TO DIE WELL: YOUR RIGHT TO COMFORT, CALM, AND CHOICE IN THE LAST DAYS OF LIFE comes from a leader in the right-to-die movement, and a Harvard Medical School psychiatrist who offer insights on turning points in a dying patient's life: one when no reasonable expectation of a cure is possible, the second involving hastening death - the subject of this book. TO DIE WELL focuses on patient rights, physician involvement, and how to stay in control of advance directives. It promises to be an essential addition not just for medical libraries, but for general-interest collections.

At last! Two doctors have written a right-to-die book with the patients' interests first. Very readable by the lay person, bundles of good advice on how a patient's best interests should be protected, and straightforward reporting on euthanasia and assisted suicide. Recommend for instant reading, and filing away for future problems. -- Derek Humphry ('Final Exit')

Book Description

In an exciting new series that critics have called "John Grisham meets Robert Ludlum," criminal defense lawyer Jack Swyteck faces his biggest challenge yet.Tatum Knight is a former contract killer. Ruthless. Conniving. And he's Jack's newest client. He's been named in the will of a gorgeous young woman who was shot dead in her Mercedes on a Miami street.

Sally Fenning was worth forty-eight million dollars when she died. Money had never made her happy, so she left it all to her enemies -- left it for them to fight over, that is. No one gets a penny until all but one of the heirs are dead. It's survival of the greediest.

The lawyers gear up for a bitter legal battle, but Jack braces himself for much worse. As the heirs begin to fall, Jack is in a race against time to discover if Tatum -- or someone even more frightening -- is the odds-on favorite to be the last to die.

5 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down........2006-11-10

I thought the premise was crazy. Who would believe this could even happen - who would contract to have themselves killed - and then leave $46 million to the contracted killer? But who was the 'real' killer? I kept changing my guesses all the way through the book and was wrong to the end.

4 out of 5 stars This is a good and blazing quick read........2006-10-15

I won't summarize the book here, but I'll just say that this Grippando book is a really good one and is worthy of you reading. The best part about this book was that the whole way through I was guessing who the villian was, and every one of my guess turned out wrong. While I was trying to imagine who the villian would be, at the same time I was hoping that I would be wrong so the ending would be a surprise, and it turned out that everyone I thought was guilty wasn't; everyone I thought was innocent had some sore of involvement; or some combination of the two. This is a blazing fast read that I finished in a day and half, and I wasn't even intending to read that much. Definitely pick this book up.

Also, it's pretty funny too. There were about a dozen lines in the book that actually had me laughing out loud, and you don't usually find that in a suspense/thriller like this one. I highly recommend this book to you.

5 out of 5 stars The most exciting book I ever read!.......2005-03-01

The book The Last to Die by James Grippando was one of the best books I have ever read. Now normally I read short books that are easy to get through, but this book was different. I read this book in three days and I was sad when it ended. This book had me hanging on the egde of my seat! It is an exciting novel for both teens and adults. I think this book should be read by all who like exciting books!

4 out of 5 stars Would read it again!.......2004-11-23

Although a little gorey and graphic, this book kept my nose stuck between the pages.
The concept behind the storyline is brilliant and original.
The characters are very well defined, and their stories unfold seamlessly.
Strongly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Last to die gets the dough!.......2004-09-14

This is my 3rd Grippando book and one of the best whodonits that I have read in a while

Imagine this, Sally Fenning is a beautiful, young woman who has decided to end her life. Her life has been tragic since her young daughter was murdered and she was stabbed by a stalker who the police failed to catch and she feels she has nothing to gain. She asks a contract killer to do the deed. He refuses, she ends up dead anyway and she names him in her will. Along with Tatum, the contract killer, Sally also adds her ex-husband, the divorce lawyer, the DA that covered the investigation, a reporter who was planning on writing a book based on Sally's tragedy and finally a stranger name Alan Sirap to the list of beneficiaries. The amount of the inheritance is $46 million and only the last person living will collect the "jackpot".

This is where the fun starts. Jack Swyteck, best friend of the contract killer's brother is hired to defend Tatum and try to secure the inheritance for his client. Jack is too much of a good guy not to be bothered by the fact that this beautiful mysterious women decides to include the person that she hired to kill her, in her will.

As you coast along the book, you will start to understand the reason why each person was named in the will and you will also have fun trying to figure out who is killing each of the beneficiaries and who is Alan Sirap?

Grippando keeps me entertained and also on the edge of my seat, trying to answer all the questions before the book ended.

He just seems to get better with each book that I read. One of my fav.

4 out of 5 stars Okay Book.......2006-09-25

The econd in a series of books located in Cherokee, TN was okay. It was not quite as good as the first. Caleb and Jazzy's tale started off with likable but rather combustible characters in an interesting situation. I was somewhat disappointed with Caleb at the end. He goes off, leaving the woman he loves, when she is in considerable danger. Even though he swore to stay with her, he did not. He has not been honest with her. It made her very angry as she should have been. He leavces with his rich grandfather instead of staying and protecting her. Jazzy should consider selling out and seeing something of the rest of the world. This particular part of it has not been particularly good for her. The end of the book just sort of petered out with Jazzy appearing to lose some of her confidence in herself. I guess the author is going to tie things up in the final book, but she has to make us want to go there. Right now, I am not sure I do.

