Book Description

An urgent and searing exposé of the "peace process" by a prominent Israeli thinker.

The Road Map to Nowhere is a devastating and timely book, essential to understanding the current state of the Israel/Palestine crisis and the propaganda that infects its coverage. Based on analysis of information in the mainstream Israeli media, it argues that the current road map has brought no real progress and that, under cover of diplomatic successes, Israel is using the road map to strengthen its grip on the remaining occupied territories. Exploring the Gaza pullout of 2005, the West Bank wall and the collapse of Israeli democracy, Reinhart examines the gap between myth—the Israeli leadership's public affairs achievement that has led the West to believe that a road map is in fact being implemented—and bitter reality. Not only has nothing fundamentally changed, she argues, but the Palestinians continue to lose more of their land and are pushed into smaller and smaller enclaves, surrounded by the new wall constructed by Sharon.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant study showing how to achieve peace between Israel and the Palestinians.......2007-06-14

Tanya Reinhart was a professor of philosophy at Tel Aviv University until her recent untimely death. This book examines the last four years of Israel's 40-year illegal occupation of Palestine. She shows how, under the pretence of ending its occupation, the Israeli state has reimposed military control of the occupied territories.

Gaza and the West Bank are a system of prisons, sealed enclaves. The Israeli state controls all movements of goods, services and people. It plans to retain control of these enclaves, from the outside, retaining the army's `freedom of action'.

This is in defiance of the two-thirds of the Israeli people who have consistently backed ending the occupation. 100,000-strong demonstrations have demanded, "Leave the Territories - Save the Country."

Reinhart describes the Palestinians' struggle against the illegal Separation Wall, which the Israeli state wants to be its permanent, unilaterally-decided border. The Wall annexes 40% of the West Bank. If completed, it would rob 400,000 Palestinians of their land and livelihoods.

On 25 June 2003, Palestinian organisations, including Hamas, announced that they would cease fire for three months. The Israeli and US governments immediately responded by rejecting the ceasefire and demanding the `dismantling' of Hamas and other organisations; the Israeli army killed two Palestinians, including a woman. After six weeks' ceasefire, the Israeli state resumed its policy of assassinations, killing 14 Hamas leaders in the first half of August 2003. The EU helped by placing Hamas' political leadership on its list of terrorist organisations.

In February 2004, Sharon unveiled his disengagement plan, which was a feint to cover building the Wall. In September 2005, the British Presidency of the EU demanded that the Palestinian Authority rein in the militants, while allowing Israel full freedom of action, saying, "The Presidency recognises Israel's right to act in self-defence." This is the formula that the USA usually employs to back the Israeli state's assassinations policy and aggressions.

In January 2006, Hamas won the elections. Israel, the EU and the USA at once demanded that it recognise Israel, accept all existing agreements and renounce violence. They did not make similar demands of Israel, yet Israel does not recognise Palestine, respect existing agreements or renounce violence.

There is a road to peace, a simple, unilateral solution available to Israel - end the occupation.

5 out of 5 stars Reinhart's Must Read: a Reality Check for US media.......2007-05-18

Reinhart compares and contrasts what we read in the media with the reality on the ground. It is a stunning indictment of western -- and particularly American -- media, as well as an indictment of those who are relentlessly pursuing a genocidal treatment of those whose deeds they covet.

1 out of 5 stars Israel/Palestine in black & white.......2007-03-29

A "must read" book for those interested in an analysis of a complex situation rendered in black & white by a colorblind Ms. Reinhart. The book will give you many reasons to hate Israelis/Jews. If you prefer to learn about the conflict, you may want to read Tom Segev's and Raja Shehadeh's books instead.

