Book Description
John Hart creates a literary thriller that is as suspenseful as it is poignant, a riveting murder mystery layered beneath the southern drawl of a humble North Carolina lawyer. When Work Pickens finds his father murdered, the investigation pushes a repressed family history to the surface and he sees his own carefully constructed facade begin to crack. Works troubled sister, her combative girlfriend, his gold digging socialite wife, and an unrequited lifelong love join a cast of small town characters that create no shortage of drama in this extraordinary, fast-paced suspense novel. Harts mastery of prose and plot belies his newcomer status as he explores the true heart of a man. An illuminating anatomy of a murder and the ripple effect it produces within a family and a community, The King of Lies is a stunning debut.

Best I've read this year!.......2007-10-09
When someone said you can't put this one down, they were absolutely right. Hart has won a place on my "keep 'cause your gonna want to re-read this one in your old age" shelf. Wow - great characters, so well described, that you willingly walk in their shoes and feel their pain. The story line was original and felt fresh. How many books have you picked up lately, and it's the same old, same old? King of Lies was a breath of clear, fresh air, - or maybe I should say humid, soggy, boggy air - I do love those Carolina settings. Hart is a master of the descriptive phrase "the decision stole into me like a thief" - "the physical slap of harsh words" - if you're like me, you'll wish for a yellow marker to preserve them. This review will be short, as I must go out and get Hart's new book, Down River - I can't wait to get back to the Carolinas! Time well spent - bravo, John Hart.
The King of Lies.......2007-08-23
The author wrote a remarkable book, full of mystery, heartfelt emotion, and suspense.
Written in a first person perspective, the book so powerfully drew me into Work's world that I felt I was leaving a friend when I stopped reading, and couldn't wait to pick up the book again to reconnect with him.
Congratulations to John Hart for well deserved success with his first book! I look forward with great anticipation to the release of his next book, Down River, on October 2nd.
I admit it: I'm jaded. I did not expect this book to capture me like it did.......2007-08-16
Two late nights, and I was done. Not just another thriller, not like the others.
Hart's quiet, tortured protagonist Jackson Workman Pickens--known to all as Work--lives in the wake of his attorney father Ezra whose mysterious disappearance inhabits every crevice of his troubled life. Mix in a depressed, damaged sister, an ungrateful trophy wife, and the ruin of an inherited legal practice, and you have quite the mess when Ezra turns up murdered and Work is the prime suspect. The characters might seem like the ones we've read about before, but Hart is careful to give each a depth and "realness" that takes them beyond the stock thriller cast.
Hart, as North Carolina lawyer-turned-novelist knows trouble, and reading this double-quick, stylized novel shows off not only his sharp skills in storytelling but also an uncanny ability to grab a reader by the throat and not let go until the final page. A first novel that recalls early Grisham--when his stories were visceral--Hart makes the violence done to his father personal ("I saw a porcelain stretch of jawbone and remembered whiskers there..."), but Hart complicates things by Work's dispassionate reaction: "this was the most human my father had ever appeared to me."
As the title promises, lies abound everywhere, leaving the reader to wonder how the truth will out. (Unlike a few other prescient readers, I didn't figure out the end until I was there.) Hart, whose prose style makes me think of recent Dennis Lehane, allows the red herrings to perch on every well-tuned character's shoulder, and still delivers the ending that satisfies but never manipulates.
I await novel number two and expect that Hart is going to take us to the next level. Long live the literary thriller.
Outstanding Debut Novel.......2007-08-12
Hart captures the essence of small town life in this multi-layered story. The main character, 'Work', finds himself caught in a web of greed, power, and deceit after the murder of his father. The small town setting, and Works' reaction to the events around him, carry a ring of authenticity.
While the unveiling of the murderer is not a shock, it provides the most satisfying of the possible conclusions. Most of the other characters, while certainly flawed, just would not have fit the murderer role as well.
What makes this book deserve 5 stars is Hart's tight control on the plot, and his commitment to keeping the story true to its setting . Almost every scene and every conversation added meaning to the storyline. The only complaint I have was mentioned by another reviewer. The hit and run plotline towards the end seems a little forced. The same result could have been achieved with a more plausible approach.
Review of the King of Lies .......2007-08-02
John Hart, The King of Lies
St. Martin's 2006, 371pp
This is an absolutely terrific first novel which has me looking forward eagerly to Down River, his upcoming second novel.
The King of Lies begins with a dramatic start in looking at the complexity of life, the ability to live a lifetime of lies, and how small surrenders lead to a lifetime of pain.
The novel's believability captures the complexity of family maneuvers, passions, and uncertainties and combines tragedy with mystery to keep you awake late into the night turning the pages.
I found the ending totally unexpected but totally believable. That is a rare combination.
Finally, on almost every page, I found myself learning from the shrewd observations and insights of a man who clearly loves life, loves the South and loves his family.

