What a load of you know what.

The best written diet book would be as follows.

Mark Hyman deals with many myths associated with dieting and weight loss. He explains many not so obvious causes of gaining weight. He also reminds the reader of important rules to follow in order to keep not only thin but also healthy. All in all this is a good book for someone committed to losing weight and keeping it off. What I particularly liked about this book is its focus being shifted towards living healthy lifestyle. The author emphasizes the importance of cleansing the liver and detoxifying your whole body. This sounds to me like a revamp of the same good ideas so well presented in the book Can We Live 150 in which the author focuses exclusively on health and self-help (body cleansing, proper breathing, and using all the "natural doctors who are always with you"). Interestingly losing weight seems to be the natural outcome of one's healthy lifestyle. This has at least been so in my case.

Ok, so it says it is not a "diet" book. Then it better be useful, and it better be interesting. The book fails on part two: it's full of useful information but is not as entertaining and easy to read as the YOU books by Dr. Oz. Ultrametabolism is ultra bo-ring.

Dr Ann's 10 step plan is great. It follows the same glycemic index model that the South Beach diet does, but Dr Ann's explanations of the role of blood sugar and insulin in the body really helped me understand why this diet works and is so healthy. She has a section in the book about various diseases and conditions, and specific foods to focus on. My husband has lost 15 lbs and I have lost 10 lbs in the 5 weeks since we started the diet, and we are eating healthier than ever before, and enjoying it.

This book is fabulous. I have recommended it to many of my family and friends, and we all follow it as much as we can. I don't think of it as a "Diet" (although it works) as much as a guide to overall healthy eating. As a physician, I am wary of these things, but I am totally sold on Dr. Ann's. (Ignore the somewhat cheesy cover, though!)

This is a no-nonsense, cut-to-the-chase book which gives you the information you need to eat sensibly. In a world of empty diet promises that offer weight loss that cannot be maintained, this book gives readers a formula for life. What a relief to read diet/nutrition information that does not come with a sales pitch for products that cannot offer a long-term solution. Thank you, Dr. Ann.

Dr. Blanchard has some good ideas about how to balance T4 and T3, but the book was
lacking information I had hoped it would contain. The human thyroid actually produces
10% T3, and 90% T4 -- so I'm not quite sure why Dr. Blanchard arrived at the 2%
solution -- perhaps most of his patients still have functioning thyroids, but functioning
at a lower than normal level.

There is almost no discussion of patients who have NON-functioning
thyroid glands, thyroidectomies, or myxedema. As a patient with a non-functioning
thyroid, and also having experienced myxedema due to lack of adequate medication, I found
this book was not very useful. There was no discussion of a full physiological replacement
dosage. I am unfortunately familiar with the symptoms of myxedema, and aware than incompetent
physicians are capable of inducing myxedema in a severely hypothyroid patient by relying on the
TSH test and underdosing the patient.
Also, I would like to have seen more discussion on the MANY types of thyroid
antibodies, and how these can affect the type of medication and dosage a
patient needs to feel well. I would also like to have read a discussion on why
some people need a higher than normal dosage to feel well -- due to poor stomach
absorption, thyroid resistance, anemia, etc. For reasons not well understood, other individuals
do not adequately convert T4 to T3 in their bodies; thus they require high amounts
of T3. There was no discussion on this point, either.

Something I had expected in the book (from other reviews) was a discussion of the physical
symptoms of inadequate or excessive T4, and T3 levels. Instead, the reader was
referred to the blood test again.

So for those patients with severe hypothyroidism, or non-functioning glands, you're still
on your own to figure out the best treatment regimen. The 2% T3 plan is
just too simple, and this book offers no explanation of what a full physiological
replacement dosage should be.

Read this along with Mary Shomons book and you are on your way to learning what you need to know to manage your thyroid disease. I was shocked at what I didn't know after being ill for years. Read it, re-read it and memorize it. Then ask your dr. questions. You can control your disease and symptoms if you have the knowledge needed.

I just what to say thanks for writing the book. I learned a lot about hypothroidism. I'v had it for 10 years. I never new about T3 free. Now I have read more books on thryroid problems. This one is the best. It really tells it like it is. Great information, and what you need to do to get better. All I can say is just read it you will be surprised.

The author writes a nice overview of the entrepreneurial process. It's basically for novices but it does a good job for this audience. The only problem I have with this book is that it is too basic and is therefore non-unique because it is so low-level. Regardless, I must say that for the right audience, it does a fine job over giving the big picture.

If you are advanced or aspire to become advanced, I would recommend "The Startup Company Bible for Entrepreneurs" but only for high-tech entrepreneurs. Even this author has recommended it.

