Love it! Why Am I Not Surprised!!! :o).......2007-09-20
I bought this unabridged audio because I could relate to the topic. I belong to many beading classes... mainly because I love the days I can bond with other women via the beading. It's a wonderful experience, so I had a feeling I would love this book. However, I had no idea that this read would capture my heart and soul the way it did. Each character was so rich in their identity and I loved the way that they were given voice by Carrington McDuffie. The author Kate Jacobs must be so excited to know that her book is soon to be a movie starring Julia Roberts!!! How exciting is that! She will be perfect for the lead role of Georgia Walker, a strong single mother and owner of the knit store "Walker & Daughter" ...... I wonder who will play the other incredible cast of characters. I just loved them all and was so sad when the story ended. Truly this is one of my favorite books this year. I highly recommend it. I'd also like to recommend "The Knitting Circle" ... another truly fabulous book! 5 starz JMHO //(*_*)\\
Big disappointment.......2007-09-14
I was so excited about this book I bought 3 copies - one for myself, one for my friend who's preparing to open a yarn shop and start a knitting club, and the other for our knitting mentor. I read the book as soon as it arrived, and now I'm almost embarrased to give it to my friends. I was really disappointed in the quality of the writing and felt even I could do a much better job. The characters were shallow, the wording was awkward in many places, and lots of things didn't make much sense. For example, it was not believable that Georgia would keep James' letters for all those years and not read them. She would have thrown them away! The chapter about the crazy film student who was looking for Julia Roberts (what a coincedence, since she just happens to star in the upcoming movie) was strange and added nothing to the story. And what was the purpose of the use of the f-word? It didn't fit the characters. I also figured out the ending way too soon. Plus, knitting had very little to do with the book. When in Scotland, around all those sheep, for instance, there wasn't even a mention of the great yarns that were available!!! You'd think a yarn shop owner would spend time checking out the yarn and how it was produced. Tragic missed opportunity to add something authentic to a book about knitting. This novel was too predictable throughout. Save your money and wait for the movie. Hopefully it will be better.
Inviting, Cozy Book .......2007-08-07
I enjoyed this book so much that I'm rather taken aback at how divided the reviews are. I found the book to be like a blanket, warm and cozy and something you want to curl up in. I don't knit, but the references to the wool and the process made it seem very inviting.
The characters were diverse - of varying ages, walks of life and economic circumstances - and written so vividly that I began to cast them as if for a TV show. Overall, the book is about love and friendship and finding ourselves, with the store and knitting being the central theme that brings most of the characters together.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and was sad to see it come to a conclusion, ending my connection with the colorful and enjoyable characters. Like some of the other reviewers, I would have liked a different ending because I'd grown attached to everyone, but I did see it coming and the author did tie it all together well.
My biggest disappointment in the book was discovering it's Kate Jacob's first and now I'll have to wait for the next one.

Got better as it went on.......2007-07-28
I'm giving this two stars: averaging one star for the first half and three for the second half. Through the first half of the book I kept thinking, "how are they going to make a movie of this?" It was just all these seperate women and their individual stories and none seemed to have anything to do with the others. They did all come together at the end, though. The first thing that really got my attention was in Darwin's story. She was talking about how she was a good girl, but she didn't want to be a good girl. She said that she didn't want to burn money for her dead anscestors on Chinese New Year. Having grown up in Asia, I can tell you no one burns money or anything else during Chinese New Yea (which lasts for 15 days). Money is burned for dead anscestors at the Feast of the Hungry Ghosts. I just hate it when authors write about something they don't know about and don't bother to check it out. She also mentioned about not wanting to go the Sunday School and skipping church. Anyone going to church likely isn't burning money for dead anscestors in any case. The part about Julia Roberts was weird, too. If the lady was so certain Ms. Roberts was going to show up at that particular yarn store on that particular, why not just hang around by the front door? If someone bought and returned the same item all day long at my store (if I had one) I'd put a stop to it. And why did she stagger in slurring something about "roooobbbeerrrs" at the end of the day? Was she drunk? Overheated? Dehydrated? Deranged? That was just kind of left dangling. I also didn't understand about the letters. Georgia had gotten two letters from James that she never opened. Yet he was sending checks to help with Dakota's expenses and she opened all those. How is it she opened the later envelopes that contained checks but not the first two where he said he wanted to get back together? I wondered, too, about the evening gowns Georgia knitted. If she was capable of doing that, why did she wait to be asked? She could have knitted a few and sold them to some boutiques. For someone who managed to be a single parent and run her own business and do a good job at both, she seemed to be short-sighted about breaking into the fashion business. Peri got right down to business with her knitted purses and had them in store windows in no time. And my final question was about the trip to Scotland. Georgia decided Dakota could miss a little school since it was "just seventh grade". I thought they'd only be gone a week. When it was revealed they spend a month in Scotland, I figured she'd just missed the last week of school. Then they came back and Dakota had to go back to school. It doesn't matter what grade you're in, missing a month means you're going to have repeat the grade. No one can miss that much school. They'd probably withdraw your enrollment.
I wasn't too impressed with the character who tricked her date into getting her pregnant. That was just uncalled for. Who conducts themselves like that? I also could have done without the bad language. These are all college educated women, surely they didn't have to resort to four-letter words to get their points across.
It could have been a good book, but there were so many thing that just made no sense to me. I think the movie might be better, though. If they just hit the highlights it should make a good story.

