You may not have heard of the Linux Professional Institute (LPI) or its professional certifications, but they're becoming an important part of proving professional competence in the Linux operating system. That aside, LPI Linux Certification in a Nutshell is a fantastic introductory Linux book, well suited to introducing a curious newcomer to the environment and bringing an intermediate user up to expert status.

The book is organized around the LPI's published standards for two Level 1 exams (exams 101, which deals with key commands and file-system concepts, and 102, which places more emphasis on hardware, networking, and shell scripting). The organization works well even if you're not specifically preparing for either exam.

LPI Linux Certification in a Nutshell assumes nothing in early chapters, going so far--to cite one example--as to walk readers through the concept of commands with parameters separately from the concept of commands alone. Later, the pace picks up, and strategic advice is substituted (such as how to partition a disk for maximum speed and reliability) for "type-this" instructions.

Throughout, the book makes effective use of O'Reilly's time-tested and remarkably clear format for presenting Unix commands and configuration files. Each chapter concludes with a series of exercises designed to help you discover behaviors on your own, and includes the practice questions you expect in a test-prep aid. --David Wall

Topics covered: The knowledge that's tested on the Linux Professional Institute's exams 101 and 102, which includes everything from basic Linux commands and concepts to installation of the operating system, essential network configuration, and kernel recompilation.

Book Description

LPI Linux Certification in a Nutshell, Second Edition is an invaluable resource for determining what you need to practice to pass the Linux Professional Institute exams. This book will help you determine when you're ready to take the exams, which are technically challenging and designed to reflect the skills that administrators need in real working environments.

As more corporations adopt Linux as the networking backbone for their IT systems, the demand for certified technicians will become even greater. Passing the LPI exams will broaden your career options because the LPIC is the most widely known and respected Linux certification program in the world. Linux Journal recognized the LPI as the best Training and Certification Program. The exams were developed by the Linux Professional Institute, an international, volunteer-driven organization with affiliates in a dozen countries.

The core LPI exams cover two levels. Level 1 tests a basic knowledge of Linux installation, configuration, and command-line skills. Level 2 goes into much more depth regarding system troubleshooting and network services such as email and the Web. The second edition of LPI Linux Certification in a Nutshell is a thoroughly researched reference to these exams. The book is divided into four parts, one for each of the LPI exams. Each part features not only a summary of the core skills you need, but sample exercises and test questions, along with helpful hints to let you focus your energies.

Major topics include:

Praise for the first edition:
"Although O'Reilly's Nutshell series are intended as 'Desktop Reference' manuals, I have to recommend this one as a good all-round read; not only as a primer for LPI certification, but as an excellent introductory text on GNU/Linux. In all, this is a valuable addition to O'Reilly's already packed stable of Linux titles and I look forward to more from the author." --First Monday

I found this book is invaluable to learn all the ins and outs of Linux and administration. There may be better books to teach you how to take the LPI test but this book will last you thru your system admin career.

Folks,

The description from Amazon and the Editorial reviews are a cut/paste job, and they probably refer to the FIRST edition. I don't have much to say about the book (just received it), except I thought this might be useful:

As of June 2007, this book includes preparation for BOTH LPIC-1 AND LPIC-2 exams, i.e. exams 101, 102, 201, and 202.

So it's better than the description. I'm giving it 5 stars because you have to rate the book if you want the review published, and no O'Reilly product has ever disappointed me.

Enjoy :)

Book Description

In this engaging new book, Bob Deans introduces Americans to the James River, explaining its essential role in the shaping of modern America and helping readers to understand how much of who we are as a nation is rooted along its shores. iThe River Where America Begani takes readers on a journey along the James from the earliest days of civilization nearly 15,000 years ago through the English settlement at Jamestown and finishing with Lincoln's tour of the defeated capital of Richmond in 1865.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Wonderfully written.......2007-09-17

This is a wonderfully written, informative book that focuses on the history that happened on the James River from 1607 to 1865.

Like any good storyteller, Deans illuminates specific characters (John Smith, Pocahontas, Powhatan, Patrick Henry and Abraham Lincoln among them), to shed light on the whole. And the whole is this: That the two original sins of the American experiment -- our near-genocidal treatment of the Indians and our institution of black slavery -- began here, early in our formative years, on the banks of the James River in Virginia. At the very same time and in the very same place, began our very real belief in a democratic government of laws and not of men.

