An excellent resource to strengthen the Body of Christ and identify potential pitfalls. It is short, quick, easy....right to the point. A definite referral!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A key dysfunction in the Body of Christ.......2007-07-26

I am of the opinion that every person who calls themselves a Christian, would do well to read and practice what they find in this little book. It is my belief that the points and issues covered here are at the heart of a huge portion of dysfunction in the Body of Christ and in relationships in general... a spirit of judgment and unforgiveness that is destroying the witness of Who Jesus REALLY Is by those who name His Name and are identified as His followers.

If you are looking for information about the "jezebel spirit," read this book too! I believe this subject is one reason the "jezebel spirit" is running amok all-but-unchallenged today, and that the practice of the principals taught here would go a long way to disempowering that... all by itself.

This is powerful teaching that I believe will be become more and more critical as the End Days draw closer and closer... lots of meat in a very small book... worth more than ten times its cost!

5 out of 5 stars Exposing the Accuser of the Brethren book.......2007-07-15

This book should be required reading for every person who sits in a church congregation. It has an inspiring and impacting message for believers. I believe this book was written under the annointing of the Holy Spirit and the message is so timely.

5 out of 5 stars Gut level encounter with yourself........2006-12-17

This is an excellent summary, 50 some pages, exposing the behaviors we blindly accept in ourselves and others. It allows you to stop and see what you're doing and allowing others to do. It exposes the wickedness of our "normal" behavior that the enemy has seduced us into accepting. If you're willing to see yourself and want to be more Christ-like get this and read it. If you want to just smile and sleep through the spiritual battle then you won't want this, it will awaken you. Christianity in work boots. Let's get to work dying to self and letting Christ live in us and through us.
God Bless You,
Rick

5 out of 5 stars Insights regarding the workings of slander and evil-speaking.......2003-11-26

This is a very helpful book/booklet for all pastors and
Christian workers who are interested in how to identify
and deal with the often subtle (and very evil) spirits
which can influence people to strife, offense, and slander.
Pastor Francis Frangipane has written a number of useful
and powerful books on spiritual warfare and overcoming
demonic influences among Christians. This is one of his
best. Highly recommended for those who are spiritually
aware of how "the Accuser of the Brethren" can bring
hurt, division, and strife among churches, families, and
nearly all relationships inside and outside the Christian
community.

Book Description

The 15th novel in the acclaimed Marcus Didius Falco series finds the first century sleuth confronting Roman legal forces that may just destroy him--and his family.

Fresh from his trip to far-flung Londinium in Britain, Marcus Didius Falco needs to re-establish his presence in Rome. A minor role in the trial of a senator entangles him in the machinations of two powerful lawyers at the top of their trade. The senator is convicted but then dies, apparently by suicide. It may have been a legal move to protect his heirs, but Falco is hired to prove it was murder. As Falco shows off his talents in the role of advocate, he exposes himself to a tangle of upper-class secrets and powerful elements in Romes legal hierarchy that may have consequences he hadnt quite bargained for.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Falco, the Legal Eagle.......2006-10-04

This is the fifteenth novel in the mystery series featuring Marcus Didius Falco, an informer and sleuth in Rome at the time of Vespasian. A series of books that have become hugely popular, so much so that the author is now at the forefront of historical mystery writers. It was probably a stroke of genius on her part to have novels that are extremely well researched and contain all the elements that would be and should be found in the Roman world of circa AD70, but to have a lead character who has the vocabulary of a present day New York cop.

After spending more time than he intended to in Britain (The Jupiter Myth) Falco is back in his beloved Rome. In theory he is still an informer for the Emperor although the less he sees of the Imperial family, the better he will like it. He becomes embroiled in a dispute between two high successful members of the legal profession and of course the dispsute ends up in a death.

Hired to prove that the senator's death was not suicide, Falco find himself following a trail of scanal, blackmail and corruption, the like of which even he has rarely seen. Has he bitten off more than he can chew this time. After all he is playing with the big boys now . . .

