Book Description
National Bestseller
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Running with Scissors comes Augusten Burroughs's most provocative collection of true stories yet. From nicotine gum addiction to lesbian personal ads to incontinent dogs, Possible Side Effects mines Burroughs's life in a series of uproariously funny essays. These are stories that are uniquely Augusten, with all the over-the-top hilarity of Running with Scissors, the erudition of Dry, and the breadth of Magical Thinking. A collection that is universal in its appeal and unabashedly intimate, Possible Side Effects continues to explore that which is most personal, mirthful, disturbing, and cherished, with unmatched audacity. A cautionary tale in essay form. Be forewarned--hilarious, troubling, and shocking results might occur.

Laugh out Loud Funny! Thank you!.......2007-10-05
I just loved this book and finished it quickly. I went to the store to buy Clarence Thomas' new memoir and saw this had come out. If this was in hardcover, I missed it, but I grabbed it the second I saw it!
Augusten Burroughs is one of the funniest writers and most enjoyable to read. I've read all his books and would recommend them all thoroughly. There are many things to praise about Burroughs. Among them is his self-deprecating humor. He wants to be a good person (he is actually a good person) and fights the negative thoughts he has almost constantly. He's a bit insecure. I think he used to be a bit unlikeable, but he's grown up a lot in this book.
When I read Laurie Notaro's first book, I loved it. When she grew up, however, and wrote her second book, she just wasn't funny anymore. That's not the case here. Burroughs has actually gotten better with age. He faces his fears, he is more honest than he used to be, he struggles with issues like the rest of us, but does all he can to be the best person he can be. And, he writes about it with spot-on insight and humor.
All of the book is excellent, but the vignette called Moving Violations was completely hysterical and a definite must-read to anyone who appreciates Burroughs' writing and the weirdness of life.
Possible Side Effects.......2007-09-23
I found this book to be yet another brilliant addition to my Augusten Burroghs collection. From the day I bought it I found it hard to put it down. I found myself laughing out loud and often. I really appreciate Augustens easy going writing style. I look forward to many more.
Hard to stop reading!.......2007-09-23
This was a hard book to put down from the second I read it! The interesting life and observations of Augusten Burroughs is a hilarious read! From his horrific experience with the tooth fairy to his telekinesis powers I couldn't stop reading and laughing!
I would recommend this book to anyone who needs a good laugh or just wants a good read!
not his best, but still good........2007-08-12
i really enjoyed Running With Scissors and i absolutely loved Dry. this book was kind of like a flight of ideas, no real surprises, no cohesive story but still amusing. i'll read anything by Augusten Burroughs because i'm hooked on his life. he's an amazing human being and a true survivor.
Psycho like a Fox.......2007-08-11
It takes a certain kind of person to find the humor in tragedy. I'm one of those people. My husband simply cannot understand it when he finds me giggling maniacally as I watch a southern-Gothic Betty Butterfield tell the emergency-room doctor that the pills he's prescribed for her Fox News-induced panic attack are not what she had in mind. "I want somethin' with a 'X' in it," she wails. "I want somethin' with a 'V' in it!" Type her name into Google or You Tube and you'll see what I mean.
If you don't think Betty Butterfield or Augusten Burroughs are funny, then you either led a boringly normal childhood or you're completely psychotic.
When my mother saw that I was reading Possible Side Effects, she remarked, "I don't think that man is funny at all." I doubt Augusten's mother would've seen the humor either.
See, me and Augusten? We're so much alike it's kinda scary. And it's not just because we both have Southern backgrounds rife with mental illness of the Auntie Mame variety. Or because we're insecure, hypochondriacal slobs with a tendency to write down our lives. It's because I get it. Oh, I sooo get it. Burroughs has this kind of Seinfeld-episode quality to his stories that I can relate to.
When he writes a chapter about buying up as many first-edition John Updike novels as possible because the guy's old and could die any minute, and just THINK how the value on those books will skyrocket when he does, finally, bite the dust... Well, let's just say I understood, and brushed the dust off my two Easton Press signed Kurt Vonneguts.