This is a delightful little book that contains a wealth of useful and helpful information and ideas on starting a small business and ensuring that it is viable and succesful. The book is well written and easy to follow and interesting to read.

This is a must read for entrepreneurs, particularly budding ones as the information the book provides is very practical and can help you avoid making costly errors. The book covers a wide range of topics including the start-up process, marketing the business on a small budget, cash-flow forecasting, among other things.

The book is an excellent companion for the entrepreneur that is well worth having.

This book does a terrific job of presenting some of the most important issues entrepreneurs face when embarking on new ventures, touching on topics such as the business plan, funding, team building, and cash flows. Using simple, yet stunningly accurate models of the entrepreneurial process, Steven Gold distills complex subjects into simple, practical, take-away messages. The classification of entrepreneurial personalities (professionals, pragmatists, and inventors) is something I think we can all relate to. I find the metaphor which compares building a new company to making "stone soup" equally compelling. There are countless books out there for budding entrepreneurs, but this one is no fluff. It gets right down to the nuts and bolts so you can concentrate on your business.

I really enjoyed the Ruins. Probably slightly more so than A Simple Plan. But both were brilliantly done. I will say about the author, he has an incredible knack for taking an unlikely scenario and making it believable. Although the books are poles apart in premise, they are very similar in sense. Both books are true page-turners with the tension mounting as the story unfolds. And the endings are anything but ordinary.

Reading A Simple Plan is like watching a train wreck waiting to happen: you want everything to turn out, although you know from their choices it won't. A true suspenseful novel.

I saw the movie about two dozen times, a little movie no one went to see that's really, really entertaining, so I decided to get the book.

If you've seen the movie, the 2nd half of the story has been radically changed, but that's fine, becuase that leave surprises in store. Unlike the Da Vinci Code which was written as a screenplay and filmed as such with NO surprises in it,the book A Simple Plan has many new surprises in store, such as the character Sonny who also meets a very gruesome death to make sure Hank doesn't lose his precious cash.

THANK HEAVENS FOR STUPID/LAZY COPS! Hank and Jacob leave enough evidence at Lou's house to completely unravel the tale of what Hank told them happened: such as driving down to Sonny's place, bringing him back to murder him. There were tire tracks in the snow everywhere ,like the death of Dwight Pederson (Stevenson in the movie for some reason) who supposedly drove off a bridge to his death but if the cops had followed his tire tracks back to their origin, there'd have been signs of a huge physical struggle in the snows. This is the only plot hole, the forensic stupidity of the police.

Also in the book Jacob was blond and morbidly obese and not mentally simple. I pictured him being played by John Candy if he'd been alive in his first non-comedic role. Unfortunately Billy Bob Thornton got the role and I wasn't sure if he was simple or not. He couldn't figure out how to fake a flat tire, but he was real smart at faking a crime scene (??)
But all in all, I loved the writing and you just can't devour each page fast enough. I hope Mr. Smith writes more books.

It's a simple premise. What would happen if three men--two brothers and a friend--should stumble on a bag full of money in the woods? Stolen money, you'd have to assume, millions of dollars in non-sequential, hundred-dollar bills--enough that somebody, somewhere, has to be looking for it. Should they keep the cash? Use it to escape from their one-traffic-light town? Call the police? Scott Smith immerses his characters in this moral dilemma of a situation and lets us watch as the ostensibly reasonable plan they agree on leads inevitably, inexorably, to a string of tragic consequences.

Smith makes it look easy. In this book as well as in his second novel, The Ruins, he puts people in a trying situation and records what happens to their characters as they respond to events. The plot of the novel arises naturally from their actions, which follow naturally from the initial set-up. Writing such a book oneself almost seems possible, but of course the simplicity of the story is only apparent.

A Simple Plan is a perfect suspense novel. Smith's protagonist, Hank Mitchell--from whose perspective the story is told--is forever in danger of being found out. The bag of stolen money, stashed precariously under his bed, nearly throbs in the story, Tell-Tale-Heart-like, constantly in our minds as a source of potential trouble for him. Incredibly, Hank remains entirely sympathetic throughout the story. He may do some bad things, but he's still a normal guy caught up in extraordinary circumstances. His responses, if regrettable, make perfect sense given man's natural urge for self-preservation. Readers may insist that they would act otherwise, but Smith makes a good case for the argument that Hank really never has much of a choice.

There is only the one choice: should they keep the money, or call the police?

Do yourself a favor and read this book.

I love how Scott Smith sets this up so that each decision the main character makes seems like the only good decision at the time. Yet each morally bankrupt decision leads to a darker and darker place.

