Book Description

The book spares no one. Politicians, sports stars, celebrities, corporations, publishers, crossing guards––all fair game. If you are a scumbag or just somebody who they find annoying there is a fair chance you will be on the list.

Politics has long been a passion for Jackie Mason and he is well known for his tough and outspoken position on many issues. He is not one to sidestep an issue no matter how sticky. Together with his friend and collaborator, the well–known divorce attorney Raoul Lionel Felder, he has hosted a weekly PBS talk television series "Crossing The Line" and a BBC radio show "The Mason–Felder Report", and currently he has a weekly talk show on the Comcast Network.

1 out of 5 stars Cheap Awful Jokes and simply stupid.......2007-10-07

I guess I thought it would give me a laugh or two based on some of highlighted phases, "Jews for Jesus" etc. However, it was yet another comedian trying to join the Lewis Black, Daily Show or Bill Maher bandwagon of political humor. Too bad this comedian is not as funny nor has diverse content.
After the first few pages the book simply turns into a complaining/vent session of everything which the authors deeply disagrees with - let me summarize:
Any Jew who is against Israel
Any political organization against Israel politics
Any person who remotely supports the Holocaust
Any non-Conservative
and silly jokes to those in media which require teasing (ie. Al Sharpton, Michael Moore, Jesse Jackson, Britney, etc.)

There are many other comedian with similar content and jokes but they are really funny whereas this book just takes a small segment of its victim and highlights it as their basis for existence.

Save yourself money and time. If you want something funny watch a truly funny comedian. Allow Jackie to perform on Broadway and advise him to keep the stand-up act going but stay away from the typewriter.

1 out of 5 stars Useful in only one regard.......2007-09-26

Perhaps I'm just getting too old... I can vaguely remember back in the early days of television when some of what Jackie Mason said was actually funny.

But the only way this book could been any worse would have been if Alan Derschowitz had done the editing and Ann Coulter's face had been on the cover. (Although, to be fair, Neither Mr. Mason nor Mr. Felder is very much less unappealing to behold than Ms. Coulter)

Still, this book did add something to my store of knowledge. Based upon the definitions given in the introduction, I can now state with some authority that:

1. Anyone who either buys a book written by a faded borscht belt comedian and a celebrity divorce lawyer for more than 39 cents on a remainders table OR takes seriously anything contained in said book - is a schmuck.

2. Anyone who actually writes such a book as this one AND puts his own name on it - is a putz.

2 out of 5 stars okay read.......2007-08-24

It is an okay read, but I won't recommand buying it. Borrow it from the library or something.

2 out of 5 stars The incessant whine of the privileged has never been so shrill.......2007-07-12

Imagine if you will that you are at a dinner. Your host is a rather amusing Republican; and he may have been a liberal in his youth, but that only makes his current political stance all that more forceful. He begins with a few light jokes, some witty repartee and then drags you into a longwinded and ultimately self-righteous sermon about everything that is wrong with America. Now imagine that he's Jewish or at least knows enough Yiddish to fake it. That's the essence of this book.

As with Goldberg's 39 People Screwing Up America, this is one of those books from the Republican Shriek Factory. Forget about Bush committing us to a fruitless war and practically legitimizing torture. Forget about the blank check that Bush got from a Republican Congress to keep this war going. Hell forget about Ann Coulter, Bill O'Reilly, FEMA or Ken Lay from Enron. No, in this world, the worst human being is Al Gore (who is lying - so sayeth the ancient Jewish comedians without humor) and Al Sharpton. Oh and of course we can't have a book like this without slamming on Barbara Streisand.

Even Goldberg threw in a few personalities that we could all agree on - like Barbara Walters dumbing down the news.

But this book is just a combination of smug and defensive from beginning to end. And even better, it's new but it reads like an old NY Post article. These guys still think that Bill Clinton's sex scandal is more odious than Bush's war. Only no one died in that sex scandal and at this point I thought no one cared. ANd Bill Maher? Yep, he said that the 9/11 terrorists weren't cowardly. The factg that bravery and cowardice have really nothing to do with their actions is second nature. Nope, you have to call your enemies cowardly. The words "evil" or "vicious" are only accurate; so why bother with them?

