Not only is this book beautiful, Ruth Lilly Westphal created an important, highly useful educational and in my opinion an essential reference tool for art students, collectors, dealers and art historians interested in the California "Plein Air" art movement. It features generous artists biographies along with rich examples of each artist's works. As one of California's foremost buyers of California Impressionist paintings, I highly recommend this book! www.LawrenceBeebe.com

These graphic novels are great. They are smart, easy to read, filled with mystery and conspiracy, and they all have a great build up to the next big event (the end of the world). Overall, its an awesome take on an old tale; the events leading to the end of the world. Buy these books, and have some hope that the movie that comes after to cap everything off is good, but I have my doubts.

4 out of 5 stars Intriguing.......2006-07-19

I found it to be a bit too short. Although one could chalk that up the fact that I waited so long for it to come out, I wanted it to take longer than 20 minutes to read it.
Beyond that, loved it! Intriguing... I thought the "sketchy" nature of the drawings was good. Felt free. Alive. I like the fact that there was not a ton of exposition. It was just here are the characters, and you find stuff out as it goes along.
As in Donnie Darko, it seems like this is a very fully realized world with it's own set of physical laws and philosophies and yet never really bothers to explain too much. Great ending that makes me want the next book YESTERDAY!

4 out of 5 stars The Countdown Begins..........2006-07-11

After much delay in the release of these graphic novels, Southland Tales: Two Roads Diverge has finally hit the stands; although it may be tough right now to find a copy at your local bookstore or comic shop. And that is truly a shame because this book is good; VERY GOOD. It is the first among a series of three books to be released telling the back story of the forthcoming Richard Kelly production Southland Tales.

This first novel focuses on Boxer Santaros, a Hollywood movie star who wakes up in the middle of a desert with amnesia. As Boxer tries to put his life back together the audience is introduced to several eccentric and quite interesting characters. The most prominent being an adult film star named Krysta Now. It seems the world Boxer knew has changed drastically since he last remembered it. A pair of nuclear attacks on Texas soil have set the stage for an ultra conservative police state America. We are led to believe that Boxer holds the key to the salvation of the earth before it's immenent destruction.

If you are a fan of Richard Kelly's Donnie Darko, get this book. If you are interested in fresh ideas with well written characters and poignant art work, get this book. If you are looking for something different from everything else out there being sold on the media market, GET THIS BOOK. You won't be disappointed. The only shortcoming of Two Roads Diverge is its length. I would have liked to have seen a bit more, but the story does leave you hanging and eagerly awaiting the release of the next two novels.

5 out of 5 stars Check this Out! Will be essential for helping understand the movie. .......2006-07-09

This graphic novel is a great read and will work perfectly in setting us up for the final three chapters, which will be told in the motion picture. If you were having any doubts as to whether or not to buy this book, definitely check it out. The art is great, and familiarizing ones self with the characters in these graphic novels should prove to be a great help in better grasping certain aspects of the movie. Can't wait for the next two novels to be released!

5 out of 5 stars The Saga Begins.......2006-06-29

Southland Tales: Two Roads Diverge, went on sale today in stores. It is the first of six chapters of Southland Tales. Chapters I-III are graphic novels. Chapters IV-VI are the film Southland Tales, which is expected to be in theaters this fall.

The title "Two Roads Diverge" is taken from the Robert Frost poem "The Road Not Taken," and the poem is used as a framing device in the narration throughout. We meet Boxer Santaros, a movie action star with amnesia, Fortunio Balducci, a gambler who rescues Boxer in the Nevada desert, and Krysta Now, an adult film star and entrepreneur who promises to to get them across the militarized California state line. The story by Richard Kelly (writer/director of Donnie Darko) is inventive, profanely funny, and mysterious. The art by Brett Weldele is kinetic, frequently abstract, matching the surreal tone of the story perfectly. The art moves back and forth between the characters' perpectives and those of the sinister forces surveiling them, for an appropriately paranoia-inducing effect. This complex, fascinating, multi-part story is off to a great start.

The book includes a bonus section of photographs from the movie and the movie shoot.

Book Description

"[A]n absolutely compelling story of family and racial tragedy. Revoyr's novel is honest in detailing southern California's brutal history, and honorable in showing how families survived with love and tenacity and dignity."-Susan Straight, author of Highwire Moon

Southland brings us a fascinating story of race, love, murder and history, against the backdrop of an ever-changing Los Angeles. A young Japanese-American woman, Jackie Ishida, is in her last semester of law school when her grandfather, Frank Sakai, dies unexpectedly. While trying to fulfill a request from his will, Jackie discovers that four African-American boys were killed in the store Frank owned during the Watts Riots of 1965. Along with James Lanier, a cousin of one of the victims, Jackie tries to piece together the story of the boys' deaths. In the process, she unearths the long-held secrets of her family's history.