First Person Plural: My Life As a Multiple.......2007-05-07
This is a book for people who are truely interested in Ego State Theory. Also, it is a very informative and engaging book for people who have been diagnosed with DID. Cameron West brings his personal struggles to the public and is able to impart his angst as well as his optimism to readers.
There aren't enough synonyms for "bad" to describe this book........2007-03-09
I bought this book in a second hand bookstore and before I finished the first chapter I was already distracted by West's appalling overuse of groan-inducing metaphors. This book must contain the largest collection of bad metaphors ever published. You can scarely turn a page without being assaulted by another embarrassingly dreadful metaphor, or an irrelevant, boasting description of his cars, clothes, appliances, etc. The impression I was left with (besides the fact that this guy REALLY should have gotten someone else to write the book for him, or at the very least should have found a competent editor), is that it's fake. I don't doubt that Mr. West has psychological issues, but more than anything, you get the impression that this is a man who craves attention. It's obvious that West wrote the story with a movie in mind, as it reads like a bad screen play. I believe in DID, but I don't believe Mr. West.
not a technical volume.......2006-11-16
Just a true story of a family and the affects of a MPD father on that family. Down to earth. Showing how and what the family memebers could do to support the father. I was happy to see a family unit working together. There is very little technical, big words describing MPD
but from the patients view and family. It is a story. Not a school book that is cold with descriptions and theories. Helped me a lot.
And who would want to read about the worst kind of sin? .......2006-08-03
I've always been fascinated with the intricacies of the human mind. After completing a book about a patient with schizophrenia, I picked up for a change this book about Disassociative Identity Disorder. I've to tell you, in sharp contrast to the effort it took me to comprehension the symptoms of schizophrenia, DID required challenging- no, scratch that- almost mind-bending attempt on my behalf to comprehend how the brain could invent such a mechanism to cope with abuse.
The story spans over the course of several months and examines in detail tribulation after tribulation. The author, Dr. West, paints a picture of a painful and chaotic existence, beginning with the emergence of several male and female identities and ending with his treatment. Thankfully, readers are spared the details of his childhood abuse. And who would want to read about the worst kind of sin? Of course, it must have taken a superhuman effort on his part to complete this heartbreaking book. How could one retain control of his own fragile mind when so many identities constantly struggle to burst out in the open and retain control of his body? Truthfully, it's beyond my imagination.
Despite Dr. West's attempts to keep a level of sanity within the pages, readers should be prepared for a quite confusing narrative. As identities came out, one is forced to struggle to understand the intricate emotions of each personality. There were times when I wanted to stop reading as my interest wavered during certain dialogues. At other times I was fully captivated in the story (especially towards the end when the author finally accepts the reality of his misfortune).
For someone who wasn't very familiar with this type of psychological disorder, I found the book very informative. For those interested in learning about how the disorder manifests itself in the beginning, what impact it has on a patient, and how the person learns to cope with it, pick up a copy of the book.

Non Co-Conscious View.......2006-06-16
I have heard many people bash this book, but as a multiple who is NOT co-conscious with many of her alters...I found it extremely helpful in establishing contact with them. Yes, it reads like a novel. He wasn't attemping to be a doctor and write it as a "how to" guide. It lets you into the feelings and the uncertainly. There is much speculation and doubt within the pages. I know how that feels.
But one thing stands out above everything else. He made the point that he doesn't have DID...he IS multiple and that was a break through for US...all of US. His self discovery and journey, no matter how clinical or non-clinically written helped to provide a door for me to walk through.
I strongly recommend this book to others that are not connected to their inner world and are trying to just find the path along the journey.

