Book Description
The Great Bust Ahead is a concise, straight to the point book laying out in stark terms the case for a coming depression of historically unprecedented magnitude. It will be much worse than the 1930s, beginning perhaps as early as 2009-2010, and last up to thirteen years. Centered on hard fact demographics, the book boldly claims that the data presented are so irrefutable, that the outcome predicted by the book is equally as irrefutable. The compelling proof presented accurately accounts for the detailed trend of the economy from 1920 to today (something never before accomplished), and projects out to 2030 in detail. The book is very easy to read and understand, and requires no prior knowledge of economics. Down to earth things the average person can do to prepare for what is coming are covered. A summary of the catastrophic domestic social and international consequences is offered.
2006 Update: In late 2002 when this book was published, in addition to the massive depression beginning towards the end of the decade, it forecast:
1. The economy, as reflected by the DJIA, would resume its upwards march in late 2002 or 2003.
This is exactly what happened.
2. The DJIA would have a snap-back to 13,000 to 14,000 and the FTSE to 6,000 to 7,000 by 2004, but delayed possibly by wars/politics/terrorism/scandals.
This is exactly what has happened. Although still delayed from the full snap-back for the reasons described, the DJIA is now over 12,000 and the FTSE is over 6,000.
3. The inflation adjusted DJIA returns from 2003 to 2012 would average 7% to 8%. So far, with the delayed full snap-back, inflation adjusted DJIA returns have averaged a more modest 4%, as would be expected.
4. Interest rates would increase from 2003 onwards.
This is exactly what has happened.
Customer Reviews:
It is just an indicator!.......2007-09-12
Everyone is forgetting that the book is talking about a correlated indicator for the DJIA. There are many things that drive an economy and make things happen like the weakening dollar, monstrous deficits, the Federal Reserve, cheap credit and the housing market bubble, peak oil, etc. These are some of the things that move the DJIA, NOT just demographics. The fact that the 45-54 age group correlates to the DJIA is very interesting and CAN be used to predict what MAY happen to the DJIA in the long term. Demographics of the 45-54 age groups are a strong force pushing the markets, but not the only thing. Even the author says that some things like "the New Deal, the pill and the NASDAQ" affect the correlation with this indicator. The politicians and Wall Street are not going to lie down and let this monstrous depression happen without a fight. They my not win the War, but where the DJIA goes in the future has not been case in stone. The future highs and lows of the DJIA are still unpredictable.
The book is a high school treatise on this relationship and to the economically ignorant is a real eye opener. Most economists know about this force, but the key is what to do about it and when. The author's advice to get out of the markets by 2010 is silly at best. We are now in September of 2007 and the housing market bubble burst is probably the beginning of the down turn of the markets. Wait until 2010 to protect your assets and you will far less assets to protect. The author's advice to sell your home and rent and plow your money into bonds is simplistic at best. Investing in gold, foreign currencies, TIPS etc. to protect your assets are other stratigies that are not addressed. We are all speeding towards this economic depression, but the answers to when it will happen and what to do about protecting your assets is NOT even close to being addressed by this book. The book is $8.95 and you get what you pay for, "a wakeup call for the economically ignorant". Read the book and move onto a more advanced book for a better in depth discussion on economics and your money like "The Second Great Depression (Paperback) by Warren Brussee (Author)". I do agree that a lot of pain is ahead for the world.
Not Bad But Too Short and Too Extreme.......2007-08-22
Let me start by saying that this is a pretty good book for the price and if you don't know what is going on in the economy. The problem is that the book has very limited data to back up the predictions. If you are going to make huge predictions you had better justify it with a lot of credible data that has been referenced. As well, some of the predictions are just too extreme. However, all of these shortcomings aside, the author provides a nice short treatment on what will most likely occur; just not to the extent he has presented in my opinion. Of course, opinions are like debt in America - everyone has their own!
A much more useful book in my opinion is "Cashing in on the Real Estate Bubble." It not only shows you many different ways to profit from the current bubble collapse, but it also shows a lot of detail about the economy and how to profit from America's overall credit bubble. Cashing in on the Real Estate Bubble
Interesting theory but..........2007-07-09
This book is short and easy to read. The author has an interesting concept that the stock market follows the number of Americans at their peak buying age. His graphs and explanations on modifying factors make everything fit. I agree that some correction of our economy (inflation, recession, or worse) is likely in the future, but I feel other factors (energy issues, our national debt, terrorism, etc.) will come into play that he has not taken into account. I also don't agree with his investment suggestions and feel they may be reckless.
