If you had to summarize Fail-Safe Investing in three words, it would probably be these: Embrace the obvious. Look at your job, Browne advises. You get ahead because of your experience, education, and common sense. Your job is the reason you have money to invest in the first place. So the first of Browne's 17 rules is, "Build Your Wealth upon Your Career." Don't jeopardize your career; it's going to take many years of smart investing before your earnings will surpass what you earn at your day job--if they ever do.
The other rules aren't quite as obvious, but equally simple. Browne explains the difference between investing (making a long-term plan and sticking with it) and speculating (betting that you can beat the overall market during a specific period). He shows how life savings are easily lost when you borrow money to invest rather than investing only the money you already have. Browne also suggests a portfolio that he says is the simplest and safest possible for continual, steady returns above inflation: an equal division among stocks, bonds, gold, and cash. That covers an investor in times of prosperity (stocks), inflation (gold), deflation (bonds), and recession (cash). While many investment analysts would undoubtedly gag if you presented them with a portfolio that consisted of a 50 percent investment in gold and cash, Browne nonetheless makes a compelling argument that such an allocation makes it easier to sleep at night. And common sense tells you there are worse things than a good night's sleep. --Lou Schuler

Practical and Effective Financial Concepts.......2007-06-22
Every book written by Harry Browne is worthwhile, and this is no exception.
'Fail-Safe Investing: Lifelong Financial Security in 30 Minutes' should be required reading for anyone considering investing their funds with 'hot' fund managers, 'winning' advisory services or 'can't miss' trading systems. It also lays out a solid, common sense foundation for lifelong fiscal responsibility and profitability, and should be required reading for all high school students.
Harry passed away last year at the age of 73, and he will be dearly missed by those of us who treasure his legacy of liberty, independent thinking and personal responsibility. His life was a one of a kind gift that God blessed our world with.
A unique and worthwhile approach to long term passive investment.......2007-03-15
Harry Browne's Permanent Portfolio concept is worth knowing about, and an interesting counterpoint to Ibbotson-style long term asset allocation.
helpful advice.......2007-01-16
I learned some good, basic investing advice. I will be a lot more skeptical about supposed new ways to make money in the market. The plan is conservative but rightfully so considering the U.S. banking system and the U.S. dollar are based on fraud. The book gives explicit advice on how to execute the proposed plan.
cute little book.......2006-04-08
The value of this book is in the nuggets of wisdom it contains. He stresses the importance of diversifying and not trying to predict the future. As other reviewers have noted, his strategy is to put your assets into 4 categories, each of which can do well during a particular econonmic climate. Whether or not you buy into this strategy doesn't really affect the enjoyment of this book, as his real purpose here is to debunk myths and impart general wisdom. It's a short book, 150 pages or so, and can be read very quickly. I think the other reviewer who looked at 1993-2002 and concluded that Browne's ideas are way off misses the point. Browne's ideas are intended to work over a lifetime of investing, not a mere decade. Browne would likely argue that any one investment class can do well for a decade, but not your whole lifetime.
Why I thought this was a good book.......2005-10-11
If you follow his advice, you won't get rich. However, you will protect the purchasing power of your savings, no matter what happens to the markets. This book is for the person who wants to invest his/her money in such a way that you can simply leave it in those investments - with occasional adjustments when one part or another becomes too large a part of your portfolio - and then turn your energies to more interesting or useful pursuits. You essentially become independent of all the investment hullabaloo and can put all your concentration on your collection of cigar rings, or whatever suits your fancy. I agree with H L Mencken who said that the value of money is greatly overrated (with my addendum - as long as you don't have to worry about it).

Book Description
Something has gone wrong. A group of American bombers armed with nuclear weapons is streaking past the fail-safe point, beyond recall, and no one knows why. Their destination -- Moscow.
In a bomb shelter beneath the White House, the calm young president turns to his Russian translator and says, "I think we are ready to talk to Premier Kruschchev." Not far away, in the War Room at the Pentagon, the secretary of defense and his aides watch with growing anxiety as the luminous blips crawl across a huge screen map. High over the Bering Strait in a large Vindicator bomber, a colonel stares in disbelief at the attack code number on his fail-safe box and wonders if it could possibly be a mistake.
First published in 1962, when America was still reeling from the Cuban missle crisis, Fail-Safe reflects the apocalyptic attitude that pervaded society during the height of the Cold War, when disaster could have struck at any moment. As more countries develop nuclear capabilities and the potential for new enemies lurks on the horizon, Fail-Safe and its powerful issues continue to respond.