On this river was nurtured the the notion that all men were created equal, even as those who proclaimed liberty and equality denied it (and increasingly codified that denial) to a whole race of men and women.

That such schizophrenia of national psyche could not long endure seems obvious. And the fever that provided the cure finally broke here, too, on the banks of the James in April 1865.

This is a terrific book. However, the publisher, I believe, has let the writer down in two respects: It could use more maps. When Deans writes of someone rounding this point, exploring this tributary or inhabiting that island, I want to have a map close at hand to see for myself. There are a few maps, and they are good, but I would like more.

And here's a thing sure to rankle any West Virginian ex-copy editor: In the chapter on John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry (then Virginia, today West Virginia), it says he was hanged in nearby Charleston. As any Mountain Stater (and probably even some Virginians) know, Charleston, the state capital, is in the south central part of the state. Charles Town, where they have horse racing, is in the Eastern Panhandle. Charles Town is close to Harper's Ferry, not Charleston. (And as any newspaperman knows, Charleston, Charles Town is an AP Stylebook entry. I presume the error is an editor's and not Deans'.)

5 out of 5 stars Really Good.......2007-08-11

Hi,

I am reading this book right now and am on page 238 of 287. This is the most readable "history" book I have ever read. I would give it a 4 1/2 out of 5 really. He gets into the baptism of Pochohontas and gets a little sharp with the tongue. Don't pass up on this book though because of a few pages. Everyones opinion still matters. I do like how it's in a storybook format and I do like the authors opinion most of the time. I would say the book is 85% fact, %15 opinion.

Very knowledgable writer. A book that gives you the framework to be educated about American history in discussions with your friends. No thanksgiving story and they lived happily ever after. America was founded by immigrants and freedom fighters, criminals, slaves, and Native Americans obviously.

Thanks. God Bless.

Aaron.

5 out of 5 stars Reclaims your lack of American history knowledge.......2007-06-10

If you didn't take or do well in early American history class, this book will go a long way to help. Bob Deans, informatively and entertainingly, chronicles the first foreign footprints on American soil. In doing so, he sympathetically gives the natives their due, while exploring with reportorial acumen, the inexorable march, good and bad, toward democracy, all of which started "along the James," in Dean's beloved state.

5 out of 5 stars first democratic government in the USA was the House of Burgesses.......2007-05-26

And black slaves were in Jamestown before the Pilgrims landed in Mass.
Lively and instructive.
A fascinating book.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Readable Jamestown Book.......2007-05-16

If you only have time to read one Jamestown book, read this one. Deans gives a thorough history of the founding of Jamestown, puts it into historical context, both in terms of the English and the Native Americans (and not too much later, the Africans, who were essential to the success of the Virginia colony) with a style that is both poetic and crisp. He has a great ability to step back to assess the historic significance of the quotidian tasks of building a society in the New World, while also getting up close and personal with the very real human beings who built it. He covers a lot of ground while including colorful detail and character studies of John Smith, Pocahantas, Powhatan, and others. If you're going to visit the Jamestown area, this book is the ideal companion, because Deans also covers the area's role in the American revolution (Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson both had their roots along the James) and the Civil War, from early slave revolts to the fall of of the Confederate capital at Richmond. All in all, a joy to read.

5 out of 5 stars If you have an ERISA problem and don't know where to start.........2002-11-02

Ok. I already feel odd writing a review of this book. The anticipated audience is incredibly narrow and if you found this review, you probably know what you are looking for. However, I think this is one of the greatest books. As a law student who is planning on specializing in ERISA, this book has been an invaluable resource to me. It is the first place I turn when I have an ERISA question to research. It won't provide all the answers but puts a very complex statute into perspective. It would also benefit the non-lawyer who might be involved in benefits.

Book Description

Like a restless ghost, James Dean (1921-1955) continues to haunt us. Though he died nearly 50 years ago, the enigmatic star of East of Eden, Rebel without a Cause, and Giant still symbolizes the mystery and torment of adolescence-an image that his sudden, violent death fixed forever in the public mind.