3 out of 5 stars Good sequel to Fifth Victim.......2006-03-10

Another killer is on the loose in Cherokee Pointe, Tennessee. Town bad boy Jamie Upton is found brutally murdered, and all hands are pointing to his former lover, Jazzy Talbot.

Jazzy and Jamie's lives have been intertwined since they were teens, and their illicit romance resulted in a teen pregnancy. Finding herself dumped, since Jamie would face disinheritance, Jazzy has always been Jamie's fall back gal when he is in town.

With new man Caleb McCord suddenly playing an important role in her life, she works to exonerate herself from accusation. When another murder occurs, Jazzy has an alibi - Caleb - but when she finds out the secret of his past, will she be able to continue the relationship? Further complicating her life is the emergence of a woman bearing a striking resemblance to her - one that wants nothing to do with her.

But there is a host of possible suspects including Jamie's latest fiance, her sister, any one of his other conquests in town, and Jazzy's "twin". Once again, psychic Genny steps in to help the police solve the mystery. What would the sheriff do without her?

3 out of 5 stars Not quite what I was expecting..........2004-08-23

I didn't realize until I'd finished the book that it was a part of a series. With that in mind, I had real trouble connecting to any of the characters. And I found the violence a little more graphic than I was expecting from a suspenseful romance. The murderer's calling card is to cut off a man's genitalia and stuff it in their mouths. Yuk!

Jazzy Talbot, owner of Cherokee Point, Tennessee's diner and bar, has spent her life longing for ladies man and member of the upper crest, Jamie Upton. Though they were high school sweethearts and he impregnated her at sixteen, he refused to marry her because he would lose his inheritance. But that hasn't kept him from hound-dogging her door even while he's engaged to be married to another woman. Jazzy's reputation as a loose woman and the fact that she'd publicly threatened Jamie's life makes her the prime suspect when Jamie's dead body is found.

Caleb McCord is hiding from his past while living just outside his future. He's the only one aware that he is the lost Upton grandson and Jamie Upton's cousin. He works as a bouncer in Jazzy's club and finds himself drawn to her more and more everyday, but she can't seem to see him past Jamie's larger than life presence. When Jamie is murdered, Caleb is one of the only people who believe Jazzy's innocence. Struggling to keep her safe while fighting his own inner demons and his insecurities about becoming part of the Upton family, Caleb learns what it means to be part of a small town and the sacrifices one must make in the name of love.

With enough characters milling about to keep you guessing just `who done it', Beverly Barton weaves a good mystery. Though most of the characters reach no real resolution by the end of the book, and two serial killers coming to one small town in less than three months is highly unlikely, "The Last to Die" was still an interesting read. I'm definitely going to have to go back and read the first book "The Fifth Victim", and we'll all just have to wait to see what happens next.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent sequel!.......2004-02-14

I think I like this one even better than The Fifth Victim. While Jamie was a complete jerk, he didn't deserve to die like that! Jazzy & Caleb's relationship was great and I enjoyed catching up on Genny & Dallas. I can't wait for the third and final book of the trilogy!

The only thing I'm not looking forward to is the return of Reve. What a shallow, arogant creature she is! She believes she's better than everyone else who wasn't raised in money! Which is ironic considering she wasn't born into privilege but found in a dumpster! She was a complete snob, insulting, bigoted and downright cruel and those were her best qualities! I hate to see her involved with Jacob (the neanderthal savage, as she thinks of him) since he deserves so much better! But regardless I'm still looking forward to seeing more of Jazzy and the rest of the folks in Cherokee Pointe!

4 out of 5 stars You gotta wait and see!.......2004-02-05

I trully enjoy Beverly Barton's books and this was no exception but I was a little disappointed with the ending because in my opinion there was none--it's actually a cliffhanger type ending with a set up for the third and final book ( although we do get the answer to who killed jaime and why). I guess I wanted all the questions answered and the hero and his lady to ride off into the sunset. Never the less it was a excellent book and I can not wait to buy the third and final book in this saga!