This book would be fantastic except the very ending is so hopelessly and relentlessly bleak. I felt like I'd been beat up for sympathizing with a character trying to improve his life. I'm sure that's what Smith was aiming for but it was just too much for me.

A Simple Plan by Scott Smith begins with a very simple premise. Three men find a plane with millions of dollars in cash. Rather than turn the money over to the police, they agree to hide it for six months and divide it as long as no one comes looking for it. Told from the perspective of one of the three men, Hank Mitchell, we see this simple plan begin to unravel almost as soon as it is conceived. His two partners in this crime, his brother and the brother's only friend, are both drunken losers and impatient to start spending the money. I won't give away plot details because this is a suspenseful novel and giving away most plot developments would really damage a reader's enjoyment.

A Simple Plan was also made into a major motion picture and for the first half, they could have almost used the book as the screenplay. Events start to diverge after that but the overall spirit of the story is the same in both forms. Even though I had seen the movie previously, I still enjoyed the book. It would doubtless be even more enjoyable if the story is new to you. The story moves along at a brisk pace and the character of Hank Mitchell is fascinating.

In short, I definitely recommend A Simple Plan. It's a true page turner and very well written.

I totally buy into his approach and have been doing it for 2 weeks. I bought my own supplements, not his ridiculously expensive ones. I have no sugar cravings which is an all-time first for me. I also think my skin is looking better.

That said, I am barely able to do the shopping and meal preps, it is way more work than any other approach. Something has to be prepped/cooked at all three meals. I work at home and don't have kids. If that were not the case I don't know if I would be able to do this.

I like this book minus the gimmicks. You can still do this diet and find alternatives to his supplements and skin products. However, the one thing that concerns me about this diet is that the healthy amount of fish to consume per week maximum according to the water bureau is 12 ounces per week. This is due to mercury levels-which are evident in all fish-some more than others, including wild Alaskan salmon. In this diet, Dr. Perricome asks you to eat something like 32 ounces of fish per week. As a woman of pregnancy age, this would be a mistake. So, that is my main issue with this diet. If you don't care about mercury levels in your bloodstream, go for it!

I picked up this book - well, my roommate did - about 6 days ago and immediately stopped eating grains, and started eating cod liver oil, flax, salmon, sardines, and salads like Dr. Perricone recommends (I've shunned legumes, too, for the heck of it - the paleo diet encourages that). I lost five pounds - in 6 days! All water weight, I'm sure, but that's still killer. Also, I sometimes seem to have an insatiable thirst on this diet...anyone else experience that?

This diet will be really tough for people who don't like veggies or fish. For me, it is the intuitive way to go, though, so..make yourself like it!! - get hypnotherapy, whatever you have to do! I am an intellectual property attorney and law professor. I frequently have the opportunity to talk to entrepreneurs and individuals interested in start up advise. I ALWAYS recommend this book to people who are new to business plans. The book has some sample business plans in the back. Truthfully these sample plans are not all that good, but do provide some idea of the proper layout and format of a business plan. The reason I like this book so much is because of the detailed questions it forces readers to ask themselves. The majority of the book is set up like a workbook, and asks highly detailed questions that must be answered before writing can begin. These questions will also force the would be entrepreneur to think of and address a series of questions that many first timers would forget or not even know to ask or consider. This book is probably not for people who have been through the process, but for those who are doing it themselves and/or doing it for the first time buying this book is money well spent!

This book is far from complete. It has some very basic information about creating a business plan, asks you pertinent questions regarding creating your plan, and has 11 pretty poor examples.

I originally bought the book for a Business Plan Writing Class. It was a new book for the instructor and he abandon using it after the second week. It does not provide details in any area of business planning, and though it asks you questions to get you thinking in the correct way, does not provide guidance on how to answer the questions or what areas are important for different types of plans. Furthermore, the questions are not structured in a way that actually helps you formulate a useable business plan. The “101 questions” remind me to a employment application or high school written exam.

One of the reasons the instructor selected the book was for the examples. Upon closer examination however, they are really bad business plans that do not provide the depth required in the "real world." The plans are very simplistic. They might pass for someone getting an SBA loan or for internal management use, but a VC or other sophisticated financier would immediately throw any of these plans away. Even the formatting of the plans are bad; they look like they were written on a typewriter twenty years ago!

The book offers little to no advice on how to write your plan for different target audiences, what elements are important for different types of businesses, and because its examples are so incomplete, they give someone without prior exposure to business plans a false idea of what your financier is really looking for. ...

I have really enjoyed this book. It has simple, straightforward exercises I can do on my own.
After some bad experiences, this book has really helped me move forward.

The 1 rating is for the confusion of this order. I have received notification that the book was out of print; mailed; then that I had cancelled the order...I have no clue what has happened to the book I have ordered. It would be nice to be able to truly give a review of it!! I have not found a way to contact anyone about this, though I have tried.