Short but to the point - a useful gift.......2007-08-30
This book is aimed at people who were sexually abused as children and are avoiding the subject of their past or don't think it is relevant to their problems of the present. If you care about someone who is clearly failing to cope with life in general, and you believe they have been abused, then this book makes an excellent gift. It is delicate and offers examples to introduce the topic. It is surprisingly compact, with a fairly simple message, that will hopefully lead to empowerment to take the next step.
Out of the pile of books I purchased to educate myself and give to my survivor friend, this book was the one I chose to give her first. It is thin and short, so hopefully it won't frighten her off reading it. I was quite nervous about giving it to her, but it was appreciated. She didn't think it would be helpful though and I haven't convinced her to open it quite yet. I know it is what she needs to do. Being light on the details, it will need to be replaced with something heavier down the track. If we get to that point it will have been *so* worth it!
A Review of the Basics.......2007-08-14
This book is a very good review for your self of esteem at this diffucult time in your life. It's very easy to read and its not too long either. Personally, for me I thought it was too basic. I need more help than it gave. I need more to do with what happens in adult hood to help you get over or deal with what happend when you were a little younger. Like preteen. This book focuses on children that were abused and not preteens.
Beginning to heal.......2006-07-06
An excellent book for survivors who are starting to deal with the effects of childhood sexual abbuse.
A perfect prelude to the comprehensive extension "the courage to heal"
Much Needed.......2005-02-03
Like their other book, "Courage To Heal", this book is a must read for those in the abused community. It will help you to understand so much of what goes on inside the minds of those that have been abused. A Book that should be read by everyone, abused or not. Prevalant information and help, as well as inspirational.

Book Description
Vaccine A tells a story of betrayal, of medical arrogance flourishing in the absence of public accountability, shielded by an unquestioning deference to national security. Investigative journalist Gary Matsumoto reveals that thousands of young men and women in the U.S. Armed Forces were subjected to medical experiments that were conducted without their knowledge or consent-and that have put them in grave danger. Not only have military scientists performed unethical experiments on U.S. and British soldiers; not only are they refusing to admit either the experiments or the effects they caused; not only are they continuing to use a deadly substance in experimental vaccines-this substance is being developed for use in vaccines intended for mass immunization around the globe. In an alarming narrative, Vaccine A recounts this scientific tragedy-from the U.S. Army's tradition of medical experimentation on soldiers through to the present, where the consequences of these experimental vaccines, if administered to civilians, will be unimaginably devastating.

How the government hates ill veterans and wants them to die.......2007-09-30
The books documents a slow death. Painful and debilitating. The government does not care.
A fascinating subject, but a repetitive book.......2007-02-18
I had been waiting a year to find the time to read this intriguing book. However, having just finished it, I find myself dissatisfied and frustrated. While the subject is certainly interesting and one on which we should probably all educate ourselves, I found the book to be extremely repetitive. As a medical student, the science wasn't over my head but I caught myself skimming parts of the last 75 pages for new information that hadn't already been written about earlier in the book. Matsumoto says the same thing 400 different ways... the only part that drew me in were the personal stories scattered throughout the pages. Reading the book jacket is probably sufficient to tell you everything you'd want to know... I'm thoroughly disappointed.
It reads like a novel.......2006-07-13
Gary Matsumoto is a very talented author. This book is written in the style of a novel, even though it is non-fiction and scientifically oriented. The science is explained in lay person's terms and is easy to understand. The story is well paced and keeps one's interest.
Everyone to whom I loaned this book just loved it, even though its frightening to think we're living under a government that would allow harmful vaccines to be used on people. The information in this book is important to the general public and could save lives. The only people who would not enjoy this book are the ones who trust the government and the pharmaceutical industry and could not stand to have that trust shaken.
This excellent exposý should be a bestseller!.......2006-05-06
I had originally planned on a military career and was destined for Annapolis back in the 1980s, but then learned that hundreds of U.S. servicemen had been cruelly abandoned in Vietnam by "our" government as POWs. (Read "Kiss The Boys Goodbye")
Well, the treason continues...
Matsumoto's superb book chronicles modern evidence that our military has again been given the shaft. While Vaccine A may not have originally been a conspiracy, the subsequent coverup certainly is. Afflicted men and women who honorably fought for America are being told that their vaccine-induced afflictions are imaginary or fakery.
If you want to serve your country, be sure that you are not taking a dramatic health risk from your government in doing so. If you've a child who is considering enlisting, read this book before they unknowingly sign away their life for dangerous medical experimentation performed without their informed consent.
Squalene vaccines are now being stored for the rest of us, for the next overblown or contrived health issue. You look at your food before you eat it, don't you? Maybe you should look at the next vaccine very carefully before it's injected into your body.
Our Gulf War vets had no way of knowing that the squalene vaccine was extremely harmful. But thanks to their unwitting sacrifice, we can protect ourselves with this book.
A Must Read for All Citizens!.......2005-06-05
What is the cost of Freedom? Within this well researched book is an example. The Anthrax vaccine given during the Gulf War through current times, laced with a toxic substance call squalene, is such an example. The research within this book is beyond question. Every veteran, patriot, and ordinary citizen of the USA, Canada, Great Britian, Austraila, and possibly New Zeland should read this book, no holds barred! Highly recommended!