My husband and I had been married for 23 years and were Christians. We were feeling like we had grown apart and needed something to bring us back together. This book did it for us! Each night we read our pages together and answered, truthfully, the questions at the end. It opened a whole new chapter in our marriage and we have recommended it to all our friends. Devotional reading at night in our home used to be tiring. As a belated wedding gift we began to read this book together in place of some other books. We both enjoy the daily messages and the stories at the beginning of each week. Highly recommend this book. Each reading is 1-4 pages max. Helps in situations were your spouse tends to fall asleep.

FRIDAY NIGHT LETDOWN.......2007-09-26
I came into this one with high expectations, especially since I lived in Odessa for a short time in 1986 on a job assignment. Talk about a bleak and desolate place...But I was truly amazed at the hubub around the Panthers. I think that was Gary Gaines first year. I remember the dead-red build up before the Lee game. Saw it all firsthand as a very temporary transplant.
The book was a dissapointment. Okay, but not great. Maybe he should have just written a book about Boobie. He didn't talk nearly enough about the games, for instance. Probably half the book is devoted to off the field issues. Racism, favortism, school system, ect. The rest is Boobie, Boobie, Boobie. Could have been so much better. A letdown beacause it came off as some kind of expose piece.

Ok book nothing outstanding. The writing I'd give about a 3. Pretty much college sophomore level. Negatively biased against almost everything generally considered good. A real hatchet job on just about everyone. The author bashes teachers, schools, colleges, parents, parenting, fans, churches, the school board, the coaches, he even spends a chapter bashing Bush #1 and the Republicans. He throws in some gratuitous scatalogical jokes about Bush. He goes out of his way to paint everyone in as poor a moral light as possible. In one case he beats up on a character but to obtain contrast later needs to paint that character in a good light so that he can paint someone else in a poor light.
I read the whole book in a few days at the beach. It's just an average book - not so bad that you put it down but nothing special. I can see the appeal especially to liberal boomer white America. It's the other white American that's bad in this book. You know the one that's not you or me. I figure the author must have won the Pulitzer by sullying some other sacred cow because honestly his writing just isn't that good. The metaphors he uses were unoriginal and were strangely forced in several cases. Read it if you got nothing better to do but I would think you should find better books on the subject of high school football.

Back in Texas the Permian Panthers was in for a good football season, maybe even take state. With the star running back Boobie hurt, can they still pull it together? The answer to that and all the others is in the text of H.G. Bissinger's book Friday Night Lights. Friday Night Lights is a story about a football team playing their way to the state championship. My favorite part of the book would have to be the last game at state where they were getting completely pounded on but at the very end the Panthers were making an amazing come back. I think this is my favorite part because it is just so glorious and suspenseful and I just know exactly what that feels like. It seems that one big message just keeps coming up. It seems that the book is trying to tell you that you should never give up. To never let anyone hold you back, never let them stop you in believe what you strongly believe, just always try, just never give up. Friday Night Lights was pretty much an all around good book. Every part was exciting and really made you not want to atop reading. The only part that was kind of bad, but more of just a bummer, was the ending but only because I didn't wand it to end that way. But I guess it had more of meaning ending that way. I think all of you out there that like a good sports book that you should definitely go and pick Friday Night Lights up.

a fabulous book about the Permian Panthers of Odessa, TX and the MOJO magic that permeates thoughout the city. H.G. Bissinger has found the heartbeat of America in high school football as he writes in fascinating detail the story of the 1988 Permian Panthers. It could be any high school across American as the tradition, passion and politics of local high school football reign over a city that would seemingly have no identity without it's high scool football team. A wonderful book.

A Great New Take on Vampires.......2007-07-09
As an Egyptologist, Christine Day recognizes the authenticity of the breathtaking statues and artifacts exhibited at the Royal Palace hotel and casino. A Wow Book!.......2007-07-05
I couldn't put this book down. The use of ancient Egyptian mythology in a vampire story was really different and exotic. It had just the right amount of world building for me. I don't want to get bogged down in a million details. That's not why I read romance. I loved the hero and heroine of Night Life and the idea that it was their destiny to be together. I guess we all like different stories when we read: this was one my personal favorites so far in 2007.

