5 out of 5 stars transformational book.......2007-10-05

Zero Limits can only be described as life altering. The pure and simple practices of the Hawaiian healing method detailed in the book can literally change the world as we know it.

5 out of 5 stars Rev Theresa Claytor, GCFP, CLL.......2007-10-04

This book is so simple that it is hard to fathom. I have been using this ancient Hawaiian healing system and it has been working for me. In order to let go of hoping I can forgive somebody else for a perceived wrong, I just ask to be forgiven. I now know that everything exists within me and not out there. So the way out of a problem is to go within. Thanks I needed that.

1 out of 5 stars Another rediculous rip-off.......2007-10-03

Nothing but sales pitch for his other books, his seminar, and he says nothing about real Ho'O Ponopono.
And I am disgusetd by his published claim that he is "The Jesus of Business".

Thompson

5 out of 5 stars Another excellent one!!!!!!!.......2007-09-30

This is the second book by Joe Vitale that I have finished in record time! He has me hook, line and sinker.
I thought "The Attractor Factor" was great, but this one makes me even more of a true fan of his work.
ANYONE who buys "Zero Limits" will greatly benefit from the information it contains. As far as I am concerned, there is NO OTHER self improvement bok or guru on the market. Joe Vitale's works blow them ALL out of the water.
I can't wait for "The Key" in a few weeks!

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

As the former Chief People Officer at PepsiCo, and now a management professor at the Columbia University School of Business, Feiner shares his solutions from his years of handling unexpected crises, mediating between warring corporate factions, and taking care of all the people problems that pop up on a routine basis in companies all over the world. Feiners approach is based on common sense and practicality, and his book is full of examples that managers everywhere will identify with and relate to. Along the way, Feiner doles out his pragmatic laws of how those in supervisory roles can resolve these vexing situations. Interactive and entertaining, THE FEINER POINTS OF LEADERSHIP will be mandatory reading for anyone in a managerial position.

Download Description

THE FEINER POINTS OF LEADERSHIP offers fifty insightful laws covering everything from managing tough bosses and difficult subordinates, to dealing with uncooperative colleagues, to overcoming resistance to corporate change. Based on Feiner's experiences as an aspiring executive, senior leader, and management consultant, THE FEINER POINTS shows you that leadership has little to do with grand strategies or personal charisma.

And the author's tales from the trenches will make you smile as you discover:

. The Law of Building a Cathedral: Leaders convince their people that they're building a cathedral, not cutting stone

. The Law of Class vs. Style: Never...ever...ever...ever treat your boss like a bumbling old fool (even if he or she is one)

. The Law of Winning Championships: No matter how talented the team, team members have different agendas-and leaders know what they are

. The Law of the Silent Sinner: If you can't tell anyone what you're doing, don't do it!

. The Law of the Onion: High-Performance Leaders look beneath the surface-and never assume anything

. The Law of the Tombstone: Remember what's really important-and that your net worth won't be noted on your final resting place.

With an easy-to-access appendix that lists typical office problems and points you to the laws that can solve them, THE FEINER POINTS OF LEADERSHIP will help you right away-with dramatic and measurable results that ensure the long-term success of both your career and your organization.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular book on leadership.......2007-07-15

I bought this book on the recommendation of students who had taken the class with Feiner. It has surpassed all my expectations. Its the most clearly-written and practical book on leadership that I have ever come across. Most books and articles only say "what" to do - and that horse been beaten plenty. Feiner gets into "why" and "how" these ideas should be implemented, e.g., why resenting, stonewalling or badmouthing an incompetent boss is a recipe for disaster. And his genius is in describing simple ways to put lofty ideas into play. This book is SO GOOD that I plan to read it AGAIN after a few months on the job to reflect on issues that have come up.

5 out of 5 stars Practical!.......2007-04-17

On the first page, Michael Feiner disputes the traditional "heroic individual" picture of a leader. This thinking, referred to as "Myth of the Great Man", holds that leadership is an inherently individual phenomenon consisting of solitary heroics, epitomized by Patton, Napoleon, etc... But Feiner states that 90% of leadership is invisible - "the aggregation of hundreds upon hundreds of small interactions - most of which take place out our sight - projected across layer upon layer of relationships, day in and day out". He spends the remaining 250+ pages explaining this, through a series of eponymous Feiner laws of leadership.

