I have this book and many other C++ books, have to say, Nay.
Definitely not for professional programmers.

Maybe OK for beginners, I am not too sure. Cause I think there are a few other books out there, that are better organized.

Only bright point: print quality is really good, formatting and page quality.

C++ primer plus is better.......2007-02-23

For the students who want to learn C++, the book C++ primer plus is
way much better than this one (and also a lot cheaper). This book is
getting bigger and bigger. It tries to explain everything in one book, which, to my oppion, is a big mistake. No one can fully comprehend every aspect of C++ in one book. As a textbook, it needs to be more focused. In this sense, the book C++ primer plus (remember there is a "plus") is superior than this one. You may want to check my review on the book C++ primer plus (and also my review on C++ primer).

This book is way too expensive for poor college students. The color pages look good, but you paid $$$$$ for that.

Very good........2007-02-13

This is an excellent C++ book either for the beginner or the more advanced programmer. My only problem with this book was the way it introduced the type Class but didn't explain this fundamental concept thoroughly. If you are a novice at object oriented programming this could be confused as the example class "Gradebook" quickly becomes populated with member functions. The book spent more time harping on the = versus == stumbling block than the idea of classes!

Other than that small problem I found it to be an excellent C++ book.

Worst C++ book ever.......2006-11-08

Do yourself a favor. Buy "The C++ Programming Language" by Stroustrup instead of this one.

The state of the art in computer textbooks (beginner to intermediate).......2006-10-29

While this text targets the beginners to intermediates in the C++ way of doing things, the layout and content of the book (and CD-ROM and "Cyber Classroom") are excellent. I believe this book sets the standard in educational texts. The "For Dummies" series or the "Idiot's Guide To" series don't have the quality and usefulness that Deitel's book has. He keeps the humour and other distractions to a minimum and focuses on any given topic with concision and clarity, without demeaning the reader with stupid jokes that a 5 year old might laugh at. The code samples are also beautifully layed out, with nice looking highlighted code. Even the type of paper used is of high quality but admittedly, the paper type is common in university level textbooks. This book is currently the recommended text for second year computer science students at my university.

The online accompaniment to the book is very good and I think represents where educational textbooks are going, with an emphasis on online material. Much of the book's content can be found online. The book provides you with a code to access the online content. They even include audio samples to go along with the code samples (as in, an instructor's voice....not music or anything). The web design is also top notch.

This is my first Deitel book but I really doubt it will be my last. The "How-To" series looks like it includes most, if not all of the other popular languages as well. He also has many books for advanced programming which I look forward to getting later on.

Highly recommended!

While the Bible may be the word of God, transcribed by divinely inspired men, it does not provide a full (or even partial) account of the life of Jesus Christ. Lucky for us that Christopher Moore presents a funny, lighthearted satire of the life of Christ--from his childhood days up to his crucifixion--in Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal. This clever novel is surely blasphemy to some, but to others it's a coming-of-age story of the highest order.

Joshua (a.k.a. Jesus) knows he is unique and quite alone in his calling, but what exactly does his Father want of him? Taking liberties with ancient history, Moore works up an adventure tale as Biff and Joshua seek out the three wise men so that Joshua can better understand what he is supposed to do as Messiah. Biff, a capable sinner, tags along and gives Joshua ample opportunities to know the failings and weaknesses of being truly human. With a wit similar to Douglas Adams, Moore pulls no punches: a young Biff has the hots for Joshua's mom, Mary, which doesn't amuse Josh much: "Don't let anyone ever tell you that the Prince of Peace never struck anyone." And the origin of the Easter Bunny is explained as a drunken Jesus gushes his affection for bunnies, declaring, "Henceforth and from now on, I decree that whenever something bad happens to me, there shall be bunnies around."

