Book Description

There are many books that discuss distillation, but there is only one that concentrates on giving readers practical guidelines for operation, troubleshooting and control. This is that book. Its contents revolves around over 300 actual case histories of distillation problems that occurred in the past. Each problem and its solution are briefly described, and the lessons learned are molded into the practical guidelines that make up the book. Carefully focused, the book shows you how over 90% of all column malfunctions occurred in the past, how they were solved, and how to prevent them in the future. Starting with column internals and their malfunctions, it progresses to installation, commissioning, startup and normal operation before surveying the auxiliary system and the column automatic controls--how they should be, how they can go wrong, and how you can repair them. This book offers the best available compendium of Do's and Don'ts, good practices, and guidelines for trouble-free design, operation and troubleshooting for inlets and outlets; distributors; avoiding tray damage; installation; commissioning and startup techniques; column flood and efficiency testing; pressure, temperature and boilup control; and many more.

4 out of 5 stars Good reference .......2007-06-01

I found this a very good reference on distillation, and a worthwhile resource on the PE exam. It however, as expected, assumes you understand interphase mass transfer and distillation theory.

5 out of 5 stars A must for people in any phase of distillation field.......2002-01-03

This is the more complete book on practical aspects of distillation and absorption. From design (together with the companion book Distillation Design) to startup and troubleshoot. The last subject is also covered by other books, relating to the subject himself, but on distillation and absorption columns this is the only book not out-of-print; note that it covers also mechanical aspects usually fund only on Best Prectices by Engineering and Contracting Company.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best of the series action, murder, and romance.......2005-09-22

I have to say this is one of the best of the series so far. The book has lots of action and romance. It's a faced pase book not like the last few books which have been slow. The story starts out with Matthew Kent, son of Jephtha Kent, is in Paris, pursuing the life of an artists. He is forced to leave the country after some incodents( I will not say you ahve to read). Then there is Dolly the women Jephta loves becomes pregnant and insists that they marry to avoid the stigma of bastardy for their child. There maragie dosent survivve do to many incodents. Gideon has an affair with his dead cousion's wife. Gideon's daughter Eleanor raped then she joines an acting group. This book is great and the second to last book. Now on to the last of the series.

4 out of 5 stars Murder,mayhem and rape !!.......2003-04-23

Matthew Kent, son of Jephtha Kent, is in Paris, happily pursuing the life of one of the new "bohemian" artists and befriending many of the new and promising artists of the time-Cezanne, Manet etc. and rather daringly having a live-in mistress. He becomes involved with a sadistic and violent agent of Bismarck (chancellor of Germany)and is forced to flee the country. Dolly, his mistress, becomes pregnant and insists that they marry to avoid the stigma of bastardy for their child.Their marriage doesn't survive so Dolly takes their son Thomas with her to India where she is employed as an English teacher.Matt returns to America briefly but decides that his future lies in Europe. Gideon makes an implacable enemy of millionaire businessman, Thomas Courtleigh who does all he can to destroy Gideon and his business by attacking his family, causing the death of his wife Margaret. On the same night, Gideon's daughter Eleanor is pack raped , causing irreparable damage to her self esteem. Eleanor leaves home at an early age, joining an acting troupe, and therebye relinquishing respectability as it was known in that era. After Margarets death Gideon is able to marry his longtime mistress, Julia Kent, widow of his cousin Louis and takes on the responsibility of her son Carter.

