Book Description
Used to be my greatest achievement was holding a job more than three days. Now suddenly I can shoot fireballs, chill your drink or blow-dry your hair at fifty paces with a blink of my eye!
It all started when this crazy scientist dropped something in my Grande Mocha Latte.
Of course I got wicked sick.
Next morning I'm waking up with this total hottie bending over me.
He tells me
1) his name's Rome Masters,
2) he's a government agent and
3) I can control the four elements with a thought.
He seems even less pleased by my (apparently irreversible) transformation than I am
. Because now he'll have to kill me.

Wonderfully Delectable.......2007-10-03
I found this book to be a great read. A Mix of all kinds of genre as well as Adult, it flows together very nicely. I recommend this book to anyone who likes some action, love, and naughtiness woven together with clever humor.
Fast, fun romp with super powers.......2007-09-18
How would you like to go to sleep tonight as your same old self, but wake up tomorrow with super powers?
That's what happens to Belle Jamison. A girl with a snippy tongue and a hard time keeping a job, but with a heart of gold, gets unknowingly dosed with a "secret formula" that turns her into a weather wizard, able to affect all four elements, depending on how she feels at the moment.
This book starts off a little rough, seeming to aim more for clever quips than developing characters, but smooths out as it gets going. Belle, the heroine, remains smart-mouthed throughout, but begins to seem less like a cardboard cutout and more like a real person as things progress.
The hero - Rome Masters - is quite drool worthy and apparently somewhat of a saint, as he puts up with Belle's childish behavior and gives her the benefit of the doubt until she starts to shape up.
The whole thing improves quite a bit once you get into the meat of the story - Belle learning to control her powers, chasing down the bad guy, saving the world - you know, the usual - and ultimately turns into a pretty fun romp through super power land.
I wouldn't call this an award winner by any stretch of the imagination, nor is the premise especially creative. But overall, it was a fun and lighthearted story that kept me pretty well entertained with moments of outright laughter. An interesting enough book to encourage me to give this author another go next time I'm at the book store.
Gena Showalter.......2007-09-18
Picked this book up on a whim and after reading it I went out and bought all of her others. Laugh out loud funny!
Super Reader.......2007-08-31
A slacker waitress has an encounter with a scientist, and this leaves her with the beginnings of the development of elemental superpowers.
She then comes into contact with an agent for the OASS, who tells her what has happened to her, and what the story will be from now on. He, of course, is no normal guy, being a superhuman shapeshifter himself. Naturally, he also gives her the horn, but has an ex-wife and kid to complicate matters.
Showalter seems to be able to put a bit more depth of plot into her books than some, that makes it easier to take.
Blah.......2007-08-23
The book, for me, started out badly. Belle's interactions with her customers were painful. Belle was incompetent, but then seemed surprised when her customers were upset. And the customers were unrealistically rude.
Belle's whole attitude bothered me. She was concerned about her father and being able to provide for him, but couldn't keep a job for more than a couple weeks. And her reasoning for her inability to hold down a job - dissatisfaction with her life - was flimsy.
I just couldn't make myself care for Belle, and while the storyline was ok, it didn't make up for my annoyance with Belle.

Most people know the work of theater director Julie Taymor, if they know it at all, from her hit adaptation of Walt Disney's The Lion King for the Broadway stage. But this gorgeous book, a pictorial history of the artist's career, demonstrates that for the past 25 years Taymor has been creating original works of theater that combine a stunning visual sense with an extensive knowledge of the performance styles of many countries outside the West. Theater critic and scholar Eileen Blumenthal has followed the work of Taymor almost since its very beginnings, and her lengthy critical assessment of this inspired artist's work combines interviews with the director with a cogent analysis of her intellectual development and cultural sources.
From her days as a teenager studying the people and theater of Bali to her travels in Japan, Europe, and then back to New York, Taymor has reveled in the cross-fertilization of different images and ideas from a wide variety of countries. Her critically lauded piece The Transposed Heads, for example, was adapted from a Thomas Mann novella that was itself based on an ancient Indian folktale. Unlike most directors, Taymor came from the world of the designer, and it was her exquisite work creating costumes, masks, and puppets that first launched her into work in the theater. But gradually she gained the respect of actors as well, and now is regarded as a director of uncommon sensitivity, who can pull performances from a cast that match in intensity her phenomenal visual eye.
Lavishly illustrated with color and black and white photographs, this is a fitting tribute to a woman who, still in her 40s, is nothing short of a theatrical prodigy. As Taymor moves further into the world of commercial theater and film (her upcoming cinematic production of Titus, starring Anthony Hopkins and Jessica Lange and adapted from her own stage production of Titus Andronicus, opens soon), more audiences than ever will be treated to her extraordinary work. --John Longenbaugh