This is a book that was old before its time. Had it been published in the early part of the decade when Bush could do no wrong and his willing cheerleaders sang his praises, it might have been a hit; especially among those who think that throwing in a Yiddish word or two is the height of comedy (ie. goyim). Now it's just sad.

3 out of 5 stars Milding Amusing At Best.......2007-06-09

Lighthearted approach to some heavyweight topics. It's a very quick read about dozens of people, places, organizations, countries, governments that don't measure up to he way Mason and Felder's look at the world and the way it oughta' be. Mason does comedy standup about world events, so maybe he's qualified in his contributions to the written slam fest. -But who's this Raoul Felder? -A "celebrity divorce lawyer," reads the book jacket. One might ask: "What's his world-view expertise?"

In any event, the book's stacked with truly cutting opinions and soft-touch humor about personalities from Barbra Streisand, Barry Bonds, Bill Clinton, Ray Nagin, and even Pablo Picasso...to entities like the NCAA, Afghanistan, the French, and the New York Times. Plus criticisms about automatic toilets and sinks? True, this topic has not been overlooked. The casual funniness balances the biting lampooning in ways that only Mason can effect...without venom or hate. You can sort of tell which parts were Mason's and which were Felders.

Regularly, they parlay a compelling "Jewish" flavor to the work by including references to Jewish events or people or words. The authors often pepper in terms like feh, meshpucha, yenta, et. al. I don't exactly know the meaning of these words; but somehow, they worked for this reader. Ah, but, then, too, the title of the book is "Schmucks!" What should we expect? Is it light Jewish humor packaged for Gentiles. [The copyright for this book is by Krapatakin? Might there be some kind of hidden humor here only the writers would know about... (!?)]

Mason and Felder confront the notion that "...just because a person is absolutely first-class in one field does not mean [he/] she should be respected in another," the point of a couple of pages on Susan Sarandon. Maybe this says it all, as "Schmucks!" is all over the board, definitely overly-political [however lite] in its scope, and is only marginally amusing. It's Not at all "material that will leave you crying with laughter," as the dust cover promises; but it is interesting, with a lot of "yeah, I agree with that" reader reaction.

Book Description

Timothy Carrier, having a beer after work at his friend’s tavern, enjoys drawing eccentric customers into amusing conversations. But the jittery man who sits next to him tonight has mistaken Tim for someone very different—and passes to him a manila envelope full of cash.

“Ten thousand now. You get the rest when she’s gone.”

The stranger walks out, leaving a photo of the pretty woman marked for death, and her address. But things are about to get worse. In minutes another stranger sits next to Tim. This one is a cold-blooded killer who believes Tim is the man who has hired him.

Thinking fast, Tim says, “I’ve had a change of heart. You get ten thousand—for doing nothing. Call it a no-kill fee.” He keeps the photo and gives the money to the hired killer. And when Tim secretly follows the man out of the tavern, he gets a further shock: the hired killer is a cop.

Suddenly, Tim Carrier, an ordinary guy, is at the center of a mystery of extraordinary proportions, the one man who can save an innocent life and stop a killer far more powerful than any cop…and as relentless as evil incarnate. But first Tim must discover within himself the capacity for selflessness, endurance, and courage that can turn even an ordinary man into a hero, inner resources that will transform his idea of who he is and what it takes to be The Good Guy.

5 out of 5 stars The GOOD GUY.......2007-10-08

Every time I read Dean Koontz, It is like, I think that 'this book here is his best'. But, I know that it just is not possible. Every book I have read of his, I just totally love. This novel is so believable. Well, he has a nak of making people believe that it is. He uses real every day people in his stories. And, it makes you think, 'what if?!' I mean, his characters are like so real. A masonry man is sitting in a bar. A guy comes in. Makes idle conversation. Then, hands him $10,000.00 cash in an envelope. With a picture of a woman. He says, something like, 'You will get the rest when she is gone.' Whoa! Can you just imagine if something like that really happened. I will not tell any more. I do not want to give anything away. I love the way he begins his novels. And this one is great. I am sure you will like it as much as I did!