Magnum photographer Dennis Stock met Dean in Hollywood in 1954 and began to capture him on camera. Shot over a three-month period just as the young actor's star began to rise, these iconic photographs are the greatest pictures ever taken of Dean. Together with Stock's text and an introduction by Dean biographer Joe Hyams, the images provide an extraordinarily intimate view of the cult legend whose brooding good looks captivated fans by illuminating the troubled depths of his character. Published on the 50th anniversary of his death, this is the definitive photographic portrait of James Dean in both his professional and his private worlds-the real man behind the lingering legend. AUTHOR BIO: Dennis Stock has been associated with Magnum Photos since 1951, and his photographs are in the collections of many major museums. Stock is the author of 16 books, including California Trip, on the surrealistic landscape of that state. He lives in Connecticut. Joe Hyams is the noted author of 28 books, among them James Dean: Little Boy Lost, the definitive Dean biography. Immediately after Dean's death, he was the first authorized by the actor's family to write about him.

5 out of 5 stars BLACK AND WHITE AND COOL.......2007-02-05

My good friend, Carole, sent me a copy of an official publication from a JAMES DEAN fan club. Inside was a lengthy story she had written recounting the 1988 trip that she and six other "die-hard Dean fans" (including Jimmy's boyhood friend, Bob Pulley) made to California, during which I escorted the group to several of the prominent Dean-related sites in Los Angeles. Happily reliving those days through Carole's recollections, I was inspired to lose myself in my copy of Dennis Stock's JAMES DEAN REVISITED. His JAMES DEAN: FIFTY YEARS AGO is essentially a special, retitled hardcover reissue with the photographs beautifully enlarged, and a few splendid ones previously unpublished now included.

My copy - a gift from my employer in 1993 - is inscribed, "To a fellow alien who straddles two worlds...the art is in the living." My magazine-publishing boss bought me the book, but being a major fan, naturally, this essential book for Dean fans was already in my bookcase. I subsequently gave away my older copy and kept his gift.

As a wannabe actor fresh out of high school in 1977 (Santa Monica High, coincidentally also known as Dawson High in REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE), I discovered Dean at a Fox Venice Theater showing of what I consider Dean's greatest film, EAST OF EDEN. This was before movies were available for purchase and home viewing. I was mesmerized then knocked out of my boots; everything struck a chord of harmony within me: the sense of youthful alienation; the brooding intensity; the moodiness; the frustration; the quest for meaning. I was hooked, and James Dean became my idol.

In September of 1980, I took my first extensive solo trip, flying into Indianapolis and then driving to Dean's hometown, Fairmount, for the festival honoring the 25th anniversary of his death. Through happenstance (?), I met Carole and her friend Russ (both would remain my very good friends). I'd heard that Martin Sheen was to attend the festival, and when Russ asked if I wanted to accompany them to the Indianapolis airport to pick up "Martin", I said, "Sure" - assuming that the "first name only" implied that this Martin was famous and a last name was unnecessary. It turned out to be Martin, hard-core fan flying in from England. (I'm still in touch with this non-Sheen "Martin", too.) Well, in the days that followed, my disappointment from the "Martin Mix-up" turned to elation when I discovered how well-connected my new friends were, and I found myself meeting Adeline Nall, Jimmy's high school drama teacher, and then getting a private tour of his boyhood farmhouse conducted by the aunt who raised him, Ortense Dean Winslow. I saw his motorcycle and leather motorcycle jacket, his bongo drum sitting quietly in the corner, and his childhood artwork hanging on his old bedroom walls. Very heady stuff for a young fan! (I've experienced so many strange "coincidences" in my 47 years that I'm not at all convinced this life is "real.")

Well, as the years wore on, I surprisingly lost interest in acting, and a series of spiritual episodes completely changed me and my world-view. I no longer idolize human beings, but I still recognize that James Dean was (and remains) the most imaginative, most innately gifted American actor. The direction hinted at in GIANT gives an indication of where he was pointed as an artist, and ultimately he would have emerged as a "giant" of a film director. He may have started life as a hayseed, ending it with a Turnupseed and with Life's promising highway left unexplored before him, but JAMES DEAN LIVES, both in his three films, and in these beautiful black and white photographs by the fine lensman, Dennis Stock.