Pretty Freakin' Good.......2007-06-08
Some parts i felt were a little long, and just dialog, but the ending was a shock and the majority of the writing was really good.
There is also a movie that is pretty true to the story, so if you want an animated view, check it out as well.
Old Cold War novel still packs a punch.......2007-02-24
Fail Safe epitomized the dangers of the Cold War, and no less than Herman Kahn at the famous Hudson Institute think tank gave the novel's thesis even more credibility by predicting that every year there was a 2 percent chance of the U.S. and Soviet Union having a nuclear war. It was scary stuff, and as a young junior high student reading about the world for the first time, I ate it up, wondering if there was a future for the human race after all.
For many years, I was certain that the 35,000 nuclear weapons that the U.S. had built, along with the tens of thousands built by the Soviets at the height of the Cold War, were simply too impressive an arsenal not to lob at least a few of them at each other at some point, so no one was more surprised than I when nothing of the sort ever happened, not to mention the fact that the Cuban Missile crisis of 1962 was a harrowing recent memory for Americans. But fortunately the novel's prediction never occurred, but no book of the period surpassed Fail Safe's realistic portrayal of how such a catastrophic misshap might come to pass. Fail Safe was a taughtly written, tense, dramatic, and credible book that still packs a punch today, and who knows, maybe in an age of terrorism it might still turn out to be true some day after all?
By the way, Burdick was also the author of The Ugly American (not to be confused with Graham Greene's The Quiet American), a book whose central message about the dangers of cultural absolutism and cultural ignorance in the U.S. remain as valid as when the novel was published in 1958. This attitude continues to influence and drive U.S. foreign policy today, often with disastrous results, and the book is still worth reading for its cautionary message about the dangers of such ignorance.
Great Book.......2007-01-14
I used this book for a very small group of high schoolers to satisfy an American Lit requirement as well as to introduce an American History unit on The Cold War. Excellent piece of lit. and a book that the boys could really get their teeth into.
Readable, but just barely.......2006-12-30
The real thing? The best ever? You Amazon reviewers let me down again. I didn't mind that it was 44 yrs old and quite dated. Still, the authors didn't convince me they had even done their 1960's homework. Example: the authors always have military personnel pulling "levers," whether in the state-of-the-art war room, or the command bunker in DC. That's right, levers! To pull up Big Board displays? They also have the Vindicator bombers launching Bloodhound missiles which have remote-controlled thrust capabilities. The pilot asks his co-pilot, "How much more speed can you get from the Bloodhounds by putting them on fullblast?" Fullblast? Nice USAF lingo, right out of a kid's dime novel, or a 1950's Flash Gordon flick. And remote-control variable thrust missiles? Get real. The novel had import in its day solely because of its premise: that no system is perfect, and therefore accidental nuclear war IS possible. But its authors certainly couldn't be praised for their stilted prose or their obvious disdain for fact-checking and technical accuracy. Michael Crichton did a far more eloquent job explaining how even the most perfect system can fail in his description of chaos theory in Jurassic Park. And finally, the most unrealistic and unbelieveable gimmick was the ending, which I shall not spoil for you. You want a modern version of this novel? Eric L. Harry does a better job in his 1994 novel "Arc Light," which is technically more accurate, and reads better. Eric L. Harry's president even reminds me of crazy Howard Dean - HeeHaw! Imagine if he'd become president? Another option for you is Tom Clancy's "The Sum of All Fears." Clancy writes well, knows his history, takes time to do the technical research and fact-checking, and succeeds in creating a believeable scenario whereby a nuclear confrontation between the superpowers might come about. Ironically, the movie based on Fail Safe was better than the movie based on Clancy's novel. But Dr. Strangelove is still my favorite story of accidental nuclear war.
Gripping, Fast-Paced and Frightening.......2006-12-24
This 1962 thriller is one of the most frightening novels ever penned. The story grips the readers with tension and fear after the U.S. accidentally launches a nuclear strike against Moscow. Can the bombers be called back before it's too late? What happens if they get thru and destroy the Soviet capital? The story is set in the White House and Pentagon, and occurs in the space of a few short hours - from the launching of the bombers due to false alarm, to frantic but unanswered calls that they return to base, to their terrifying approach to the Soviet capital. Readers feel as if they are on the scene, and we see in stark terms how tragedy can result from a combination of mistrust, miscalculations, and technological errors.
This fast-reading thriller by Eugene Burdick (1918-65) and Harvey Wheeler (1918-2004) captures the tenure of the Cold War - it was published the same year as the Cuban missile crisis. FAIL SAFE was also made into a solid 1964 film starring Henry Fonda and Walter Mathau.