One small problem with the narrative is that Biff and Joshua often do not have distinct voices. A larger difficulty is that as the tone becomes more somber with Joshua's life drawing to its inevitable close, the one-liners, though not as numerous, seem forced. It's hard to get offended reading 'Lamb' as Moore treats the titular character with respect while portraying his human side, and of course letting Biff do all the dirty work. Those of faith will easily dive into the book, relishing in a story about a man who, while divine, is still a human with all the same anxieties, fears, and desires. The book takes a somewhat odd turn in the middle that I felt pushed it a little too much into fantasy, but in retrospect it did add a lot to the story and broke the book up into three acts. The end was particularly moving, and the change in tone and tempo appropriately brought a new perspective to one of the most-told tales.

In terms of writing style, the book is conversational and it is easy to shoot through. You can pick it up for five minutes and make progress or two hours and not grow weary.

Humanizing but Reverent.......2007-09-27

While it may not be the expected response, this comedic novel on the missing 30 years in the Gospels helps my faith, in both Christ and humanity in general.

In spite of its fictional base and outlandish experiences based at least partly in myth, Moore uses a logical and solid grounding in both the Bible and history that resonates strongly. While the poetic license in some areas is strong (the Messiah using the power of his mind to cram himself into glass jars) in others the facts speak for themselves (Jewish customs both honored by Christ after the "coming" and those dismissed).

Almost no one's faith is ridiculed in this novel, with Moore instead using Biff as the catalyst for the humor focused on a personal level. Instead of ridicule, between bizarre experiences and funny anecdotes, Moore goes about methodically answering how Jesus became Jesus, and not just some poor kid from Nazereth. It may not be a convincing or even possible explanation, but it carries its own logic and the reader is carried along a natural progression.

Moore has to create a character of the Son of God, no easy feat. I think he accomplishes this end very well, since I found myself wrapped up in the plight of these two childhood friends, even though I already "know" how the story turns out.

Brilliant, irreverence...not for the faint of heart!.......2007-09-17

From the moment "Josh" (Aka: Jesus) was described as babysitting his younger brother...quietly sitting with him and occasionally putting the lizard in his mouth that his brother had just whacked on a rock...thus bringing it back to life....then handing it back to his brother.....*whack* goes the lizard....*pop* back into Josh's mouth...*whack* and so-on.....Josh was described as calm, patient, everything you'd hope and expect him to be...even as a babysitter...(and no, that's not exactly a spoiler there.) Biff on the other hand was Josh's alter-ego. His other half. He was the one who could get away with everything Josh couldn't - and then Josh would in his way live vicariously through Biff and his adventures. The book goes into the missing years of Jesus's life. What DID he do in those missing years? Well, the Bible doesn't exactly say. Christopher Moore gives a fascinating account of what he could have been up to. He certainly could have gone out on a hunt for the Three Wise Men. He could have. Did he? Who knows? But oh, wouldn't it be fun if his adventures were something like this? Christopher Moore's irreverence and humor makes Jesus more approachable. In his way, Moore turns this foray into Biblical history into an enjoyable and yes, sometimes disgusting tale. You delve into different belief systems - different Traditions. You see that Jesus himself respecting other beliefs and even following those Traditions and religions as a student of all things. I found myself thinking more than once that it's a shame more people who claim to follow Jesus's teachings don't do the same.
If you can look at Jesus with a sense of humor, read this. You won't be sorry. What you will do, however, is laugh until you cry, so you'd better be prepared with some of those funny little incontinence pads just in case. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Laughing this much must be a sin!.......2007-09-11

This is one of the few books that I joyously read over and over. From the moment I read that Biff's mother was beset by demons... I knew he was my kind of guy.I have given this book to several of my friends as a must read. The best way to describe this story is to say that it is an irreverant satire that becomes reverant. Wonderful, READ IT! You wont be sorry.

