Product Description

Birth - 18 months. A straight-forward and light-hearted approach to teaching infants how to communicate using simple American Sign Language (ASL) signs.

Amazon.com

Sign with Your Baby Complete Learning Kit will enable you to communicate at new levels with your baby long before she can speak. This comprehensive package of book, video, and reference guide shows how simple gestures can communicate ideas like "I'm hungry" or "help me." Caregivers grasp baby's needs immediately rather than learn through trial and error. Dr. Joseph Garcia has designed the system so it's not necessary to learn an entire new language, although it also provides a terrific start in American Sign Language for a hearing-impaired child. A fascinating introduction delves into the development of language in children and uses informative line drawings to demonstrate over 150 hand signs for all kinds of actions and nouns. The accompanying video provides practical tips for getting started, some insight into the hows and whys of this method from Dr. Burton White (director of the Center for Parent Education), and inspiring sights of young babies signing effectively with their caregivers. The laminated quick-reference guide lists some of the most common words in any parent's day: cookie, no, and up are but a few. Garcia's clear, concise methods make learning a breeze, and caregivers gain outstanding new abilities to give the best possible care for the babies entrusted to them. --Jill Lightner

5 out of 5 stars Easy to understand / user-friendly.......2007-10-11

This set has many forms of materials included - the quick-view card helpful for babysitters and grandparents, the DVD to fully explain the theory behind sign-language as well as properly demonstrate the motions of sign-language, and a book which covers many of the same points on theory of sign-language as the DVD. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it and after only 1 showing we both picked up many signs to be able to use with our little one.

5 out of 5 stars Signing with babies works.......2007-09-10

We bought Garcia's DVD for our grandson at about 4 months of age. Signs helped him express his needs and even feelings with a minimum of fussing. He is now almost 3 and very verbal & advanced. It may be that he's just a great kid, but we believe signing with babies really works.

2 out of 5 stars Signing is cool -- don't need the video though.......2007-07-08

I like the sign language. It was pretty great when our 9 month old told me he wanted milk the first time! I don't think you need the video though. You can just start repeating certain signs on your own. Just repeat them a lot and be consistent.

The problem we had is that we couldn't get our daycare providers to use the signs. So it seemed like any progress we made got undone by them. He would use the signs with them but they wouldn't recognize it. I can only imagine how that must have been frustrating and confusing for him. So make sure everyone around him is going to use the signs before you start teaching them.

3 out of 5 stars Too much marketing, Not enough vocab........2007-05-26

I started at 7 months, he picked up the first sign at about 10 months, and the rest came around 1 yr. The video/book combination is good because the video shows you the signs and the book is handy for a quick reference.

Drawbacks:
1. I felt like much of the video was still trying to sell me on the idea of doing sign with my baby. It could focus less on marketing and present the information more efficiently.
2. The sign vocabulary is limited to the first stage of sign language learning only. It could be improved by including more vocabulary.

5 out of 5 stars Best Baby Sign Language program.......2007-05-14

I have compared this program with other sign language programs, and it seems to be the best one I have come across so far. At one point, I taught another baby sign language course, whose name I will not mention. The program's signs did not always come close to actual sign language, which I found was offensive to the deaf community. Joseph Garcia's program follows actual signs from ASL, and the program is easy enough to learn if you are willing to put the time and effort into it. I would definitely recommend this baby sign language program for other mothers - the resources are varied - book, DVD, quick reference guide - it's the best out there!!