Mission and Vision: Defining it and articulating it.......2000-08-18
This book is a "must have" for all managers: young and old, mature and just beginning.
For new managers, the book contains essential guidelines for establishing a vision, communicating the mission, and securing buy-in of your team members. It will help the new manager communicate effectively and establish confidence with the team.
For the mature manager (read "aged" manager), this book augments your "home-grown" techniques with many new ideas. I found the book re-inforced my "home-grown" style and augmented it with new ideas.
A Must Read!.......2000-01-19
Once again Wolf Rinke provides readers with the necessary steps to succeed... this is the second book I have read of his. It is well written, easy to understand and follow... and perhaps most importantly - easy to implement so that gaining the highest performance becomes reality. A terrific book that provides straight forward guidance........1997-11-19
As a mid-level manager for one of the country's premier communication organizations (Motorola), I found Rinke's book invaluable. His approach to teaching and coaching blends with our culture beautifully. It leads you on a practical, common sense journey that can be implemented everyday and easily taught to your team members. "Winning Management" has now become a cornerstone of our philosophies...you can find it on the desk of most managers. Thank You, Wolf!

How to Pray for the Release of the Holy Spirit
ASIN: 8983140674 |
Book Description
In Christianity today, the most frequently discussed issues are "salvation from sin" and "the indwelling of the Holy Spirit." However, few people have precise knowledge of these two ideas, despite the fact that they are the two most important concepts in Christianity. What is worse, we can't find any biblical writing that teaches us clearly about the issues above. There have been lots of Christian authors glorifying the gifts of the Holy Spirit or describing the Spirit-filled lives. But any of them dares to deal with the fundamental question, "How can a believer surely receive the Holy Spirit?" Why? Surprising truth is that they couldn't write about it in full-scale because they didn't have exact knowledge of it. As Prophet Hosea cried out, "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge," nowadays, not a few Christians are drawn into religious fanaticism, hoping to receive the Holy Spirit. They believe that they will receive the Holy Spirit by reaching a state of ! frenzy and hysteria. But it is no exaggeration to say that their so-called faith reduces Christianity to mere shallow Shamanism, and that such fanaticism derives from Satan.
The author Rev. Paul C. Jong dares to proclaim the truth. He deals the essential subjects in full-scale, which most spiritual writers have evaded for a long time. He first defines the meaning of "being born again" and "the indwelling of the Holy Spirit," and explains the inevitable relationship between the two pivotal concepts. Then he runs the whole gamut of description concerning the Holy Spirit, from "how to discern the spirits" to "the way to Spirit-filled lives." For more information, the author advises you to examine the contents of this book posted on this web page.

A fail-safe way to sell a book.......2006-10-01
I was very disappointed with the contents in this book. After a cursory reading my first impulse was to throw it into the trash. However, out of
repect for God and the Holy Spirit I declined. The book is poorly written, redundant to a fault, and very rudimentary. It does not belong in a library of serious religious study. It does not challenge the reader nor engage the reader's mind. It's much too simple. It does not reflect the fruit of the spirit. Alas we cannot spin scripture to support our belief. Nor should we interject thoughts as biblical truths which are not scriptually based. "And if you receive the forgiveness of sin, then you will also recieve the Holy Spirit." This is not sound doctrine.
The Veil has "at last" been lifted on Satan's work........2005-09-10
Someone once made this statement, of all the books (excluding the Bible) written by various Authors in the Charismatic / Penticostal movement including others, the subject of the Holy Spirit and His mysterious work here on earth has become the absolute best seller.
I myself for years was caught up in this movement, where if you did not speak in tongues you were not filled with His Spirit, as we believed that this was proof / evidence of this infilling. Also all those "other Christians out there" who did not believe the way we did were in fact worshipping God in vain. How so self righteous.HOW DELUDED CAN YOU GET!
I have also read "many" books about this subject, as I was so hungry for more, and refer to a few authors mentioned in one "objectors" review hereunder (read them to), the truth is: the Authors of these books are in fact only spreading Satan's lies. Also people who read these books containing sermons of Rev. Paul Jong say all kinds of evil things because they still are not yet born again, and they compare these sermons to other so called great authors of this evil world.
I will never forget a statement made by one of my Lecturer's many years ago when he was explaining a mathematical problem to his students, he said, "never forget this: if 3+3=6; it does not matter who told you, how it was told and how many times it will be repeated, the answer will always be the correct one". So if you like these objectors find the Author mentioning the God given gospel of the water & the Spirit many times in these awesome books, remember it will always be the Truth.
Listen! will it not be better for you to re-examine your faith in God right now?, it will be to late when you hear those frightful words "Depart from me you workers of Lawlessness" (Matt 7:21-23).
People have for years misunderstood God's righteousness and were deluded by a mistaken faith, but now God is manifesting His Truth (gospel of the water and the Spirit) through his servants. We see many Christians today falling victim to the Devils work in his deceiving, deluding ways. In these books you will begin to see and have a clear understanding of the gospel of the water and the Spirit and believe in it with all your hearts.