While American military forces seek to defeat an enemy that has no nation and American citizens ponder a future inextricably linked to the threat of terrorism, legendary writer Studs Terkel steps forward with a remarkable volume of oral histories that sheds new light on fighting for a just cause in uncertain times. As the title of Hope Dies Last suggests, Terkel's interviews all deal with the notion of finding hope in difficult times and holding on to that hope (of a better job, a better life, justice, peace) despite often overwhelming odds. Terkel draws his subjects from an incredibly broad range of backgrounds: pardoned Illinois death row inmate Leroy Orange discusses the events of his life, 94-year-old famed economist John Kenneth Galbraith talks about Enron, undocumented Guatemalans tell of trying to merely survive in modern America. While each testimonial is compelling in its own way, they combine to form a mosaic of human tenacity. Often, as in the case of 1960s civil rights activists, the subjects' ideas are accepted in the long run, for others, including a resident of Chicago's Cabrini Green housing project, the struggle is only just beginning. Terkel, 91 years old at the time of this book's publication, draws from a wealth of human experience but is spry enough to take on new causes and skillfully profile youthful activists with emerging causes. And Hope Dies Last is still a Studs Terkel book, full of the Pulitzer Prize-winning author's brand of blue-collar, rabble-rousing, union-card-waving brand of broad shouldered Chicago liberalism that makes the current wave of political writers seem a bit green and petty by comparison. For all of their success in selling books that accuse one another of being liars and idiots, those writers would do well to get out and meet even a few of the people that Studs Terkel has been talking to for years. --John Moe

    Book Description

The renowned oral historian turns his attention to the aspirations of "the American century."

I feel there's gonna be a change, but we're the ones gonna do it, not the government. With us there's a saying, "La esperenza muera ultima. Hope dies last." You can't lose hope. If you lose hope, you lose everything.—Jessie de la Cruz, retired farm worker

Studs Terkel's marvelous oral histories have hitherto dealt with specifics, as he puts it "the visceral stuff — the job, race, age and death." While Terkel's chosen theme here, the incandescence of hope, might at first appear elusive, it is anything but abstract. For Terkel, hope is born of activism, commitment, and the steely determination to resist.

The spirit of activism has ebbed and flooded through Terkel's venerable life. In the Great Depression of the 1930s he recalls a man swinging from a chandelier at the Astor Hotel shouting for "Social Security!" In the 1960s it was African Americans and students who advocated for equal rights and an end to maladventure overseas. And now, in a new century, young and old are joining forces on the streets to say no to war. The spark of activism is igniting the precious idea of a better world once again.

The interviews in Hope Dies Last constitute an alternative history of the "American century," forming a legacy of the indefatigable spirit that Studs has always embodied, and an inheritance for those who, by taking a stand, are making concrete the dreams of today.

5 out of 5 stars Maintaining Hope in Challenging Times.......2004-11-25

HOPE DIES LAST is an oral history of various personalities collected by renowned social commentator Studs Terkel. Terkel has collected stories from just about every conceivable category of people: teachers, politicians, clergy people, business people, young people, and old people, you name it, the group is probably represented in this book. Each oral history tells the story of someone who has maintained hope in a challenging or difficult moment. The situations vary, but each is meant to help us navigate in these very trying and uncertain days after September 11, 2001.

In his introduction, Terkel says that "Hope never trickles down. It always springs up." This book will certainly help people see that hope does spring up in third world countries, in violent city streets, in classrooms, churches, and just about everywhere else. This book will be helpful for just about anyone, whether facing a challenge or not. Teachers and clergy people will find the book very helpful since so much of the work of educators and members of eth clergy is keeping faith alive.

4 out of 5 stars Hope Dies Last: Keeping the Faith in Difficult Times.......2004-04-13

Hope Dies Last: Keeping the Faith in Difficult Times by Studs Terkel, The New Press, 2003 p. 326

Studs Terkel lends understanding to what it means to be an American by letting Americans speak. His newest addition in his long and celebrated list of books offers a collection of interviews with hopeful people or "hopeholders", history chroniclers, the celebrated and the un-knows. "In the following pages are portraits of the inheritors of the legacy of those past. They range in age from nonagenarians to young ones in their twenties".

Mr. Terkel is free-thinker. He holds a flame of hope. "As we enter the new millennium, hope appears to be an American attribute that has vanished for many, no matter what their class or condition in life. The official word has never been more arrogantly imposed. Passivity, in the face of such a bold, unabashed show of power from above, appears to be the order of the day. But it ain't necessarily so." His interviewer's selection reflects his viewpoint.

I first read his books to bone up on the art of interviewing. My horizons expanded upon reading interviews with various folks such as World War II heroines and heros, and those that had experienced death close up. Now, I read Studs Terkel books for the joy of learning about whatever he finds of interest. My burning question remain: How does he get people to open up, spill their guts, and let their hearts and human spirits shine through?

His introduction offers answers in his guiding voice. He is someone that's lived a free man's life, met amazing people, done amazing things, stood up for what he believed was right, and he is still going strong. His "voice" is that of a "regular guy". He's the kind of individual that has wisdom, wisdom enough to guide you as well as let you decide things for yourself. That seems to help his subjects to "open up".

Those that have read previous Studs Terkel books will not be disappointed with his latest book, Hope Dies Last. Those new to Terkel...well.... Sit back and enjoy and be prepared to be motivated. "Activism need not be a profession in itself, as it is in many cases here. It can be in the writing of a letter to the editor or to your congressperson; it can be in taking part in a local action or a national one, or, for that matter, a worldwide one".