If you're concerned about possible bad times ahead, this is one book that may helpful, but I better liked the reasoning and proposals on what to do in Stephen Leeb's book The Coming Economic Collapse: How You Can Thrive When Oil Costs 200 Dollars a Barrel.
Excellent Read.......2007-05-14
Pros:
1. Brief: to the point, no fluff book(let)
2. Logical: Numbers support theory all along
3. Simple: Easy to understand
4. Value: Could save your shirt
Cons:
1. May sound too negative
2. May not consider all factors into forecasting
Pretty interesting read.......2007-05-12
This book and the argument that it lays out is pretty eye-opening. It shows you, through logical argument, how the demographics of our country will impact our coming future economic health. With these baby-boomers greying and falling from their peak spending years, our country will experience a downshift that will really challenge our concept of prosperity... A must read!

January 2005 - Better resources now available !.......2005-01-14
This book is light reading and lacks knowledge sharing of glycemic foods. I was not looking for a Dr.'s book on food and recipes but this book was not fullfilling for me. It encourages the use of the 'bad' fats. It does encourage low glycemic foods and low sugar foods. What I am trying to share is that I bought two books at the same time, the other by "GALLOP" - Living the G.I. Diet, and found this one to be greatly lacking by comparison.
Just one person's opinion - All the best
Terrific asset to your cookbook collection!.......2003-04-16
My husband started on SugarBusters almost a year ago, after my boss lost 50 lbs on it. We bought the SugarBusters book and also the cookbook. Never used any of the recipes in either. Instead, I was cooking only a meat and several veggies for each meal, and we were getting a little burned out. THEN, we found this in a bookstore! Everything we've tried has been terrific, not to mention easy. Hubby has lost 55lbs, thanks to SugarBusters and regular exercise. We're eating better tasting food than we ever have, and it is healthy, to boot! The shopping guide is extremely helpful and more comprehensive than the one put out by SugarBusters. I have since given at least 5 copies of this as gifts, along with Sugar Bust for Life Part II.
Easy one-dish meals.......2002-08-10

Excellent resource for the Sugar Busters lifestyle!.......2001-11-27
Sugar Bust for Life! is based on the diet principles from the Sugar Busters Cut Sugar to Trim Fat book. Ellen Brenan the author of Sugar Bust for Life! was the consultant and publisher of the original Sugar Buster's book. The book Sugar Busters describes a healthy way of eating to gain vitality and lose weight. Sugar Bust For Life! expands on the book with a ton of information to make the Sugar Buster way of life simple!
The Sugar Bust for Life! book includes over 400 recipes, menus, an extensive supermarket shopping list with brand names, a glycemic list of foods, detailed information on the program, low fat modifications and even a list of acceptable red wines!

Tomatoes and Wine, Ketchup and Alfredo are among the sauces. Breakfast dishes, salads and salad dressings, grilling and marinades, side dishes and vegetarian fare are also included. The entrees are extensive ranging from Baked Chicken Supreme to Lasagne to Steak Diane. Over 400 recipes and all made with easy to find ingredients and simple to prepare!
The Brennan's include 2 weeks worth of meal plans and suggestions on how to maximize your weight loss. They also have a wonderful section of brand names to look for in your supermarket to help make, selecting healthy choices easy. And they include a list of hidden sugars to beware of.
Another welcome section to the book is a list of acceptable wines you can drink in moderation, while following the Sugar Busters program. Theodore Brennan is the co-author of the book and owner of Brennan's restaurant of New Orleans. His brother James, a wine expert and connoisseur, selected the wines. Brennan's restaurant has won numerous awards, for its fine wine cellars. The wines selected are the best choices that are acceptable within the Sugar Busters guidelines.
The book Sugar Bust for Life! was formerly called Sugar Less for Life! Unfortunately (...)is selling these two books together as a set when they are the same book! The Brennan's do have a another book out called Sugar Bust for Life with the Brennan's Part II. It's also available through (...). I just received a copy, and like its sister book, it looks wonderful!
Sugar Bust for Life! With the Brennan's is certainly a delicious easy way to lose weight and get healthy!
