You might argue that there's no point to this English-language edition of a Russian book, because only the most feverish Russian monarchist could take seriously, as a political issue, the question of whether the last Tsar's heir survived the Bolshevik massacre at Ekaterinburg. But this is a bit like saying that it doesn't matter how Amelia Earhart died: a mystery is a mystery, each with its own special claims on our attention. We know that Cheka thugs buried two fewer bodies than they fired at, and forensic evidence shows that if those two got away, they were almost certainly Nicholas's two youngest children, Anastasia and Alexei. There have been many Alexei pretenders in Russia, but none with so well-documented a claim as the one presented (a little breathlessly) here, on behalf of the schoolteacher Vasily Filatov, who died in 1984. Computerized facial matching says that he must be Alexei, and there is an enormous amount of other circumstantial evidence. Intriguing ... as, in a rubber-necking sort of way, is the forensically detailed reconstruction of what happened on the murderous night of July 16 to 17, 1918. But note that the relevant genetic information about Filatov has not been disclosed. Many experts, using just the methods emphasized here, were convinced beyond doubt that Anna Anderson must have been Alexei's sister Anastasia ... until DNA samples showed up. So caveat lector. What really drives this book is the series of grainy, haunting images of Filatov: was he just a peasant turned teacher, or did those deep, inscrutable eyes, which do look so very, very like the eyes of the young tsarevitch, hide for six decades a terrible story about crawling away from a pile of corpses? --Richard Farr
Book Description
The Russian Romanov dynasty came to an abrupt end on the night of July 17, 1918, when the imperial family was executed by the Bolsheviks. Or did it? Compelling new evidence reveals that Tsarevich Alexei, the fourteen year-old son of Nicholas II and heir to the Russian throne, may have escaped the bloodshed and been adopted by a local family in a nearby village.
Meticulously researched and documented, The Escape of Alexei details how Bolshevik soldiers bungled the execution, leading to confusion and chaos during the shooting. Young Alexei was merely wounded and unconscious when he was loaded onto the back of a truck with corpses of his murdered family and driven to the secret burial site. Falling out of the truck en route and left for dead, he was found by sympathetic soldiers who attended to the young hemophiliac's wounds and helped him escape, introducing him into a peasant family where he grew up under the name of Vasily Filatov.
The world of Russia's heir to the throne turned upside down. Vasily Filatov became an apprentice shoemaker, and eventually a high school geography and history teacher. He married, had children, and told his family the story of the Tsarevich's escape in the third person, as historical narrative. he never explained how, as a village teacher living under the oppressive silence and censorship of the Soviet Union, he was fluent in several foreign languages, had an in-depth knowledge of the private life of the Romanov family, and an uncanny grasp of the details surrounding the 1918 execution. With the advent of perestroika in the 1980's, the Soviet archives were finally opened to the public and, to his family's amazement, many of the incredible stories that Vasily Filatov had told his with and children were revealed to the world as historical fact.
In this startling volume, three well-respected scientists provide a convincing, thoroughly documented account of how such an extraordinary escape was possible, and how the executioners managed to cover up the fact that the body of the heir to the throne was missing. Drawing on official records and documents from Russian archive, the grisly personal accounts of soldiers who took part in the execution, and utilizing the latest scientific and forensic technology, the authors offer evidence that Alexei Romanov and Vasily Filatov were on and the same.
Filatov died in 1988. But his widow and children provide intimate reminiscences that bring this astonishing tale to life. And 101 black-and-white personal photographs reproduced throughout the text demonstrate the remarkable physical resemblances between members of the Romanov and Filatov families.

Nice, but not a match.......2006-03-06
It all boils down to this: there is no way that the little boy and the man in the front cover (or in any of the other pictures) are the same person. Alexei's eyebrows tend to be very square, yet Vasily's are drooping down. Age may change appearance, but there is the "essence of the person" and these two don't match. The rest of the story is interesting, especially the history, but the argument is not airtight or even water-tight. There are other explanations. As for the writing, the book tends to drag on at times, but overall it is entertaining reading.
entertaining read but very implausible.......2004-11-06
Although this book does an admirable job of piecing together a convincing argument that Tsarevich Alexei survived from circumstantial evidence, it will not convince anyone who knows anything about Russian history. Facial structure alone is no match for DNA analysis and simple facts. For my part, I didn't think that the picture of Filitov matched the picture of Alexei at all. Disregarding that, however, this book's conclusion is highly improbable. Multiple Romanov executioners have stated that one of them kicked the tsarevich in the head, and then Chekist Yakov Yurovsky shot Alexei three times point blank in the ear. Perhaps the authors do not believe this, but there is no chance anyone, let alone a hemophiliac, could survive that. The authors contend that Alexei was only seriously wounded, not dead, when he and his family were put into the truck and driven off to be buried, and that Alexei then fell out of the truck and escaped. Even if this is true, he would have bled to death in hours. Medical treatments were simply not available at that time to treat even minor bleeding. So while these authors provide the most believable explanation regarding the possible survival of Romanov family members, it is not believable enough to make this book worth buying.