4 out of 5 stars A Kent Family success.......2003-03-05

One of the more successful Kent books. The sons of Jephtha Kent -- who is conveniently (and oh too quickly) killed off -- reap what they have sown. The lawless Kent of the title is Jeremiah, the gunslinger-gambler. Jakes cleverly manipulates other members of his cast to come in contact with Jeremiah without knowing who he is; first Julia on her suffragist tour of the Wild West, and then brother Gideon, with tragic results. The travails of Matthew Kent allow Jakes to explore nineteenth-century Paris, but the author is more successful detailing the great Chicago Fire of 1871 and early union uprisings than the Parisian bohemian art world. Gideon Kent's story takes up the bulk of the book: his wife's madness (which I have trouble buying, even though her father was a drunk and alcoholism is supposed to be hereditary), his affair with Julia, his estrangement from his children, his pro-union sympathies, and his conflict with the railroad giant Courtleigh. Gideon's descent into conservatism is less abrupt than Philip Kent's in The Seekers, and therefore more realistic, but equally annoying. The abrupt about-face by Dolly when she decides to leave Matthew seems out of character: I feel like Jakes is setting up her son Thomas to take part in raj activities in India for a future book never written. Eleanor the budding actress is also a believable character, but her last-minute reconciliation with Gideon is even less convincing. The Lawless has less in the way of canvas and sprawl than The Warriors (for instance), and Jakes seems to be truly interested in character development over episode, perhaps for the first time in the series. Unfortunately, none of the characters is as compelling as Amanda Kent in The Furies --and Jakes chooses to relegate the women to a secondary position.

Book Description

Turner's Rebellion took place in the long hot summer of 1831, in the state of Virginia. When it was over, 59 white people were dead; the insurgents were rounded up and either hanged or worse; and Nat Turner, a preacher, confessed to his part in the only effective revolt in the annals of American Negro slavery.

In his introduction of this Pulitzer Prize winner, Styron says "it has been my own intention to try to re-create a man and his era, and to produce a work that is less an historical novel in conventional terms than a meditation on history."

3 out of 5 stars Could have used a little editing .......2007-04-04

I didn't give this three stars because of the controversy around racism. It's historical fiction, fiction being the key word. And I didn't really pick up that tone from it at all. I thought it was an innovative retelling using what information we do know and filling in the blanks from there. The reason I gave it three stars is because it contained all sorts of things that I felt could have been cut from the book and it wouldn't have mattered. I almost gave up on it in the second section. I'm glad I finished it, but it was a little tough to keep interest in it.

5 out of 5 stars I loved this book........2007-02-08

I read this book for my book club and I thought it was beautifully written. It has stayed with me for weeks now. I love when a book does that. I'm glad I wasn't swayed by controversy. I had no problem with the fact that the author was white and using a black voice(maybe because I'm white - but I do like when an author gets the voice right and I thought Styron did that). I didn't understand the charges of racism after reading the book. Sometimes I wonder if, what some people find uncomfortable, they label as racist or sexist or whatever. Anyway, I would encourage everyone to read this book because it gave me a fresh awareness of a huge part of U.S. history, it reminded me that there are always gray areas to consider and it was a great novel. You might think so too.

4 out of 5 stars A NOVELISTIC TREATMENT OF NAT TURNER'S REBELLION .......2006-11-08

I came of political age during the civil rights struggle here in America in the early 1960's. Part and parcel with that awakening struggle came an increased interest in the roots of the black struggle, especially in slavery times. Such intellectuals as Herbert Apteker, the Genoveses, the Foners, Harold Cruise, James Baldwin, John Hope Franklin and others, black and white, were very interested in exploring or discovering a black resistance to the conditions of slavery not apparent on any then general reading of the black experience in America. This is the place where the recently deceased William Styron and his novelistic interpretation of one aspect of that struggle- Nat Turner's Virginia slave rebellion enters the fray.

No Styron is not politically correct in his appreciation of Turner or his followers. Nor are latter day Southern whites and their sympathizers who have recoiled in horror at what expansion of Turner's rebellion might have meant for the `peculiar institution'. But being politically correct, etc. now or historically is beside the point. Slavery was brutal. Slavery brutalized whole generations of black people for a very long time. If one expects nature's noblemen and women to come out of such a process, one will be very sadly mistaken. That the white benificaries of this system were brutalized is a given. Human progress has come about through fits and starts not a seamless curve onward and upward. Nevertheless all our sympathies are with Nat and his fellow rebels.