A Rare Book for a Rare Artist.......2001-10-27
I bought this book after looking at a friend's copy, and I can say that this was one of the finest investments in my Theatre Arts library that I have ever made. This book is filled with brilliant pictures and vivid writing that will keep many in awe and almost child-like wonder at the genious of Ms. Taymore. This isn't just a book for those that appreciate theatre - I suggest it for anyone who is interested in puppetry or film, not to mention anyone who can appreciate art in general.
Playing With Fire proves Julie Taymor's extreme brilliance!.......2000-04-27
I have been in love with theatre for a long time. Many musicals I see and enjoy, buy the CD and just listen to that. Others blow me away. Those that have that capacity I tend to investigate and become obsessed with. The Lion King was one of them. I soon became fascinated and extremely appreciative of Julie Taymor's work and pure brilliance in musical theatre, opera, and film. This book highlights every show that Julie has been involved with for her 20 years in the performing arts business. This wonderful book illustrates what true theatre is! Julie is too amazing for any human language too describe; even emotion can't portray my love and idolism for this excruciatingly wonderful woman! Anybody who loves theatre, whether it is film, opera, musical or non-musical, you will be able to love and appreciate this book for all eternity.
I love this book so much that I would dare to give it infinite stars. Now imagine this, if there were such a number, I'd give the music from these shows infinitely infinite stars!
Now, more to the book. It starts out with a quick overview of her work. Then we get into the real meat. There are pictures (both of the show and backstage!) from each and every single of her shows. Included are some original sketches of costumes, masks, and puppets. Along with the pictures are writings by both Julie Taymor and Eileen Blumenthal. This is an extravagant work of art in itself that all should have their eyes glued onto...buy it now! Also buy everything you can find that relates to Ms. Taymor. You will be fascinated! The only regret I now have is that I didn't live in Europe and Asia to see her other fascinating shows...
Hail Taymor! I will look forward to all of your work in the future!
Lastly, if anyone finds the film Fool's Fire (by Taymor), PLEASE! E-mail me at Cepheus9@aol.com...I want to buy it SO badly!
Playing with fire -- Playing with imagination.......2000-01-23
A facinating insight into the mind of one of the great contempary designers. A must have for all theatrically minded people. The book takes you through the creative process to achieving such powerful and passionfilled productions such as The Lion King. Disney would have flopped without Julie Taymor.

To a mainstream theater world startled by the design and staging brilliance of The Lion King, Julie Taymor seems to have landed like a meteor. But as this handsome coffee-table volume attests, she's been a master of masks and puppets for 20 years, spending most of that time creating idiosyncratic visions in fringe theaters. But all of the elements have been brewing: the mythic puppets in Way of Snow, grotesque masks in The King's Stag, and the human/animal connection in Juan Darien are all evidence of Taymor's talent. Consider Playing with Fire to be her playbook for future endeavors.