Funny........2007-09-10

This was very funny up until Moore's take on the passion story, when it gets serious. I especially liked all the things Biff invents: matches, cream in coffee, sarcasm, etc. I also like it when he tries to fool Joshua (Jesus) by citing non-existent scripture, like Amphibians 6:5, for example, and Joshua, of course, plays the perfect staight-man. Moore obviously did his homework on this amusing tour of major world religions. I prefer a long, satisfying denouement and Moore's is rather abrubt, but the book was most enjoyable.

A great overview.......2007-07-30

This book has consistently been one of the most accessible overviews of the CCNA material. I have been using these books since the 3rd edition and I have yet to be disappointed. Although the book may not go into as much depth as some of the other books on the market, it presents the ideas in a very clear language. If you are looking to get a good idea of how IP networks are put together and a basic introduciton to configuring cisco routers, this book will be a huge help.

Great to begin with.......2007-05-24

My advice would be to start with this book first, then move onto CCNA Cisco press. Todd Lammle wrote this book as if you where setting in a class and learning from an instructor, some of the basic information that you need to know for exam will be covered in his text that can be easily be pick up by using his book. The only problem with this book is that he doesn't cover everything on the exam; as stated by the other reviewer. Cisco press is going to give you everything you need; but with dry content. The Cisco press content is not that bad if you start off with Sybex.

There isn't much more I can say about this book than has already been said. I used Todd's guide to help me pass the CCNA in 2000 and am using him again to recertify. Just an excellent book. Period.

Behind the Times........2007-04-10

Five years ago, I took a course on the CCNA exam, and the Sybex book was the standard course material. The Cisco books at that time were overly wordy, dry, and difficult to learn from. This seems to be the major reason Sybex became the textbook of choice for Cisco material. I had good success with that book and passed the test on the first try with little complications.

Then, a few months ago, I decided to go back and tackle the new CCNA exam and get certified again. Naturally, I went back to Sybex and bought this book. After a month of study, I felt I had fully grasped all the concepts in the book and began taking practice tests in preparation for the 640-801 exam. I was disappointed to find that I was repeatedly failing the practice tests. I spent some time reviewing and slowly came to realize that there are a variety of topics you will face on the new CCNA exams that aren't favored enough in the Sybex book. Frustrated, I went and picked up the Cisco Press: Official Exam Certification Library, which consists of the "CCNA Intro" and "CCNA ICND" books. I thought at first that having two books for this material was overkill. After several weeks of reading through these books, I am startled at how much raw content is in these two books that is directly relevant to the test. Even more obvious is how basic the Sybex course material is in comparison.

My personal experience is this: Cisco seems to have toughened up their exams quite a bit since they switched to the new CCNA exam, and Sybex doesn't seem to have kept up with this. Considering Sybex has also tried to squeeze the entire CCNP course material into a single book, when Cisco has four separate books for the same material, I'm not surprised that the CCNA book feels compressed. In particular, the areas I'm finding the biggest gaps between the two are as follows:

Cat 2950 Switch configuration - This is kept to a minimum in the Sybex book and only the most basic commands are offered.

General Routing Troubleshooting - A big theme in the practice tests I have taken thus far is the ability to properly troubleshoot various router setups. While the Sybex book gives you all the basic show commands and gives a very straightforward configuration for each topic, it simply isn't enough. There should have been several chapters dedicated purely to troubleshooting. The Cisco material did not provide dedicated chapters to troubleshooting either, but they take much longer to explain the topics than Sybex did.

Various Miscellaneous Topics - There are a variety of commands, terms, and concepts that I never saw until I started taking practice tests and picked up the Cisco Press CCNA Flash Cards book.

In closing, I will say that I like the way Todd Lammle writes. He is very easy to understand and Chapter 3 of this book (which covers IP subnetting) is a very well written chapter. This book is by no means "bad". It just isn't enough to pass the exam on it's own. If you have yet to purchase any material for the CCNA, I strongly recommend you spend the extra ten dollars and pick up the Official Exam Certification Library from Cisco Press. While it may be a little more difficult to read, it will be worth it when you go to take your test.