Moreover, here are some things to think about if you are not worried about your political correctness status. Outside of John Brown at Harper's Ferry Turner's rebellion represented the highest achievement of resistance to the white slaveholders in the early 19th century. Although the fight was not pretty on either side every progressive today should stand in historical solidarity with that fight. Then one will understand not only that oppression oppresses but also that the military conditions for a successful rebellion for isolated blacks in pre- Civil War American were slim. The later incorporation of 200,000 black soldiers and sailors among the Northern forces in the Civil War are a very, very profound argument that once off the plantation blacks were as capable of bravery, courage and honor as an other American. As difficult as it is, if you do not have access to the original chronicles of the Turner uprising, read this book to get a flavor of how hard the struggle for the abolition of slavery in this country was going to be.

5 out of 5 stars The Standard.......2006-08-25

For me, William Styron has written the standard from which to draw the historical novel. I say draw because an historical novel is just that; a novel. But even while the reader knows this, historical novels always seem to provoke some response framed by the light of a current outlook. This is ironic because the main attraction of historical novels (at least for me) is the escapist type pleasure that is found by immersing oneself in another world and time. This is the writer's accomplishment. William Styron does this in language and in pace so artfully that his book remains on my shelf. I keep 'The Confessions of Nat Turner' for its enjoyment and inspiration.

1 out of 5 stars The South Rises Again in all its Historically Inaccurate Glory.......2006-04-22

I originally wrote a review of this book in 1999, titled "This is a racist book disguised as a work of art." It seems that I didn't explain well enough my objection to Styron's co-opting of the story of a real human being, Nat Turner, whose story was more accurately depicted in the 1831 book, "The Confessions of Nat Turner," by T.R. Gray. Not only did Styron steal the title of Gray's book, in which Gray recounts his interview with the real Nat Turner, but the incidents Styron invents for the sake of drama reveal his southern-bred racism.

Unlike his depiction in Styron's book, Nat Turner was married. Styron's invention of Turner's pivotal and conflicted relationship with a white woman, Margaret Whitehead, is entirely fictional. So is any self-doubt that Turner did the right thing by leading the revolt. In Gray's account, Turner did not express regret. There is so much more depth to Turner's life that is either fictionalized beyond recognition or left unexplored in this book.

Do those facts make a difference in a work of fiction? Yes. The parts Styron has unnecessarily fictionalized are key to the story he invented. Turner's fictional relationship with Margaret is saturated in the southern myth that black men are obsessed with white women -- lusting for the forbidden fruit, for which they must die. That Styron crawls into Nat Turner's skin in order to infect him with self-doubt about his mission emasculates Turner and diminishes his cause. What offends me most is that Nat Turner's life deserves to be explored by a modern author who does not condescend or patronize this African-American hero. Instead, we have William Styron's version of Turner's life, taken by many readers as fact.

If one prefers racist fiction posing as a legitimate account of a life, then one might enjoy wallowing in this version of "Confessions." But if one prefers reality, I recommend Gray's book as well as other accounts available about the slave revolt at Southampton, Virginia. Styron's book does not provide significant insights into Nat Turner, slave revolt or slavery itself. His book clouds the truth with the same kind of Reconstruction era distortions that spawned the hideous phenomenon of lynching.

    Book Description

    Part Two Of Two Parts

Considered by contemporary critics to be Trollope's greatest novel, THE WAY WE LIVE NOW is a satire of the literary world of London in the 1870s and an indictment of the new power of speculative finance in English life. Having returned to England from the colonies in 1872, Trollope was distressed by the immorality and dishonesty he found. In a fever of indignation, he sat down to write. Nothing escaped his notice: politics, finance, the aristocracy, the literary world, gambling, sex, and so on. This is the tale of a great financier's fraudulent machinations in the railway business and his daughter's ill-use at the hands of a grasping lover. It is a literary classic - and a delightful read.

