Raymond Chandler is arguably the best American pulp novelist. His prose is so acutely visual, his characters so raw and intense that it is small wonder that all but one of his books have been made into movies. And his hero Philip Marlowe has graduated into American legend. Together with its companion volume (Stories and Early Novels), Later Novels and Other Writings forms the most complete Chandler collection in print. In addition to his later novels, this collection contains selected essays and letters, biographical information, and textual as well as explanatory notes. As an added bonus, the editor has included Chandler's screenplay to Double Indemnity, the classic Billy Wilder film adapted from James M. Cain's novel. You're able to compare the script to the finished movie and have the rare opportunity to see how one major crime novelist altered and interpreted another.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding in so many ways.......2007-02-24

First, let me say that there's a separate volume of Chandler's early novels. As much as I liked this volume, I actually enjoyed the earlier novels just a little bit more and suggest starting there. I started reading one story and wound up going through all of them in both volumes in the space of a few months. I also wound up reading and enjoying all the Dashiell Hammett stories, but I give Chandler a slight edge.

I won't try to list all the ways these novels are great and entertaining, but here's one thought that hasn't been mentioned in other reviews. Chandler is excellent at presenting a hero-character who has to worry about money and making a living. Indeed, Chandler makes this issue integral to the character's persona and to the plot line. Yes, the books are escapist in so many ways. Yet, in this respect at least, they are far more realistic than almost all of the fiction, and much of the non-fiction, these days.

5 out of 5 stars Writing at its best - and it happens to be in detective noir.......2006-06-20

C-L-A-S-S-I=C HIGH/low notes. These stories are like a deck cards, all aces...... but there are way too few left. I finished "Little Sisters" (GREAT), "Farewell, My Lovely"- is recommended in the other half (earlier edition). The hook is Marlow. In times where many take the easy/cheap way out, I ride hard with Marlow. Marlow does it with style, humor, wit, grit, and nothing less than an all american: get the job done. But in a way that is the opposite his nemesis: the monopolies of power & money. Of course they admire and hate him. But it just doesn't get any better than Chandler. Need an excuse? Then read it for the wrting alone. The best!

5 out of 5 stars The best of Raymond Chandler.......2005-12-05

This book, contaning Chandlers later works, is perhaps the best collection of Chandler you can find. Sure, does not contain the better-known novels - The Big Sleep and Farewell my Lovely - but it does contain The Long Goodbye, which is not only Chandler's finest, but a great novel by any measure.

Chandler lived a tough, hard-drinking life, and these later works came out of his mind with difficulty. But the quality of The Lady in the Lake and The Long Goodbye (The Little Sister is less memorable) make this collection essential.

In addition, the book contains some essays and letters, including Chandler's writing on the mystery genre, which will interest any budding suspense author.

In short, read this book! Read The Long Goodbye, then read it again. This is not just a great mystery, but it is also great literature.

4 out of 5 stars Classic American, cynical detective stories........2005-05-12

Chandler is arguably the best detective story writer out there. If you expand this genre to all mystery writers, he would still be one of the best.

Detective stories aren't as common as they once were, but if you look at the offspring of the Pulp magazine once so popular, television, they are still as popular as ever. Chandler was one author who defined what a detective story was. This book contains four novels:The Lady in the Lake, The Little Sister, The Long Goodbye, and Playback. These are wonderfully entertaining stories that contain the archetypical hard-bitten detective, Philip Marlowe. After reading these stories you will forever see Marlowe in every detective story you see or read, from Magnum to the latest TV cop. How can you not love an author who sums up Modern American Capitalism with lines like these? "We make the finest packages in the world, Mr. Marlowe. The stuff inside is mostly junk." Or an author who in the early 50's, (50 years before the current 'Queers Dress Up' shows) so presciently wrote, "The queer is the artistic arbiter of our age, chum." Or his comment on a speech by a politician, "He did not bore us with any facts."
These books are not just riveting, fun reading, but full of thoughtful quotes like the above.

Chandler also is must-reading for his understanding of criminality, venality, human nature, Southern California, Movies, American culture and American relationship dynamics. I hate to use the word "classic" to describe stories that are just so plain fun to read, but I find it hard not to.