Book Description

The success of this best-selling text lies in the author's belief that a good text talks with, rather than at, its readers. Shaffer does an extraordinary job of anticipating students' interests, questions, and concerns while treating them as active participants in the process of learning about social and personality development. The Fifth edition of SOCIAL AND PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT features clearly written, current coverage of social and personality development that aids students in discovering the causes, processes, and complexities that underlie developmental change. Students learn why biological and environmental factors, contextual factors such as cross-cultural, familial, neighborhood, school, and peer-group influences cause change in children. Shaffer also explores the approaches that researchers use to test their theories and answer important questions about developing children and adolescents. This book's effective coverage of field research stands out from other texts not only for its accuracy and currency, but because Shaffer consistently juxtaposes classic research with the latest breakthroughs in a way that helps students appreciate how knowledge builds on earlier findings. This edition features a much stronger emphasis on cultural influences on development.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars guided by Bronfenbrenner.......2006-05-30

As an instructor, I found this to be an excellent text. In particular, I appreciated the repeated incorporation of cross-cultural research. This text answers the call for incorporating diversity across the curriculum. Repeated inclusion of cross-cultural similarities and differences, combined with repeated discussions of the interconnections of multiple variables, helps students move away from a "one-size fits all" approach and egocentric thinking. By the end of the semester, when students were presented with a hypothetical problem scenario to resolve, they quickly outlined a list of additional details they would need to know, offering how each variable (parenting style, ethnicity, location of residence, violence within family, etc.) would alter the "goodness of fit" of their intervention. Also, the author does not shy away from presenting research evidence that is sometimes contradictory or inconclusive, which provides an excellent opportunity for in-class discussions of the reality of research and how, as a field, we address these issues. The only drawback is the amount of information sometimes overwhelmed students, so I found it necessary to focus their reading on certain sections of each chapter - however this can also be viewed as strength, since it allowed me to "customize" my course to some extent.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book.......2007-10-05

This book was recommended to me by a newly married woman with stepchildren. I, at the time, was dating a woman with children (none of my own). I was having a difficult time being an 'instant father', and didn't know what to do half the time. I loved this book, and used the information daily. When I am around children now, I still use the information in the book. When I have children of my own, you better believe I'll be re-reading this one. (I also bought this book for my brother)

5 out of 5 stars A MUST-HAVE!.......2007-09-19

There are not enough good things to say about this book. I have it in conjunction with Love and Logic Magic for Early Childhood and contrary to some other reviewers, I love having them both together.

I can't recommend this parenting technique enough. I have a 2 year old boy and we started using love and logic principles just after his 2nd birthday. What a difference it made in us all!!! Just like the authors say - it puts the fun back in being a parent. We are always getting comments on his calm demeanor and our ability to always be patient.

If you or someone you know is struggling with a child, toddler to preteen, this book will change the family for the better. It gives you the exact things to say in all kinds of situations, in fact half to book is dedicated to doing just that. This book gives you the tools to restore peace, happiness, hope, order and fun back into your home. I'm so thankful for this book!

5 out of 5 stars THE best parenting book ever.......2007-09-18

All my friend and I SWEAR by this book. This my not be the ONLY book you need, but it surely is one key book you MUST have. Extremely practical - there are actual cases and actual phrases to use, while explaining the philosophy behind the approach. This is the ultimate "how to" book on raising responsible, moral, kind children who understand cause and effect! It also takes the "you vs me" out of it and teaches children that their choices and actions have consequences. As a Christian, it sits well with me. It is especially excellent with defiant or contrary children, and children raise in foster homes or others who have attachment challenges.

5 out of 5 stars Best parenting book my wife and I have found.......2007-09-03

This is an excellent book on parenting, the best my wife and I have found. The principles work very well - we wish we had found it earlier. We and our children are much happier after using this book.

This is very sound parenting. This book teaches you how to raise responsible children who think about the consequences of their actions. It teaches principles and gives you strategies to help your children anticipate the real consequences of their actions - a good thing to learn when you're still a child and "the price tag is still low."

This book is not the draconian book that some negative reviewers have interpretted it to be. The authors advocate genuine compassion for children who experience realistic consequences to their bad choices. It is true that the principles in this book likely require more work on the part of the parent than other approaches.

Regarding whether this book advocates corporal punishment - it does not. Page 221 from the 2006 edition:

"Spankings ... give kids a quick escape from the responsibility of living with a bad choice. Instead of having to live with consequences and think about solutions, youngsters have a brief moment of pain, and then they're off the hook."