Do you wish to see why the name James Dean turns up in the songs of Rock stars? (David Essex, Lou Reed, John Mellencamp, Ian Hunter, and The Eagles, to name but five.) Want to see why all the boys wanted to BE him, and all the girls wanted to BE WITH him? (As a female friend recently wrote regarding his performance in East Of Eden: "I think Dean also aroused a lot of maternal feelings with that performance. You're attracted to him, but you also want to mother him. What's a girl to do?") Well, it's all in these pages:

The Offbeat Humor: Encircled by calves and pigs, Jim sits with his bongo drum on a patch of ground on the family's farm and bangs out a "rhythm to moo and oink to."

The Bizarre Morbidity: Jimmy posing in a coffin at a Fairmount funeral home just 7 months before his corpse would be taken there.

More Bizarre Morbidity: Jim examining the chicken head held by a small, joyful girl loitering on a New York sidewalk, while the girl's older sister holds onto the leash of their disinterested dog.

The Eerily Mysterious: He sits dressed in coat and tie, reading a book in the farm's hayloft while light filtering in reveals him to be surrounded by spider web-sealed old trunks. (A dynamite piece of photography! Absolutely first-rate.)

The Classic Cool: James Dean marches through the city streets, cigarette dangling, and shoulders hunched in his overcoat against a Times Square rain.

The Ultimate Rebellion: An edgy Dean holding a gun point-blank on future president Ronald Reagan on the Hollywood set of the television play, THE DARK, DARK HOUSE.

These and so many more stellar shots - some posed and some candid - await the James Dean fan on thse pages. The decades have whittled down my once massive Dean collection to just a few portrait reproduction post cards sent to me by the late artist, Kenneth Kendall, who sculpted the actor's bust on display at The Griffith Park Observatory in L.A., and to this book of 1955 photographs by Dennis Stock. This should tell you plenty about the quality of these photos. Come and "see" the original Voice of teen angst, the red-jacketed rebel in glorious black and white.

4 out of 5 stars The Finest Photo Collection on James Dean.......2005-12-07

I owned Dennis Stock's 1980s collection of photos of Dean from his Life magazine days. This books is more than a re-release; Stock has a lot more written about his brief (friendly) relationship with Dean and the affect of Dean's death. Stock included previously unreleased pictures showing more of the young star's spirit and attitude. That is what this coffee table book is about: pictures. Stock's book, combined with George Perry's biography, make for the best written and pictoral chronicle on James Dean.

    Book Description

Why is this book called "3D Cheats"? Unlike committed 3D applications (like Maya, 3D Studio Max, Swift 3D), Flash MX doesn’t have an internal 3D engine, and therefore if a designer wants include realistic 3D effects in their Flash designs they must either import from one of these other 3D applications (can be complex, expensive, and time-consuming), or rely on "pseudo-3D" effects – 2D graphics rendered to mimic realistic 3D imagery. This book teaches users how to employ 3D principles without having to learn the official names for everything. Digital 3D is a tricky area – and until the day someone makes 3D TV commercially viable, it’s going to remain a tricky area. What is 3D? Can you genuinely render 3D on a flat screen? Do you have to spend a year’s wages to get a dedicated piece of 3D software? Do you have to conjure up a bunch of complex math techniques to make the grade? Is anyone going to answer these interminable questions? Well, listen: we’re not out to work ourselves into the ground here. We want 3D and we want it fast, and we want to use Flash to get it. In a series of clear and concise demonstrations, this book shows you exactly what can be achieved in Web 3D. Some of the most cunning designers around have put their heads together to present these: the most wanted 3D cheats in Flash.
This book will show you that you can:
    - Lie your way into 3D with simple drawing techniques.
    - Cheat a 3D interface with cunning use of light and shadow.
    - Fool Flash into thinking it can render genuine 3D, and con the Internet into delivering it for us in double-quick time.
    - Hoodwink visitors into thinking they’re witnessing focus and depth of field.
    - Improve your depth of deception with an innovative slice engine to create convincing 3D objects.
    - Trick users into thinking they’re moving through a 3D space.