Excellent!.......2001-02-05
This is an excellent cookbook. I started the Sugar Buster's diet two months ago and lost 18 lbs. The recipes are delicious! I am so excited I dedicated a website to Sugar Busters and included this cookbook.
Book Description
On the surface, Adam Resnick was your typical guy next door, a friendly, charismatic father of two. But he spent the first decade of his adult life winning and losing fortunes playing blackjack and betting on sports, sometimes winning and losing millions in mere hours–until, in one frenzied night, he received a phone call that was his moment of reckoning, and that sounded the death knell for his lifelong addiction.
Bust is a white–knuckled story of the highs and lows of a world–class gambler. Introduced to gambling at the age of six, Resnick was a whiz kid who was winning tens of thousands by his teens. A successful businessman, he won and lost millions at the gambling tables throughout his twenties–and wrote more than 130 bad checks to cover his losses. Resnick's high–rolling lifestyle opened the door to the parties 'n' celebrities universe of Las Vegas, while at the same time introducing him to the underbelly of bookies and mobsters. He was surrounded by a host of enablers who lent him cash–often at exorbitant rates that enriched their pockets at his expense. And, finally, he found what seemed like the answer to his prayers: An insider at a family–owned Chicago bank who gave him an open line of credit. It all came to a head one fateful morning when a phone call informed him that he had 24 hours to deposit $3,000,000 into a bank account. Cornered by sure financial ruin, a prison sentence, and worse, Resnick drove to a casino in Hammond, Indiana, with a million dollars in cash . . . won up to $8 million in one night . . . and then lost it all before he left the table. In one frenzied night–captured on casino videotape–Resnick brought down that bank, and won himself a jail sentence for bank fraud.
Adam Resnick's story is both moving and timely. Coming when the multi–billion–dollar gambling industry is bigger than ever and celebrity poker tournaments are the rage, this stinging indictment of gambling's dark side and portrait of a lifelong addict will draw readers who want to know more about what it is to be a high roller–the risks, the exhilaration, and the eventual collapse

Good Reading - Interesting True Story.......2007-04-05
This book is a very well-written book that provides good entertaining reading while attempting to at the same time to reach out to people and family members in the need of help (to show them how ugly things can get when gambling takes over your life).
Hey "EyeInTheSky"? Do you have a life? Or do you just visit these postings daily and try to ridicule them out of angst, bitterness, and jealousy? You ridiculed Mr. Sanjay about being honest and telling it like it is; why don't you stop hiding behind your post-name and reveal your real name and insecurity as to your knowledge/involvement in Mr. Resnick's downfall?
LABEL IT FICTION.......2007-03-17
This is supposed to be a self help book or a "cautionary tale" for gamblers and addicts looking to break the pattern. This book barely discusses the underlying causes for addiction and it reads (in my opinion) as a self serving and vile vehicle for the author, Adam Resnick to brag about his exploits (business, sexual, social) while offering no redeeming value to people with real problems. I would argue that this book makes James Frey's novel (which is clearly Mr. Resnick's model for this novel) look like a masterpiece in its' factual content.
Mr. Resnick seems to have delusions of grandeur and used gambling to obtain friends, fame and wealth. All he really is is a simple conman that got caught trying to complete his latest scheme. This book is a continuance of that life long need for self importance exploiting peoples' lives to sell a few books in hopes of paying back an enormous debt to the innocent customers of a small community bank. I hope Mr. Resnick takes his long days ahead of him to think about what he's done to those that care about him because writing a book like this shows he still has not learned his lesson.
An Absolute Must Read.......2007-03-16
Far from a tale of how a group of cheeky MIT whizzes "beat" Vegas, BUST by Adam Resnick paints a far more realistic picture of the forces at play in the world of gambling that affect millions of Americans. Resnick describes gambling for what it really is - an addiction - not a pasttime, not a source of entertainment, not a source of reverie. Gambling, he writes, is an anathema, one that exploits weaknesses and deliberately promotes practices aimed at fueling this terrible addiction.
Imagine a bartender deliberately handing the keys of a vehicle to a drunk patron. Imagine a doctor injecting someone who has overdosed with another hit. This is exactly what the clean-cut so-called businessmen running the nation's most glitzy and glamorous casinos encourage their employees to do.
Much like alcohol and drugs, an addiction to gambling can destroy a brilliant mind, a wonderful family life and a promising future. Look no further than Adam Resnick, a college dropout who earned millions through legitimate business deals in healthcare, cared for a wonderful wife and two gorgeous kids and participated actively in charity, all while leading a double-life as a high-stakes Vegas high-roller.