5 out of 5 stars Thank you, Mr. Terkel. A true American asset right here........2004-01-14

Studs Terkel. I apologize, I cannot continue without prefacing my review without a word or two about this great man, and I am not normally effusive in my praise.

If you wanted someone to try and model your life on, you could do far worse than to choose Studs Terkel. Anyone today could live to be 200 and not see and experience half of what this man has. He was born May 14, 1912, and at the age of 91, he is still going strong. Talk about endurance, about transcending time. My hats off to Terkel.

Anyway, to the review, as you might expect if you've read anything else by Terkel, he continues his intriguing and beguiling brand of oral history, transmitted to us through the written word. His many works have touched on many periods, and many themes, but in this book, Terkel examines hope.

More importantly, Terkel in this book views hope as marked by resistance, activism, working to change the world or make it a better place. It is easy in these times to become dismissive... in an interview Terkel said before he wrote the book, he had the feeling that the nation was as apathetic and hopeless as it hadn't been in a long time. To some extent, that rings true.

But this book isn't just a foray into a depressing land with no hopes or prospects. Some of the military personnel have rather bleak things to say about the future, but despair is the flip side of the coin to hope - to talk about one without speaking about the other would be pointless.

The book's framework is this: Terkel examines how people have perservered, lived, strived, propsered, and died throughout recent American history. Famous people. Unknown people. People from all walks of life. Teachers, social workers, and politicians share the stage with unknown alcoholics, refugees, and disease victims. The results are not uniformly happy, but that is not important - the presence of hope in the face of what you would think of as unendurable odds is the theme. Hope, and its many forms - hope for life, hope for happiness, hope for change, hope for sheer survival.

If I've made this book sound like some kind of "Chicken Soup for the Soul," let me assure you, it isn't. It isn't candy-coated, dumbed-down, or an overly cheery insult to your intelligent. It won't eradicate anyone's cynicism, but I have to think that most people would come away from reading this book feeling better about their country and its inhabitants than before they read it... coming away a little changed themselves as well. And really, what more can you ask for in a book?

I would heartily recommend this book to anyone.

Once again, I find myself trapped with a Studs Terkel book. Each book of his I read is better than the one before. This one is a wonder-I'm thinking of ordering several for gifts, one even for my Priest.
Easy reading, well organized & great topic. He is a literary treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Read the words of those walking the walk.......2003-10-19

Give yourself a treat and savor the gift Studs gave us of the words of those out there fighting the good fight. From Dennis Kucinich to Frances Moore Lappe to Kathy Kelly to John Kenneth Galbraith, the words come from the heart. They tell the stories of their families, describe their work and why they keep at it.

Roberta Lynch,"I remember back to the Harold Washington campaign. I was a lakefront coordinator. I remember these efforts to build black political power in the city. People felt like it was rolling a rock up a hill, and here comes the Harold Washington campaign, and it's like an explosion.

You get the sense that history can surprise us, always. It's those surprises that break through the deadening, stultifying consensus that gives people a sense, Yes! We can."

    5 out of 5 stars 3,153,600 Minutes of Hell.......2006-01-23

Imagine trying to survive 3,153,600 minutes of hell, with each minute seeming as if it was a year long. That's what Helina Birenbaum describes in her autobiography about surviving the holocaust, Hope is the Last to Die.
The book and its author are remarkable, as Joan Martorelli, notes in her review on Amazon.com (June 15, 2003). Going over the descriptive passion Halina writes with, Ms. Martorelli introduces ideas about how an everyday person could cope with the Holocaust and also looks back on times she visited concentration camps.
One point that Ms. Martorelli makes in this review is that her descriptions of the trauma, the joy, and the anger are so vivid and expressive that they simply draw you in and make you feel as though you are almost there with her as she goes through the manic changes of emotion. I completely agree with this. I also think (though the writer of this review doesn't contradict this) that it would be impossible to fully experience any pain Halina went through just by reading a book about the troubles, But acknowledging that brings us one step closer to comprehending.
Halina did not get a chance to grieve about a lot of the loss faced. She was not able to sit down and cry even for a minute because it would jeopardize her chances of survival. In the loss of both her dear mother and of her first love, she isn't able to say goodbye. They are both taken so suddenly and forcefully. She had to tune out her urges to mourn. If she had not done that, I believe she would have died along side the millions of other persecuted.
A book so filled with love, character, hope, and that's so easy to follow and get caught up in should not be kept of your bookshelf. Hope is the Last to Die fits that description perfectly, and I recommend this book to everyone.

    5 out of 5 stars Truely a remarkable woman.......2003-12-07

I also bought this book in Auschwitz. I read is as soon as I bought it. While touring through the concentration camps you see all the horrible things that these people had to go through. But when you read the book, you experience the whole thing again, but with more heart. You go through the steps with Halina, you cry and you can almost feel what she felt. She is a remarkable woman for not possessing hatred, instead she encourages love and wisdom. Because of Halina I have become a more understanding person.