Not convinced.......2004-06-18
I am a sucker for all things Romanov, and haven't read anything about the Russian Royal Family in a year or two. So I was anxious to start The Escape of Alexei by Vadim Petrov, Igor Lysenko and Georgy Egorov. Those looking to this book for a Romanov-fix won't find it here.
The premise that someone could have survived the Romanov massacre in Ekaterinburg in July 1918 is a tempting one. It gained even more momentum when two bodies turned up missing when the remains of the Royal Family were found in 1978. The group chosen to kill the Romanovs was a disorganized bunch, and the scene of the murder was complete chaos. But the theory that Vasily Filatov was actually the tsarevich Alexei is a laughable one.
First and foremost, there has been no DNA testing, and the authors give us lame excuses why this has not been done. We've already been duped by Anna Anderson, who was proven by DNA to be an impostor after her death. Second, the fact that a hemophiliac could live to the ripe old age of 83 stretches the imagination-especially without medical intervention. The book does have good photos, but the young Alexei looks nothing like Filatov. There are many statements made by Filatov's family, but just because Filatov loved the celebrate New Years' and birthdays, read poetry, or played classical music doesn't prove he was Alexei. Filatov also didn't seem to pass on much concrete information about growing up as the tsarevich. There are just too many gaps in the story, and too much lacking here.
The book itself is tedious at times-especially the background information at the beginning. The body of the book is only 176 pages, and much of it is repetition. And the 26 page appendix is filled with worthless information.
So, for true Romanov aficionados, I suggest you pass on The Escape of Alexei and pick up something a little more worthwhile.
Not very persuasive..........2003-11-05
I don't suggest this book at all. It was not very persuasive and in one of the pictures, one Grand Duchess is misidentified! You'd think their "brother" would know who is was! It seems completely made up.
Time Well Spent...Doing Something Else.......2002-06-11
This book is absolute rubbish! Don't even waste your money on it. You'd do better reading The Cat in the Hat rather than this. For any Romanov fan, this book is a must-a must throw in the trash. I don't know why people still insist that Aleksey survived Ekaterinburg. Just drop it. He didn't survive. Anastasiya didn't survive. Maria didn't survive. None of them survived! They most likely just burned the two "missing" bodies and scattered the ashes around the site...

Book Description
No one can deny that the world is in trouble. Tragedy stalks our streets. Violence and bloodshed fill the news. How do we explain so much chaos? Is there any hope for peace in our time? Dr. David Jeremiah's dramatic narrative on the Book of Revelation answers these and many more challenging questions, by unraveling the imagery and explaining the significance of the events described in the last book of the Bible. Within its pages are the hope and encouragement we need to lift us from the gloom of present events to the promise of a brilliant future.
Customer Reviews:
God's final victory.......2007-06-27
Escape the night is a book that takes some of the mystery out of the book of Revelation. It of course parallels the scripture but helps the reader understand Gods ultimate plan for the world. You should read the book of Revelation but if you are struggling, this work by Dr. David Jeremiah will be of great help!
Escape The Coming Night.......2007-01-04
I got so much from this book that I ordered it for a 90 year old Christian friend. She tells me that it is the best book on prophecy that she has ever read and she keeps going back to it.
Nonacademic, Storytelling Approach to Explain Book of Revelation...........2006-08-18
Dr. Jeremiah in this book, as in his Turning Point television broadcast, uses anecdoctes in explaining scriptural truth, in this case the book of Revelation. Even though Jeremiah is right on theologically, his story-telling style might be frustrating for readers who want to get straight to the verses, word study, context, and just a more academic approach to understanding Revelation. On the other hand, people who enjoy Bible-based fiction or those who just don't want to strain their brain with study, might appreciate being introduced to Revelation through this book. If you like this book, I'd recommend Jeremiah's HANDWRITING ON THE WALL, which is a similar style commentary on the Old Testament book of Daniel, and which would actually be helpful to read first, since some of Revelation is based on Daniel. For those wanting a more academic approach to Revelation, I recommend Ryrie's more academic REVELATION as accessible to the beginner, and still more detailed would be the commentaries of Walvoord, Robert Thomas, or even Newell. All of these, like Jeremiah, hold to the conservative, evangelical "pre-trib, pre-mil" endtimes view that the rapture will take place before ("pre") a 7-year tribulation before a literal millial (i.e., 1000 years) reign of Messiah on Earth.