"Trollope did not write for posterity. He wrote for the day, the moment; but these are just the writers whom posterity is apt to put in its pocket." (Henry James)

5 out of 5 stars One of her best.......2007-03-29

I can't count the number of times I've reread this book and its companion piece, Gift of Fire. If you like strong characters, some paranormal activity, and a great romance, you have to read this one.

5 out of 5 stars Unforgettable pair of books.... a "must read".......2005-07-07

I wanted to write a review of this book, and its mate "Gift of Fire" because they are unforgettble.

I am not usually a "paranormal" type reader, I stumbled upon these two because I like the author so much, I wanted to read her earlier works. These two are perhaps her finest books.

The plot is unlike any I have ever read. The hero has a gift, which is sometimes more like a curse. That the heroine has the missing piece to his puzzle is interesting, and makes one think about soulmates and fate. The mystery is as good as it gets.

My advice, buy them together, because once youhave read the fist, you won't be able to stop until you have read the second as well. I only wish there had been more to follow.

5 out of 5 stars The Best JAK book written yet!.......2003-06-07

I have read almost every JAK book that she has written. I can say that I have enjoyed every contemporary romance she has written (I'm not too into the otherworld, futuristic ones). Her heroes are always believable but heroic. Her heroines are down-to-earth women. And of all the books I've read, this one is my absolute favorite. Those professional advertising reviews always state "you won't be able to put it down", but in this case, its true! I totally fell in love with Jonas and could easily imagine myself as Verity (I have red hair too!). And by the way... Make sure you read Gift of Fire after this one; it takes you through Verity and Jonas' next phase of their romance and keeps you "begging for more".

    5 out of 5 stars Another winner!.......2001-03-10

Highly recommend Gift of Fire and Gift of Gold.

1 out of 5 stars Definitely not Krentz's best work.......2000-08-26

If it weren't for the Renaissance story thread, I'd have tossed the book without finishing it (Jonas is a dishwasher with a PhD in history). In the beginning Verity lets Jonas force his way into her closed restaurant and gives him a job even though she is fearful and suspicious of him.

Jonas later shows up at a nearby spa where the owners let Verity use the hot tub after hours. Jonas joins her in the women-only facility, climbs in with her in his underwear, and starts fondling her. I've never run into another of Krentz's female characters that stupid. It does get better toward the end.

The sequel, Gift of Fire, is much better. The only reason I read it is that I bought the two books at the same time.

5 out of 5 stars What an Historical Novel Should Be: Absorbing.......2007-09-10

I took my dear sweet time reading this novel, and cherished every second. Historical fiction works, and works well, when it can be lingered over, savored; when it can be read, then re-read, as the author's glowing accounts of historical events come to life right off the page.

James Michener was a master of this craft; Edward Rutherfurd aptly keeps him company, as evidenced by his sweeping novel, SARUM. Set in the author's hometown of Salisbury, England, this is a novel that tells the rich history of the valley where five rivers meet. As seen through the eyes of members of five prominent families over thousands of years, the reader witnesses an astounding array of historical abundance: from the wondrous building of ancient stonehenge to the meticulous construction of the world-renowned Salisbury Cathedral; from the influence of the Romans to the bloody invasion of the Vikings; from feudal oppression to the horrific Black Death; from civil war to Renaissance; from industry to empire. Over and over, Rutherfurd tells a rich, compelling, absorbing account of the history of the Avon Valley--the history of England.

Unlike other readers, I was not particularly bothered by each family having its own inherent propensity for a certain skill, or behaviour. (For example, the Porters had an eye for detail and numbers; the Masons were inherently skilled craftsmen.) This device enables the author to maintain consistency. My only caveat is that, after a virtually breathless examination of countless centuries of events, the titanic happenings of the 20th Century are glossed over in only a handful of pages. But this, however, did not take away from my supreme enjoyment of this novel.