I bought this book based on the AAR review, they are usually reliable. Well this one was the exception that proves the rule, as other people have mentioned here, there are literally NO explanations provided for anything that happens. Egyptians just die, happen to wake up 'vampire' and immortal, and take it from there. There are no explanations for practically anything that happen in the book, but there are pages and pages devoted to the oil the hero made for her,or embalming procedures (which was actually a good bit) and useless other tidbits. If the author actually sat down and tried to infuse some logic into her next story, it might be readable. This one was not.
Good paranormal/alternate reality authors ( JR ward, Nalini Singh, Sherrilyn Kenyon, to name a few) are so popular not only because of their excellent prose styles, but also because they devote a lot of time and thought to interesting and thorough world building...this author would do well to take her cues from them.
Not enough talent to attack such an ambitious plot.......2007-06-30
The reviewer who wrote that this book is filled with plotholes is absolutely right. I've never seen a less cohesive plotline. One dimensional and poorly thought out characterization (especially of supporting characters), bad dialogue, and nonsensical storytelling outweighs bonus points for a promising premise, an interesting take on vampirism and quasi-New Kingdom history. The book really falls apart after the main characters fall into bed together as if the author realized she had nothing more to say and hastily tied all the plot threads together haphazardly. In this way we are left with several key questions that remain unresolved and undermine the entire structure of the book . . .
How did any of these ancient Egyptians turned into vampires? What was the point of the bizarre elixir Adrian drinks in the forward if everyone he knew as Pharoah turned into a vampire without drinking the same thing? What is the Soul Gatherer and how does it affect our main characters (other than as a super convenient way to scare off the rather pathetic villain)? Then there is the question of just who is Christine to Adrian? Did they have a past life together? Is she some Egyptian goddess, is she really She-Who-Must-Be-Feared?
Throughout the novel we are told time and again that Adrian senses great evil but once the villain (irrationally) reveals himself, he is disarmed quite easily and even calls out to his mama as he is destroyed. Even if I could get around the plotholes, I can't forgive such a useless villain. There was no sense of urgency, no sense of peril. I found myself rolling my eyes instead of enjoying the suspense.
This novel truly had potential but needed someone of Susan Squires' or Meljean Brooks' caliber to pull it off. I think Elizabeth Guest bit off more than she could chew with this book. She wanted epic but produced cheesy. I know she plans this book to be the first in a series. It makes me shudder.

Good film shooting book........2007-03-22
I liked the book but I was expecting more from the author in covering Digital SLR (DSLR) cameras as well as film. The book has spectacular shots of low/no light photography but all using film. I have a DSLR and I have been learning a lot about photography specifically digital picture taking and wanted to focus on that aspect. Much of the information on the beginning of the book covers equipment and only a small part covers information that could be used for digital cameras.
The book features great shots and I will try to reproduce some of the shots. I also think that is well written and was a joy to read.
Great Book by a Great Photographer and Author.......2007-02-15
Lee Frost is my favorite photographic author. Unlike some other photographers who decide to write a book, Mr. Frost also has writing talent. He never seems to be talking down to his readers, as some seem to do. Instead, his books give you that "I'm no one special, but I'll tell you what I've learned so you don't make the same mistakes" type of feeling. I particularly like the fact that he includes pictures where he made a mistake, something we know every pro does but usually won't admit to. This book gives you everything you need to know to shoot great pictures in low light, using film or digital. He doesn't go into digital much, but the techniques are the same for both, with the exception of having to bracket exposures. Who needs to do that when you can see the results right away? But if you're shooting film, you need this book. The pictures are fantastic and clearly illustrate the author's point, even the mistakes. If you haven't bought a camera yet, read this book first!!! You may decide, given the beauty of film pictures and the availability of excellent film cameras for very little money, that digital photography isn't for you. A great book, either way you decide to go.
Outstanding Lessons in "Difficult" Photography.......2007-01-29
This is a truly excellent how-to on capturing those difficult shots in low light environments, both outdoors and indoors. I am a professional scenic and wildlife photographer and I learned MUCH -- and gained considerable confidence, too -- from reading and studying this book. I read it very slowly, over many months, and tried the techniques and principles Lee Frost describes in my own work as I progressed through the chapters. The results were outstanding, leaving me with far more confidence and skill in managing difficult shots. If anything, the book covers too much, with a long lead-in on types of cameras and lenses, etc., and the final sections on specific subject types tend to be repetitive of the central text, itself. (But, then, we learn by repetition and Mr. Frost is a good teacher.) Still, the CORE information in the book is extremely helpful and valuable. It's on my top shelf for photographic technique and will remain there!

I found the material very helpful and the concepts straight forward with plenty of example photo. The only downside is that the book is dated and tends to talk about digital photography as some futuristic, yet un-refined, technology.