2 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing.......2005-10-13

Because the writing is literate, I would have rated this book a "3" but for my high expectations when I began reading it. I've reviewed Lindsey Davis' FALCO mysteries before, and always rated them highly--something they deserved--for local color, human interest, scholarship, wit, and unusually good writing.

This one goes nowhere. It's plodding, devoid of Falco's usual mental and physical exertions. There's little if any character development except that Helena's brother Aelianus seems to be maturing and mellowing. Falco is acted upon, rather than being his usual competent and courageous self, someone who controls the denouement of the plot. He makes an inordinate number of errors and bad judgments. His actions turn to dust, and at the end nothing really has changed except that a sour widow has unnecessarily died.

The humor in all the others is missing here; instead there's a deep cynicism. I'm sure Davis will hit her stride again, but this is the least important novel in the series.

5 out of 5 stars Courtroom drama.......2005-02-14

Ah, it's wonderful to be back in sunny, familiar ancient Rome again, after the last two Davis books where we've been "exiled" to bleak and blustery Britain. Here, murder is again subtle and surrounded by the power plays of the rich and elegant rather than the muddy connivings of barbarians. The historical (textual) richness of Rome is given full play to produce one of Davis' best stories of Falco, informer to the emperor.

In Falco's hobnailed boots, you'll cross and recross Rome (there are handy maps), from dives to courts (not much difference there!, Davis would say), ferret out recalcitrant witnesses and suspects, smell the stench of corpses, suborn informants, suffer goon attacks, fence with devious lawyers, loose your shirt, and be rescued by smart wife Helena--and not just once. Davis leads off with unusually rough language for her. There are delicious ironies scattered through the story: the guilty getting off, the implication of innocents, the unscrupulous rewarded, foul murder excused, rich scions bankrupted--ah, the Roman Forum at work to maintain Senatorial probity.

This story enters deeply into the snares of patriarchical Roman inheritance law. Unsuspecting Falco takes an involved family case of inheritance, suicide, and malfeasance, ranged against two far cleverer and wilier lawyers. Suitably, Davis has a striking change of style for this book. She adds the apparatus of law and deposition to Falco's usual investigations into the underworld or seamy side of Rome. Several times Davis merely summarizes on wax tablets (uh, casebooks) the results of the endless background interviews by Falco and Associates, rather than bore us to tears. Then she presents the entire speeches made before the judge. They read like actual speeches by an advocate like Cicero, full of flourishes and clever rhetorical devices, to insinuate scandalous guilt in the absence of real evidence. What makes this a 5-star story is the ending, one surprise after another, and still more twists follow. (One hint: keep track of the little children.) Superb.

4 out of 5 stars Intrigue in ancient Rome.......2004-11-26

Lindsey Davis' imaginatively conceived "The Accusers" is an historical fiction set in 75 A.D. Rome following the exploits of her protagonist Marcus Didius Falco. Falco is employed as an informer, the Roman equivalent of a modern day detective. Of equestrian rank, a middle class sature, Falco has been gone from Rome for 6 months and has returned seeking work. He has been summoned by Silius Italicus, a rich and storied informer to perform some investigating.

Italicus had presided over a trial involving senator Rubirius Metellus. Metellus had been convicted of corruption in meting out patronage. The penalty for this conviction was a million and a quarter serterces of which Silius Italicus was to garner the lion's share. Unfortunately for Italicus, Metellus' apparently planned suicide served to protect the family finances and deprive Silius Italicus of his considerable fee. Falco was to investigate the circumstances of the questionable suicide, trying to prove murder instead.

Falco was ably aided by his clear thinking wife, Helena Justina, daughter of a Roman senator and her younger brothers Justinus and Aelianus. Together they formed a formidible team that plodded through all the nuances of Roman law and Metellus family machinations to unravel the circumstances behind Metellus' death.

Davis creates an impressive representation of Roman life complete with maps and genealogic trees. The story however has too many dull moments which serves drag its pace.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Mystery of Ancient Rome!.......2004-11-26

I seldom read fiction but I make exceptions for some science fiction and very rarely mysteries (my wife is an avid mystery reader and so I get my pick). In these genres I only read works by authors whom I consider to be good writers and that fit my interests in history and science. I realize that this may sound a bit high-handed and arrogant, but I only have a limited amount of time for recreational reading and so have to pick and choose. Lindsey Davis is one of those authors that always fits my standards. Anything written by her is sure to be a good read and is always thought provoking.