SARUM: THE NOVEL OF ENGLAND does what historical fiction is supposed to do: entertain and enlighten. I learned, and I learned a lot, having read this book. Highly recommended.

    1 out of 5 stars just awful.......2007-08-12

As a fan of authors like Michener, and well-written historical fiction, I found this book teeeeedious and boooooring. I have a real problem with books that read, "And then an event happened that changed their lives forever...." instead of just telling the story and surprising the reader with said event. The first few times it happened I was forgiving and kept on....but by the 16th or 17th time I was insulted and threw the book across the room. That's just bad storytelling in my book. :) This is one of the only books I have started and not finished....and I was a few hundred pages in. I have heard that the books by Alison Weir concerning British history (albeit later in the game) are beautifully written and historically accurate....we shall see! If you enjoy this book, more power to you. I just could not take it.

4 out of 5 stars A Fine Piece of Historical Storytelling.......2007-08-03

Sarum is the sweeping epic of England, a rich history that blends the ancient and the modern, beginning with the Ice Age 10,000 years ago and transporting the reader through the worlds of Stonehenge, the Black Death, the Industrial Age, World War II, and ending in modern times. It follows the fortunes of five families: Wilson, Godfrey, Shockley, Mason, and Porteus. Witness how changes in political, social, and economic climates affect these families and witness how the landscape is transformed over time. From the unspoiled land of the five rivers to the ritual and spiritual centers of Stonehenge and Salisbury Cathedral to the bustling commercial and industrial centers of the modern age, Rutherfurd interweaves history with fiction to create a seamless tale that will endure across the ages.

Though several chapters seem to drag with the story and characters, you can still learn a lot about the history of England -- many parts of the novel actually read like a history book -- and you will learn how the country arrived at its modern state. You will understand how the social climate changed dramatically with the coming of the Black Death and how the legislative system developed over time to make England unique. I particularly enjoyed the earlier chapters, those dealing with the Stone Age, the Roman occupation, the arrival of the Anglo-Saxons, and the medieval period, which included the construction of the famous Salisbury Cathedral. I felt the stories and characters were much more entertaining than those in part two of the book, "New Sarum." Despite the slow going of some of the chapters, Rutherford's impressive storytelling ability does not get lost in all the history.

Definitely worth the read. Rutherfurd seems to have done his research well, though as with all historical books, I'm sure there will be debate concerning the accuracies of various parts. It's a book you will want to read more than once, as much for the entertainment as for the history.

5 out of 5 stars 800 pages? Seemed like 25.......2007-05-17

That's what blows me away when I go to Europe - the rich sense of history and the lost day-to-day details. I kept flipping back to earlier chapters to remind myself of the evolution of the area, the buildings, and the families.

This isn't one of those "epic, generational" things where the paperback has all these faces on it and the back cover reads dramatically using words like "sweeping saga of history." It's just a generational, evolutionary, progression of family story lines that you can't put down!

The research is painstaking. Ummm - okay, a few places I skipped pages because it got to be too much like a history book, but nevertheless, it puts things rather eerily in perspective of just how much time has passed. I can't wait to read his book "London."

    4 out of 5 stars Sarum.......2007-05-12

This is a "Readers" book and is best enjoyed thru steady reading. Open your mind and go back to that time - accept it for when and what it was. The only way to truly enjoy a book (in my personal opinion) is to be able to put yourself there, at that time and in that place.