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable book, remarkable woman.......2003-06-16

I have read many books and seen many movies about the Holocaust; have visited Auswchwitz and Dachau, but I have never felt the horror of the camps as I did while reading this book. The reader is there with Ms. Birenbaum, feeling the cold, the hunger, the constant terror and rage. It is unimaginable that this woman survived 6 years of inhuman treatment--but she did.

Because Ms. Birenbaum describes her own experiences as a Polish Jew coming of age during the Third Reich, she has much to teach us. The author expresses her emotions so simply and beautifully that the reader feels joy at her triumphs and while crying at her losses, emotional pain and humiliation. This remarkable woman, who was a child (between 9 and 15 years of age during the war), was wise, strong, resourceful and brave beyond all expectations. She watched almost all those she loved disappear. While standing in line at a "selection" at the Majdanek Camp, she turned around to talk to her beloved mother who had for years emotionally sheltered her young daughter from the inevitable (a la "Life is Beautiful"), and found her gone. She never saw her again, never said good-bye. In the camps she created new families for herself, only to loose these people, as well. Most touching was Ms. Birenbaum's first experience of falling in love and the loss of that man. And through all this, she was never able to mourn. Emotions had to be pushed deep inside because the focus had to be on survival.

On several occasions, the author expressed her need for dignity and self-respect by standing up to her captors and, unbelieveably, was not shot for her defiance. She describes her indifference to the pain of others as a way of coping with the near certainty that she would loose them, while also expressing her longing to be touched and held and by someone.

After reading this book, I think about all the little annoyances of daily living, and how meaningless they are. I wonder how many of us, in our pre-teens, could have dealt with the protracted horror of the ghetto and camps as Ms. Birenbaum did. How many of us would have had the will and fortitude to live through the experiences described in this book? Ms. Birenbaum, you were a remarkable child and are a courageous woman!

5 out of 5 stars Very, Very Moving.......2000-04-26

I have read many books about the holocaust, but this one is special to me. After having the honor of actually meeting the author and hearing her story told first-hand (twice), I felt like I had to get her book. I did, and it changed me. Reading it was an experience which was almost too difficult for me and yet, I didn't want it to end.

It is written like a story -you go through everything she goes through, you sort of relive it with her. That is why, when you finish the book, you feel like she is your best friend. I wish she was.

5 out of 5 stars The power of the soul to overcome.......1997-12-05

One of the BEST first hand accounts of the holocost and life inside Auschwitz. I bought my copy at Auschwitz and every detail from the book is superimposed with the memory of the camp as it is today. The imagery the author uses is mesmerizing. This is a truly moving story full of hardship and courage. Even through all of the trials and tribulations of life in the camp of death, the author shows us the beauty of companionship and hope. I wondered at this book. How one individual could servive those around her dying and still have the desire to live. It is through the hope and courage that she can live and it is through this book that the problems of my life seem so insignificant.

    5 out of 5 stars a truly great book.......2005-11-16

Please Don't die, was the first of many books by Lurlene McDaniel that i have purchased and read. Not only is it entertaining it helped me to get over the death of my cousin, who died of Leukemia. the individual stories of all the girls jumps out and grabs you, whether you want it or not. If you want a book that you want to read and be affected this is it.

5 out of 5 stars THIS WAS THE BEST BOOK EVER!!!.......2005-01-08

This was one of the best books I have ever read. I learned a lot from this book. It also taught me a lot of things. It taught me that nothing can ruin a girl and girl relationship (a friendship between two girls). I have learned that when a good friend comes along, don't lose them. Don't let anything get in the way of that relationship. I had to do this book for a book report and I would do it again. Although this is the only one of McDaniel's books I have read, I plan to read many more. She is an inspirational writter and I say that she is an inspiration to us all.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great book!.......2004-04-07

Lurlene McDaniel writes motivating novels about teenagers facing life-altering situations. Please Don't Die a fictional novel that is part of the One Last Wish series. The novel is written in third person, with four main characters. The themes of the novel are never giving up and never lose your hope and faith. Life is going to get tuff but as long as you have supportive friends and family you'll make it. Life wasn't made to be easy and there is always going to be someone who has more than you and always someone who has less. Enjoy what you have you were made for a reason, and everything happens for a reason even if its unknown. The one last wish series deals with an unknown person gives a gift of money with no strings attached to help someone who might be dieing. This mysterious person gives away money for a sick person to have there dreams come true in there final time. The person donating the money known as JWC doesn't want any credit for it just to know that the person who is sick will get there last wish.I personally loved the book, as a cancer survivor it gives me a lot of insight, and shows me how lucky I really am to be alive. Also life is to short and I need to enjoy every minute of it. Life may not always be easy but the bumpy roads only make you stronger. I have read many other novels by Lurlene McDaniel and I've loved them all too.
The author puts these girls threw hardship, but it shows them they aren't the only ones who are sick. They feel as if they are left on the outside looking in ad the world goes on and there not part of it. When they see other people their age sick like them they feel normal and it becomes not so awkward to make friends. This book has made me want to volunteer at a cancer camp(...)
I would definitely recommend this book! I give it a ten out of ten!