This volume also contains a screenplay, Double Indemnity, and a few essays and letters. The essays "The Simple Art of Murder", and "Writers in Hollywood" should be required reading for anyone interested in 20th century culture, movies, and literature. Just a few tidbits more. Chandler on English Mystery Writers - "The English may not always be the best writers in the world, but they are incomparably the best dull writers." Chandler on boredom - "There are no dull subjects, only dull minds." Chandler on critics - "The average critic never recognizes an achievement when it happens. He explains it after it has become respectable."

My only criticism is that the plots are contrived and sometimes complicated. But such criticism is like complaining that the Mona Lisa would be a fine painting if only it were of a different size.

Chandler is simply wonderful, funny, cynical, and yes, - respectable.

5 out of 5 stars Priceless Solely for The Simple Art of Murder.......2005-01-18

While Hammett may very well have carried the modern hard-boiled mystery forward into the light, Chandler defined it. Of the two, I think I prefer Chandler most. Chandler better than anyone else set the standard for the genre, and laid down the rules to which all the great mystery writers of today rigorously adhere. Here, in brief, is the mystery writer's credo:

'But down these mean streets must a man go who himself is neither tarnished nor afraid.'

As Chandler remarked in his classic essay, The Simple Art of Murder, Hammett rightly deserves the title of Founder of the modern mystery because he succeeded in giving murder back to the kind of people who commit it. So what kind of person goes up against the kind of people who committ murder? Chandler responds with Exhibit A: Philip Marlowe.

Chandler's Marlowe resonates in my favorite mystery romps, the Spenser series, and the archetype also finds its way into more than a few 'Good Cop' dramas.

I enjoy the escapades of Philip Marlowe simply because the wry cynicism, coupled with the tough moral fibre to get to the bottom of any affair and see justice (or at least some sort of closure) served, makes for truly fascinating escapist reading. Each of the books in this collection, as in the collection preceding it, amply deliver on this score.

If you happen to acquire this masterpiece, never let it go. These are classic books, and will never become dated. I personally prefer The Long Goodbye to The Big Sleep, and found the former a longer and more satisfying read. In every story of both collections, there is to be found a depraved tapestry of gilded greater Los Angeles society, quite literally ripped from the headline news of the day. Most mystery fans will love the idea of an honest man in a thoroughly dishonest world, on a righteous quest for justice.

Once you get this triumph of American literature in your hands, mix your favorite drink, disappear to a quiet place with a comfortable chair (with good lighting), and enjoy the Great Master at work. If only more writers could write like this, then I would not need cable TV...

Book Description

The Chinese believe an unseen red thread joins those in this life who are destined to connect. For photographer Richard Bowen, that thread led him to China's state-run welfare institutions, where there are thousands of children, primarily girls, growing up without families to take care of them. Mei Mei presents a poignant glimpse of just a few of these remarkable children. Composed against neutral backgrounds, these portraits capture the girls inner lives, away from their often bleak surroundings. The images show an almost endless range of expressions: small faces filled with longing and hope, joy and sadness, humor and mischief, defiance and despair. Through the camera's eye these young children are no longer orphans, but individuals whose personalities are as vital, distinct, and beautiful as any mother's child. When that unique human being comes into focus, the connection is made and the red thread becomes visible. And once seen, the bond can never be broken.

This book touches my soul every time I open it. I have adopted two girls from China and I see their reflections on every page.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!.......2007-01-25

We are in the process of adopting a baby from China, and this book just made my heart break. The images are so beautiful, and the children are so precious! In my mind, they seem to be simply be waiting... We can't wait to give one of them a home.

3 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking.......2007-01-06

As an adoptive parent of a beautiful Chinese girl, I became extremely upset when I viewed these pictures. But by the grace of God, my daughter could have been featured in this book. That thought and the pictures of these children absolutely broke my heart. The pictures are beautiful but left me with a sense of helplessness because you can't save them all....although you want to. I returned the book because it was just too upsetting. I was torn between giving the book 5 stars because of the impact it has, but gave it 3 so someone might read this review and think twice about viewing it. It was not worth it for me.

