1 out of 5 stars So bad, so paranoid, so illogical........2004-09-22

Of all the irrational political books on the market, this ranks among the worst. It's worse than Michael Moore as far as innacuracy and lack of evidence of mental strength. It would seem that Bowen has just enough functioning neural connection to write, gather random unverified stories and maintain a paranoid outlook, beyond that I guess he must at least have a functioning brain stem. Nearly everything in this book can (or has been) easily refuted. Nothing more than a middle school students efforts at critical thinking can refute his claims. The fact that idiots are out there buying this and believing it is both scary and disappointing. Nothing new I guess.

5 out of 5 stars The Truth Will Set You Free.......2004-06-02

The people that gave this book a low rating have either not read the book or are just looking to discredit truth about the Axis of Evil - Jeb,Dubya and Daddy !

I can't believe I was duped into buying this crap.
Bowen's next book should be about the people living on Mars.

5 out of 5 stars Unmasking the Bushes.......2003-11-28

Russell Bowen's account of the Bush family serves as a roadmap illustrating how contacts coupled with opportunism produced a pattern of corruption which continues as George II rules in a position achieved through vote theft and a hypocritical one vote Supreme Court majority which cut against the grain of state rights cession these justices generally embrace.

Bowen was one of the first authors, along with historian John Loftus, to reveal how the Bush economic empire received a major boost in the pre-World War Two period with loans from banker Prescott Bush, grandfather of the current officeholder, to Adolf Hitler. This valuable money enabled the Nazi dictator to gain more pig iron and develop his weapons potential.

A former intelligence operative himself, the knowledgeable Bowen traces Bush I's links as CIA Director to drug activity, culminating with his bombing of Panama and the civilian casualties that resulted. Bowen exposes the fraudulent claims of Bush to "get Noriega" after the CIA Director had used the Panamanian dictator as a valuable intelligence source.

The claim that George I was a self-made man in the West Texas oil business is also exposed as a sham by Bowen. The public relations myth perpetrated by Bush cronies was that the Ivy Leaguer drove into West Texas in a dusty old jalopy and, through proper application, made a fortune. In reality he flew into West Texas in his father's private jet and used contacts to achieve a fortune. He emerged as a man of privilege from the beginning who used patrimonious affirmative action to gain fame and fortune. He emerges, as humorist Jim Hightower quipped, as "a man who was born on third base and believed he had hit a triple."

Bowen displays prescience in dealing with the Bush sons in one perceptive chapter. He links all of them to shady dealings and corporate corruption, notably George II and his swift bailout before the roof fell on Harken Energy Corporation, the oil company he headed. His father, then president, squelched the investigation into Bush II's Harken activities.

4 out of 5 stars Godfather George and Real Politiks.......2003-09-12

"Give this job to Jr." says Bush the elder invoking images of this waspish, thin-lipped, internationalist operating worldwide yet maintaining a public image of down-homeiness.

Russell Bowen more than rips the lid off the public image carefully cultivated by Bush, Inc. exposing the dark side of not just American politics but its international tentacles stretching into every country where American business/government conducts its business with a plethora of American paid for and sponsored dictators.

Gore Vidal has written that the American Republic ended in July 1947 with the signing, and creation, of the national security state vis-avis the founding of the CIA. For George Herbert Walker Bush, the national security state always existed.

Bowen traces the history of the Bush crime family interweaving the story of the family with the politics of the nation and the high flying deals which enriched the family. Bowen documents not just the Machiavellian work of Bush the elder, but the sins of the sons, Neil, Jeb and Dubya. Admitting to his own work under orders from Bush the elder, he asks the following questions:

Where was George?