5 out of 5 stars This is a great book; one of McDaniels' best works........2003-09-13

As Katie O'Roark comes to the Jenny house as a "big sister" she becomes friends with roomates Chelsea and Amanda right away, But with Lacey it takes a while to create trust. The Jenny House is the one place they can act like "normal kids". Through the summer the girls deal with there sicknesses and overcome some of their insecurites. They learn true frienship gos beyond death in this tragic story.

1 out of 5 stars A Great Book and A View Of Reality.......2002-12-08

This is a great book that I will probably never forget. I have been reading Lurlene McDaniel books for a few months now, and this is by far the best one yet. I have loved the One Last Wish Books, and I have been dying to know who JWC was.

Katie O'Roark gets invited to Jenny House, a summer camp for sick kids. She is big sister to Amanda, a very sweet thirteen year old with lukemia who tries to make light out of everything; Chelsea, a 14 year old girl with a heart condition who's parents are way too overprotecting; and Lacey, a 16 year old with diabetes who is such a snob and no one can stand her. These girls bond very closely, and by the end of the summer, they are inseparable. Then, something happens, and one of the girls gets sick and has to go to the hospital. She is unable to fulfill her dreams.

This is a heartwarming story about friendship, and I learned that life isn't as happy as everyone as it is for me, and everyone should take life for granted. I hope this was helpful to you!!

    5 out of 5 stars A Tear Jerker.......2006-05-18

This story has to be on of the best stories in the entire One Last Wish series. It shows the hardships that teens that have Cystic Fibrosis have to endure daily. Kara Fischer, a girl with C.F., shows what she goes through every day with this disease, and how it affects her every day life. She deals with the same things we deal with and more; and it shows how determined she is to have a normal life. When she falls in love with Eric, and he finds out about her C.F., I was surprised to see what he did. This book is a heart-wrenching story that brought a tear to my eye while reading it. It is an amazing book with a great truth behind it. Showing all of the things that happen to the people suffering from the disease, in using a child for the main character, makes you relate to the character even more; whether you have the disease or not.
Lurlene McDaniel is an amazing author who does her research to make the story even greater. Knowing the facts about what is actually happening and putting it down with a plot and characters, teaches you about the disease or problem while keeping you interested. The powerful way she writes makes you stay intrigued, and makes you want to keep turning the pages to see what happens.
You want to know whether they are going to go out with someone or if they are going to get sick again. You begin to become that person and can feel what they are feeling, and can hear the voices of the other characters talking to you. You understand what is going on in their minds and what is in their hearts. Their feelings become yours; you cry when they cry, you feel the touch they feel, and you hear the words they hear. When you cry with them, you cry on both the inside and the outside as well. Your heart and eyes fill with tears and you just can't help but cry from both parts of you. You are them.

A Time to Die is a fiction story based on a young lady who has cystic fibrosis. Everyday she goes through therapy to help her breathe. She meets a boy named Vince, who also has cystic fibrosis. Vince helps Kara through the tough times, when Kara really needs someone by her side. They are both in and out of the hospital and are struggling to try to survive.
Lurlene McDaniel really showed in great detail the affects cystic fibrosis could have on a person's life. It is a wonderful book to read, especially if you do not know much about cystic fibrosis. Kara falls for a boy, which makes the book more interesting, because she does not want him to be turned off by the cystic fibrosis she has.
A Time to Die is a book you could not live without reading. This book left me with wanting to find more about cystic fibrosis and the book made me want to read more of Lurlene McDaniel's books.

5 out of 5 stars It Brought a Tear to my Eye.......2002-06-11

A Time to Die has to be my favourite book in the OWL series. Kara and Vince's struggle to live is very inspiring and I admire them both for their courage and determination. Because I, along with my brother, am a victim of CF, I was glad to see someone trying to make the world more aware of this disease. I could really relate to Kara and Vince and found their thoughts and feeling about their disease to be similar to my own. This book is very well written with interesting characters and plot twists. This book brought a definite tear to my eye.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected, but well done........2007-10-03

I ran across the author some time back, and just recently again. I'm a hack writer from Northern KY/Cincinnati area, and wanted to support a local boy as well as read a story based in the area I'm from. I've not found many stories based in Cincinnati...

    Anyway..

The book is good. I like the protagonist, Joe Box, and found him enjoyable to read about. The plot is creative and the book is well written.

My only issue was that I did not realize how much of a role Joe's faith played into the story, and my interest waned when religion became such an integral part of the plot.

Overall, a good story, but expect a Christian theme.

Keep up the good work Mr Robinson.