Feiner pulls liberally from his experiences at Pepsi. He peppers his high opinion of his own accomplishments with self-deprecating humor, and he shares his mistakes and regrets. His text is very readable and delivered in a conversational style. I found a good many quotable sound bytes I liked, some original and some from other authors.

At times, there seemed to be a repetitive effort to fill pages - laws identified by smug little titles supported by anecdotes from the author's career, then summarized at the end of each chapter and summarized again at the book's end. And occasionally I questioned the logic of the organization of the chapters. However, by the time I finished the book, it all seemed to work.

Feiner offers some really powerful practical insights on treating people right, sticking to your values, and being politically correct where at all possible. No faddish management theory here, just timeless advice and applicable tools that apply to all levels of organizational leadership and interaction. My copy of "The Feiner Points" is full of highlights and notes and I suspect I will be referring to it frequently.

5 out of 5 stars A readable practical book.......2005-12-05

I bought this book few months ago and it was interesting to go through it step by step. As a leader the first thing one must learn is how to deal with subordinates. After going through the 8 laws mentioned in Chapter 3: Leading Subordinates, one can imagine how less we focus on the people who are our main assets. A leader's success depends upon the success of his subordinates and these 8 laws are the basis for that success. One need to read each law multiple times so that it gets engrossed in one's heart. The "Performance contract" is a must for everyone to set clear expectations.

The examples provided in the books are mostly based on author's experience and I found Feiner very sincere in putting them straight. Overall a must for anyone who wants to build lasting relationship with their people.

5 out of 5 stars The Principles that Enable Success in Leadership and Life..........2004-12-07

With clarity, courage and conviction, this book delivers a message conveying the "whats" and, more importantly, the "hows" to successful leadership that enable individual, team, and company performance to grow and succeed. In short, Feiner guides leaders to put the heart and humanity back into business and in doing so, awakens the soul of business - yielding an environment that is embraced mutually and faithfully by peers, subordinates, bosses, and the total organization.

"The Feiner Points of Leadership" is the story of a man's extraordinary career, where past failures have in turn drawn enlightenment, as he builds a leadership model that all leaders and managers "must" understand, follow and instill throughout their organization to obtain competitive advantage.

Feiner guides the reader into becoming a "High Performance Leader," which will drive unprecedented and unlimited success in business - and in life! A must read.

5 out of 5 stars Great Toolbox!.......2004-11-12

I have several leadership books, mostly social/psychological theory stuff; Feiner makes sense! Every new supervisor should have this on his/her desk, as well as "And Dignity for All" by Despain. Put it to work immediately.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is a great introduction to commercial paper!.......2004-12-18

I have to disagree with the last reviewer. This book was thorough, and handled commercial paper in a simply and easy to understand way. I didn't take commercial paper in law school, and was completely unfamiliar with the lay of the land. This book was an excellent starting point and covered all the basics necessary to do well on the bar exam. If you are like the last reviewer, and already have a solid enough grasp on the subject matter to be able to nitpick discrepancies between different versions of the UCC, then this might not be a good book for you. But if you are simply looking for a solid introduction to the subject, I highly recommend this book. Considering how lost I was in commercial paper, it was a godsend!

1 out of 5 stars This Book Sucks.......2004-12-07

Don't bother buying this book if your professor teaches the 2004 version of the UCC. I spent hours trying to figure out why one of the chapters was so off base with regard to Accomodation Parties; then I realized the book was dealing with the pre-2002 version of the Code. Brook barely acknowledges the 2004 changes except to note that there are, in fact, changes. Gee, thanks.

However, the day of the trial they are greeted with a strange surprise on the steps of the courthouse: The corpse of the man who made the accusation. Now Decius is up against a much more serious charge of murder. It may cost him his chance to run for office, but not if he can help it. Roberts once again masterfully sets Decius and his adventures against the background of this famed and crumbling Republic, enriching his story with historical detail and the immortal personalities of the day.

