ENTERTAINING EPIC IS GREAT FUN.......2007-07-27
Civil War. Infinite Crisis. And now World War Hulk. These are excuses for comic books companies to make big $$$$ with some earth shattering all encompassing epic that usually affects the whole comic universe. Trouble is they rarely gel and too many of the sundry titles are weak and frivilous. Well DC just about get it right with this mammoth epic, which is suprisingly cohesive and pretty damn exciting throughout. The whole epic structure is very well done with buckets of action every issue and a terrifically huge climax to tie it all together.
Superman is Back........2007-07-17
The Return of Superman is a good book with lots of battles and destruction. Sometimes it can get cheesy but it's still good. It's a great buy since you get about 500 pages for a good price. When you start reading it and get to the middle, you start to miss the true Man Of Steel. When Superman finally comes back there's a huge battle that is really fun to read and the ending is really good. This book is really fun to read and it doesn't dissapoint.
Satisfies!.......2007-05-30
For any Superman comic fan - get this book - it's GREAT! Even classic! Yes, there are five characters in this story who claim or appear to be Superman and only one of them is truly the real thing. Yes, the plot twists and turns as the story slowly reveals the natures of all the imposters. Yes, it is a great payoff in the end, with a happy ending. Read it as the conclusion to The Death of Superman and A World Without Superman.
My favorite parts are the origin of Steel and his connection to Supes, the Eradicator (who is a complex character - good/bad together), and the Cyborg character - wierd!!
Any complaints that too many characters spoil the story - I have to disagree and say that they all make you appreciate the true Superman and his good character when he finally shows up at the 2/3rd mark in the story.
And Supes with a mullet (long hair from being gone so long -- or because it was written in the early 90s) is just plain humorous. But it works fine for the story.
A huge book - fantastic value - and you'll blaze through it!!! This one definitely satisfies!
Superman Comes Back to Life Even Better Than Before.......2007-04-24
This is a great book that chronicles the period after "Funeral for a Friend" and shows the triumphant return of Superman after he was beaten up by Doomsday. The four imposter Supermen offer an exciting element of wonder and treachery to the story. This is a great buy.

A GORGEOUS BEHIND THE SCENES LOOK.......2006-12-11
One of the best cross-promotional items I've seen based on the new Superman Returns film is "The Art of superman Returns" from Chronicle Books. This 160 page, hardcover book with dust jacket is simply breathtaking as it takes readers behind the cameras of the recent blockbuster film with hundreds of pieces of concept art, storyboards, models and miniatures, paintings, sketches, costumes and photography. It serves to show in vivid depth the amount of detail and planning that goes into making a big budget film like Superman Returns.
The Foreward by director Bryan Singer brings this home right off the bat as Singer is shown standing in the midst of a miniature version of Metropolis, surrounded by buildings taller than he as train tracks and weave all around him. It's a fascinating photo. Full color paintings show Superman's rescue of the stricken jet. Storyboards bring the rooftop standoff sequence to near life as the machine gun pours bullets at the Man of Steel to no avail.
Moving to Smallville, we see the Kent farm recreated in perfect miniature and you can't help but marvel at the skill of the model and miniature artists as no detail is too small for them to include in their work. Once painted, you'd be hard pressed to guess that you were looking at a model, and not a real farmhouse and barn.
One of my favorite parts of the book was a look at Krypton. The Krypton of this film, while similar to the earlier Superman films, is a bit darker and edgier. Superman's Fortress of Solitude gleams compared to earlier films where it was sort of a dull white.
Throughout the book, author Daniel Wallace provides even more detail about the creative process behind the various creations of settings, scenes, and costumes. Metropolis, with all its art-deco accents is truly a sight to behold. Wallace is aided by comments from the film's screenwriters, production and costume designers, not to mention Bryan Singer himself. This is one of those books designed for the avid fan or collector, or even those who might be interested in getting into film work themselves.

