Wake Me Up When It's Over.......2006-05-18
Well, if the title 'The Terror That Comes in the Night' doesn't immediately spark your interest how about that secondary subtitle, 'An Experience-Centered Study of Supernatural Assault Traditions.' Doesn't it sound like a book you'd like to have resting on your lap while riding the subway, or sitting in a busy doctor's office. I just love those weird looks people give you when they see what you're reading.
Being one of those people who have a long history of suffering from "Night Terrors" I had a personal interest in purchasing this book. I wanted to compare my own nightmarish encounters with what others had endured during those long and dreadful hours preceding dawn. For me it was a cathartic and affirming endeavor. Therapy you might say.
Since my primary attraction to this book was the first-hand accounts provided by the participants in this study, not the research or conclusions drawn by Mr. Hufford, it turned out to be a worthwhile read for me. However if you're looking for some world shattering conclusions or monumental breakthroughs you'll probably be disappointed.
An overall intriquing read for those fascinated by nightmares and the realm of dreams.
A thorough investigation of a fascinating phenomenon.......2005-01-07
There are reports from people around the world that they have wakened in the night with a sense of terror, unable to move, and aware of the presence of a frightening old hag.
David Hufford brings us a thorough investigation of this fascinating phenomenon. Hufford is Professor in the Department of Humanities at the Penn State College of Medicine (Hershey Medical Center. He has had a long-standing interest in traditional healing and parapsychology, both of which serve him will in his analysis of the old hag reports, which have not been included in much of the literature on psychic and spiritual experiences.
Hufford gathered 93 reports from students at Memorial University in Newfoundland, clarifying their experiences with a detailed questionnaire. Hufford investigates and writes with great clarity. Here are some of his conclusions:
1. The phenomena ... constitute an experience with a complex and stable pattern, which is recognizable and is distinct from other experiences.
2. This experience is found in a variety of cultural settings.
3. The pattern of the experience and its distribution appear independent of the presence of explicit cultural models.
4. The experience itself has played a significant, though not exclusive, role in the development of numerous traditions of supernatural assault.
7. The frequency with which the experience occurs is surprisingly high, with those who have had at least one recognizable attack representing 15 percent or more of the general population.
8. The state in which this experience occurs is probably best described as sleep paralysis with a particular kind of hypnagogic hallucination.
10. The contents of this experience cannot be satisfactorily explained on the basis of current know1edge.
This book does much to clarify an interesting element in the spectrum of transpersonal experiences.
Eye-opening Study.......2004-06-29
David Hufford looks at a phenomenon called "The Old Hag" in this remarkable study of folklore. The "Old Hag" consists of a belief that a person is stunned by supernatural forces and ridden by a ghost, witch, or other supernatural being in the night. He became interested in the unified way in which people described eerie nightmares that froze people with fright. Hufford discovered that the experience was shared by people who had never even met, thereby challenging the idea that "The Old Hag" was merely a folk belief passed along in an oral tradition. The book provides an excellent way to understand belief from the point of view of a person who accepts it as part of reality. It also provides interesting ways to think about ways to reconcile belief with science. Finally, the book adds great insight into beliefs in alien abductions.
Commendable, but needs an update.......2003-11-23
I applaud Professor Hufford for this ground-breaking analysis
of Night Hag (Phantomania) attacks. Nothing else quite like
it since its original publication over 20 years ago.
Though it begins, and occasionally bogs down, in typically tiresome academic prose, Hufford has the courage to allow the facts to speak for themselves - with the benefit of his methodical and objective reasoning. This eventually delivers his subject from the tediousness of too much jargon and equivocating.
And though he (wisely) resists arriving at any certain conclusions, his courage to at least acknowledge most of the possible correlatives associated with pavor nocturnus is to his credit.
Most of the eyewitness accounts (which, I think, could have been
improved by some editting), actually make for some scary and unnerving late night reading. If you have read Grave's End,
you will know what I mean - only multiple, and more believable, examples of the same sort of experience.
I only wish that the Professor had more thoroughly described the different stages of sleep, including brain wave Hz rates, length and periodicity of cycles and degress of REM activity.
It seems to me that an all inclusive scientific study of nightmares should result in some truly surprising insights into the nature of consiousness itself.
Likewise, Professor Hufford is way overdue for an update considering the limited sources his research was conducted
from and based upon.
In that regard, allow me to recommend to whomever might be
interested in pursuing an understanding of the Night Hag:
Carlos Castaneda's The Active Side of Infinity, particularly
the chapters on Inorganic Awareness and Mud Shadows.
Skeptical? Just take a look, you'll see what I mean.
a great book for anyone suffering from sleep paralysis!.......2000-10-03
If you have ever awoke to the sudden realization that you cannot move, and this experience has been accompanied by a convincing feeling that there is something with a sinister intention there with you in the room, or if you have felt, heard, or even seen something strange and haunting during this state of immobility, then this book is for you my unfortunate friend! I have suffered from sleep paralysis most my life, and this is the only book I have ever found that explores the subject. A very interesting read! Although I do not agree with some of the conclusions that the author suggests, it is nevertheless a well researched and informative book. By the way, if you do suffer from sleep paralysis or the "old hag" as Hufford calls it, it is completely harmless based upon my own experience, other than it can scare the bejeebers out of you. If you do suffer from the above mentioned symptoms, there are several BB's on the web where you can talk with others that suffer from SP, and don't get too worked up over it, it happens to a lot of us as this book skilfully demonstrates.