And when Burroughs recounts the story about taking a weekend getaway with his partner at a private B&B only to get completely creeped out by the owner's doll collection, I knew just how he felt.
Later, behind the closed door of their room, they fantasize about sneaking through the house at night, removing all the dolls' heads, or writing things in the guestbook for the next guests to find. "She watched us," or "There's something about one of the dolls." Har!
But Burroughs has something Seinfeld doesn't have. There are stories here that break your heart. These are stories about damaged people, some who bloom in the face of tragedy and some who succumb to it, and what is to be learned there.
While Burroughs has a knack for skewering people in his life, he also shines the spotlight on himself, revealing his less-than-pretty habits and his less-than-noble intentions. It's this unpitying self-revelation that makes me like him because I recognize so much of myself in his essays.
He's damaged goods, that's certain. But it's the kind of damage that reveals the strength beneath it, even in humor, the wisdom gained through pain - his own and others'. And it makes me think that maybe I've got some of that strength, too. It makes me want to have him over for tea and compare mental illnesses. I've got some funny stories in my family, too, that I just know he'd like.

Book Description
Approximately one million Americans per year take high doses of prednisone and related drugs (glucocorticoids) to treat serious illnesses and conditions ranging from asthma to rheumatoid arthritis to kidney disease to organ transplantation. Wile these medicines may have unpleasant, even devastating side effects, including gastrointestinal problems, intense mood swings, changes in hair and skin, and increased susceptibility to infection, they may also be the only treatment available for serious or life-threatening illnesses. When the world-renowned flutist Eugenia Zuckerman was prescribed prednisone to combat a rare lung disease, she teamed up with her sister, Julie R. Ingelfinger, a well-known specialist in pediatric nephrology and hypertension at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, to write the first ever, comprehensive guide for patients undergoing this difficult treatment.Packed with everything your doctor didn't have time to tell you, including recipes, exercises, and tips based on personal experience, Coping with Prednisone is an invaluable handbook for health-care workers, caregivers, and especially for patients themselves.

prednisone.......2007-07-16
Not too impressed, the title looks as if this gives a general explanation of the drug, but it mostly refers to lung conditions. In my case it is P.M.R. and the book gives no indication of this.
Review of Coping with Prednisone.......2007-06-13
I wish I had been able to read this book before I began a course of treatment with prednisone. I may have been able to avoid some of the side effects, or at least not have suffered the discomfort to the extent that I did. The author gives helpful advice. She was very disciplined in her approach to treatment. We may not all be able to stick to a program such as hers, but at least we would have the option. It was very helpful.
Reality is, this medication is a necessary evil.......2007-03-17
This book is a good primer for those who don't know what to expect when they are going to start prednisone. Prednisone is a tough drug to take over the long term, but it is very necessary and life saving to those of us on a long term regiment. This book is a good primer on what to start to expect when you start taking it, but the reality is your side effects while similar to most of us taking it, will be a little different to each person.
Will you gain weight and feel like a sponge around liquids? Thats pretty much a guarantee, but its how you deal with it mentally that will help you the most, because the alternative for most of us if we don't take it is not pleasant.
Prednisone is a wonder drug in that it can help a vast amount of diseases; for me its ITP and Sarcoidosis, which is great because of its availability and low cost of usage unlike other most costly drugs. But as others have said, its side effects can be harsh the higher your dosage. The key thing about this drug and i cannot stress it enough, is to take your dosage AT THE SAME TIME every time you are supposed to take it. This drug is hard enough to deal with, but missing a dosage by even a few hours will mess with you hard!
This being said, should you question taking the drug in the first place? Naturally yes, but if the doctor says you need to, don't mess around, take it because it will help. Tell your family and your close friends you are on this drug, because it will change you and the more they understand, the better off all will be, because some pretty nasty things can be said when you are mad and taking this drug.