It's well...super!.......2006-11-10
I am amazed with the art department for Superman Returns. The designs for The Daily Planet and Lex Luthor's yacht are simply beautiful. Absolutely pick this up and see just how much went into the design of Superman Returns. It's super!
The perfect accompaniment to the movie........2006-10-15
Fans of the film SUPERMAN RETURNS must have this film book: it covers all the concepts and developmental art which served as the movie's foundation, pairing over two hundred works of art - costumes, locations, sets - with interviews with the director, screenwriters, artists and costume designers involved. Sketches and color stills accompany reviews of the plot's progression and choices in production. THE ART OF SUPERMAN RETURNS packs in the color and the depth and is the perfect accompaniment to the movie.

My Two Cents........2006-10-03
I really liked this book because it gave you a behind the scenes look into the film through Pre-Production artwork. I especially enjoyed all the artwork where Superman gets into a spaceship on krypton, this scene was cut out of the movie. Over all the Artists did a good job in recreating the Superman Univerise, the book supports there efforts! A must have for your (art of) Collection:)

Magnificently COOL Book!!!.......2006-08-03
This is a magnificent book. If you were swept away by the artistry of the movie "Superman Returns" like I was, this book is a MUST. Big photographs from the film, sketches, paintings, and storyboards galore abound in this excellent coffeetable edition.
Among my favorites are:
*A full page painting of Superman lying unconscious in a crater in Metropolis Park after falling from space
**An almost 2-page painting of Superman lifting New Krypton out of the ocean, complete with tidal waves and green Kryptonite-laced lightening
***Photos and details about the new Superman uniform - like that it is actually fit for a 9-year old boy, then stretches onto a 6-foot-three Brandon Routh so that there will be absolutely no wrinkles
****Great explanation about Superman's story-opening trip to Krypton and his starship, complete with awesome paintings and photos from deleted scenes
*****Insight about the art deco design of Metropolis - why we just can't take our eyes off of that COOL Daily Planet Building
Superman fans will be happily consumed by the book's artwork and text that will broaden their knowledge and scope of the film. It is a nice size, probably worth more than you'll pay for it, and will definitely become a collector's item! To be re-read often!

A GREAT COMPLEMENT TO THE FILM.......2006-08-07
Continuing their long line of outstanding Visual film guides DK presents "Superman Returns: The Visual Guide" for perhaps the year's most anticipated film. Superman fans know that the fact that this film has finally come out is nothing short of a miracle. For over a decade now there have been rumors and speculation about a new Superman film and who would play the role with names such as Tom Cruise, Nicholas Cage, and Kevin Smith all attached to various Superman film projects at one time or another. There was even discussion of a "World's Finest" version which would team Superman and Batman in the same film.
But finally we got Superman Returns and as usual, DK is on hand with another of their fantastic guides that takes fans through with spotlights on the story, the plots and sub-plots, the locales, and the characters, all with the same fantastic photography we're used to seeing in these books. Rather than focus on the actors, the book instead focuses on the characters and the story, taking us through Superman's birth on the planet Krypton, to his journey to earth where he would be found as an infant and raised by Jonathan and Martha Kent. Although not a direct sequel to the Christopher Reeves Superman films, it does start with the premise that Superman has already been on Earth for some time and then abruptly disappeared, only to return six years later, just in the nick of time to rescue a plane from crashing.
Throughout the guide we'll explore things such as Lex Luthor's Yacht Gertrude, Superman's Fortress of Solitude, the city of Metropolis, and the Daily Planet building. And of course we will meet all of the major characters in depth including Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, Luthor, and Superman's alter ego, Clark Kent. The photography is brilliant as usual with several two-page spreads including one with Superman performing one of his amazing feats of super strength, and another that closely examines Superman's suit that this time is functional as well as fashionable.
In short, this is a book that perfectly complements the film and a great addition to your own library.

Love It!!!!!.......2006-07-13
The book make some senses out of the film, no offense, the movie was well and carefully directed which leave me satisfaction and looking forward to see more. The details in this book show me tiny details that I could not catch from the film such as superman space suit (I like it better than the blue one, so cool!). I suppose that I will go back to see the film one more time. Anyway, the book is great value for money.