"The original edition of this book advocateded the use of spanking in limited, controlled situations. However, as we have grown in our professions and as more valid research has become available, we have changed our postion. There are many good reasons to avoid the use of spankings...[list follows]."

1 out of 5 stars Sick authors.......2007-08-30

Any author who presents themselves as wanting to help children and then advocates corporal punishment is a sociopath at worst or terribly misguided at best. They should never yield power over someone smaller or weaker than themselves. Maybe the authors need to be physically bullied (ex. spanked) by someone 100+ lbs bigger than them so they can feel what a child feels when some stupid or gullible adult follows their advice. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Parents and caregivers- please think long and hard before you hit the children who are depending on you for love and protection. There are much better ways of discipling children. Learn them.

Ellen's personal experiences as a parent, an autism columnist, and a contributor to numerous parenting magazines coalesce to create a guide for all who come in contact with a child on the autism spectrum.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good book but could be an article.......2007-10-05

The author says the book was originally an article she wrote. She got a huge response and made the article into a book. I think the desired effect of the book isn't probably any better than an article. The ten things are good ones, but maybe not enough for a book. This is a worthwhile book if you are new to working with kids with autism/autism-like features. It is a worthwhile book if you are a parent have feel like you have no clue how to interact with your child (though you do -- use your heart, do what you feel led to. Pray. God will help). As far as learning anything earth-shattering -- no. It is common sense.

5 out of 5 stars Great Quick read.......2007-10-03

This book is a great way to help family and friends learn more about Autism. The book is fast and informative. Anyone can understand it's concepts and empowers people to do something for those affected by Autism in their life.

5 out of 5 stars A Keeper.......2007-10-02

It hasn't been that long since I discovered that Sam has some form of Autism, still not clear what form although I definitely have some strong opinions, but this is the first book I picked up that addresses children and autism specifically.

I am reminded of when I had a stillborn baby.

I had to take my time before I could read anything about stillbirth. It was too painful for a while to even crack open a book.

That is how this has been, there has been quite a bit of grief associated with this realization, so when I began to read Ellen Notbohn's book the tears began to flow because I knew I had found a kindred spirit. The first big distinction she makes, as reviewers have noted, is that my child has autism, he is not "autistic." He is not the disorder. He is Sam, still perfect little Sam, who just so happens to have autism. It is not just semantics and word order, it is state-of-heart.

This invaluable resource gives a short-nuts-and-bolts approach in the beginning and then embellishes with detailed ideas and suggestions for living this life with your child.

I kept thinking, "If I had read this last year, I would have recognized Sam in the pages, we wouldn't be in this educational quagmire we are in..." and then I remembered another very important tidbit in the book.

Patience. Patience. Patience.

There are numerous gems in this title. I wish I had read it years ago, so I could recognize this possibility in my child.

It is highly engaging, practical and easy to follow. I will share it with other family members so they will understand how to relate to my little boy.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Read!!.......2007-09-04

Get it! Read it! This was a wonderful book that put so many things into perspective for me. I have ordered more copies to give to grandparents and my child's teacher. Excellent book!

4 out of 5 stars A good resource for educating friends and family.......2007-08-26

This book is a good, quick read. It provides a broad overview of the typical symptoms associated with ASD. I don't know if I'd rush out and buy a copy for everyone I know, though. Some chapters explain extreme cases of the disorder. I would read it, then maybe recommend certain chapters to friends and family based on your child's individual personality. Maybe even make notes about your child in the margin and then pass the book around. Since ASD is really different in every child, it's hard to make an exact description of the "Ten Things" they'd want you to know. However, the author does make a good attempt, and she presents the information in a way that is easy to understand.

I hate that I saw myself, as a parent, portrayed in the Ineffective Action & Soft Limits categories. I started to recognise behaviors in myself that needed addressing and what success! Thank you Dr. MacKenzie from my whole family!

5 out of 5 stars Setting Limits - Saved my relationships with my Kids and Husband!.......2007-09-24

I can't express how important this book has been in our family. I still return to it every now and then - it's great to re-group and re-learn its lessons. This book gave my husband and I the power to deal with our strong-willed child, and even our more compliant child - together, consistently, fairly, and sanely.