"Right up there with 'Dragons, Grasshoppers, & Frogs' as best in class!".......2005-12-18
While not every word of the tape series in contained in the book, this book is nevertheless one of the best on Revelation. Until I read "Dragons, Grasshoppers, & Frogs", I thought this was the easiest commentary on the book. But "Dragons" is specifically written for teens and newbies, and is quite a bit more practical and better organized.
Jeremiah is premillennial and pretribulational. If you are not of that persuasion, you will be really disappointed--not to mention confused. I am, so I wasn't.
Highly recommended.
A Companion to the Book of Revelation.......2005-10-09
A companion to the Book of Revelation, ESCAPE THE COMING NIGHT, takes much of the guess-work out of interpreting one of the most difficult books in the Bible. His easy-reading, yet didactic, writing style makes David Jeremiah one of today's most popular experts on prophecy. This book is anything but discouraging and full of doom; on the contrary, it is full of hope for those who understand its message. J. Lawyer

"Intricate . . . Intelligent and menacing." The Boston Globe
By the bestselling author of "Degree of Guilt," an inescapable tale of suspense, scandal, and shock too terrifying to put aside as it draws you into its vortex of unforgettable characters and shattering events.
Peter Carey is the son of privilege -- and an heir to terror. Poised on the brink of power over a mighty family dynasty, he is also the victim of a recurring nightmare that suddenly becomes all too real. The twisted force that had claimed his parents many years before now stalks him too. But the key to his survival lies locked deep in Peter's own mind. And he must discover it before the final night closes in. . .
Customer Reviews:
UNUSUAL STYLISH THRILLER.......2003-02-17
This is my first Patterson book and overall I find it to be a very well-written, if complex, and stylish thriller. The novel opens in the early 1950's and we meet the Carey family, impossibly hard-hearted father John; brothers Charles and Phillip; the self-centered, somewhat demented Allie; and the charming little boy, Peter, who grows up to be the focal point of the novel. The first section has a lot of information in it, and though sometimes hard to digest or keep the many plot mechanizations in context, it sets a very sad and lethal plot for the remainder of the book.
Grown up Peter, having amnesia after the accident that claims his parents' lives, now must face the sale of his father's company and fend off some mysterious and deadly pursuers.
What makes this book work so well is Patterson's handling of the psyche of Peter, and the difficult time he has trusting people. Several key characters are introduced including his girlfriend, Noelle; the crazed killer Martin; two psychiatrists, one a longtime friend of his father; and Ruth Levy, the mistress of his deceased father and also the sister of his psychiatrist.
The plot thickens, secrets are hidden and revealed, and the novel ends in a blazing finish that is more than satisfactory.
Not by any means a brilliant classic, "Escape the Night" is a well-written study in suspense and terror.
RECOMMENDED.
NOT HIS BEST BY ANY MEANS.......2001-12-30
THREE GENERATIONS ARE INVOLVED IN A FAMILY OWNED PUBLISHING HOUSE. FROM JOHN CAREY WHO KEEPS HIS TWO SONS IN CONFLICT RE WHO WILL INHERIT THE BUSINESS (JOHN OR PHILIP) TO GRANDSON PETER WE LIVE THRU THEIR QUARRELS AND PLOTS RIGHT UP TO THE END. BY GIVING CHARLES 51% OF THE FIRM. JOHN SETS PHILIP INTO A DEEP PLOT TO OBTAIN PETER'S 51% SHARE. AFTER A FATAL ACCIDENT TO CHARLES, PHILIP IS TRUSTEE FOR PETER UNTIL HE REACHES AGE 30 YRS. ALL SORTS OF CREEPY CHARACTERS ARE INVOLVED WITH PHIL TO KEEP PETER FROM REACHING 30. PETER AND HIS WIFE-TO-BE GO THRU ALL SORTS OF HELL AND DAMNATION TO SURVIVE BUT PETER'S WORST ENEMY IS THE AMNESIA AND NIGHTMARES HE HAS HAD SINCE THE ACCIDENT WHEN HE WAS 5 YRS. OLD.THERE ARE SO MANY CHARACTERS AND CONVERSATIONS GOING ON JUST ON ONE PAGE THAT IT BECOMES DIFFICULT TOUNDERSTAND EACH PERSON'S AGENDA AND THE ROLE THEY PLAY IN A COMPLICATEDPLOT. BLACKMAIL, CIA, HUAC ARE ALL INVOLVED. THE END OF THE NOVEL DOESN'T SATISFY THE READER BECAUSE THE BOOK IS JUST TOO LONG AND DETAILED, AND DRAWN OUT UNTIL YOU FEEL LIKE TOSSING IT. BUT OVERALL IT RATES A 31/2 T0 4 STAR READ. I JUST HOPE HIS NEXT BOOK IS BETTER WHICH FOR ME IS "EYES OF A CHILD" WRITTEN 1O YRS. LATER.IF YOU WANT TO START READING THE BOOKS BY THIS FABULOUS WRITER, DON'T START WITH THIS ONE!