Remember everyone's side effects will be a little different than those described in the book. Just know that you are not alone, because if there is one person who remotely says they like taking this drug, they've either lost there mind or never took it more than a few weeks in the first place.
One good side effect, is that when you goto a buffet you are pretty much guaranteed to get your money's worth!
The "Bible" for those on Prednisone.......2007-01-04
WHen my husband was put on a high dose of Prednisone and began having severe reactions to it, I looked for help to really understand what was happening--a friend mentioned this book so I got it and immediately felt like I had a real support system in place!! When my husband felt well enough to read anything, he also read it, underlining key passages, saying that it addressed his concerns and what he was experiencing--he is better now and weaned off of the Prednisone--hopefully won't need any more as the side effects are extraordinary! but thanks, Eugenia et al., for writing this guide!!!
This book was a life saver!.......2006-12-31
I was so fortunate to learn about and read this book very early in my treatment using Prednisone.
It helped me create a healthier diet and exercise program for myself (to avoid the average 50 pound plus weight gain associated with taking this drug for longer than 6 months)and most importantly, it helped me recognize symptoms of the drugs side-effects.
With the knowledge obtained from reading this book and talking with my physicians, I knew to ask my physicians about regular liver, kidney and eye examinations. I knew that the possible physical changes (pie face, thickening of the middle trunk area, hump at the base of the neck) were documented and that my body would return to normal eventually (nearly two years after stopping the medication in my case).
I have and continue to strongly recommend the reading of this book to anyone that is facing, has started, or is currently receiving this drug as treatment.
As the subtitle reads, "it may work miracles," and it has in my case, but the side-effects can be health threatening/altering if you and your physician are not aware of them and do not take measures to avoid them or treat them as soon as they appear.

Big Help.......2007-05-12
This book is so helpful. I recommend this book to everybody. It's very informative when it comes to medication.
The Very Best.......2007-05-08
Totally unbiased -- it's a reference we can trust and recommend to our friends!
A Book for All Shelves.......2007-01-19
It's impossible to count the number of times I have consulted this fine reference for myself, family and friends.
Buy it - it has the potential to save you grief, hospital visits, or even your life. Doctors simply make too many prescription errors today, especially for people who take multiple drugs. The only downside is that some brand new medications on the market aren't included; but then, the book advises that you not use a drug until it's been out for 7 years as problems are usually apparent during that amount of time. By that time, there's probably a new edition of Worst Pills, Best Pills published or close to being released.
Alternate point of view.......2005-11-16
While this book come across as a bit alarmist, it is a welcome alternative to other books on drugs, which are compilations of information provided by drug companies. The most useful feature of this book is the alternative treatments for each drug. These alternative treatments are much lower risk than the drugs they potentially replace.
Worst Pills, Best Pills:A Consumer's Guide to Avoiding Drug-Induced Death or Illness.......2005-07-06
A very useful guide to avoiding adverse drug interaction, especially for one who is taking multiple medications. Even my doctor did not warn of the danger of taking Ultracet and Celebrex together.

Good but not current enough for me........2007-07-13
I am taking a medication that isn't BRAND new to the market but isn't by any means OLD either. It has been released within the last 4 years. I was hoping it would be in this book as I am also taking herbal supplements, but it wasn't. There were other drugs that were supposed to be for the same conditions, but since they are different chemicals the interactions were potentially different, so I didn't find this helpful.
That said, there are plenty of maintstream medications like antibiotics, etc. included in this book so it might be helpful to some folks. I just think that drugs, like computers, change so quickly that books like this can't cover everything. I am on the fence with my recommendation on this one.
Good book !!!.......2007-05-12
Very comprehensive book which helps you to have a thorough picture on medication matters. I suggest it to anybody who wants to have an updated medical library.
Be safe with supplements.......2007-02-21
I purchased this book as I have fibromyalgia and wanted to try some alternative therapies, and ensure their safety with my prescription medications. I feel that it is an excellent guide for that, and actually is quite useful as a simplified prescription medication guide. It is easy to use, easy to understand, and does a great job of listing and describing medication/herbal/vitamin/supplement interactions. I purchased one for my parents, and my sister purchased one as well. Very useful book if you take any medications and any other type of supplement.