In her recent book (2003) "The Accusers" she has not disappointed me. Her knowledge of the culture of ancient Rome of Vespasian's time is astounding, at least as far as I can tell. The informer Marcus Didius Falco, his indomitable patrician wife Helena Justina, their various relatives, associates and enemies round out a group worthy of a Russian novel.

In "The Accusers" a Roman citizen, beset with legal problems, apparently commits suicide at the urging of his wife and possible collusion of his daughter (suicide would cut back on the liability of the family and save the family fortune, which in another twist has been left not to the man's wife, but to his daughter-in-law!) As it becomes evident that the death was murder, his son Negrinus becomes an easy target of those would profit by the murder. Falco and Associates (Falco's wife and her two brothers are the staff) take on the defense of Negrinus (also known as "Birdy"), who they realize is hiding something. As one might suspect, that secret is the key to the death of the father. By the time you read a few pages you are hooked and want to read more.

For me this is the best of mystery writing. I recommend it heartily.

Book Description

Before 1967, Israel had the overwhelming support of world opinion. So long as Israel's existence was in harmony with politically correct assumptions, it was supported, or at least accepted, by the majority of "progressive" Jews, especially in the wake of the Holocaust. This is no longer the case. The Jewish Divide Over Israel explains the role played by prominent Jews in turning Israel into an isolated pariah nation.

After their catastrophic defeat in 1967, Arab regimes overcame inferiority on the battlefield with superiority in the war of ideas. Their English-language propaganda stopped trumpeting their desire to eradicate Israel. Instead, in a calculated appeal to liberals and radicals, they redefined their war of aggression against the Jews as a struggle for the liberation of Palestinian Arabs. The tenacity of Arabs' rejection of Israel and their relentless campaign - in schools, universities, churches, professional organizations, and, above all, the news media - to destroy Israel's moral image had the desired impact. Many Jewish liberals became desperate to escape from the shadow of Israel's alleged misdeeds and found a way to do so by joining other members of the left in blaming Israeli sins for Arab violence.

Today, Jewish "progressives" rationalize violence against the innocent as resistance to the oppressor, excuse Arab extremism as the frustration of a wronged party, and redefine eliminationist rhetoric and physical assaults against Jews as "criticism of Israeli policy." Israel's Jewish accusers have played a crucial and disproportionate role in the current upsurge of antisemitism precisely because they speak as Jews. Eager to evade the "moral taint" of justifying Israel's right to self-defense, Israel's Jewish accusers find themselves, in an age of suicide bombers, complicit in the murder of their fellow Jews.

The essays in this book seek to understand and throw back the assault on Israel led by such Jewish liberals and radicals as Noam Chomsky, Israel Shahak, Norman Finkelstein, Tony Judt, George Steiner, Daniel Boyarin, Marc Ellis, Seymour Hersh, and many others. Its writers demonstrate that the foundation of the state of Israel, far from being the primal sin alleged by its accusers, was one of the few redeeming events in a century of blood and shame.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A terrific collection of articles.......2006-04-10

There's already an excellent review of this fine book on this site (by Shalom Freedman). But I'd still like to add a few words of my own.

There are more than a few Jews who attack Israel. Are they "self-hating Jews?" Are they traitors? Well, some folks who oppose Israel, Jewish or not, are clearly under no obligation to defend it. If they side with those who would destroy it, they are not traitors, just enemies of Israel. In many cases, I would not bother to regard them as Jews. It is true that some of them are clearly embarrassed by the existence of Israel, but even that does not get me to think of them as Jews unless they show some genuine support for the human rights of Jews. Of course, what I think about this doesn't make much difference. The Jews are the ones who need to decide who they think are Jews, and they are the ones who need to decide what to think of the fact that many anti-Zionists boast about those who advertise themselves as Jews who oppose Israel.