5 out of 5 stars From a parent.......2006-08-05

I purchased this book for my wife as we have adopted a baby girl from China. While these photos are from a different orphanage, the impact is the same. We did not get to see all the children at our daughter's orphanage, and they don't allow photos of the kids anyway. I recommend this book for any adoptive parents of children from China, or those looking into it. I will warn you, you will want to go back for more.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful & Touching.......2006-04-18

Words can't describe this beautiful little book, filled with beautiful little girls. I especially love the list of their names at the back, as they translate into English, things like Literary Excellence & Radiant Jade. The children do seem sad or at least suspicious of the photographer, and why not? It's probably not every day that some Westerner visits to take pictures. But there is mischief & hope in these little girls' faces, & just affirms my ambition for half my life to adopt from China.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars WATCH OUT-THIS AIN'T DOROTHY FROM KANSAS .......2007-06-21

Phillip Marlowe, Raymond Chandler's classic noir hard-boiled private detective forever literarily associated with Los Angeles and its means streets is right at home here in his search for the inevitable 'missing person'-this time-a missing brother being looked for by his sister from Kansas. But she ain't no Dorothy and the plot thickens from there. There is plenty of sparse but functional dialogue, physical action and a couple of plot twists, particularly as we get a glance at the seedy side of those above-mentioned mean streets of Los Angeles. More so than earlier Marlowe adventures Chandler here gives his take on the changes in his former quiet little town of L.A. as a result of the double infusion of Hollywood hyp and war production during World war II. The gangsters naturally followed the money and the fame. Oh, and maybe came for the sun.

Marlowe is older and 'wiser' here but he still has that funny habit of tilting after windmills. He is at the beginning of a 'mid-life' crisis in this story. But what is a guy to do when there is a Hollywood movie star damsel in distress to rescue and the frame is on. And little Ms. Kansas is there to gum up the works. Besides he has cut a couple of corners in his pursuit of justice and the cops are mad. Damn, you know he has got to square things up. How does this this work with the other Marlowe volumes? Give me those background oil derricks churning out the Stearnwood wealth while looking for Rusty Regan in Big Sleep or the run down stucco flats in pursue of Moose's Velma in Farewell, My Lovely any day. Nevertheless here, as always with Chandler, you get high literature in a plebian package. Read on.

4 out of 5 stars Luxurious language in a languid tale of sibling death.......2007-03-08

Marlowe is on the prowl again, when the petite sibling of the title arrives at his dingy office with a crisp new twenty and a sob-story about a brother who has vanished. The holier-than-thou attitude and the pouting lips pique Marlowe's interest, and he soon finds himself looking for the truth among the sordid sorority of Hollywood elite. As always, Chander is the master of the poetic line and the brilliant image...the English language has never been served so well. The plot? Well, I must admit that I'm still a bit unclear about exactly what happened and why, however, I loved the book anyway. I know that Chandler is a "languager" not a "plotter," and I relish the words he chooses. A great book by an American master!

4 out of 5 stars ...a ballet dancer with a wooden leg.......2007-02-04

About 3 days ago I bought and read 'The Little Sister'(1949).

The plot is impenetratable, the narrative and dialogue are schizophrenic. The tone and attitude of the tale fluctuates between a pompous 50's puritanism, and an overtly misogynistic sexual bohemia, which 60 years later is comical.

But don't get me wrong, I loved it. Marlowe steps off the page and into your head. He is brought to life by Chandler's dexterous turn of phrase, and insightful observation, both of which are as unexpected, as they are delicious.

Chapter 22 pg 149 "I got up on my feet. I was as dizzy as dervish, as weak as a worn-out washer, as low as a badger's belly, as timid as a titmouse, and as unlikely to succeed as a ballet dancer with a wooden leg".

It's a damm fine book.

Incidentally it feels as if about a 1/4 of the book revolves around the lighting, smoking, and stubbing out of cigarettes; so if this book was written by the anti-tobbaco lobby it would be 60 pages shorter.

4 out of 5 stars a darker, more introspective, less likeable Chandler.......2006-12-27

I think this is the novel where Chandler started to take his press clippings seriously and tried to write an Important Book. While it's a very good book, the book feels like a lesser sequel to his previous four classic novels perhaps because it strays a little more from its pulp roots. In the earlier books, he showed us the seamy side of Los Angeles, and the characters demonstrated their basic corruption through their actions. There is some of that in this novel as well, but he also feels the need to tell us what Philip Marlowe actually thinks about your average person. "Tired men in dusty coupes and sedans winced and tightened their grip on the wheel and ploughed on north and west toward home and dinner, the whining of their spoiled children and the gabble of their silly wives." True, probably. Pleasant, no. Marlowe also occasionally indulges in self pity. A flawed hero is one thing; an unlikable one is something else altogether.