The AMAZING Taymor!.......1999-12-03
I had always understood poetry to be an experience involving words, but even experiencing the frozen images of Julie Taybor's work was an indescribably moving experience. I could absolutely understand by the images how much more ALIVE her creations would be when manipulated on the stage. Being exposed to the work of Julie Taymor has been one of the most important experiences of my year.
Uh Oh, I'm now a fan of Julie Taymor.......1998-03-20
I've just finished 'The Lion King, on Broadway' book. That's just whet my appetite to go out and 'put on a show'. This book was my next step and boy, I wasn't disappointed! 'Playing with Fire' is a truly splendid book, chronicalling the vocational, personal and thoroughly creative life of Ms.Taymor. The photos are dramatic as well as detailed and along with her conceptual costume sketches, the book is perfect for reference, inspiration and motivation for all you wannabe designers out there. I really admire this woman, what she has done with her life, the belief in herself and of how she surpasses herself with each new project. This book is a must for anyone who needs that extra motivational push once in a while when they are struggling as a designer, actor, or any vocation that involves loving what you do.
A lush and sensual introduction to a gifted artist.......1997-01-18
A big book overflowing with big ideas as conceived and breathed life into by America's most unique theatre artist. This is a volume to read, to reread, to spark your imagination and to put on your coffee table to look at the cool pictures. The only thing more you could wish for is if Julie herself could make a home visit when you bought the book

Playing with fire.......2006-02-05
Having read several of Jay Carty's books now I have to say he is an incredibly inspiring writer and person to say the least. I am so excited each month as I check for new "stuff" from Jay Carty as it is always refreshing and different yet always connected to God with a three stranded cord. If you haven't been a reader of his books for long there are many to choose from and this writer never stops searching for Gods will in his daily efforts to continue to provide hearty reading material for all groups and all stages from salvation, and growth to a mature level of one's spiritual walk. I highly recommend anything he puts his hands on because I know the hand of God is on him. Some of what I have read and or listened to on tape are:"Discovering your natural talents", "Counter Attack: taking back ground lost to sin", "Playing with fire", "Something's fishy Getting rid of the carp in your life","Coach Wooden One on One", "Coach Wooden's Piramid of success", Darrell Waltrip - One on One, "Mike Singletary- One on One" all keeping me captivated from cover to cover!

Seeking TRUTH about Eternity? Try this book by Jay Carty.......2002-02-12
Do your eyes glaze over when important issues are discussed by theologians, even though you REALLY DO want to know the Truth. In "Playing With Fire," Jay Carty gets to the heart of the issue of our eternal destiny without transporting the reader into the seminary classroom. At the same time, he is biblically accurate and pulls no punches. He is non-offensive with this subject that can so easily offend. If the non-Christian is wanting to intellectually pursue an understanding of basic Christian motives, this book will move him or her a good way down the road; it is foundational in many ways. For Christians yearning for solid answers on Heaven and Hell, but are confused by mushy, non-answers (or total avoidance of the subject) coming from the pulpit, give this book a try. I am disappointed that the book is out of print and could only find one in the Amazon Used Book Section; it should be made available to a dying World by everyone who has a copy and is finished reading it.
Should be beside the Bible in every hotel and motel........1999-06-21
This is a book for Believers. This is a book for Non-believers. Almost believers, just about believers and wish I could believeres are the main targets. The ammo? Gems right from the Word. This is a book for anyone that may not feel uncomfortable finding themselves knelling beside the bed(I like to read in bed). It's a book you'll want to give to a fiend,it's a book you'll have to give. I know, I've given three copies.
Powerfull!.......1999-06-07
This book is a must read for every part-time Christian. It has biblical references and uses many great analogies. The writer uses his since of humor which adds to this informative and interesting book. I will be buying this book for many of my friends; it is a great gift for any Christian.