Includes just about every medication available, with the exception of those released after its publication.
Doesn't list everything.......2007-02-13
Book is 2006, yet doesn't list some of the RX's I take. Hard to use, also. Some RX's are only listed generically, so you need a computer to check the brand name first.
Straightforward and Comprehensive.......2004-10-20
The book is large but set out in a series of straightforward sections: the first one on drugs themselves (under generic names - useful if you're British !) with each entry having a general paragraph on the drug (or group of drugs) but then goes onto talk of how it/they interact with herbs and vitamins whether helpful and unhelpful interactions.
There is then a large section on the vitamin, mineral or herbal supplements simply showing which drugs they interact with. The final two sections appear to be for medical professionals only as one is listing the drugs by pharmacist classification and one is a 'book/article source listing' giving the medical sources about each of the drugs.
I'd never realised it wasn't a good idea to take a codeine pain killer compound with tea before - the tannins inhibit the uptake of the drug ! Very interesting.

A must read on drug effectiveness and commercialization.......2000-08-15
This is an excellent account of the effects of allowing marketing of Tamnbocor (flecainide) as an anti-arrhythmic based on "surrogate" intermediate endpoints. Later there was recognition that in fact the drug was associated with increased cardiac death rates when a "gold standard" randomized controlled trial was undertaken. It also shows the problematic relationships between the payment and support of academic researchers into drug effectiveness and the drug firms, many of whose products have been life saving and life transforming. A very well balanced book and very enjoyable reading. The author erroneously describes RA Fisher as an American Genius which would irritate the very English (& later Australian) Cambridge professor of Genetics!
Unbelievable but TRUE story how prescription drugs kill!.......1999-07-06
This important investigative work explains HOW and WHY the American Pharmaceutical Industry KILLS and no one seems seriously interested in stopping it, least of all the FDA! Legally prescribed drugs are now the 4th LEADING cause of death in the US. We are trying to change this by helping to train physicians and the public to use natural approaches instead of drugs, inspite of the continous FDA and FTC harrassment of all doctors in Alternative Medicine. Our system that financially rewards doctors millions of dollars for KILLING people is seriously out of control. If natural therapies are even alleged to have slightly harmed even 1 patient, the FDA stands ready to seize ALL of the supplies and put everyone involved in jail. Yet drugs are provably killing over 100,000 each year and the GAME goes on. I believe this book could help everyone understand that this must all change and soon. This book merely describes the tip of the iceberg and the 70,000 dead from these heart medicines described in detail here, is just a fraction of the real number needlessly killed by American medicine and surgery everyday at great taxpayor expense. WE have safe and EFFECTIVE alternatives to virtually every drug, including aspirin (not tylenol!) and most heart surgery is done on the WRONG plaque and does not significantly reduce the likelihood of a heart attack. There are SAFE natural alternatives not just for heart disease but for virtually every one of the major diseases today! contact G.F. Gordon M.D.D.O. Important piece of the jigsaw showing unscientific medicine.......1997-12-22
Ralph Moss wrote an excellent review of this book in the Spring 1997 edition of the Cancer Chronicles. I am writing only to put his review into context. There have been many books written describing the shortcomings of medicine, particularly those questioning claims of the efficacy of medical intervention. These include Robert Mendelsohn's Confessions of A Medical Heretic; Richard Taylor's Medicine out of Control; Ivan Illich's Medical Nemesis; the New Medical Foundation's Dissent in Medicine; Samuel Epstein's The Politics of Cancer; Ralph Moss' Cancer Industry and Questioning Chemotherapy; Ulrich Abel's Chemotherapy of advanced epithelial cancer - a critical survey; What Doctors Don't Tell You's Cancer Handbook, What's Really Working; and Neville Hodgkinson's AIDS, the failure of scientific medicine. (I have also published two papers questioning the efficacy of surgical treatment of cancer in Medical Hypotheses.) These together support and explain the claim in the editorial in the British Medical Journal of October 1991 (Vol 303: 198-99) "Where is the wisdom...? The poverty of medical evidence" that "Only about 15% of medical interventions are supported by solid evidence... This is partly because only 1% of the articles in medical journals are scientifically sound". Thomas Moore's earlier (1989) book Heart Failure describes the poor record of treating heart problems with bypass surgery, balloon angioplasty and drugs to lower serum cholesterol. Moore's more recent book homes in on particular drugs such as those used to treat arrhythmia. With deaths from heart disease accounting for more than 40% of all deaths these two books on the inefficacy of treatments for heart problems fill an important gap. As a scientist I found the section explaining how "surrogate endpoints" are used instead of actual therapeutic benefits to test efficacy particularly useful. It explains why so many claims for the efficacy of chemotherapy are invalid. It is a pity that the book is now out of print.