1. When, during World War II, his shipmates were drowning after the bomber plane Bush was piloting was shot down?

2. When the Bay of Pigs was planned?

3. When John F. Kennedy was assassinated?

4. When presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated?

5. When Martin Luther King was assassinated?

6. When a "deal" was made to hold the Iran hostages until the inauguration of Reagan?

7. When Ronald Reagan was nearly assassinated in Washington by a known Bush family associate?

8. When the truth about this association with Iraq should have been made clear to the American people?

I found many parts of this book to be fascinating, I became intrigued with Bowen's revelations of the business dealings between the grandfather of W.S.Farish. According to Bowen, Farish was the inheritor of the Auschwitz deaht camp fortune. In 1980, Bush designated Farish as manager of his vast wealth deposited in a "blind trust." Bush knew he could trust Farish to keep the family secrets as Farish's money was made from the same Nazi enterprise as Bush's father Prescott.

According to Bowen, "Farish's grandfather, W.S.Farish, pleaded, "no contest" to charges of criminal conspiracy with the Nazis. As president and chief executive of Standard Oil of New Jersey, Farish was the controller of the global cartel between Standard Oil and the German I.G.Farben concern. The joint enterprise had opened the Auschwitz slave labor amp on June 14, 1940, to produce artificial rubber and gasoline from coal. Jews and other political opponents supplied by Hitler as slaves were worked to death or murdered. Senator Harry S. Truman headed a Senate committee investigating the corporations' collaboration with the Nazis. Farish was brought before the committee to answer questions concerning his company's alliance with the Hitler regime that had begun with his presidency of Jersey Standard in 1933. Before Farish testified, Truman told newsmen, "I think this approaches treason."

In an era of literary mediocrity, Bowen has written and published a work documenting the misdeeds and illegalities of a family some consider the Republican Kennedys. Fast forwarding to today, the son, Dubya, is covered with the same crown of thorns befitting Bush the Elder. Bowen proves that information is power so read and consider the information contained in this volume.

The Farish affair is but one of a plethora of similar incidents documented in Bowen's book establishing a pattern of treasonous, illegal and immoral conduct by the Bushes using their position as public officials imbued with a public trust for their own benefit.

5 out of 5 stars Eye Opener.......2007-07-30

I bought this book to help me figure out what type of birth experience I wanted to have. This book has made me want a home birth, which I never thought I'd have the courage to do. This book is empowering, to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars MUST READ.......2007-06-23

I believe this eye opening book should be read by EVERYONE!! I started reading and could not put it down. Don't hesitate to read this book if you are pregnant or planning to be.

5 out of 5 stars Don't let the title scare you away.......2007-01-11

This book is full of invaluable information! From the history of birthing women, to the medically managed crisis in today's hospitals, the reader will get the full picture of why women are completely capable and can be confident to give birth according to their instincts. Don't be turned away by the, I think, radical title. This book is an eye opener, you will fall in love with the natural process and beauty of birth.

5 out of 5 stars Good motivational resource.......2006-10-24

It gives confidence and validation for choosing natural birth, then go read Ina May Gaskin's stuff for more specifics. This book is good, but both of hers are better.

2 out of 5 stars Another perspective.......2006-01-18

I absolutely loved the vignettes in this book but found much of her information to be incorrect. While I do agree that medicine has destroyed the magic of birth, I do not believe that it is a commercial conspiracy against women. Women are able to research pregnancy and childbirth at any time (currently) so it's not 'the man's' fault is she chooses to remain ignorant on the subjects.

I had a wonderful labor and birth with my son--I had an epidural, an Iv due to an infection, and pain medication because I was terrified of going through the same pain my mother and sister did with their children. I felt my son come out, I was not groggy, he was not groggy and we rested quite comfortably for 2 hours before anyone weighed him or even bathed him.

I found a lot of the information presented was outdated and incorrect. I do not know anyone who was separated from their infant by force but I do know a few women who insisted that the baby be removed from their sight!!!!! I did not let my son out of my signt and haven't for 15 months! I would like to add that I refused an internal monitor and my nurse respectfully listened to me. My baby was not taken from me at any time, I breastfed immediately after birth, he slept with me, my husband stayed in my room ,did not have to wear scrubs or anything unnatural and we were an extremely happy family!