Resnick was flown by private jet, comp-ed suites and meals at Vegas's hottest casinos where he would bet up to $25,000 per hand and lose hundreds of thousands of dollars in a night.
Casinos and bookies, Renick writes, are enablers, preying on carefully discerned weaknesses of compulsive gamblers and driving them further towards destroying themselves and ultimately their families and communities.
A series of enablers, from Vegas casino bosses to bookies to greedy businessmen eager to make high interest loans to a desperate man, spirled Resnick toward a relationship that eventually brought down a community-owned Savings and Loan institution in Chicago.
BUST is a true story, a cautionary tale told in the first person by a brilliant man once lost to addiction, now sworn to educating the public while serving time for his actions.
A must read and a must gift for anyone who might be enjoying the tempations of the casinos a bit too much. Act now. You could save a life.
WOW!.......2007-03-16
I purchased this book for a friend who is currently struggling with a serious gambling problem. The title caught my attention. My initial intention was to only skim the first few pages and before i knew it I was completely sucked in. Couldn't put it down. Absolutely positively amazing story. I'm pretty sure i will be buying a ticket to see this in the movie theater someday. A must read for anyone.
amazing read.......2007-03-16
this book was recommended by a friend. I could not put it down. literally, i stayed up all night reading it and my wife did the same. resnick is a fascinating character who does a lot of self destrructive things and is indifferent to the effect on those around him. yet he clearly has a heart of gold and a ton of charisma (it is intersting how many people live vficariously off of his antics). he tries to take responsibility and is mostly successful. he still blames others for some of his woes and his paranoia sometimes makes him think that he is more important in the scheme of things than he really is. but in the final analysis, his most destructive acts flow from his maniacal addiction to gambling. its hold on a person like this is truly spellbinding and resnick's fight to escape that life is one of the main reasons you can't help but root for him. a must read for anyone who is interested in addictive behavior and a person's efforts to pull himself out of it . the book is also filled with fascinating characters

not useful anymore.......2007-02-07
If this is the first time you've thought of or talked to anyone about real estate, it's worth a read. You get some history. If you've read any newspaper, magazine or book about real estate in the last year, you don't have to read the first 3/4 of the book. It's the same stuff over and over again. The last part suggests stock picks, buying gold and holding cash. Financial advice should probably not be taken from a journalist anyway.
If you're a contrarian, doesn't the bubble only burst when people say it's not going to burst?
smart money.......2007-01-17
Since REAL ESTATE, SP500(target 50 / 100) are heading deep south,
it is my pleasure to receive honest advice
from a seasoned journalist who has seen many ups and down
and all the bluff at market tops like todays many times over
and can give us outright advice of how to ride our boat
to a safe harbor before the perfect storm.

Advice Taken.......2006-10-05
Two years ago I purchased Mr. Rubino's book. Back then the housing bubble was a seldom-discussed topic. For me, the information and advice made absolute sense. We sold our 5 acre property in Oregon and moved to be close to the kids. We are debt-free, have money in the bank, and will rent until the insanely high house prices decline to a reasonable level. Thank you Mr. Rubino. I could not be happier that I took your timely advice!
An OK book, eye opener for mainstream investors, but old news for most financial professionals.......2006-01-03
First of all, a correction for the review from David "Pudd'nhead" Wilson. Graphing Total US Debt to US GDP shows that it was flat around 1.40 from 1955 to 1981, then exploded up to 1.85 by 1986, flat at 1.85 up to 2001, and *most ominously* has been rising steadily each year .. 1.84 in 2000, 1.90 in 2001, 1.96 in 2002, 2.01 in 2003, 2.05 in 2004.
Get your facts straight before you shoot your mouth off!
Otherwise, this book is interesting reading for most mainstream investors who are bullish on real estate given the last few years' outperformance. For most financial professionals and goldbugs, this won't be anything new and you are probably better off cosying up to something anti-fiat-money like Conquer The Crash, Financial Reckoning Day, or Tomorrow's Gold.
Enjoyed reading this book, highly recommended!.......2005-12-29
The title is slightly misleading. The book is not focused on real estate bust. It starts with introducing the idea of business cycles. Basically if something is flying high, it will eventually fall down. Then there is a nice chapter about derivatives. Most people know that an average US consumer spends more then makes, and this chapter gives an idea what makes it possible. The last few chapters have some suggestions about how to survive a coming bust, but frankly, this part is not that impressive.