Great Intro + lots of examples.......2007-10-04

I am a hobby programmer.
I really like the style of this book.
I played with Java a little before this book and I had trouble with compiling and running the programs.(You have to edit the environmental variables in XP)
He covered that almost immediately. That alone told me how systematic his approach is.
I have not delved in any further then Chapter 8, but following the samples with the proper way of preparation is very helpful.

Very Good book........2007-10-01

I am currently taking a class in Java and this book has been a great help in understanding the fundamentals. It is written really well and example codes and the code explanations are very helpful. The case studies at the end of the chapters are great. The CD with example files is helpful because it allows you to do more than read, you can get hands on work with the codes.

The only drawback is the size of the book and that isn't very serious compared to all of its good qualities

Good for even experience developers.......2007-07-03

I've been programming C++ for 12+ years now (C for 23+), and I was hoping Deitel had a Developer Series book for Java (like they have for C#), but there currently is not one.

However, that did not deter me from purchasing their "How to Program" book, and it has been worth it. If you are an experienced developer, this book still contains good info, with great examples, is up-to-date with the latest Java language enhancements.

If you're one of those people who judge a book by the inverse proportion of the number of pages, please rethink your view. Sure, this book is big, but it shows all you need to know, which is great if you are new to programming, and is a minor hassle if you are not.

Colorized code helps greatly (like your IDE). It gets into language syntax/semantics but also the various java import libraries - graphics, database, et. al.

The Software Engineering tips are always "right on".

I am currently taking a graduate class in Java at my local university and this book has come in handy.

Very Thorough Textbook.......2007-06-01

I used this book to begin my studies in Java. I finished all chapters and then bought an SCJP preparation book. I completed the exam with a score of 75% (59% is passing). I constantly use this book for reference. Well layed out and has everything.

Java How to Program 7th edition.......2007-05-26

The text assumes no prior programming experience. The style is clear, if somewhat oversimplified, examples are easy to follow. There are appendices for reference on questions such as operator precedence. Problems at the end of chapters reflect the material presented.
New terms are defined precisely and clearly, and relevant examples are given. CD's with many example programs are included.
The authors, however, have a tendency to repeat themselves, possibly in an attempt to make the material more accessible. Self-evident concepts, such as that pseudocode is not real code are repeated unnecessarily. Also, sections of example Java code are reprinted in full repeatedly with code additions or variations. This repetition and oversimplified approach has resulted in a 1596 page text. Don't drop it on your foot!
Yes, I recommend this text, but you may have to exercise some patience with occasional overly drawn out exposition.

Network textbook.......2006-10-10

This is a great book for learning the CCNA material. It will teach you all of the major points that you need to study to pass the exam. Even if you are not taking the exam and just want information on how networks are designed, this is the book. I found it a good read and the practice CD was priceless in learning how to issue commands to the various Cisco routers. A great book and worth the money too!!!

Clearify something....5 stars not accurate..........2006-09-21

Everyone here critizes < < typos here and there.. lacking this and lacking that... WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND if this book is so bad... remember that next time you write a negative review.. that will help us (the newbies) know where to get this right information....