It has a lot of great ideas and simple meals to fix. The only reason it gets a 4 and not a 5 is because I like pictures so I can see what the meal is to look like.

I have really loved this book! After reading "The Hallelujah Diet", I purchased this book for more recipe ideas. As the title implies, weekly mealplans are given, along with grocery lists for the week to prepare all of those meals. I think it is well put together and I have really enjoyed the recipes. It makes this eating lifestyle that much more doable. Well worth the $9, and then some!

I suffer from Spasmodic Dysphonia and after being told by my doctor that the only treatment available was to get Botox shots in my vocal chords every three months, being a singer, I looked for an alternative treatment and found this book. It has helped me to use my voice in such a way as to enable me to speak without my voice cracking much of the time. Surprisingly, this condition doesn't seem to affect the singing voice. If I remember to use the advice in this book, it works very well. I have sent it to many friends who also have vocal problems

Let me start off by saying that this book is a life-saver. When I say it is the best self-help book I've ever read, I mean because most self-help books are tempopary and sometimes lead you right to where you started but this book is very practical and offers permenant result. I have been abusing my voice throughout my life, and I see the reaction it had on people. People were avoiding me because I always wanted a commanding but ended with a harsh, nauseon, and unpleasant husk. At first I was skeptical it was ever possible to change one's voice and ever more skeptical when doing the extremely simple excercises, but...IT WORKS!!! Now I have a vibrant voice that is project deeply and loudly anywhere commanding the attention I always wanted (think of it as yelling deeply but without souding like yelling). Though it does take some practices until permeant; and for me it took a week. A must have for anybody wanting that extra success!

I found this book really helpful. As an actor who does a lot of professional stage, I have had to spend time working on my voice over the years. Many books I find, for lack of a better term, too "groovy" for me (Linlater, Berry) or too complicated (Lessac). Here, Cooper deftly sweeps aside a lot of that clutter, corrects some simple misapprehensions about the use of the speaking voice, and presents a simple, elegant plan for improving. You can even "check" your work with a voice recorder to see if it's actually working. It may not be everything you need to really improve your voice (hence the 4 stars), but if I had to pick only one book to own, this would be it.

On the face of it, Cooper's advice may seem too easy. After all, the whole idea and the suggested lessons could probably fit on a single page. But this stuff works; so, the fact that it's simple shouldn't dissuade anyone from it's value. Other reviewers have noted Cooper's penchant for repetition, and that he tries too hard to sell his reader on the importance of a good speaking voice (presumably his reader's already sold else why would he have bought the book). But it's a short read anyway, so what's the big deal. And besides, if it was any thinner I wouldn't be able to find it on my shelves.

First of all, you do not need to purchase and read all of Dr. Cooper's books. "Change Your Voice, Change Your Life" has the same useful material as "Stop Committing Voice Suicide" or "Winning With Your Voice." I know, since I have read all three. If you want to learn Dr. Cooper's methods for vocal improvement, read any one of them.

Dr. Cooper provides encouragement and instruction to anyone who is dissatisfied with his or her voice. He encourages a respect for individuality. He urges us not to fret over whether our voices are "too high" or "too low." The voice that sounds best for you is your own "natural voice," which largely means a voice at your natural pitch. Dr. Cooper teaches you how to find your natural pitch. He also stresses the importance of proper breathing. For him, proper "breath support" is achieved through diaphragmatic breathing, as it is generally termed.

A few years ago, when I first read "Change Your Voice, Change Your Life," I did all of the exercises to the best of my understanding. However, I never was sure that I was doing them correctly. I wished that Dr. Cooper was in the room with me, telling me whether I was doing the exercises properly, and correcting me if necessary. Eventually, I consulted with Dr. Cooper at his office in Los Angeles, for a considerable fee. As it turns out, I was doing the exercises correctly, all along. If you try the exercises, do so with confidence that you understand them, and that you are doing them correctly. The books' instructions are simple. Don't imagine that they are more difficult than they are.

Here's some advice for men who think their natural pitch is "too high," and who lower the pitch so as to produce a sound they consider more masculine or authoritative. When you artificially speak at a pitch that is lower than your natural pitch, you lose resonance. The result is a voice that is thin or weak, a voice that makes you sound depressed or lifeless. You need to speak at your natural pitch, even if you feel sure that your natural pitch is "too high." By speaking at your natural pitch, you restore resonance to your voice. As a result, you sound more vital and confident. Paradoxically, a listener may mistake this sound for a lower pitch. In reality, the pitch is higher than your affected pitch, but the sound is so much better. Resonance makes all the difference.