It's pretty neat because when read out loud, it's as if Superman is talking. The book encourages everyone to look out for others and to help those in need, so it definitely sends out a great message. This book is loved a bunch in our house and I highly recommend it!

One of the best!.......2006-07-15
I saw the movie first in Imax 3-D and it was amazing! This script by Bryan Singer is spectacular. The only downside for me (for the movie & script) was the character of Kitty (Lex's dumb girlfriend). Parker Posey is annoying at best. Her only role I liked was in Scream 3. As for the character of Kitty, expect someone shallow , annoying & completely not needed in this story (or movie).
Overall, though, Superman Returns is one of the best scripts for comic book movies out there. You can tell there is a lot of love and insight into the character of Superman. Unfortunately they treat Clark Kent as a disguise only, unlike Smallville where Clark is the real him and Superman will be the disguise.
The plot is a little out there. Lex wants to get his share of money from the world by creating basically a new Krypton on earth. When Lois says (quote from memory, might be off a little) "but it will kill millions" Lex responds "Wrong. Billions!" well who's going to pay to live on this land if billions die? For an evil genius this is Lex's dumbest comments. Sure he is supposed to have a downfall so Superman can beat him, but something so simple should have been better thought out.
Otherwise, the script is very well done. Even if you don't see the movie first, it is a quick read and well worth the buy.

Brilliant.......2006-07-15
Wonderful pictures, and it provides a fantastic insight of the Superman Returns movie which I had the privilege of going to see at the movie theatre today. It only came out in the UK today and I must have been one of the first to see it.
It was breathtaking. A must see for all Superman fans.
For any Superman follower it's a must buy, and I can't wait until I can buy the DVD. I have asked Amazon to let me know when it becomes available.
As far as the book goes, it is a good buy because although it has lots of info, it doesn't give the story away.
Excellent. Thanks.
Exactly what you'd want.......2006-07-06
This book is not meant to be an in-depth look at the making of a major motion picture. Rather, it's a book that's about 75% pictures. And really, that's exactly what the fans want. We've been lucky enough to follow the production of this film from Day 1 via Bryan Singer's video diaries (bluetights.net). We've seen how the film was made, and further documentaries will explain it even further. It's just wonderful to sit back and look at the details of the beautiful finished product, and this book delivers. I found myself dwelling on each page, like it was an art book. Considering the great price here on Amazon, if you're big enough of a fan to be on this page, there's no reason that buying this book now won't be worth it!
Superman Returns: The Official Movie Guide = Real Collector's Item.......2006-06-07
I bet you've been thinking whether or not you should purchase "Superman Returns: The Official Movie Guide"...seeing that the film scheduled to be released on June 28th (originally scheduled for June 30, 2006) is just 3 short weeks away.
I got the opportunity to read the guide, and it was a magnificent and mesmerizing quick-read; with pages upon pages of beautiful photography from the film (admittedly for those of you who've spent the last year following the film's production via the internet...some/most of these photos (and information) may not be new to you; but for the uninitiated, you're in for a fabulous treat.
The guide starts with a humble and heartfelt introduction by the director [Bryan Singer]. After that you're taken on a brief journey into the comic book history of the character (for those of you not fully aware of the character's origin outside of the original 1978 Richard Donner film [Superman The Movie] for which Bryan Singer's "Superman Returns" is vaguely branched).
Throughout the rest of the guide, you'll be treated with "glimpses" into, and "interviews" from, cast and crew. This book, very simply lays out the natural progression of the film's story without revealing (too many) key details in plot.
Bottom line...as the years pass, I predict this will be a seriously sought after collector's item. So buy it soon (or now)...before someone on "Amazon Marketplace", "Ebay", or some "other seller" in the next 20 years tries to sell you a used copy of it for $300.00.
Enjoy the Guide...it is a MUST HAVE.
Customer Reviews:
I love this book, because it proves that The Donner Cut is canonical.......2007-02-04
Why do I love this book, it's not because of the art or the stories, It's because it doesn't mention Superman II, how could this be, I think the ending of Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut explains it. So if you buy this book remember, you must forget the Lester cut, and watch the Donner canonical cut. Bye bye picky bi*****! HA HA HA HA!!!!!
Similar in tone to "Superman Returns".......2006-12-15
If you loved "Superman Returns" you'll probably love these comics which do a pretty decent job of bridging the gap between "Superman: The Movie" and the recent film. There is a hint of the events of "Superman II," but not much more than that.
These aren't your average superhero comics, with tons of action and supervillain smack-downs. Rather, the writers (Singer didn't actually pen these scripts, though he probably gave the writers their assignments) take a much more meditative approach to the characters, examining the motives of key players Lois Lane, Martha Kent, Lex Luthor and Jor-El. The finished effect is much like the polished jewels of Krypton--beautiful to look at, but the plaster Hollywood effects become apparent after a while.
There are some really nice moments, such as a brief glimpse of children playing and having fun on Krypton, which the 1979 film gave the impression of being simply a sterile and joyless world. A hint is also given about Krypton's intellectual heritage, which I thought was nice.
The issue featuring Martha Kent was probably the best, and she moves in reverie through her memories of Clark growing up and leaving the farm. It's like reading a really good short story with a superhero as a supporting character.
Luthor's story is probably the least believable, but it does a decent job exploring the unlikely psychology of a man who would nuke California in hopes of a real estate coup.
Lois's issue shows how she got over her past relationship with Superman, and came to write the editorial that made Clark so mad in the recent film. It's readable enough, but it feels like it's just connecting the dots rather than really exploring the character. There is also no clear reference to the events of "Superman II," which was disappointing.
Overall, it's a nice collection that you can put next to your "Superman Returns" DVD. For comic book fans, though, it's a mixed bag.