Disappointing and frustrating.......2005-12-05

For the last 3 years I would have sworn by Todd Lammle's CCNA Study Guides; mainly do to his free-hearted writing style that seem to add an element of humor to complex reads. However, this book has far too many errors and lacked technical intensity. In the past, I used Todd's 607 Study Guide to pass the archived 607 exam on the first try. Two and half years later, I purchased the 801 Study Guide with the same enthusiasm. After reading this book twice, taking all 8 bonus exams repeatedly, and exhausting the capabilities of the simulation software, I took the comprehensive 801 exam this weekend and did not pass! My exam had multiple questions that were not covered in Lammle's book. Not to mention the lack of coverage of NAT, that seems to magically show up on my exam. None of which was covered with enough detail within this book. Moreover, the Virtual Lab was not exhaustive and far too basic (No OSPF, EIGRP or NAT simulation capabilities). In my opinion, this is not acceptable. Especially when I was faced with these topics through out my exam. I wish this book did a better job of pinpointing the areas that were and would be crucial on the exam. Although Todd Lammle attempted to do place emphasis on certain points, none of those points showed up on test day. Obviously, Cisco has made the exam harder to achieve by reading materials alone (even there own text). Therefore, accurate and thought-provoking supplemental materials are a must!!The bonus questions simply repeat themselves over-and-over again. The book as a whole lacked coverage on crucial technologies and is filled with confusing statements and answers that turn out to be mistakes- Go figure! All of which, led me to give this book 3 stars (maybe closer to 2 1/2).

big disapointment...........2005-11-18

Mr. Lammle is still an excellent teacher/writer (the best), but the omission of some crucial material is a setup for test disaster. In particular there is little information on NAT, and zero configuration examples. 4 months ago I recertified on the CCNA and one of the simulation questions was NAT configuration and at least 3 multiple choice were on NAT router commands. I am now tutoring 4 other engineers using this book and we've had to use Cisco Press books to cover NAT and other material that is missing. The Simulator in this book will not do OSPF and EIGRP (both crucial, so we bought Mr. Lammle's routersim from www.routersim.com, this does allow these routing protocols, but VTP doesn't work correctly with the simulator switches. In hindsight I would definitely use Cisco Press now, it doesn't appear that Sybex is keeping up. The Cisco books aren't as well written or real world, but they have everything you need to pass the test.

Well written, Full coverage of all topics except NAT/PAT.......2005-11-10

The author has done a good job in writing the book, which provides detailed explanation of all the topics covered in the exam except for NAT/PAT, which is an important objective of the CCNA exam and you can hardly find one CCNA exam that doesn't test your knowledge in that area.

More enhancements on how OSPF works is needed, since it's not covered clearly in the book.

Other than that the book is enough to pass the test except for the points I discussed previously.

One more thing, the bounce exams found in the study tools CD are very workable, never skip them you may encounter the same questions in the exam. I did!

Awesome reference.......2006-11-05

There's minimal reading in this book, which is nice since it's good for reference. The reading that it does have is very simple with bulleted paragraphs full of information that you can't get from looking at the diagrams.
Great diagrams for industrial design students (I got this for one of my classes), gives you the measurements, reach, sight and motion range, pretty much any numeric info you need to know for the 1 percentile, 99 percentile, and 50 percentile man/woman.
Also has nice chart of child development w/descriptions of what the ave. child can do at each age, as well as diagrams for the elderly (and in wheelchair). This book is essential if you are going for product design or interior design.

I AM A BIG FAN OF THE AUTHOR, AND HAVE USED HIS WORKS IN THE PRACTICE OF MY WORK MANY TIMES, THE BOOK, IS GOOD WITH MANY PRACTICAL EXAMPLES, BUT SADLY DOES NOT SEEM TO TELL ME ANYMORE THAN I ALREADY KNEW. ....I WAS HOPING FOR MORE.

The best way to learn C# or any programming language is to type out and debug many programs. This book provides many examples for the same. Although I find this book too wordy, I recommend to read the book to get the best out of it.

Visual C# 2005 (2nd edition) is an excellent book, while it is very lengthy, the book covers most of the topics with an extreme amount of detail. While the main focus of the book is C#, coverage of XML and ASP is also included. The review questions at the end of each chapter made this book have a text book feeling commonly seen in a classroom, but this was highly useful. This book is not meant as a quick intro into a programming language, but rather an intermediate or deep study of C#.

This is an excellant book on C# for programmers and also for those who don't know any programming.
Deitel books are recommended for everyone. I trully enjoy their books.