I loved labor and delivery and all the pressure in my back and birth canal was worth it!

This is worth the read but please do not base your entire pregnancy and birth on the information presented here. Research your options, read academic and medical journals, read about midwives, read about OBGs and most importantly, listen to your gut!

Book Description

From the acclaimed author of An Instance of the Fingerpost ("may well be the best 'historical mystery' ever written," said The Boston Globe) comes a luminous new Jonathan Argyll/Flavia di Stefano crime novel set against the richly evocative backdrop of Rome and Tuscany.

In his first new novel since An Instance of the Fingerpost became an international bestseller, Iain Pears transports us to Rome, where an impudent thief has stolen a politically sensitive painting on loan from a foreign museum.

Summoned to see the prime minister, Flavia di Stefano, acting head of Italy's Art Theft Squad, is told to retrieve the painting without publicity or payment of ransom. But does the prime minister mean what he says? And why was this particular painting stolen? Faced with a case sure to cause her grief, Flavia turns to her mentor, General Taddeo Bottando, who has a wholly unexpected view of the situation.

Flavia's husband of four weeks, art historian Jonathan Argyll, is busy, meanwhile, with a mission of his own. As a gift to the soon-to-retire Bottando, Jonathan will track down the provenance of a small Renaissance painting, an Immaculate Conception, now hanging on Bottando's wall. Who owned the painting over the years, and how did it come into Bottando's hands?

Flavia's search for an art thief soon becomes a hunt for a killer, while Jonathan's probe uncovers some startling secrets and an unlikely alliance as poignant as it is surprising. Absorbing, witty, ingeniously plotted, The Immaculate Deception is stylish entertainment from a justly celebrated author.

"From internationally bestselling author Iain Pears comes the seventh in his Jonathan Argyll series -- an intriguing mystery of love, loss, and artistic license. For newlywed and Italian art theft squad head Flavia di Stefano, the honeymoon is over when a painting, borrowed from the Louvre and en route to a celebratory exhibition, is stolen. Desperate to avoid public embarrassment -- and to avoid paying a ransom -- the Italian prime minister leans hard on Flavia to get it back quickly and quietly. Across town, her husband, art historian Jonathan Argyll, begins an investigation of his own, tracing the past of a small Renaissance painting -- an Immaculate Conception -- owned by Flavia's mentor, retired general Taddeo Bottando. Soon both husband and wife uncover astonishing and chilling secrets, and Flavia's investigation takes a sudden turn from the search for an art thief to the hunt for a murderer. "

5 out of 5 stars What a Tangled Web We Weave.......2007-04-17

Nowadays, it seems that there is a plethora of mystery writers who must use a particular gimmick to make their mystery work. Some of these writers are sucessful, such as Stephanie Barron and her Jane Austen mystery series, while others get too bogged down in the gimmick to focus on the story at hand. For Iain Pears, his gimmick is that of art history; his detective, a police officer who finds and returns stolen works of art. And it works time and time again.

"The Immaculate Deception" is one of seven books Pears has written that center around his detective Flavia di Stefano and her long-time fiance, now husband, art history professor Jonathan Argyll. This story finds Flavia summoned by no less personage than the prime minister. In this meeting she is told that a painting that was to be borrowed and displayed as part of an exhibition has been stolen. She is to get it back as quickly as possible and to guarantee that no one hears anything about the theft. The recovery process seems just as much of a mystery as to who stole the picture, and for what purpose, in the first place. In the meantime, Jonathan finds himself drawn into a different mystery, concerning the unknown heritage of a small painting owned by Flavia's former boss, General Bottando, who is soon to retire. As each digs further into their own mysterious trails, they soon come to see that the two stories quite possibly are connected to one another.