I didnt buy this book to learn about flash coding, or web development. I bought this book because I am interested in Software rendered graphics. That is, applications that dont utalize OpenGL or Direct 3D for rendering to the screen. I bought this book for the techniques it discusses in "faking" 3d, and also producing real 3d. So far it has done a perfect job in giving me ideas and techniques that I can use in my applications. For anybody interested in producing anything that is real time, and 3d, I would reccomend this book.

5 out of 5 stars A work of art! Opens all new possibilities to script builders.......2005-09-12

This is the best book I have read in years! If you know the basics of ActionScript and you know sine and cosine, this book opens up whole dimensions of possibilities for both games and business applications of Flash.

It is clearly written and reads more smoothly than most programming books. While it does assume a basic literacy with ActionScript, it does not leave you flailing with complex 3D concepts. You may have to pull out your definitions of sine and cosine, but beyond that, it is pretty light lifting.

The genious of the book is that it violates commmon assumptions, and this results in simple, elegant techniques that are also powerful for a wide range of problems. The common assumption is that Flash doesn't do 3D. Don't believe it anymore. If you are willing to use some basic limitations to your application (such as keeping your polygon count down), you can have some smoothly flowing, useful 3D applications with relatively little effort. And unless I'm mistaken, those applications will run equally well on a browser running on a Mac, Windows or Linux.

The solutions are simple and eclectic. The authors have created a variety of 3D engines - each optimized for a given purpose. The engines are simple enough that (in theory) you can take the source and enhance it to your needs. Each technique is backed up by source code that you can download from the publisher's web site. But don't shortchange yourself with only the sample code - the explanations in the text are worth the cost of the paper book.

    Here are my favorite techniques:

    * ch 8 (P 195) - Drawing API and Math for 3D - here they explain and provide a working polygon 3D engine. The demos work smoothly (at least 20-30 frames per second) on my cheap Dell laptop. The demos include a oragami bird and a rocket ship with at least 10-20 polgons each. It doesn't support bitmapped textures, but it does offer fill color and shading support.

    * ch 9 - 3D Slice Engine - this is the more clever, powerful and non-obvious technique of the book. Check out "dad.swf" in the binary samples from the web site to get an idea of the power of this approach - the author has made a 3D talking head of his father from a photograph! The idea here is that if you can view your 3D world as a topographical map, then you can model it with a set of parallel planes, where each plane represents a certain cut through the entire 3D model. This approach, though not immediately intuitive, is extremely powerful in Flash because it plays on the strenghths of Flash. Each plane is represented by two "movieclip" objects, with one embedded in the other. The first one handles scaling, and the second handles rotation, within the scaled clip. The hidden surface problem is finessed because the planes are parallel - so you only reverse the rendering order once every 180 degrees of change in viewer angle. This enables you to handle full bitmap detail of your scenes, and the result is pretty dazzling! The basic rendering engine requires only about 50 lines of ActionScript!

    * Ch 6 - Parallax Scrolling - This name is misleading - it really goes beyond a scrolling 2D game model. In the Wyvern's Claw" example, it explores the idea of building a 3D world like a movie set - with a set of strategically placed flat surfaces (like the fronts of buildings in the studio sets). Each surface is a movieclip, and your script manages the proper scaling and shading as the viewer moves through. The demo then shows an animated walk-through of a small town rendering in such a way. This seems very cool for a potential game.

I'm already using the Chapter 9 slice engine for a work-related project - multidimensional data browsing. So for me, the book was not only stimulating to read but valuable!

5 out of 5 stars Trigonometry background required in some chapters.......2005-02-23

    TOC:

Chapter 1 Introduction to Flash 3D
    Chapter 2 Light and Shadow
    Chapter 3 Scaling for 3D
    Chapter 4 Isometric 3D
Chapter 5 Focus and Depth of Field
    Chapter 6 Parallax Scrolling
Chapter 7 Text Effects in 3D Space
Chapter 8 Drawing API and Math for 3D
    Chapter 9 3D Slice Engine
Chapter 10 Departure Lounge: Moving beyond Flash 3D

    Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 10 don't require a trigonometry
background. One of Chapter 6 topics uses XML though.

    The best chapters for me were 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6.

I gave the book 5 stars because it has something for everyone.
Some people use Flash to create digital art while others use it
for practical purposes. This book delivers to both people.
Unfortunately, I belong to the latter kind and some of the topics
    aren't for me.