There's no leavening the unpleasantness as even Marlowe himself doesn't come off well. As misanthropic as Marlowe becomes in this novel, you wonder why he even bothers to do his Don Quixote thing. In this book, I think Chandler strays somewhat from his original concept of Marlowe, and the book suffers as a result. Still a good read, but far from classic.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but..........2006-10-25

not Chandler's best. The book was written during his wife's dying and death. Chandler could not bring himself to reread it, therefore some of the language oddities can be forgiven as well as character inconsistencies. There are terrific descriptions as usual, but motivation for the many violent things people do isn't apparent and in the end the bottom drops out. That said, you could do worse in the genre.

3 out of 5 stars Is Little House losing Laura?.......2002-09-27

I enjoyed reading this book. I think it is a sweet book for beginning readers, but definately lacking of the special essence that makes the little house books what they are. The author has taken some of the most memorable stories from Laura's books and gently adapted them for young readers today. The relationship between Laura and her two sisters is highlighted, which I believe is a wonderful thing for children today to be exposed to.The stories are still there, I won't deny that. However, I feel that as 'new versions' of the beloved little house books, the stories are being dumbed-down quite successfully! Who says Laura didn't write her books for beginning readers? By the time a child can read they can appreciate Laura's stories. I don't believe it is neccessary to adapt them at all. These new editions are bereft of many interesting coloquialisms of the day, and also Laura's own subtle magic woven into her words, which I am sure makes the plot more accessible, but takes away much of what makes the stories Laura's. I have loved to read of the Ingalls family since the age of six, and I still do, but I know that the reason I read them is not only for their adventures, but because of the Laura in every sentence. Please don't let's take Laura from Little House!

5 out of 5 stars This story is about Laura and Mary growing up together........1999-02-10

This is a great story about two girls named Mary and Laura they have a 1 year old sister named Carrie. They go to town and get all kinds of stuff they make Carrie a necklace made out of buttons. If I were you I would buy this book now!

3 out of 5 stars Nice version of Little House books for younger readers........1998-02-08

This is a good introduction to the Little House books appropriate for begining chapter book readers. This particular series is for children who are too old for the My First Little House Books, but not quite ready for the orriginals. But in my opionion, there are too many Little House adaptations (My First Little House Books, Little House Board Books, etc.) that are taking the orriginals and chopping them up into little pieces. And this book is rather brief, skipping from one event to another, and using stories from too many different books. But its still a nice story for younger readers.

...and I don't know why. (He doesn't seem to especially love his little brother, but he loves this book. Kidding. But they don't always get along very well.)

This book is a daydream of all the things the brothers will do together, just the two of them. Very sweet, adorable Mercer Mayer. I like this one much better than most of his other books. There's no sassiness in it.

I wish I could be specific about why this book is such a hit, but I can't figure it out.

4 out of 5 stars Just Me and My Little Brother.......2006-12-11

In the book "Just Me and My Little Brother" this time the young Critter is acknowledging his little brother a bit, and talks of him of all the great things they will accomplish in the future such as playing together, sharing rooms, and many other various activities.
He speaks of how well he will get along with him and what a great joy it shall be to have his little brother around.

4 out of 5 stars The missing little brother.......2006-01-22

As with all Little Critter books...this one had a wonderful story.
My boys are big fans of all the Little Critter books. We have a large collection and have watched Little Critter grow throughout the years. When I saw this book about Little Critter's little brother I was so pleased the family had another sibling to add to future stories. Unfortunately, we never heard from the Little Brother again. Was there a 'Just My Little Brother Who Died' book I missed?

4 out of 5 stars Just me and my little brother.......2005-12-10

I like this book because i love how he dreams of all these different things he can do with his little brother when he gets older. I was like that when i was littler too. And now i have a little brother too. And i love him so much. Im thankful to have him as a brother.

5 out of 5 stars "Just Me and My Little Sister.".......2003-10-03

"Just My Little Sister, and Me" is about a thing called the little critter. He has a selection of book. But this particular book is about "Little Critter" wanting to hang out with his little sister. So he takes her to the park because his mom is busy. After that he is having fun with his little sister even though it isn't particularly fun doing what he is doing but just because he is doing it with his sister he is having fun. I think this book is a good book. This book is good for the ages of 4~10. This book teaches kids not to take their siblings for granted.