Some actual patriots sincerely recommend surrender to one's enemies, on the grounds that fighting will likely result in obliteration while surrender gives a much greater chance for survival. In World War Two, Jews who tried this generally got killed, and for this reason, this idea has merited less respect since then. But if Jews sincerely recommended this strategy, I'd still think of them as Jews (I think I'd regard them as Jewish even if they made the absurd and immoral recommendation to, um, get rid of all Jews, on the grounds that this would end actual oppression of Jews once and for all...by the way, some of the Jews mentioned in this book come pretty close to advising this).

How do we tell if one is going over the line and betraying one's people rather than simply being moral? Well, an editor of this book, Edward Alexander has a simple test. Do you demand the same rights for you and your group that you demand for others? If you refuse to do that, you flunk his test and are being counterproductive by giving too much support for your enemies.

Still, according to the editors in the introduction to this book, "'cowardice' is the word that springs to mind most often as the suitable epithet for Israel's Jewish enemies." I agree. These Jewish accusers of Israel are generally taking some easy and immoral shots against truth, justice, human rights, and peace. They're rarely paying much of a price for this. And it is annoying to hear some of them praised for their courage.

After the introduction, there are seventeen superb articles. And they expose some of the hostility towards Israel by some of the anti-Israeli, um, cowards. But that's not the aspect of this book that I find most interesting. I'm not all that interested in tribal wars. But I am interested in truth, justice, and human rights. That's why my focus in reading this book was to witness the extent to which many of the opponents of Israel are amazingly dishonest and arbitrary. For example, Michael Neumann is quoted as saying that if an "effective strategy" means "the destruction of the state of Israel" he doesn't care. And that "to regard the shedding of Jewish blood as a world-shattering calamity...is racism, pure and simple, the valuing of one race's blood over all others." That's an eye-opener. I think those Germans who were put on trial after World War Two would have loved that argument, as it would have given moral justification for the genocide they perpetrated. Later, we see Neumann make the absurd argument that the purpose of Zionism is not to provide a refuge for Jews but simply to wage a race war in order to embark on "genocide" against the Levantine Arabs!

Of course, Neumann's claims are preposterous. But even so, I feel that even his lies do not necessarily support his conclusions. Suppose it really would be better for your enemies if you and your family were to be murdered, robbed, and slandered. Would it be best for you to allow this to happen, and to refuse to fight for your lives, property, and honor? It would depend on the circumstances, but the answer might well be no.

Edward Alexander makes quite a few good points. For example, he suggests that a good response by West Bank settlers to David Grossman would be "my dear fellow, we will imagine ourselves as Arabs if you will imagine yourself as a Jew."

Other articles discuss in detail some counterproductive writings by George Steiner, Tony Judt, Noam Chomsky, Israel Shahak, Tanya Reinhart, Norman G. Finkelstein, Peter Novick, Daniel Boyarin, Marc Ellis, Judith Butler, Martin Jay, Jerome Segal, Thomas Friedman, Seymour Hersh, and Benny Morris. It says on the back flap of this book that these articles "seek to understand and throw back the assault on Israel led by" these folks and that the writers "demonstrate that the foundation of the state of Israel, far from being the primal sin alleged by its accusers, was one of the few redeeming events in a century of blood and shame." I agree. And I very highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars An important analysis of an extremely sad phenomenom .......2006-04-07

This book is a collection of essays in which the phenomenom of Jewish self- hatred most particularly in the form of hatred of the Jewish state is analyzed and to a degree explained. It deals with many of the most well- known haters, including Chomsky, Tanya Reinhart, Norman Finkelstein, Israel Shahak, Daniel Boyarin , Jacqueline Rose, Joel Beinin, Michael Neumann(Canada), and others.
In the opening essay Alvin Rosenfeld considers how important a part 'shame' plays in these intellectuals life, how many of them feel the need to 'apologize' for imaginary crimes of the state of Israel. The book goes on to chronicle some of the most amazing and remarkable actions of hypocrisy, and moral idiocy of the modern era. Imagine the kind of prevarications which a Jew must go through to defend as many of these haters do, Palestinian Arab suicide bombers who deliberately kill women and children, just because they are Jewish.
This book exposes a great deal of biased and inaccurate thought about Israel and its history. However it also signals a very worrisome phenomenom and trend which must be contended with as openly and vociferously as possible, especially on the university campus where many of these 'Jewish Anti- Semites' have prestige and power.
This book is recommended highly to all those who care about Israel and the Jewish people.
It also provides a great deal of information which I believe would be excellent material for psychologists interesting in understanding the form of self- hatred , which focuses not upon oneself as individual but upon the collective, religious , national, ethnic to which one ostensibly belongs.