4 out of 5 stars Law & Order -- year 703 of the Republic.......2007-08-21

Overall:
----------
SPQR X follows well with the other 9 books in the series in terms of tone, pacing, detail and historical elements. The story is a court room drama done Roman style -- evidence is really secondary to how you work the crowd. Our juror system is not that much different when you come down to it; one would hope that the carefully gathered evidence and logic would top emotional manipulation to decide guilt or innocence.

The story moves very quickly with a dizzy amount of family lineage, Roman law subtle that is obsurce at best and baffling at best.

The character development is slight given the 5 day time frame for the events in the book. However, Julia gets a nice bit of development and does some more affection and compliments toward Decius.

Details:
--------
The compressed timeline of the events made for less investigation and more side characters giving obviously clues to Decius. The obviousness of the clues was a bit of a drawback to the book. The use of a cypher and a female code breaker was a nice touch. It added a nice element to the conspiracy part of the story.

The book seems to be setting up the next book with the transition of Caeser to Dictator...Emperor. There is a clear transition from the old Republic to the declining Empire. It seems that Decius is going to be up for some very interesting times in the near future.

The level of detail on the Roman legal system is quite impressive. However, it seems that the author is trying to impress you with the finer points of something that you have no idea how it works. There is something lost in the translation of the obviously impressive research done by John Maddox Roberts. The legal system/issues sometimes seems to impead the flow of the story / events.

The actual trial is very well written. Decius pulls a rabbit-out-of-the-hat once more.

Summary:
--------
Characters: 4 out of 5
Action: 2 out of 5 -- action is not really part of this story
Plot: 4 out of 5 -- it is hard to following the various machinations in the book. It would have been helpful to make the book a bit longer with some transitionary scenes / explaination scenes.

4 out of 5 stars Realistic detail pulls the reader in.......2007-08-08

This is the tenth is the series, begun in 1990.

We follow the career of Decius Caecilius Metellus the Younger, who has returned from capturing pirates in Cyprus and is flush with money from captured loot. He pays off debts, gives some to the treasury, and runs for judicial office, praetor. Campaigning seems to be going well when a complete stranger, Marcus Fulvius, accuses him of corruption and plundering during his campaign in Cyprus.

This is during the last days of the Republic, when Pompey and Julius Caesar are vying for power. The family of Decius has not taken sides in the power struggle yet, though Decius is married to Caesar's niece, Julia. When they show up for the trial the next morning, Marcus Fulvius is found dead on the steps of the basilica (court building), and Decius finds himself suddenly accused of murder by a Tribune of the People, Publius Manilius. Hermes and Decius are free to investigate, and they find out a lot in the few days they have before the murder trial.

There is a lot of enjoyment here--housebreaking and leaping from balconies; a wine-tasting clue; a very unusual gold ring with a carved sapphire and scrolls in cipher. And there is an exotic and beautiful visiting Egyptian philosopher and mathematician, Callista, to help decode them. The climactic trial, while not the sort we are used to, is riveting.

Roberts is the author of many science fiction and fantasy books as well as this acclaimed series. His glossary and explanation of Roman names and characters helps a great deal in understanding this complicated political thriller. The city and the people are realistically portrayed and the detail is just enough to flesh out the story.

This is the first I have read in the series, and I am going back to read the earlier books.

Armchair Interview agrees.

5 out of 5 stars great series!.......2007-04-03

I am soooo looking forward to SPQR X! I loved all of Roberts' books, they are as good as the Davis' Falco series and WAY better than Saylor's Gordianus the Finder, or the Caesar series by Iggulden. The only serious competition for SPQR would be Simon Scarrow's Macro and Falco, but since they are soldiers, and Decius Caecilius Metellus is a Senator... it's as different as James Bond and Rambo. I can't wait to read SPQR X and I'm VERY excited to read Davis' Saturnalia! This whole week of true ancient Roman enjoyment could only be beaten by an afternoon in Maecenas' garden, or Caracalla's baths ;)Or perhaps a good fight in Vespasian's theater... Don't we ALL like the Colosseum?

3 out of 5 stars Readable but "Energy" of Book Seemed "Curtailed".......2007-01-11

Happy I read it but something was missing as contrasted with other works by the author. The book is 235 pages and that restricts development of both plot and character(s), each of which seemed hurried and abbreviated.