One of the principle pleasures to be found in reading any of Peter Robinson's more recent British suspense novels is to see how dexterously this author uses seemingly small, confined crimes to wedge open much larger troves of hidden or historical chicanery. In Playing with Fire, the plot catalyst is a blaze that consumes two rotting barges moored in a Yorkshire canal, killing their squatter inhabitants--Tina Aspern, a pretty, teenage heroin abuser, and Thomas McMahon, a once-promising but "derivative" landscape painter who'd fallen on hard times. Accident or arson? The best suspects, in either event, may be Tina's cheating boyfriend, Mark Siddons, and a rumored peeping tom who'd taken his time--and more--reporting the conflagration. However, as Detective Chief Inspector Alan Banks and his colleague and ex-lover, Annie Cabbot (both last seen in Close to Home), gather together the disparate threads of this case, new questions arise, suggesting that the inferno was intended to cover up still worse misdeeds. Why, for instance, had McMahon been buying old books and prints from an Eastvale antiquarian dealer? Is it true, as an angry Siddons alleges, that Tina had turned to drugs in order to blot out the pain of her stepfather's carnal advances? And what tie, if any, is there between these boat burnings and the subsequent torching of a trailer home occupied by a "quiet bloke," who perished while in possession of an unknown and potentially valuable J.M.W. Turner watercolor?
As attentive as Robinson is to plot progression, spicing up his narrative with arcane knowledge about fire accelerants and competition in the painting biz ("The art world's brutal," Banks is warned early on in this story), he doesn't forget that a substantial part of the attraction of this series derives from its two evolving main characters. The contemplative, jazz-loving Banks, worried by the superficiality of his latest relationship, with a "wounded" fellow cop, finds himself increasingly jealous here of Annie's suave new boyfriend, an art researcher whose past may be short a few brushstrokes. At the same time, Annie is drawn hesitantly closer again to Banks by tragic circumstances. Although Robinson's subplot about Tina's sexual violation concludes in a rather B-movieish way, Playing with Fire is redeemed by its scorching climax and suggestively ragged denouement. Peter Robinson, together with Ian Rankin, Reginald Hill, and others, is reinvigorating the British police procedural. --J. Kingston Pierce
Book Description
Fire. It violently destroys futures and pasts in a terrified heartbeat, devouring damning secrets while leaving even greater mysteries in its foul wake of ash and debris.
The night sky is ablaze as fire engulfs two barges moored end to end on a Yorkshire canal. On board are the blackened remains of two human beings. One was a reclusive and eccentric local artist, the other a junkie, a sad and damaged young girl.
To the seasoned eye of Inspector Alan Banks, this horror was no accident, its method so cruel and calculated that only the worst sort of fiend could have committed the dark act. And it isn't long before the fears of Banks and D.I. Annie Cabbot are brutally confirmed, when another suspicious blaze incinerates a remote trailer in the countryside . . . and another solitary life is gruesomely consumed.
But is it the work of a serial arsonist, or an ingeniously conceived plot to obliterate the trail to other heinous crimes? There are shocking secrets to be uncovered in the charred wreckage, grim evidence of lethal greed and twisted hunger, and of nightmare occurrences within the private confines of family. A terrible suspicion that a killer's work is not yet done drives Alan Banks as the hunt intensifies for an elusive, cold-blooded chameleon who could be anyone and anywhere.
In Playing with Fire, award-winning, internationally bestselling author Peter Robinson delivers a modern masterwork of suspense that confirms his standing as one of the brightest literary lights in crime fiction -- a blistering tale of murder and betrayal that is as frightening, devastating, and hypnotic as flame itself.