I also think that some chapters are impractical unless you're
really a math geek. For example, I think Chapter 8 - Drawing
API and Math for 3D -- is unnecessary because you can import
    Swift 3D files.

Some of the authors also show you Actionscript without really
explaining what it does (I think they assume you do know trig).
I work for a software engineering firm (not as an engineer
though) but I do know that it's bad practice to embed magic
numbers -- literals that don't have apparent meaning -- in
any code. It's better to put them in constants.

One of the authors (the Chapter 4 author I think) said to get
a good book on trigo. I don't think I will because there are
plenty of free trigo tutorials on the web. I agree though that
to get the most out of Flash and this book, learning trigo is a
    must.

    5 out of 5 stars Good golly.......2003-12-02

This has to be about the best book I have ever seen. The 3D cheats in it are amazing -- and you surely wouldn't know you were cheating. There are some incredibly insightful techniques, and some more staple things if you're not quite steady on your feet yet.

I think I am, but this book showed me how much more there was to know!

    Book Description

Listed by Abraham Lincoln, alongside the Bible and Pilgrim’s Progress, as one of the books that most influenced his life, few true tales of adventure and survival are as astonishing as this one. Shipwrecked off the western coast of North Africa in August of 1815, James Riley and his crew had no idea of the trials awaiting them as they gathered their beached belongings. They would be captured by a band of nomadic Arabs, herded across the Sahara Desert, beaten, forced to witness astounding brutalities, sold into slavery, and starved. Riley watched most of his crew die one by one, killed off by cruelty or caprice, as his own weight dropped from 240 pounds to a mere 90 at his rescue. First published in 1817, this dramatic saga soon became a national bestseller with over a million copies sold. Even today, it is rare to find a narrative that illuminates the degradations of slave existence with such brutal honesty.

5 out of 5 stars Slavery and Racism from the Eyes of a Shipwrecked White-Man.......2007-05-09

Travel back to the mindset of the early 19th century, when racism was the rule and God was thought to intercede on the behalf of white men shipwrecked in the midst of savage brown men. The first few chapters are hard to believe. However, if you assume that James Riley is honestly recounting what he believes happened to him, the story exposes the background of racist, Eurocentric, and religious bigotry that soaked American and European thought of that era.

Despite the difficult to swallow constant referrals to the general color of skin of each an every character Captain Riley encounters, as well as his unbelievable description of "savage" Africans as "orangutan-like" beasts, the book is a compelling read that you will not be able to put down. While Riley never overcomes his racism towards the darker Africans, the story reveals a transformation in his estimation of Arabs and Muslims which is instructive in our present era where Arabs and Muslims are denigrated and misunderstood.

If you love a book you cannot put down, this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars The best USA Guide Book ever!.......2006-07-25

I'm surprised to read all the bad reviews the Lonely Planet US guide book gets at Amazon. My only explanation (after reading, using and enjoying this guide book for the last 2 years) is the tremendous lack of sense of humour americans have about themselves! The Book is FULL of valuable information the conscientious, adventureous traveller wishing to explore, experiment, and know, will certainly appreciate! Lonely Planet provides valuable tips for off the track interesting places, museums, restaurants, cafes, neigborhoods, as well as an infinite number of interesting anecdotes about the places their culture and history. Nationalistic americans who don't seem to find a single flaw in their behaviour will find it tedious or even hurtful, but I'm sure many americans can take a good laugh about themselves and appreciate the humour but specially the tips and fun this book provides. Lonely Planet can be blunt saying things, and every single of their guide books is this way, no matter if the country is European, South American, African, etc! Europeans are more used to laughing at their own idiosyncracies than americans are, and there lies the big difference of how you will take the book. Simply, enjoy it while you can; there is no better travelling guide book than lonely planet, guaranteed! Highly recommended!

1 out of 5 stars sparse information that is not accurate.......2003-10-10

We bought this book as a resource for a cross country trip. I browsed this book before purchasing, and the maps and national park info really sold me. I even looked up my area ( which is a tourist beach town ) to see what they had to say. I was not impressed, but I chalked that up to the fact that we live in a remote tourist area.