Huge, menacing men with thick beards and elabor- ate moustaches, the battle-hardened Cossack soldiers wore dark gray coats over baggy trousers, which they tucked into their black riding boots. Beneath the brims of their foreign-shaped helmets, their inscrutable faces were browned and leathery from life in the saddle, their slightly slanted eyes cool and efficient. It was said they were descended from the Huns.
One sniffed the air, trying to scent her out, while the others glanced around, murmuring questions and replies to each other in a low, rapid tongue that she could not decipher. She swallowed hard as they split up to continue searching for her in pairs. The first two continued onward while the second turned their swift, rugged horses around and headed back toward the wide, lamplit thoroughfare, whatever it was called. Oxford Street . . . Piccadilly? Becky wasn’t sure. When they had gone, she nigh collapsed with exhausted relief, leaning all her weight against the locked door behind her.

I can call it a bodice ripper because right there on page 343 it says "He tore her lovely bodice in his haste to get his hand on her..." Hehe...
The plot has been detailed elsewhere so I'll just say what I liked about this book. First the sex was really steamy and explicit. More, I think, than the other books in the series. These two were so hot for each other, right from the beginning. They couldn't keep their hands off each other!
But the part I really liked was Alec's sweet seduction of Becky. He was such a pro. Standing under an awning on a rainy street, he said all those sweet words to her, just the right things to make her melt. And then he fed her and bathed her and kissed away her sorrows. Alec is so charming! What a sweet hero he is.
These two had great chemistry. Maybe I was just in the right mood for it today, but I really loved this book.
20 Nights of Sin.......2007-03-16
If you're looking for a scorching hot historical with a good plot, this is it. I absolutely loved Alec. I liked this one almost as much as "Lord of Fire"-- which is saying a lot. This entire series by Foley is great and this is one of the best ones.
Lord Alec Knight (the youngest of the Knight brothers) is known as Captain of the London Rakehells and certainly lives up to his reputation. He's rather disgusted with himself after getting deep into debt from gambling and having to resort to working off his debt in a rich baroness's bed for a year. Lady Campion pays off his debts in exchange for his "services". As a result, he terribly hurts and loses the only woman who has ever truly loved him (Lizzie Carlisle--see Devil Takes a Bride). His self-esteem is at an all-time low when he discovers a bedraggled young woman asleep on his friend's doorstep. His overeager friends believe she's a been sent over for their party by the local brothel and they manage to scare her off.
Alec decides to follow her and, while still believing her to be a prostitute, senses that she's in trouble and takes her to his home, where he offers her a hot bath and then orders her dinner from one of the best restaurants in town and tells her she can stay with him for a while if she wants. She allows him to go on thinking her a prostitute.
Alec resolves not to touch her until he's sure she's o.k. and then seduces her in the tenderest way possible. Becky is surprised by his kindness, but runs off without a word in the morning, not wanting to endanger him because of the men that are hunting her down. The next morning, Alec is stunned to find Becky gone without a word and his bed bloodied. Apparently the "prostitute" was a virgin! He runs off after her and manages to track her down, saving her from the Cossacks who are pursuing her to bring her back to her evil, murdering cousin Prince Mikhail who has threatened to rape her to keep her in line. Feeling responsible for ruining her, Alec asks Becky to marry him, but she refuses, not wanting someone to marry her solely out of duty.
After Becky confides her plight, Alec makes it his mission to help her and goes on a quest to raise enough money to buy back her home from Mikhail through gambling winnings as well as convince Becky to marry him. He's stunned at the girl's courage and perseverance in the face of adversity. He needs a woman who needs him and finds that taking care of Becky reforms him. He confides his worst secret (Lady Campion) and rather than being apalled and rejecting him, Becky understands and accepts him, saying he handled it the best way he could at the time to avoid taking advantage of others and tells him he should forgive himself.
Alec the Rake regains his self-esteem and is redeemed though taking care of Becky and rescues her from death in a dramatic climactic scene where Mikhail tries to kill them both. As a result, the rake is reformed and becomes a true heroic figure. This transformation is believably accomplished by Foley.
This is a scorching hot romance and the sex scenes are not for the faint of heart. Rather than one night of sin, 20 night of sin would have been a better title. Alec resolves not to have "sex" with Becky again until she agrees to marry him, but, true to his rake nature, he's quite inventive in finding ways for them to pleasure each other mutually and simultaneously until she agrees.
Overall, a very satisfying and sensual romance, with good character development and an interesting, suspenseful plot.