I Gave the Movie 5 Stars and the Book was Even Batter!.......2007-09-20
People are going to say I'm wierd, but I they shouldn't bother. I already know and I'm not troubled by it. I own the novelizations of a lot of my favorite movies so I think I'm enough of an authority to say that they're hardly ever any good. If nothing else, a book of a movie should do what the movie can't and relate exactly what the characters are thinking and feeling. My copy of Superman Returns is worn out through use. My brother's read it, my sister's read it twice, and, though I almost never read a book more than once (unless it's a comic and therefore not really considered READING), I read it four times. (I'd read it again but I have a stack of unread books on my dresser) For me, this book really hit the spot and here are some of reasons why. For the sake of length, the movie couldn't really go into what exactly Superman found on the other end of his trek into space or give you more insight into Jor-El and Lara as they prepare to make their son Krypton's only refugee on that fateful last day; this book does that and more! Here, Superman is unsure and vulnerable. But he is also strong and you see why he inspires people. It was great to see Martha Kent's reaction to her son's return and Superman's bewilderment at the changes in the world. Some of the highlights, though, are Superman's reaction to Lois' fiance, Richard White, what Richard thinks of him, Kitty Kowalski's meeting with Superman, and the confrontation with Lex Luthor toward the end which was a bit rougher than in the movie (PG-13 rating) and all the better for it. Another plus was that the story was still interesting to me even after seeing the movie, partly because the story was slightly different. Between the issues with Martha Kent and the farm, the only subtle hints about the origin of Jason White, and Lex Luthor's intensity as he does his own dirty work toward the end (and enjoys it--thoroughly) the book manages to slightly surpass the movie in suspense via the changes. I can't decide which version I like better but I'm glad the movie played out the way it did. Still, this review, like all of mine, only reflects MY opinion which seems to be consistently wierd so buy it and see for yourself. Enjoy!
This was bad... it was just so bad........2007-01-29
I gave this two stars out of respect for Superman, but wow was this bad. I think one of the main problems was that it was just too long. There was too much unneccessary filler plot. There is a LOT of background here. A character may have a few seconds on screen, but in the book he gets a few pages. Take for example, the astronauts from the shuttle in jeopardy. In the movie, we see they are tense and probably a little freaked out. That was enough for me. In the book, however we learn of their careers, family and long friendship. (I wish I was joking, really I do.) If you are fans of the nameless astronauts or family members of the actors who played them then I'm sure you'll love it. We also get "Lex and Kitty: How Their Unlikely Love Came To Be" for no extra charge, as well as some good info on Kitty's ex-boyfriend and his life of small crimes. It was too much for me... but again maybe you are the president of the Kitty Fan Club and you want this kind of in-depth reporting on her life. If that's the case, buy one for yourself and loved one. If you and your friends sit around debating the names and personal histories of Lex Luthor's henchmen you will find your answers here. What I'm getting at is that this is just not for everyone. Some will enjoy it despite it's flaws, some will write smart-mouthed Amazon reviews as a way of expressing their displeasure. To each his own.
Different from movie-SPOILERS.......2006-10-29