My husband and I made the trip from Portland, OR, for less than $400 with all of our frequent flier miles and Marriott Reward points. We loved the people and had a blast! Causey's book was instrumental in helping to plan the trip. It reduced the number of stores we visited significantly, and we were able to trust in the discounters that we visited. Here's my advice:

    1. If you don't know exactly what you want (ex: style of bedroom set), get the book and make the trip. We went to the After Market Sale in early May and just about everyone had a big sale. I can't understate the value of seeing so many pieces within a short time. We were able to quickly develop preferences for which styles, manufactures, and colors would work in our home. Our favorite place was the Hickory Furniture Mart - a great experience for those buying mid- to high-end furniture.
    2. If you already know exactly what manufacturer and collection you want (maybe you've seen something in your home town), get the book and call all of the listed discounters for quotes. The book has an index by manufacturer, so it's really simple and will pay for itself in the time you save. There are tons of discounters, so the book is needed to weed through the masses.

At the end of the day, the trip was well worth it. We found a perfect dining room set and bedroom set to meet our needs. We ended up buying Thomasville furniture due to their very unique, warm, and rich Cognac stain (fantastic sales team at the Hickory Furniture Mart: ask for Shana Bretzius and Randy Huffman). Seeing all of these pieces in person, we thought Thomasville was a clear standout.

We are ecstatic and couldn't have found such perfect furniture for us without making the trip. We also validated that in all cases, the DirectBuy prices are lower than the NC discounters, even when including the After Market Sales. Unfortunately for us, DirectBuy doesn't carry Thomasville (due to Thomasville's minimum retail pricing policy), and we decided the Thomasville furniture was the perfect fit for us. We did, however, get the minimum pricing + free shipping + free white glove delivery (they carry it in and set it up) to Portland, OR. And, a much better deal than our local stores!

4 out of 5 stars Saved thousands of dollars.......2004-01-20

I purchased a house recently and decided to replace almost all my furniture. I bought The Furniture Factory Outlet Guide for assistance. I saved literally over $10,000 using this book. My one recommendation to use this guide is to shop your local furniture stores, get the furniture manufacturer's name, the group name and/or number of the pieces you like. Then use the guide to call the stores listed in the guide that carry the furniture manufacturer you're looking for, and price shop, one against the other for the best deals. You really don't even have to go to NC, unless you want to spend a couple days looking and figuring out what furniture you like. Then go home and call the stores in this guide. Good luck and happy shopping.

5 out of 5 stars remember the college guides?.......2003-05-31

This one looks like one...every page has a different outlet, with information like location and telephone, hours, email, a brief description with very personalized comments from the author, directions on how to get there, and lists of manufacturers each outlet carries or does business with. It also has some photos of items you could find there and the great discounts offered. Too bad I don't live in the North Carolina area or I would be off every weekend going to every outlet. It's great for those who really want to save big money on furniture and accessories for the home. The book did mention 3 big warehouses in NC, which I already know about, but offered more info about them than what I already knew. If you plan on getting furniture, get the book, but first check if there is a copy in your local library instead of spending the money on the book. This is a guide you will probably use once every other year, or until you finish furnishing your home.

    Book Description

New Cosmic Horizons tells the extraordinary story of space-based astronomy since the Second World War. Starting with the launch of the V2 rocket in 1946, this book explores the triumphs of space experiments and spacecraft designs and the amazing astronomical results that they have produced. David Leverington examines the fascinating way in which the changing political imperatives of the United States, USSR/Russia and Western Europe have modified their space astronomy programs. He covers all major astronomy missions of the first fifty years of space research: the Soviet Sputnik and American Explorer projects, the subsequent race to the moon, solar and planetary missions, and the wonders of modern astrophysics culminating in the exciting results of the Hubble Space Telescope. Extensively illustrated, New Cosmic Horizons offers amateur and professional astronomers an unusual perspective on the history of astronomy in our time. David Leverington was Design Manager of the GEOS Spacecraft and Meteosat Program Manager for ESA in the 1970s. During his tenure as Engineering Director at British Aerospace in the 1980s, he was responsible for the Giotto spacecraft that intercepted Halley's comet, and the Photon Detector Assembly and solar arrays for the Hubble Space Telescope. He is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. He lives in Essex, England.