5 out of 5 stars The truth about the "peace process".......2007-02-22

Tanya Reinhart's latest book is a worthy successor to her Israel/Palestine: How to end the War of 1948. This is must reading for Americans, especially for those who do not speak or read Hebrew. Prof. Reinhart's searing analysis of Israeli media reveals the full extent of Israel's failure to comply with even the most basic requirements of the "Roadmap", Further, her revelations will be news to anyone who relies on information from the US press, though they are not surprising to those who have witnessed the daily tragedy that is enacted under Israel's Occupation of Palestine. While her analysis is unflinching and therefore not very optimistic, she ends her book on a note of hope. The basis for this hope is the unwavering commitment to reconciliation by some in the Israeli Peace Movement and the dedicated steadfastness of Palestinian communities like Bil'in , who have resisted the Wall and the confiscation of their lands.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on Israel-Palestine current situation.......2007-01-04

Tanya Reinhart's former book: Israel/Palestine - How to End the !948 War, was the best account and analysis of the Oslo Years and the Second Intiphada. The new book, The Road Map to Nowhere, covers the Years 2002-2006, and contributes as no other book, in information, analysis and assesment of the current situation.

Book Description

In the tradition of John McPhee and Kathleen Norris, a wry, moving memoir about a family farm, a father, and a daughter, and why it's so hard to go home again

Debra Marquart grew up on a family farm in rural North Dakota-on land her family had worked for generations. From the earliest age she knew she wanted out; surely life had more to offer than this unyielding daily grind, she thought. But she was never able to abandon it completely.

In this distinctive, beautifully written memoir, she chronicles this process of flight and return-not only from and to a particular landscape, but to respect and admiration for her father. Complex, lyrical, utterly unsentimental, often funny, Marquart's singular voice offers a deeply intelligent rumination on the meaning of native ground, on freedom and security, and on the forging of identity. It brings to mind the very best of those who have written about the natural world and a sense of place-John McPhee, Wallace Stegner, and Kathleen Norris among them.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Searing and funny memoir of coming of age in North Dakota........2007-05-31

Funny and bittersweet, this memoir captures the difficult relations between children and parents and will resonate with many American young women who took a path their parents didn't anticipate and struggle for recognition both at home and in the equally tough wider world of adulthood. Debra Marquart's a fine, fine writer--one to watch.

5 out of 5 stars This book touched my heart!.......2007-01-10

Wow! Debra Marquart very accurately portrayed the essence of growing up "wild" in North Dakota in the 70's. She touched my heart and validated my experiences and memories of that time, too. I want more, more, more!

5 out of 5 stars The farmers daughter.......2007-01-08

Is the name of a dress shop in our town. There are somethings that I know little about so I read this book. I did not learn much. Dakota weather is changing even if we don't realize it. Marquart must want to have her book read and I wanted to read it. I spose I always wanted to be blond and fresh faced from a square state but somehow this book did not reveal much Dakota truth for me. I did grow up wild and whoever chose that title might have been trying a little to hard to captivate readers.

5 out of 5 stars Farm Girl Agrees: This Book is AMAZING!.......2006-12-08

As someone who grew up in the middle of nowhere I can attest to the fact that Debra Marquart's writing is spot on. She describes a very specific subculture of the U.S. (i.e., the upper Midwest) with humor, grace and uncanny truth. She gives voice to a kind of life that is rarely spoken of by those who have endured it. Her insights made me alternately crumple on the floor in tears and laugh out loud shouting "Yes!" Simply put, she gets it right. To top that, she's done her research, too; she mixes lots of interesting background information with excellent storytelling. I am giving this to all my exiled Midwestern friends for Christmas!

5 out of 5 stars Dazzling Memoir.......2006-11-10

This is the most engaging book I've read in several years. Written with all the power that could be expected of an Iowa Writers Program Professor, it tells it's own story while exposing the desperate truths of all who've violently wrenched themselves out of home ground to find a life that fit. Blunt, funny, ironic and wry, its bravely openhearted look at a younger self made me look clearly at my own 20-year-old self, that I've disowned for over 35 years, and invite her back in.