Southland depicts a young woman in the process of learning that her own history has bestowed upon her a deep obligation to be engaged in the larger world. And in Frank Sakai and his African-American friends, it presents characters who find significant common ground in their struggles, but who also engage each other across grounds-historical and cultural-that are still very much in dispute.

Moving in and out of the past-from the internment camps of World War II, to the barley fields of the Crenshaw District in the 1930s, to the streets of Watts in the 1960s, to the night spots and garment factories of the 1990s-Southland weaves a tale of Los Angeles in all of its faces and forms.

Nina Revoyr is the author of The Necessary Hunger ("Irresistible."-Time Magazine). She was born in Japan, raised in Tokyo and Los Angeles, and is of Japanese and Polish-American descent. She lives and works in Los -Angeles.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful read.......2006-12-27

My wife found a reference to this novel in one of her Japanese language newspapers and suggested that I buy and read it. Am I ever happy that I did! Nina Revoyr has written a wonderful, gripping novel about some very tough times in our country, and has done so with understanding, compassion and feeling. Readers who lived through the era following World War Two will recall the ugly racial tensions of the era with all its denial, and the firestorms that erupted in Watts and other places as a result. Those who didn't live through it will get a harsh dose of reality as the protagonist searches for the killer of four black young men during the Watts riots, and the unexpected outcome as she discovers who the killer was.

I like Nina Revoyr's writing, I do not at all understand those who brush it off with comments like "trite," "mediocre" and "unrealistic." Having lived through that particular period in our history, I found the book very realistic. I hope Nina Revoyr keeps writing so that I can enjoy more of what she does. I couldn't put this book down.

1 out of 5 stars You've got to be kidding me........2006-11-17

Praise you see for this book in reviews reflects the reverence people have for the subject matter and not the writing. If they were, in fact, addressing the author and her style, you'd see more words like "trite," "superficial" and "untalented." I had to check the "About the Author" section multiple times, just to make sure I wasn't being forced to read the self-published manuscript of a graduate student.

For everyone who read The Jungle and towards the end grew exasperated by unnecessary twist after unfeasible twist, this book will seem familiar. At least Sinclair had an excuse--he was writing a weekly feature in a newspaper. Revoyr, on the otherhand, has not justification for what can only be describe as mediocre writing. Okay, the main character is both a law student, a lesbian, asian, in a faltering relationship, estranged from her parents, her grandfather died, and she's investigating the 50 year old murders of 4 black teenagers. Her grandfather was the only asian in La who liked black people, and he was sent to an internment camp, and he served in WWII, and his store was torched twice by rioters, and he was an email aficionado in 1994. Are you serious? That's only to two characters--let us not forget her bisexual, biracial friend, her aunt who rejects the institution of marriage, the man who Jesus told to pick up bowling, a boy's father who killed 8 of his comrades in Korea without repercussion, and score of other entirely other implausible characters.

This book is a joke--and that is sad considering what a serious topic it is. I literally cringed with the turning of each new page, fearful of the lunacy I knew awaited me. It's like Revoyr threw in every possible cliched, and extreme character trait she could think of, and then an editor told her "why not shoot for the moon and make them all gay?"

And of course, it is all epitomized by the cover. It's a photograph of an old store front, with the title photoshopped in from WordArt. Like everything else in this book, we find big plans and little effort with a grand finale of poor results.

4 out of 5 stars In response to the "Edgar Nominee" Review........2004-04-05

It's obvious to me that the person writing this review did not read the book well. The people who died in the freezer were four Black boys, not Japanese. Because this book is about race relations, this is an important distinction.

As far as the book itself, it's enjoyable...a page turner. There are parts that are a bit overdone or that drag, but overall the book was very well-written and researched.

4 out of 5 stars An Edgar nominee.......2004-02-27

Sometimes I am amazed by the sheer volume of books the Edgar committees must consider. Surely they must feel even more overwhelmed when they are faced with the daunting task of having to consider a very long book written in a leisurely manner and difficult to get into. Forget about why they would consider SOUTHLAND. How the heck did they ever have the time, energy or motivation to read this?
Jackie Ishida who is Japanese American, is faced with the death of her grandfather, Frank Sakai. As she sorts through his will with her aunt, they note the will contains a name they never heard. As Jackie investigates who this person is, she comes upon a story of three young Japanese men being trapped in the freezer located in the shop of her grandfather. The deaths occurred during the Watts Riots in 1965. Who were they and why were they never mentioned before?
There is a problem with this book. It is well written with some truly beautifully conceived vignettes each revealing that the book is carefully constructed with much thought. However, there is a supreme lack of inertia that not only threatens but finally manages to overwhelm the complex plot with pacing being the ultimate casualty. The story just goes nowhere for what seems like forever. However, just when the frustration level reaches it's peak, the story begins to coalesce. The separate characters begin to merge through both time and space toward the common goal of getting at the truth. This is a heartbreaking tale told with great compassion. It is a book meant to be read leisurely and thoughtfully. In this hectic world in which we live, many readers might find it hard to give this book the careful reading it so very much deserves. Kudos to the Edgar Committee for taking the time and effort to read this one. Akashic Books also deserves our gratitude for taking the chance.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Read.......2003-07-16