Good read .......2007-09-01
I enjoyed this book. It was a page turner. This is a first time to read this author. I will look for more of her books. A very good thriller.
Amazing softmore effort.......2005-06-02
This author shows much promise in this page turner. If you like Dean Koontz and Stephen King, you will love Chandler McGrew.
Still lookin' over my shoulder..........2004-08-31
Chandler McGrew's "Night Terror" is a witty and lithe combination of plots that intimately intertwine and play off one another, as well as characters that seem to continually get themselves in deeper and deeper trouble. Just when you think all is lost... Well, you read if for yourself! I thoroughly enjoyed the unfolding of the characters as they came together to thwart evil at it's darkest moments! McGrew has succeeded in giving us another novel that is hard to put down. Another must-read from Chandler McGrew!
Hard To Put Down!!!.......2003-08-11
This was a very good book!! Once I started reading it I didn't want to put it down. It keeps you turning the pages wanting to know what is going to happen next. I didn't want it to end. I really enjoyed this book and will be looking forward to the next one!!
masterful psychological suspense.......2003-03-06
Arcos, Maine is a small quiet town where people know their neighbors and doors are never locked. Yet in the space of four years two boys disappeared without a trace and most people, including Sheriff Virgil Milche, think they will never be found. Zach Bock has been missing for over a year now and his parents, Richard and Audrey, remain tortured by his absence. Audrey, who had a very strong bond with her son, has begun suffering night terrors and episodes where she hears her son's voice.
Richard thinks she is near a breakdown and insists that she visits a psychiatrist. To pacify him, she agrees to go. After speaking time with the doctor, Audrey realizes that the aunt who raised her after a traumatic childhood with her mother has brainwashed her into forgetting her salad days. If she hopes to find out what happened to Zach, Audrey must be willing to face the demons of her own past.
Chandler McGrew has written a masterful work of psychological suspense with some paranormal elements intertwined into the story line. The heroine is facing every mother's worst nightmare while fighting for her own sanity. She is a character that readers will identify with and take into their hearts. NIGHT TERRORS is a fascinating reading experience because like Memorex readers don't know what is real and what is a figment of the character's imagination.