4 out of 5 stars Travel Writers Seek Personal Solitude in 55 Diverse Locales Stunningly Photographed.......2007-04-30

As part of their eclectic series of coffee table books, Lonely Planet has produced a fascinating collection of essays and world-class photos strung around the theme of personal solitude and exploration. Fifty-five locales are covered by thirty-eight travel writers, most of whom succeed in evoking a sense of adventure that remarkably remains possible despite the intervention of technology and the all-encompassing Web. Most of the contributions fit the traditional image of isolated locales and exotic cultures, but some feel far more within reach, for example, Janet Brunckhorst's amusing dissection of Las Vegas and Andrew Dean Nystrom's account of the remote Thorofare region in Yellowstone National Park. The common thread among these accounts is that such adventures can take many forms and not necessarily require a backpack and a passport.

There are a few accounts that bring fresh twists to familiar landmarks such as Daniel Robinson's remembrance of visiting Angkor Wat in 1989 when the civil war was raging between the Phnom Penh government and the genocidal Khmer Rouge. Or there is Gregor Clark's nighttime exploration of Machu Picchu when the ruins took on a ghost-like pall. Colorful stories abound in places far less famous such as Lasseter's Cave in the middle of the Australian outback and the Wakhan Corridor in Afghanistan. We are given descriptions of places as far-flung as Babuskina in the outer reaches of Siberia, the depths of the Mariana Trench in the Pacific, and the harsh volcanic landscape of El Hierro, the most remote of the Canary Islands.

All the continents are covered, and even the moon is included at the end in a semi-tongue-in-cheek manner. The book ends with a reference guide for each location, giving navigational information, specifically how one would get about; its geography and geology; its history with man; its proximity to civilization; the must-haves before embarking on a trip there; and what works of art the area has inspired. If not quite in the same league as The Travel Book: A Journey Through Every Country in the World or The Cities Book: A Journey Through The Best Cities In The World for sheer breadth, this book will appeal to those with a particularly incessant and pioneering wanderlust.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and informative........2007-02-03

You find yourself looking at this book and not being able to put it down. It offers unique views and perspectives on the world we live in. Typical of the Lonely Planet series, it is well done. Frankly, this book should be left on the coffee table for visiting friends that you truly do want to entertain with an interesting read.

    Book Description

The second installment in the acclaimed Star Wolf trilogy, this tale pits the captain of the limping Star Wolf space vessel against an “imp,” a parasitic biocomputer that is creating havoc and pirating vital information from its position inside the ship. As the imp gathers information to aid the impending attack of the enemy Morthan fleet, Captain Korie struggles with both the internal problems caused by the imp, and the threat of an oncoming Morthan attack. Classics of military science fiction, the Star Wolf trilogy combines fast-paced action with powerful studies of the military character.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Miserable Sequel.......2004-02-28

AFter the VOYAGE OF THE STARWOLF, I expected the crew to come back to base, get refitted and go after the bad guys. Instead, they remain stuck at Star Dock, savenging their ship to others and playing cat and mouse with a Morthan Imp.

One of the premises of the book is that the humans have superior technology to the Morthan wannabes, but if one Morthan can take down a complete starship, then why do you need all these power warships. All you would need are stealthy transports to get your monsters close.

I realize that any Sequel needs a certain amount of repitition to link to a previous book, but it seemed like a good quarter of the books was the same thing said slightly different.

    On whole an unsatisfying read.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic speculation on war in space.......2003-08-27

Although this book is a continuation of of another novel (The voyage of the starwolf), it easy to grasp the events that occurred in the first novel without reading it. the events take place onboard a star faring destroyer which is subjected to sabotage by the enemy, and how the crew deal with it. Although this does not seem exciting, but the speculation of the author on how a deep space faring ship would probably be built is appealing to SF fans who insist on finding new and original ideas in every novel they read

4 out of 5 stars The STAR WOLF series defies the limitations of its genre........1998-01-06

