This book was fun to study. The colors she picks really do work well together. I sort of felt like I was cheating a bit to think to just lift the entire palette from the page and use in my apartment, but on the other hand, "traditional" color schemes use standard collections as well.
I liked the Manhattan styles most. Yes, they did remind me of some "crisp" apartments I've seen.

Customer Reviews:
Slightly uneven but catches you in the end.......2007-08-08
Having thoroughly enjoyed the first book in this series I was slightly disapointed in this book. In the beginning the characters have a lot of banter and it seems as if some of the dialogue is forced. It doesn't come as naturally to the characters as it did in the first book. The book then takes a darker turn when Haley starts to fall apart as the murder she witnessed brings back unpleasant memories from her past. The emotions go quickly from high to low and it was a little difficult to engage with the character.
Once Haley decides to get involved in the investigation (not until about mid-way through the book) the story gets a lot more interesting. This is the point that the characters start to feel a little more real and the story seems to pick up. The interaction between Haley and Dutch was very interesting and the investigation kept my attention. The ending was good but I did leave with some unanswered questions. There was a very quick wrap-up to the investigation and I would have appreciated a few more clarification on the details such as how the body got to that patio in the first place. I also would have liked some dialogue from Haley's dad on what had happened and some closure for the characters. We hear very little from the criminals at the end and it left me wanting a few more answers from them.
I appreciated Haley's human characteristics in the first book but she seemed a little too over the edge this time around. Hopefully the next book in the series brings back some of the realness of her character.
Overall, I would recommend borrowing the book from the library or a friend before buying. It may be your cup of tea but I wouldn't add it to my permanent collection.
Christian Mystery with a slight hard edge feel.......2007-06-05
Ginny Aiken writes a mystery that the a mystery lover would like if they don't want to figure out "who done it" before the end of the book. In this fascinating Christian mystery Haley Farrell, an interior decorator gets caught in a bizarre murder investigation. It leads down a narrow path, or so the reader thinks until the bitter end.
Aiken is the mother of four boys and has a a very diverse grouping of jobs in her life. In her biography it states that she was born in Cuba, and then raised in Venezuela. She is also the author of twenty-one published books so far.
This specific work was interesting, a fast and easy read. The descriptions of things, and of the characters emotions were wonderful. The characters were also well written with just enough background story that the reader is not lost on who they are. The plot of the book flows seemlessly from beginning to end. Another wonderful aspect is that the factual things in this book are accurate. Especially about learning how to scuba dive.
Recommended reading for anyone who wants a cozy/hard edge blood mystery. Images and emotions will follow the reader even after the book is done. Sue Grafton fans would probably enjoy this heroin and her cast of supporting characters.
Christian mystery suffering from identity crisis.......2006-07-24
Decorating Schemes by Ginny Aiken is the second book in the Deadly Decor Mystery series. I think that this series is undergoing an identity crisis. It wants to be a humorous, light mystery, but real human drama keeps sneaking in. It's hard as a reader to take some of the characters, like Bella, seriously when she can't seem to string together a sentence without mispronouncing a word, but then Haley has so many demons she's fighting, it's difficult to balance them both in the same book. Bella is obviously a character, but Haley seems much more real. Haley, an interior designer, again stumbles upon a dead body while getting ready to remodel a home. This time the body is that of a young girl, and Haley's former nemesis Dutch Merrill is the prime suspect. Lily Tsu makes another appearance, but this time she comes off as far less capable. Haley's father does some things that seem so out of character, he seems unreal as well. Because the book tries to maintain a light edge, when Haley solves the mystery, the resolution seems extremely dark. What she finds underwater repulsed me and seemed out of place with the rest of the book. Aiken also leaves a lot of unanswered questions in this entry; I was a bit disappointed. Here's hoping she solves the identity crisis with the entry due in August.
Humor, cozy romance, and mystery in one!.......2006-06-27
There's nothing like a dead body to upset the color schemes of a room. Interior designer, Haley Farrell, almost tripped over the corpse while she was making plans to redesign a ritzy Georgian mansion. After the police are called, everyone is treated as a suspect, which gives Haley a terrible feeling of "been there, done that."
Fans of this series will remember the quirky, but lovable interior designer from a previous murder investigation in which she was jailed for a short time. In this book, Haley has a bad case of déjà vu as she stumbles over her second dead body. Although it doesn't appear she will be falsely arrested this time, she still feels an urgency to find the true killer. Since the prime suspect is a man who may be stealing her heart, she needs to find out the truth before it's too late.