Inspector Banks Novels are Always Worth Reading.......2007-04-27
Peter Robinson grew up in Yorkshire, and is the author of a number of previous novels featuring Inspector Banks. He is the winner of numerous awards in the United States, Britain and Canada, and in 2002 he won the CWA Dagger in the Library. As I also come from Leeds the background to his stories is something that I have experienced first hand and because of this I have a special affection for his books. However they would be first class crime fiction wherever they were based.
It is the early hours of a bitterly cold January day, and two narrow boats are ablaze on a dead-end stretch of the Eastvale canal, a job for the fire brigade, but when signs of arson are discovered at the scene DCI Banks and DI Annie Cabbot are called to the crime scene. By the time they get there very little is left of the boats apart from some smoldering wreckage but more importantly human remains have been found in both boats.
The signs point to a deliberate attack, but on who or what. Tom an artist who lived a quiet existence lived on one of the boats and Tina, a sixteen year old girl, hooked on drugs and living with her boyfriend lived on the other. Did either of them have enemies? Someone who was prepared to commit murder and in such a cruel way.
As Banks becomes more involved in the case he realises that there are a number of people acting suspiciously out of character. Then the arsonist strikes again and Banks begins to realise that he is going to be tested to the limit with this case.
Little Spark, No Fire (Spoiler Attached).......2007-02-25
This is sub-par Robinson, with ho-hum crimes and a culprit who couldn't be more obvious if he waved a red flag in Inspector Bank's face and yelled "I did it, I did it!" To the author's credit, he has Banks catch on soon after the reader, but with half the book to go at that point, there's little reason to keep reading. One hopes that perhaps there will be some amazing twist at the end to confound everyone's expectations -- but no such luck. I'm going to keep with the series because by this time Banks is an old friend, and any time spent with an old friend is worthwhile, regardless of how predictable he's become. Also, Robinson's writing is terrific; I just wish his plotting had been better this time around.
Peter Robinson Triumphs Again.......2007-02-16
In my view, Peter Robinson is one of our greatest writers of detective fiction: in his Alan Banks' novels, he has created a complex, interesting man struggling with his issues. I am reading all of his Alan Banks novels chronologically, which I recommend because he refers to prior events in Banks' life, events that will not be as meaningful to the reader if he has not read the prior novels. In "Playing with Fire" Robinson intrigues us with a series of fires that have claimed lives. Are we dealing with an arsonist or could these fires be cleverly planned attempts to murder the victims? As Banks pursues his investigation, the reader is swept up in exciting events, one of which almost costs Banks his life. Robinson is in top form here as we join him in unravelling a fascinating mystery and in further developing the pains and pleasures of Banks' life in Yorkshire.
Playing with Fire.......2007-01-15
Item received in a timely manner and as described. Great and easy shopping.
Audio CD Version.......2006-10-20
Peter Robinson is one of my favorite mystery writers. I am now trying to get through the audio cd version of Playing with Fire. The narrator, as I can picture him, is speaking with the spittle collecting and the corners of his mouth. His attempt at portraying the characters' voices is pathetic. He should just read it straight out as his "normal" voice is not bad at all. The story will be good, I know, but have to suffer through this reading may not be worth it.
Book Description
Daily headlines and news stories remark upon the growing economic might of China. Analysts note that this increasing economic influence will undoubtedly lead to increasing political engagement on a global level. It is clear that the United States can no longer ignore what Napoleon called "the sleeping giant." One of the most pressing issues for China--and the world at large--is the continuing presence of an independence-minded Taiwan off China's southern coast. Recent modernization efforts within the Chinese military and tough remarks by Chinese officials have alarmed many in Washington, and caused others to question America's commitments in the region. Copper details events of recent decades to give the reader a complete picture of potential flash points concerning Taiwan. An expert who has studied the region for more than thirty years, he saw firsthand the turmoil that followed the recent Taiwanese elections. Drawing upon his interdisciplinary research on the political, economic, and military issues surrounding the U.S.-Taiwan-China triangle, he assesses the various aspects of this complex relationship and comments on what may come from "playing with fire."

A must read by all!!.......2007-09-30
This book is amazing! It pulls the reader in and hangs on! You will likely not be able to put it down until it is read. It is an easy read yet well written. It holds real world events including political agendas and the personal life of a city office member. PLEASE BUY TWO COPIES!! One for you and one for a friend!!
Excellent Book.......2005-11-19
I had to read this book for a State and Local Gov't course in colleg. Most books that are required tend to be dry. This book defies that concept. Scott does an excellent job decribing the in's and out's of local government through the eyes of a city manager. He does a good job of keeping the reader's attention throughout the novel. Must Read if your interested in government the slightest bit.
Well written.......2002-07-31
This is a well written novel. Lazenby knows his subject well. He understand the politics. I had intended to read this on my vacation. I was going to read just the first three pages. I got hooked and finished the book. It may seem hard to believe but this is a very exciting novel about local government. I recommend this book to any that have interest in government, politics, policy-- or just want an interesting novel to read. I hope Lazenby continues to write.
Engagingly entertaining, realistic, and educational.......2002-01-17
A novel about being a city manager sounded like a formula for pure boredom -- and I have experience as a local elected official and teach public policy. I am glad that I felt "duty bound" to read this book, it is extraordinarily well done. Lazenby masterfully creates a complex, multi-tiered plot involving all of the complexity and many of the issues faced by local governments today. Even a casual reader who simply wants to get a sense of what really happens at City Hall everyday will be well rewarded with both information and entertainment by this book.