Becky Ward is on the run for her life. Her cousin, Prince Mikhail Kurkov, murdered an agent of the Czar of Russia and Becky witnessed it. Becky makes her way to London to try and find the Duke of Westland to turn her cousin in, but Prince Kurkov beats her there and makes an unsuccessful attempt to capture her. To make matters worse, her grandfather's death has made Prince Kurkov her guardian, which means he controls her life and also owns the only home she's ever known.
Lord Alec Knight and his three friends have just arrived at one of his friends' homes where they find Becky asleep on the portico. Assuming she is a prostitute, they wake her up and try to coax her into the house, but she fights them off and runs away. Alec chases after her and talks her into going with him to his apartments. They have a glorious night together but when Alec wakes up, Becky has already escaped. While he is rushing to get dressed, he notices bloodstains on the bathrobe Becky wore and realizes that she was a virgin.
Alec talks her into trusting him with her story and offers to help her. They devise a plan to win, through gambling, enough money to buy back Becky's home from Prince Kurkov. They also need to find evidence of Mikhail's treachery before they can go to Westland with her story.
Admittedly, I was prepared to not like this book. I had just finished reading Devil Takes A Bride where I found Alec to be a self-indulgent brat who was trying to come between Devlin and Elizabeth. However, he redeems himself in this book. I don't like that the tale takes pot shots at Elizabeth, portraying her as someone not quite strong enough to handle Alec, but I suppose this is an attempt to convince us, the audience, of Becky's courage in loving Alec despite his past.
In my opinion, though, it was not necessary to disparage Elizabeth for that reason. I, for one, was already convinced, in Devil Takes A Bride, that Alec and Elizabeth were not suited for each other. It was already clear that Elizabeth, until she met Devlin, had fallen in love with an image of who she thought Alec was. Likewise, Alec wanted Elizabeth around because he thought he needed her, but certainly not because he loved her. There was really no need to compare Becky to Elizabeth. Both are equally strong heroines with unique characteristics of their own.
One Night of Sin is sumptuous and erotic. The storyline, however, is a bit predictable and I found it lacking. The magic and sizzle that other Gaelen Foley works have, such as in The Duke, is missing in this one.
Minor Discrepency.......2006-06-26
For those who have already read the book, Alex tells Becky that Jacinda was two when their mother left, but Jacinda's year of birth was in 1798 and Georgiana died in 1799. SO there was no way Jacinda was two, if anything she wasn't even one yet, because Georgiana supposedly left and was transporting her aristocrat's friends children from france for a while before she got caught and was executed.
I found another one of these slight "errors" in "His wicked Kiss".

about the novel, I was looking forward to reading about Alex since I really didn't like him at all in Devil takes a bride. I wanted to see how he was going to redeem himself and boy am I proud of our little brother, fighting all those Cossacks all by himself and all.
I was just as proud of him as his brothers when they came barging in to assist him and found that he had taken care of everything and he was ENGAGED!!!!
Like I mentioned in one of my other reviews, when I read any of Gaelen Foley's books I always feel like I'm watching a movie as opposed to reading the book since everything is so detailed.

wow. this book is hot. and i don't mean just a bit. i loved it, but i would definatley want everyone who is looking to read this that you may get turned on. really turned on. so anyway, i would recommend this to anyone who is just getting into romance or who has read hundreds just like me.

SEIZE THE NIGHT really let me down. I was looking forward to reading the story of my favorite wacky Deveraux girl but feel cheated, namely because of the characters from former books who can't leave the past alone and the horrible tragedy that befalls one of my beloved men.
The story goes: Tabitha Deveraux, twin of Amanda from 'Night Pleasures,' is a self-made vampire hunter, delightfully eccentric but still tough. She stabs Valerius-- a Roman DH whom everyone hates because, well, he's Roman-- takes him back to her house to heal... and they fight, they misunderstand each other, yet they find one another appealing. I do like the relationship between Val and Tab, but there are so many mundane details that fill up the story that I begin to forget that this is supposed to be a kick-butt romance and start putting the book down to clear my head. Then some former threat from the past sneaks up, but all the while Tab and Val make out and fight with other Hunters because they hate Val's guts for something he didn't even do. I GET IT ALREADY! THEY HATE HIM! CAN WE PLEASE MOVE ON?!?!
And Nick... WHY?!?!? I was so heartbroken for him, and then what happens to him later on is so darn evil that I cry. I must admit that Ms. Kenyon did a good job with that part, even if it was infuriating. This book will do that to you- you don't know whether to grimace in tolerance or begrudge the fact that it has some okay moments.