5 out of 5 stars I enjoyed this book........2006-12-21

I have read the entire series and every book is entertaining and fun. Mr. Roberts is a great storyteller who writes a book that is hard to put down. I highly recommend this book as well as the whole series. You won't be disappointed.

      Book Description

The Model Penal Code has been called the principal text in criminal law teaching. It is an ambitious, and influential, attempt to work out the principles of American criminal law in a systematic way. By highlighting the Code's conceptual structure, this study aid helps students to navigate the Code's complex provisions and helps teachers unlock its full pedagogic potential, one all too easily obscured by a fragmented discussion of Code sections dealing with a variety of topics. The appendix includes the text of the Model Penal Code, parts I & II.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-07-20

George Dillman's book on pressure point self-defense is well illustrated and the techniques are easily understood. Understanding pressure points is another skill to be utilized in dealing quickly with an attacker. If you are in the military than this book is probably not for you, but for all civilians out there this book offers the opportunity for a lower impact, non-lethal way to deal with aggressive individuals.

5 out of 5 stars My Rating of the Delivery of This Product.......2007-03-18

I have yet to read this book because I still have other books bought from Amazon.com that I need to finish. In all cases [...] and associated vendors have provided me with nothing but outstanding service where the product arrived in as good or in better condition than advertised within the stated estimated time of delivery.

The service received is a model for all businesses to emulate.

Thankyou very much for requesting my input.

5 out of 5 stars Easy, simple self defense........2007-03-16

I ordered this book for my teenage daughter. Then ordered one for myself. And I will order more for other family members and friends. I have reviewed, purchased and returned several other books with instructions and techniques you simply aren't going to master from a book. Dillman understands that and cuts to the chase with really simple but effective self defense methods you won't find elsewhere.

      2 out of 5 stars Nothing Groundbreaking.......2007-01-21

At first glance this book looked really good however, once I purchased it I found out that it was oversimplified. Mainly just pictures of patterned movements of where to strike an attacker, with no hope of replicating the movments in real life for the average person. The best book I have come across so far is Attack Proof by Perkins. Have a look at Attack Proof first before buying this one, you wont regret it.

3 out of 5 stars Ego and the Dillman Series.......2006-02-11

I found the book informative after getting past all the who's who pictures in the first part. The first ten pages are of Dillman and the celebraties he has hob nobbed with over the years.

I am more impressed with the actual content which is what this book should be about. Learning pressure/vital points and how to use them in self-defense.

I would purchase his other books and will skip the ego pages.

      Product Description

Kari Dunn Buron has done it again. Building on her popular 5-Point Scale, A 5 Is Against the Law! takes a narrower look at challenging behavior with a particular focus on behaviors that can spell trouble for adolescents and young adults who have difficulty understanding and maintaining social boundaries. Using a direct and simple style with lots of examples and hands-on activities, A 5 Is Against the Law! speaks directly to adolescents and young adults. The notion behind the 5-point scale is to take an idea or behavior and break it into five parts to make it easier to understand the different degrees of behavior and, eventually, the consequences of one's behavior. A section is also devoted to anxiety and how to cope with this emotion before it begins to escalate, often leading to impulsive and unacceptable behavior. Throughout the book, the reader is encouraged to think about and create his own behavior and anxiety scale that applies to his particular emotions and situations.

      5 out of 5 stars Very useful!.......2007-05-25

This book is so useful for people with autism spectrum disorders that I wonder why there were no books that are this useful until very recently. As someone with Asperger's Syndrome myself, I realize how much sooner I would have learned good social skills and appropriate behaviour if there had been books like this 30 years ago! For much too long, I was a very marginalized member of society, and this was because nobody gave me the help that I needed in order to know what behaviour is appropriate in what situation. Instead, people just kept me out of situations in which my inappropriate behaviour mattered.

      4 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2007-03-09

This is a very nice resource for the older child with Asperger's or socialcognitive difficulties. There is a lot of flexibility for the skilled educator to adapt the scales for a variety of situations. It is also useful for the inexperienced teacher to use a direct model.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a "must have" for parents and teachers!.......2007-03-08

This book is one of the best resources for teens with ASD. The author presents real life social scenarios and uses a simple behavioral approach to helping teens understand how to make an appropriate response. It is effective as an instructional tool (and therefore preventive) or as a strategic process to remediate negative social interactions. I highly recommend this book!