      Part Two Of Three Parts

Written on the brink of World War II, West's classic examination of the history, people, and politics of Yugoslavia illuminates a region that is once again the center of international concern. A magnificent blend of travel journal, cultural commentary and historical insight, it probes into the troubled history of the Balkans and the uneasy relationships among its ethnic groups. The landscape and people of Yugoslavia are brilliantly observed as Rebecca West untangles the tensions that rule the country's history as well as its daily life.

"A masterpieceas astonishing in its range, in the subtlety and power of its judgment, as it is brilliant in expression." (London Times)

      Book Description

RANDOM WINDS is an epochal saga about a family of physicians -- first Enoch, the dedicated country doctor; then Martin, his son, a brilliant neurosurgeon; and Claire, his flamboyant, unconventional daughter.

The story moves from a turn-of-the-century village in upstate New York to privileged estates outside London, from the bedsides of the rural poor to the frenetic emergency room of a New York hospital, from war-torn London to hideaways on the French Riviera. It tells of the trials and triumphs of a dynamic family struggling to hold its center, and of love beyond anyone's power to deny.

"Belva Plain creates vivid people and involves us with them. She is at the top of the novelist's profession." (B-O-T Editorial Review Board)

5 out of 5 stars The Inimitable Belva Plain.......2006-07-23

Once again, a fabulous read! Ms. Plain's choice of words, timing, descriptions, characters, plot create a book like no other. Truthfully, I feel that way about all of her books and every time I reluctantly finish reading, what I consider an all too short story, I'm repeating her praise.

The Doctors Farrell, father and daughter and grandfather are complex people. Pathetic Hazel and once pathetic, Jesse, the intriguing Mary Fern and all of the other characters are well thought out and hold your attention throughtout the story. You end up feeling like you've been an integral part of each and every character's life with it's successes, failures, heartache, disappointments, etc. Shouldn't a great novel involve the reader in more ways than one? This one certainly does!

      4 out of 5 stars Family conflict.......2006-04-20

Dr.Martin Farrell watched his father, also a doctor, work himself to an early death from the constant demands of his country practice, and so is determined to make his own medical career more lucrative. He becomes interested in brain surgery but to be able to afford to train as such, agrees to marry Jessie, the crippled sister of Fern, the woman he has always loved. The girls' wealthy father realizes that this is the only way that Jessie will be married and safe after his death and convinces Martin that this is the only path to his dream of becoming a top brain surgeon. They have a daughter, Claire, a pretty and clever girl who is set to follow in her father's footsteps. Martin and Jessie divorce after bitter fighting and Martin marries Hazel, a homely but good woman who gives him three more children. Martin's professional career grows and develops but he can't forget his love for Fern and this love, though never mentioned, eventually sours his marriage. Claire does become a doctor but prefers a practice more like that of her grandfather with closer contact with her patients. There are many dramas interwoven through this story of three generations of doctors with their personal loves and tragedies, and I found this to be one of those big, cosy reads which are just right when one is in the mood for it.

      4 out of 5 stars my review.......2000-04-18

Wonderful book. Once again Belva Plain brings forth, with beautiful detail, the complexities of life.

This book tells not only the story of three generations of doctors, but it is mainly the story of human souls. Whether you are a doctor or a painter, a decorator, or simply a housewife, you suffer and you rejoice with everything that life brings to you.

Belva Plain makes us understand, through her characters, that nothing in life is simple and straight. Or, black and white. But rather a web of events that moves us back and forth.

      Great book and good read.

5 out of 5 stars Another grand, romantic epic.......1998-12-02

Random Winds tells the story of one man's life, a doctor whose passionate love for another man's wife threatens the very foundations of his existance. This is one of those impossibly romantic novels one curls up with on a rainy day. Also, as a gay man who read this as a teenager, it was so important to me that Ms. Plain included a positive homosexual character; I've always been appreciative of that.