The book is really easy to read. It's full of jokes, but it has solid background, so it doesn't sound light.

Healthy cooking for life.......2006-08-31
If you're looking for a guide for healthier eating and cooking, this is for you. Not only are the recipes easy and tasty, but the guidelines are informative and easy to follow. The pounds will shed without feeling hungry. The first 2 weeks were the most difficult as I cut down on all the sugar. I have more energy and it feels great to lose weight without sacrificing great tasting food!
Excellent cookbook!.......2006-07-17
If you have decided to life the Sugar Busters! lifestyle, Sugar Bust for Life! with the Brennans is a must. Both cookbooks, Part 1 and Part 2 make following this diet much easier. With so many delicious recipes to choose from, you won't get bored. All of the recipes call for common ingredients that most people will already have in their pantry, or will be very easy to find in your local grocery store. Part 2 is my favorite of the two cookbooks, though I am glad I have both.
My only complaint about the 2 cookbooks is that the authors did not include nutrition information. It would be nice to know how many calories, carbs, sugar grams, fat, and protein grams are in each serving.
Sugar Busters will be a way of life for my family from now on. Within 6 weeks of starting the "diet" my husband lost 15 pounds (really without trying too hard). He was never hungry. More importantly than the weight loss his cholesterol dropped from 281 to 202; his triglycerides dropped from a scary 1164 to 230; and his glucose dropped from 142 to 106. All within 6 weeks, and NO medication!! We hope that given a few more months, and some exercise he can get his numbers even lower.
PART II OF THE PERFECT COOKBOOK.......2003-02-02
I couldn't have been happier with the "original" Sugar Bust For Life!...With The Brennans. The minute I realized that a Part II had been published, I had to own it! These simple recipes are so delicious that when my husband and I sit down to eat dinner, we oftentimes forget we're on a diet. That is really why these books have become part of our lives. I especially recommend Part I and Part II to anyone who maintains a low-carbohydrate regime - but truly - to anyone who enjoys cooking and eating fabulous food!
Satisfied Fan.......2003-01-31
I have been following the suggestions and recipes in Sugar Bust for Life! ... with the Brennans ... with amazing, satisfying results. When I started this review, I noticed the Trussville, AL review. No where in Part II do I find a recipe for the Double Chocolate Brownie Supreme, so I went back to Part I and found the recipe there. I decided to try it again before continuing my review and it was delicious. Whatever that reader found lacking obviously has been corrected in the book. I wonder if the reviewer tried to contact the Brennans. I regret that the Trussville review may deter others from beginning a very healthy and satisfying eating lifestyle. I have found only helpful information and great recipes in both of the books, Part I and Part II. I have recently purchased Play Your Carbs Right! ... with The Brennans. This book also is a great help because it keeps me in line with carbohydrates, serving size, and includes even more simple, satisfying and delicious recipes! Thank you, Brennans
no confidence.......2003-01-25
I purchased the Sugar Bust for Life Cookbook and Companion Guide. When I attempted to try my first recipe (Double Chocolate Brownie Supreme - page 288) I discovered it filled with errors and omissions. Salt called for in directions was not mentioned in ingredient list. Cream Cheese and extracts listed in ingredients were not listed in directions. No cooking time was given. How can I have confidence in a cookbook when the first recipe I wanted to use is incorrect? In the front of the book it says that "Sir Speedy" did the typing for the book. Apparently he did it a little too speedily. I would be interested to know if there is a corrected issue available - that I don't have to purchase. It should be made available free of charge.

Book Description
In 1982, the Dow hovered below 1000. Then, the market rose and rapidly gained speed until it peaked above 11,000. Noted journalist and financial reporter Maggie Mahar has written the first book on the remarkable bull market that began in 1982 and ended just in the early 2000s. For almost two decades, a colorful cast of characters such as Abby Joseph Cohen, Mary Meeker, Henry Blodget, and Alan Greenspan came to dominate the market news.
This inside look at that 17-year cycle of growth, built upon interviews and unparalleled access to the most important analysts, market observers, and fund managers who eagerly tell the tales of excesses, presents the period with a historical perspective and explains what really happened and why.