2 out of 5 stars Better books out there.......2007-09-13

This book is based on the ideas in Positive Discipline. There is practically nothing new, except the idea that a spirited child will test your limits again and again, so you have to be even more consistent. There! Now that you know that, just get the Positive Discipline, which is excellent. It describes the background of the method, specific approaches, gives you ideas for all ages. "Setting Limits", btw, is much harder to adapt to a toddler. The writing is leaves something to be desired as well.

5 out of 5 stars Best parenting book I've ever read!!.......2007-09-11

Dr. MacKenzie is a God-send! The techniques in this book are helping to complete transform my relationship with my strong-willed 7 year old (who also has ADHD!). After all the years of being worn down by power struggles and tantrums, I feel like a weight has been lifted off my back. This book is well-written, a quick read, and TOTALLY PRACTICAL. If you have a challenging strong-willed child, there is no other book or advice that will help you more. You will QUICKLY begin to have a calm, cooperative, tension-free home!!

The mother sings to her sleeping baby: "I'll love you forever / I'll love you for always / As long as I'm living / My baby you'll be." She still sings the same song when her baby has turned into a fractious 2-year-old, a slovenly 9-year-old, and then a raucous teen. So far so ordinary--but this is one persistent lady. When her son grows up and leaves home, she takes to driving across town with a ladder on the car roof, climbing through her grown son's window, and rocking the sleeping man in the same way. Then, inevitably, the day comes when she's too old and sick to hold him, and the roles are at last reversed. Each stage is illustrated by one of Sheila McGraw's comic and yet poignant pastels. This starts off kind of cute. The mother has a child in her arms and she tells him, "I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always, as long as I'm living my baby you'll be." As an expression of a parent's unconditional love it's a great little saying from a mother to her son. And then you turn the pages, the kid gets older, and the you see the mom sneaking into the teenage son's bedroom and repeating the mantra. It seems a little Oedipus, as I'd not really like to think about my mom sneaking into my room when I was a teenager but ok, still kind of cute.

Then the son gets married and moves away. Happy ending? Not exactly. Now the mother straps a ladder to her car, drives across town, and breaks into the son's house, sneaks into his bedroom and while he's sleeping with his wife next to him tells him "I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always, as long as I'm living my baby you'll be." Ok, having seen Psycho, I have to say I'm a bit disturbed. This continues through the son's life, until the mother is dying, and the son repeats her mantra back to her.

The last page in the book shows the son, cradling his newborn, repeating his mother's mantra to the baby, and the cycle repeats. If this were a movie, I would have expected the creepy horror music to well up, have the son look into the camera and start an evil cackle as the picture faded to black.

5 out of 5 stars A comfort.......2007-10-03

It was my Kindergarten teacher who introduced me to this book when I was about five years old. It was a hard time for me at that age because my mom was gone a lot but this book made it a little easier. The song "I'll love you forever" still rings true today and occasionally I even get a little misty eyed. Looking back I remember singing it to my grandmother who couldn't help the tears that filled her eyes and a slight smile on her face when she hugged me "Your right little one and it will never change". It's a comforting book about love between parents and yes even grandparents that passes on generation to generation.

This is one of my favorite children's books and will remain so. However I believe that sadly now we are becoming more and more politically correct and thats unfortunately effecting our children's books. Judge for yourself but remember that sometimes if you look to closely you lose the magic completely :)

5 out of 5 stars I love my mom.......2007-09-28

This book is has impacted me in such a way, and from such an early age, that it will resonate forever.
It is only a sad book if you don't know how to celebrate the life of a loved one. I think it's good for children to question the lessons of this book.

5 out of 5 stars a book for every family member / old & young.......2007-09-27

I bought this book years ago for my children who are now adults. We have since bought this book for every member of our family/ extended family. We write the main saying in the book on all our correpondences to each other. It is even on the flower holder at our parent's memorial. It is such an expression of pure love to all family members.