I'm surprised at all the negative reviews.................2001-04-25
I truly enjoyed the book and believed it to be one of his better books. I liked how there was rich character development and how the story was not so similar to his other books. The father/son relationships in the book really touched me. Its an interesting and tragic tale of love, betrayal and redemption.
A chore to plod thru........2000-08-06
I have enjoyed RNP's legal thrillers and looked forward to this one. However, my disappointment matches that of the other reviewers.
I had to assign myself fifty pages a day to complete this one. In a word it was a task. Confusing, way too dark, no sympathetic characters, boring and tedious.
Mr. Patterson is capable of much better, so I kept reading hoping for the enjoyment to begin...it never happened for me. I was just relieved to finish.
Someone once told me that "life is too short for a bad book." I think he had this book in mind.
Two Stars Only for Ending.......2000-04-22
This book had an interesting and complicated plot but the writing was often confusing and, in my opinion did not flow. The ending was exciting but to read 270 slow pages before it grabs you is not worth the time. I have read 5 other novels by this author that I really enjoyed. This one is definitely the weakest.

The Swastika has been replaced by the Hammer and Sickle, the soldiers by secret police, but a life of daily oppression and fear remains. Inspired by the memory of Joseph Schumacher, his widow forms a contentious coalition to sneak six disabled young people over the Berlin Wall, out of Communist East Germany, and on to either freedom or capture.

A Heart Wrenching Story!.......2004-09-07
Even though World War II has come to an end, little has changed in Berlin. While the Swastika has been replaced by the Hammer and Sickle, and soldiers by secret police, life of oppression and fear remains.
When Mady Schumacher learns of the location of the six disabled orphans her now deceased husband, Josef, had cared for, Mady and a long-time friend, Konlon, dream up an elaborate plan to break the kids out of the mental institution they have been placed in. After they rescue the children, they hope to smuggle them over the Berlin Wall and eventually take them to America. Unfortunately, before they can even get the kids out the institution, things start to go wrong. Will what follows be a blessing or a curse?
ABOVE ALL EARTHLY POWERS is a heart wrenching story about the struggles which residents of East Berlin faced behind the Berlin Wall. The characters in the story are very well developed, instantly drawing the reader in. You become acquainted and fall in love with blind `Tomcat' and follow him around as he is able to escape the mental institution and find his friends, tell them where he and the other five have been hidden, and then his return back to the institution to wait for `the rescue'.
Even though ABOVE ALL EARTHLY POWERS is book three in the Songs of the Night series, it easily stands alone. Readers might want to pick up the first two books While Mortals Sleep and His Watchful Eye just to find out what happened prior to this story though. While the Berlin Wall was in existence since before I was born, I do remember the day it came down. In Grand Rapids, Michigan, they have a portion of the wall on display, and it was awesome to be able to touch a huge piece of history like that. Having experienced the sheer magnitude of the `small piece' of the wall that the museum had, it had to be a daunting job to dream up escape attempts and then try to carry them out with armed guards ready to shoot without warning.

Good start to a historical fiction series........2004-09-04
This is the first book in the Riverboat Adventures series. This series is about a young girl who becomes involved in the Underground Railroad while living on her father's Mississippi River steamboat in the 1850s.