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Koontz; I love Koontz.......2007-10-08

I love Koontz, and have read everything that he has written (that has been available since the 70's). There are other earlier books, but they're not available. My favorite will always be "Shadowfires", an early book written under a pseudonym. His last book, "The Husband" was an excellent suspense book with a disappointing ending. "The Good Guy" is almost as good, loads of suspense, and another crazy bad guy (not as good as the bad guy in "The Face"; he was the best), but almost as delusional. I liked all the characters; Tim Carrier indeed had reasons for being a Good Guy, and the resolve was somewhat satisfying. I'm especially glad that Mr. Koontz isn't dragging his books out, ad nauseum, like "Corner of His Eye" or those others, because they could've been 200 pages shorter. "The Good Guy" was enjoyable. Koontz doesn't need supernatural stuff or government conspiricies to be interesting. When he has good and interesting characters, as he does here, he can hold interest. Indeed, I was held from the first page. I never understood "Cold Fire". Could someone explain to me why it's so great? I think it's his only bad book; well, "Dragon Fire" is a close second...

1 out of 5 stars From a fan of Koontz, this is not 'Good' at all.......2007-10-06

Almost every Koontz book that you pick up will have a few saving graces. Primarily for myself, I enjoy the first half of just about every one of his books. I have been thinking for a while that it would be nice to take his stories, rip out the last half of all of them, and end up with a collection of entertaining 'Twilight Zone' style stories. The reason I say this is because Koontz really knows how to start a story in a manner that grabs the reader and brings them into a world that is startlingly fresh and interesting concept wise. However he always, and I mean always wraps his stories up in exactly the same fashion. His bad guy is foiled by the good guy who gets the girl that he probably has found during whatever book it is you picked up.

With that aside, the reason 'The Good Guy' rates a whole lot lower on my Koontz scale than most of his stories is that this time he pretty much races into what is normally the middle of most of his novels. The plot races towards Koontz usual cat and mouse play within the first twenty or so pages and you miss out on the enjoyable build up. So what you are left with is a long drawn out chase scene and a mushy ending.

I suppose that most of you will not agree with me. Alas, I wish that this were a better book. The writing is at times perhaps the very most contrived that I have ever come across in Koontz's books. for example...

"Is there something I should know? Have you been in trouble sometime?"

She blinked "Not me. Im as straight as a new nail that never met a hammer."

"Why does that sound to me like there was a hammer, maybe a lot of hammers, but you didn't bend?"

"I dont know. I dont know why it sounds that way to you. Maybe you're always inferring hidden meaning when none is implied."

"Im just a bricklayer."

Ah... at times it is painfully bad. I wish Koontz would write a true 'horror' book and not have the quality of his writing end up creating most of the terror.

3 out of 5 stars Very good suspense Novel.......2007-10-02

Koontz has been on a roll lately with suspense novels. They have all been good and not involved anything supernatural. This book does not change that pattern.

The story is basically a traditional good against evil type of story. As with all Koontz novels, this book takes off fairly quickly and does not let up until the end. The story is fairly strong through out and the characters are very likable. The villain, though not as good as some of his villains of the past, is interesting and keeps your attention.

If you are a fan of Dean Koontz and or suspense novels in general I would most definitely recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book (so-so ending).......2007-09-25

Quick review. Great book .. had me up several nights. If you like unpretentious thrillers, go for it.

However, the ending was lousy. Without giving anything away, the final explanation of the "why's" is just so completely unbelievable (not to worry, it is still a good read ... but Koontz could have spent some more time on a more plausible ending).

The Husband is as good and just more solid.

Book Description

No More Christian Nice Guy showed you the eye-opening truth about Christian men becoming more and more passive, rarely recognizing how often they let themselves get walked on, and how being a doormat hurts their marriage and chances of getting married. Note: When you submit to what other people think you should be, you are seen as a Nice Guy. But Jesus wasn't a Nice Guy. He told it like it was. Jesus was a Good Guy. He was a real man. Always being agreeable only opens the door to opportunities to be lied to and manipulated by others. It's true; nice guys aren't always nice. This Study Guide dives deeper into the Nice Guy problem, helping you discover the true biblical model of manhood. Each chapter contains several exercises to help you move from passivity to assertiveness, plus a bevy of bonus information, including additional help for single Christian Nice Guys, which provides insights into the Christian Nice Guy problem not found in No More Christian Nice Guy. So join the Good Guy Rebellion and start living your life as a Christian Good Guy. Suggestions for small-group leaders make this suitable for use in groups or on your own.