"The Middle of Nowhere" accomplishes what few science fiction novels attempt, to explore the aftermath of the "great battle" and its lasting effects on survivors. The starship LS-1187 has limped back to starbase after surviving a battle which destroyed the entire armada to which it had been assigned. The crew, exhausted and elated by their survival against all odds, is treated to the coldest of receptions, while doubt and suspicion hang over the actions and dispositions of their ship. The author gives the reader an intimate view of his character's motivations and emotions, something often lacking in the genre. Add to this a more scientific rendering of space warfare (rather than the romanticised STAR WARS variety.) "The Middle of Nowhere" is engrossing and sometimes enlightening, always entertaining. You needn't have read the other books in the series "Voyage of the Star Wolf" and "Star Hunt" to enjoy this book... but when you are finished with "Middle of Nowhere" you will find yourself seeking them out!

    Book Description

The latest title in the world-spanning Crossroads series. Popular Dragonlance author Paul B. Thompson pens the latest novel that explores an area of the setting that has been mentioned but not previously described in detail to readers.

The peace of a rural village is shattered by the sudden appearance of a band of renegade warriors seeking slaves. The farmers of Nowhere have no hope unless they can raise a company of champions to defend them, but the motley group of saviors who take up their cause--a shipwrecked sailor, a minotaur poet, a kender treasure hunter, a shamed half-ogre, a disgraced foot soldier, and an eccentric sorcerer--seem nearly as dangerous as the slavemasters.

4 out of 5 stars old story done once again just in DL world.......2003-12-08

This was a sotry you have heard before. If you saw the movie the Seven Samuri or the Magnificent Seven (western version of the orginal) then you have basically read this book. I am a huge dragonlance fan and over all say the book was good. Just that from the beginning of chapter one I knew what I was reading. The parellels are all there in this book. The town gets raided by bandits, they are poor farmers, speak to old wise man of town who says hire warriors. I have seen both versions of the movies and this is the same plot once again. But over all was a good book and even if you know the stry line you should read it. I hope you enjoy it. Also to plug the movies here if you like westerns check out the Magnificent Seven. Great cast and excellent movie.

4 out of 5 stars A Bunch of Farmers vs. a Horde of Bandits.......2003-08-26

At some places I've heard that this book should have been based upon something called "The Seven Samurai," but I simple don't know anything about that. So this review is written entirely from the perspective of one reading this plotline for the first time, which means that there's no comparisons to this so called "Samurai" book or whatever it is.

This novel takes its beginning in a small village only consisting of farmers. Bandits looking for slaves for a mining facility comes by, and takes several farmers captive, promising that they will return for more farmers.

One of the captives is Laila, a young woman, which a man in the village called Malek is deeply in love with. He starts out from the village with some of his farmer friends, looking for champions to help the them defend their small village, and rescue their lost ones.

On their travel, they come across the city of mercenary city of Robann, where they gather quite a band of champions. Of those, there is a minotaur poet, a drunken soldier, a kender (of course), an elf hunted by a bounty hunter (and the bounty hunter too), a half ogre, and lastly a hardboiled warrior woman from Saifhum. They all agree to help the farmers protect their village. But for no reward at all! But in the end, they will all be rewarded...

The rest of the book goes by with the seven defenders staving off atacking bandits, who have set up camp around the village. What they do, is making barricades, digging threnches, and other stuff, to make it difficult for the bandit army...

One of the best things about this book, is that it is filled with action. I'm sure that this is one of the Dragonlance books with the most action in it. The plot isn't very complicated, and there isn't either any real plot twists in the story after my opinion. This is maybe one of the flaws about the book, but its still the action that drives the plot forward. And the action is indeed well-written.

In fact, the action and the way the defenders defend the village, is very creative thought out, and it never gets boring. There always happens something new. But some might find it a bit uninteresting to some point, but I still liked it much. And I have to say it...Ezu was a really cool kind of trickster!

Something that I didn't quite catch though, was how the mountain range with the mining facility could lie east, if Robann was to the west. It didn't really fit with my FIFTH AGE map. But maybe its just me?