Book Description

The illustrations for this series were created by Scott McKowen, who, with his wife Christina Poddubiuk, operates Punch & Judy Inc., a company specializing in design and illustration for theater and performing arts. Their projects often involve research into the visual aspects of historical settings and characters. Christina is a theater set and costume designer and contributed advice on the period clothing for the illustrations.

Scott created these drawings in scratchboard an engraving medium which evokes the look of popular art from the period of these stories. Scratchboard is an illustration board with a specifically prepared surface of hard white chalk. A thin layer of black ink is rolled over the surface, and lines are drawn by hand with a sharp knife by scraping through the ink layer to expose the white surface underneath. The finished drawings are then scanned and the color is added digitally.

The beautiful Meg, artistic tomboy Jo, doomed Beth, and selfish Amy: since the publication of Little Women in 1869, these four sisters have become America’s most beloved literary siblings. Louisa May Alcott’s rich and realistic portrait has inspired three movies and stirred the emotions of countless young girls. Set in New England during the Civil War, the novel follows the adventures of the March sisters as they struggle to pursue their dreams.

If you're looking for a copy of Little Women with lots of colorful illustrations don't buy this copy there are none.
If you're looking for a copy with extra information about the author don't buy this one there's only a very short paragraph at the end about Louisa May Alcott that comes after the 15 "book discussion" type questions that are not very useful to an independant reader.
I was not impressed with the wording of this Sterling Publishing edition of this beloved children's classic. I've read other editions of Little Women and don't remember the word don't being used so poorly throughout the novel as it was in this edition. Are these the original words of Louisa May Alcott or don't people know how to use proper English back in the 1860's?

This is one of my favorite books. I am an avid reader, and there are some books which I have read more than once, but when I think about them years - or even months - later, I cannot for the life of me remember some of the main charactors' names. It is not so with this book. I could not forget it, or stop loving it, no matter what!

1 out of 5 stars No Illustrations!!!! Advertising misleading.......2005-12-01

Sure the story is great (as it would be with any version) and this version does have the nice print and book mark, however, the advertising suggested to me, at least, that there would be several illustrations. There were none except silly chests with each little woman's name engraved on them at the start of each chapter.

Do not select this book if you are looking for an *illustrated* version. The Illustrated Junior Library version is well illustrated and at least as high quality a printing.

By the way, read the sales copy above to see how misleading it is. Just for that reason, consumers should eschew this version, and Amazon should have them change it.

FEMME FATALES

OBSESSIVE LOVE

DOUBLE CROSSES

How does a respectable young woman fall into Los Angeles' hard-boiled underworld?

Shadow-dodging through the glamorous world of 1950s Hollywood and its seedy flip side, Megan Abbott's debut, Die a Little, is a gem of the darkest hue. This ingenious twist on a classic noir tale tells the story of Lora King, a schoolteacher, and her brother Bill, a junior investigator with the district attorney's office. Lora's comfortable, suburban life is jarringly disrupted when Bill falls in love with a mysterious young woman named Alice Steele, a Hollywood wardrobe assistant with a murky past.

Made sisters by marriage but not by choice, the bond between Lora and Alice is marred by envy and mistrust. Spurred on by inconsistencies in Alice's personal history and possibly jealous of Alice's hold on her brother, Lora finds herself lured into the dark alleys and mean streets of seamy Los Angeles. Assuming the role of amateur detective, she uncovers a shadowy world of drugs, prostitution, and ultimately, murder.

Lora's fascination with Alice's "sins" increases in direct proportion to the escalation of her own relationship with Mike Standish, a charmingly amoral press agent who appears to know more about his old friend Alice than he reveals. The deeper Lora digs to uncover Alice's secrets, the more her own life begins to resemble Alice's sinister past -- and present.

Steeped in atmospheric suspense and voyeuristic appeal, Die a Little shines as a dark star among Hollywood lights.

5 out of 5 stars A stylish noir.......2007-08-26

Although I'm a big fan of noir films, this was my first noir novel. What a treat! Abbott's style has a dreamy, poetic quality, yet she manages to move the story forward at a rapid pace. All the characters are rich and complex, and the period details are great fun. I look forward to reading more of Abbott's work.