Get a glimpse of bull and bear markets.........2007-10-10
If you haven't actually observed various bull and bear markets in your life, this is one of the books which will give you different stories of boom and bust during years from 1982 to 2004. I was not observing the markets during the technology boom of 2000, but heard lots of stories on how the technology shares plummeted after the boom period. So I started reading this book to get a feel of what happened during these periods of boom and bust, surely I was not disappointed with the efforts of author in giving the glimpse of different events.
This book has some interesting chapters, one being about how the corporates lobbied to get around revealing the cost of stock options in financial statements and to get immunity from being sued with overly optimistic projections of profits. At times this book is boring with overly descriptions of some personalities who became celebrities during the boom periods and also about some stories of individual investors. So if you haven't really experienced different cycles of boom and bust, then this book might be a good for you.
Mind-opening views of investment history.......2007-05-14
This is a very well written book about the ups and downs of the stock market. Mahar puts great investors' view points, plus convincing facts through the 20 some years of investment history. A very mind-opening and enjoyable reading. No wonder Warren Buffett recommanded it.
Insights into the market psyche.......2007-03-29
Great expose on the bulls and the bears. What really drives the markets. What happens when people get too full of themselves.
Wall St. doesn't have my best interest at heart???.......2006-04-10
This book does a great job breaking down the boom/bust cycles in the markets. From a history perspective, it is very entertaining. From a reality perspective, it is required reading for anyone investing in the markets. If you learn how people cheat or manipulate, you can sometimes avoid being manipulated or cheated in the future.
"History does not repeat, it rhymes." I forget who said that, but it is true. Learn about the boom/bust cycles and you can profit from them when they return. Understand the cycles and maybe when the music stops you wont be the only one without a chair.
If you think the people on Wall Street are your friends, if you think CNBC is giving you good advice, if you think your 401k is a safe investment, even if you think the stock market outperforms every investment over the long run, then you really should read this book.
Going against the Zebra herd on this one.......2005-12-07
Have you noticed that anyone who writes a negative review on Amazon gets dinged more frequently?? Well, I'm using one of Maggie Mahar's take-away points who wrote about Gail Dudack and Jim Grant (market contrarians at the peak of the internet boom) to say this book is a not worth buying... I can almost hear the ding'ing now.
As the title suggests, this book is mostly about the market's history between Reagan to George W. Within that space, its a narrow assimilation of 6-9 books, 4-5 market contrarian interviews, and mostly financial news articles. For example, the stock market crash of '87 is very narrowly described as a cyclical and/or over-advancement of prices and over-exhuberance by buyers. Obviously, arguments such as these support the theme of the book. However, stock market fluctuations are fantastically complex and influenced by broader economic conditions and triggers. Several interlinked elements contributing to '87 would have been helpful to learn about: the Fed strategies at that time, post-Plaza Agreement aftermath on the dollar, intricate problems from UAL failed LBO, Milken's problems with a number of restructings, why gold was down, Real Estate syndicates boom in Texas, S&L liquidity, etc. And I'm just a novice writing this from memory.
Mahar is no economist, statistician, nor trader. Her style of writing and context of her arguments are similar to that of a financial journalist -- not unlike how "Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room" was written. Moreover, her tone towards the latter half of the book turns noticeable negative as she constantly applies (dare I say "manipulates") certain events/information to support her argument that the Bull market was soooooo clearly overvaluing stocks and everyone was stupid to be caught up in the frenzy. Hind sight is 20/20. Sometimes her statistical analysis is weak. For example, on pg 318, she writes about how insider stock sales/buys are incorrigible, were almost frauds, and how the public ignored the street signs: "... from 1995 through the end of 2002, the Tribune's analysis showed that in 25% of all cases, the share price of the company in question tumbled by at least 20%-and sometimes as much as 50%- in the six months following the sale. Insiders were equally fortunate in picking their spots when buying their own companies' stock: more than half of all purchases preceded gains of more than 20%, which several well above 50%." Her use of the Tribune's 2003 Dow30 study to support her argument lacks insight and analysis: (a) 75% of all cases conversely mean that insiders were wrong to sell, (b) about half the insiders who bought were dumb, and (c) during that same period, what were company-specific fluctations (ie knowledgeable to insiders) vs. simply relative correlations to the DJIA.