4 out of 5 stars Great Start to an Awesome Series.......2007-06-14

In a book I suspect was written first and sold second, McKinzie kicks off the Antonio Burns series. Anton is a Wyoming agent who busts meth labs, and he's meeting his Air Force colonel father and ne'er do well brother Roberto in the Wild Fire Valley in Colorado for some mountain climbing and a confrontation of Roberto for his habits. Wild Fire Valley is a busy place when Anton and Leonard Burns arrive to wait for Roberto. A group of environmentalists is there raising a protest over the valley's impending development at the hands of David Fast, who swapped the valley with the government for some valuable lynx habitat lands. Fast wants to turn Wild Fire Peak into a ski resort and the surrounding valleys and meadows into condominiums and strip malls. Leading the opposition to this development is one-eyed Kim Walsh, who lost her eye in the wake of a sexual assault 12 years earlier. Accompanying Kim are pretty, blonde, dread-locked Sunny and her hotheaded boyfriend Cal. As expected, David Fast, his hired thug Alf Burgermeister, and a bunch of other hired muscle disrupt the protest. When Fast's construction site burns shortly thereafter, everyone believes Cal did it, which is why he's found beat to death that night, and Sunny disappears, last seen driving frantically away from the scene.

The local cops, unwilling to listen to Anton's story about Fast and his hired muscle, choose instead to arrest Roberto, on the sole grounds that he has a record. With the police unwilling to lift a finger to go after the real killers and his father called back to Washington on an urgent military matter, Anton must clear his brother's name on his own, along with his huge dog Oso.

Kim Walsh, concerned for her friend Sunny, insists on accompanying Anton on his search to Arizona and Lake Powell, where they believe she's hiding. Unfortunately, Fast and Burgermeister think so, too, and spot Anton and Kim. With no help from the authorities, they have to save not just Sunny and Wild Fire Valley, but a secret cave filled with Anasazi ruins, as well.

Like the other Burns novel I read, I found myself not only drawn to the beautiful places he describes, but also to the characters who make them come alive. Anton is a very likeable guy with a wry sense of humor and a soft heart. Roberto, his wild, drug-addicted brother, is the perfect foil, in some ways very much like Anton, and in others dangerously wild and prone to the unpredictable. Their relationship with their father is complex, fraught with deep respect along with a certain amount of resentment.

This was more of a thriller than a mystery, as there is no secret to whodunit. There was plenty of tense action, and a few chuckles, as well, making for a very fine series kick-off. McKinzie has created a fine cast of characters and crafted an entertaining story in which to meet them.

5 out of 5 stars climbing married to crime adventure.......2007-01-25

As an armchair mountaineer and occasional peak bagger I love his whole series. A few of the characters are a stretch but setting, the plots and most of the principals make his books a total escape pleasure.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting family dynamic.......2003-07-28

There was a very promising start to this book. Very engaging characters in Antonio Burns, a special narcotics agent, his Air Force Colonel father, and his live-on-the-edge, drug-addicted brother. They have a complex and compelling relationship with each other. I loved the parts of the book where they interacted with each other. Great scenes involving rock climbing. The problem is that the main plot has been done hundreds of times before. I didn't feel the characters outside of the Burns men had any special chemistry together and I never really cared about what happened to them.

Anton, Leonard and Roberto Burns characters make this a better book than it is and make it worth reading. A special mention for Anton's dog, Oso, who stole every scene he was in and should probably have a story of his own.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book... Fun Reading.......2003-07-10

      Fast, exciting and well written.

      4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Entertaining.......2003-05-16

It seems every time Special Agent Antonio Burns goes climbing somebody happens to die. You would think he would learn his lesson.
I wasn't excited to read this book. I am not a big fan of climbing or camping or outdoor sports. I enjoy legal thrillers and thought I would trudge through the obligatory adventure scenes. Surprisingly, it was the action that takes place on the mountians and lakes of this book that win you over. Burns is an instantly likable character. What makes him even more likable is the people that surround him. McKinzie has a knack for creating extemely dispicable character. During the reading of this book and his other Burn's book Edge of Justice I found myself getting really angry at the corrupt characters. At points I was squeezing the edges of the books until my hands turned red.