      Book Description

Media relations are not just for the rich and famous. Mackenzie takes readers behind the scenes of high-profile cases in which men, women, and even children were thrust into the spotlight--many because they were victims of unwarranted prosecution by the justice system and inaccurate depiction by the press. With media-savvy guidance from Mackenzie, these people and their lawyers successfully challenged the prejudiced portraits that police and prosecutors tried to present. In this book, Mackenzie also weighs in on celebrity cases, analyzing how they and their lawyers used the media to their advantage, or how they failed to do so. Mackenzie is a consummate expert in the use of media relations in the court of law. Her conviction that a right to demand a fair portrayal by the press must not be reserved for the prosecution or the wealthy has propelled her career as she has fought for the falsely accused, the unjustly portrayed, and their families. The media coverage of suspects or defendants by CNN, the nightly news, the New York Times, or the local paper affects the court of public opinion, even before their trials, and is often as important as what happens in front of a judge or jury. Private industry and corporations have long used media consultants. Prosecutors have public information officers to advise their lawyers. To level the playing field, all lawyers need to be ready to represent their clients before the media as well as the jury. Not only can this be done ethically, but as Mackenzie shows in this book, given what defendants are up against today, it may be unethical to ignore the media when the other side is using every possible opportunity to advance their portrayal of the accused or the victim.

5 out of 5 stars Getting the message to the media.......2007-06-10

      Law, public relations
Margaret Mackenzie's "Courting the Media" is a book defense lawyers will read for information on how best to present their clients. It's also a book for the lay person who wonders why some of the accused fare better with judge and jury than others, though the crime may have been the same. Public relations specialist Mackenzie has carved out an unusual niche; she works with renowned and successful lawyers to offset the wall of accusations that can descend before the accused has the chance to present an explanation. All too often, a sensationalist media will fall on a case with fangs drawn, making judgments -- or at least influencing public opinion -- before all the facts are in. It's her job to temper the onslaught of second-guessers with mitigating factors and fresh information for which she has dug deep with the instincts of a Sam Spade.

Mackenzie's book highlights her experiences in cases of national importance. "Courting the Media" is written in an easy, readable style which will satisfy the law profession with its tone and topic, while letting the general reader in on information that usually is the bailiwick only of professionals.

"Jenks' poetry achieves its textual striation on the level of tone by shifting between narrative and sound-based passages, as well as between stretched-out lyrical sections and jagged, cutting lines."-Joel Bettridge

This sophomore effort from Jenks expands on the disjointed lyrics of On the Cave You Live In by moving further into equal mixtures of social critique and sonic pattern.

Philip Jenks grew up in West Virginia. He completed a master's degree in creative writing at Boston University, and his ongoing engagement with Appalachian culture and politics led him to the University of Kentucky, where he worked at the Appalachian Center. In 2002, Jenks received his doctorate in political science. He is currently an assistant professor and freshman inquiry coordinator at Portland State University.