Banishing night terrors ands nightmares.......2007-02-20
An exelent book on a subject hard to find any decent info
This book helped change my life........2005-07-02
I had suffered from terrible night terrors for decades before finding the answers I needed in this book. I fit the personality characteristics listed and I found the explanations for these characteristics comforting. The relationship section was also quite relevant to my life. But the most valuable part of the book for me was the section on solutions. I had to apply almost all of the important information listed in this chapter (including the information on effective drugs) to my life. This was by no means a ten minute fix. It took a little time, energy and effort but it worked.
Not helpful to alleviate night terrors.......2004-06-18
If you are looking for a book to help you alleviate night terrors, this is probably not the book to read. The book claims to be a breakthrough program, but it offers very little guidance for alleviating them. The main author, who is a sufferer of night terrors, but not a doctor, goes to great lengths to support his claim that all adult night terrors must be caused by past trauma. It is imperative, he says, that a sufferer recognize that trauma (primarily child abuse) occured and to move on. If the reader doesn't buy into this assertion, then the rest of the book is really not helpful. I was hoping for more on how to alleviate night terrors, but this book came up short, in my opinion.

OK book i guess I'd give it a thums up.......2007-05-24
A Night in Terror Tower was an ok story. Some of it was confusing, it wasn't explained. The story was coinsidental, everything was planned out. Some parts of the book popped out at me and some parts were very boring. You should read this book and see what I'm talking about.

A Night in Terror Tower was an ok story. some of it was confusing, it wasn't explained. the story was coinsidental, it was all setup. Some parts of the book poped out at me and some parts were boring. You should read the book and see what I'm talking about.
A great read!.......2006-03-09
A Night in Terror Tower is an amazing little book. With only 129 pages it is more than able to draw in a reader and fuel the imagination long after completion. The story is about two young children in London. They take a tour to the Terror Tower in London. The tour turns sour when they lose their guide and are hunted by the mysterious man in the black cape. The children are suffering from memory loss and nothing seems to be going their way! When the man in the black cape catches them the story takes a major twist, the kids are now in the past! This story is excellent for younger readers and will keep them turning pages for hours. I would recommend this book for anyone ages 8-12, but even adults could enjoy this as a quick night read! The graphic settings and bone chilling details to R. L. Stines books really keep you involved. The story is filled with humor, horror, drama, and action that won't let you sit anywhere but the edge of your seat.
Goosebumps # 27: A night in terror tower.......2006-02-19
A Night in Terror Tower is not the best Goosebumps book, But it is still good.
It is about a brother and sister(Eddie and Sue)that are in London because their parents have some meetings ( It never says what the meetings are for, But not even Eddie and Sue know, and you'll figure out why.) They spend their day with a tour group. They come to visit terror tower. While touring, they get separated from their group and are persued by a man in a cape that wants them for reasons unknown. Read the book to find out what happens when Eddie and Sue are finnaly captured.
The revening beast.......2005-11-03

Great Book, about real people bad and good.......2006-07-14
I wanted to read this because my 5th grade teacher was on the wrong path and died in a gunbattle while participating in an attempted bombing. What I got was a story about people's struggles to prevent wrongs and the risks that they took. Right away I wanted to call and thank the parents of a childhood jewish friend for their work. Fabulous!
amazing.......2006-01-31
I thought this book was amazing. It gives a whole new perspective to how the KKK affected the south.
Amazing History of Southern Jews.......2006-01-05
I read this book after learning of a friend of mine who grew up Jewish in Jackson Mississippi and went through everything Nelson talks about. The book was incredibly written and Nelson is a phenomonal Journalist. I highly recomend this book to anyone looking to learn more about American history or history of Jews in the South.
Good book.......2000-11-08
This is of particular interest to people living in Mississippi in the 1960's. I was a child during this time and knew the children of the players in the book. I never knew the terrible things they were going through. It gave me a deep appreciation of the people involved. It also made me think in ways that I had never really considered. For example, the fact that the Klan is a terrorist organization rather than a bunch of rednecks in sheets.
excellent.......2000-05-18
I had to read this for school. I thought it would be horribly boring, but it was excellent.