Iain Pears is an extremely intelligent writer, whose doctorate in art history is evident in the knowledge his characters have at their disposal. His descriptions of the world in which Jonathan and Flavia live are sometimes clipped, as though he expects readers to know as much as him. And even though these books are a series and therefore have some information recapped to the reader in each book, it never seems repetitive or second-hand. That is because the reader has come to know these characters, and smiles at these recaps in fond memory of those former stories. "The Immaculate Deception" is a fascinating web of art history, theft, high crimes and murder. It will keep readers guessing to the very end, when the loose ends are tied up, even if in an unconventional manner.

5 out of 5 stars Fine Italian art world police procedural.......2005-05-13

Prime Minister Antonio Sabauda guaranteed the safety of the Claude Lorraine masterpiece, on loan from the Louvre. Alas museum security and art thieves obviously misunderstood the PM as the painting is stolen. Desperate to recover the stolen painting, but without the media and consequently the public knowing, Sabauda assign acting chief of the Rome Police Department's art theft squad with recovering the lost art.

The government cannot pay the ransom demands as that would break Italian law that is very clear that kidnappers are not to receive ransom money. Like magic an anonymous package containing the exact amount of Euros arrives. A bit surprised by the appearance of the cash, Flavia is further shocked to learn that the thief Maurizio Sabbatini drowned in a tub of plaster with the time of death occurring before he made the ransom demand. While Flavia struggles with her case wondering if the PM is pulling a stunt or perhaps her retired mentor General Taddeo Bottando, her spouse Jonathan Argyll looks into the stealing of the Immaculate Conception painting four decades ago. Neither realized the link between the thefts, but they better soon as more corpses follow the death of Sabbatini.

IMMACULATE DECEPTION provides intriguing varying perspectives of the Italian art world especially from the husband-wife team, the PM, the museum that lost the painting, and the thief, etc. The who-done-it is somewhat convoluted and difficult to follow as the connections between the art thefts seem more like a nebulous version of the DNA helix. Still it is fun to follow Flavia and Jack struggle to solve art mysteries four decades apart and a murder too while their right and wrong morality is challenged as never before.

3 out of 5 stars Felt cheated.......2004-07-27

The strengths of this book have been covered in other reviews here and don't need to be repeated. It's a diverting book, and other than occasional stylistic missteps like amateurish shifts in point of view within scenes and italian characters who seem no more italian than the residents of Omaha, Nebraska, the book goes along okay.

However, there's a major flaw in the book for a regular, mostly ignorant reader like me.

The most compelling mystery in the novel is the identity of the unknown artist of a painting that hangs above a character's mantlepiece. Who painted it? I was dying to know. But Pears never answers that question explicitly. Instead he leaves clues scattered throughout the text, expecting the reader to figure the answer out on his own. Cute, buddy. Hide the dang ball on me. Remind me of my own ignorance. Ach! I wanted to throw the book across the room.

I assume this is some kind of game for art history buffs to play, but would it hurt to have put some kind of warning on the front cover that a degree in renaissance painting is necessary to get full enjoyment from the book?

4 out of 5 stars The series just keeps on getting better and better.......2002-08-10

The seventh and final book of the Jonathan Argyll series by Iain Pears comes after his success with the complex historical thriller 'An Instance Of The Fingerpost', a book totally different from these art mysteries, and far more ambitious. This is not to say that the Jonathan Argyll series is not excellent: it, in fact, keeps getting better and better. Weaving a traditional flair for crime writing with considerable knowledge of the history of art, Pears writes an effortlessly intriguing mystery.

This particular volume takes a turn when it appears that Flavia's boss, General Bottando, may be involved in the latest art crime swindle himself. The book is not predictable and keeps you guessing and is very enjoyable if not as spellbindingly clever as 'An Instance of The Fingerpost'. Well worth as read.