5 out of 5 stars Cerebral Retro-Noir .......2007-04-24

The storyline to this stylish noir set in 1954 is simple. Lora King, a Pasenda schoolteacher, lives with her younger brother Bill, one of the D.A.'s bright investigators. Their lives hum along until Alicia Steele, a costume designer for the Hollywood movie crowd, enters the picture. Alice steals Bill's heart and they wed. Lora, jealous and maternally protective, discovers Alicia's past is dark and pitted with sadistic boyfriends, narcotics usage, and possibly murder. As seen by others, Lora and Alice are companionable as "sisters", but looks are deceiving. The lush descriptions recreate the underbelly of Hollywood. But the contemplative and careful Lora narrating this lurid tale offers a noir where readers can observe as much going outside of as inside of the main character.

5 out of 5 stars A Velvet Punch of a Read.......2006-12-01

A heck of a debut, a heck of a book. These characters sparkle in dark glamour, the writing slides you into a lost time, a lost place. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars The dark side of Hollywood..........2005-04-11

This was a great read! One I had a very hard time putting down. Set in 1950's Hollywood, it explores the dark, twisted lives of high powered studio men, call girls, drugs and murder. Bill and Lora are siblings living in quiet suburbia in Pasadena. He's a cop and she's a school teacher. Then Bill meets vivacious Alice Steele when her car hits his. A friendship blossoms, and soon after a relationship. The two marry, buy a house, and settle into simple lives.

In the beginning all is well. Lora is happy for her brother and loves having sophisticated Alice around, who throws lavish neighborhood parties and is always in the spotlight. But soon Lora starts to notice little things that don't seem quite right. Dark edges around sweet Alice...who is Alice really, and where did she come from?

As Lora gets deeper and deeper into the trenches of shady Hollywood, she begins to realize that she's getting caught up in everything, she's beginning to change from the mundane schoolteacher into something else, something bad. Can she figure everything out before it's too late? I've gotta say I really recommend this book. I initially picked it up because of the era it's set in, but the story really grabbed me. Definitely give it a try...you won't be disappointed!

4 out of 5 stars A fun noir romp.......2005-03-22

The pages of this book fly by, filled with all the dark, dangerous, drugs and sex riffs from the 1950's. When you need something light and engrossing, this book is a "sinister" diversion.

OK, THE STORY IDEA OF THESE CREATURES BEING EATEN IS A LITTLE STRANGE, BUT YOU JUST NEED THE RIGHT SENSE OF HUMOR. THE PICTURES ARE REALLY GOOD & IT'S A VERY FUN BOOK. Do you want to eat five frogs? I read a book about a little girl that did. It is called My Little Sister Ate One Hare, Its author is Bill Grossman. This book is mostly about a little girl that eats everything like junk. She ate one hare. I like the book because it is funny. My favorite part is when she eats 10 peas. In the book the author is trying to tell us she won't eat healthy food. Read this book to see if she ever stops eating junk.

5 out of 5 stars School Book Review.......2005-03-04

Have you ever seen my younger sister eat 8 frogs? Well in the book My Little Sister Ate One Hare she did. The author is Bill Grossman. This guy's little sister ate tons of nasty things. This book is funny in some sorts of ways but mostly nasty that is what's cool about this book. The author tells you to never eat nasty things always eat good things. Read this book to find out if she eats ten peas.

5 out of 5 stars Five stars are not enough.......2005-09-01

I read Little Women when I was a Little Woman. I just recently decided to buy it for my daughter and read it again. What a classic! This is a must for anyone's reading list both male and female. The story chronicles the March family, in particular one of the daughters, Josephine March. It is a story of hope and love. This is not a love story of romance, but one of tender, unconditional love that exists in a family of a mother, father and four very different daughters. There are moral lessons throughout the book that are refreshing and the character of all the girls comes through vividly. Alcott does a wonderful job devloping the different personalities of her characters. There are lessons for young people written between the lines on strength, wisdom, love, patience and quiet service. Boys and girls alike will benefit from the examples of polished and refined manners. A beautifully wirtten story that well deserves the label of a Classic.
Just a note about this particular copy--We like to buy classics that are nicely bound and not cheap looking. I was a little hesitant to buy this online. I was pleasantly surprised when it came in the mail. It is nicely bound. The cover is hardcover cloth. The pages are not great quality but are sturdy and seem "old fashioned". It was a great value for the money and as well, looks good on the shelf. I am expecting it to hold up to lots of readings!