If you are a casual reader interested in a chronicle of the markets, this book provides an overview of the times. However, if you are an investor with a medium-term memory, you may find that this book is not for you, as you invariably compare your recollections with her version of the chronicles; thus making this book questionable advice for the future.
In that regard, I was disappointed and could not help but to feel that this book represents not a "history" of that bull market, but rather "her history" of that bull market. A good history book should give you confidence in your education's integrity and thoroughness, particularly if you were living back then and remember things (unlike "1776").
In summary, I didn't so much disagree with the writer's points, but rather hoped that it would have been more broadly educational and analytical in order for it to be helpful as we move thru the 21st Century.
-- P.S. The above reviewer Mr. Nassim Nicholas Taleb is the author of "Fooled by Randomness" and complemented/cited by Mahar in this book. FYI.

fun for young boys - updated from old versions.......2007-05-17
My ten-year-old son eats these books up. They've all been updated since we were kids to include modern gizmos & technology today's kids find cool. Even the personalities of the Hardy Boys are more modern, yet still positive. HIGHLY recommend!
The Jamie Ennis Review.......2007-01-30
THese books are very interesting with lots of action. I am 10 years old and I love to read. I read lots of different kinds of books. My father gave me some of his old Hardy Boy books. They were boring. The new Hardy Boys are different. They are much more exciting. Take my word for it, you will like these books.
Book Description
Written with equal parts wit and wisdom, this humorous guide catalogs the shameless lies found in daily life, paying particular attention to the most common falsehood-filled occasions, such as business negotiations, job interviews, used car shopping, and confrontations with kids over alleged keg parties. The discussion covers identifying characteristics of liars, including unique gender differences, verbal slips and physical tics, and evidence of confused thinking. Sidebars called TipBits offer expert advice and cite scientific and historical facts about conning and swindling, while the conclusion explores the effectiveness of both ancient and modern technological solutions for busting liars and provides even more proven methods for detecting.

I RARELY BOTHER TO REVIEW BOOKS.......2007-04-10
....but in this case, I'm making an exception as this is an exceptionally bad piece of "literature." The jokes are lame, the illustrations are middleschool quality and the actual content is not even fit for a 24 stopover anywhere in any middle eastern country. If you're at all interested in this subject, stick to Dr. Lieberman's book and you won't be dissatisfied. I can't understand why he, of all people, would put a stamp of approval on such a waste of good paper, though.
Highly recommended........2006-12-10
You Won't Get Fooled Again: More Then 101 Brilliant Ways to Bust and Bald-Faced Liar (Even if the Liar is Lying Beside You) features a side-splitting humorous twist to its very practical list of strategies to discern how to tell when someone is lying to you. From the importance of observing "baseline" behavior (how people normally act) in order to better pick up on any telltale variations, to common body language indications of dishonesty such as fidgeting, touching the nose, or closing hands/interlocking fingers, to sardonic tips for improving one's own lying skills (such as making as little contact as possible with the target so that he/she is unaware of your own baseline behavior), You Won't Get Fooled Again! is a hilariously welcome and useful guide to honing one's personal BS detector. Highly recommended.

Give it a try before you buy.......2007-01-29
I may well be alone here, but I failed to find the author's style 'humorous and engaging.' I found it awkward and off putting. So be warned: read over a few pages and a few lame jokes before you commit your money.
Practical Retirement Advice.......2007-01-13
Important practical advice for those headed towards retirement. Boomer or Bust provides readers the information they need to financially prepare for their retirement. A clear, concise and enjoyable read.
Don't Pass This One Up!.......2007-01-02
A great, easy to understand, resouce on retirement financial planning. For baby boomers like me, who do not have a lot of free time to read, this book highlights the "Need To Know" areas to make a smooth and economically sound transition into retirement.
Essential Information Made Easy to Understand.......2006-12-21
Most Boomers are torn in so many directions they just don't have time to investigate the crucial topics covered by "Boomer or Bust", which is why they are bound to make costly mistakes either with their own planning or that of their parents. Attorney Weisman, in his down to earth manner, makes complicated material easy to follow and even fun to learn about. Readers will feel quite empowered to take control over their own situations before they find themselves having to make difficult decisions or worse; while in crisis.
Informative and entertaining.......2006-12-12
Along with being extremely informative this book is a very enjoyable read. The author has an amusing style that keeps you engaged and hungry for more. As Alan Colmes states in his endorsement above, this "is as entertaining to read as it is practical."