5 out of 5 stars Book Review.......2007-09-30

Excellent book on how a Christian man should behave in relationships with other people in the church and with the world.

5 out of 5 stars No More Christian Nice Guy.......2007-08-01

This book is must for every man and I would dare stretch it to teenage boys as well. The author is very inciteful and struck a chord with me in each topic. The book is well written, humorous, touching and above all, very practical. I am getting tired of the weak, feminized portrayal of Christ and I am glad this book is out there to help counteract that false image.

5 out of 5 stars Must Read for Christians.......2007-06-27

"No More Christian Nice Guy" is a book that every Christian should read. Paul Coughlin skillfully explains how Christians often mistake being "nice" with being good, and how this mistake particularly harms Christian men and their impact on society.

"No More Christian Nice Guy" helped me identify a problem which had bothered me for a long time but which I couldn't articulate. Coughlin expertly notes how the problem of associating "niceness" with goodness turns men off to Christianity, turns Christian men off to church and further growth in knowing God, and all but forces Christian men to repress their natural, masculine attributes in favor of becoming worthless objects of lifeless passivity.

Some of the resultant injuries of "niceness" that Coughlin addresses are as follows.

The Christian promotion of "niceness" has led to the Church sinfully feminizing Jesus (Chapter 2: Jesus the Bearded Woman). Chapter 5 (How Being "Nice" Ruins Love and Marriage) shows how "nice" men are not good for men OR for women. Chapter 7 (Confused to Vilified: Our Culture's View of Masculinity) details how secular society is just as guilty as the Church (actually, even more so) in demanding that men be "nice" through its vilification of everything masculine. Chapter 6 (We're Men, Not Eunuchs) comments on how the emphasis for Christian men to be "nice" has led to Christians denigrating a man's natural sexual desires. (Chapter 6 also notes how many Christians would oppose parts of the Bible, such as the "Song of Songs", were they written today!). Chapter 8 (Nice Guy, Naïve Guy: How Being Nice Hurts Men at Work) explores how Christian encouragement for men to be "nice" turns them into doormats for others to use (as opposed to men who will stand up for themselves). And Chapters 9 and 10 (Masculinity: The Journey From Nice Guy to Good Guy, Parts 1 and 2 respectively) examine how Christian emphasis for men to be "nice" (instead of "mean" or assertive) stands in the way of Christian men being GOOD and Godly.

There are points in the book where Coughlin probably writes a bit too much about his own life (to the point where it nearly turns autobiographical at times) and this detracted somewhat from the main theme. Nevertheless, I still immensely enjoyed "No More Christian Nice Guy" and I highly recommend it to Christians everywhere--men and women alike.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing book.......2007-03-24

As a mother of 3 boys I was interested to read this book based on hearing about the group Godmen. Some of the reviews say the book is hard-hitting and 'in your face'. I didn't feel that way at all. I saw it more as a plea. I even cried a few times while reading it. I'm not into self-help books AT ALL and this one, along with Being A Christian Without Being An Idiot, are the first two I've bought in probably 10 years. I read them both cover to cover and feel I've gained important insight into raising my sons to be godly men.

I've been frustrated for years by the so-called male leadership in the church. They do an okay job but seem hampered in some way. Then I hear men talk about the 'feminization of the church'. That offends me because it sounds like a cop out. If woman are leading it's because men refuse to, and it smacks of the whole 'the woman made me do it' line by Adam in the garden. LOL

The book helped me understand how this came about and makes me more empathetic to men. :) I'm thrilled to see men becoming more masculine and rising up to live out their God-given roles and pray this book makes it into the hands of the suffering men out their who lead their lives in quiet desperation.

5 out of 5 stars Wake-up Call for Nice Guys!.......2007-01-24

Paul Coughlin has penned an excellent book based on personal experience. If you grew up in church as a young boy, you were taught and encouraged to "be nice". Even at the expense of justice, we were instructed to "grin and bear it", etc. Coughlin makes a case that Christian men need not to be "nice", but to be "good"; to be men of integrity who speak up when it is merited. He points to Jesus, who would never make it in the church today because he was firm and spoke his mind. In other words, he was not always nice. This is a must read for all nice guys!