4 out of 5 stars Really good book, but a bit too graphic in violence.......2007-06-04

"Until the Last Dog Dies" is an interesting and well written book. It is in first person style and follows a private detective (former policeman) who is a Vietnam veteran. His unit in Nam was assigned to hunt down an enemy sniper. Now some thirty years later those events are resurfacing as the men in his unit seem to be dying under mysterious circumstances.
The novel has a fast pace and good character development. Without giving away plot secrets suffice it to say that there are twists and turns. I enjoyed the novel very much.
There are a few spots that push the envelop on violence and are a bit graphic, but they are few. I would have given the novel five stars if the violence was not as vividly described.

5 out of 5 stars Realistic, thrilling fiction!.......2006-12-03

I don't usually read Christian fiction. Not because I'm an atheist or agnostic or any other "a" word that would make my Southern Baptist parents turn over in their graves, but because I like my fiction quite a bit more true-to-life than is usually allowed for by the unrealistic restrictions most Christian publishers place upon their authors. So I was thrilled to find that Joe Box--John Robinson's rough-edged detective in UNTIL THE LAST DOG DIES--is as real as... well, as Joe himself might say, as real as a slap upside the head from your mama when you're not paying attention.

Joe is a multi-dimensional character who takes you with him just as deftly when he revisits 30-year-old memories of Vietnam as when you follow him breathlessly through the investigation into who is killing all his former platoon buddies. And for all Joe's lingering hard-nosed habits, ever-present and steadily growing is an inner peace and unmistakable contentment that come from Joe's still-new relationship with God that allows him to face the madman who wants to destroy all that Joe loves.

Imperfect Christians are much better examples for non-believers than any holier-than-thou pontificator with nary a flaw, bad habit, or tarnished spot on his halo. Joe Box is a real Christian who is learning to live with his faith--warts and all. Readers of all kinds will both like him and identify with him, and I can't wait to join him in his next adventure.

5 out of 5 stars When the Last Dog Dies: A Joe Box Mystery - by John Laurence Robinson.......2006-11-04

Joe Box is not your typical, "meek as a lamb, turn the other cheek Christian". A hard-boiled private detective who's only recently been saved, Joe's seen the darker side of life: he's survived a harrowing tour of duty in Vietnam, been exposed to the dark underbelly of the world through his brief stint as a cop and his work as a PI, and he's a man who's lost much: his father to a horrible work-related accident and his young wife and unborn son to a tragic car accident.

His recent salvation has rescued him from years of darkness and drunken oblivion, but still - he's got a lot of rough edges left. He's got a bit of a temper, and the burdens he's carried all these years would be enough to wear down even those of the most stalwart of faith - he's a bit cynical, too. However, with the support of his church and pastor, and old war-time mentor, and Agnes - a caring woman who might just be the new love of his life - he's growing. He's not perfect, he's no saint or missionary - but he's a born-again Christian who is learning the power of a saving faith.

Hopefully, he'll live long enough to see Christ's work on his life in full.

A dark specter from the past has reared its ugly head, from Joe's time in Vietnam. A fiendish enemy thought long gone and buried has returned, with deadly intent: he's picking off members of Joe's platoon, one by one. Making their deaths look like accidents, eerily snuffing their lives out in the manner which each fears the most, this killer - who is exerting otherworldly, inhuman precision and skill - is working his way back in revenge, putting Joe and those he cares about square in the cross-hairs.

As Joe scrambles for a way to defend himself from this real world but clearly demonic intent, he searches his memories of the past for clues, anything that will help him understand his foe better. He also realizes his survival depends less on his wit and gun, but more on the grace of the God to whom he's so recently entrusted his life. The fact remains, though: he's being stalked by a cold-hearted killer who will stop at nothing to make sure Joe's "pushing up daisies". Will Joe be forced to take a life for only the second time since `Nam?

John Laurence Robinson's character Joe Box is a revolutionary Christian character, in my mind, and his first adventure, Sock Monkey Blues, published in 2002, clearly paved the way for the development of current Christian fiction. Joe is irreverent, realistic, and tough: an honest portrayal of a new Christian struggling to reconcile his faith with his past reliance on his own human efforts. This novel is almost the perfect blend of classic, Ellery Queen/Sam Spade detective fiction and Christian fiction; it portrays honest truths about being a new Christian, but still exudes that "noir fiction" feel that crime story fans love.

Robinson handles multiple shifts in narrative well, going back and forth smoothly between the present and Joe's flashbacks to both Vietnam and parts of his life, and personally - I enjoyed the Vietnam segments best. This is not a negative comment on the novel, but with the exception of the conclusion, most of the novel's action is found when Joe and his buddies are tramping through the Vietnam jungle, pursuing the mysterious and elusive sniper who would someday turn the tables and hunt them (I liked these parts so much, in fact, that I hope Laurence revisits Box's days in Vietnam in the future - perhaps putting an entire story-line back there).