4 out of 5 stars Challenging mystery suggests change of direction for series........2002-08-09

Like Graham Greene, Pears writes both serious, philosophical novels (The Dream of Scipio and An Instance of the Fingerpost) and entertainments--in this case, the fascinating art history mysteries which feature Flavia di Stefano and her boss, Gen. Taddeo Bottando of the Rome police. These quirky detectives from the Art Theft Squad are back in action here, though with changed roles. Bottando is now semi-retired and Flavia, newly married to former art dealer Jonathan Argyll, is acting head of the department.

Life in Pears' Rome never pretends to be simple, and it's always loads of fun for the reader. Here the theft of a priceless painting on loan from the Louvre leads to the Italian prime minister's order to Flavia to find it, but she must not allow the public or the press to know about the theft, she must get it back no matter the cost, she must pay whatever ransom is demanded without using public funds, and she must do this knowing in advance that she will be a scapegoat--that the prime minister will publicly deny everything he's told her. As the search for the painting gets underway, further mysteries unfold, until even Bottando himself is implicated in an art theft.

Influence peddling, payoffs, and old political rivalries are both accepted and taken for granted here as Flavia negotiates the minefields of art and politics. The satire is gentle, and the action is non-stop. The intricacies of the characters' relationships keep the reader constantly challenged and always thinking, and the art history angle, more about provenance than about painters, should appeal to readers with little art background. The surprising conclusion and the major changes resulting to the lives of the main characters are stunning. If Pears continues this series, it will undoubtedly be in new directions. Mary Whipple

Another great book by this author. If this is your first but them all because you will really be pleased. They are just what I am looking for. Interesting and inventive stories and really grab your attention and move at a great pace. I really believed the hatred and pain the lead character was carrying around with him as he went on the hunt. The action was well written, not immature like so many of this type of book give you. You are really cheering this guy on.

When United States President Geoff Collier is confronted with the most dramatic event in history, it is immediately followed by a shocking revelation that threatens to crumble the foundation of Christianity.

After vigorous debate with his advisers, Collier buys into the evidence suggesting that extraterrestrials have made contact. When he announces the momentous news, rumors quickly spread that aliens visited two thousand years ago and perpetrated an incredible deception about the life of Jesus Christ. Whispers of a hoax trigger mass confusion and are magnified by acts of terrorism. Blamed for the chaos and for making a mockery of all that Christian believers hold dear, Collier is dismayed and angered.

Collier comes to believe that an attack on a Libyan weapons of mass destruction site will rekindle respect for the United States—and credibility for himself. For those who enjoy a stimulating "what if" exercise, Richard Boich's novel, "The Immaculate Deception" will have you speculating long after the final chapter. In this age of near space exploration, this novel's central premise has just enough plausibility to at least leave you wondering "even if not yet, then when?"

      5 out of 5 stars Quite a Thriller.......2006-05-28

The Immaculate Deception is a political thriller that grabs your attention from the start. The breadth and depth of subject material pulls the reader into the action and won't let go. The intimate and frightening descriptions of terrorist activities in locations like Belize and the Middle East are particularly riveting in our post-9/11 world. I especially appreciate the author's incorporation of Native American spirituality, in the character of Dan Lake and the effect he has on the U.S. president. The author's portraits of political and religious figures are well drawn and alive.

      5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ.......2006-05-10

A riveting story. Don't start if you do not have plenty of time to read !

High suspense, againist a backdrop of religion questioned and alien contact.

Well thought through to bring hours of reading pleasure.

      5 out of 5 stars Universal Mystery.......2006-05-04

A very thought provoking novel that questions the essence of religion and the impact it has, and continues to pose on our world, all while, inspiring the notion that we are not alone.
A great read! Would make an intriguing screenplay.

4 out of 5 stars Globe Trotting Intrigue.......2006-04-26

Don't let the thought of extraterrestrials keep you from reading this book! IMMACULATE DECEPTION is first-rate fiction that zooms from the oval office to hot spots around the world with insidious characters - like those out there today. Aside from the compelling story, issues of religion, loyalty and integrity become thought-provoking moral dilemmas, relevant to a world on the brink of chaos. Strikes very close to the state of the globe today. A great read!