When a news maker makes themself a special spot on page six daily by their actions...They are SCHMUCKS!

Jackie Mason, humorist, Comedian and winner for his one man Broadway show "The World According to Me", takes on this challenge of pointing out the "Schmucks" of the world in this abridged CD.

In someways, this seem like an updating of some of "World". He takes on such Schmucks like Bill & Hillary Clinton, Jews for Jesus, Madonna and France with his pointed humor. His wit is razor sharp and so are some of the points he takes on.

Does he make sense? More than you will know. This is more than comedy, it is a lesson in why people do stupid things. His viewpoints make for good listening

Jackie, all I hope is I am not on next year's list!

You can practically hear Mason's voice speaking from the pages, laying insult upon insult in joyous irreverance for the self-appointed schmucks in the world. Doesn't matter if you're dead or alive, if you're a shmuck, you can't even hide in the dirt. Rich schmucks, dead schmucks, globo-schmucks and even dumb shmucks from Yasser Arafat to Katie Couric get lambasted. From now on, whenever Al Sharpton's face pops up on your TV screen, you'll be shouting "praise the lard". Product Description

From the mid-1950s through the mid-1990s, the Cleveland Indians fielded team after team that just couldn't win. Those forty long years, before the opening of Jacobs Field and the "era of champions," are remembered by many as the "bad old days."
Yet each of those lousy teams had its share of pretty good guys, likeable and colorful young men who earned a spot in fans' hearts, if not the Hall of Fame.
Guys like "Super Joe" Charboneau, whose Rookie of the Year season inspired a nickname, a book, and a theme song, but whose career flamed out fast. Or Gomer Hodge, the former farm boy who went 4-for-4 in his first plate appearances with the Tribe and proudly announced that he had a 4.000 batting average.
Veteran sportswriter Russell Schneider caught up with 45 former Indians players who played in Cleveland during the "bad old days" and found out what they think now about their playing days and their lives after baseball.
There's good-fielding shortstop Duane Kuiper, who was satisfied hitting just one home run in eight seasons because, he said, "Any more than that and people start expecting them." And former knuckleball pitcher Tom Candiotti, who never pitched a no-hitter but did throw a perfect game--as a pro bowler.
"Immortal" Joe Azcue tried hard to live up to his early nickname but whose batting average proved him merely human. And shortstop Frank Duffy considered the Indians of the mid-'70s "just like a happy family" compared to what he found when he was traded to the Boston Red Sox.
Sometimes nostalgic, sometimes tinged with disappointment, often humorous and insightful, their stories will take Tribe fans back to an age before multi-million dollar superstars, when the players were in it for the love of the game.

4 out of 5 stars Simple to read for the average guy.......2007-10-09

For a little over $12, this book gives a lot of info about the different types of clothes/accessories that the average guy would not have been aware of. It simple enough for anyone to read and gives a lot of useful tips without getting into too much detail about useless stuff.

For example, the discussion on different types of pants and when it is appropriate to wear them is really very practical. A highly-recommended book for anyone who wants to improve their wardrobe.

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful book.......2007-01-13

This book has lots of good advice and helpful tips. It is written in Carson Kressley's inimitable style which means you will laugh out loud at times.

4 out of 5 stars Thank you Carson!.......2007-01-03

I bought this book for my husband. He's an engineer and they have a "uniform" - khaki pants and a golf shirt. I tried for years to upgrade this image, but to no avail. With a recent promotion and some hard earned weight loss, I wanted him to be more knowledgeable about how he gets dressed in the morning. I bought several books on men's fashion, but this is the one he refers to most often. It's simple, straight forward and funny, and it's getting good results. Thank you Carson!

4 out of 5 stars Informative and Funny.......2006-11-01

Karson's Approach is very informative and funny although I might not agree with all of his ideas on styling. I like the fact that he can be very 'in-your-face' but that's great and at least he's being honest with a lot of fashion faux pas that people make.

1 out of 5 stars Which one is this - Remus, or Romulus?.......2006-03-25

Does he BELIEVE he was hired for TV because of his GOOD TASTE? Or just to laugh at in humiliation of him and his "fashion victims"? Obviously Carson is someone raised by wolves, but I do "Lupa" and the boys an injustice by failing to note their superiority.