For those of you who have been living in the Dark Ages, or perhaps under a rock, and haven't a clue of Ms. Kenyon's Dark-Hunter series, there are a few vocabulary terms you must become familiar with before reading this review.
Dark-Hunter: Dark-Hunters are created from ancient warriors-but not just any warrior-only those who have been wronged and are dying, due to an act of treachery and betrayal. At this time, Artemis approaches the dying warrior and offers them a pact-a one-time Act of Vengeance against the party who has wronged them. These soulless beings, neither Apollites, Daimons, nor humans, are the only thing that stands between humanity and the creatures who seek to destroy them.
Apollites & Daimons: Apollites are direct descendants of the god Apollo, who has the unfortunate luck of being cursed when they killed his twenty-seven year old mistress, Ryssa, and child. Even worse, Apollites are forced to die a horrible, painful death over a twenty-four hour period when they are twenty-seven themselvs. Daimons, of course, are the unearthly creatures that Apollites transform into during their twenty-seventh birthday celebration.
Now that you have the basic downs, you can fully enjoy SEIZE THE NIGHT. The latest in Ms. Kenyon's series, this book centers around Valerius Magnus, the good-looking, quick-tempered Dark-Hunter who had the good fortune of being born to a Roman Senator, serving as a Roman General, and conquering cities throughout the countries, too numerous to name. He's also the poor, unfortunate soul who has the bad misfortune of being betrayed, losing the woman he loves, and becomes a soulless Dark-Hunter.
I could say that Valerius doesn't play well with others, but that would be an understatement! He refuses to embrace those who once rejected him, and he's not quite sure how he ended up in New Orleans, staked by one Tabitha Devereaux, a woman who somehow happens to be almost as proficient at hunting and destroying Daimons as he is. But, alas, the gods aren't happy enough just to force Val into working with the Dark-Hunters he has tried to avoid at all costs-instead, fate has decided that his mortal enemy should be married to Tabitha's twin sister. He'd probably laugh, but he lost that ability sometime around 160 BC.
I love this series. Actually, I love every book that Ms. Kenyon writes. But with SEIZE THE NIGHT, she's managed to capture the true emotion of Valerius's pain, his betrayal, and his resolve to stay emotionally uninvolved with Tabitha. Tabitha herself is no humble society debutante-she's worked for years to put her psychic talents to good use, by protecting those she loves, and her city from the destruction of the inhuman beings who wish to destroy it.
However, this time, an evil force is determined to destroy everything that Tabitha holds dear, and if it can take Valerius down in the process, so much the better. The storyline is non-stop action, the heat and emotion between Val and Tabitha is kept at a perfect pitch. Once again, the Dark-Hunters reign supreme-or do they? There's only one way to find out, and that's by picking up your very own copy of SEIZE THE NIGHT.

This is one of the best books in the series because so many things happen. Amanda's twin sister, Tabitha, is the heroine in this story and a sassy character she is! She meets Dark-hunter, Valerius while out fighting Daimons and from that point forward they are nearly inseparable. The hero and heroine truly show that opposites attract. There is a good romance, but the action and suspense parts of this book are even better. There is a lot of new information about Ash and some resolution of past conflict. I enjoyed it!

Of course, there are going to be some previous characters coming into play with Sherrilyn Kenyon's seventh main Dark Hunter novel. Tabitha Devereaux, the twin sister to Amanda, finds her way with her spirit and unforgettable spunk into the hearts of beloved Dark Hunter readers. Tabitha, the vampire hunter of the night, comes back only this time to realize her life is deeply threatened and it is not just by the Diamons that walk the street but by her uncharacteristic love interest who threatens the only security she has ever had: her family.
Valerius "Val" Magnus, a gloriously Roman Dark Hunter, a Dark Hunter who has excruciating familiar relations with Zarek and a crucifying clarity of what and who Kyrian of Thrace once was. He will have to face his past along with both Zarek and Kyrian, ultimately one will not survive.

This was a phenomenal book. Dr. Michael J. Collins wrote an account of his four years as a resident at the Mayo Clinic which reads like a novel. It is at times laugh-out loud funny, other times devastatingly sad. I didn't want the book to end, yet I couldn't put it down. I highly recommend this book. I wish I hadn't read it yet so I could read it again. I hope he writes another one.
Doctors Are People, Too.......2007-01-12
Hot Lights, Cold Steel is an intriguing account of the life of a doctor. Written by orthopedic surgeon Michael J. Collins, it is a fast-paced reminiscence of his four years as a resident at the prestigious Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Michigan. Throughout the book, Collins connects the reader to many of his important cases. Told on such a relatable basis, the reader experiences the achievement, thrill, and sorrow that accompany his countless orthopedic cases.
Collins discusses his medical career, describing many orthopedic surgeries in great detail. There is sufficient detail that people with weak stomachs should be cautioned against reading it. He not only discusses each procedural aspect of his work, he also describes the emotions that accompany each victory and especially, each defeat. A major theme throughout the novel is similar to a theme in Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter: humans make mistakes, but nobody is perfect and people learn to forgive. Collins struggles with this reality, recognizing that when doctors make mistakes, people die.
Collins's book isn't all about his career in the hospital, however. He also tells about his ever-growing family and what his being a doctor means for them. Although he relates many pleasurable moments with his family and fellow resident friends, Collins also discusses some of the suffering his family must face until he becomes an attending physician. He especially focuses on the many hardships his wife Patti must endure until he can build up his own practice. Addressing a common misconception that all doctors are wealthy, Collins tells of their poverty, calculating his salary at $2.50 per hour, describing countless "junker" cars, and telling of their near-empty bank account. He is forced to "moonlight" at another hospital on nearly all of his free weekends to supplement his income, which means sacrificing valuable time with his wife and children. Collins enlightens the reader by recounting episodes of his life not only as a doctor, but as husband and father, making the point that doctors are people, too.
For anyone who is considering a career as an orthopedic surgeon, or any medical profession, this book is a must-read. By providing a unique look at the life of a doctor, Collins describes in detail the personal and technical aspects of every surgery as well as his life as a doctor in general. He makes clear just what being a doctor is about, vocationally and personally. Just like an awesome episode of `House', Collins's book will keep the reader interested for hours at a time.