5 out of 5 stars My dying mother read this book to me when I was a homeless drunk. I am no longer a homeless drunk........2007-09-27

You've read the other reviews of this book so you know it is powerful. All I can tell you is that this book is too strong for words. My five year old loves the book but is confused about why I cry and can't ever read the last few pages aloud. If you have children, if you have a mother, this book is for you. It isn't really for kids.

Book Description

“TRACY HOGG HAS GIVEN PARENTS A GREAT GIFT–the ability to develop early insight into their child’s temperament.”
–Los Angeles Family

When Tracy Hogg’s Secrets of the Baby Whisperer was first published, it soared onto bestseller lists across the country. Parents everywhere became “whisperers” to their newborns, amazed that they could actually communicate with their baby within weeks of their child’s birth. Tracy gave parents what for some amounted to a miracle: the ability to understand their baby’s every coo and cry so that they could tell immediately if the baby was hungry, tired, in real distress, or just in need of a little TLC. Tracy also dispelled the insidious myth that parents must go sleepless for the first year of a baby’s life–because a happy baby sleeps through the night. Now you too can benefit from Tracy’s more than twenty years’ experience. In this groundbreaking book, she shares simple, accessible programs in which you will learn:

• E.A.S.Y.–how to get baby to eat, play, and sleep on a schedule that will make every member of the household’s life easier and happier.
• S.L.O.W.–how to interpret what your baby is trying to tell you (so you don’t try to feed him when he really wants a nap).
• How to identify which type of baby yours is–Angel, Textbook, Touchy, Spirited, or Grumpy–and then learn the best way to interact with that type.
• Tracy’s Three Day Magic–how to change any and all bad habits (yours and the baby’s) in just three days.

At the heart of Tracy’s simple but profound message: treat the baby as you would like to be treated yourself. Reassuring, down-to-earth, and often flying in the face of conventional wisdom, Secrets of the Baby Whisperer promises parents not only a healthier, happier baby but a more relaxed and happy household as well.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible! Not based on any science.......2007-10-02

I bought this book when my baby was four months old. I tried every technique in there (early waking, cluster feedings) and nothing helped. I ended up baby "Happy Child, Healthy Sleep Habits" and he basically debunked all her theories with science and baby sleep studies. I tried his theories and now I have a great baby who developed into a toddler that sleeps so well! This book is seriously a waste of time, I need to sell mine or give it away. This woman has no real or scientific experience with babies, I would love for to come to my house and use it on my child, because I will promise you that her stuff doesn't work. Plus, at nine months, giving cluster feedings won't help, babies wake up at that age because of habit or neurology, not because they're hungry. It was just such a waste of money!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Baby Book Ever.......2007-09-27

5 out of 5 stars best book.......2007-09-20

i buy this book for all my friends who are having babies. this book is just incredible. i followed it and my daughter slept through the night at six weeks. i couldn't have been more pleased. too bad i didn't have it when my son was born....
WORTH EVERY CENT!!!!

5 out of 5 stars i agreed with everything in this book! a must for first time moms and dads........2007-09-18

i picked up this book on the recommendation of a friend, and i was not disappointed. the author is a baby nurse and has a "special" way with newborns and infants, and is passing along her wisdom and experiences in this book. i found myself agreeing with everything she had to say, and have implemented her "e-a-s-y" way of caring for infants with my new baby. i also agree with the s-l-o-w technique to determine what your baby might need (why are they crying?), to avoid stuffing a pacifier in their mouth at the first sign of fussiness. one thing to note, my baby is a "textbook" baby, and it was fairly simple for us to implement these techniques. for people with colicy or super fussy babies, using this book may be more difficult and take longer to implement. ultimately, i totally agree with giving a baby a routine (not an inflexible schedule), and for treating babies like the people they are, and respecting them and their personal space. i highly recommend this book!