Just look at the dork! Wearing old lady slippers, and NO SOCKS!

His advice is all on the cover, and looking at it to see what NOT to do is all that's necessary to receive full benefit of the book.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not specific enough.......2007-07-09

I'm teaching a Sunday School class for 7th-8th grade girls, and am collecting as many resources as possible. This book is good, but I wish there were more specifics and suggestions. Overall, a pretty good resource.

5 out of 5 stars Talking Up Let's Talk!.......2004-08-24

Where was Danae Dobson when I was a teenager in the sixties? I certainly could have used her sage counsel during that turbulent decade. I recently purchased her new book Let's Talk, as a
graduation gift for my niece, and ended up reading it cover to cover myself. I was captivated. Dobson has penned a teenage treasure chest-a creative compendium of important insights
teenage girls need to know about God, guys, girlfriends, and growing up. With wisdom that belies her own youthful years, Dobson has filled this tiny tome with a plethora of inspiration
about everything from peer pressure to parents to personal relationships with God-and more! Her brownie story alone (which takes the cake!) is worth the price of the book! Good writing
may run in the Dobson family, but clearly Danae Dobson has found her own voice and uses it to sound a clarion call for teenage girls. If they harken it, they will navigate the teen-age years
successfully with the grace, wisdom, and blessing of God. This book is a must-read for both teenagers and those who love them.

5 out of 5 stars Baseball for the Soul.......2004-04-14

I think Jack Walsh, and Marshall Cook have captured the heart and soul of Baseball's greatest players. Baseball Good Guys is a book that will inspire the reader to learn more of the Character and Integrity of these players. The statistics are there, but their ability to overcome adversity, personal problems, prejudice and more, will inform the readers of the real skills of these players.

Be forewarned, some of the pages come to life, in such a way that splinters (possibly from the bats) seem to leap into your eyes.

Good book, should be a must read for school athletes and those of us who lived during some of those years.

5 out of 5 stars Back to the age of innocence.......2005-04-03

This book is for those who have a good working relationship with their families and want a guidebook to the old fashioned ideas of courtship. I was a little skeptical of this book at first only because I've grown up in this modern ultra sexed society. When I had the chance to read it I found myself highlighting practically the whole book. If you've read books like "Anne of Green Gables" and wished that you too could engage in the gentle courtship Anne received in her Victorian society, this book will help guide you down that path. This is most definately not for everyone. Most people I know could never give up their way of dating and cohabitating together before marriage. We live in a selfish self centered world. For those who are fed up with these modern ways and long for the old, give this book a try. And remember, 75% of all married couples who cohabitated before they were married, get divorced. This is a terrible statistic. Fight the trends and go for the road less traveled.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for any age!.......2005-01-07

Hi, This isn't just for teens! Yes, there maybe some references in the book that seem more like "teen" kind of things. However, even an adult looking for a true husband is able to glean something out of this book. I find that "courtship" is a better word for true "dating". Usually, it takes a few months to one year to get to really know someone even if you live long distance. If you really think that person is Mr. Right, then its time for the "courtship" stage where you get more serious and this is still before engagement. It's like a pre engagement stage. Once you are engaged--you shouldn't have to be thinking "what if I am wrong". You should KNOW once you follow the advise in this book. That way the engagement stage is REALLY the time to Prepare for Matrimony and not have to worry so much. So, give this book a try even if you are an older adult looking for the "perfect" husband. He's out there--just give it a try!

5 out of 5 stars Wish I had this book 28 years ago..........2003-03-28

If young men and women would read and heed this book we would probably have less divorce. I know that if I had read this book before I got married we would have had less "bumps" in the road during those first few years. This book helps you ask the pertinent questions to see where you may have the problems and correct them before you get married. I recommend it highly for anyone who is even thinking about the dating game. It's a great alternative. The younger the reader the better!Pre-teens would be my suggested audience. Moms and Dads - you will be glad that you purchased this book early and save yourself and your kids a lot of heartache.

This book spares no one. Politicians, sports stars, celebrities, corporations, publishers, crossing guards—they're all fair game. If you are a Schmuck, or just someone who Jackie and Raoul find annoying, there is a fair chance you are on the list.