I especially appreciated the reality of this novel: even given a Christian's call to be meek, merciful, and to "turn the other cheek" - evil never rests, evil shows no quarter. As I'm sure many born-again Christians serving as policemen or in the military will attest to, when the bad guy starts shooting, sometimes the only thing you can do is pray -and shoot back.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2004-10-28

I am quickly becoming a fan of John Laurence Robinson. After reading his first book, Sock Monkey Blues, I couldn't wait to be captivated by another Joe Box mystery. I was not disappointed. UNTIL THE LAST DOG DIES is yet another treasure to be devoured by any mystery enthusiast. Mr. Robinson certainly has a gift for weaving interesting plots, creating larger than life characters, and blending reality with spirituality while maintaining a sense of humor.

This is a smooth, fast paced read that never lets you down. The reader easily feels like part of each scene while maintaining a healthy distance, lurking in the dark shadows. There should be a reason to read a book. Mr. Robinson's hook is the human character he has created with Joe Box. Joe is the sarcastic, street-smart private eye that maintains his edge while showing a hint of his vulnerabilities. He is a loveable character indeed. Add the suspense and you have one outstanding read. Well done and highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars The Tragic History .......2005-04-27

Have you actually seat down and read a book? What all kinds of books do you like to read daily? Me I like all kinds of books. Such as romantic, mystery, and sad stories. That's all about what I read. But there are lots of interesting stories out there in the world.

There is this one book I read a couple of weeks ago. It was one of my favorite books I have read. Its sad, happy in some parts, has love in the book in a way. Nice and interesting. I think you should read it but first let me tell you about this book. I'm sure you will like it.

This book is by Lurlene McDaniel. She is a good author I think. I have read one of her books before. The book is called one Last Wish Someone Dies, Someone Lives. This is about a young man that writes Katie O' Roark A letter while she is in the hospital. In that letter there was a certified check for one hundred thousand dollars. On that letter it was stamped OLW meaning One Last Wish Foundation. Also it said your friend JWC. She didn't know what to think a guy that gave her money and she had no clue why. She was puzzled for days.

Then in this book a guy name Josh watched his brother on the football field go down cold. Scared to death Josh runs to him takes him to the hospital. No longer they were there. Josh and his grandfather heard the bad news of their brother/grandchild. The doctors came out and asked if they would like to donate his organs. That was the hardest mistake they have ever made in their lives. They said there last good byes, and there was no more of him. But Josh went to meet the girl that his brothers heart was going to Katie O' Roark. Did they become friends? Was he mad? Who had wrote the letter? To find more information on this book. You can check it out at Lincoln County Library.

This book was sad, but happy too, it was a great book and I think you and your friends would enjoy this book. Not just these book but also all of Lurlene McDaniel books. She is a great author.

5 out of 5 stars it changed my life.......2005-01-14

I believe that some of the books I read as an adolescent have truly shaped my outlook on life as an adult, and few more so than this book. I picked it up by happy accident at a garage sale, and was immediately hooked on this author. Even though I still consider this one to be the best, I also loved all her others. This made me more sympathetic to people with illnesses where before they tended to make me uncomfortable. It also made me realize that I wanted to be an organ donor, and that I needed to tell my family this, in case something happened to me. Though I'd prefer to be using my own organs for a long time, if something happens to me, then it is a very great comfort to me to know that my death could mean life to others. If I have children, I will be sure to encourage my girls (or boys, though they probably wouldn't dig them) to read these books, because I think if more people read these then more people would become organ donors, and in turn more people would live.

4 out of 5 stars Someone Dies Someone lives a heart warming story.......2003-11-06

Someone Dies, Someone lives, Is a great book it kept me hooked on to each word till the end of the last page. Its weird how a death can make a huge impact on two people. Aaron's death might have been good for both Katie for keeping her alive with his heart and heart breaking for Josh for loosing his only brother who got him as far as he is in life. This book is a type of book that will keep you guessing till the end.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2001-12-03

At the beginning of a quartet of books starring Katie, the running champ that steals the pages of this book, Katie is plagued with a fatal heart disease. She won't survive without a heart transplant... and how many people have spare, healthy hearts to pass up? Despite getting a good transplant, Katie is down in the dumps. Will she ever run again? Will she reject the transplant? Then Katie meets Josh... she's more connected to him then meets the eye. Read this book! It's another one of McDaniel's fabulous books.

5 out of 5 stars One Last Wish.......2000-09-14

I've read quite a few books in the One Last Wish series and along with She Died Too Young, this one is my favourite. It is very realistic and with very believable characters. The story just takes you along with it. The main character in this book is Katie who desperatly needs a heart transplant after a virius has severly weakened her heart. It switches between scenes with Katie and Josh, who's brother Aaron dies and ends up being Katie's donor. After her transplant Katie had to fight to become a track runner again. I like the ending of this book because it doesn't all end 'happily ever after' but it's inspiring and uplifting. I recommend this book to anyone.