This is better than the movie because it does not establish that the kid is Superman's son, it is Lois' husband. Unfortunately, this forces Lois to be the killer of her brute assailant using leverage. This unabridged version gives all the characters back story, even the ones you already know all of their back story. It retreads the same ground for those just starting to follow this franchise, so there, it drags. It gives Luthor proper due. It's revealed he was the one who baited Superman to go in search of Krypton where he was supposed to die. Good audio, great for long car trips.
Superman redeems himself once again.......2006-10-16
When I heard about a new Superman film, I just hoped that it was able do better than Superman 3 and 4. To tell the truth, I've never seen the movie, but wanted to. Wolfman's writing was gripping and the character depth he put in gave more to the story. This novelization adds to the legendary Superman mythos.
This is a must-have for film novelizations readers and Superman fans
PARTY ON, DUDES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bonus scenes & differing plot points from the film make for compelling reading.......2006-08-29
Marv Wolfman writes fast-paced, involving comic-book stories, so I expected his paperback adaptation of the new Superman film to be solid and enjoyable. And it generally turned out to be so. Here are a few notable aspects of this fast, entertaining read:
The sequence depicting Superman exploring the remains of Krypton, excised from the film, is here in all its glory, and it's a nicely realized bit. With luck, we'll eventually get to see it in a future extended cut of the film.
A little awkward are the flashback scenes fleshing out Superman's parents' life on Krypton in the days before they rocketed their son to Earth. We see Lara negotiating her salary to work as an assistant to Jorel (before she fell in love with him), and, later, her painting and decorating baby Kal-El's bedroom. Those scenes were a little too mundane and Earthlike to me, not like a strange alien culture at all. And how in the world do you paint a bedroom made of crystal, anyway? While most of Mr. Wolfman's added background scenes were fine, these and a few others were a little off.
The novel adds a very interesting plot point showing clearly that it was Lex Luthor who tricked Superman into going on that five-year jaunt to explore the remains of Krypton. As described in the novelization, it was Earth's scientists who discovered the remains of Krypton, but it was Luthor who planted false information in the press that there was a chance that some life still existed on the planet's burned out remains. It was Luthor's false information that made Superman have to see for himself what was out there across the galaxy. That makes the tragedy of Superman losing Lois to Richard even more, well... tragic, as Superman leaving Earth for all that time was essentially needless. I don't know whether this plot point was originally slated for inclusion in the movie or whether it was a Wolfman addition to the novel, but I thought it was terrific and effective.
As pointed out by others, the movie's big revelation about Lois' son Jason is not in the novel, making me think it was a last-minute addition to the movie story and there wasn't time to add it to the novelization. Otherwise, it's kind of cheesy that the information was held back from book buyers. This plot difference makes the novel even more tragic than the movie, as the novel's story depicts a Lex Luthor who tricks Superman into leaving Lois Lane, who eventually goes off and has a child with someone else. In the movie, Superman will, at the very least, always share the "Jason" connection with Lois.
The rest of the novelization follows the movie pretty closely, with some odd exceptions (I'm thinking here of Jimmy Olsen's heavy drinking and public drunkenness in the book-- I'm not kidding!). In the end, though, those who enjoy reading the occasional movie novelization either before or after seeing the film in question will likely find favor with this pleasantly engaging book.