A delicious dash of humor and some cozy romantic tension fill these pages with fun. The mystery element is well done and includes a terrific cast of characters. The clues and motivation for the murder are slowly revealed, giving readers a chance to guess the killer's identity. Setting the story within the framework of interior designing is an unusual touch that provides some clever angles.
Yet, at the heart of the story is Haley Farrell. Readers will love her because she needs to be loved. Her past includes some serious heartbreak, which is skillfully masked by her offbeat outlook and creative flair. Although it isn't necessary to have read the previous book, it will certainly be an added bonus to have done so. Decorating Schemes takes interior designing to a whole new level! - Joyce Handzo, Christian Book Previews.com
Haley Has Guts But Maybe Not Common Sense.......2006-04-28
Haley Farrell reappears in Decorating Schemes. Her debut was in Design On A Crime. The thing about Haley is that she has this crazy habit of walking in on dead bodies. And even though sleuths like Angela Lansbury and Sherlock Holmes seem to react to dead bodies as if it is no big thing, these creepy discoveries hit Haley hard and begin to unravel her world. Why? Because she has been a victim to violence herself. She has only recently begun to get a grip on her life again, and now it is beginning to spin out of control. Unresolved issues of the past haunt her still. And the only way to piece her life together again is to search for the answers behind this latest crime. She must discover who killed this teen girl, and she must try to find the missing baby before it is too late.
Her rivalry and attraction for Dutch and her crazy wanna-be sleuth neighbor provide humorous moments that give us a break from the delicious suspense.
The ending is great as she takes a foolish but daring risk to try to find the missing evidence.
I sometimes thought Haley was a flakey character because of some of the things she said to Dutch, but that just seemed to make her character more human.
The only thing I missed in this book is that Dutch and Haley never proclaimed their love or shared a kiss. But I am hoping that they will in the next book of the series. I am eagerly waiting for the new book to be released.

Customer Reviews:
Choose another book........2002-12-16
There are so many books on interior decoration it can be difficult to choose among them. This book makes it easy. Just say no.
Pluses:
None that I can see.
Minuses:
I do not think the photos in this book save it. I think that the photos are outdated, meaning, they have ugly decorating schemes by way of the 80s, and we are not talking cool retro here. For a book that is suppose to instruct you on color, they sure choose some horrible color combinations.
Recommendation: Don't bother wasting your time with this book.
Better Sources (in no particular order):
All these books have beautiful photos.
1) Think Color by Tricia Guild - good for inspiration. The book shows a very bold use of color.
2) Color Your Home Beautiful: Ideas and Solutions - has a variety of well-chosen color combinaions in a variety of styles, dozens of color swatches, useful tips, and quotes from designers.
3) Color in Your Home by Evelegh - mostly for those of you who like modern country and/or feminine (but not overdone) color schemes. Plus, one of the best primers on how to use color.
4) The Color Design File by Geddes-Brown - mostly for those of you who like Loft and/or Modern style. Covers the basics, but few useful written tips for design junkies. Very personal writing style.
Lovely photos.......2002-01-22
Lovely photos of beautifully decorated rooms with lovely colours. Not much information about how to achieve these looks with colour boards - no ideas about how to generate inspiration. Just a pretty book if that's what you want. It's a decent price so if you want pretty then this is what you'll get.
A great place to start.........2000-02-04
So many of us paid no attention in art class to learning and understanding the color wheel, but then it goes much further than that. The book helps you choose your color scheme correctly and assist you in identifying your desire for the warm, cool, contrasting or harmonious color choices. Help and suggestions are provided for the use of textures and how to paint to make your room look wider, larger, higher or even smaller. Much more info is provided than listed. A great investment at a minimal cost.
It's just not my kind of style........2000-01-12
If you're looking to learn how to get ten or fifteen different patterns and colors to work together in one room, and don't mind it if guests ask to wear sunglasses when they visit, then this book is for you. If not, or if you're prone to dizzy spells, pass. In truth, it's just not my kind of style.
An inexpensive book with a wealth of information.......1999-09-15
This is a very useful book. It breaks down the sometimes overwhelming process of choosing colors with clear and helpful instructions. I also appreciated the emphasis on working with what you have, since not all of us can buy all new furniture. For the price, this book is well worth the $$$!!