Since her mother's death four years ago, twelve-year-old Libby Norstad has lived with her aunt and uncle in their Chicago mansion. In that time, she has seen her father only rarely, because he is a riverboat captain on the Mississippi River. Now that Libby is older, her father has decided that she will live with him on his riverboat, the Christina. The year is 1857, and arguments over slavery are beginning to divide America. Libby has never had to think much about slavery, but she has always assumed that slaves are well-treated by their masters, and are better off that way than trying to make it on their own. But her new life aboard the Christina challenges her beliefs, when she discovers that Caleb, the ship's cabin boy, is active in the Underground Railroad. Caleb exposes Libby to the horrors of slavery, and she is forced to confront her beliefs about right and wrong for the first time in her life.
This book was well-written and full of interesting historical details, and Libby's character transformation was believable. I would recommend it to readers who are interested in this time period in history, and I look forward to reading the rest of the books in the series.
An Exciting Book!.......2002-02-14
I loved this book! Libby, Caleb, and Jordan feel like friends. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. And I didn't know this stuff about the Underground Railroad. Thank you, Mrs. Johnson, for writing such a good book.
Another Exciting Adventure.......2001-11-14
12-year-old Libby Norstad had lived with her aunt for several years because of her mother's death, hardly seeing her father, captain of the steamboat Christina, and leading a sheltered life. But things change quickly, and Libby moves onto the steamboat with her father! She meets Caleb, the cabin boy, who seems different to Libby. He's a part of the Underground Railroad, helping slaves reach freedom, and along with Captain Norstad, he teaches Libby some important lessons about being free. In fact, Caleb and Captain Norstad take a fugitive slave, Jordan, on board to help him find his family. Unfortunately, the Christina is being followed by Jordan's former owner, Riggs. Libby and Caleb need to keep Jordan hidden from him, but is it possible with such a crafty man?

The movie, The Great Escape, describes his experiences and those of his fellow prisoners in the most gripping and thrilling manner. The author made more than 12 escape attempts including his participation in The Great Escape, where 50 of the 76 escapees were executed in cold blood on Hitler's orders.
On recapture, James was sent to the infamous Sachsenhausen concentration camp where, undeterred, he tunneled out. That was not the end of his remarkable story.
Moonless Night has strong claim to be the finest escape story of the Second World War.

The Great Escape in Broader Context.......2006-05-30
The author, Jimmy James, provides many lucid details dealing with his experiences before, during, and after the Great Escape. James discusses his experiences at Barth, Stalag Luft III, Szubin, and Sachsenhausen. (He later visited the site of Stalag Luft III in 2004, 60 years after the Great Escape. At that time, he also observed the forensic dig that amazingly unearthed remnants of the tunnel Dick). James provides tables at the end of the book which include various statistics on the three tunnels dug at the time of the Great Escape (tons of sand removed per tunnel and per interval of time, numbers of pieces of lumber used for shoring per tunnel, etc.).
James provides a summary of events that occurred on the night of the Great Escape itself. After he left tunnel Harry during the night of the Great Escape, James trekked to Tschiebsdorf (now Trzebow), took a train to Boberrohrsdorf (or Bober-Rohrsdorf; now Siedlecin), and then was caught just north of the German-Czech border. Most of his comrades were murdered by the Germans, in open violation of the Geneva Convention.
James' description of what went on in Sachsenhausen concentration camp is graphic. Unlike modern treatments that tend to emphasize the experiences of Jews, James provides a balanced account of the many different victims of the Germans and the unspeakable cruelties that they were forced to endure. James makes it clear that Poles and other Slavs, religious and political dissidents, etc., were treated every bit as bad as the Jews. Inmates of western European nationalities, by contrast, were treated considerably better. James mentions numerous details seldom encountered in English-language publications. These include the dressing up of some of the corpses of Sachsenhausen inmates in Polish army uniforms for a faked Polish provocatory "attack" on German territory (along the German-Polish border) used to justify the ensuing German conquest of Poland in September 1939, the murder of 17,000 Polish POWs at Sachsenhausen in March 1940, and the suicide of inmate Jakob Djugashvili (son of Joseph Stalin) following news of the Katyn massacre of Polish POWs (correctly blamed on the Soviets).
Best WW2 Escape Book I've Read.......2004-07-06
The review title just about says it all. Not only did Jimmy James spend almost 5 years as a POW, but he escaped countless times. After being one of the "lucky" 23 recaptured from The Great Escape not to be murdered by the Nazis, he was sent to Sachsenhausen concentration camp, and he ESCAPED from there!!!
An amazing true story!