Book Description
YOU ARE THE CHOSEN ONE
Welcome to Sunnydale High, where midterms and peer pressure are the least of your worries. The Stake Your Destiny series returns Buffy Summers and the Scoobies to the glory days of high school. But this time you control the action and accept the full responsibility of being the Slayer. Interactive story lines advance by the choices you make, leading toward more than a dozen possible endings. Do you have what it takes to be the Slayer, or will you fail and summon a successor?

By replacing another's soul with its own, the demon can assume anyone's physical body and wreak havoc in the real world. But the effect is short-lived. Human bodies soon break down under the tremendous stress of the transfer, and the Night Terror is forced to find a new body to inhabit. That is, until it discovers Buffy's secret and imagines the Slayer would make an ideal -- and permanent -- host....

REVIEW
Night Terrors will always hold a special place in my heart because it's the first Buffy Choose-Your-Own-Adventure ("Stake Your Destiny") book I've successfully completed on my first try. Indeed, one of the aspects that sets this book apart from most others in the series is the wide range of possible endings, ranging from complete success to mediocre survival to outright death.
The core plot of the book is an attempt by a demon, the Night Terror, to take over the bodies of residents of Sunnydale by entering into their dreams. This leads to some really interesting and fun dream sequences with Buffy, and shows us examples of how White Hats like Giles, Joyce, and Angel would be like if evil (of course, this last one we know all too well).
The writing is smooth and the dialogue is appropriately quirky. In addition, crisp action scenes and a well-researched bad guy help keep the plot moving. Definitely one of the better Stake Your Destiny books.

A fun Buffy book.......2006-01-18
This is a pretty good Buffy book. Not the best but not the worst. I enjoyed the story. A demon named Mare, the Night Terror, takes control of peoples bodies while they're sleeping. After awhile their astrol cord will break and the persons body will go into a coma. My favorite story in this book is when the Mare takes of your, Buffy's, body and she gets banished into the realm of dreams. It's cool to see what the the other characters are dreaming. The other major story in this book is when the Mare takes over Angel's body. This brings out Angelus too. Ethan Rayne is also involved in part of this book. There is also zombies and a mummy. If you are a fan of Buffy then I think you should pick up this book. The Author did a great job keeping the characters true to the show aswell.

Night Terror Stories of Shadow and Substance.......2005-10-28
Genre:Fiction
Three sentence summary:There is this kid named Bo and his friend got murdered by a killer doll.So now the killer doll is coming to get him.So then he realizes it was all a dream. The doll is kind of like Chucky.
What I liked most about the book:I liked the part when that girl got her head sliced by the doll.
What I didn't like and why: I didn't like Bo because he is not that cool like me.
My favorite character and why: My favorite character is the killer doll. Why because he kills people and that is cool to me.
The scene, line,or passage that meant something to me and why:
"Hay watch out", said Bo as he took out his shotgun. The killer doll was right behind his friend as he fired a bullet into his head.
What would I say about this book to someone else:It is a great book and you would probaly wet your pants reading it because it is to scary for the reader. So read it and don't wet your pants.
One question I have after reading this book:Why did the killer doll have to die and couldn't the author make Bo a gangster?
My strongest reason for recommending this book:It has action and brings a chill down your spin.So watch out because the killer doll is real! (Don't wet your pants)

Night Terrors, sounds scary doesn't it? Wrong. By the title it sounds like it's the type of book you don't want to read if you get scared easily, but this book isn't scary enough to scare a six year old. It's a collection of short stories that are supposed to frighten you. In addition to being boring many of the stories don't make since. For example "The Monkey's Wedding", about an old lady's son painted a famous picture called "The Monkey's Wedding." The stories most interesting event was when the old lady got a phone call saying here son had been killed, then the picture was mailed to her and the story ended. I can see how this book might be interesting to some people, but wasn't to me. When started reading this book I thought it would be scary, it didn't come close. On the good side this book was well written and had a lot of detail. Some of the stories did interest me but more often than not the stories were a disappointment. I think the author should have put different stories in the book or just changed the title to something that wasn't scary sounding. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone except for parents to read to kids five and under. This book is a disappointment.