      5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2005-09-12

I'm not a poet, so I feel hesitant at the thought of critiquing Philip Jenks' poetry. I know very little about poetic forms, linguistics, and the influences that may have played a part in the creation of "My First Painting will be 'The Accuser'". I am, however, quite talented at critiquing myself and the way a piece of writing makes me feel. While I am not a poet, Jenks' beautiful lines helped me discover the little poet hiding in the dark corners of my soul. "My First Painting will be 'The Accuser'" is quite different from Jenks' previous book, "On the Cave You Live In", in that the lines pack enough intensity to cement you to your seat, "forcing" you to 'unpack' the meaning for hours. If you enjoyed "On the Cave You Live In", Jenks' most recent offering will definitely be of interest to you; while it is different, this book has Jenks' signature style (simply unmistakable!) all over it. "My First Painting will be 'The Accuser'" is a somewhat darker collection of poems, but from my humble position as a reader, this book shows strong improvement from his previous book: the poems are tighter and more powerful. Philip Jenks' book leaves such a moving, lasting impression that I feel I have done its brilliance an injustice with this inadequate review. Then again, it IS difficult to articulate how incredible this book is when it leaves me nothing short of breathless.

FINALLY, again we are treated to reading something that refuses boundary, refutes this or that camp and at the end of the day, will stand (refusingly) among the Olsens and the Spicers and the Steins and the Barakas of days past. the author here seems to eschew the polemical without walking away from the vitality of the political as a way of being in the world.

5 out of 5 stars I thought this book was amazing..........2006-06-27

I really, really enjoyed this book. It wasn't at all what I expected. What I was expecting was a book on overcoming satan's accusations and condemnation, I think. Rather, this was more of a big picture book (or booklet, it's very short at just over 60 pages) that helped explain how until men's hearts are changed, all of the human doing and protesting and law changing in the world won't do any good, if anything, they will bring about more evil.

Rick Joyner discusses in the first chapter the German city of Cologne and how much wickedness has come out of this city (he also touches on some of the good that has come out of it). By showing parallels between the wickedness of the crusades (which, as he rightly pointed out in my case, is something that Christians don't want to learn more about since it brings about feelings of anxiety and guilt), and how apparent victory in man's eyes can often lead to horribly miserable failures in God's eyes, my eyes were really opened to what true spiritual authority is.

Joyner points out, for example, that if abortion is made illegal without men's hearts changing to realize the what an atrocity abortion is, more bloodshed will occur. Without revival, all of our efforts will at best come to naught, and at worst plant things that are more wicked than what they replaced.

      I highly recommend. :)

      Hi;

I read this book a while back and much other material related to the Accuser of the Brethren. I found it to be right on the mark and a great deal of help. Rick's entire Overcoming series is very good and covers many of the common problems we have as Christians.

Many of Rick's books have greatly helped me to identify, pray into, and gradually overcome these issues in my life. Of course, we are all a work in progress!!

Highly recommended if you need help in this area. Marvin Miller

      2 out of 5 stars Not Joyner's Best.......2000-03-29

First let me qualify my review in saying that I have ony read two of Joyner's pieces, "Overcoming Witchcraft," and "Overcoming the Accuser." I did not think that "Overcoming the Accuser" was very good. The book did not seem to go in a logical order or really say very much at all. There were a few good points, however, which is why I gave it 2 stars and not just one. It's okay, but read his other stuff first!

5 out of 5 stars Whether or not you realize it, shame can shape your life!.......2000-03-08

This book was Divine Revelation as to how shame had a grip on my life. We all experience "moments of truth" in our lives. This book did that for me. I realized while it's good to be "driven", it is also important to recognize what's at the root of the drive. For me, having identified "shame triggers" throughout my life was the first step to discovering the Father's love and accepting myself as a child of the Living God. Today, I walk with a new "God confidence". Thank you Marie Powers for being sensitive the Holy Spirit and obedient to reveal the lies of the enemy.

      4 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2000-01-07

My wife read this book. She found it to be just what she was expecting. It gave her good insights for herself and for those to whom she ministers everyday.

Our shame, whether it is legitimate or not, gets in the way of our relationships, both with people and with God. Until we deal with the shame in our lives and with the source of that shame we will be unable to become fully intimate with anyone.

      2 out of 5 stars Misleading title.......1997-12-13

Prospective buyers should be aware that the book is a feel-good discussion with a heavily religious slant. Anyone expecting an ideology-free discussion of the relationship between shame and intimacy should be prepared to read that "God's remedy for legitimate shame is the Cross of Christ" (p.9).