My 89 year old mother enjoyed it, as did my husband and I.

"Hot Lights, Cold Steel," by Michael J. Collins, is a fascinating account of the making of an orthopedic surgeon. Collins starts his residency at Rochester's prestigious Mayo Clinic with deep feelings of insecurity. In fact, he dispiritedly dubs himself "the dullest scalpel in the drawer." Unlike his fellow residents, Collins, an Irish Catholic from Chicago's West Side, did not do multiple rotations in orthopedics while in medical school, conducted no research, and wrote no scientific papers. Instead, he worked on a loading dock to make ends meet. To his credit, however, Collins has energy, intelligence, ambition, and perseverance.
At first, Collins tries to stay in the background and keep his mouth shut, hoping that his superiors will overlook his obvious ignorance. When he reviews a chart with the notation "Patient is TTWB," he wonders what this acronym means. Could it be "three times without bleeding," or "terribly thirsty without beer?" Collins disconsolately predicts that he will shortly be drummed out of the residency program for "practicing medicine without a brain." The author's self-deprecating humor is delightful and it helps to offset the tragic cases he recounts.
The author explores the grueling nature of a surgeon's training: the sleepless nights, snatched meals, long absences from loved ones, and fear of hurting a patient. Because he is constantly short of money, Collins and his wife, Patti, drive a series of broken down junkers, and as his family grows, he must moonlight in order to pay the bills. The compensations are the exhilaration of helping a patient regain his or her health, the excitement of performing an operation for the first time, and the deep friendships that Collins forms with his fellow orthopods. Although it terrifies him to know that, if he slips up, he could kill or cripple someone, as time goes on, he gradually learns to accept the fact that everyone makes mistakes and terrible things do happen. He cannot let this possibility destroy his confidence.
The most memorable aspects of the book are the medical anecdotes: a boy's leg is mangled by a tractor and the doctor must decide whether to amputate, a beautiful woman has a rare cancer that requires mutilating surgery, and on a lighter note, a forty-year old man comes into the emergency room with a fishhook up his nose. Sometimes Collins succeeds, and other times, he fails. However, his four years as a resident teach him the immense value and satisfaction of his chosen profession and the importance of treating every patient with respect and compassion.

The thing I loved most about this book is that it is REAL and it is HONEST. It's not exactly glamourous...and that attributes to the book's success.
Dr. Collins doesn't write about earning lots of money and driving the best cars and going to country clubs. He writes about being a resident, just out of medical school, slightly clueless, working 100 hours a week at $2.50 an hour. Not glamourous at all.
But then he writes about the things he does have - a loving wife, many wonderful children, and how some of his fellow residents are his best friends.
It's all very touching and real...I would reccomend this to any people who think they might want to be doctors. It shows you that you're going to have to work very hard...but it will all be worth it in the end. That's an important lesson anyone entering the medical world needs to know.

Didn't like this one as much as the first two. It moved to fast from meeting to sleeping. Maybe she was ready to be finished with the brothers.