I have several major issues with this book, which are explained in the introduction ( If only I had read it before I bothered to pack this worthless book ).

The writers have not traveled to all of the towns, cities or regions in the book. You will find some actual travel advice for places they have visited. But even that is worthless, since they point you towards "trendy" spots that have long past gone out of favor.

The reference information is so dated that it is worthless. Prices and basic information is incorrect, and I have the revised edition. I would make advanced reservations based on advice in this book. Odds are they have never seen the place or even been to the town. ( they mention this fact in the introduction, I should have started at page one.).

The book lacks practical travel tips you really need in some regions of the US.

2 out of 5 stars Don't be a lonely backpacker skip the book, talk to others.......2003-05-05

Don't be a lonely backpacker skip this book and talk to other backpackers instead as you travel. You will get much better and more accurate information from people who have just been there....

This book doesn't include everything it should and has been drastically thickened with a lot of [info] backpackers don't need to know and more importantly do not want to carry the weight of those pages around.

Who cares about restaurants, hotels and other places backpackers are unlikely to go. More supermarket listings would be more helpful and pointing out when what is listed is a 7 Eleven, Spar, Quix type place and not actually a supermarket would also be good as these places aren't budget friendly.

The information on the actual towns, cities and national parks listed is ever increasing which is good but the number of places is fast declining especially the limited Canadian ones it has (a lot more pages used to be devoted to Canada).
If it's just background information you want to plan your trip you may be better off getting a version from a few year ago. ..For an overview of the USA and Canada this should concentrate on having as many places as possible not just the main ones. The whole differentiation of backpackers from tourists is that we see places package tours don't go. Who is going to carry around 50 or so Lonely Planet books and for the money spent on the books you will spend more than your entire trip.

While this book is good to find the location of hostels that's about it. Prices of course go up the day after the book is published. ...you're better off to go by word of mouth from other backpackers to find quality hostels. ...

Buy this book if you know nothing about where you are going and read it on the train/bus before getting there but don't have it out when you arrive or you'll be hassled by homeless people and be a target for thieves. You should always look like you know exactly where you are going when you arrive somewhere, it's way safer that way.

2 out of 5 stars VERY LITTLE IMPROVEMENT OVER THE LAST EDITION.......2002-12-21

As somebody who has a good knowledge of U.S. Geography (and History), I will not condemn this book too much. However, I will not rate it high. Its "updated information" is more or less superficial. Except for the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, there is no grounded addition or remarkable improvement over the last edition. I was disappointed to observe that most other updatable facts and figures remained unchanged. Anyone who already has the previous edition shouldn't consider buying this one. Donate the dough to charity; or do something else with it. 'September 11' is the only big deal here!

4 out of 5 stars New edition is better.......2002-12-17

I just wanted to point out that most of these poor reviews are based on the first edition. The new one is obviously more up to date and is more polished than the last edition.

    Book Description

They were the unlikeliest of pairs—a handsome crooner and a skinny monkey, an Italian from Steubenville, Ohio, and a Jew from Newark, N.J.. Before they teamed up, Dean Martin seemed destined for a mediocre career as a nightclub singer, and Jerry Lewis was dressing up as Carmen Miranda and miming records on stage. But the moment they got together, something clicked—something miraculous—and audiences saw it at once.

Before long, they were as big as Elvis or the Beatles would be after them, creating hysteria wherever they went and grabbing an unprecedented hold over every entertainment outlet of the era: radio, television, movies, stage shows, and nightclubs. Martin and Lewis were a national craze, an American institution. The millions (and the women) flowed in, seemingly without end—and then, on July 24, 1956, ten years from the day when the two men joined forces, it all ended.

After that traumatic day, the two wouldn’t speak again for twenty years. And while both went on to forge triumphant individual careers—Martin as a movie and television star, recording artist, and nightclub luminary (and charter member of the Rat Pack); Lewis as the groundbreaking writer, producer, director, and star of a series of hugely successful movie comedies—their parting left a hole in the national psyche, as well as in each man’s heart.

In a memoir by turns moving, tragic, and hilarious, Jerry Lewis recounts with crystal clarity every step of a fifty-year friendship, from the springtime, 1945 afternoon when the two vibrant young performers destined to conquer the world together met on Broadway and Fifty-fourth Street, to their tragic final encounter in the 1990s, when Lewis and his wife ran into Dean Martin, a broken and haunted old man.