Another Deitel sleeping pill.......2007-06-15

The book is too expensive, plain and simple. It does not deliver for the price you have to pay but it is "academic friendly" so you'll have to buy it if you take college programming classes.

The book starts out very slow and drawn out. So many statements are made by the authors in this book that, while they are indeed true, are so abundant and on even the most mundane topics you forget what you're supposed to be learning. The authors wrote a programming book in which they dedicate painful step by step procedures (with complete screenshots) of how to start a new project in the VS IDE and such. I find that insulting. If you have this book, chances are you have been using Windows for more than two weeks and know how to create new documents, etc from the standard menu items. Also, chances are this isn't your first programming book. It is not marketed as a complete beginner book or for an introduction to programming course. Visual Studio isn't THAT complicated to start using; I'd be very surprised if any reader of this book would be completely lost if they didn't have their hand held while starting a new project. "Click File - New Project. Click OK. See Figure 3.1." They repeat this type of hand holding all throughout the book.

The book "Programming in the Key of C#" devotes one small paragraph to the process of creating a new project, and this is very much a beginner's programming book. No figures, no screenshots just a very simple explanation.

They go all out in the minutia to woo academia because it's so correct. It has the sense of completeness but lacks where it counts; understanding the topic.

In their painful attention to detail and accuracy (which are usually good qualities to have), they have gone too far to see the forest for the trees. What's worse is sometimes you'll find pertinent information buried within the fluff, so you can't skip over anything.

I could explain what a flower is in 10 pages of semi-related information while going off on tangents and you still wouldn't know what a flower was. It's just as important to show readers the information they need to know, as it is to hide from them the information they do not need to know.

Here's a quote directly from the book:
"Exception handling enables programmers to create applications that can resolve (or handle) exceptions."

A good book is short and concise. This book for all the pages is missing good explainations and details about the topics.Their thinking is 4 pages of code is good info. Its not. A explaination then a short block of code is good info.

Not impressed.......2007-09-16

I'm taking a VB 2005 class in college and we are using this book. I am not a programmer, I am a Systems & Network Analyst and I read lots and lots of computer books and I have to say that his book reads horribly. I find myself confused at times and its very fast paced. Also, our instructor assigns us the exercises at the end of the chapters and the exercises are truly hard. The exercises want you to create something that was "supposedly" covered in the chapter. Not that it wasnt covered, its just that it did not go into depth as much as it should to do the exercise. Everytime I have to work an exercise I have to look else where to find a solution or sample code. I would not recommend this book to anyone unless you have taken and Intro VB class or read an Intro VB book.

I have been used this book for my teachings to my students. It is a very good book to teach them the concept of procedural and object-oriented programming. The book is well-organized and impressively, my students understood the OOP very well. TQ.

The book is very well set out and easy to follow. I cannot fault the way in which each subject is approached and explained. The questions and answers are a useful test to find out if you have understood the chapter.

If I were to say anything against the book it would concern the test examples at the end of each chapter. I know that the book is for teachers and their students so I understand that answers aren't given. It would, however, be nice to have a couple of questions with answers for those of us who are using the book on their own to learn Visual Basic.

I whole heartedly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to learn Visual Basic.

The Best Book Ever.......2007-06-28

Fingerprint is a feast for the eyes and the spirit. Simply delicious. It's one of the most inspiring books I have ever seen and I have not let it out of my sight since I got it. I want to crawl inside this book and roll around on the pages.
Fingerprint features graphic designs with handmade elements. Next to the amazing art are notes by the designers. I love this. The artists tell you they used a pencil, a photograph, and a scanner. They don't tell you how you can get this identical look by buying 12 different products that cost lots of money. It's art without a sales pitch, which is rare these days. Everything in this book is unique and there's so much personality jumping from the pages.
Buy it, you will LOVE it.

This book is a great source for inspiration and motivation and a definite owner. Especially for those that have a niche for a hands-on approach to design. This is the new movement right now ... back to basics.