Fans of Ms. Jeffries' ROYAL BROTHERHOOD SERIES have been waiting for the story of Gavin Byrne, one of three half-brothers who are the sons of England's Prince Regent. These half-noble brothers have gotten into all types of scrapes, known countrywide as notorious rogues-in their personal lives as much as their professional ones. The series began with Alexander Black, Earl of Iversley, in the book In the Prince's Bed (Royal Brotherhood). Second brother Marcus North, Viscount Draker, had his story told in To Pleasure a Prince (Royal Brotherhood). Now comes Gavin Byrne's chance to tell his story with ONE NIGHT WITH A PRINCE.
Gavin, the well-known-and sometimes despised-owner of the Blue Swan Men's club, a gaming house, sets out to exact revenge. As young, royal, rash princes seem inclined to do, Gavin takes advantage of the opportunity to enlist the aid of a woman. Lady Christabel, Marchioness of Haversham, is a widow on a mission to rescue letters that could destroy both her father and Prince Regent. She agrees to do the unthinkable-pose as Gavin's mistress in order to save her family's reputation, and that of the Prince.
The plot of ONE NIGHT WITH A PRINCE gets complicated-Gavin, for example, was the one who came to collect Christabel's late husband's debt, and got shot at for his efforts. Christabel wants the secret letters to keep her father from being sent to the gallows-Gavin wants them because he hates his biological father, Prince Regent, and resents the way he turned his mother away.
When Alexander and Marcus, Gavin's half-brothers, urge him to go into alliance with Christabel, he's wary. Once he decides to do so, his main goal-aside from ruining his father-is to get the proper Lady Christabel into his bed. This heroine is no fainting spinster, however, and the tables are soon turned. When all is said and done, which will Gavin Byrne find more important-the destruction of the man he's hated all of his life, or the safety of the woman he's come to love?
ONE NIGHT WITH A PRINCE is historical romance at its best. Engaging characters, attention to historical detail, and humorous dialogue will keep you reading long into the night. I'm sorry to see this trilogy end, but I'm sure Ms. Jeffries has something else planned for our reading pleasure in the near future.

All of the Royal Brotherhood Series are great and this book is a great ending to that series. It is hilarious and hott and I can't wait to read it again. I couldn't stop laughing and couldn't put the book down. Words can not express how great this book is and again like the other two books before this one I would recommend this to anyone.

A respectable young widow, Christabel, agrees to pretend to be the new mistress of a gaming club owner in order to attend a house party hosted by a man who obtained some letters that now put her family's reputation in danger. Her good-for-nothing gambling husband stole the letters from her and sold them to cover gaming debts before his untimely death. Christabel is totally inexperienced in society and still quite innocent having never learned about physical pleasure from her husband. Needless to say her reputation will be seriously damaged by the role she decides to take on, but she hopes to steal back the letters and save her father from a very bad outcome.
Gavin, the notorious gaming club owner, reluctantly agrees to the challenge because he is offered a significant reward. He then finds himself extremely attracted to the feisty widow who had once shot at him when he came to collect on her husband's gambling debts! He takes it upon himself to supply Christabel with gowns and train her so that she appears convincingly as his mistress and is able to play whist well enough to help him win the week long tournament with his fast set of friends. This is also the perfect opportunity to try to seduce the inexperienced widow and he uses every charm and wile he has to entice her in his bed and become his mistress in fact.
The scandalous house party is a dangerous environment for Christabel who needs Gavin's tutelage and protection, but in turn her strong attraction to Gavin makes her increasingly susceptible to the masterful seduction of this "Prince of Sin". Those attending the party are a group of cynical, jaded and often lewd characters, dedicated to winning the money pot at all costs. Many are downright devious and manipulative individuals who play nasty psychological games with each other to unsettle their gaming opponents or rivals for affection. The party host, Lord Stokely, is by far the most devious of them all, ruthlessly determined to seduce Christabel and steal her from Gavin whether she returns his affections or not.
Christabel and Gavin attempt to search for the letters while all else is going on full tilt. In addition to the card game, the plot revolves around several outrageous wagers and related negotiations, with quite unexpected outcomes and many tense moments leading up to each resolution. On top of that, Christabel is confronted with several ex-mistresses of Gavin's, some of whom are willing to pull all sorts of underhanded stunts to embarrass Christabel or undermine her relationship with Gavin. This all results in a fast-paced, intricate story with lots of fabulous twists and turns.
Christabel finds herself in an environment where she can barely keep her head above water, but somehow her wit and feisty bravery get her through the worst of the booby traps, and Gavin is increasingly drawn to her honest and incorruptible nature. Much to his surprise, Gavin finds himself very jealous of the lewd attentions of his friends/cohorts towards his fresh supposed mistress. This is a totally new experience for him - he believes himself to be so jaded as to be a "man without a soul" and all his many prior mistresses were cynical and dissipated women only interested in his money, gifts and sexual prowess. As the game continues Gavin learns enough to realize that the letters can give him the much desired opportunity to avenge a lifetime of wrong done to himself and his mother, but would destroy Christabel and her father.
The interactions between Gavin and Christabel are marvelous. There are wonderful scenes where Gavin discovers that somehow Christabel is able to get him to admit his new and increasing feelings for her in the throes of passion. This makes the love scenes superb -- Gavin the master seducer and legendary lover is less and less in control. Especially hilarious is how several times Gavin just can't believe the words that came out of his mouth right after he says them. I suppose that is part of what made the book so delightful for me -- the hero and heroine constantly surprising and shocking themselves and each other as the stakes get higher and higher in this marvelous naughty and dangerous whirlwind romance.
This book even had me looking up the rules for whist! I look forward to reading it again.