Holy Spirit Gifts and Speaking in tongues.......2005-08-27
Dear Readers ,
Shalom Adonai !!!
I am so grateful to Pastor Paul C Jong and The New Life Mission
who provided precious Christian literature material at free of cost to all over the world.
Since 1995 I joined Calvary Pentecostal Seminary and graduated from this centre after three Diploma program .
In Speaking in tongues are not what today pentecostal and charismatic Christians doing Practice they are speak what even they could not understand .
" Paul Said I want to speak in other tongues I can speak tongues more than all of you " because he could understand what he will going to speak off and he can speak not only one languages but languages as many therefore
the Pentecostal and Charismatic doctrine of Speaking in tongues is ulimately false because they speak but their mind sleep and heart wandering here and there and they dont know what it is mean .
therefore Without remission of sins we just keep having Faith of Carnal thoughts and own Ideas let cutt of all roats of your Faith and re construct your faith in the Light of gospel of Water and the Spirit .
I believe you will also recieve Gifts of Holy spirit and Holy spirit will dwell in your heart until Jesus come to this earth again .
because Holy Spirit cannot dwell in the Sinful heart where all sin seed are dwelt first we need to kick off sins of our heart with the True Gospel then we surely recieve the forgiveness of sins .
God Bless you ,
I
Holy Spirit - speaking in tongues.......2004-01-17
The author repeats himself ALOT in this book and it could be half the size. I believe in most of what he writes and I AM a Christian who has been saved by the Grace of God. I have been led by God to research the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and the Gifts that go along with it. I have been researching for about 4 months now.
I do NOT agree with Paul C. Jong when he writes on page 242 #8 "He should therfore abstain from speaking in tongues." He is referencing 1 Corinthians 14:19 PLEASE fellow believers who seek the Baptism, read the verse right before this one. Verse 18 says "I THANK GOD THAT I SPEAK IN TONGUES MORE THAN ALL OF YOU." At this point, in my research, I truly believe that God wants all believers to be Baptized with his Holy Spirit and to receive the gifts he has for us.
I don't want anyone who reads this book to miss out on the gifts God has for us believers. Please keep that in mind when reading this book and don't let satan scare you. God has lead me to write this review. I don't normally take the time.
Two great books I would recommend over this one are:
#1Seven Vital Steps to Receiving the Holy Spirit by Kenneth Hagan
This one is a quick read.
#2Filled with the Spirit by Joyce Meyer
Joyce also has a great video out call Receiving the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.
I think Mr. Jong is alittle narrow minded on the subject of speaking in tongues and I am praying for him.
Blessings to all of you. :-)
Quotes from Bible.......2002-07-08
I have been reading the book A Fail Safe Way for you to Receive the Holy Spirit. It is really interesting. I just want to point out a scripture out,Revalations 1:5 and from Jesus Christ who is the faithful witess and the first begotten of the dead and the prince of Kings of the earth unto him that loved us and washed us from sins in his own blood. The book that I am reading say that by believing that John baptized Jesus, your sins were passed on to Him and that His blood was the judgement and forgiveness for all your sins, Then you will receive the Holy Spirit. So this books an the others I would recommend to all.