Halfway House, Katharine Noel's triumphant debut, does far more than expose the highs and lows of battling mental illness; rather, it leaves readers with a sense of longing that transcends the subject matter. Told from the perspective of five family members, Noel expertly captures each character's essence with unapologetic honesty, creating sympathies that would falter under a less gifted writer. The result is a profound look at how a crisis can both destroy and reinvent a seemingly typical family.
Set in rural New Hampshire, Halfway House tells the story of the Voorster family, whose lives are upended when 17-year-old Angie suffers a breakdown and is eventually diagnosed with bipolar disorder. As Angie shuffles between hospitals, dorm rooms, halfway houses, and her childhood home, the side effects of her disease and treatment impact each member of her family. Her father Pieter, a Dutch-born cellist, retreats into himself, while her mother Jordana begins an affair. Angie's brother Luke finds comfort in his girlfriends, especially Wendy, whom he meets while at college in Wisconsin. Eventually, familial relationships must be broken in order to be reinvented. In the process, family dynamics must shift, and each character must confront their own demons in order to emerge on the other side.
From One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest to Girl, Interrupted, the subject of mental illness is hardly uncharted in modern literature. What Noel does is go beyond the disease to explore the consequences of crisis, both punishing and redemptive, without compromise or excuses. That is what makes Halfway House a wonder, and a pleasure to behold. --Gisele Toueg
Book Description
One day, Angie Voorster — diligent student, all-star swimmer, and Ivy League-bound high school senior — dives to the bottom of a pool and stays there. In that moment, everything the Voorster family believes they know about one another changes. Set in a small town in New Hampshire, Halfway House is the story of Angie's psychotic break and her family's subsequent turmoil. Each of her family members responds differently to the ongoing crisis: Her father Pieter, a professional cellist, retreats further into his music; her mother begins a destabilizing affair with a younger man; her younger brother, Luke, first pushes away from her then later drops out of college to be closer to her. Though the Voorsters manage for a time to maintain a semblance of the normalcy they had "before," it is not until Angie is finally able to fend for herself that the family is able to truly fall apart and then regather itself in a new, fundamentally changed way. With grace and precision rarely seen in a first novel, Noel guides readers through a world where love is imperfect, and where longing for an imagined ideal can both destroy one family's happiness and offer redemption.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting Story of Mental Illness.......2007-09-26
I enjoyed this book. I liked the way that the story was told in different perspectives. It was interesting to see how the main character's mental illness affected her brother and parents. I would recommend this book to anyone!
Depressing.......2007-07-18
I found this to be one of the most depressing novels I've read in a long time. Not because of Angie's mental illness which was really the only interesting aspect but because of the other characters. Ugh. I could not find one positive thing to react to in either of her parents....both struck me as self-obsessed depressives. Luke and Angie seemed to have some spunk at least but even his girlfriend, Wendy, seemed flat to me. Reading about Jordana and the baby bunny rabbit at the end did me in. Was it supposed to be some clever metaphor for her (failed) relationships? To me the book ended with not much hope or resolve and by the end I wish I hadn't wasted my time.
Not even halfway decent.......2007-06-17
Katherine Noel's debut novel reads like she wanted to write a book about a girl with bipolar disorder and built the story out from there, making sure the family was sufficiently screwed up and that each plot point served the greater theme. The end result feels forced, mechanical; above all, inauthentic.
It's a shame, really, given that in the hands of a more capable writer, Angela Voorster might be an effective protagonist. She's headed to an Ivy League college, a star athelete and suddenly stricken with mental illness in the middle of a swim meet. What's most interesting about her is that she never quite comes to terms with her bipolar disorder. It's as much a part of her as her hair color or height, another stage of her life that will surely pass. Though at times the descriptions of other halfway house residents or Angela's post-breakdown interactions with friends and family can be tiresome, Angela is, at her core, an inspired character. What proves that is that she doesn't always think or do what you'd expect.
When Noel writes in Angela's point of view, the narrative becomes wrought with conflict. Perhaps switching perspectives is the author's major mistake here. As they tell their sides of the story, the reader can't help but want to skip forward and follow Angela again. The supporting Voorsters are too thinly drawn to carry such huge chunks of the novel. Anyone could predict marital trouble for Angela's parents and the standoffish reactions of her brother; they don't need extra time and their actions feel like padding that just distracts from the main story.
Very true to life account of a family struggling.......2007-06-07
Ms. Noel's treatment of this story is wonderful. A young woman's mental illness just rips this family up, and we are allowed to read from the point of view of each participant. It is very real and touching.
couldn't put it down.......2007-04-18
I couldn't believe that this was this authors first novel. It is absolutely awesome. Her writing gives you a very vivid picture of what it must be like to live with someone with bi-polar disease. It seems that the book would be depressive, but it is just the opposite. It is insightful and captures the compassion and anguish that this girls family feels as it struggles to cope with her illness. The story is told beautifully; literally couldn't put it down until I finished it.