Sweet Valley High #3 - Playing With Fire.......2005-08-12
This was definitely one of the better sweet valley high books that I read. Jessica Wakefield finally catches Bruce Patman's eye, one of the wealthiest (and not to mention snobbiest) guys in Sweet Valley High. She has had a crush on him for a long time, and now that Bruce starts showing interest in her, she goes out with him everywhere, and does whatever he tells her to do. Elizabeth starts getting worried because Jessica starts getting a change of attitude. But how can she convince Jessica that Bruce is a traitor, when Jessica worships him like a God? Apart from this, there are also side storylines in this book such as Tony Conover, who claims to be a representative for an agency and wants to make `The Droids' (sweet valley high's music band) famous. But the members of the group, start fighting over their priorities after this. Also Todd and Elizabeth try to set up Robin and Winston together, since Robin has a crush on him.
The main reason I liked this book was because we get to see Jessica Wakefield change her attitude from ordering everyone to taking orders from someone. You would never think that Jessica would sink so low, but that's exactly what happens in this book.
I also liked the character of Robin, and how clueless she is about being Jessica's friend. She is one of the main characters in the next book of the series `Power Play'. All in all, this was a fun read.
A VERY GOOD BOOK!.......2005-02-21
I loved this book! In this one Jessica falls for the handsome, rich Bruce Patman. What Bruce wants he gets and he wants Jessica. Jessica's selfish ways gets her in alot of trouble. Blowing off her friends, being Bruces slave, even cheating on a test! I couldint put this book down it was so good! Elizabeth dosent like Bruce. She thinks he is arrogant, demanding, and goes way to fast in realtionships. Will Elizabeth convince Jessica that shes totally wrong about Bruce? You will have to read to find out!
Ha,Ha on YOU, Jessica Wakefield! (**1/2).......2003-08-24
When Jessica finally gets Wealthy, Handsome Bruce Patman, she becomes his Love Slave, running his errands and attending to his personal matters, something she's NEVER been for a boy. Twin Sister Elizabeth can't stand to see her in this state, and tries to talk her out of the relationship, but Jessica is Convinced Bruce loves her. When she finally sees what a jerk he really is when she catches him with another girl, she humiliates him, leaving him a mess. The thing is though, Jessica really got what she Deserved. Shes been doing the same things to guys all her life! Now SHE knows how it feels! Of Course that doesnt Stop Her from ordering Robin Wilson around in the Next Book...
A dynamite book for teens!.......2001-12-04
In this Sweet Valley High fiction, Francine Pascal captures the true difference between identical twins. Though the Wakefield sisters look exactly alike, Elizabeth and Jessica are two completely different people. Jessica is the popular cheerleader and Elizabeth is the smart and sophisticated one. At the Sweet Valley High Homecoming dance, Jessica, the queen, finds herself dancing in the arms of rich Bruce Patman, a boy with a bad reputation. Soon Jessica begins to spends every waking moment with Bruce. Elizabeth, however, realizes the game that Patman's playing on Jessica. But, the question is, will it be too late before Jessica catches on?
Playing With Fire definetly shows what high school is like through the eyes of a teenager. It's really a great book. I recommend this book to any girl who enjoys reading books about the teenage years and high school, and I guarantee they'll love the book!
Kate William does it again...and that isnt good.......2001-08-03