5 out of 5 stars From "Little Women" to "Good Wives".......2005-04-30

Louisa May Alcott wrote many books, but "Little Women" retains a special place in the heart of American literature. Her warmly realistic stories, sense of comedy and tragedy, and insights into human nature make the romance, humor and sweet stories of "Little Women" come alive.

The four March girls -- practical Meg, rambunctious Jo, sweet Beth and childish artist Amy -- live in genteel poverty with their mother Marmee; their father is away in the Civil War. Despite having little money, the girls keep their spirits up with writing, gardening, homemade plays, and the occasional romp with wealthier pals. Their pal, "poor little rich boy" Laurie, joins in and becomes their adoptive brother, as the girls deal with Meg's first romance, Beth's life-threatening illness, and fears for their father's safety.

The second half of the book opens with Meg's wedding (if not to the man of her dreams, then to the man she loves). Things rapidly go awry after the wedding, when Laurie admits his true feelings to Jo -- only to be rejected. Distraught, he leaves; Amy also leaves on a trip to Europe with a picky old relative. Despite the deterioration of Beth's health, Jo makes her way into a job as a governess, seeking to put her treasured writing into print -- and finds her destiny as well.

There's a clearly autobiographical tone to "Little Women." Not surprising -- the March girls really are like the girls next door. Alcott wrote them with flaws and strengths, and their misadventures -- like Amy's embarrassing problem with her huge lobster -- have the feeling of authenticity. How much of it is real? A passage late in the book portrays Alcott -- in the form of Jo -- "scribbling" down the book itself, and getting it published because it feels so real and true.

Sure, usually classics are hard to read. But "Little Women" is mainly daunting because of its length; the actual stories flow nicely and smoothly. Don't think it's just a book for teenage girls, either -- adults and boys can appreciate it as well. There's something for everyone: drama, romance, humor, sad and happy endings alike.

Alcott's writing itself is nicely detailed. While certain items are no longer in common use (what IS a charabanc anyway?), Alcott's stories themselves seem very fresh and could easily be seen in a modern home. And as nauseating as "heartwarming" stories sometimes are, these definitely qualify. Sometimes, especially in the beginning, Alcott is a bit too preachy and hamhanded. But her touch becomes defter as she writes on.

Jo is the quintessential tomboy, and the best character in the book: rough, gawky, fun-loving, impulsive, with a love of literature and a mouth that is slightly too big. Meg's love of luxury adds a flaw to the "perfect little homemaker" image, and Beth just avoids being shown as too saintly. Amy is an annoying little brat throughout much of the first half of the book, but by her teens she's almost as good as Jo.

"Little Women" is one of those rare classic novels that is still relevant, funny, fresh and heartbreaking today. Louisa May Alcott's best-known novel is a magnificent achievement.

4 out of 5 stars timeless classic.......2005-03-20

I finally read Little Women when I wa 23. When I was in junior high, my mom and grandmother recommended I read it, but it sounded so dorky and old fashioned that I never gave it a try. Even my best friend whom I considered "cool" told me how great it was, but I didn't believe her. I saw the 1998 movie when I was about 22 and that led me to finally read the book. I was surprised that the book was even better than the movie. I think this should be on teen's summer reading lists. Even though it was written a long time ago, it is definitely still relavant.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favourite books of all time.......2004-07-30

Little Women is about 4 sisters the oldest Meg, the tomboyish Jo,sweet Beth and little Amy. Through many things the girls never forget what is important, their family. The book progresses as the girls grow older and it is a great novel. My friends know I'm a fast reader but they took one look at it and told me that it looked so boring that they bet me it would take me weeks to finish. Boy were they surprized when I was on the first page a week later, they said "told yah so" and I said that they were wrong and I was rereading it! I became so ingrossed in it that they accutually let me tell them what it was about and they hate reading. They still haven't read it but thats their loss!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Writing.......2003-11-26

This book is fantastic. I first read it in fifth grade and it still brings tears to my eyes and a smile to my face every time I read it. It stars the March sisters; Jo a tom boy writer who scribbles away and is a strong willed free spirit, while Beth is a sweet girl who never says a mean word to anyone, Meg is the motherly oldest and Amy is the childish youngest who must be surrounded by pretty things. It is a very touching story where four young girls become young ladies and their interactions with eachother and society. It is an utterly splendid story :)