Whitewater Rescue Manual is for all whitewater padlers, beginner to expert. This book presents the best techniques for self-rescue and rescue of companions on the river.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent reference for the whitewater enthusiast........1998-09-08
Mssrs. Walbridge and Sundmacher cover the subject of whitewater rescue well. It is geared toward the recreational boater, but is also a valuable tool for the public safety officer (police, sheriff, fire/rescue,SAR, ranger, etc.). It does not cover reading whitewater, since assumes the reader is already a boater of some sort. It does present the most common problems and solutions. In addition it covers use of the tools needed to safely execute timely rescues. Easy reading, excellent photographs and drawings illustrate the points well.

Not at Deveraux's best........2007-06-24
Jude Deveraux is my all-time favorite author, but this work is not up to par with her usual standards. When I pick up a Deveraux, I expect a fantastic love story. This seemed to me to be more of a "coming of age," but for a woman in her forties who never got the chance to "come of age" as a teenager. It was more about her growing up and realizing things about herself and her family than about the love.
I didn't think the mystery overshadowed everything else, and I thought the characters were well-developed, but they didn't seem to get anywhere in their relationships, except maybe for Eden's relationship with her daughter.
Also, am I the only one who thought "the other guy" was more suited to her than "the guy who got the girl"? I found myself frustrated with all the characters by the end of the book, and frustrated at the not-so-fairytale ending.
I didn't have trouble getting through the book, as I've seen other people say, but I was certainly a little disappointed in it, as I have been with several of her latest contemporary novels. (Holly and Carolina Isle come to mind.) I find myself wishing the old Jude would come back.
Couldn't Put It Down.......2007-02-15
I am proud to admit I am a fan of Jude Deveraux, but this book was better than the rest I have read. The heroine was believable. The story kept me trying to figure out what was going to happen next. I was surprised to the very last page. If you like Jude's books, you will love this one.
A hard time staying focused.......2007-02-14
Overall,I thought the premise of the story showed promise. What I found, after forcing my way through reading, was that the plot is not up to Jude's normal standards. The theme seems to drag and it's hard to stay intereseted when the plot changes so very much and so drastically every five pages. I also found he lack of romance a bit disappointing. It really didn't feel like there was enough of the charecters interactions to understand them. It's definitely not her useual style. Her romance writing style is what I like so much about herbooks, and I saw none of it at all.
Nancy Drew.......2006-11-19
If you loved Nancy Drew as a kid, you will love this adult version. It absolutely took me back to those days when I couldn't wait to read what happened next and solve the mystery - only this one has an adult twist.
Just OK.......2006-11-08
I am a huge fan of Jude's. However, this book rambled along. If your looking for humor like you are used to seeing in her older books, you won't find much of it in this one. The supporting characters weren't very supporting with the exception of the leading man (not men). This book is worthwhile to check out from the library though.
Book Description
A series of personal stories from some of the non-Jews, including gypsies, political and religious activists, the physically challenged, and other "undesirables," who were persecuted but escaped the fate of the five million Gentiles murdered by the Nazis.