3 out of 5 stars Maybe a good book if I could read it...........2007-09-17

I'm sure this book has some great advice/insight based on other reviews, but I can't get past the first chapter with this author's informal way of speaking. I have limited free time (as I'm sure all of you new mothers do) and don't want to waste any of it reading complete British slang like "mum" for "mother", "mitts" for hands, instead of "eating" she says "munching" and calling babies "kippers". Worse than that, she calls the reader "luv" every other sentence. I am not Tracy Hogg's "luv" and don't luv her at all for not writing a regular BOOK without slang that I paid $7.99 for.
As a disclaimer: I have nothing against British People and in fact LOVE the British accent. In addition, I love this slang when I'm watching SuperNanny - since that's entertainment for me. But, when I pay money for a Book so I can learn something, I don't want to be annoyed every sentence.
Just my 2 cents..... (or "pounds", however you look at it)

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

The last thing new parents can find time for is quiet reading, so many helpful books on infant care rely on bullet points and a "let's get to the point" writing style. Tracy Hogg, a neonatal nurse, teacher, and mother of two, uses these techniques to good effect in Secrets of the Baby Whisperer. Focusing on newborns and their parents, her simple programs are a blend of intelligent intuition and methods based on years of experience. The first half of the book is devoted to E.A.S.Y--her name for creating a structured daily routine for you and your baby that makes the most of your baby's awake times and also leaves time just for you. These concepts aren't designed to force your bundle of joy into not following her body's needs, but rather to create a feasible middle ground between total rigidity and on-demand food and sleep (and no time for mom to shower). If it still strikes you as too regimented, keep reading. The author makes room for differences in personal style and includes short quizzes to determine whether you're a "planner" or a "winger", and what level of daily structure you are likely to find helpful. In the same chapter, she identifies five general temperaments of infants, how to get an accurate feel for yours, and what methods of care are likely to be the most effective for his temperament. Her statement that babies prefer routine is backed up by research from the University of Denver. While most of the book relies on anecdotes to get the points across, Hogg does find room to back up some of her statements with quotes from various researchers and institutions. Included at the end of the book are assurances that E.A.S.Y. can be followed even with a colicky baby or one who's been ruling the roost for the first few months. Frustrated parents might like to read the last page first: "all the baby-whispering advice in the world is useless unless you're having a good time being a parent" is an excellent reminder to enjoy this time with all of its ups and downs. --Jill Lightner

3 out of 5 stars Some good information.......2007-08-29

I did get some vital information on putting my kiddo to sleep. But her advice drove me insane when I tried to apply it to a new born! He was just too young at 1 week to perform under her requirements and I felt like a terrible mother with an abnormal kiddo. Now that he is older (2 1/2) months much of what she writes about independence and getting your kiddo to sleep is helpful. When my son was 1-4 weeks his schedule was *his* schedule and I really just had to be there for him. I still co-sleep even though Hogg advises against it and I still like to put my kiddo to sleep in my arms. He sleeps in noisy rooms and quiet ones. The list goes on. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING A WELL READ NEW PARENT CAN TAKE FROM THIS REVIEW IS THIS: read all you can even Hogg's book but always keep your instincts when it comes to raising your baby, no author is you and no one person can know your baby on a personal and visceral level the way you do. On the breastfeeding....I think her tips on the actual act of breast feeding are wonderful as for the politics I could not disagree with her more. This is a very politically and emotionally charged issue no matter your position. As for her being responsible for whether or not a woman chooses to breast feed by the opinions expressed by Hogg in this book: I do not agree. If it takes so little for a mother to quit breast feeding then maybe she just was not cut out for it. I *knew* breast feeding was the best for my kid so I do it...period. Some women just cannot or will not go the extra mile no matter what they read.

5 out of 5 stars Try and read this before the baby arrives.......2007-08-28

This book has been great for us and I believe this is largely because we read it before the baby was born and started implementing Hogg's techniques immediately. Having read both Sears/AP and Ezzo parenting books as well, we have found Hogg's methods to be a great middle ground. The EASY method is working great for us. I love her chapter on Awake activities and appropriate playing at different ages and stages. She breaks down bathing and massage techniques, as well. Her advice on using a pacifier makes so much sense. And, of course, the easy to follow charts that allow you interpret and respond to your baby's cries and movements are excellent.