One of the last great aspects of the book is the ending, which I found very touching. So all in all a worthwile DL book, which all DL fans will be satisfied with.

A brutal attack that leaves a young woman paralyzed is horrifying enough, but when it happens to one of Seattle police lieutenant Lou Boldt's own officers, and all the suspects wear the same uniform as the victim, it's much worse. The SPD has been struck by a not-very-mysterious case of the "blue flu," a labor dispute that's turned cop against cop. Frustrated by the work slowdown in the department, Boldt is working almost on his own, except for forensic psychologist Daphne Matthews and detective John LaMoia, familiar characters in Pearson's popular series (The Pied Piper, The First Victim). Despite not-so-veiled warnings from some of his colleagues, Lou is determined to unmask Maria Sanchez's attacker, even if it turns out to be a fellow cop. And if that's not enough, the piano-playing lieutenant with a devoted wife--and a lingering yen for his coworker Daphne--has to deal with a crime wave that's increasing every day as the blue flu fells more of the force.

Investigating a string of robberies, Lou and Daphne follow the evidence to a telemarketing operation in a Colorado prison and question an inmate who may have used inside information to set up the robberies for his brother in Seattle to carry out. When the inmate dies, his brother goes after Lou, who isn't sure who to blame when violence hits too close to home--the brother or the striking policemen. Middle of Nowhere isn't Pearson's best outing: the plot is thinner than usual and the pacing somewhat slower, although the detailed explanation of how to catch a criminal using new telecommunications technology is fascinating. Still, Lou Boldt is an always interesting character whose inner conflicts are well drawn and whose essential decency makes up for a lot. His understated romance with Daphne deepens in every new adventure; the real mystery is what's going to happen to the two of them. --Jane Adams

But when a string of robberies and the brutal near-murder of a female cop descend on the city, the pressure of being a nearly one-man operation threatens Boldt's psyche and his marriage. With the help of police psychologist Daphne Matthews and Sergeant John LaMoia, Boldt is able to make slow progress cracking the case, and their work leads them to a Denver convict and his brother, a hardened criminal. Boldt and Daphne come to realize that the robberies, assaults, and strike are somehow connected—and that his life is now in very real danger. Filled with the fast-paced, spiraling action that makes Pearson's novels “irrestistible” (LA Times Book Review) works of suspense that “grip the imagination” (People).

    2 out of 5 stars Not convincing.......2006-04-03

A majority of Seattle's police force is on an unofficial strike when a string of violent burglaries and a brutal attack on a female cop happen. Detective Lou Boldt assumes that there is a common link and starts to investigate. But soon there are hints that cops might be involved as well...

Even if the book features good solid police work the story development is pretty slow. Furthermore the whole concept/story was never really able to grab my full attention.

It says a lot about this book that the story is not as interesting or gripping as the (love) tension between Boldt and psychologist Daphne Matthews.

On top of that the pure idea or remote possibility of cops bashing other cop's brains in because they are strike breakers was too far-fetched for me. (Strike breaker or not - they still are all COPS!)

When Boldt has its first solid suspect it results in a very long chase after the potential killer - almost in real time. With about a full quarter of the book this chase is way too long! It might have been great in a movie but started to bore me while reading.

In the end the final conclusion did neither come as a real surprise nor was it very convincing.

This sure is not one of Pearson's better books. And it is not a book I would recommend to get to know his writing skills! Pearson can do a lot better. You can read this story but you do not miss anything if you don't...

5 out of 5 stars "Hurry, you won;t find me there!".......2005-02-12

I don't write reviews well. I don't care for endless superlatives that go on and on about "not much".
This is the first Ridley Pearson book I've read. I buy all my novels in paperback and from garage sales and from Half-Price Books. Hard backed novels are a waste of space and time.
So to rate Pearson's style, I'll do it this way: Comparative styles. If John Sanford's "Prey" novels are each a "10", then; 1/Tami Hoag's novels are a "10" and
    2/ Clive Cussler's novels are a "10".
3/ Pearson comes in at a "9.4" while Stephen King is way behind at 4.7.
Do I like Ridley Pearson's characters?. Very Much.
Do I like his imagery. Again, very much.