Good Reference.......2007-02-15
I use this book as a reference in my Naturopathic Consulting Practice. It affords me the knowledge to keep people safe in the use of Herbs. Thanks!
A must have book.......2006-11-03
If you use herbs and take perscription medications...you can check these interactions here. Dr. Brinker lists the plants and when NOT to use them with drugs. Licorice is one plant that has many contraindications. Better to be safe than sorry.
This is the latest research on the contraindications between herbs and drugs. A smart purchase.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book!.......2007-05-13
This a wonderful book for anyone who wants a healthier lifestyle and for anyone who wants to lose weight permanently! It is an easy read and everything is explained in simple terms.
Healthy for Life.......2007-02-16
This is a well researched approach to losing weight in a more permanent fashion. It gives hope to all those people who have been dieting forever and not getting lasting results. Excellent read.
Books are virtually the same.......2007-02-15
I read a borrowed copy of Releasing Fat: Developing Healthy lifestyles that Have the Side-Effect of Permanent Weight Loss. It wasn't until after I ordered a copy for myself AND and copy of Healthy for Life... that I read the blurbs about them on Dr. Strand's website. You can't tell on the Amazon site that the books are virtually identical. The only difference is that Releasing Fat includes Usana products (meal replacements, snack bars, and vitamins and minerals) in its meal plans. Healthy for Life just has low-glycemic foods in its meal plans. If you want only one copy, you just need to get one or the other, not both. HOWEVER, I wasn't bothered by having two copies of what amounted to the same book because I've learned so much about insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, killer (abdominal) fat, carb cravings, cellular nutrition, and the benefits of a low-glycemic diet that I wanted to recommend it to all my friends and relatives.
There are a lot of low-gycemic diet books out there now, but this is the only one I've seen that goes into such detail about the specific negative health effects that result from the way most Americans eat and how a change to a low-glycemic diet will counteract those health problems.
Healthy For Life: by Ray Strand.......2006-08-29
I have enjoyed the writing of Ray Strand in the past, and his being the author of this book was partly instrumental in my decision to purchase it. The title seems to imply that the subject matter would cover a variety of concerns and indeed, the first quarter of the book deals with the generalities in lifestyles and health. However, the main thrust of this book appears to be the effect of high glycemic foods on the present, almost epidemic occurence of diabetes in the general population, from children and adolescents to adults. If this is your area of interest, this book is quite thorough and covers a lot of territory regarding the effects of glycemic overload and what can be done about it. I find the author's inclusion of several weeks of sample, remedial menus to be very helpful. This book would be beneficial to everyone given the present state of America's health trends and Dr. Strnd writes clearly and in depth about the subject.
Healthy for LIfe: Developing Healthy Lifestyles that Have the Side-Effect of Permanent Weight Loss.......2006-08-07
Excellent book for all those interested in wellness and/or weight loss. Dr. Strand presents the technical reasons for weight loss in very interesting and understandable language. I strongly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in health, wellness, and/or weight loss.