This is the second book by Nina Revoyr but the first one that I have read by her. It is a story set in Los Angeles during 1930 to present and is the tale of a Japanese family and a murder that takes place during the Wattýs uprising in 1965. There were 4 black Negro boys found murdered in Frank Sakaiýs walk-in freezer. His grand daughter has found something in an earlier will leaving money to a man named Curtis Martindale and when she goes to find him, she finds out that he was one of the boys found in the walk-in freezer. Jackie, Frankýs granddaughter, teams up with a man by the name of James Lanier who was a cousin to Curtis to hopefully find the truth.

The story goes from Frank being a young boy in Angeles Mesa to present day when he has just passed on. He has left a box of items that Jackie has went through to see if there are any clues for the $40,000, Frank left in cash. Whether the money should go to her aunt to help in the buying of a house or it should go to Curtis Martindale who is in the first will that was written. If it should go to Curtis Martindale, why should it have gone to him? Was there something that Frank did not share with the rest of the family?

It took me a while to get used to the book jumping from one time frame to another and also from one person to another person. But I am glad that I stuck with it, because it is a very well done book. There is also a lesbian relationship that Jackie is trying to work out for herself in this book that adds to the adventure in this historical fiction book. Overall, I thought the book well done and I am very happy to have read it.

A century after the close of the Civil War, Yankees stage another foray into Dixie, this time the objective is control of a venerable beloved insurance company-The Southland. In terms reminiscent of Sherman's assault on Atlanta, Baltimore stockbrokers attempt to gain control of an institution as emblematic of southern culture and manners as Tara in Gone With the Wind. Fought this time with proxies and ballots instead of musket balls, this conflict puts to the test the hearts and minds of a generation who thought they had outgrown the biases and prejudices of the survivors of the War Between the States.

        4 out of 5 stars Faith Triumphant.......2005-01-27

The history of Australia begins with England sending ships full of convicts to work in the country. These convicts, some innocent of their crimes, while others had made mistakes, must first endure a vicious trip across dangerous seas. This book contains the evolving romances of 4 couples, all intertwined throughout the four stories. Each story's basis is a deep Christian faith. In the first story, John Martin was wrongly convicted of murder and sentenced to life toiling in Australia. During the voyage, he quells a riot, but is severly punished by a jealous ships officer. He is nursed back to health by Elizabeth. Once arriving in Australia they strive to prove John's innocence while he struggles to trust in God's plan.

The second story revolves around Adam and Kate...Adam was also once a convict but now free and is working to create a life for himself in the Australian outback. He takes John Martin as his assigned worker and soon learns to believe in God and agrees to try and prove John's innocence in England. Adam meets Kate in England and together they face danger from John's true enemy. While they struggle to return to Australia with John's proof, they fall in love.

Beth and William also travel to Australia with Kate and Adam. William has loved Beth since they were children, married her in an arranged marriage filled with lies and secrets and as a Reverend struggles to find peace with God when he feels Beth has betrayed him. His struggles to remain loyal to his vows and his love of God are painful but result in glorious true love.

The fourth story revolves around Tim and Patricia. They struggle to find common ground, all the while struggling to survive in the harsh Australian Outback. This is probably the weakest of the four stories and I think could have been left out of the book.

I found some of the stories a bit slow, but did get involved in the characters and wanted to see the conclusions of their stories. I do wish it had moved a long just a bit faster. But I felt you did get to truly experience the harsh conditions all who lived in Australia dealt with in the early years of the country's existence. Particularly interesting was when the author revealed which characters in the stories were actually members of her own family. I also liked how strongly having faith in God was woven into all the story lines. Having a personal relationship with God does not make your life go smoothly but it does give you a solid anchor to weather the storms that all of us experience. I think that was the strong point of the book and therefore worth four stars. Having faith in God will get all of us through life's difficulties.

5 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyed this book.......2004-08-16

At first glance, I wondered if this book could keep my attention enough for as long as it is. But I thoroughly enjoyed it until the very end, and it even left me wanting more. I am going to get her other book, Australia. This book is really four books or stories, with characters that are related throughout and each book focusing on a different set. The delicious romantic storylines include an unfairly convicted convict, a convict (convicted for something harmless) who is a devout christian and brings others to Christ, and other characters who are equally as deep and interesting. Each storyline drew me in to the last page and was rich and inspiring. Enjoy!