In Dean & Me, Jerry Lewis makes a convincing case for Dean Martin as one of the great—and most underrated—comic talents of our era. But what comes across most powerfully in this definitive memoir is the depth of love Lewis felt, and still feels, for his partner, and which his partner felt for him: truly a love to last for all time.

5 out of 5 stars Dean and Me: (A Love Story).......2007-10-05

Being a long-time fan of Mr. Lewis, I may be considered biassed in writing this review. Honestly, I read this book with an open mind with no tendency of leaning to Mr. Lewis over Mr. Martin.

Mr. Lewis opens his heart and mind in this bio of being one half of a famous duo. He does not gloss over his short-comings nor those of Mr. Martin's.

The book is humorous, tragic and insightful into the lives of two 'regular' guys that come together and become a world-wide sensation.

Thank you Mr. Lewis for your straight forward approach to your life and Mr. Martin's. Thank you for the many years of happiness you have given your fans. Your gift of humor has sustained many throughout the years.

5 out of 5 stars It was always love.......2007-09-15

I grew up loving the Martin and Lewis movies, so reading Jerry's account of their ten years together brought back a lot of good memories. From their first chance meeting, Jerry was in awe of the charming Dean, and spent years trying to impress him and feel equal to him. After hectic early years playing night clubs, the duo found huge success in Hollywood, but mutual jealousy and the basic differences in their personalities eventually led to a bitter break-up. Years later, distance and maturity made a reconciliation possible for both.

Jerry speaks of his undying admiration for his partner's showbiz talents and unflappable coolness, yet sadly describes Dean as a man incapable of deep, intimate friendship who was ultimately quite sad and lonely. This is an entertaining and touching tribute to the man Jerry always wished was his big brother.

    5 out of 5 stars Moving..and very, very sad.......2007-09-08

I don't like to admit it but the last few chapters really got to me. This book is about love and loss of the deepest and truest kind. My admiration for Jerry Lewis has gone through the roof for sharing his deep affection for his partner who, in an emotional sense, was the love of his life. One of the biggest revelations of this book is the scope of Dean Martin's talent. I remember him primarily as a 'crooner' who was Jerry's straight man, but he was much more. He had a complex personality which made it very difficult for people to get close to him. Jerry tried as best he could and to a certain extent succeeded, but some people's psychological knots are tied so tight that they never quite allow themselves to connect to the outside world. I have this sad image of Dean dining alone in his late sixties when Jerry runs into him in an LA restaurant. Jerry tries his best to reconnect with his ex-partner but still is understanding enough to know that Dean is uncomfortable with direct assaults on his cultivated privacy. And yet you sense that Dean too wants to be with his former partner and best friend. What can I say? People are there own worst enemies.

5 out of 5 stars Warm, honest and wonderful!.......2007-08-07

For starters: I've never been much of a Martin & Lewis fan - HOWEVER - I have always had a lot of respect for them. Even when I was a child, I would watch them, and deep inside, I knew there was a reason why I was so taken by them.
This is a joyous book to read, and it is a beautiful testimony to when it's right - it's right. Mr. Lewis is honest in all categories and he really shows what he and Mr. Martin had was really something special. In addition, Jerry (of course) will be Jerry, and there is a little pun he writes in the book. I read it, and thought, "well, okay..." Then, just under an hour later - I GOT IT! - and I was laughing myself to tears!
These guys had something very special, and I am very thankful that Jerry Lewis had the open heart to write about it.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart Jerry! You're the Best!:)

    5 out of 5 stars great book.......2007-07-24

I loved this book. It takes us into an era that really is quite fabulous, through the eyes of somebody who lived it.

This book is quite useful for writing researcher paper on language curriculum or program evaluation. It is academically valuable, but it is also easily understandable for everyone because the language is not diffcult at all. It has good literature review of related topics. It also includes real examples of some ESL programs in the US. This books helped me a lot to write a research paper on a langauge course evaluation. It is good for individual use as well as a textbook for any graduate courese of curriculum development or evaluation. Plus, the layout of this book is pretty pleasant.