Best of all though is the confidence we have in putting our baby down to sleep - because we started this from day one we were able to implement Hogg's techniques that allow us to put the baby in her crib while sleepy but still awake and watch her gently drift off to sleep on her own. Our baby has been learning how to self sooth since day one and it's amazing to watch her.

5 out of 5 stars Great information.......2007-08-18

This book was recommeded by my OBGYN. I read a few other books but found Tracy's information and advice useful and accurate. I found her writing style to be enjoyable--like reading a good novel, therefore, I retained the information; rather than trying to recall what you should do in a particular situation.

5 out of 5 stars What a great resource.......2007-08-10

I have a 3 month old baby boy and I would highly recommed this book. In fact, I wish I had read this book earlier because it would have saved me a lot of stress. Tracey's insight is really helpful and I feel that I've connected with my baby much better since reading this book. She also provides a lot of support to women who choose not to breastfeed. I was feeling guilty for not breastfeeding especially since my son had formula issues but Tracey help to put things into perspective about it being a very personal choice and there being nothing wrong with choosing formula feeding.

5 out of 5 stars The best money you will ever spend!.......2007-08-10

This book changed my life.. for the first 8 weeks of my new baby I thought I was going to crack up. I had read that babies shoudl sleep a lot and therefore it confused me that my little one did not. It was not because she didn't like sleeping, it was because I was not reading her cues and not knowing what to expect. This book explains it all very easily and actually it is all down to common sense.. i.e reading your baby and knowing what is wrong. As soon as i read the book i could see where i was going wrong and as soon as i put my little pone on the recomended routine, my life changed forever.. she slept for long periods during the day, all night long and basically became a dream child. It is all about common sense and once you get over the initial hurdle of trying to find time to read the book, your life will be chnaged forever!

5 out of 5 stars The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome.......2007-10-08

Tony Attwood had been recommended to me by a therapist specializing in autism spectrum disorders as one of the best authors of material on AS. I purchased this book and have found it to be very complete and informative and helpful in more fully understanding Asperger's Syndrome. It is very professionally written. I would definitely recommend this as standard reading/reference to anyone interested in AS.The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome

4 out of 5 stars The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome.......2007-10-07

I went through two highlighters on this book! It is a good explanation of Asperger's Syndrome and the ways of dealing with it. As I read different abilities and disabilities associated with the "disorder," I recognized many of my friends and relatives as having at least some shades of the disorder. Perhaps there are more Aspies out there that this book would help with "self-diagnosis" and "self-help" than anyone really knows. If you know someone who was "wierd" to his/her classmates, suggest they read this book. Suddenly, they may find that "wierd" is indeed an honor.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful, but Highly Repetitive.......2007-09-01

Attwood's book provides good insight to Asperger's Syndrome, bringing out the key symptoms (emotional "deafness," motor clumsiness, difficulty making and keeping friends, preference for solitude, liklihood of accompanying depression or anxiety disorder, etc.), as well as suggestions for adults on how to help a growing-up child with these symptoms. On the down-side, however, the book is more than a bit repetitive, and would benefit from at least a chapter or two on self-help for adults. (Realistically, on the other hand, it is not too difficult to figure out appropriate strategies for oneself while reading through the book.)

5 out of 5 stars Aspergers guide.......2007-08-07

My son was diagnosed with a mild case of Aspergers. His therapist suggested this book. I am so glad I listened to him! This book is easy to understand and has helped us to understand our son and help him better. This book is a must for any family member(grandparents included). I am actually using it like a study book. I am highlighting parts that I find most applies to our son.

4 out of 5 stars Great book .......2007-08-05

Very good book with a lot of excellent information. I'd recommend this as the first book to be read on the subject of Asperger's Syndrome, because it provides an excellent foundation of knowledge on the subject.