Not that it ever will happen but I'd like to see some books based on investigations in the following locales:

    Brownsville/Mc Allen, Texas
    Shreveport/Bossier City, Louisana
    Albany/Upstate New York
San Juan County (the all-Island County) in Washington State
The New Mexico Desert in the summer
    Reno, Nevada
    Greenville/Columbia, South Carolina
Anywhere in Maryland, Delaware or New Jersey

    4 out of 5 stars Welcome back!.......2005-02-09

I was about to give up this series after reading "The Last Victim." I'm certainly glad I didn't. "Middle Of Nowhere" is just as good (if not better) as the earlier Lou Bolt novels. Plenty of action and twists. Can't wait now to read the next book in the series. For those of you new to the Lou Bolt series, I would recommend reading them in order and skipping "The Last Victim."

5 out of 5 stars Another Boldt series.......2003-09-23

I enjoyed all Lou Boldt books including this one with Boldt's same supporting characters who are enjoyable to read. "Blu Flu" situation is unusual in normal life which is something different in the story that makes it interesting to read that we don't see very often in other novels. I'm looking forward to read next series in "The Art of Deception" which I'm reading now.

2 out of 5 stars Not For Me.......2002-10-24

When Officer Maria Sanchez is brutally attacked outside her home and left paralyzed Lieutenant Lou Bolt is assigned to investigate her case. Lieutenant Bolt, normally a homicide detective, is now put on this burglary case due to the "Blue Flu" an unofficial strike of the Seattle PD leaving all departments very short handed. Now Bolt must try to figure out if Sanchez's attack was the unfortunate result of one of a string of burglaries or if there is more to this "Blue Flu" than meets the eye.

As I said in my introduction this novel was just simply not for me. It's gotten great reviews, so for police drama lovers you may really enjoy this book. However, even though Pearson did try to explain all of the police terminology, I found it to be a little too technical for my taste. I also found `MIDDLE OF NOWHERE' to be a little slow at times and I found myself drifting off and missing entire scenes. So really it just comes down to `MIDDLE OF NOWHERE' is not my type of book.

Hey Hanson fans! I'm telling you now, this is an awesome songbook. It's got all the tab + chords for Middle of Nowhere, and there's a poster in the front of the book as well. The tab + chords are awesome... if you're sick of dealing with poorly-tabbed internet stuff, buy this. It's perfectly done! :) Buy it- it's worth it!!

      Book Description

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is more than a local or regional dispute. Its ongoing and escalating nature increases the risk that the violence will spill over its present borders and contribute to both extremism and terrorism. While the Intifada from 1987 to 1993 was largely a popular uprising and a political struggle, the recent clash is a war with a steady escalation between conventional and unconventional forces. It is in the interest of all major powers, the international community, and the United Nations to press both sides to accept a realistic peace plan. Noted Middle East expert Anthony Cordesman details this continuing struggle by explaining the issues at stake for each side; the various combatants (both directly and indirectly engaged); as well as the course of the war in its various incarnations. The situation on the ground is complex and the quest for peace is ever more uncertain. If the Intifada was a struggle for recognition that a peace had to be reached that was just for both sides, the Israeli-Palestinian War has polarized both sides away from peace, convincing them of the justice of their own cause and tactics and the fundamental injustice of the other side's tactics and goals. Each side has used human rights, international law, and civilian casualties as political weapons. The history of a near century of conflict is used to justify war rather than a search for peace.

      5 out of 5 stars A true masterpiece........2000-10-23

In The Middle Of Nowhere is a true masterpiece of 20th century literature. Howe belongs in the same lineup as Hemmingway, Fitzgerald and Morris. This novel, which charts the lives of four people, whose paths intersect, bring new definition to the contemporary novel. What does it really mean, to be "In The Middle Of Nowhere."