No one has a monopoly on suffering.......2007-07-23
It would seem that the world has been held hostage thinking one group or another deserves more because they have suffered more than anyone else. Our history books have misinformed us and downright lied about the experiences of so many people as if they did not exist. When we speak of genocide the first thing ringing in our ears is the Holacaust in Germany and what happened to 6 million Jews. What about the 20 million Armenians on April 24,1919 (or thereabouts). What about 9 million Africans drowned in the Middle Passage. How about the annihilation and almost termination of the indigineous people of the Americas. The importance of this book lies in taking a factual, first person, look at the other resident citizens of Germany who were also issued a death penalty under Nazi rule. Hopefully knowing the world wide experience of Genocide (still going on), we as people of the world can stop it.
A review from a 12 year old.......2005-01-19
I thought this was an amazing book. It talks about all the others out there who were affected by Hitler, showing it was not only the Jews who were affected and killed, but many others, like the homosexuals, gypsies, ect. The book offers many different opinions and people, and I thought it was an amazing and saddening book.
Pity.......2004-04-18
Pity this book is out of print, for it is worth remembering that many millions of non Jews were enslaved and persecuted by the Nazis, the majority of whom were (as recently scholarship confirms) Ukrainians.
my review.......2001-12-04
The Other Victims was a book of real life stories from the Holocaust. I liked this book because it tells how people had to go into hiding, how they had no freedom, and how they fought back. The book is mainly about people trying to escape from Germany to America or a safe country. My favorite chapter was Bubili: a young Gypsy's fight for survival. Once I started to read this book I couldn't put it down. The reason I couldn't put this book down was it was all true. I thought it was hard to believe it actually happened. The people were killed because of their religion, color, looks, and trying to stop the wrong that was going on.
The Other Victims by Ina R. Friedman.......2001-02-14
I really liked how this book showed the persecution of all people not only the Jews. In almost all other books I've read about WW2 they talk about the persecution of the Jews. This book made the Holocaust more real to me. It gave me a better perception of what the Nazis were really doing and to some extent why. I think we need to recognize the other groups that suffered also. To me this book is a monument to their suffering.

Soon she can't shake the sensation that someone is watching her, following her every move. The shadow-boxing turns deadly when her worst fears are realized, and Mary has to fight for something a lot more important than partnership -- her life.
Final Appeal, winner of the Edgar Award, features law clerk and single mother Grace Rossi. Starting over after a divorce, Grace takes on a part-time job with a federal appeals court judge, but she doesn't count on being assigned to an explosive death-penalty appeal. Nor does she expect ardor in the court, in the form of an affair with her boss, Chief Judge Armen Gregorian. Then the truly unimaginable happens, and Grace finds herself investigating a murder. She searches for the truth, unearthing a six-figure bank account kept by a judge with an alias and following a trail of bribery and corruption. In no time at all, Grace under fire takes on a whole new meaning.
Customer Reviews:
If there were 10 stars, that's what I'd give all Lisa's books!.......2007-02-07
This gal will make you laugh out loud whether you're listening to one of her books or reading it. She's got a great banter with the characters and the Italian influence (if you are Italian or know Italians) is so great and so right on! Every book of Lisa's that I've read (and that's nearly all of them) has been just a terrific enjoyable ride. She's superb and on the level of Susan Isaacs whom I consider another great author. Take the time to research the books in order and read them that way. The female characters are just simply dynOmite! You'll love every one of them and the books take twists you'd never expect. Excellent mysteries and the all girl law firm is wonderful.
Barbara Rosenblat reads all of Lisa's books and she is such a skilled narrator...you've just got to listen to at least one on tape. I don't know how Lisa chose her, but she's a total delight and makes the books even more enjoyable!
